imelight is back and better than ever! In this issue, we have a little bit of everything to satisfy both existing and new readers. On page 6, be inspired by our four amazing ‘faces going places’, who include Lauren Marbe, a 16-year-old whose IQ is so high, she’s smarter than Einstein! We are happy to present a new regular careers page we hope you’ll enjoy called Talking Shop. It focuses on a young person with a great career and kicks off with professional football coach Philip Phillipou, on page 13. As usual, we have lined up an assortment of celeb interviews, starting on pages 8 and 9, with not one Hollywood star, but two! Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone are no amateurs to acting and both star in the same animated movie, The Croods. If you flip to pages 14 and 15 you’ll see our interview with American pop punk quartet We The Kings and on pages 22 and 23 you can check out our chat with boy band District 3, finalists in The X Factor, last year. Limelight has been a great issue to produce, as usual and I’m sure the rest of the magazine team will agree. Lauren Marbe may seem like your average 16-year-old, but she’s blessed with a brain capable of scoring 161 in a Mensa IQ Test. Mean anything to you? Well, this result means she’s smarter than Professor Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and even Albert Einstein. And where does this great mind hail from? Well… Essex of course! Move over Einstein, Lauren’s Sitting the IQ test with her friends at school, smarter! recently, Lauren managed to outsmart some of the cleverest people to have ever lived and now finds herself in the top 1 percent of the brightest people in the world. When Limelight asked how she felt about her incredible accomplishment, she said: “I was overwhelmed, I couldn’t quite believe it.” When trying to imagine a genius, an older individual with thick glasses and messy hair normally springs to mind. Well, as you can see from the photo above, Lauren is nothing like that! The lovely looking GCSE pupil is just a normal teenager who enjoys dancing, loves Beyonce’s music and can’t live without her most prized possession. “It’s my phone! I’m on it all the time! ” Blowing the Essex-stereotype right out of the picture, Lauren has her eyes set on university and hopes to become an architect one day. Pioneering the way for young entrepreneurs Sir Richard Branson has selected student and business owner, Jacob Hill, as a Virgin Media Pioneer, so that he can inspire more young people to become entrepreneurs. With one in four young people unemployed, Richard Branson decided to launch Virgin Media Pioneers, a free, online community connecting young, entrepreneurial talent to a network of peer-to-peer support, with video blogs, an engaging TV series and expert professional mentoring and advice. Jacob, who is one of 12 Virgin Media Pioneers across the UK, said: “Being a regional ambassador for Virgin Media Pioneers allows me to run amazing networking events in Yorkshire, which in turn allows me to support other young entrepreneurs and local businesses. Jacob, 20, juggles his role as a pioneer with studying for a degree at the University of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire and running The Lazy Camper, an online venture which provides everything needed for the great outdoors. The innovative student realised that the UK’s booming festival scene offered scope for a one-stop service, which offers everything needed for camping, conveniently packed in one bag. Jacob launched The Lazy Camper in 2012, after raising cash from a raft of investors including fellow students. The teenage fashion designer set to soar! When 19-year-old Bukki Ojo was rejected by her first choice university she was not a happy bunny. But instead of spending weeks licking her wounds she decided to get busy and launch her own funky fashion label, featuring vintage demin and African prints. Her line is a fast seller on top online fashion retailer ASOS and even high street favourite Topshop stocks her unique creations. Bukki, who was born in Nigeria and raised in London, told Limelight that she has not achieved her incredible success alone. “This business was purely the power of God,” she said. “The whole idea and concept is a total miracle and I am so thankful!” Now Bukki’s set her sights on conquering the USA. Her three wise phrases for anyone who wants to emulate her success is: “Don’t doubt yourself, do your research and pray!”

