AROUND THE INDUSTRY

W

by Kiley McKinna

elcome to the Limousin365 annual Breeder Directory Edition! As you page through this issue, you’ll find many of the breed’s most relevant and progressive programs showcased in accompaniment with multiple feature stories and industry news. As I write this column, pondering which direction to head, a few phrases come to mind—generational success; it’s a people business; data really matters and opportunity abounds. Many examples of these ‘catch’ phrases can be found in this issue. That said, I wanted to reflect upon these phrases as they apply to the genuine character of not only the breed but, the people involved in the breed.

Generational Success

“The neat part about it is I was born and raised on the farm my parents have right now. They own it and will own it forever.” If you didn’t know better, you’d think this was a quote I pulled from the now famed “Yellowstone” series. However, this quote isn’t from John Dutton but, one I pulled from the Glendenning J Bar J Ranch feature story found on page 66 of this issue. That said, I was reminded again of one of the hallmarks of the agriculture business—witnessing the tradition of multi-generational families succeeding over an extended period of time. As it relates to our Limousin family, it’s staggering the scores of programs that fall into this category. In the seedstock business we often find ourselves talking about program stayability/longevity or the lack thereof. As we evaluate the landscape of our breed, we are truly blessed to have several programs that fall into the “multi-generation” category. From my perspective, that’s exciting because it suggests the backbone of the breed is strong and projects to remain so into the distant future. Again, we will be reminded of that generational vibrance (grand parents, parents and kids) July 3-8 at our National Junior Heifer Show in Grand Island, Nebraska, which will feature one of the largest Limousin showcases in recent memory boasting more than 450 entries.

the ideal “product” and at times forget the value in the cultivation of relationships. I would contend, product focus is necessary but, the effort put forth to cultivate both existing and new relationships adds more value to your program at day’s end than anything else you can possibly do. That said, I’d challenge you to take some time to make an extra herd visit, make that phone call when you’re not selling something, or take a minute to lean on the fence and visit with your fellow breeders. I think you’ll appreciate the rewards of those actions.

Data Really Matters

“Accurate collection of data is important to us to ensure we are providing our customers with a true representation of the genetic potential of the cattle.” Today, more than ever, the registered cattle business is in many instances, data driven. Almost all seedstock producers, and a growing number of commercial cattlemen, heavily weigh actual performance, ultrasound data, carcass results, etc. when making buying decisions. As such, it should come as no surprise that veteran seedstock producers, like NALF Ex-Officio, Curt Wieczorek, are implementing programs and practices to capture as much relevant data as possible that they can in turn relay to their potential customers. Beginning on page 34 of this issue you can gain insight into the Wieczorek operation and how their program has evolved to be more data driven since their introduction into the Limousin breed nearly 50 years ago.

Opportunity Abounds.

It’s a People Business

Lastly, I’d like to briefly touch on what has become somewhat of a hot button topic in our industry and that is the National Western Stock Show vs. the Cattlemen’s Congress. And while I said ‘versus’ on purpose, that is not my belief at all. It seems many producers, for some reason, have decided to pit one event against the other—to what benefit, I am not certain. Myself, as well as a litany of other seedstock professionals I have visited with, contend there is room in this industry for both. From what I can tell after checking both schedules, producers can attend both events whether you exhibit cattle or not. As I eluded to earlier in this column, the seedstock business is a people business, and there is no substitute for looking a person in the eye and extending a firm hand in greeting. It seems we all have jam-packed schedules 52 weeks a year, so it basically boils down to deciding when and where your time is best spent. In my humble opinion, the more time you can spend around individuals with like minds and similar goals can do nothing but have a positive affect on your future.

As with most things in life, people prefer to do business with people they enjoy doing business with! The feature story showcasing the ATAK Limousin family found on page 50 is a both a warming and stark reminder of this simple concept. All too often, as breeders, marketers and breed advocates we get caught up in trying to create

In closing, I sincerely hope you enjoy our Breeder Directory issue, it is of benefit to your respective program and a promotional piece the Limousin breed can be proud of. A big thank-you to all of the advertisers, readership and those that continue to support and offer feedback as it relates to your magazine, Limousin365. We are all in it together and Limousin proud.

“It always goes back to the people for us.”

On the Forefront of Improvement Providing the industry with sires that improve the end product has been the goal of our operation for many years. Herd bull decisions made today influence your program, either positively or negatively, for years to come. We have always invested heavily in the best bulls the breed has to offer, focusing on volume, growth, performance and value added carcass traits. By incorporating Wieczorek genetics into your herd, you are not just investing in a new sire, you are buying into our philosophy of striving to improve the sire side of the breeding equation.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

H

by Dan Hunt

ello everyone, and thank you for thumbing through L365’s Breeder Directory Edition! Growing up in this breed, the Breeder Directory Edition has always been one of my favorites. It gives the reader a chance to learn about all the wonderful operations we have within our Limousin family. I hope that you’ve all had a successful spring calving season. It is always exciting to see the results of well-planned mating decisions! I am halfway through my fifth year serving the membership by being on the NALF Board of Directors, and I am continually reminded at how wonderful the people are in our breed. For example, last November when my parents, Charles and Nancy, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, the stack of cards and phone calls received from Limousin friends was truly mind blowing. They were extremely touched, thank you all. This past April in Lincoln, Nebraska, we held a successful board meeting. The COVID-19 regulations have lessened quite a bit here in Nebraska, so it was great to be able to sit in a meeting room and productively discuss our agenda face-to-face. The Board also had the opportunity to tour the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Hastings, Nebraska. They gave us a brief, but very interesting history of the facility, as well as showing us many statistics on how our breed ranks and the genetic progress we’ve made the last number of years. It’s nice to know the diligent work we all do as animal breeders is being recorded and visualized within the industry. A few things I’d like to bring to your attention: There is still time to run your females through the LimVision cowherd project. At a discounted rate of $24, LIMS members have the opportunity to genomically-enhance their entire cow herd. This not only results in increased accuracy of EPDs, but also runs parentage on each animal, allowing us to maintain the integrity of the NALF herdbook. To date, NALF has run 2,950 females on the cowherd reporting project. In addition to testing cows at the discounted rate, members that test 90% or more of their cowherd are eligible to test replacement heifers at the $24 rate for the foreseeable future. This project will wrap up at the end of this year. If you are interested in taking advantage of the program, contact Alison or Tammy in the NALF office. Donations are steadily flowing in to the North American Limousin Research Foundation (NALRF). Those of us who have fed Limousin and Lim-Flex-influenced feeder cattle know their profit potential, and now is our chance to prove it! By utilizing Foundation donations, a comprehensive feeding study is planned to capture feed performance and harvest data on three different contemporary groups. The Board

