explains, is that these children often get hooked on drugs to get them through the day, the boys end up begging on the streets while the girls get used for prostitution.

Organisations such as Kids Haven in Benoni and MES, with centres in Hillbrow and Kempton Park, aim at making a difference in these vulnerable children’s lives. Through the fundraising efforts of StreetSmart this programme assists in getting these children into an education system, thus helping to create a good ripple effect rather than perpetuating a negative one.

Giving Back Thank you to all Jessica’s customers.

Over the past four months more than R56 000 has been contributed to the StreetSmart cause.

As a reminder: StreetSmart South Africa raises funds for street children through participating restaurants, accommodation establishments and wine tasting centres, amongst others. The initiative has been in operation for 15 years under the founding patronage of Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The funds raised go to approved organisations that run programmes (with a strong focus on education) for the normalisation of the vulnerable and street children.

StreetSmart Johannesburg Coordinator Jenny Stricker-Greef explains that there is a very small window in which to “catch” a vulnerable child who enters the street life and to prevent them from becoming another statistic. The harsh reality, she

All funds raised through StreetSmart are used for educational support and in most cases are used to pay educators salaries or to get additional support staff. With the initiative operating in Johannesburg Jessica's is supporting this initiative through the five outlets: Jessica’s Eagle Canyon, Jessica’s Featherbrooke, Jessica’s Clearwater, Coppa Eagle Canyon and Coppa Featherbrooke, to help gain the traction it needs within the Johannesburg hospitality market.

How it works: The beauty of this lies in in simplicity - a small card on the table and in the bill folder informs patrons that a voluntary R5 will automatically be added to any bill over R150. If patrons would like to add more, or none at all, they simply need to inform the waitering staff.

While StreetSmart is a national organisation every cent raised in Johannesburg goes to the Johannesburg beneficiaries currently Kids Haven and MES. All operational costs of StreetSmart itself are sponsored.

There is a place and a space for all three to aid in your recovery. A Physiotherapist is ideal to help diagnose and manage the first stages of your injury. They can assess the extent of the damage and help to reduce the pain and swelling. They also help to educate you as to your injury and treatment as well as guide you through rehab sessions. The aim is to improve your range of motion and muscle function with stretching and strengthening. Once your pain is gone, they may refer you to a biokineticist. The Biokineticist will prescribe specific exercises that will get you back to full speed, with regard to your strength, flexibility, endurance, power, speed, and balance, dependent on your needs.

A Biokineticist uses exercises backed by science and research to improve your condition, be it injury or managing chronic conditions such as diabetes. They can even help create exercise programmes that will benefit you in your chosen sport. A Chiropractor focuses more on joint health, mobility and alignment and does this through manual manipulation techniques. This can include adjustments to your spine and other joints to relieve tension in your muscles.

There has been a marked increase in criminal activity with reported “followhomes” and hijackings up by 20% nationwide. As a proactive measure to assist in safeguarding our Residents, we would like to introduce you to our new Special Tactical Ops Team. Please join us in welcoming Patric, Meshack and Nkosinathi to Eagle Canyon.

The team took up their duties from 1 March. They will be stationed outside the Estate, patrolling Main Gate on Blueberry Road and Residents Gate on Paul Kruger, on a rotational basis.

Our existing security will alternate with the Special Ops vehicles at each gate to ensure both are covered during operational hours (Residents Gate

closes at 22h00). This added security and increased visibility will hopefully provide peace of mind and act as a deterrent for would-be criminals. We request all Residents to remain vigilant and alert when entering or exiting the Estate.

Smiles are contagious we find ourselves returning them without even realising that we have.

Time to Smile continued from page 14 One of the unintentional casualties of wearing a face mask is your emotions and in particular your smile. In an article: Masks are hiding our facial expressions. How can we adapt? published on Advisory.com, a health awareness site, David Matsumoto, a Psychologist Professor at San Francisco State University and director of a research company, Humintell, explains that we lose our social smile when we wear masks.