Adventure Hollywood hottie Ryan Reynolds is best known for his work as a leading man in front of the camera. But now he’s playing a leading role in his first animated feature as the voice of progressive cave boy Guy in DreamWorks’ The Croods. Transitioning from action to animation couldn’t have been easy and so Limelight was eager to find out how the 36-year-old megastar got on Limelight: With a leading role in The Croods and in the upcoming Turbo, it suddenly looks like you’re the new voice of DreamWorks animation. How did that happen? Ryan: Jeffrey Katzenberg asked if I’d be interested in working on Turbo, and having had such a riot on The Croods I said of course, I would love that.

Limelight: How did the experience compare to the work you’re more used to? Ryan: In animation there’s so much experimentation, there’s no real feeling to how over the top you can go. [I was given] full licence to go as big as possible. For years I’ve been working in film and you can never really go quite that big, so it re-awakened that sense. I started out in improv comedy, where you can just go as big as you can possibly conceive of taking a character - you get to do that in animation. Limelight: How would you describe your character, Guy? Ryan: I would describe Guy as pretty lonely. He’s been on his own for so long that a lot of his social skills have atrophied to some degree. He needs the Croods in much the same way as the Croods need him; they each have something that they’re desperately missing in their lives. They create the family that Guy yearns for and he has a sense of belonging with them that he didn’t have before. Limelight: How did you settle on guy’s voice? Ryan: A lot of times with the DreamWorks’ films they don’t really want you to change your voice that much. For me, I just tried to get more of a youthful bounce in my voice and tried to remember what it felt like to be 18 or 19 and bring that to the character. Limelight: The Croods covers themes such as fear, risk and evolution, what do you think is its central message? Ryan: I think it’s about leaving our safety nets behind. Every time I’ve ever done that in my life it’s been incredibly rewarding, even if it didn’t seem so at first. Every risk I’ve ever taken, every failure I’ve ever experienced has been something that pushed me forward as a human being and made me stronger, better and wiser. Emma Stone .. Hollywood i s Star! Emma Stone launched her acting career less than ten years ago and since then she has picked up numerous awards, allowing her movie career to go from strength to strength! Having previously worked on TV shows and video games, the Hollywood star is no stranger to voice work and now she’s playing Eep in the new animated movie, The Croods. It’s a role which allows her to make the most of her distinctive husky voice! Limelight: This is your first big leading role in an animated feature. How was the experience? Emma: It was so great. There was a lipstick camera that would just be there pointing at you and you’d be just flat-out going for it. They animated the character to mimic what your face was doing, which was really interesting and by far the most fun voice work I’ve ever gotten to do. Limelight: Do you think the finished version of Eep looks like you at all? Emma: Yes - definitely! It was wild. Her colouring was very different when I first saw sketches of her before I was cast. Now she’s got red hair and green eyes, which is so funny. There are definitely plenty of facial expressions she has that I can relate to.

“In The Croods my natural man voice finally worked for me!” Limelight: How would you describe Eep, your character, in The Croods? Emma: I would describe her as pretty daring and a nomad at heart, so her being drawn to Guy makes a lot of sense. She doesn’t want to be stuck in a cave any more, which I’m sure a lot of teens can relate to. Not many teens want to be stuck in the confines of their house and their parents’ rules; they want to see what the world has to offer. Eep is definitely in that headspace. Limelight: Did you get a chance to actually work with Ryan Reynolds? Emma: I did. There was one day where we got to record together. It was the only time throughout the recording process - which was two and a half years overall - that I got to record with another actor in the room. Limelight: You have a very distinctive voice. Does that husky Emma Stone trademark remain in Eep? Emma: Oh yes. If anything I tried to make it a little bit huskier. My natural man voice finally worked for me! Limelight: The movie covers themes such as fear, risk and evolution. Is that a theme you can relate to? Emma: Absolutely. Everyone can relate to the changing dynamics of family. London fashion week!

