Sport is unifying, it’s community building. It’s about being part of something bigger than we are, it builds a sense of pride and achievement.

And, in these uncertain times we find ourselves in, when our love of sports helps benefit those around us and create better futures – that is something to truly celebrate.

Resident Leizil Esplin, along with 43 other passionate runners, will be running from Johannesburg to Cape Town in a 24-hour relay over a seven-day time period – to raise awareness and funds to assist in educating a potential leader from Grade 8 right the way through tertiary education. Read her story and the impact thereof on page 27 – 24 Hours to a New Future.

Secondly, we have an exciting event planned for Spring: Boots for Africa Family Sports Day. By donating a pre-loved sporting item on entry, such as an outgrown pair of football boots, running shoes or sports equipment, the Eagle Canyon community will participate in a variety of sports and activities, including mini training sessions with sporting greats. See page 9 for more.

Winter is now fully upon us, transforming our Estate with the most beautiful of winter skies and dramatic sunsets, and we encourage you to share photos to be used in our next edition.

Thank You EC Residents When the call for help goes out – EC Residents are the first to put up your hands.

Thank you for your generosity in assisting the young family of the late C Mothobi who worked at SAPS Honeydew. A request was put out in May to the community for perishables and tinned foods and we thank everyone who contributed to assist this family in need.

On the evening of Monday 28 June, we put out a call for help to all Residents as a mainline pipe had burst at Main Park and we needed assistance in logging with Johannesburg Water to expedite the concern.

Thank you to each and every Resident who assisted in the escalation process, not only did Joburg Water come on site, but worked until the early hours to fix the problem, resulting in a full return of water supply by the next morning.

A big thank you also goes out to our Ward Councillor, Leah Knott, our Security team and our Operations Team, who not only assisted on the evening, but with the clean up operations the next day.

Technology 101: With fibre to your home a reality on the Estate and two offerings available, here is a little tech talk decoded (According to the Business Tech experts).

Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON) technology: This is a point-to-multi-point solution. Multiple customers are connected to a single line. The network hardware will then dynamically allocate the bandwith.

Pros: As a single line is used for multiple customers, fibre packages through a GPON network are generally cheaper.

Cons: Bandwidth is shared with other other customers, which can make it unrealiable.

Active Ethernet: This is a point-to-point solution which is not shared with any other customers. Each customer has their own dedicated line.

Pros: Fibre packages that use Active Ethernet means that customers have their own dedicated fibre line and port.

Cons: As this is a dedicated line fibre packages may be more expensive in comparison. continued on page 7

Hot Water Bottle and Blanket Drive Share the warmth this winter with those who don’t have it by donating a hot water bottle (and cover) or blanket. The initiative, spearheaded by Debby Woodward of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s, aims to collect 300 hot water bottles and blankets for the Cradle of Hope, Krugersdorp.

Family Sports Day

When: Saturday 18 September 2021at the Soccer Field.

The Initiative:

Sponsored by: Linda Nunes of Pam Golding.

Boots for Africa collects pre-loved football boots, running shoes and sports equipment, delivering them to disadvantaged children and youth throughout Africa.

Providing shoes and equipment to these children helps to develop their skills and confidence, enhances their love of the game, and aids in delivering the many benefits associated with playing a sport.

The Event: By donating a pre-loved sporting item on entry, such as an outgrown pair of football boots, running shoes or sports equipment, the Eagle Canyon community will participate in a variety of sports and activities, including mini training sessions with sporting greats who are also Boots for Africa ambassadors.

For those who aren’t donating a sports item, R50 entry will be charged. All monies donated will be used to purchase new equipment and shoes.

This event aims to bring the Eagle Canyon community together through the love of sport and desire to help those less fortunate.

A quality product and service takes time to create. The opening of the doors of the long-anticipated spa, wellness and hair salon offering at the Clubhouse is no different. Residents and dynamic mother and daughter duo, Tracy Pereira and Kym Quincey, are the brains behind this new venture.

