Having been a child myself in the early 50s, there are classic books I feel should never be neglected in a child’s reading repertoire.

Though I don’t have the space to mention them all, these were the stuff of our children’s early homeschool reading aloud experience. They are all still around and available today because they strike a chord in all who read them – parent and child alike.

They set an enriching foundation in the heart and mind of children age 2 through 7 or 8. In my opinion, reading aloud should continue even after a child has mastered reading on his or her own and beyond.

Parent – be honest – you’ve only got so much time for reading aloud with your children! The last thing you want to do is choose a dud.

If you are new to this, I hope this reading list makes the choosing easier and provides many delightful reading hours for you and your child!

9 tips to (financially) survive retrenchment In tough economic times, retrenchment has become widespread business practice. Sound knowledge and decisive, informed action have been the saving grace of those who have pulled through. Glacier by Sanlam offers a range of investment solutions for those wanting to preserve their retirement savings following retrenchment or wanting to invest discretionary savings for their future security. Sherwin Govender, Business Development Manager at Glacier by Sanlam, offers some tips to help you (financially) survive this stressful time.

Tip #5: Appoint a financial planner This truly is the best time to get a financial planner.

There are some big, important financial decisions to be made, and a qualified financial planner can help you make them with confidence.

Tip #6: Step away from your pension fund Cashing in 100% of your pension fund can be the most financially damaging decision you can make. If you cash in the entire pot, you’re robbing yourself at age 60 – it’s that simple.

Tip #1: Don’t take it personally You dedicated much of your time and energy to your job, and the reality is that retrenchment is not your fault. Your company probably came to a point where it needed to make a financial decision for its future existence.

Tip #7: Transfer your pension fund into a preservation fund As the name suggests, preservation funds protect your pension money. You can withdraw it later but the longer it stays there, the better. Together with your financial planner, you can decide how the money should be invested.

Tip #2: Overhaul your CV and get it out there Looking for a new job takes time. Ask the HR specialist handling your retrenchment about the possibility of redeployment. In big organisations there may often be opportunities in other divisions.

Be open to the possibility of having to take a pay-cut in a new role.

Tip #8: Check if you have retrenchment cover Check the cover on your credit card or retail store accounts. Perhaps built-in retrenchment cover you didn’t know about is included in your service fees.

If you have a policy that covers retrenchment specifically, good f or you. It could help ease your financial burden.

Tip #3: Reinvent yourself and your career, but … … within reason. If you are thinking of starting a new business venture, be realistic about the projects and business ideas that might tempt you. Now is not the time to take uncalculated risks.

Tip #9: Speak up Don’t be embarrassed to ask for better interest rates, reduced installments on your accounts or even payment holidays. But whatever you do, don’t ignore your debt obligations. If you are struggling to keep up your debt payments, a conversation with the credit manager at your bank or a debt counsellor will go a long way in preventing judgements and blacklisting.

Tip #4: Cut your household budget Now is the time to go through your monthly household budget with a fine-tooth comb. You need to be strict and clinical about the expenses that are unavoidable (e.g. your bond repayment or kids’ school fees) and those that are luxuries and can be suspended until you have a regular income again.

Determine your current health status.

A good place to start accessing your roadmap is to get to grips with your own pathology markers / genetic impairments and food intolerances. This forms the essential basis of your unique roadmap and this information helps to define risk and to determine optimal functionality in the body.

In a person’s world there are never enough hours in the day, let alone time for proper exercise and taking care of one’s self. Health concerns due to incorrect eating patterns, stress, lack of sleep and ongoing adrenal fatigue and burnout seem to be the order of the day. Not to mention the state that some find themselves after a 3 month lockdown, physically and emotionally.

After conducting many pathology and genetic assessments for clients, we realise every time, that longevity hinges on what we do today. Disease can be prevented, and current conditions can be reversed. This is achievable if we know what we are dealing with and how each of us is individually designed. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to genetics and how each one of us will respond to a certain way of eating, an exercise programme or even the way we manage stress. Your road map is only suited to YOU.

The consequences of the typical lifestyle lead to the risk of disease, early death or premature ageing. The method and steps we employ can be applied to everyone that desires to improve their health.

When we consult with a client and ask about the common cholesterol marker, for example, we hardly ever receive a definitive answer. However, asked when last their vehicle was serviced and whether the workshop identified fault, we get the full list.

