Dear Friends,

OUR LEGACY. YOUR IMPACT. A HEALTHIER FUTURE

As I reflect on the celebration of Lima Memorial’s 125th anniversary, we are reminded of the incredible legacy that continues to shape our future. Last year, we honored our humble beginnings from 1899 and the resilience that has propelled us through decades of challenges and growth. This enduring legacy has strengthened our resolve to provide the highest quality care to the patients and families who place their trust in us.

Through the years, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of philanthropy on our health system and the patients we are privileged to care for. From the establishment of our dedicated Observation Unit to the investment in our new echocardiogram machines, these advancements have been made possible by the generosity of our donor community. Together, we continue to turn our vision into reality, improving lives and expanding access to advanced health care close to home.

In this edition of FOCUS, we celebrate the remarkable stories of those who have been touched by Lima Memorial’s care and the donors whose commitment makes it all possible. A HEART WELL-CARED FOR

At 81, Jeanne refuses to slow down. Living independently in Jackson Center, she cherishes her time with family, including her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. “I go to all of the events I can possibly go to,” Jeanne shares. “I’ve got my calendar full.” While Jeanne loves life and thrives on being social, her health journey has not been without challenges.

Jeanne’s heart journey began in 2010 when a routine preventive scan revealed she needed follow-up care. Concerned about what this might mean, Jeanne turned to her children for advice. Having first-hand experience with Dr. Paul Anike and his team at the Lima Memorial Health System Heart & Vascular Institute, they assured her she would be in the best hands. That was all Jeanne needed to confidently schedule her first appointment—one that would mark the beginning of a trusted relationship in her cardiac care.

Under the watchful eye of Dr. Anike and his team, Jeanne remained closely monitored over the years. When Jeanne needed a little more intervention to keep living life at full speed, Dr. Anike and his team were right beside her, ready to help keep her moving. Jeanne underwent a LUX-Dx™ cardiac monitor procedure and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), followed a few years later by the WATCHMAN™ implant procedure—each a cutting-edge advancement designed to protect her heart and lifestyle.

JEANNE’S

STORY OF TRUST AND GRATITUDE

“I have complete faith in this team and full confidence in Lima Memorial,” Jeanne shares. “Their care has meant everything to me.”

Even after her procedures, Jeanne continues to receive dedicated follow-up care from the Lima Memorial heart team. To her, it is not just about check-ups; it is about the people. She has been amazed by how the Heart & Vascular Institute team genuinely cares about her life beyond her medical charts, always asking about her family and taking a real interest in what is going on at home. That compassion, combined with their expertise, is what sets Lima Memorial apart.

Through it all, Jeanne has never questioned where she wants to receive care. “Always take me to Lima Memorial. I feel safe there,” she says. “I will always thank God first. Beyond that, I am so very thankful for Lima Memorial. I recommend them to everyone!”

Thanks to the expert care she has received, Jeanne continues to embrace life fully—attending great-grandchildren’s events, family gatherings and all the moments that mean the most.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, a $750,000 investment in the Lima Memorial Foundation’s Area of Greatest Need allowed Lima Memorial to invest in six new echocardiography machines to enhance heart care for patients—ensuring life-saving technology is accessible and the Lima Memorial team can provide Great Care our community trusts.

Their vision ensures everyone in our region has access to the exceptional, high-quality health care they deserve. Among these dedicated individuals is Adam Rector, owner of Biggby Coffee and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt. Adam’s passion for service is deeply rooted in his personal values and family influences. Adam, along with his wife Mary and their three children, aims to live a life shaped by giving back.

Inspired by Mary’s father, Eric Wiechart, a longtime Foundation Board member and supporter, Adam was drawn to the Foundation’s mission.

“The Foundation’s investment in the hospital is vital, not just for advancing technology and equipment, but for improving the lives of people in our community,” Adam shares. “It’s about ensuring exceptional care is always available, right here at home.”

Since joining the Lima Memorial Foundation Board in 2017, Adam has been a dynamic advocate for the hospital’s mission. Adam's leadership and participation on the Board and various committees allows him to inform the community about healthcare innovations, serve as an ambassador for the health system and passionately support the fundraising efforts of the Foundation.

WHEN YOU DONATE TO THE FOUNDATION, YOU’RE DIRECTLY GIVING BACK TO THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY.

“What makes it so easy to support Lima Memorial is the care, compassion and dedication every team member brings to their work,” Adam explains. “When you donate to the Foundation, you’re directly giving back to the heart of the community.”