The strengths that are combined with this duo is Tracy’s strong business acumen and Kym’s passion for health,wellness and beauty. That and the knowledge of what they themselves feel should be “a true spa experience”. continued on page 12

Tracy and Kym share the inspiration behind the spa, their own personal experience and what they aim to create with Asher Spa:

My favourite spa treatment is a massage.

My favourite aesthetic treatment is microhydrabrasion.

For me, a spa experience means relaxation, skin rejuvenation, destress and me time. A good spa experience is dependent on good service and good facilities.

On average I aim to have my hair done at least once a month, two to three mani's and depending on my commitments, between one and three massages.

The beauty tip I live by came from my mother, who advised me to always take your makeup off at night and cleanse and nourish your skin.

When it comes to beauty and wellness products, I look for the ability to see change and improvement in my skin.

In my spa experience I look for ambience, professionalism and serenity.

The best spa experience I have ever had was in Singapore.

My pet peeve, when it comes to a spa experience, is therapists not being on time for a booked treatment.

The Spa: Asher means happy and blessed, the state we want our clients to feel.

Tracy

The inspiration behind the design and layout of the spa and hair salon is a mix of all the spa's I have visited throughout the world, with the accent on the “wow” factor on entry, coupled with a rejuvenating pleasurable experience and not just a treatment. We trust this will add value adding value to our Estate lifestyle that will be the pride of our Residents and the HOA. We want to achieve an upmarket, professional experience for clients that provides them with a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. We are aiming to have a one-stop shop for Residents.

When it comes to staff and therapists client service, character, the ability to work as a team, and personal cleanliness and presentation ticks the boxes for us.

When we chose our products for the spa we looked at variety, efficacy, price and what is trending.

When we looked at the services we want to offer our first priority was to create a client-centric product. Ultimately the experience, from the moment you walk through the door until you walk out again, needs to tick all your boxes when it comes to the ambience, treatment experience and professional staff.

Aesthetics I do as and when needed. A massage is a real treat when there is available time however, I would love to have this on a more regular basis.

In my spa experience I look for a period of time to completely reset and feel spoilt and treated.

The beauty tip I live by is to invest time and effort into your health , wellness and beauty.

When it comes to beauty and wellness products, I look for something that is results driven.

Kym

The best spa experience I ever had was in Mauritius. The therapist had the most magical massage hands and the surroundings were peaceful and serene.

My pet peeve when it comes to a spa has to be loud background noises and therapists who do not put in 100% - you can feel it.

The Spa: The name Asher represents so much for us, including bringing happiness or blessings to those who enter our doors.

The inspiration behind the design was to create an inviting space with a calming ambiance.

We want to provide our fellow Residents with a place they can come to for a spoil or a special treat. We want Residents to have all their beauty, wellness and aesthetic needs in one place, close to home and at a time convenient to them.

When it comes to staff and therapists, we want people who are well presented with an inviting and friendly personality. Ultimately, we are looking for staff who are service driven and are willing to go above and beyond to ensure our clients feel that they are being taken care of.

When we chose our products for the spa we looked at products that fit various needs, such as budget as well as preferences between cosmetic skincare ranges and aesthetic skincare ranges.

We wish to offer our clients the choice of having a relaxing treatment, as well as offering an aesthetic and health improvement through the addition of our wellness treatments.

The real cost of car theft It pays to mitigate your risk

AS SEEN ON ESTATE This series showcases the interesting, unusual or just striking flora and fauna as captured on camera by our Residents.

African Spoonbill Name: Platalea alba Photograph: Elvira Kaiser The African Spoonbill is from the Threskiornithidae family. This long-legged wading bird loves dams, shallow water, and marshy wetlands.

Its body is predominantly white, except for red legs, face and bill. The African Spoonbill is identified by its uniquely spoon-shaped bill. Interestingly the hatchlings are born with a short beak that within the first 30 days, develops into the spoon-like shape.

