Black Eagle Project Roodekrans Written by Johann Van Den Berg - Black Eagle Project Roodekrans  Photos taken with a trap camera from a long distance

Update on offspring With the help of modern technology, we were able to confirm that two eggs were laid, and that the normal Cain and Abel scenario took place. Makatsa and Mahlori are doing a great job in raising their youngster, and we are starting to see it moving around the nest, and the eaglet feathers are starting to show. We only have a little over a month to wait, and hopefully we will be able to witness yet another juvenile take that “leap of faith”. We are certain the first landing will not be perfect, but as in the past, the juvenile will soon master perfect flight and great landings. Featherbrooke News  08 2021 2

Featherbrooke Estate Strikes Gold South African Landscape Institute Award By Leon Meintjies – Featherbrooke Parks Director

The South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) Promotes professionalism and quality in landscaping. Recently, Featherbrooke Estate, together with our gardening subcontractor, FSG, proudly received the prestigious annual accolade of a Gold Award of Excellence for landscape and turf maintenance. The judging was preceded by a site visit from the SALI judges where all aspects of the relevant landscaped areas were inspected according to specific criteria. These include the use of indigenous planting, general maintenance (weed removal, garden and lawn edges, etc.) as well as endeavours to promote a waterwise landscape. A series of professional photographs depicting relevant areas, was submitted along with a write-up of the processes we follow to ensure efficient landscape maintenance of our picturesque parklands. continue on page 6 Featherbrooke News  08 2021 5

The Perfect Storm Social Struggles in Girls Ref: https://raisingteenstoday.com

When you ask women to recall their preteen and teen social lives, a consistent pattern emerges. There are stories of enduring friendships, but also uncomfortable and often painful social memories. Women share stories of exclusion, drama, loneliness, the desire to fit in, and friendships lost. continue on page 13

Featherbrooke News  08 2021 12

The Perfect Storm Social Struggles in Girls Continued from page 12 The words harsh and change are commonly used to describe this phase. And this rings true for adolescent girls today. While friendship changes and struggles occur throughout life, they intensify and are especially uncomfortable during the preteen and teen years. So what’s going on? What is it about adolescence that intensifies social changes and struggles, especially for girls? The answer lies in a confluence of events that create the perfect storm.

The Perfect Storm When we explore everything going on during this phase, it’s no surprise that girls’ social worlds sometimes feel like a steady rain shower with occasional flashes of thunder. Tweens learn how to navigate complex social groups alongside the physical, emotional, and intellectual changes that go along with puberty. And all of this happens as peer acceptance grows in importance and selfconfidence levels dip.

So what’s going on?

Confidence Drops

What is it about adolescence that intensifies social changes and struggles, especially for girls? The answer lies in a confluence of events that create the perfect storm...

Puberty is a turbulent time for confidence in both genders, but girls experience a much more significant, dramatic drop. Much of this drop is due to newly formed habits such as overthinking, peoplepleasing, and perfectionism. This lack of confidence ripples through girls’ relationships and increases the likelihood of selfdoubt, social anxiety, and risk avoidance.

Increased Reliance on Friends While confidence is dipping, young girls are also in the midst of the developmental phase that shifts their reliance on family to a reliance on peers. During this period, friendships begin to replace family as tweens’ primary source of identity and support. Social conformity becomes a typical response to the urgent need to fit in and be accepted into a new replacement “family.” This process of finding a new “tribe”, is nothing less than a strategy for survival. Cliques and social drama are often anxiety-fuelled behaviours to manage the transition from family as the primary social support to finding a sense of belonging in peers.