Adam sees his role on the Board as more than a responsibility. He considers it a privilege. His belief in the power of local philanthropy is matched by his gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this community,” he says. “Lima Memorial is a cornerstone of care for our region, and I’m proud to support its mission. I encourage anyone considering a gift or involvement with the Foundation to take the leap—it truly impacts lives.”

Each spring, the Lima Memorial Foundation proudly hosts Ovation, an event celebrating businesses and individuals who have achieved milestone levels of giving to the Foundation.

In 2024, the Foundation paid special tribute to Dr. C. Lynn Thompson for his unwavering dedication to Lima Memorial Health System and our community. Dr. Thompson served as Lima Memorial’s first Vice President of Medical Affairs and led the Allen County Public Health Board as President for an impressive 31 years. His legacy includes transitioning his private practice into the Medical Management Group of Ohio, the precursor to Lima Memorial Physicians (LMP). Today, LMP boasts more than 120 providers across more than 20 specialties, a testament to his vision and commitment to advancing health care in our region.

EARLY DETECTION, ENDLESS GRATITUDE

MAMMOGRAPHY ACCESS IN WAPAKONETA

For 12 years, Theresa King has called Ohio home, settling in St. Marys with her husband and close-knit family. Staying proactive about her health, she scheduled her annual mammograms without fail. For years, those appointments were routine—until 2024, when everything changed.

“They caught it really early—zero grade, just tiny specs on the mammogram,” Theresa recalled. “If I hadn’t gone every year, who knows where I’d be now.”

Her routine mammogram at Lima Memorial’s Wapakoneta Medical Center led to further testing, a biopsy and ultimately a breast cancer diagnosis. The news was daunting, but the compassionate care she received made all the difference.

"Dr. Weyer was amazing. When she walked in for my biopsy, she touched my arm and spoke in such a calm, soothing voice—my fear melted away,” Theresa shares. “Everyone I’ve met on this journey has been incredible."

Theresa chose Lima Memorial’s Wapakoneta location for its convenience, never realizing just how vital that decision would be. This life-saving access to care in this rural community was made possible by generous contributions to the Lima Memorial Foundation, and for that, Theresa is incredibly grateful.

“It’s great that more people have easy access to mammograms,” Theresa emphasizes. “People think cancer is more common now, but really, we’re just catching it earlier, and that’s saving lives.”

To those who help bring advanced healthcare services and technology to their communities, Theresa has one simple message: “Keep it going. You’re making a real difference.”

PEOPLE THINK CANCER IS MORE COMMON NOW, BUT REALLY, WE’RE JUST CATCHING IT EARLIER, AND THAT’S SAVING LIVES.

The Impact of Generosity on Jackie's Cancer Journey

Jackie Norris, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother has always held her family close, especially her granddaughters, often referring to them as “my heart.” In 2008, Jackie’s life changed unexpectedly when a routine mammogram revealed her first breast cancer diagnosis. After undergoing a mastectomy and reconstruction, the emotional and physical toll was significant. Supported by her loving family and friends, Jackie found the strength to move forward.

However, Jackie’s journey was far from over. In February 2024, Jackie discovered another lump—this time in her right breast. Motivated by her love for her grandchildren, she knew she had to act quickly. Living in Van Wert and working in Fort Wayne, Jackie had options for care—but without hesitation, she chose the Lima Memorial Women’s Health Center.

I AM SO THANKFUL TO EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTS THE HOPE FUND TO HELP PATIENTS LIKE ME. I HOPE TO ONE DAY BE ABLE TO GIVE BACK.
- JACKIE NORRIS

At Lima Memorial, Jackie found a compassionate team dedicated to her care. The team included skilled diagnostic radiologists and surgeons, medical oncologists and certified nurse practitioners who guided her through chemotherapy. She also received support and encouragement from the Lima Memorial Radiation Therapy team, as well as extraordinary guidance from patient navigators, “the cogs in the wheel” of her care team, as Jackie describes them.

“They made sure everyone had what they needed when they needed it—including me,” Jackie explains.

Frequent travel for work and treatments created financial strain for Jackie, but thanks to donor-generated Hope Fund dollars, Jackie received financial assistance that helped ease this burden.

“I am so thankful to everyone who supports the Hope Fund to help patients like me. I hope to one day be able to give back,” Jackie shares.

In sharing her story, Jackie is already giving back by raising awareness about the life-saving importance of mammograms and the transformative power of philanthropy. Her journey is a powerful reminder that, together, we can bring hope, healing and comfort to patients in our community.