Does this make sense that our material possessions have become more important than our own bodies? Have we forgotten that health is the new wealth?

Have you ever considered that 'wellness companies' the world over rarely promote that you take notice of the various markers that provide you with a picture of your state of well-being and health?

Normally an assessment result is considered within a parameter, called a reference range. When in range you are given the green light.

Tick. Now remember, in range could have a vast difference on the true state of your health . Not monitoring your results over the years, could also end up in a diseased (or is that dis-eased) state sooner, rather than later.

The next step is to anaylse the results. If markers are out, a plan will need to be designed to compensate what the body is lacking or even getting too much of. This is bringing the body to a state of homeostasis. to bring the body back to balance. This is a process where you learn what your body requires.

Once you understand what your body requires you can monitor the results every few months, annually or other.

You will know within a short period of time how your body begins to change for the better. We can prove it! It happens all the time - be encouraged.

Giving tweens and teens (and in some cases even younger children) complete freedom in the online world is giving them too much autonomy that they aren’t ready for yet. It is placing adult privileges and responsibility on their shoulders, but they are not adults. Plus, let’s face it, most of us know plenty of adults who don’t handle themselves appropriately online.

Research has shown that the frontal lobe of the human brain doesn’t fully develop until sometime in a person’s 20’s, and this is the part of the brain that controls impulse control and risk-taking behaviour. Therefore, teenagers are notorious for making poor and short-sighted decisions, and why children in general need parental oversight and involvement.

Just one cautionary tale of many from across the nation is the recent story out of Colorado where more than HALF the students at one high school were caught participating in a nude photo exchange. Hundreds of photos of a sexual nature were discovered including children that were as young as 8th graders.

Of course, we all want to think the best of our kids, but understanding and not being naive about their limitations is how we keep our children safe and help them learn to navigate the world around them.

No one questions why we stand beneath our toddler when they try to climb the jungle gym for the first time. It’s because we don’t know for sure what they are capable of yet and we need to be there in case they fall. We don’t refuse to attend parent/teacher conferences or throw away their report cards without looking at them, because we’re afraid our children will think we are invading their privacy.

And as our children get old enough to drive and to go out with friends on their own, we don’t require them to tell us where they will be going because we don’t trust them. We do it because as parents we recognize it is our responsibility to know where our kids are, who they are with and what they are doing.

Parental controls – Managing kids' technology Why is it any different when it comes to what they are doing on a computer, on a mobile phone or any technological device? Why do we care who they are hanging out with in real life, but we may have no idea who they are friends with on Facebook or Instagram or Snapchat? Why would we keep them from watching PG-13 and R rated movies, because they are too old for them, but we don’t investigate what the age recommendations are for many apps they are using or even various forms of social media?

What every parent needs to know about social media for kids If we are going to be involved parents, who take an interest in our children’s lives, that has to include technology, because think about the amount of time our kids spend using technology today. We can’t exclude something that consumes almost an equal percentage of their time as many of their extra-curricular activities.

Also, even the best kids make mistakes. That is part of growing-up. Think back to when you were in middle school and high school and some of the unfortunate choices you made. Now, imagine if some of those stories, or worse yet photos, made their way onto today’s social media.

Unfortunately, until this generation, most youthful screw-ups often faded away with the passing of time. Now, one stupid Facebook post or a photo

texted to a single person can be passed onto hundreds and even thousands of people in an instant and can never be deleted from the online identity that will follow our children their entire lives.

Is it unfair that the stakes are SO high for our kids? Absolutely. Are the risks potentially overblown like so many dangers for our kids these days?

Probably. Welcome to the unique challenges of modern parenting.

The real truth parents need to know about tweens, teens, and texting acronyms Meeting those challenges though can be done using the tried and true parenting techniques of setting expectations and just staying engaged with our kids and aware of what they are doing.

If we are upfront with our kids that we will be checking what they post online, the people that they are communicating with and the photos they are taking and sending, then it’s not spying. We’re not being secretive or sneaky and we’re not invading their privacy.

Technology is a privilege our children enjoy, it is not a right, it is something they earn. Privacy when using technology is the same. As they get older and demonstrate they deserve more freedom, we can give it. Whether it is their everyday lives or their online lives, the rules should be the same and our kids need to know we care about and will be involved in both equally. We owe them that much.