10

strongly believes in Limousin genetics and we are eager to document this study through South Dakota State University, then get the results out to the masses of feedyards and cow/calf producers. We expect positive results, which will create more pull-through demand for your genetics. The tentative schedule has been set for the Cattleman’s Congress, the first week of January 2022 in Oklahoma City. We expect record turnout for our shows, annual meeting, National Sale and Genetics on Ice event. We are also scheduled to conduct a Level II MOE show at the 2022 National Western Stock Show in Denver, as well as a pen bull show. The National Junior Show & Congress is quickly approaching and I hope to see many of you in Grand Island, Nebraska! A special thanks to Ann Vorthmann, Mallory Blunier and the NALJA Board for all the hours and effort put into planning this annual event. In closing, I pray you all have a safe and productive summer and that the good Lord blesses us with rain, healthy calves and green pastures!

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY by Mark Anderson Executive Director North American Limousin Foundation

W

elcome to the 2021 Breeder Directory Edition of Limousin365. Outstanding cattle can be acquired that are listed through various breeders within this issue that are the result of the dedication of Limousin breeders’ genetic programs and mating efforts through the previous years of hard work. Cattle that have superior quality and economic advantages to offer the commercial cattle industry throughout the United States can be located throughout this issue. Genetic progress through dedicated seedstock operations enables the Limousin breed the ability to offer commercial cattle producers cattle that can excel not only maternally, but cattle that are extremely valuable in a terminal crossbreeding program. Advantages in performance as it relates to weight traits and feed efficiency have never been more important in an environment that is battling high feed cost for both roughages and concentrates. It is estimated that 65% of the total cost of beef production comes in the form of feed cost. This is combined with cattle that can hit the mark in terms of carcass quality in terms of superior yield grade and retail yield, while offering improved marbling EPDs. Although commercial producers do not look to our breed to acquire marbling in a crossbreeding program, recent improvements by our breeders on the trait enable Limousin to be utilized in a terminal cross program with the unique benefit of utilizing cattle that lead the way across the industry in terms of ribeye size. These economically important traits can be compared against other breeds within the IGS National Cattle Evaluation. This is starting to be reflected by increased commercial demand, particularly this past spring through bull sale season. Limousin and Lim-Flex breeders posted one of the strongest bull sale seasons in recent years. Congratulations to Limousin breeders across the country for your efforts for not only high quality cattle offerings but your dedicated marketing efforts as well. I often hear debate on which traits are of most importance when trying to build marketable seedstock. The truth of the matter is really fairly simple, they all matter! Commercial cattlemen want cattle that hit all marks, rather than having to choose one traits over another given the high cost and risk inherent in beef production. The NALF board is embarking on dedicated research though the North American Limousin Research Foundation (NALRF) to verify and back the production claims by independent third party research to help market these advantages into the future. Inflation has dramatically taken a foothold in this country, but that pass down has not been reflected at the cow/calf and feedyard levels of the business. Beef producers are still relying on improved performance

12

of cattle to cut production cost in a thin margin business that has lost some leverage in bargaining position at the feedyard level. Hopefully that situation will improve down the road. It is extremely frustrating for beef producers to see record retail beef prices and little trickle down occurring to the price received for feeder cattle and fed cattle. Switching gears, NALF would like to thank breeders that have participated in the LimVision cowherd project offered through Neogen. It can be a rather unnerving process for a breeder to submit 90% of their cowherd for genomics and parentage verification, yet many progressive breeders have elected to move forward with the project. Yes, some parentage errors have been found which exist in every herdbook, but most have taken the approach that they would rather know if any errors exist and get them corrected moving forward. Of course, the biggest advantage of participating in LimVision is getting genomics done on your cow factory at a reduced rate along with advantages obtained in EPD accuracy for future matings and genetic improvement. The advantage of getting 90% of the cow herd done also helps train genomic panels by not only capturing high quality cattle but the lower quality individuals as well. This, combined with turning in accurate phenotype data for both weight traits and carcass data (both ultrasound and actual harvest data), has developed the most accurate and usable herdbook in Limousin history. We look forward to the upcoming Limousin Junior Nationals in Grand Island this Summer. NALJA has received record entries for the event topping 450 head entered into the week long event. Thank you to Ann Vorthmann for all her hard work and effort in helping to prepare a first class event this year. Additional thanks to the NALJA board along with Mallory and Dominique for their hard work and effort. NALF and NALJA would also like to thank the generous support of breeders and contributors to the annual event. This event would not be possible without support from breeders and sponsors that give so generously throughout the year. NALF would also like to thank Ken Holloway and his family for the new scholarship program developed by his crew with the close of the All-American Limousin Futurity after it’s long and storied history. Due to his foresight, $16,000 worth of funds will be set aside annually for scholarships to be won at each year’s Limousin Junior Nationals. This will directly benefit junior Limousin breeders and help fund education cost for years to come as they move forward to pursue their chosen career paths and become industry leaders and potentially future Limousin breeders! We look forward to seeing many of you in Grand Island this summer and look forward to seeing you succeed with your breeding programs this year!

We have the strongest herd bull battery we have ever had in our 37 years in the business. That being said, we are always looking to improve and add elite individuals to stay on the leading edge of breed progress. This spring we added two new bulls to our program that represent the forefront of the Limousin breed.