As part of Lima Memorial’s 125-year anniversary celebrations, more than 100 participants—associates, family members and community members—came together for the inaugural Milestones in Motion 5K Run and Walk. This event promoted fun, fitness and community spirit while also supporting the Lima Memorial Foundation Samaritan Fund.

The Samaritan Fund plays a vital role in addressing critical gaps patients may face at the end of their hospital stay, such as access to essential medications, transportation and clothing—resources that help ensure patients can heal and thrive.

A Time to Remember HONORING

PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS AWARENESS MONTH

In October, during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, Lima Memorial Health System associates came together for the A Time to Remember campaign. This campaign helped raise awareness of pregnancy and infant loss while also supporting the Ryan & Robin Elephant Fund. Established through the Lima Memorial Foundation, this fund provides grieving families with a basket containing a plush baby elephant, a handmade blanket, a Recognition of Life certificate and resources on coping with loss. These gifts honor every life, no matter how short, ensuring they are remembered.

Additionally, the Loving Memory Memorial campaign brought associates and community members together to honor and remember little ones lost. Inspired by the fact that a group of elephants is called a “memory,” paper elephants were displayed for each memorial contribution, symbolizing collective strength and remembrance. Through activities like the Coins for Comfort coin drive and a raffle, the campaign raised more than $2,000, highlighting the generosity and compassion of those who participated.

Through the Ryan & Robin Elephant Fund, the Lima Memorial Foundation invites you to help honor little lives and provide comfort to grieving families. Your gift will make a meaningful difference for those facing unimaginable loss.

In recognition of Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month, Lacey Hefner, BSN, RN, Ambulatory Informatics Nurse, donated more than 60 safe sleep sacks to the Lima Memorial Family Birth Center. This cause is deeply personal for Lacey, whose daughter Rylee passed away from SIDS in 2016 at just three months old.

EVERY HEARTBEAT TELLS A STORY DR. VAHID TAVAKOLI

Lima Memorial is proud to have some of the region’s most trusted cardiologists, like Dr. Vahid Tavakoli, who has made it his mission to deliver exceptional cardiac care to our community. Known for his expertise in congestive heart failure, consultative cardiology and advanced cardiac imaging, Dr. Tavakoli approaches every patient with unwavering dedication and compassion.

“When someone trusts me with their heart health, I feel an immense responsibility to provide them with the very best care possible,” says Dr. Tavakoli.

In 2024, Dr. Tavakoli took a pivotal step in advancing cardiac care by championing the need for six state-of-the-art echocardiography machines, presenting this vision to the Foundation Board of Trustees. He emphasized that these machines, equipped with sharper, real-time imaging, are not just tools but lifelines, allowing clinicians to detect heart conditions earlier and craft personalized treatment plans.

“Every heartbeat tells a story,” Dr. Tavakoli says. “These machines allow us to hear that story more clearly, helping us deliver care that can save lives.”

The need for these advancements was evident. In 2024, Lima Memorial performed more than 7,000 echocardiograms—a sharp increase from the previous year. For patients, this technology means shorter wait times, greater comfort and world-class diagnostics close to home.

Beyond his clinical leadership, Dr. Tavakoli is a dedicated supporter of the Lima Memorial Foundation. He has personally invested in its mission, fully understanding how donor support drives life-changing advancements for the community.

“I see firsthand how contributions to the Foundation directly translate into better care for my patients. Supporting the Foundation is one of the most meaningful ways I can give back,” Dr. Tavakoli shares.

Thanks to Dr. Tavakoli’s advocacy and the generosity of our donors, Lima Memorial continues to elevate cardiac care, ensuring every heartbeat in our community is heard and cared for.

ANCHORED IN GENEROSITY

The Huckeriedes

Each year, a popular auction item at the Lima Memorial Foundation’s Journey gala is the "Day at Indian Lake Boat Ride," hosted by none other than Dave and Jan Huckeriede. For the lucky auction winners, it is more than just a boat ride—it is a chance to experience Indian Lake’s best spots with Dave at the helm, sharing stories and creating memories while enjoying Jan’s thoughtfully prepared dining experience.

While Dave and Jan love welcoming guests aboard for an unforgettable Indian Lake adventure, their generosity extends far beyond the water. As steadfast supporters of the Lima Memorial Foundation for 23 years, they have played a vital role in strengthening local health care.