Landscape Photography Composition Tips

How is it that two photographers can visit the same landscape at the same time, but one of them manages to take a better photo? It’s not about equipment, or camera settings, or sharpness.

Instead, it’s all about composition. Composition is how you arrange the elements of your photograph to guide a viewer’s eye.

How do you pick a good composition for your landscape photos?

There are two elements that matter more than anything else: simplicity and visual weight.

Simplicity A good landscape photo says what you want it to say, and nothing more. Every single element of the photograph adds to your message. It forms a strong, cohesive whole.

Simple — but how do you make it happen?

The first step is to have the right mindset. Always start by thinking about simplicity. Which items can you leave out of your photo to make it stronger? Don’t get rid of everything in your photo, of course. That’s not simplicity — that’s boring. An empty photograph of the sky might be simple, but it doesn’t say anything in the first place or have a reason to exist. continue on page 17

Instead, just clarify your message. When you’re at an amazing landscape, try to capture the character of the scene as clearly as possible. Your viewers should look at the photo and feel the same emotions as you.

This isn’t just relevant in photography.

Magicians and stage performers often wave their hands dramatically to draw attention away from something else — and this trick usually succeeds even when you know it’s happening.

This also holds true for landscape photography. When you want to emphasize (or de-emphasize) a particular subject, there are several options at your disposal. For one, you can wait for the light to start shining in a different spot. Or, you can adjust your composition. Postprocessing also falls under this umbrella, since it’s all about picking which elements you want to emphasize.

Landscape Photography Composition Tips Continued from page 17

Visual weight What’s the first thing you notice when you look at a landscape photo? It depends upon the photo, of course — and that’s the key.

Sometimes, you’ll notice the setting sun before anything else. Other times, you’ll pay attention to an interesting foreground, or a mountain in the distance. It all depends upon the interest levels of each element in the image. And that’s visual weight: the amount of attention that a particular part of the photo demands.

Take a look at the photo above. Which items have the highest visual weight?

The first thing you notice here is probably the horse or the sun. Maybe a few people will look at the fence or the distant hill before anything else.

You know what you didn’t look at first? The bottom-right corner. Why not?

It’s dark and empty. Until I mentioned it, there was no reason to look there at all. In other words, it doesn’t attract attention, since it has almost zero visual weight.

There’s no mystery or secret about which items have high visual weight. The same elements that catch our attention in real life do exactly the same in photography: high contrast, vivid colours, bright objects, people, animals, eyes, and so on. Visual weight is important because it pulls your viewer’s eye across a photo. That’s critical. You control the path people take through your images. Even though you can’t know the exact path a viewer will take through the frame, you can form a very good idea of the most likely places,

The key is that you can get your viewer to pay attention to the good elements of an image, and you can minimize the importance of anything that takes away from your message. Perhaps your photo has distracting highlights near one of the edges, for example. By altering your composition and post-processing, you have the power to improve that area and re-shape how a viewer sees the image.

Visual weight is the foundation of many other elements of composition: balance, structure, positive space, and more. Figure out what attracts the most attention, and then compose your photo with that knowledge in mind. Don’t let your viewer wander aimlessly through a photo. Instead, use your knowledge of the landscape’s visual weight to give your photos a solid, intentional structure.

Conclusion I think composition is the most personal part of landscape photography. It’s certainly among the most important.

When it comes to decorating your home there's a number of key elements to consider. Here, Shannon Vos shares his top home decoration tips to help with the task.

You will want to know where you are headed before you get there because no one likes that kind of surprise, especially when it involves quite a bit of cash.

Getting your home decor right can seem like a challenging task – especially when it seems like the trends are always changing! Here, interior architect Shannon Vos shares his top home decoration tips to help you style your home like the pros.

Interior design is the art of understanding human behaviour to create spaces within a building, inside and out. Interior decoration, though, is the adornment of a space with life and beauty.

One can be seen as quite clinical, the other full of emotion and human story, and tackling any interiordecoration project can seem daunting to say the least.

But broken down into steps, as plentiful as they may be, is the only way to take on such a mammoth task.

It's only then that we can slowly breakdown the process and articulate all of our decisions.

Here's what you need to know...

Do your research Find your style, your niche, your look. Easier said than done, right? Look around you, pore over magazines, save Pins, start boards, 'like' posts and you will start to see patterns in what you're saving.