Riding Shotgun Continuing Education As we travel the highways and by-ways of the Limousin family and breed we often cuss and discuss the cattle business, sports, politics, great cheeseburgers and most of the time, the promotion and marketing of Limousin cattle. Through “Riding Shotgun” we invite you to join us in the righthand seat, so that we can let you in on what we find to be our marketing pet peeves, shortcuts and some of the favorite habits of top-flight professional producers. Grab a cup of coffee and take the ‘shotgun seat’—we are pleased to have you riding along.

the insurance business; doctors, lawyers and a multitude of others are required to show they are ‘continuing their education’ to maintain their licenses and practice their professions. Some of the courses are great and well worth your time, some of the others are just time fillers (or killers) that fulfill your requirement list. It was in one of those classes that my mind wandered (do not tell my instructor) and I thought about continuing education as it relates to the farming and ranching business. It seems to me, as stewards of the land, we are constantly in continuing education—new ideas about the business, new technologies and new efficiencies are introduced to us every day. The difference is that we are not required to adopt, adapt or even be informed about these new ways of doing business to continue, but to be successful, we must make an effort to learn. One of the best things about agricultural people is they are willing to share and are open to helping others. If you see someone is doing something you wish to learn, you might find out they are more than open to sharing their ideas and knowledge. The problem is that most of us just want to have things done for us—we get intellectually lazy. “That’s the way we have always done it” is one of my biggest pet peeves, (next to NO farm sign). The way we have always done it is a good fall back, but that does not mean adopting a new way is wrong. Progress comes in many forms, don’t be afraid to move forward. I too enjoy some of the traditions and nostalgia of the seedstock business. I grew up in the days where we turned out the new herd bulls and eagerly awaited the new calves from a set of half sisters that would raise the bulls for sale and the females to re-populate the herd. It worked fine and we made genetic progress, but it was and is slower. Then we started to AI, then transplant, now sexed semen, in-vitro and DNA rule the day. To participate in the seedstock business today, I think you must be open to change and open to at least having a little “continuing education”. You do not have to accept (or adopt) every idea, but you should at least ponder the subject. You are not required to do it, but it has the opportunity to make your business not only more profitable but also more enjoyable. As one of my favorite NCIS characters says, “Go out and learn things.” See ya down the road.

iven what this world has gone through the past year with Covid, I can’t help but think about what it brought to us and all that everyone had to deal with. I truly believe it made us realize we can’t take anything for granted. It seems as if nothing can ever just be perfect, there always needs to be a reset button to keep us all in check. Covid was sure the catalyst to make us stand up, take note and be accountable for our actions. So many people have their stories, people they may have lost, along with businesses affected; I just have a story of one year I will never get back in my life. My mother is in a nursing home in Kansas and is being cared for very well. We have a great relationship and talk often, but for one year during Covid we

were not able to see each other or experience our company together. With the disease Dementia rapidly taking over her mind, I quickly realized how fast things happen and how loss hits you right in the gut. I relate this to the connection many of us have in the Limousin breed and the relationships developed over the years and how we should not take any of them for granted. Like in my life, this Limousin business will always be a family business! No matter what life throws at us, we will always prevail together! I also believe the same is true in the seedstock business. We can never take our clients for granted and we also have to keep pushing and moving forward to properly service our loyal customers as well as capture the attention of new business. No matter whether you represent a family ranching legacy, a smaller “hobby” type operation or a show cattle family operation, we all have one common denominator and that is “family”. The bond and friendships made within our breed is both inspiring and intoxicating. Where the Limousin Breed is positioned in the industry is exciting for all of us in the business! The Limousin and Lim-Flex product is the most sought after and looked at in the entire industry. The structural soundness and integrity are like no other and that, combined with their performance and feed efficiency, makes the product the best fit for the cattle industry and is admired by astute cattleman around the globe. The dedication and commitment of the founding members to make the breed the best it can be is commendable. The current NALF staff, along with the devoted NALF Board of Directors, work endless hours to make sure the right steps are made for the most positive results for the perception of our breed. Sometimes it just feels good to tell it like it is! In this instance, it feels really good to boast a little about the Limousin Family and all that the Breed stands for. #LimousinProud

Bulls TO Improve Our goal is the same as yours, to find profit and success from our calf crop year after year. Every bull we produce is feed efficiency and performance tested. After 12 years of research trials compared to thousands of bulls of all breeds each year, we find many Leonard Limousin bulls in the low 4 lbs. feed/lb of gain compared to all other bulls average of 7 lbs. feed/lb of gain. In real terms that is over $1 per day per head in feed savings. This advantage will result in substantial savings in feed for an equal amount of gain, especially important with increasingly high prices in grain markets. Not only do our genetics carry increased feed efficiency, we also find elevated total lean meat yield and larger ribeye areas, as a result of many bulls carrying two copies of the F94L gene. Our determination to improve our feed efficiency and performance has kept us and our customers in business since 1969.

continued from page 37 Continual improvement on genetics and the potential of the breed is something Wieczorek Limousin continues to focus on, which is why they’ve partnered with SmartFeed and C-Lock Inc., to conduct a feed efficiency study on the ranch. “We recently started to evaluate individual feed intake on some AIsired steers on feed,” said Wieczorek. “The study will give us a general sense of how sires stack up in terms of feed efficiency. It will give us a conversion from feed to pounds of gain. I believe Limousin is at the front of the pack already based on other data from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, but this will allow us to take a look at the genetics and identify the most efficient bloodlines to promote and propagate. We plan to run our calves through the feed study this fall after weaning, and individual feed intake data will be available for our bulls in the 2022 sale offering.” Wieczorek Limousin will host its 42nd annual bull sale at the ranch in Mount Vernon on February 25, 2022. Make plans to attend, and learn more about the WZRK breeding program at wieczoreklimousin.com.

Curt Wieczorek says, “Accurate collection of data is important to us to ensure we are providing our customers with a true representation of what the cattle can do and to insure our EPD base reflects the genetic potential of the cattle.”

ED PINEGAR Inducted Into NALF Hall of Fame

E

d Pinegar of Pinegar Limousin, Springfield, Missouri, was inducted posthumously into the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) “Hall of Fame” March 20, 2021. The induction ceremony took place just prior to the Pinegar “Herdbuilder XXVII” sale at the sale facility on the farm. Mark Smith, C.K. “Sonny” Booth and Ken Holloway gave tributes in honor of Ed. Ken also read a poem he composed. Following the remarks, TJ Callahan, president of the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association, unveiled a portrait that will be hung in the NALF office as well as one given to the Pinegar family. Mark Anderson, NALF Executive Director, and Ty and Susie Heavin, ranch managers, were also on hand to honor the legacy of Ed. The objective of the NALF “Hall of Fame” is to honor those breeders who have made a significant impact on the improvement and furtherance of the Limousin breed of cattle in the United State. The inductees have given unselfishly of their time, counsel and wisdom; and provided leadership in advancing the objectives of the North American Limousin Foundation and its members. NALF’s core values include promoting the Limousin breed, integrity, treating members fairly and passion for the breed— this was Ed Pinegar. To say he had passion for promoting and marketing the Limousin breed would be an understatement. He was all in from the beginning. Ed becomes the eighth member of the “Hall of Fame”, joining Floyd McGowen of Texas, inducted in 1971; Dale Runnion of Colorado, 1993; Leonard Wulf of Minnesota, 2000; Ken Holloway