The “felt smile” known as the Duchenne smile, crinkles your eyes and lights up your face and can sometimes be seen behind a mask – but the typical smile or social smile only engages the corners of your mouth, which is almost imperceptible to view under your mask or buff.

DID YOU KNOW? There are 19 different types of smiles only six of which are for happiness.

Even though you are required to wear a mask in public you can still convey your positive emotions. Research, conducted in 2018, by Pablo Arias, audio engineer and cognitive scientist at the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/ Music in Paris, and his team found that a smile not only changes the face but also the voice. Arias describes this as an auditory smile. This supports research conducted in 2008 by the University of Portsmouth, lead by Amy Drahota, found that some people have “smilier” voices that others, adding to the science that our expressions pack an informational punch.

When we listen to people speaking to us, we unconsciously pick up on cues which help us interpret the emotion of the conversation – even if we can’t see the emotions themselves.

3. Smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin – all of which help you feel better.

4. A smile works as a natural facelift as the muscles you use to smile also lift your face. Not only do you feel better you look younger as well.

5. Studies have shown that smiling helps you feel more confident.

6. Smiling helps you see the positive side of life. Even if are feeling down and your smile is forced this still sends a positive message to your brain.

7. Smiling can change your mood when you are feeling down. By smiling, you trick your body into feeling happier as a smile activates those areas in your brain that releases the mood-boosting neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin.

On Course An update on all things golf

Did You Know?

Our Golf Course is the only Links course in Johannesburg and one of two in Gauteng. A true Links course is demanding, unforgiving and has external elements that make playing golf more challenging.

The difference between a Links golf course and other golf courses is that the golfer needs to work with the natural elements. The layout of the holes also forms part of a true links course, with the first 9 going out to the farthest point from the Clubhouse and the second 9 bringing you back in towards the Clubhouse.

Club Championships Dates: 13 & 14 March

"This year was a hotly contested championship in each division..."

The 16th annual Club Championships were hosted on the 13 and 14 March. With 132 players, this is believed to have been the biggest field we have ever hosted. The Course was in great condition thanks to the hard work of the Matkovich team.

Held over two days, the event included a small function on Saturday night with live music and culminated in prizegiving on the Sunday.

This year was a hotly contested championship in each division.

Our ladies champion was once again won by Kera Healey after fighting off challenges from Kaitlyn Van De Vyver and Jacqui Akers.

Our B Division was also a tightly contested championship with Rosemary Rhodes coming out on top after a great final day round. continued on page 20

C Division was closer than many expected after Terrence Ladner started with a 10-shot lead, who managed to hang on for the victory.

In our B division section we had our first play-off for the title when Brand van der Walt and Yougan Govender ended on the same score. A sudden death play-off at the 10th Tee had Brand van der Walt playing a great bunker shot to save par and claim victory.

In our A division there was good competition for the top spot.

Landon Ferguson played hard and placed himself into contention but unfortunately came unstuck on the 17th hole. Dijon Tintinger our leader after Day 1 unfortunately couldn’t hold onto the lead after making a double bogey on the 12th, Newcomer and experienced competition golfer Ryan Dreyer showed all his skill by playing a great second round of 2 under par 70 to claim the Club Championship on an excellent score of 141, 3 under par.

A special mention must go out to the Matkovich staff for the course conditions, Jessica’s for the great food and Halfway experience, Golf Committee for their assistance and to the ProShop staff and Operations Department for their help and hard work. We would like to also give recognition to our main sponsors Propvest Real Estate & Schindlers for contributing to a successful day.

When severe weather becomes the norm While there is little that you can do to prevent a flood or a storm, there are some important tips that can help protect your personal safety and assets during severe weather conditions. Aon provides the following advice during extreme weather:

Take special note of weather warnings and if possible, avoid being on the road or out and about during such times.

•

If you can, rather avoid driving in heavy downpours. Never attempt to drive through a flooded area of the road – even a few centimetres of water are powerful enough to sweep a car away.

•

Look out for treacherous potholes that could be hiding in the guise of a puddle.