The African Spoonbill can live up to 30 years, has a height of 90cm and fully grown weighs between 1.3 to 2kg, with a wingspan of 120cm to 135cm.

These are social birds that are active during the day. They can be found singly, in pairs or in small groups. They spend their days walking the shallow water looking for food. The birds fish using their open spoon-like bill to catch food by swinging it

from side-to-side. As soon as the bird senses food, the bill snaps shut. African Spoonbills favour small fish, amphibians, crustaceans, insects and larvae.

African Spoonbills are generally monogamous, pairing up and breeding during winter and spring.

However, some males do try and mate with more than one female during the breeding season.

They nest in colonies either in trees or in reedbeds.

The nests are constructed built from sticks, and reeds and are lined with leaves. The female will construct the nest from materials collected by the male. The female lays between three and five eggs, the appearance of which are spotted with red, brown or blue. The eggs take approximately 29 days to hatch and are incubated by both parents. Once hatched, the chicks are looked after by both parents for a further 30 days until they are ready to leave the nest. The youngsters eat by reaching into their parent’s open beaks and take out regurgitated food. They stay with their parents for a further four weeks until they are ready to fly. The younger birds have yellow beaks until they come of age. When they are of breeding age, their faces are red and when mature (around three years), their beaks are grey. Duties are shared equally between the males and females and there are no obvious differences between the males and females in size or colour.

These large birds are introverts and if humans get too close, will fly away, with neck and legs extended. They are generally silent but will grunt when alarmed. They tend to socialise in groups of three to five, but you may find the African Spoonbills nesting with Heron and Ibis.

Did you know? The African Spoonbill is one of six spoonbill species and are related to the Ibis. The latin name, Platalea Alba, means pearl waterbird.

Fast Fact: The African Spoonbill is protected by the United Nations under the African-Eurasian Waterbird agreement.

This agreement is an independent treaty between African and European Nations, developed under the United Nation’s Environment Programme’s Convention on Migratory Species, which focuses on waterbird species that depend on wetlands and cross-national borders as part of their migratory patterns. The scope of this programme extends from the Arctic to South Africa and covers everything from the Middle East to Canadian archipelagos, as well as Africa and Europe.

Clove: These are the aromatic flower buds of an evergreen tree from the Myrtaceae family. They are great antioxidants and can pack a punch as they contain calcium, iron, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, Vitamin A and C.

Ginger:

Cinnamon: Once used as currency this pleasant tasting spice comes from the inner bark of a small evergreen tree. The bark is peeled and dried curling into the cinnamon stick rolls.

It can be used whole to diffuse flavour into a meal or ground and used as a dried spice, suitable for both savoury and sweet dishes.

Ginger root, which comes from a tropical flowering plant, can be used raw or dried and ground as a spice. As a member of the Zingiberaceae family it is a close relative of turmeric. Depending on the variety, the inside of the root can be yellow, red, or white. Ginger has a number of health benefits and anti-inflammatory properties, which aids in easing the symptoms of colds and flu, helps boost your immunity and can assist in relieving nausea and headaches.

Cinnamon’s health benefits are legendary: having anti-viral, anti-bacterial and antifungal properties.

Cinnamon helps to reduce blood pressure and contains antioxidants that have antiinflammatory effects. This spice also helps lower your blood sugar.

Chilli: Chilli peppers are the fruits of the Capsaicin pepper plants. As members of the nightshade family, they are related to bell peppers and tomatoes. There are a number of varieties of chilli peppers, each with their own health benefits. Chilli peppers are used as a spice and can be used raw, dried or powdered. Not only does chilli peppers help boost your immune system and health, but the active ingredient, capsaicin, has been scientifically proven to relieve cold and flu symptoms such as sneezing, a stuffy nose, postnasal drip and congestion.