W

hat do you do when you get invited to the most famous and biggest fashion event in London? Say yes, of course and then spend hours on end picking the right outfit for the occasion. While most of you may think I’m crazy, let me inform you that London Fashion week is full of wonderful and witty characters so if you do decide to wear the old T-shirt and jeans you’ll definitely be the one sticking out. On the day of this highly anticipated event I was given a ticket to see Carlotta Actis Barone at London Fashion Scout, an event created for both the emerging and established designers to show off their latest collections and display their magnificent talent. I was very excited and therefore arrived a whole hour early! I felt very privileged to be wandering around, absorbing the exhibitions on offer in the Freemason’s Hall, one of the finest Art Deco buildings in England. But it wasn’t long before I had to leave the hall and descend the lavish marble stairs to watch Carlotta’s fashion show. Like a gang of buffaloes, fashionistas from all directions began to stampede towards the auditorium where the much awaited show was about to begin. Settling down in my spot I knew that I was in for a memorable ride. As soon as the jazzy music commenced I felt like I was in a dream. Towering models glided elegantly down the perfectly whitened runway while advertising the stylish but slightly revealing range of Carlotta Actis Barone. Everyone sat eagle-eyed for eight minutes until the magnificent show came to a sad end. And was it worth it? Of course it was! The show left me feeling dazzled as I clapped for Carlotta who appeared with a massive smile on her face. It was amazing, spectacular and remarkable, and I just had to find out the secret behind Carlotta’s success.

Limelight: Your mother is a visual artist; did she inspire you to take up fashion designing? Carlotta: Yes, definitely. This collection is actually inspired by her work. I grew up in a very creative environment and my parents took me to art exhibitions from a very young age. This definitely helped me to find my own art. Limelight: Are there any designers that you look up to? Carlotta: Vivienne Westwood is definitely one of my favourite designers but I have others as well. I don’t have one particular style and I think that all fashion is beautiful when interpreted artistically. Limelight: I have watched many of your fashion shows and they are all very different from each other. Is it your intention to make each one different to the previous one? Carlotta: This is my sixth season and it is a learning process, but this season I have found my direction and I know where I want to go. Limelight: What advice would you give to young people who hope to make it big in the fashion industry? Carlotta: Good luck first of all! It is very hard work but the harder you work the better you can achieve but be prepared to work hard. Fashion is not an easy industry so you need passion and hard work. Limelight: What can we expect from you in the next 5 years? Carlotta: Hopefully to be massive! But actually I just want to grow my label, have a bigger team and to be distributed worldwide. Limelight: From what age did you realise that fashion designing was for you? Carlotta: I designed my very first fashion collection when I was six. It was a children’s collection but I soon dropped it and took it up again at 18. I have now been working and studying fashion for 9 years to date.

osmo Jarvis’ efforts in the world of film and music have made him an online phenomenon and now the talented 23-year-old musician from Devon is able to offer good advice on how to make it in the music industry Limelight: How does it feel headlining your own shows? Cosmo: Pretty good, as it means I can have a long set, which is really great. Limelight: Before this, you had supported many artists- who was your favourite to support? Cosmo: Mad Dog Mcrea - that was on their last UK tour; they’re really nice guys. Limelight: Who or what inspires your lyrics? Cosmo: Anything and everything. People, places, dreams, news… anything! Limelight: What message were you trying to get across when writing your current album, Think Bigger? Cosmo: Well, the new album wasn’t written chronologically, it wasn’t written to be an album at all –they’re all

songs from different times, with different intentions. It was just a case of getting all those songs and arranging them on one CD and so the message I was trying to give is different on every song. Limelight: Has your writing style changed since you first started your career? Cosmo: Yeah, I don’t know how, but it’s definitely changed- whether it’s progressed I’m not sure, but I’m a lot more careful with what I choose to write about now. I used to just record everything but now I spend a bit more time actually writing the song and eventually record it. Limelight: Who are you influenced by musically? Cosmo: Many different artists really - Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Bronx everyone! Limelight: Who would you like to collaborate with? Cosmo: Rihanna, because that’d probably help my career quite a lot! Limelight: What advice would you give to young aspiring musicians? Cosmo: I’d say the best thing to do is to write music, record it, spread it around and tour. Aiming to be on Radio1 is not a good idea because you could write the best song in the world, and still not get any acceptance by them – or by anybody!