Dave initially became involved with the Foundation through Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, where he and Jan have long prioritized community giving. Their support deepened through the years, leading Dave to serve on the Foundation Board in the past, a role that gave him insight into the many health system areas impacted by the Lima Memorial Foundation.

"Seeing firsthand the impact of Foundation projects, like patient room disinfecting robots and advanced health screenings, reinforced how vital Lima Memorial is to our community,” Dave shares.

The Huckeriedes’ connection to Lima Memorial is also personal. From Dave’s father’s care during challenging times to their own medical procedures, the couple has always experienced the exceptional care Lima Memorial provides close to home.

"The fact I didn’t have to travel to a big city for procedures speaks volumes. We have some of the best doctors and quality care right here,” Dave explains.

For the Huckeriedes, giving back is not just about financial contributions—it is about creating meaningful experiences, whether through their Indian Lake auction donation or their continued advocacy for Lima Memorial.

"Philanthropy isn’t always about cash donations. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in someone’s life,” they say.

The Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to Dave and Jan for their unwavering support and for inspiring future generations to embrace the power of giving. Thanks to their dedication, Lima Memorial continues to thrive—ensuring a healthier, stronger community for years to come.

THE FACT I DIDN’T HAVE TO TRAVEL TO A BIG CITY FOR PROCEDURES SPEAKS VOLUMES. WE HAVE SOME OF THE BEST DOCTORS AND QUALITY OF CARE RIGHT HERE.

PACKAGING WITH PURPOSE THE NELSON PACKAGING STORY

Every great business starts with a vision, and for Nelson Packaging, that vision was built on a foundation of quality and community. Founded in 1979 by Bryce Nelson with just 17 employees, the Lima-based company grew rapidly, with Sharon Faza joining in 1984. Initially in logistics, Sharon’s role quickly evolved into a leadership partnership with Bryce, shaping a company rooted in integrity and care.

After Bryce’s passing in 1996, Sharon took the helm as President and CEO, leading Nelson Packaging into its next chapter and transforming the small operation into a global powerhouse in contract manufacturing. Today, the company bottles soap and related products for leading brands worldwide, earning accolades like Supplier of the Year out of 88,000 contractors—a testament to its reputation for quality and reliability.

Sharon leads the family-run business alongside her brother Jim Loughrin, COO, and sister Mary Maidon, CFO. Together, they have cultivated a workplace where employees feel like family, with many staying for decades. “We’re like family here, and that connection is key to our success,” Sharon shares.

Beyond business, Nelson Packaging is committed to its community. For more than a decade, the company has contributed more than $25,000 to the Lima Memorial Foundation, supporting vital hospital initiatives.

“Health care is foundational,” Sharon explains. “Supporting Lima Memorial aligns with our commitment to quality care for our workforce and community. Bryce always said, ‘If it’s not quality, it’s not good enough,’ which mirrors Lima Memorial’s dedication to excellence.”

As Nelson Packaging looks to the future, the company’s unwavering focus on quality, community and family remains the cornerstone of their success and partnership with Lima Memorial Health System.

Lima Memorial aligns with our commitment to quality care – for our workforce and community.

FAITH, FAMILY AND PHILANTHROPY

Corey & Lauren Frazer’s Story

Corey and Lauren Frazer never imagined a single invitation to an event would ignite a passion for local health care. What began as an enjoyable evening at the Foundation’s 2018 Journey to the Red Carpet event quickly became an eye-opening experience, revealing the transformative impact of the Foundation on the community and sparking their commitment to local health care.

“A family friend invited us to Journey, and afterward, we had the opportunity to tour Lima Memorial’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Center,” Corey recalls. “Seeing the direct impact the Foundation has on patient care was inspiring. It was clear this wasn’t just about health care—it was about strengthening the well-being of an entire community.”

Since that moment, Corey and Lauren have remained dedicated supporters of the Foundation, becoming valued members of the 1899 Society, a group of committed annual donors. The Frazers actively seek ways to give back to the city that has embraced them, whether it is through support of the Foundation, their involvement with the Lima Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Lima Community Church or Lauren’s role on the Civic Center Board. As small business owners and parents of children born at Lima Memorial, they recognize the deep connection between a thriving health system and a thriving community.

“Accessible, high-quality health care is essential for families and businesses,” Corey shares. “As a State Farm Agency owner and with Lauren managing more than 40 vendors in the retail space, we see firsthand how important it is to have strong local resources. A healthier community leads to stronger businesses and a better quality of life for everyone.”

