It was amazing to see how the designers work with the areas. Working as a designer is attractive to me, and it can provide me with the opportunity to express myself. Thus, I decided to take the design course and plan to be a designer after I graduate.

I am a person who is keen to explore new things. As a person with a passion for design and marketing, I am interested in fashion, retail branding, interior design, and architecture. At the same time, I also keep learning to keep up with design trends.

01. SENIOR LIVING

Aspen Senior Living Concept

The Aspen tree is characterized by its long-stalked and coarsely-toothed leaves. As the name of the retirement home suggests, the Aspen tree indicates a spirit of connection and care. Although aspen trees appear to be separate individuals, the roots of trees are interlaced and connected as a whole. Strong trees share nutrients and moisture with small trees to help them thrive.

The dominant idea is to connect with nature to provide healthy environments. The entire space incorporates elements of aspen and nature, such as roots, soil, leaves, etc., through sustainable materials to reflect each element. Open spaces help promote air circulation and maximize natural light. To emphasize unity, simple linear lines will run through space. Space creates a harmonious and comfortable environment by applying symmetry and repetition of material, and textured patterns will be applied, providing customers with a feeling of security and comfort.

02. OFFICE DESIGN

CanWest Research Problem Statement& Concept

The market research firm, which is currently based in Vancouver, needs more space to accommodate its growing number of clients. The company was established in 2005 by Jane Weston. The client’s goal is to find an office space that is conducive to its core values of innovation, creativity, and collaboration.

Canwest is proud to be based within Metro Vancouver and is planning on relocating to the Guinness Tower, which is a prominent building in downtown Vancouver. The new location will allow the company’s employees to return to fulltime work.

As a busy company, innovation, creativity, and collaboration are the core values. Therefore, the design combines contemporary and minimalist styles to increase communication and encourage employee teamwork.

To create a place suitable for employees to work and rest, cushions, plants, and warm colours will be used to enhance the well-being of the occupants.

03. LIBRARY DESIGN

Bee Hive

Children’s Concept Statement

The design is inspired by a bee hive, which is regarded as the home of bees and allows them to live and work together.

The library is a place for children to learn knowledge and do activities together, and it provides support to children, just like a bee hive. As a children’s library located in Vancouver, the bee hive brings diverse people together and reflects a sense of connection.

To bring the concept into the design, the library will use lots of natural materials and orange and yellow colours to create a unique, comfortable, and welcoming space for children to learn and entertain. The library will reflect the bee hive’s key elements by using variation and repetition of hexagon patterns and solid colours to create a space suitable for children. Different scales of furniture can create visual interest and make the space unique.

04. RAINFOREST DAYCARE

Rainforest Daycare Concept

The concept for the daycare will be ‘the rainforest.’ As rainforests are unique in the high levels of biodiversity they exhibit, it reflect the different characteristics of our little habitants. The rainforest has a unique ecosystem that supports the plants and animals to live. To bring the concept into the design, the kindergarten will be a supportive space for children with disabilities, the design will be accessible for all children. A multi-layered approach will be used to reflect the biodiversity of the rainforest, such as using different heights and lighting.

The daycare will reflect key elements of rainforests: such as trees, plants, camping tents, animals and explorers (a.k.a. the children). As it rains a lot in Vancouver, the children will be playing inside most of the time, but through windows, they will be able to see the rainfall. Using a ‘rainforest’ theme connects the beauty of the outdoors to the indoors while also allowing children to experience immersive aspects of a rainforest without getting wet. Through the ‘rainforest’ concept, the children will act as little explorers—learning and taking on many adventures.

05. SILKY SIPS WINE STORE

Silky Sips Wine Store

Concept

Silky Sips specializes in red wine, providing selected products for mid to highend customers. Besides selling red wine, this store sells bottle openers, bottle stoppers, glassware, wine books and cheese. The wine store is guided by a set of core values that shapes all aspects of the business. These values are quality, simplicity, and innovation.

The design concepts are minimalist, bright and artistic. The inspiration is taken from the arched door. Compared with linear lines, curvilinear lines have beautiful arcs, bringing a unique and comfortable feeling. The curvilinear lines also emphasize the Silky Sips’ core values.

The storefront uses arched doors and windows to emphasize the overall artistry through repetition. Similarly, the interior uses arches and curves to make the entire space look harmonious. Curves will apply to the fixtures. In addition to neutral colours, space will also use red and geometric shapes such as circles and rectangles to create visual interest. Different materials will be used. Large beige porcelain tiles will run through the entire interior space. Marble will be used as tabletops and countertops.