Seeking Identity As kids look more to peers to find support and belonging, they need to figure out where they fit in the sea of students, groups, and activities. During adolescence, kids begin to explore their social world, including who their friends are, what they wear, and what activities they do. They start to question, experiment with, and shape their identity. In early elementary school, friendships often form based on proximity, such as being in the same class or the same neighbourhood. Starting in late elementary school and middle continue on page 14

Featherbrooke News  08 2021 13

The Perfect Storm Social Struggles in Girls Continued from page 13 school, friendships begin to form based on shared interests and deeper feelings of acceptance. The pursuit of identity ripples into friendships and prompts changes. “At a time when identity is so very insecure, kids need everything in their lives – shoes, friends, Instagram posts- to project the image of self they’re working so hard to construct. Any deviation is far too dangerous to tolerate.

Physiological Changes Bubbling beneath the surface of all of this, the physiological changes that occur in adolescence amplify the intensity of teens’ emotions and experiences. The limbic system, or the emotional brain, ramps up quickly in puberty, while the executive functioning part of the brain responsible for self-regulation and self-control lags. During adolescence, we feel our feelings most deeply, which creates enduring memories. The hormones released in puberty affect our “sensitivity thresholds,” how reactive we are to things that happen to us and what we feel.” To say a lot is going on developmentally with young girls during adolescence is an understatement. It is a period of tremendous change and growth. Decreasing confidence, finding an identity, and identifying a new tribe combined with physiological changes make this a tricky time for many girls and their parents. An enduring pandemic layered on top adds a new level of change to this already complex phase.

By listening deeply and empathizing, parents can help their daughters navigate their emotions and complex social situations...

So what can parents do? How can they help their girls weather the inevitable storms? By listening deeply and empathizing, parents can help their daughters navigate their emotions and complex social situations. Active listening, without judgment, gives girls time and space to process their feelings and experiences aloud, increasing self-awareness, improving clarity, and reducing anxiety. Parents can help their daughters avoid assumptions and gently broaden their perspectives. There is usually more to situations that they may not be considering. If a girl’s social struggles are ongoing and impacting her well-being, parents should consider reaching out to her teacher, school counsellor, or another professional for additional support. There is no way to avoid discomfort during this phase or any phase of life, but parents play an essential role in helping their daughters keep their gaze on the lighthouse and offering ongoing support along their journey to shore.

Scavenger Hunt Ideas! Ref: https://teambuilding.com/

The things you need to prepare really depend on the kind of scavenger hunt you plan to have. In general, you will want to decorate your space as festively as possible in line with your theme so that you can include a wider variety of items in your list. Plus, the more decor you have in and around your space, the harder it’ll be for your players to find specific items.

What’s a Photo Scavenger Hunt?

For the most part, you will need:  Printed lists of specific items for your players to look for  Prepared spaces where players can produce certain items on the list  Cameras if you’re planning to use the photo scavenger hunt format

A photo scavenger hunt is a great way to limit your use of resources, especially if you’re planning to include a few items that aren’t easy to obtain or carry around. Instead of having your players retrieve and collect items around your space, they only need to take photos with their cameras.

How to Get Started? If you’re ready to start your scavenger hunt, you need to set the ground rules and make sure everyone is on the same page. Follow these simple steps to get started on your scavenger hunt.  Divide your guests into groups. For younger players, it might be best to have smaller groups of 3 to 4 members continue on page 17

Featherbrooke News  08 2021 16

Scavenger Hunt Ideas! Continued from page 16

 The entire team needs to be present when the collected items are presented! If any members are missing, then the team will have to wait for them to arrive before they can have their items counted and qualified.

each to make sure that each one is able to enjoy the game and participate in their team’s process. If you’re planning a Christmas scavenger hunt for adults, then bigger groups can be ideal.

 The first team to return to the collection station with complete and correct items will be declared the winner.