Cayenne Pepper: A type of chilli pepper, Cayenne Pepper belongs to the nightshade family of flowering plants. They are closely related to bell peppers and jalapenos. 44 runners | 25 cyclists| 1550km | JHB to CT | 24 Hours | 7 Days In October, Liezil, along with 43 others, will don her running shoes and compete in a grueling 24-hour relay from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Not for fitness, or to achieve a personal fitness goal, but rather to raise money to help educate a worthy scholar through high school and tertiary education as part of the MAD Leadership Foundation. This Mad2Run team of 2021 aims to raise a minimum of R2 million to enable two underprivileged gifted scholars the opportunity to have their high school and up to a three-year university degree covered. The R1 million each covers all their expenses, including accommodation, transport, uniforms, stationery, nutrition and mentorship.

Liezil’s friend Linda told her about the Mad2Run initiative after a friend of a friend, Mel, participated in the 2020 event. “Linda gave me a call in December 2020 saying that I am the only crazy friend she knows that will say yes, so I said ‘yes’, not really knowing as yet what I had committed to. She told me about Mel who did the event and how fabulous and life-changing the experience was.”

Linda, herself, is no stranger to fitness, having completed Iron Man in 2008 and Comrades in 2010. “I’ve always loved running and to run for a cause like Mad2Run allows me to do what I love and make a difference.” Liezil adds that Linda encouraged her to do a run in Eagle Canyon back in 2009. “I nearly died. Instead of doing a quick 3kms, we ended up running 6km.” However, what initially started as a friend request soon became a habit that Liezil enjoyed. Her longest run to date has been this year in preparation for the October event as for training the team is expected to run a minimum of 20kms every day for seven days.

The motivation to participate is simple – both women love a good challenge. “We are looking forward to run through our beautiful country and explore new roads we have yet to see,” says Liezel. “We have been told that the night sky in Sutherland is magical and we are extremely excited to view this.” But more importantly, is the cause.

“We are creating awareness for Mad2Adventure.” Made of up Mad2Run and Mad2Ride, both events involve teams running or cycling from Johannesburg to Cape Town in a relay format. “The Mad2Run and Mad2Ride athletes push their bodies and minds to the limits in order for us to maximise the amount we can raise through this fundraising initiative.”

24-hour relay is sectioned into eight hour, 80kms shifts, with 20 shifts in total over the week.

Each shift is made up of six runners, completing around 20kms during each shift at an average pace of 6 minutes and 30 seconds. Since the first Mad2Run back in 2014, close on R5,5million has been raised.

To train for this event, Liezil enlisted the services of Travis Michelson, Biokineticist and owner of Eagle Canyon Gym and Wellness Centre, who has put her on a training programme to ensure that she is fit, strong and able to achieve the goals set. “The running programme has increased my fitness tremendously and it is amazing how much better I am running.” Liezil adds that her personal trainer, Indiah, has ensured that she is strong for what lies ahead through strength and HITT training.

But this event is more than just being physically strong, it’s about being mentally strong as well.

“Shane is our netball team and life coach. He sends us the most inspirational and motivational messages weekly. These messages help me with my mental preparation,” shares Liezil.

She adds that another form of mental preparation, is to run on the treadmill. “it is the most mundane training but if anyone can run on a treadmill for an hour, then you most certainly can run half a marathon – or for that matter – all the way to Cape Town.”

No matter how tough the training gets, Liezil says that what keeps her motivated is the students whose lives she is changing. “It is overwhelming to see and experience what people will do to make a difference in someone else’s life. No matter how big or small the gesture the impact is enormous. I am proud to be able to have my legs to work to make a difference.”

In preparation Liezil and Linda participated in their first MiniMad in May. The weekend event gave them insight into how Mad2Run will work in October. “We quickly realised that running is hard but nothing can prepare you for the long shifts and sleep deprivation.

Sleep will most certainly be the most challenging part of this journey,” Liezil shares.

As part of the MiniMad each participant was given a letter from a scholar whose life has been changed by the Mad Foundation – a personal glimpse into how lives are changed, and futures are created.

matter how tough the training gets. As Liezil shares, this past year of Covid has changed her outlook on life. “My biggest lesson learnt is to not postpone things but do what you enjoy today as tomorrow is not a guarantee.”