40

of Oklahoma, 2009; Herman Symens of South Dakota, 2015; C.K. “Sonny” Booth of Oklahoma, 2015; and Gene Raymond of Kansas, inducted in 2019. Pinegar started in the Limousin cattle business in 1992 on the farm he was raised on. Within a few short years, he became a leading breeder of Limousin cattle. His auctions would bring in breeders from all over the United State and Canada. Ed truly enjoyed helping fellow Limousin breeders grow and improve their herds. He always wanted to help ensure the best Limousin cattle were being produced and promoted. He supported the junior program, making sure juniors were given the best chance to succeed. When Pinegar Limousin went to its first show in Mississippi in the summer of 1994, Ed wanted to make a statement and knew that was possible with EXLR Luvly. This began Eds journey to breed top genetic cattle to grow and promote the breed, showing the value of Limousin cattle. It didn’t take long for Pinegar Limousin to bring one of its own cattle to the front of the ring at the All-American Futurity with AUTO Cliff Hanger, winning Grand Champion Bull honors in the summer of 1996. This was a great moment for Ed, his family and crew. This is just one of the many bulls and females with the AUTO prefix to win the title of Grand Champion at a major show. Ed was truly honored when the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association inducted him into the MLBA “Hall of Fame” in 2013. His family is truly honored on his behalf of his induction to the NALF “Hall of Fame.”

Rendering’s Role in the Rest of the Story Animal agriculture has a great sustainability story, yet that narrative is not complete without including how rendering extends, in multiple ways, livestock and poultry sustainability.

by Sharla Ishmael Clear Point Communications Editor’s Note: This article first appeared in Render magazine. To learn more about the rendering industry and its interdependence with the livestock business, visit www.rendermagazine.com.

R

eaders of a certain vintage will remember Paul Harvey’s famous tag line he used to sign off each episode of his radio show: “And now you know. . .the rest of the story.” That is exactly what the rendering industry does for the livestock and poultry business—it provides the rest of the sustainability story, which is the mantra for any business in today’s political and social climate. Consumers increasingly value products made in a sustainable manner, and they want to know the story behind that production. Animal agriculture is providing that information in all kinds of ways, from checkoff-funded promotional materials targeted to consumers, to YouTube videos highlighting conservation efforts by farmers and ranchers, to prioritizing sustainability in industry organizations’ longrange plans. New collaborative entities have sprouted up to bring together a diverse range of stakeholders interested in the sustainability of animal agriculture, such as the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Poultry and Eggs or the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. These groups include not only livestock producers, but also the World Wildlife Fund, McDonald’s, The Nature Conservancy, meatpackers, and citizen/society representatives. Virtually every conference held for beef, pork or poultry in

recent years had at least one session on sustainability. Livestock and poultry folks are working hard at getting their sustainability message out to the public. Yet there is more to that story, which is where rendering plays a key part.

Half of the Story

It is easy to find infographics referring to the by-products from livestock with titles like, “Everything but the Oink,” or “There’s a Cow in My Marshmallow,” which list typical by-products most consumers probably do not realize come from livestock. These by-products are available because the rendering industry transforms the roughly half of each meat animal that is not edible into usable products. Darling Ingredients Inc. has put together an informative green paper that explains it well. “In the United States, the human demand for consumable meat proteins generates approximately 56 billion pounds of unconsumed meat by-products and used cooking oil (UCO); these materials are processed and converted into usable proteins, minerals, fats and oils by the rendering industry. “We’re kind of joined at the hip because most all of our raw material supplies depend on the growth and health of the livestock industry,” said Dr. David Meeker, NARA’s senior vice president of scientific services. “Because so much of animal feed and pet food ingredients are made from these by-products, rendering helps make those industries more sustainable because they don’t have to use human food or virgin ingredients to produce their products.” Water Recovery Meeker also pointed to an obvious The rendering process also helps NARA data shows that rendering benefit that livestock producers think of capture and reuse water that might animal tissues is the greenhouse gas when envisioning what renderers do. otherwise have been wasted. PROFITABILITY TAKES BALANCE Profitability has many components: ease of calving, growth, quality and quantity of end product, maternal ability, as well as convenience traits like docility, soundness, udder and foot quality and the list goes on and on. It makes little sense to concentrate on one or two traits while ignoring other animal attributes. That is why we emphasize a balance of traits, both phenotypic and genetic. Every female is scrutinized for all things beef and every mating is carefully chosen to compliment strengths and improve weaknesses. That is why we utilize bulls like JBV Yellowstone and JBV Nite Watchman, sires that provide balanced EPD profiles, as well as offering functionality and eye appeal. Green Energy and New Applications

If anything screams sustainability, it is reducing the use of fossil fuels. One fast-growing market for green energy utilizes two upcycled byproducts—animal fats and used cooking oil from restaurants. Biodiesel and renewable diesel are two green energy products made possible by utilizing rendered products; an estimated 13 percent of these biofuels are produced with animal fats. These biofuels are recycled, renewable, and add to both industries’ sustainability credentials. There are many new applications for livestock and poultry byproducts being developed now that will add even more benefits to society. Dr. B.J. Bench, senior director of food safety and quality assurance at Tyson Foods Inc.’s Ingredient Solutions Group, points to the sustainability of using poultry products versus fish in aquafeed. “Various [fish] species harvested for fishmeal are not a sustainable source for aquaculture feeds,” he explained. “That is why aquaculture nutritionists are looking at replacing a certain percentage of diets utilizing fish meal with other rendered products. For example, chicken by-product meal has a very similar amino acid profile to fish meal, allowing it to be more readily used as an alternative feed ingredient.” Meeker said research funded by the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation is underway on how rendered proteins and fats can be used in soil remediation and the cleanup of Superfund sites. Other research focuses on lower-quality rendered material that could be used to make cement and building materials that are much more sustainable. “Actually, they perform better as well,” Meeker stated. “They’re tougher and stronger and more sustainable than cement. So, we can take these low-quality fatty acids and combine them with surplus sulfur creating a replacement for both cement and asphalt.” He added that, in the future, some of these products will likely be used to make roads, parking lots and buildings. “Those are some of the things that not only are we working on, but that we’re also trying to make sure policymakers are aware of so the rendering and animal agriculture industries can be viewed as part of the solution to climate change and overall sustainability,” Meeker said. As the livestock and poultry industries seek to tell their sustainability story to consumers and legislators alike, the benefits they reap from rendering—economically and environmentally—should be included. Otherwise, the rest of the story is missing. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sharla Ishmael is a veteran agricultural writer from Benbrook, Texas.