“There’s something incredibly reassuring about being cared for by professionals we know, respect and trust.” Lauren adds. “That kind of personal connection makes all the difference.”

The Lima Memorial Foundation is incredibly grateful for the generosity and support of the Frazers and committed 1899 Society members. Each donation is building a healthier future for our family, friends and neighbors.

“I’ve seen God’s presence and provision throughout my journey,” Lauren shares. “What we have is a gift meant to bless others. Giving back honors God and helps invest in the future of our family, the Foundation and the Lima community.”

EON

HELPS US DETECT LUNG CANCERS IN THEIR EARLY STAGES BY IDENTIFYING CRITICAL INDICATORS IN IMAGING REPORTS.

HARNESSING AI FOR EARLY CANCER DETECTION AT LIMA MEMORIAL

Lima Memorial is embracing cutting-edge AI technology to revolutionize lung cancer detection. Through a partnership with EON, a leading health technology company, Lima Memorial is transforming the way lung cancer is detected in our community, allowing teams to identify abnormalities earlier than ever before.

EON analyzes imaging reports, detecting key details that might otherwise be overlooked, including incidental lung nodules found during unrelated scans, such as Emergency Center visits. Leading this effort is Alexandrea Miller, RN, Clinical Research Nurse Navigator, who tracks patients at risk.

“EON helps us detect lung cancers in their early stages by identifying critical indicators in imaging reports,” Alexandrea explains. “Instead of findings being sent only to a provider, they’re also routed to me for review, ensuring no potential lung cancer goes unnoticed.”

The proactive approach is already making a difference. AI can flag even small nodules that might not meet standard size criteria but still pose a risk.

“There have been nodules under six millimeters that met other criteria and were later confirmed as cancerous,” Alexandrea shared. “Catching them early means we can start treatment faster and improve patient outcomes.”

Lima Memorial is proud to be the only facility in the region offering the advanced capabilities of EON technology to its patients. Integrated directly into the imaging process, EON technology enhances precision and efficiency without requiring any additional steps or ordering from patients. This cutting-edge technology ensures our patients receive the highest level of care, close to home.

Thanks to the unwavering generosity of our community, Lima Memorial took a major step forward in lung cancer detection in 2020 by investing in innovative diagnostic technology. This investment paved the way for our partnership with EON, allowing us to track incidental findings, such as lung nodules, and ensure patients receive the follow-up care they need. Because of this community-driven advancement, lives are being impacted in ways we never imagined, reinforcing the power of local support in transforming health care.

2024

Lima Memorial associates take tremendous pride in participating in Living the Spirit, an associate-driven fundraising campaign that provides support for one another and our community. While Living the Spirit helps Lima Memorial’s patients, programs and services, it also allows associates to lift each other up in times of need through the Associate Relief Fund.

With 100% leadership commitment and an outstanding 83% associate participation, more than $320,000 was pledged to advance local health care and support fellow associates in times of need. 134 ASSOCIATES SUPPORTED IN 2024

It is important to me to be supportive of my fellow teammates and our community. You never know when someone is going through a hard time and how much of a positive impact we can create for them in a time of need.

Participating in Living the Spirit is important because it is one of the multiple reasons we are much more than a hospital here at Lima Memorial. This is one of the many ways we take great care of our employees and community just as we do our patients.

A LIFETIME OF SERVICE

DAVID HARSH’S IMPACT AT LIMA MEMORIAL

A LOT OF OUR VOLUNTEERS HELPED MAKE THIS HISTORICAL DONATION POSSIBLE. IT’S NOT JUST ME, IT’S EVERYBODY.
- DAVID HARSH, VOLUNTEER

David Harsh has always had a servant’s heart, dedicating his life to helping others. From his early days as an Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced (EMTA) and volunteer firefighter to his leadership within the Lima Memorial Auxiliary, his commitment to service has left a lasting impact on the community.

David’s journey began after witnessing an accident near his home, igniting his passion for helping those in need. As an EMTA and volunteer firefighter, he developed a deep sense of responsibility—one that continued when he joined Lima Memorial as a volunteer. After the loss of his wife, he found purpose in giving back at the hospital, a decision that soon became a lifelong calling.

For 16 years, David has been an integral part of Lima Memorial, assisting patients, supporting the Pharmacy and Emergency Center and leading the Lima Memorial Auxiliary. As Auxiliary President in 2022, he led pivotal changes, including updating bylaws, strengthening fundraising efforts and fulfilling a $500,000 pledge for the new Welcome Center. In 2023, he proudly presented a $100,000 donation to support local students pursuing healthcare careers.