By Terrelle Iziren Twenty-three year old Philip Phillipou is living the dream of many teenagers, which is to work for their favourite football club. In Philip’s case this is Crystal Palace FC. He coaches for Crystal Palace’s Community Sports Trust and scouts talented 5 to 12-yearolds for its youth academy. “It’s an incredible opportunity to work for the club and something I had always hoped for,” enthused Philip. “One of the best parts of my job is taking the match day mascots on the pitch prior to the game for the first team. This is not only a great experience for the kids, but also for me, because to go on the pitch at Selhurst Park is every Palace fan’s dream.” Philip became a Palace fan after his dad took him to his first ever football match at Selhurst Park, when he was 3. His dad then started playing football with him in the back garden of their home. “My dad taught me that football is a mental sport - that football starts in the mind and ends with the feet,” recalled Philip. There’s no doubt that the talented scout is in a great place on the work front, but you’d be wrong to think that the path he travelled to get to where he is now was a smooth and straight one, without any bumps along the way. As a young boy Philip wanted to become a footballer and during his teens, he went on to play for the likes of Coney Hall and Farley Rangers, as a midfielder. However, Philip’s footballing career was short-lived, as much to his disappointment he failed to get scouted. That setback clearly wasn’t enough to knock Philip off his stride. He went on to study sports coaching at Glamorgan University in South Wales and graduated with a very good degree (a 2.1). He described his time in South Wales as a “vast contrast”

from living in south London, but an experience he “thoroughly enjoyed”. After his three year spell in South Wales, Philip returned to south London and joined the Crystal Palace FC Foundation, where he began to develop his coaching skills. Trevor Meader, Places’ head of pre-academy recruitment, asked Philip if he’d be interested in scouting and from that moment, it looked as though Philip’s new found career was prepared for lift off. As part of his job with the Eagles, Philip analyses matches played by preteens aged 6 to 12. During this process he videos academy matches

on a Sunday and then analyses them on his Apple Mac, before giving useful tactical information to his manager. When Philip was asked what he looks for when scouting young future players, he said: “I look out for their technical skills, how coachable they are and their intelligence within the game.” It must be said that Philip worked with now Manchester United loanee Wilfried Zaha, a Palace youth academy graduate. “He used to attend the Club’s “Kickz” sessions, which is a social inclusion programme used for bringing young people together.” As you may have gathered Philip is a football man through and through! “Most of my interests do revolve around football, however I also enjoy sports in general and travelling,” said Philip, who spent two summers coaching football in the USA. Philip’s career has been a success so far, but he’s keen to become even more successful quickly. When asked where he sees himself in five years’ time, career wise, he said: “I hope to progress with Crystal Palace and keep bringing in new potential players. Hopefully, we will be in the Premiership by then too!” limelight 13

America’s reigning monarchy! Calling all would-be rock stars! When Kristela Phillipou interviewed Travis Clark, the lead vocalist of American pop punk quartet We The Kings, she got a pretty good idea of life on tour…keep reading to find out about their influences, how to make it in the music industry and er, crazy fan moments!

Limelight: Welcome to the UK! How are you finding it? Travis: It’s great! This is our last show in the UK before we head off to mainland Europe, so we’re going to try to make it the most exciting show! Limelight: Have you mastered the English accent, yet? Travis: I haven’t. Every time I try to do an English accent it turns Indian! But the rest of the band can do it really well. Limelight: Go on, give it a go! Travis: Mate, I love the Queen and I love tea! (Australian accent) Limelight: So what do you most like about touring? Travis: For us it’s like a vacation. We’re best friends and we get to go around looking at different places. We could be sitting at a desk job, but we’d much rather spend our time touring, especially overseas, as we get to see different [places] and hear all the different accents. Limelight: Tell us about a crazy fan moment! 14 limelight