he Schmalshof family of Avon, Illinois, began their Limousin cattle operation known as ATAK Limousin in 1985. Andy and his wife, Tammy, had a vision early on that surrounded Limousin cattle and family. Today that vision has come full circle with their family’s dedicated involvement in the ATAK Limousin program. Their son, Adam, and his wife, Jonelle, have three children who are on track to be the future of ATAK Limousin along with Adam’s sister, Karen Reese and her two children. It all started with the purchase of a select few Limousin bulls to introduce leaner beef into their commercial herd of cattle. As time went on, they incorporated more Limousin influence throughout the years and ultimately tapped into higher quality Limousin and LimFlex seedstock over the past 15-20 years. Their first red Limousin bull was purchased from Yackley Limousin out of Onida, South Dakota. “That bull was as gentle as can be,”

Tammy remarked. “We’ve always made docility a high priority along with elite production characteristics.” In the early years they also purchased several heifers from Norman Bruce of Leveldale Farm and still have the influence of his genetics in their program today. “Norm is a super guy and has always been great to work with,” Andy expressed. ATAK Limousin has built upon cow families for decades. “When you look at our donor pen with a strong influence from MAGS Wassail, MAGS Manuela, AUTO Poppy and MAGS American Beauty, we’re right there at the top with some of the best individuals in the breed. Genetically, we always try to build off of cow families because that’s where we find the most success. Along with our powerful donors, we have put together a phenomenal bull battery. We have some tried and true proven donors that go back to AUTO Poppy and MAGS Eternal Flame that we’ve purchased over the past few years, but what I’m really excited about is our donor prospects this year that will take us even farther to being in the top tier. I’m excited for the next four to five years with not only our proven genetics that we have, but our newer genetics coming into play now,” Adam said. The focus has always been on producing quality cattle with style that are eye-appealing, but also phenotypically sound with a strong production-oriented focus. “The last 10 years we’ve upped our quality

ant to save money on registrations, transfers and genomic profile testing? Looking to spend less time on the computer and more time outside? Tired of handwritten forms and paperwork? Want more reliable EPDs? Then the LIMS program is for you. The Limousin Inventory Management System (LIMS) is an optional, web-based, whole herd reporting program for active members (Founder, Lifetime, Junior and Annual members) of the North American Limousin Foundation. The program was first launched in 2006 and was revamped in 2016 to create a more user friendly and automated enrollment process for its members. The current LIMS program is a cumulation of many years of trials, breeder feedback, and the addition of new tools available in the Digital Beef registry platform.

The LIMS program is mutually beneficial for both members and NALF. There are incentives to capture unbiased, complete performance and reproductive data for more accurate EPDs. Members benefit from a simplified and lower cost way of conducting business. One question we get asked a lot is “Isn’t my herd too small for LIMS?” The short answer: absolutely not. There is no herd too big or small for the LIMS program. Small to medium sized herds can see a cost benefit from moving to the LIMS program almost immediately. If you are curious to the exact dollar figure for your herd, reach out to the staff and we can break down the program for you in a way that makes sense and is not overwhelming. We can determine if the LIMS program is right for you.

Cost savings

Among the many benefits LIMS has to offer, what stands out most among members is the cost saving aspect of the program. LIMS members are required to enroll 100% of their females, at a rate of $32 per active cow each year. The $32 cost to enroll each cow each year includes the free registration and transfer (up to 30 months of age) for that year’s calf crop. With NALF’s current pricing structure, the least costly registration and transfer is $62 per animal. But with LIMS, it’s all covered in one fee of $32, which is at least a $30 savings for members. In addition to saving money on registrations and transfers, NALF has partnered with Neogen to offer the LimVision cow herd reporting project. In line with the program’s objective to use performance data to drive more reliable genetic predictions, NALF encourages LIMS members to be progressive in their use of the genomic profile DNA tests to further drive improved EPD accuracy. Under LimVision, LIMS members have the opportunity to test active females at a reduced rate of $24 per head. In order to receive the $24 rate, members must test at least 90% of the cow herd. Once 90% of the cow herd has been tested, replacement heifers can be tested on the 100K for the same price. If LimVision is your primary reason for joining LIMS, please do so as soon as possible, as the LimVision program will only be offered through 2021. In addition to female testing, LIMS members can take advantage of a 5% discount off the 100K genomic profile test.

Efficiency

Work smarter, not harder! Time is one thing we all wish we had more of, especially during calving and breeding season. Enrollment in the LIMS program breaks your herd out into spring and fall calving cows, with each set having their own data tab. This concentrates all calving records to one place in Digital Beef, allowing you to see exactly what calves have been registered to which cows, and who is missing data. Each cow enrolled in LIMS will need to have a calf recorded or a reason for no calf (example, calf died before weaning) for each calendar year, and each calf will need a weaning weight recorded or a reason for no weaning weight. The LIMS tab will help you identify these females or calves that are missing records. Complete performance and reproductive information that is required for inventory-based recording is submitted online. The more specific you are with recording this data, the easier and quicker your registrations will be later on. In addition, managing your herd through the many tools on the NALF-DigitalBeef platform will also be easier and more comprehensive. Digital Beef has the capacity to keep all these records for members, so that you can look back on historical calf crops, not having to worry about losing data.

More reliable EPDs

This total herd reporting program contributes more complete and comprehensive production information, helping to position breeders and the Limousin breed as a whole for future improvements. By

reporting all your animals, you allow your top animals to stand out. The combination of performance data, genomic testing, NALF’s partnership with International Genetic Solutions has allowed for the most up to date EPDs on animals. As an IGS partner, these EPDs are comparable across 12 other breeds. These tools have helped Limousin identify areas of improvement and become more competitive in the seedstock industry.