Create a vision board of all the beautiful images and things you like, and you'll find certain styles and looks coming through.

A step further is to use the home you're living in as a basis for a style. A chalet in the mountains, for instance, would look silly styled all coastal and beach-like. Use what you love and the home you have (as well as where you live) to build the palette of style, colour and life you wish for.

This can take anything from a week to years, so allow plenty of time to refine your taste, and if you find yourself butting heads with your partner, husband, wife or bestie (I hate to use the word compromise), find that happy medium.

Don't feel constrained by movements or particular styles; just gather what you love (the colours, the textures, the art) and make it yours. Own your style and you'll build a confident personal space that feels like home and is that enclave of peace we all dream of. continue on page 21

If it looks right on paper, it will generally look decent in real life, so don't be afraid to play around with your floor plan to see what works best.

Kick off with a brief Knowing a style or trend you want to achieve is one thing, but pulling it off is something quite different.

It's best to create a brief (one for each space) or a set of needs and wants from each room.

Start at the top

This will inevitably change with time – think bachelor pad versus young family – so embrace the opportunity to reinvent yourself.

A soft white ceiling with plenty of reflected light can build an ethereal tone while a moody grey hue overhead with muted warm light can build cosiness and familiarity. Colour and light have so much bearing in a space, they set the tone for what's to come in a home.

List what you need and want from a space and start to tick off solutions.

Take your dining room, for example. What do you NEED from it? Table for six, easy-to-clean floors and chairs, plenty of task lighting and a place to store all the bills. What do you WANT from a dining space?

Softness, pops of colour, plenty of greenery, natural light, and cohesion with the kitchen space.

It can't all be done at the click of a button though and, generally, the best way to know what you want from a space is to live in it for a least a few months.

Get to know the nuances of a room, the way it feels through the seasons and the way the light changes in there throughout the day. Knowing the space will help you to figure out what you want from it and that, in turn, will create a clear brief for you to get started with.

If designed right, ceilings and lighting can really make a space.

A space should (we can't always hit the mark though) have three distinct types of lighting: task, accent and general. It's these three (two if we're stingy) that you want to layer so you can build character and personality in a space.

A kitchen, for instance, might have task lighting directly over a benchtop, a killer (though not wholly practical) pendant light over the table for a touch of accent lighting, and a general wash of downlights to gently illuminate the entire space.

Having only one type of lighting would be impractical on its lonesome, which is why a well-chosen collective can really shine.

Try using plenty of task lighting (with dimmers if possible) where you can.

That means lamps, wall lights, spotlights, anything with specific direction and for intentional use.

On top of this, cut down the number of downlights you once might have gone for, and remember that Mother Nature is queen bee when it comes to general lighting. continue on page 22

Go with the flow

Take a rug (or two) home and see what works best.

Tuck a third of the rug under a bed or sofa to let those elements overlap, and keep your rug clear of any cabinetry.

Furniture selection is a huge element in decoration. It may be the biggest purchase inside the home and usually dictates how a room is oriented or set out.

Keep this in mind when choosing your pieces as you want to create flow and movement for the people who use the space.

Keep corridors within rooms for people to use.

Furthermore, don't crowd your room with too many big pieces. Give yourself and your furniture room to breathe and you're guaranteed a more inviting space.

Art is king A room without some kind of art is an empty space, but it doesn't have to cost you a generation of inheritance. A simple print or two, or an oversized canvas that delivers some colour, can bring 'smile' to an otherwise dull room.

Soften up Don't underestimate the effect of softness in a space. We all love natural timber floors, big glass windows and handcrafted furniture, but that hard aesthetic needs to be balanced out.

Cushions and throws can soften a space like nothing else, but remember that greenery and natural tones also have the power to create soft vibes within a space.

Spend time choosing your cushions (looking for relationships in colour, pattern or texture) to really pull it altogether.

A rug can work a treat

I always invest in good framing and use appropriate scale in a room. An oversized print on a big wall tends to sit well, as does a collection of smaller pieces in a more modest space.

Declutter Nothing kills a space like clutter. We have enough going on in our lives without having to deal with 18 candles in a lounge room or your vast collection of snow globes from when you identified as a world citizen. Kill the clutter and take back your life.