 Hand out the list of items that your players need to find. Make sure you discuss items that need to be collected as opposed to special entries that need to be created.  If you’re going with a photo scavenger hunt format, then make sure your players register their devices. This just prevents anyone from trying any tricks and cheats. Only photos that are taken with registered devices will be qualified as entries for the hunt.  Each team can have around 2 to 4 registered cameras.  For items that need to be recreated, teams are not allowed to take photos of creations completed by other teams. For instance, if you have an item that requires that teams take a photo with a snowman they built, other teams are not allowed to take their picture with a snowman created by other teams. This helps make sure that all players exert the same effort into completing their lists.  Instruct your players where they need to go once they complete their list of items. The first team to arrive at the collection station at the end of their hunt will stand the chance to be crowned the winner.

Featherbrooke News  08 2021 17

So, what should you include in your list? The best way to make a scavenger hunt more of a challenge would be to use riddles that your players can decode to figure out what they need to collect or take pictures of. continue on page 18

Scavenger Hunt Ideas! Continued from page 17

Adding Variety What’s fun about scavenger hunts is that they don’t always have to follow the same format. Lots of people have found clever ways to make scavenger hunts more fun and exciting, adding in other challenging aspects to make them more interesting for players. If you want to add a little variety to your game, consider trying these interesting tweaks.

2. Series Cast ie Friends The cast of this popular series is pretty easy to recreate from memory, so to add a touch of fun to your scavenger hunt, you can ask your players to recreate the cast. Recreate with all of your team members in the shot! One person to represent each character, and all the others to take the place of a couch or coffee table etc. Make sure that all members are in the shot. Bonus points for teams who go the extra mile with costumes!

Some would say that having your players collect or take pictures of items in your play area might be a little too easy. So it might add a bit of a challenge if they were to make the entries in their lists themselves. How exactly can you make that happen?

Consider these suggestions:

1. Do you wanna build a snowman?

3. Make Your Own Sugar Cookies.

For this scavenger hunt challenge, give your players instructions on a specific snowman design that they need to reconstruct themselves with creative materials. You can either provide them the items they need, or they can hunt around the area to find the pieces for their snowman.

Sugar cookies can be loads of fun to make, and the process can be fairly straightforward. So to leverage that fact, you can set out a sugar cookie making station where players attempt to recreate a cookie that’s already been decorated.

Here are some instruction that you can try to apply: Build a snowman at least 30 cm in height He must have: buttons for eyes, an ice cream cone for a nose, and two arms made of wood Dress him up so that he looks like he’s going to work Take a picture next to your snowman to prove his height!

Recreate the cookie set out in front of you with the tools and colors available. Make sure it’s as accurate as possible! You should have three decorated cookies to bring to the finish line to be declared the winner! continue on page 19

Featherbrooke News  08 2021 18

Scavenger Hunt Ideas! Continued from page 18

without making any mistakes, and if they were the first ones to return, then they’re crowned the winner. But if they made a few mistakes, then you have to wait for the next team to return.

A scavenger hunt can take around an hour or more to complete, depending on the extent of the hunt that you’ve prepared for your players.

But your focus really shouldn’t be on limiting their time, but on encouraging teams to complete the challenge as fast as possible.  Designate an area where your players will proceed once they collect all the items on the list.  If you’ve prepared a traditional scavenger hunt, they should be able to present all the items the collected throughout the game.  If you’ve prepared a photo scavenger hunt, then they should have completed the list by taking photos of all the items in the list. Inspect all of the items in the list and compare them with the items retrieved by your players. If they were able to collect everything

If the second team returns and all of their items are correct, then they are announced the winner despite not returning first. However, if they also made mistakes, then it comes down to the number of errors that the teams made. The winner will be the team or player with the fewest errors.