Be Certified

LIMS members have access to the LIMS certified seal. This seal signifies commitment to providing whole herd performance data. This means that 100 percent of the registered cows in your program are enrolled in LIMS and requires you to report complete and comprehensive data on all your cows and calves. This total herd reporting program signifies to other members and commercial producers that you are committed to providing more and better information on the genetic merit of your cattle. The certified LIMS seal appears on your member site and on the animal view screen of every animal in you herd. It is also available to all LIMS members and can be used to further promote their herd in sale catalogs, advertisements, etc. With the ever-changing cattle industry, NALF strives to maximize profit for its members. LIMS members have seen more precise EPDs and have saved time and money from being a member. You are encouraged to look into the program and see how it can benefit your cattle operation. continued on page 62

Glendenning J Bar J

S

Coming Full Circle by Megan Silveira

imply put, four generations of the Glendenning family have come to love the Limousin breed. From the first duo of Jack and Jane, to the current gang of boys under the age of three that wander the land in Lebanon, Missouri, four generations of the Glendenning family have called J Bar J Ranch home. “I was raised on a cow-calf operation,” said Jack Glendenning, Jack and Jane’s son and the second generation to run the operation. “The neat part about it is I was born and raised on the farm my parents have right now. They own it and will own it forever.” Since the beginning, cattle have been a part of the family on the ranch. While Herefords and black Angus were the first breeds to join the ranch, Glendenning said he became hooked on the Limousin breed in 1984, when he and his father purchased their first fullblood bull. “I never switched back,” Glendenning explains, describing how he slowly infused Limousin genetics by breeding up those 50% females before committing to a registered herd. Nowadays, with the help of his children and young grandchildren, Glendenning runs 120 registered and commercial cow-calf pairs, a combination of registered Limousin and red Angus. The ranch operates on a 60-day calving period in both the fall and spring with extensive embryo transfer (ET) and artificial insemination (AI) programs. When the ranch first shifted to the Limousin breed, Glendenning said the weaning weight of their herd almost doubled. “We liked the extra muscle involved when we put Limousin on English cattle,” he said. “The main reason we stuck with them all these years was performance.” As J Bar J Ranch became more engrossed in the breed, Glendenning said he had the unique opportunity of watching his children grow up as a part of the Limousin industry. Glendenning and his wife, Vicky’s, three children—Josh, Jace and Jayme—all expressed an eagerness to be involved in the breed. “I didn’t make them do any of it,” Glendenning said. “They love the cattle business.” From working on the operation as they grew up to showing livestock at county fairs, all three of the Glendenning siblings were involved in the ranch until they reached college. “The way my parents raised us really effected our whole lives,” Josh says. “We couldn’t be any more blessed to have the parents we do.” Josh reflects on childhood memories of attending cattle sales and hours spent feeding cows as a family. He said from the moment he was first allowed out in the pasture, he had no doubts about his passion for the cattle industry. continued on page 68 Top: While separate entities, often times the lines blur between Jack and Vicki’s “day job”—Sand Spring Resort— and their cattle operation. Not only is their beef served at their Gravel Bar restaurant, many Limousin meetings and sales have taken place on the Sand Spring property. Bottom: It takes between 15 and 20 head to supply the Gravel Bar with the Glendennings home-raised beef.

As a witness to an inborn love for the cattle industry from four consecutive generations, it is no surprise Jack found a desire to serve the Limousin breed on a larger level. Jack served on the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Board of Directors for two terms and has been serving on and off the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association board for several terms. Additionally, he has been involved in the Heart of Missouri Limousin Association for almost 30 years. “I thought it was just an exciting avenue and way for me to get to know more people, especially on a national level,” Jack said. While serving, he said he was given the unique opportunity to see “the guts” of the breed associations, while still working to give back to the breed he loves. In Josh’s opinion, there’s no better individual to be serving the breed than his father. continued on page 70

all it takes is an excited look from his grandchildren to remind him why this tradition stands the test of time for his family.

that managed to convince the duo to turn the place into a sports bar. Josh said the business pitch started as a simple name—Gravel Bar and Grill—for the gravel both used as interior elements of the building and an element found outdoors in the riverbanks. The real selling point? Josh said they had the idea of using beef from the ranch to create renowned burgers sourced at a local level for guests. “If we did that, we could serve the very best burger,” Jack reflects of the decision. The bar and grill developed into a place known for their unique hamburgers, and Jack proudly says many of the resorts’ guests are eager to try one of the Gravel’s specialty menu items. The restaurant embraces their ability to try new recipes, so flavors and tastes of all kinds are both utilized and welcomed. The best part of the recipes is they all center around beef from Jack’s family operation—a fact he said is a big selling point for consumers. Jack said the restaurant will go through roughly 15 to 20 head each year for the burgers alone. At the end of the day, Jack said the restaurant has served as an additional outlet for his true passion—the cattle business. While challenges come and go, Jack said he will never fail to call the livestock industry home. “I think it’s a tradition for me,” he explains. “It’s about wanting to make sure my grandsons know what it’s all about.” If there ever comes a time where Jack said he might be tempted to do something with a little less stress or a simpler time commitment,

Frustration With Cattle Markets Grow Both producer groups and Congress look for change. by Wes Ishmael

“C

attle producers are frustrated, and with good reason. In sale barns and state meetings across the country, we’re hearing the same story of sky-high input costs and intense market volatility. Across the industry, there’s a consensus that market dynamics which consistently squash producer profitability are not sustainable for live cattle or beef producers,” said Jerry Bohn, president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). “As members of Congress create policy that directly impacts business conditions for our producers, it is critical they consider the grassroots input and firsthand experiences of folks on the ground. Our letter provides that perspective and reinforces how urgently we need something to shift here to strengthen the security of the beef supply chain. NCBA has strong working relationships with members on both sides of the aisle, we have grassroots policy to back the actions we outlined today, and we hope the conversation in Washington around these critical policy areas will progress quickly.” The letter Bohn referred to was one NCBA sent in June—with the support of 37 affiliate state cattle organizations—urging the leadership of the U.S. Senate and House Agriculture Committees to address critical areas of concern in the cattle and beef industry.

In simple terms, the most visible producer frustration revolved around cattle prices remaining stagnant, while wholesale beef prices rose to historic levels, with no producer leverage to alter the outcome. Contained within the dilemma is everything from what some consider too little weekly, regional cash price discovery to beef packing capacity stretched to the limits for too long. Arguably, on one end of the spectrum of producer opinion are those who believe the problem has to do with collusion and market manipulation by the nation’s beef packers, four of which kill over 80% of the fed cattle in this country each year. On the other end are those who believe the situation is the result of fundamental economics and free markets finding their way, no matter the outcome. The broadest swath of producer opinion seems to lie in the middle. They believe in free markets and economic fundamentals. They understand too little packing capacity, relative to the number of market-ready cattle is key to market challenges that go back well before supply chain disruptions wrought by the pandemic. They also understand that in particular regions and in particular weeks, there is little to no competition for fed cattle, even if there was lots more

packing capacity. That’s because there’s basically one buyer in some areas, not necessarily because of some grand design, but just the way it has worked out over time.