Travis: We have almost too many to share! We’ve had to sign a lot of weird things. Personally, I’ve had to sign a retainer and a silicone breast implant – that felt unhealthy! But all fan moments are good ones; even if they’re crazy. Limelight: Which celebrity would turn you into a screaming fan? Travis: Actor Will Smith! I met him and he made me feel so small! But musician-wise, it would be Paul McCartney - I’d turn into a schoolgirl! Limelight: Who are your major influences in the music industry? Travis: The Beatles, Blink 182, Green Day and Jimmy Eat World are huge influences on our band. Coldplay, Jason Mraz and Foo Fighters are incredible songwriters and I try to take pieces of how they write songs and use them for We The Kings. Limelight: Many of your lyrics are based around love. Are they influenced by anyone in particular?

Travis: I dated a girl for a very long time, and so our first and second record (on the third album) are all about her. We broke up in the middle of finishing the second record and so our third album was about single Travis trying to find ‘the one’. Limelight: If you weren’t in We The Kings, what do you think you’d be doing? Travis: I would be racing motocross! I use to love riding dirt bikes as a kid, but I think I’m better at writing music. Limelight: What made you start your own clothing line, King Travis? Travis: I started making my own clothes and others wanted them so I thought ‘I might as well start my own

line’ and that was it! Limelight: Was there a point where, as a band, you realised you had made it? Travis: Yes, when we each got a key to our city, Bradenton, in Florida. The mayor of the city came to one of our shows and presented each of us with a key. We were so honoured! Limelight: Who would you like to collaborate with in the future? Travis: Foo Fighters would be nice! Also, Chris Martin and Jason Mraz. I love collaborating with people. Limelight: You collaborated with Demi Lovato on We’ll Be A Dream. Would you want to collaborate with her again? Travis: Yeah, I mean, she’s still a good

friend of mine, so it’d be nice. I’ve written songs for some of her albums, so hopefully she’ll use those. Limelight: If you had to cross over to a completely different genre, which would it be? Travis: Hip-Hop! I love rapping - there’s a surprise song on our new album! Limelight: Many of our readers are aspiring musicians and so what advice would you give to them? Travis: It’s tough, but you just have to write the right song; one song could change everything. So until you have that one song – keep writing! You don’t know when it’ll come, but when it does, it’ll feel special. limelight 15

Limelight: How does it feel now that you’re going to be headlining your own tour? Dan: It [feels] amazing. We did The X Factor tour, but obviously that wasn’t just our fans. It’s amazing that our own fans will get to see us live and hear our own music. Limelight: Which city are you most looking forward to performing at? Dan: I’m looking forward to all of them, but there are some places we’ve never performed at before like Bath and Oxford. Limelight: Will your friends and family be attending? Dan: Possibly! I might let them come to one show. But we’re going to try and keep it just for the fans - our family can hear us any time! Limelight: What are you most looking forward to? Dan: I’m most looking forward to the intimacy of the gigs. We’re performing at the O2 Academy (in Islington). 16 Limelight

It’s not a massive venue, so it will be close and personal. But, I’m also really looking forward to the tour bus, a lot of crazy stuff is going to be going on. Everyone on the bus has to expect a lot of pranks from us. Limelight: What can your fans expect from your debut album? Dan: The music on the album is a lot more mature than what we sang on The X Factor. There’s obviously still going to be some pop songs; everyone loves a good pop song! But, there will be a mixture of genres. Limelight: What sets you aside from other boy bands in today’s music industry? Dan: I’ve never really seen us as a ‘boy band’ even though we were part of the battle of the boy bands on The X Factor with Union J. I see us as more of a band, as we like to play our own instruments. Limelight: You’ve been together for a while, did you ever think that you’d become as popular as you are today?

Dan: I think there’s always time to grow; I don’t think we’re there yet. Obviously we’ve got amazing support behind us – we have amazing fans and a great team. We’re just going to continue growing as artists. Limelight: Did you form with the intention of becoming famous? Dan: Not at all! We like to write our own music and so for us it’s all about the music. Even if we don’t get massively successful at the end of the day we’re putting our music out there. Success is just a bonus. Limelight: Did you enjoy The X Factor experience? Greg: Yeah, we really enjoyed it, but obviously we had that worry every week doing the live shows. We had no idea if we were going to go or stay. The tour was a lot more relaxing and we played at huge venues at such an early stage in our career; we’re really grateful for that [opportunity].