Easy scavenger hunt riddles Scavenger hunt clues are questions, riddles, puzzles, and hints that lead players to objects during scavenger hunts. For example, “if not for me, the birds would live in a hole in a tree” leads treasure hunters to a birdhouse. The purpose of these prompts is to make these games more challenging and fun. 1. If you go out of town, I don’t need a sitter, just someone to leave me food and change my litter. (Cat) continue on page 20

The Best Lentil Soup Ref: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lentils#benefits

Lentils are edible pulses or seeds that belong to the legume family. These mostly consist of two halves covered in a husk. Both the seeds are lens-shaped, which is probably why they are named Lens culinaris in Latin. They are also one of the oldest known sources of food, dating back more than 9,000 years. continue on page 23

Featherbrooke News  08 2021 22

The Best Lentil Soup Continued from page 22 Lentils can be consumed with or without the husk. Prior to the invention of milling machines, they were eaten with the husk. The husk contains the highest amount of dietary fibre. After the milling process was invented, the husk or skin was removed and the dietary fibre in lentils disappeared. The popular kinds of lentils include black lentils, red lentils, brown lentils, mung bean, yellow split peas, yellow lentils, macachiados lentils, French green lentils, black-eyed pea, kidney beans, soya beans, and many more varieties. Each country has its own group, which is more or less similar and provides the same benefits.

Lentils with a high protein content are considered an inexpensive source of protein. They are a rich source of essential amino acids like isoleucine and lysine. They are also a good source of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Lentils are consumed much more often in Asian countries, particularly India. India has the largest number of vegetarians and lentils can be a substitute for meat in supplying the required protein. One very good way to have lentils is after they have sprouted because they contain methionine and cysteine. These two amino acids are very significant in muscle-building and strengthening of our body. Methionine is an essential amino acid that is supplied through the food, and cysteine is a non-essential amino acid that can then be synthesised.

The Recipe Ref. https://cookieandkate.com/best-lentil-soup-recipe/

This lentil soup is made with mostly pantry ingredients but includes hearty greens and a squeeze of lemon for bright, fresh flavour. It’s seasoned with a few of my favourite spices and plenty of freshly ground black pepper.

Five reasons to love this recipe: 1. The recipe calls for seasonal vegetables and affordable pantry ingredients, but tastes gourmet. 2. This lentil soup has an amazing hearty texture that’s lightly creamy (yet there is no cream). The trick is to blend up a portion of the soup once the lentils are tender, and then pour it back into the pot. It’s like magic. 3. This nutritious, well-balanced soup counts as a meal if you enjoy a generous portion. Lentils are rich in protein, fiber, iron and folate. 4. Lentil soup packs well for lunch in a leak-proof container, and it tastes even better the next day. 5. This soup freezes and defrosts well. Make soup now and enjoy it later!

How to make the Best Lentil Soup Continued from page 23 This simple vegan lentil soup recipe comes together quickly with mostly pantry ingredients. Be sure to have your ingredients prepped and ready before you start cooking! Recipe yields four large bowls of soup, or six more modest servings.

Ingredients ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 medium yellow or white onion, chopped 2 carrots, peeled and chopped 4 garlic cloves, pressed or minced 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon curry powder ½ teaspoon dried thyme 1 tin diced tomatoes, lightly drained 1 cup brown or green lentils, picked over and rinsed 4 cups vegetable broth 2 cups water 1 teaspoon salt, more to taste Pinch of red pepper flakes Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1 cup chopped fresh collard greens or kale, tough ribs removed 1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice (½ to 1 medium lemon), to taste

Method 1. Warm the olive oil in a large Dutch oven or pot over medium heat. One-fourth cup olive oil may seem like a lot, but it adds a lovely richness and heartiness to this nutritious soup. 2. Once the oil is shimmering, add the chopped onion and carrot and cook, stirring often, until the onion has softened and is turning translucent, about 5 minutes. 3. Add the garlic, cumin, curry powder and thyme. Cook until fragrant while stirring constantly, about 30 seconds. Pour in the drained diced tomatoes and cook for a few more minutes, stirring often, in order to enhance their flavour. 4. Pour in the lentils, broth and the water. Add 1 teaspoon salt and a pinch of red pepper flakes. Season generously with freshly ground black pepper. Raise heat and bring the mixture to a boil, then partially cover the pot and reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the lentils are tender but still hold their shape. 5. Transfer 2 cups of the soup to a blender. Securely fasten the lid, protect your hand from steam with a tea towel placed over the lid, and purée the soup until smooth. Pour the puréed soup back into the pot. (Or, use an immersion blender to blend a portion of the soup.) 6. Add the chopped greens and cook for 5 more minutes, or until the greens have softened to your liking. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Taste and season with more salt, pepper and/ or lemon juice until the flavours really sing. For spicier soup, add another pinch or two of red pepper flakes. 7. Serve while hot. Leftovers will keep well for about 4 days in the refrigerator or can be frozen.