Producers are THAT concerned

Producer frustration grew to the point that leaders of usually antagonistic organizations met in May and found some points of mutual consensus. The Livestock Marketing Association organized the unprecedented meeting, which also included representation from, in alphabetical order: American Farm Bureau Federation, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Farmers Union, R-CALF USA, and the United States Cattlemen’s Association (USCA). According to Brett Crosby of Custom Ag Solutions, a USCA board member attending the meeting, the group talked candidly about a wide range of market-based issues, including, packer concentration, price transparency and discovery, packer oversight and enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act, as well as packing capacity and captive supplies. The group reached consensus on the following points and agreed to take them to their respective organizations for consideration: • Expedite the renewal of USDA’s Livestock Mandatory Reporting (LMR), including making formula base prices subject to the same reporting requirements as negotiated cash prices, and create a contract library. • Demand the Department of Justice issue a public investigation status report and as warranted, conduct joint U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and USDA oversight of packer activity moving forward.

• Encourage investment in, and development of, new independent, local, and regional packers. None of those suggestions is new. However, the collective voice of cattle producers represented by the organizations at the meeting is brand new—one cattle producer voice saying the same thing. The letter Bohn referred to at the outset includes some of the same recommendations. Specifically, NCBA pushed Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Sen. John Boozman (R-AR), Rep. David Scott (D-GA-13), and Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA-15) to consider swift Congressional action to: • Expand beef processing capacity. • Broaden labor policies to strengthen the beef processing workforce. • Increase transparency in cattle markets by reauthorizing Livestock Mandatory Reporting. • Support industry efforts to reform “Product of the USA” generic labeling. • Ensure proper oversight of cattle market players by concluding the ongoing U.S. Department of Justice investigation into the meatpacking sector.

Legislative Interest Grows

continued from page 75 If enacted, the bill would direct the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to create a cattle formula contracts library, and increase the reporting window for “cattle committed” from seven to 14 days. These measures aim at increasing transparency in the industry and improve the opportunity for robust price discovery. Rep. Hartzler’s legislation also reiterates the need for expedited reauthorization of USDA’s LMR program. The bill would also require the USDA, in consultation with the Chief Economist, to establish mandated minimums for regional negotiated cash and negotiated grid live cattle trade. Minimums would be set within two years of passage of the bill, and would invite stakeholder input through a public comment period and the consideration of key, peer-reviewed research from land grant universities. The same week, Representative Mike Guest (R-MS) and Representative Darren Soto (D-FL) led a bipartisan group of 52

lawmakers in pushing the DOJ to complete its investigation into the meatpacking sector, and whether or not anticompetitive practices have contributed to a persistent imbalance in the cattle markets. “The growing momentum we’re seeing in the House and Senate behind addressing these critical concerns in the cattle markets is reflective of the urgency producers are feeling across the country,” said Ethan Lane, NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs. “Extreme market volatility, unpredictable input costs, a shifting regulatory landscape and natural crises like drought leave cattle farmers and ranchers with a growing list of threats to their continued financial viability. Something needs to give.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Wes Ishmael has been involved with livestock publications since 1983. Wes grew up in Colorado and has always been in and around the livestock business. He now lives in Benbrook, Texas.

Muddy To Clearing Most market analysts see cattle price relief on the horizon, but it seems akin to riding toward mountains in the distance, which appear closer than reality. “Packers appear unable to increase weekday slaughter levels to process the market-ready supply in a timely manner as the sector enters a period of typically higher fed cattle slaughter,” explained analysts with USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS), in May’s Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook. “This appears to be in part due to labor disruptions that packers have dealt with since the beginning of the pandemic, but also interruptions in slaughter due to extreme weather in February and scheduled plant maintenance events.” In other words, the industry continued to be saddled with too much fed cattle supply for available beef packing capacity, meaning all of the market leverage remained with beef packers. “Feedlots are constrained in their ability to market cattle in a timely manner. As producers face poor pasture conditions and rising feed costs, they will compete for space in feedlots in an environment with higher expected feed prices and little optimism for fed cattle prices,” ERS analysts explained. “With decreased forages available, feeder cattle may need to enter feedlots earlier, depressing feeder cattle prices and possibly having a seasonal low (price) mid-summer as opposed to early fall,” said Brenda Boetel, Extension livestock economist at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, in a May issue of In the Cattle Markets. “With continued labor shortages and high levels of cattle on feed, there is limited bullish news for fat cattle prices. Corn prices will remain volatile and will move with any weather news.” Of course, the same drought conditions appeared to be accelerating the nascent cyclical herd liquidation indicated at the beginning of the year. Through the first week of June, analysts with the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) estimated total federally

76

inspected U.S. beef cow slaughter 10.1% higher than the same time a year earlier. They noted that below-average slaughter levels last year amplified the percentage change. Eventually, declining cattle numbers will translate into stronger cattle prices, likely as soon as the end of the third quarter of this year. Cattle futures prices suggest as much. “LMIC projected break-evens (feedlot) currently list October at about $115/cwt., nearly $10 under the current October Live Cattle Contract. More distant deferred Live Cattle contracts are even higher, which should bode well for cattle feeding returns into the first half of 2022,” said LMIC analysts, in that organization’s May Livestock Monitor. Up to that time, LMIC estimated cattle feeding returns at -$60 to +$40 per head for the year, due in part to escalating feed costs on the negative side of the ledger, but supported by declining feeder cattle prices from August of last year through January this year. In the June World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimate, ERS forecast the five-area direct fed steer price at $117/cwt. for this year. Projected average prices were $120 in the second quarter, $115 in the third quarter and $120 in the fourth quarter. “Calmer times may be coming but we are not quite there yet,” explained Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in early-June market comments. “Feed prices are expected to remain elevated and feeder cattle markets will continue to adjust to both feed market and fed cattle market conditions. Drought impacts remain uncertain and the short-term and long-term impacts on cattle markets are unknown. If enough herd liquidation is forced by the drought, short-term cattle slaughter and beef production will be higher than expected and beef production prospects beyond 2021 will be reduced.”