Your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover any damage to the structure of the building as a direct result of freak rainstorms but will not cover maintenance-related damage. This means that while your insurance will respond by repairing the damage caused by a leaking roof, it will not cover the repair of the roof’s waterproofing if it deteriorated due to a lack of maintenance.

•

If caught in a flash flood on the road, get yourself to safety as quickly as possible – if you can, get out of the vehicle and get to higher ground. If you can’t get out of your vehicle, don’t close all the windows as the water will cause a vacuum and trap you in the car.

•

•

Many car accident claims are due to slippery roads and potholes. Tyre damage is not an uncommon occurrence. Check your tyre tread and replace worn tyres - an accident claim could potentially be repudiated if the tread is deemed insufficient to have stopped the vehicle in time. The legally required minimum tread depth is 1.6mm.

If you are faced with flooding of your property, move your belongings out of the water – the longer the water is left sitting, the more damage it causes. Try and clear away as much of the water as you possibly can to prevent further and permanent damage.

•

Half a metre of paving along the perimeter of a building can help with damp problems.

•

Keep gutters clear of debris to facilitate proper drainage around the house. Protect inlet/outlet pipes of any drains and storm water drainage against blockage from debris.

•

Increase your following distance and reduce your speed to allow enough time to react.

•

•

Watch for motorists swerving to avoid objects in the road and be prepared to do the same.

Check the waterproofing and flashings on the roof on a regular basis.

•

•

Carp Name: Echeveria Elegans Photograph: Ishlam Bikes with a Common Carp

It is believed that the Common Carp came to the South African shores with the colonial British during the 18th Century as an ornamental fish. The popularity of the fish lead to their rapid spread according to the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB).

Dr Josephine Pegg, SAIAB Postdoctoral Researcher, in her article The good, the bad and the muddy, shares that Mr C A Fairbridge, a member of the Cape Legislative Assembly, imported six carp from England planning to “make our barren rivers a source of food”. The same barren waters that were already home to local fish and fauna.

Another entrepreneur, Mr Ekstein of Rondebosch, in an 1866 article in the South African Advertiser and Mail, brought three Carp from England which he placed in a pond in his estate. The story goes that after a time period he had netted 391 fish and offered 100 fish to “any gentleman having a place for their reception”. continued on page 29

Today Carp are found in major river systems and small dams across the country including our own Eagle Canyon.

A popular fishing spot by the new jetty on Dam 2 has recently seen three of the Estate’s biggest carp being recorded at 15.2kg, 16kg and the most recent at 20.6kg. All fishing on the Estate is catch and release only.

Carp are widely found throughout the world, showcasing their adaptability and ability to survive in differing and difficult conditions. Carp also cope well in water with low oxygen levels as well as high and very low temperatures.

Carp are identifiable by huge bodies humped between heads and the start of the dorsal fins. The big heads hasve a fleshy protractile mouth with four barbels. The dorsal fin is long with three to four dorsal spines and 17 to 22 branched rays. The fins are almost saw-like, capable of cutting through a fishing line. The back of the Carp is brownish in colour and the sides have a yellowish tinge. The stomach is yellow or whitish in colour and the fins and tail are usually brown.

The Common Carp is the main type of carp. Genetic mutations have led to some variation in the type of scales and the colour of the skin. Scaling is determined by two genes, S-Scaly and N-Nude. Depending on whether these genes are recessive or dominant, will define the variety of the carp. The two varieties found on the Estate are the Common Carp and the Mirror Carp.

Skin colour is dependent on both the environment and genetic factors.

According to anglinks.co.za, in summer when the oxygen levels are lower and the water is warmer, carp can be found in the shallow areas of the dams where there is more oxygen. They will migrate to areas of shelter. Try if possible to be on the windward shore (wind blowing towards you) as this is where the highest concentration of oxygen and food can be found. In winter, the oxygen levels are higher, but the water itself is colder so carp are more likely to move towards the deeper parts of the

dam or where the water is warmer.

Carp tend to spawn between August to October, when water temperatures are recorded 16 to 20 degrees, this is to allow the youngsters to build up enough fat reserves for the following winter. However, if the conditions are right, carp can spawn multiple times a year.