Beyond his leadership, David is always looking out for the hospital, continually seeking ways to improve processes and enhance the patient and family experience.

“I always ask questions about improvements,” David shares with a laugh. “I am always asking how we can do it better or do something differently. I like to bring attention to what patients and their families are experiencing.”

In 2024, David spearheaded the Auxiliary’s pledge of $125,000 in honor of Lima Memorial’s 125-year anniversary—exceeding expectations with a record-breaking donation of $158,500, the largest in the Auxiliary’s history. The collective impact of Lima Memorial’s volunteers was equally impressive, with more than 36,000 hours contributed in 2024, a service valued at more than $1 million.

“A lot of our volunteers helped make this historical donation possible. It’s not just me, it’s everybody.” David expresses.

David’s leadership, humility and passion embody the heart of Lima Memorial’s mission. His dedication ensures the spirit of volunteerism will continue to thrive for generations to come.

LIMA MEMORIAL VOLUNTEERS COMPASSION IN ACTION

Lima Memorial Volunteers are the heart of our health system, bringing care and compassion to every interaction. Whether they are welcoming visitors, assisting guests as escorts or helping in the Gift Shop, their dedication creates meaningful connections with the patients and families we serve.

This is a calling and a labor of love. It’s my opportunity to support everyone who walks through Lima Memorial’s doors.

– David Kah

It’s rewarding – you make friends and meet so many people. I even reunited with a fellow veteran I hadn’t seen since we left Vietnam in 1968.

– Dale Alkire

I have so many friends here!

I started volunteering to learn new skills and to help the community. My role helps to keep the hospital running smoothly.

LMHS AUXILIARY

DEDICATES FUNDRAISING TO BUILDING A HEALTHIER FUTURE

Throughout Lima Memorial’s 125th anniversary year, the Lima Memorial Auxiliary focused its fundraising efforts on strengthening the community’s health and well-being. Their dedicated generosity resulted in an incredible $158,500 donation to the Lima Memorial Foundation. Raised through Gift Shop sales, the annual Holiday Bazaar, Ways & Means initiatives and other activities, these funds will support the future healthcare needs of the greater Lima region.

A Life of Compassion That Continues to Give

Dorothy Thompson, one of Lima Memorial’s cherished volunteers, embodied the spirit of giving—a life defined by kindness, purpose and a steadfast commitment to her community. Her legacy continues to inspire, reflecting a profound impact on Lima Memorial Health System and all who were fortunate to know her.

Born in the small town of Leipsic, Ohio, Dorothy’s path to Lima was shaped by her faith and determination. After moving to Lima, she met her future husband at church. She then raised four children with a foundation of strong values - education, resilience and giving back.

“She believed in setting goals and helping others, no matter the challenges,” shares David Thompson, Dorothy’s son. “Giving back was at the core of how we were raised.”

Dorothy’s generosity extended far and wide, from sewing on Boy Scout badges for those without a sewing machine to organizing community meals and supporting global missionary efforts. While she dreamed of becoming a nurse, the post-Depression era realities prevented her from pursuing this goal. Instead, Dorothy channeled her passion for caring through decades of volunteerism, contributing nearly 23,000 hours at Lima Memorial after retiring in 1995. Her commitment to giving didn’t stop there. Dorothy ensured her legacy of compassion would endure by making a planned gift to the Lima Memorial Foundation, a reflection of her lifelong devotion to the hospital and her community.

“Mom’s lasting message would be to love one another and help each other out,” says David. “She believed in looking past differences—whether race, religion or politics—and seeing the humanity in everyone.”

Dorothy’s story exemplifies how one person’s compassion can leave an everlasting impact.

Giving back was at the core of how we were raised.

A planned gift is any gift made, in lifetime or at death, as part of your overall financial and / or estate plan. The Foundation offers many creative ways to structure a planned gift through bequests, retirement plans, gift annuities, charitable trusts and other charitable gift planning structures. A planned gift can offer tax benefits while also strengthening your legacy. Individuals who make a planned gift to the Lima Memorial Foundation are recognized with membership in the Heritage Society.

If you have included the Lima Memorial Foundation in your will, trust or other planned gift or desire more information about planned giving, please contact us at lmfoundation@limamemorial.org or 419-226-5087. We would be honored to help create a plan that fulfills your personal, financial and estate planning objectives.