Limelight: Who have you met that’s made you starstruck? Greg: Ne-Yo! We bumped into him on The X Factor- that was a very starstruck moment for me. Limelight: Lastly, do you have any advice for aspiring singers or bands who are thinking about applying for The X Factor? Greg: The main thing is to stay true to yourself. Even though we are grateful for The X Factor experience, we went down a path that we wouldn’t usually go down. But at the end of the day, it was a great opportunity.

Boyz II Men District 3 bumped into Ne-Yo on The X Factor

With series 10 of The X Factor fast approaching, Limelight decided to welcome the show back to our TV screens with a chat with series 9 contestants District 3. The boys talk to the magazine’s Danielle McGrath and Kristela Phillipou about their 3eek Out Tour and their journey to becoming who they are today!

Limelight: Do you still keep in touch with your mentor on The X Factor, Louis Walsh and the contestants? Greg: We don’t speak to Louis as much, but we still keep in contact with all of the contestants; we have our own WhatsApp group! Limelight: Will they be attending your tour? Greg: Yeah, hopefully; we’d love for them to come. Limelight: How did you deal with the pressure of The X Factor? Greg: It was tough, but because we’re such good friends we were always there for each other. If we weren’t a group it would have probably been harder to deal with. Limelight: As all of you attended Sylvia Young Theatre School, do you feel your past experience helped you deal with stress? Greg: Yeah, definitely, not just because of the school but because we moved away from home at such a young age. I moved out when I was 13! It was hard to get to grips with sorting things out for myself. Limelight: Who would you most like to collaborate with in the future? Greg: It would be amazing to sing with Boys II Men, Ed Sheeran and Travis Garland. Limelight: Have any of you had any crazy fan moments? Greg: Our fans are so loyal and we really appreciate that. We love every one of them.

ver 30 Croydon College students were presented with certificates after successfully taking part in WorldSkills UK competitions, just before and during National Apprenticeship Week (March 11-15 2013). The competitions attracted enthusiastic students from a range of courses including Beauty Therapy, Carpentry, Brickwork, Film & Media, Hairdressing, and Plumbing. The students competed in stimulating and challenging tasks. Beauty therapy students, for example, competed to complete luxury manicures to industry standards in 90 minutes, while those studying Film and Media created their own 60 second film interpretation of a Shakespeare play. Heather Armstrong, Director of Apprenticeships, Partnerships and Enterprise at the College said the

students were “fantastic” during the competitions. “WorldSkills is a great platform for our vocational students to showcase their trade skills [and] we have had amazing support from companies that have sponsored these awards. We hope to continue working with them to enhance employment opportunities for our students.” Successful first place students from the competitions will be put forward to the UK WorldSkills regional finals and hopefully progress to the national finals of WorldSkills UK – The Skills Show. This will mainly take place at the prestigious NEC Arena, in Birmingham, from November 15-17 2013. If students are successful at this stage, they will have the opportunity to represent the UK at an international level. Jaine Bolton, Director of the

National Apprenticeship Service, said: “WorldSkills UK competitions provide opportunities for the country’s most talented people to enhance their technical and employability skills. “For employers, the competitions not only help to drive up standards in Apprenticeships and vocational education, but also motivate employees to achieve success.” The competitions took place over a period of two weeks, the presentation evening was on Tuesday March 12 2013. The employers who sponsored the competitions’ awards and certificates, include: Building Engineering Services Training Ltd, Denbies Wine Estate, Fix Auto, Matrix, REDS10 and The Worshipful Company of Plumbers.