Have you ever noticed carp thrashing around in the grass or reed beds? This usually means the carp are spawning and serve to spread the eggs around to increase chances of survival.

Catch and Release: When any fish is taken from the water it puts stress on the fish itself as well as its internal organs. The buoyancy of the water keeps pressure around the fish in the right proportions so it is important to limit these stresses. When holding a carp for those trophy photos, slide your wet hands underneath the fish, gently holding the pectoral and anal fins between your fingers. Don’t pick up or hold the fish under its stomach as this puts pressure on the fish’s intestines.

Carp are wily creatures which makes them a sought-after catch and release fish for those looking for a thrill. As they have the largest brain of any freshwater fish, they have been known to memorise things that affect their environment and can outsmart clever angling tactics.

Our offices have already been cleaned By now, most workplaces should have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitised according to COVID protocols. In addition, cleaning should be taking place more regularly and we understand that cosmetic changes may add a bit of strain to budgets, however, spending a bit of money on improving the general atmosphere of the work environment is an excellent investment as it results in a general upliftment of spirits and a general productivity boost.

Adding some indoor plants, for example, does wonders – at a relatively low cost. Plants are a very effective way to add a design element to any space and they also contribute to a healthier environment by reducing carbon dioxide and increasing oxygen levels.

There are other cost-effective ways to improve your surroundings. Fixing any broken fittings, changing blown light bulbs, updating artwork and replacing signage that is either out of date or faded.

Some really basic changes include taking a look at the things we usually look past because they are always there, like notice boards. Take a good look and see what is no longer relevant. Remove all redundant or outdated notices and rearrange the board to look neat and fresh. This change will make people ‘notice’ the board again.

Other measures to boost mental well-being in the office Do you have an outdoor space? Have you done what you can to make it attractive and welcoming? Giving people a pleasant outdoor environment to escape to for 5 or 10 minutes helps reduce stress. It provides a platform for colleagues to network and interact in an informal space and can boost creativity when feeling ‘stuck’.

You may also want to look into improving your security to make staff feel safer in the workplace. There are so many new and innovative security systems available and you may be pleasantly surprised at how costeffective many of these solutions are.

Songs for Life Ever had that stadium feeling when you hear a song – one that you can feel from your toes up? Music can empower you to do great things. But not all songs have the same effect.

In a 2014 study, conducted by Dennis Hsu of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, looked at this phenomenon. He and his team watched how athletes use music to prepare themselves for the game ahead. “The ways these athletes immerse themselves in the music – some with their eyes steely shut and some gently nodding along with the beats – seem as if the music is mentally preparing and toughening them up for the competition about to occur,” he shared at the time of the study, The Music of Power: Perceptual and Behavioral Consequences of Powerful Music, published in Social Psychology and Personality Science.

Hsu found that listening to high-power music heavy on the bass (think Queen’s We Are the Champions), when you need that little extra push, can lead to more desirable outcomes when it comes to job interviews, social perceptions, negotiations and even employee performance. “People might want to explore whether pumping up their favourite tunes can quickly ease them into an empowered mental state before going into a first date, an important client meeting, or a job interview,” he says.

More recent research conducted in early 2020 by UC Berkeley scientists, found that the subjective experience of music across cultures can be tracked over as many as 13 emotions, including amusement, joy, eroticism, beauty, relaxation, sadness, triumph, anxiety, scariness, annoyance, defiance and feeling pumped up. This is across music genres, including rock, folk, jazz, classical, marching band, experimental and heavy metal. Alan Cowen, a UC Berkeley doctoral student in neuroscience who led the study commented at the time: “Music is an universal language but we don’t always pay enough attention to what it’s saying and how it’s being understood.”

Back in 2015, a music-loving Dutch neurologist, Dr Jacob Jolij, researched what qualifies as the most mood-boosting tunes. Jolij commented that music is personal and usually depends on social contexts and your own associations, however, mood-boosting songs are faster than your average song (usually between 140 to 150 beats per minute), written in a major key and focus on happy events or complete nonsense.