Use rules when you get stuck Designers and decorators generally use formulas, or rules, to create cohesion. We're not all gifted artists, so there is some method to our madness.

The Dude in The Big Lebowski was right all along – a rug does have the power to make or break a space.

The rules are principles we apply to the elements inside a home, and they govern balance, gradation, contrast, repetition, harmony and unity.

That being said, it's blinkin' near impossible to guess what a rug will look like in your home. I love to try before I buy and always oversize a rug.

Applying them to the elements in your home (such as colour, texture, tone and size) will give the space a sense of cohesion and help you to create rooms worthy of any magazine cover.

EASY! 1 tablespoon olive oil 250g lean ground beef 250g Italian sausage, casing removed 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium sweet onion, diced 2 cans crushed tomatoes 1 can petite diced tomatoes 6 cups beef stock 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon dried basil Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1 ½ cups uncooked campanelle pasta ½ cup whole milk ricotta cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves

Lasagne Soup YIELD: 6-8 SERVINGS PREP TIME: 20 MINUTES COOK TIME: 8 HOURS 40 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 9 HOURS

1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add ground beef and sausage, and cook until browned, about 5-8 minutes, making sure to crumble the beef and sausage as it cooks; drain excess fat.

2. Stir in garlic and onion. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions have become translucent, about 2-3 minutes.

3. Place ground beef mixture into a 6-qt slow cooker. Stir in crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, beef stock, Italian seasoning and basil; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

4. Cover and cook on low heat for 7-8 hours or high heat for 5-6 hours. Uncover and stir in pasta; cover and cook on high heat for an additional 30 minutes, or until tender; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

6. Serve immediately, garnished with chives, if desired.

Upgrading Your Garden

While you may think that there’s nothing to do in the garden in winter, there is actually a lot you can do now so that it looks gorgeous in Spring.

This is a good time to improve the soil for planting.

Improve the soil Start by digging in organic matter like compost, bone meal and coco peat into the top 20 – 30cm. This increases water retention, introduces beneficial bacteria and provides nutrients.

Add height To your flat uninteresting garden beds While beds are relatively empty, it’s easy to assess them and see which ones could do with a bit more structure.

Obelisks and tripods are an excellent way to make beds look more interesting and give them some height. Either place them in the centre of a square bed or in a row along the length of a border.

Make sure that they are in proportion and are not too close together. If decorative, like those in wrought iron, you can leave them bare. But if they’re plain timber tripods, train climbing roses or a flowering creeper over them to add colour. continue on page 32

Sort out shady areas There are a number of ways to improve shady areas under trees where nothing will grows. However, to maintain the health of the trees, make sure that the surface you use is permeable so rainwater can soak through. In this garden, mondo grass between large pavers and pebbles around a water feature, creates a permeable surface.

Brighten up the shady areas with golden coloured grasses and variegated leaf plants.

This adds visual texture and definition.

A good choice is Liriope silver ribbon, Choloryphytum variegatum and Hosta varieties (if you can get hold of them).

Plecranthus variegata is also an excellent shade plant which brightens up those dark areas and adds depth.

Plant ornamental grasses If you want to give your garden a more contemporary look introduce ornamental grasses. These are always very fashionable and their texture and form make an interesting contrast to the more regular shape of shrubs and perennials.

Use them in drifts rather than dotting them about, and look for ones that have attractive seed heads in autumn and winter. Some grasses that prove to do well in our climate are Acorus Gramineus (pictured above), Carex evergold, Carex frosty curls and Liriope varieties.

Edge your garden beds Finish off your garden beds with permanent edging. There’s quite a selection to choose from – bricks, concrete, cobbles, terracotta and timber.

Why not do something totally funky and use old wine bottles, terracotta pots or even those old plates from grandma.

Choose one that suits the style of your garden. Thin metal edging works extremely well in modern gardens where you want a very clean, minimalist look.

Edging also makes the lawn look neat and saves you having to slice off grass runners that constantly invade flower beds.

Garden pathways The good, the bad and the beautiful Pathways need renewing every couple of years. If you have stepping stones with gravel or pebbles, take them out, clean it and replace it again. You’ll probably need to top them up as well.

Wooden sleepers, like all wood, eventually rot and need replacing.

Give your creative side a go and try something new, like designing images with different coloured pebbles in cement.