The Summer is a highly stressful time for all lawns, and it’s the things done during the Summer which will determine the overall health and appearance of our lawns and gardens. With a deeper root system, the roots of the turf are less likely to dry out and die on hot Summer days, or at times of drought or low water usage. The way this is done is to water the lawn less often, and more deeply. Aim to reduce watering frequencies to half of normal or even less, and when the lawn finally begins to start looking slightly wilted, it’s time to give the lawn an otherwise larger drink of water than what we may normally do. In this way, the lawns roots will continue to travel deeper into the soil profile.

Lawn Scarifying Watering a heavily thatched lawn will result in a lot of the water being applied then being left to sit in the thatch layer of the lawn, with the end result that less water reaches the soil to maintain the health of the lawn, and instead… simply evaporates away in the heat of the day. This problem is further compounded when the lawn is being watered at night, which provides a perfect breeding environment for lawn diseases. Lawns, and in particular Kikuyu and Bermuda should be dethatched (scarified) whenever is necessary.

Wetting Agents Wetting Agents are a wonderful invention for every lawn and garden owner around the world. As many soil types begin to dry out in the heat of Summer, they also tend to become more water repellent too. Meaning water will be more likely to run off the soil, and the soil will not hold onto the water for a very long period of time.(hydrophobic) Wetting Agents soak into the soil and coat the particles with a water attracting agent which breaks down any greasy coating on the surface of the soil particle. This allows soils to hold onto water for longer periods of time, as well as allowing dry soils to soak up much more water than would otherwise be the case.

Lawn Mowing The first change to lawn mowing should be with mowing heights, if the lawn is in excellent health and water is not an issue, then lawn mowing heights can safely be lowered, as this time of year continue on page 28

Summer Lawn Care Continued from page 27

is peak growing season and the lawn can easily cope and repair with a shorter leaf. The shorter the lawn the more frequent the cut. If the lawn is subject to heavy water restrictions and may experience drought-like conditions, then the lawn mowing height should be INCREASED. This will allow the lawn leaf and thatch layer to insulate the soil against heavy water loss from evaporation, and the end result will be greater lawn health – using less water, as the Summer progresses. Lastly, mow the lawn regularly during the Summer. Healthy, properly watered lawns will benefit from less weeds and more green leaf with less invasion of the grass into surrounding garden beds. Regular mowing will also ensure the lawn is not scalped by removing too much green leaf in a single mowing, as this can easily kill sections of lawn which are under the stress of Summer heat.

Emergency measures If you’ve found yourself with a string of very hot days and the lawn looks to be under extreme stress and at risk of possibly dying, then the very best thing to do is to give the lawn a very deep watering the next morning. Also ensure the lawn receives and application of Wetting Agents at the next available opportunity, which will allow for the best use and distribution of water in the soil.

Lawn Care on The Hottest Summer Days The hottest days of Summer are the most stressful of all for any lawn variety. On these days it’s important not to put the lawn under any further stress whatsoever, otherwise the results can become damaging to the lawn for a long time to come.

Weed Sprays All chemical treatments should be completely avoided unless they are being applied by a licensed and trained professional. These include weed sprays, insecticides and fungicides.

Fertilising As a rule of thumb, all fertilising should also be avoided on the hottest days, as the results can be devastating to the lawn if the fertiliser is not watered into the grass thoroughly and completely, and done immediately after application.