Sylvia Marshall, one of Britain’s most successful business women, believes entrepreneurial young people who can’t find work should consider setting up their own businesses. Here she tells Limelight about her journey from £0 to a £1m and offers some tips on how to become a business success! By Cynthia Mosengo and Roxana Hall

L

ike many young people, Sylvia Marshall was unclear about her career path after leaving school and so ended up working in a range of different jobs before finding her niche as a trainer, with an insurance company. However, despite her hard work, Sylvia was unfortunately made redundant and thought “I’m going to try it on my own (set up a business), until I find a proper job?”. But Sylvia never looked back, going on to transform her company, Able Training - which trained employees in the insurance industry - into an international success, with clients as far afield as Russia, Poland and the USA. Sylvia envisaged growing a business just in London and doesn’t believe going global should be an aspiration. “If you start a business and it goes no further than your local area, so what? If it’s earning you a living, that’s great,” she told the Limelight team. “The only things you should be concerned about is whether or not it is making a profit and

Are you a born entrepreneur? if you’re enjoying it, because if you’re not, you’re not going to make a profit.” Ten years after launching Able Training - which she eventually sold - Sylvia decided to buy the premises of a former high street bank and transform it into prestigious offices. The bank’s transformation was watched by thousands as Sylvia broadcast her exploits, at a time when video streaming was in its infancy. This ambitious under-taking was not without its challenges, as Sylvia ended up losing a lot of money, because, “the builders didn’t know what they were doing and I didn’t know what I was doing”. But then she began taking classes in bricklaying, plumbing and other core trade skills and this inspired the creation of another business, Cosy Homes Online in 2002. Sylvia was broke when she launched Able Training, her first business in 1992, so she really did go from £0 to a £1m. Now of course she’s smiling all the way to the bank!

If building a business were easy, then everyone would be doing it. There are some people though, who were born to do business - they have the entrepreneur gene. Are you one of them? Narrowly failed the test, but have a passion you’re eager to turn into a business? Then don’t rule out pursuing your passion. Passion can drive you to build a successful business, according to one expert on entrepreneurship. Now that you know where you stand, read Sylvia’s top tips for business success.

Sylvia’s tips for budding entrepreneurs • If you’ve got an idea for a service or product, find out if people want what you would like to offer, by doing your research • Write a business plan - if your product or service is in demand – it only needs to be a few pages long • Take risks, because without risk taking you may be stuck in the same place • Use social media, if you want to grow quickly. Urge everyone you know to ask five people to follow you • Learn something from everyone you meet. Often someone who has never done what you’re doing, can come up with a brilliant idea you can use • Don’t spend money you haven’t got and only buy the things you need • Make sure your business is making a profit and you’re enjoying running it, because if you’re not, you’re not going to make a profit • If you start a business and fail, you are still a success because the skills you’ll have learnt, will make you more employable limelight 21

Cosmo Jarvis: Think Bigger 4/5 If I received Cosmo Jarvis’s latest album Think Bigger for my birthday I would feel a little disappointed. My first question would be: “Who is he?” and “What does he have to offer?” There would be a few reasons for my pessimistic approach. Firstly, I was never a fan of his genre and secondly, my zero knowledge of the guy would mean that in my mind he wasn’t all that good. However, as soon as I put on my headphones I had to eat my words because despite being an R&B

devotee, Cosmo’s ear-friendly melodies and lyrically powerful tunes made me convert into an Indie Rock fanatic! Opening the album with the slightly jazzy, Love This, I literally fell in love with his style and rhythm. My favorite track was The Girl From My Village. With a catchy beat, emotionally touching lyrics and a true story behind it, the song was very memorable. I am not going to say that Think Bigger is the definition of perfect because some tracks are better than others. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend it because Cosmo’s sensational lyrics and fabulous style are one of a kind. By Barbara Bielecka