Liezil adds that when this opportunity arose she immediately grabbed it. “My goal personally is to push myself to my limits and run as many kilometers as I can in October. I want to raise as much money as possible so that we can enable enough scholars to fulfill their academic dreams,” says Liezil. Ultimately, these future leaders will return to become ambassadors for the foundation and mentors for new scholars on the programme – what a legacy.”

I also recently founded an initiative called Grad-Sphere, which is a platform to help students to be career prepared and ready after obtaining their qualification. When I started this community space on LinkedIn, my aim was to support students/graduates to use LinkedIn effectively so they can attract better career opportunities as well as sparking interest in being intentional about life after university. The Grad-Sphere page offers free valuable and beneficial content to prepare graduates and students to reach their next level as valuable professionals or assets to the job market. At the moment I manage and create and design content for the Grad-Sphere Page on LinkedIn. Furthermore, I have just began a graduate programme at Multichoice and cannot wait to learn more in my first corporate environment.

To be honest, I am in the phase of discovering and exploring more about how I fit into this dynamic ecosystem of change makers. With that being said, I am passionate about strategic marketing and communications as I believe in the power that lies in purposeful communication.

The world needs marketing gamechangers that redefine communication especially in changing and shaping people's mindsets.

Honestly, I do not know what I will achieve first, but I promise to be a disruptor in the marketing industry and in the entrepreneurship field. From the Fitness Expert: Resident Biokineticist and owner of Eagle Canyon Gym and Wellness Centre, Travis Michelson, has been prepping Liezil mentally and physically for this endurance event. Here’s some tips he has to offer should Residents wish to take up a challenge such as this.

PREPARING FOR AN EVENT LIKE THIS is complicated and requires a lot of planning. Physically there are eight training principles to consider when developing a cardio respiratory training programme.

Some of these principles include ensuring that the training programme is individualised, applying the correct overload factors, facilitating the rest and recovery periods to allow for adaptation, and progressing at the right times and by the right amounts. The initial objective of the preparation phase is to achieve a high aerobic endurance base, on which the future training is built on.

The importance of this phase cannot be emphasised enough. The future training is massively dependent on the preparation phase and lasts three to six months.

Towards the end of the preparation phase and going into the pre-competition phase, the mental preparation becomes more prominent and various methods are used to ensure the person is race-ready and fully aware of the requirements for race day.

LIEZIL’S TRAINING SCHEDULE started with a 5km Time Trial where I calculated her threshold pace and threshold heart rate. She had a great starting base since she has always been active by going to gym and playing netball, etc. After the Threshold Test I started developing her training plan and applying the eight training principles in her workouts. I use an online training/fitness app to give her the workouts and it allows me to track her compliance, fatigue levels and fitness levels. I can then make changes to her workouts to ensure the correct Overload is applied and she progresses according to plan.

FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO START RUNNING, I created three running transformation plans during lockdown to help those who want to get into running or would like to run better or faster.

1. Couch to 5km: This plan is suited to someone who is new to running or has not run in a long time. It is aimed at that the person who is not unable to run consecutively for 10 minutes and is designed to work you through the basics so by the end you can run a 5k with minimal to no walking. The sessions may gradually increase in frequency and difficulty over the 12-week programme.

2. 10km Running: This programme is designed for those who have recently taken up running and are trying to build up their endurance to run a 10km with minimal or no walking. This programme is also suited to those runners who run a maximum of three hours per week, run three to four times a week, or can run 5km and are looking to improve their running time. The sessions increase in frequency and difficulty and are faster than the beginner’s programme.

3. Run Fast: This third transformational programme is for the person who has been running for a few months or years and now want to improve their times for a set distance or goal. This programme is suited for those who run three to five hours a week, run five times a week, can do a 10 or 21km without stopping and want to improve their running time or want to complete a half or full marathon with minimal to no walking, or who has a solid base, but requires further improvement in their times for specific events.