Changes included: 1) Setting the genetic correlation between weaning weight maternal (milk) and weaning weight direct to 0 2) Removing genomic marker effects for Milk 3) Selecting a new DNA Marker Subset 4) Including different variances for males vs. females 5) Accounting for different collection methods for birth weight

The most expansive change was made in August, the much awaited update to evaluation for growth traits, was finally released to the world. This was a much-needed, major overhaul that was referred to

November 2020

An important regular piece of housekeeping was completed in November in the form of updating the USMARC breed differences for carcass traits. Think of this as a regular tune-up, much like changing the oil in your car, it is important to do so periodically. Due to lack of actual carcass data being submitted, the IGS genetic evaluation uses US-MARC breed effects instead of effects from data in the evaluation. This is common with traits that have limited records, as it is impossible to find enough contemporary groups with breed comparisons to make evaluation of breed effects possible from data submitted by breeders. In situations like this, it is best to use estimates from scientific literature. These literature estimates are typically from studies that had breeding systems specifically designed for the purpose of obtaining breed effects and are much more reliable than what could be obtained from field data. In general, we see increases in carcass weight, marbling and fat for both Limousin and Lim-Flex, and a slight decrease in REA.

Earlier this spring, an update was made to the Stayability evaluation. A problem with the STAY evaluation had been incomplete calf-crop reporting. Previously, when a female added a progeny record, her entire contemporary group received an observation for that year, which caused frequent swings in EPD values as reporting continued for other females in the group. In February, censoring began on Stayability CG to temporarily remove contemporary groups that appear to be incompletely reported. This censoring will help more correctly report Stayability EPD and stabilize against wild swings until the entire contemporary group has been reported.

F

oot rot is an infectious disease of cattle, causing swelling and lameness in at least one foot. The associated lameness often leads to decreased appetite and overall performance. It is not uncommon for multiple animals in a herd to be affected. Foot rot can occur in cattle of all ages, and cases are often seen in wet and humid conditions, but can also occur when it is hot and dry when cattle congregate together. Standing in pens or lots heavily contaminated with feces and urine softens the skin and provides high exposure to the causative bacteria. High temperatures and humidity will also cause the skin to chap and crack, leaving it susceptible to bacterial invasion. Fusobacterium necrophorum is the bacterium most often isolated from infected feet. This organism is present on healthy skin, but it needs injury or wet skin to enter the deeper tissue. F. necrophorum appears to act cooperatively with other bacteria to cause disease. Moisture, nutrient deficiency, injury or disease can result in compromised skin or hoof wall integrity, increasing the likelihood of the bacteria invading the skin. Diagnosis of foot rot is typically made following thorough cleaning and examination of the foot particularly the space between the digits

following sudden lameness. Fever may also be noted. If treatment is delayed, deeper structures of the foot may become affected, leading to a chronic condition and decreased chance of recovery. Once foot rot has been confirmed, treatment should be administered. Antibiotics and pain medications along with addressing housing and environmental conditions should be considered. A vaccine does exist, but producers should consult with their veterinarian to see if it is a good option. As with most infectious diseases, affected cattle should be isolated. Notable improvement should be seen within three to four days following treatment. If the animal is not responding during this period of time, it should be evaluated by a veterinarian. “Super foot rot” has been seen in certain areas of the country. It is more aggressive and is not as responsive to standard treatment. Additionally, there are multiple other conditions that cause cattle lameness. Producers should consult with their veterinarian on diagnostic and treatment options particularly for lameness that does not resolve in the time expected. Approximately 20 percent of all diagnosed lameness in cattle is actually foot rot.

BUILD WITH THE BEST

Constantly building and improving, we hit the trail this spring in search of our next great herd sire, putting an extreme emphasis on strong marbling, while not sacrificing power, eye appeal, and balanced EPDs. WZRK Herd Builder checks all those boxes and then some! Red and homozygous polled, he is heavy muscled, wide topped, docile and structurally correct. Even better, he carries a balanced EPD profile with four key traits in the top 5% and marbling in the top 10%. ello again everybody! This has been an exciting, yet stressful time of year for me. While I tried to finish the school year out strong, a large majority of my time seems to be spent thinking about how a certain cow’s calf will look if bred to a particular sire and help plan the National Junior Limousin Show & Congress. Many of you have spent the past few weeks focusing on show season and each of you will no doubt bring the heat in terms of quality cattle. Events would be postponed or spread apart, and many were not available to attend in-person, so we all stayed home. But lately, life has been speeding back up. While I am so thankful for things opening back up, I feel like I spend half of my days needing to relearn how to use a

calendar, and the other half trying to figure out how I am going to fit into the “going out” clothes that I stopped wearing over a year ago! As time keeps passing by, I hear folks daily say, “Gosh! I can’t wait for life to just get back to normal already!” At the beginning parts of the pandemic I totally agreed, but as I have had some time to reflect and think back to pre-COVID-19, I really begin to wonder. Was life as we know it ever actually normal? I mean, think about it. Yesterday, the weaned calves found the hole in the fence, today a water line busted, and the feed truck had a flat, and tomorrow who knows what could happen on the farm or ranch! To me, asking for normality is almost like asking for an easy way out. Instead, I believe we should all persevere and work towards a better tomorrow, rather than long for an easier day that we may have had in the past. If we don’t focus on the

road ahead, we may get caught looking in the rear-view mirror and miss the S-curve that is right in front of us! An all-time favorite quote of mine is, “You are the average of the five people you surround yourself with.” I think this is so relevant to the world we live in today. You can choose to surround yourself with positive or negative, hard-working, or lazy, and faithful or unfaithful people. Just know that in the end, you will become what you surround yourself with! SO, be wise my friends. Proverbs 13:20 – Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of a fool will suffer harm.

A New Era At Buck Ridge HBRL prefix progresses into BRCC prefix. Buck Ridge Cattle Company has changed our herd prefix from HBRL to BRCC in order to reflect the addition of Angus to our strong Limousin and Lim-Flex foundation. We have made this enhancement to better serve our customers as we move into the future. Today our cow herd consists of 250 mature females with plans to double that over the next few years. Our cow herd is always on rotationally-grazed pasture and we develop our heifers and bulls similarly with grain supplement to promote health and longevity. Buck Ridge continues to AI or ET almost every female and clean up with high-caliber herd sires. Our excitement is at an all-time high to be in the seedstock business and we are committed to producing the best product we can. Call, text, or stop by anytime to learn more about our program.