Gimme The Loot 3/5 Gimme a pillow and some chocolate more like! From this 81 minute movie expect nothing more than a relaxed storyline and hints of humour as you sit back and

unwind to the sight of two New Yorkers striving to become famous graffiti writers. They suffer a setback when a rival gang buffs their latest masterpiece and plan a burglary to raise the $500 they need to get revenge. This is not one of those films that leaves you in a state of shock or incredible fulfilment, but instead gives you a slight tingly sensation in your cheeks that results from having a quick occasional chuckle. If you’re planning on watching this film make sure you pick a day when you’re feeling down because this film is bound to put a smile back on your face. Gimme The Loot is out in cinemas now. The ‘Beliebers’ were treated to three support acts, Jaden Smith, Cody Simpson and Carly Rae Jepsen. Each act was extremely talented and the vibe of the last support act, Carly Rae Jepsen, built up the anticipation. The sold out crowd then started to chant Justin’s name as the countdown began. At the last ten seconds, the lights began to dim and overpowering screams managed to increase as Justin, attached to wings descended onto the stage. Justin then broke out into dance as he sang All Around The World, a single released from his third studio album. The talented star went from upbeat music and dance moves to

sitting at a piano for a relaxed and inspiring performance of Believe, a song he wrote for his fans, which was the highlight of the evening. Justin finished his set with an incredible performance of his well-known single Boyfriend, leaving his fans fulfilled.

When I heard that Valentino: The Master of Couture was holding an exhibition at Somerset House I literally fell of my chair and screamed: “I have to go there!” Next thing I knew I was on the train racing towards central London at the speed of light in order to get to this exciting event. Being a fashion fanatic I have always been in love with Valentino’s feminine designs and sophisticated garments. As soon as I entered the beautifully ornamented gallery I was submerged in elegance, intricacy and beauty. The stunning dresses tailored to perfection took my breath away and left me standing speechless. Even my fashion hating, sceptical cousin Roxana, (Limelight’s chief sub-editor) had to agree the designs were simply magnificent. With over 130 dresses worn by icons such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s not surprising the exhibition hall was bursting with fashionistas from all over the globe. After a day of experiencing this once in a lifetime opportunity, I felt truly inspired and overwhelmed by the immense talent that is Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani. Ashleigh: I just want to fastforward to next year!

The golf mad Essex girl offered A US university scholarship

By Terrelle Iziren hen Ashleigh Greenham started golf lessons at 9, she never imagined that within a few years she’d be playing golf for her club, county and country – but that’s exactly what happened. Even more unbelievable is the fact that now aged just 16 she has a six figure golfing scholarship to study at Arizona State University, in the USA. She had in total five offers from American universities including Mississippi State and the University of South Carolina – all offering full scholarships. Ashleigh, who lives in Chingford, Essex and studies A levels at Forest School in east London, opted for Arizona State as it ranks as one of the world’s top 80 universities. It is also seen as one of the best places for a young golfer to develop. Ashleigh’s scholarship means that her fees, books, board, food and golfing equipment will be paid for, while she is studying at the university. The talented teenager has already been in contact with her new university coach and will begin her four year degree in a science subject at the US university in September 2014. “After getting off the phone with my new coach who had just made me the offer, I was shaking and couldn’t sleep that night – such was my excitement,” enthused Ashleigh. “Arizona State University ticks every box: golfing, academic and of the course the weather. I just want to fast-forward to next year!”

Scottish Student Swoops for Legendary Golfing Status By Terrelle Iziren Golfer Kelsey McDonald has followed in the footsteps of leading Scottish golfer Catriona Matthews, by securing the Jones-Doherty Women’s Amateur Championship. The 22-year-old golfing sensation, a final year sports studies student at the University of Stirling, lived up to her billing as the No.1 seed, at the third event, on the Orange Blossom, the highly regarded Tour for amateur women. She triumphed over 13-yearold Mikal Liu 3 and 2, emulating the victory of Stirling graduate, Catriona, who clinched the amateur competition in 1992. Kelsey, who lost the final in 2009, said: “I’m really pleased to finish the tour with a win here and to have my name on the same trophy as Catriona is very exciting. I’m grateful that my university has offered me tremendous support throughout my studies.” Kelsey now hopes to complete her studies and turn professional this spring, competing on the Ladies European Tour Access Series.
