Ed's Note While Easter is of course only next month, it falls right at the beginning of April, and so we’ve used the March issue to help you get your eggs in a row before the great feast of hollow moulded chocolate is upon us.

Claudia Holgate has submitted the first chapter of her stint around the world in 80 days (Corona Virus Version) as she unfolds her enviable adventures of last year. I haven’t read the full epistle yet, but I can’t be too far wrong to expect that some chapters in it will be sprinkled with some pesky red tape and quarantine.

I always love reading of Claudia’s awe-inspiring escapades, and I’m absolutely certain you will too.

Following the travel theme, this month features the first of a 2 part ‘Around the World’ Easter recipe series which I have thoroughly enjoyed pulling together.

Fascinating how Easter holds different traditions in different countries. Some Easter crafts for every age with versatile Tjoko paint, more on the miracle plant in oil form, tips for looking after your orchids as well as indigenous gardening from Bernadette.

Also, you get to meet the newly appointed Board and put names to faces from page 5. We hope this adds value.

Meet the Directors In their own words ...

Leon Meintjes (Above far left) My wife of 41 years and I have enjoyed living in Featherbrooke estate for the past 5 years. Our 2 children are now adults.

I am semi-retired from a 30 + year long career in International Finance, Project Finance and Banking. And these days, I keep myself busy with golf, flying, chess, yachting and travel.

I am honoured to assist with the management of our lovely financially sound Estate.

To my surprise the parks portfolio was allocated to me and I am eager to assist a very competent team to make our gardens the best.

Challenging our service provider to do the best they can is our commitment, and we are glad that we are now entering into country wide competitions to measure ourselves against other estates and to escalate the value of our properties.

Most important is also that we remain indigenous and that we protect the environment we live in at all costs.

Corne Lemmer I have lived in the estate since 2011 with my wife and 2 daughters. I have been working in various Finance related roles in the mining industry since 2003 and am qualified as a Chartered Global Management accountant and Professional Accountant. I love the outdoors and try to get out as much as permitted.

Udo Sachse I am of German descent, brought up in South Africa. I have two sons, one is in the cycling trade, the other protects rhinos. My two grandchildren are 10 and 7 years old.

Chose to study Mining at Wits and then worked in the mining industry for 50 years, from drilling and shoveling to senior management and board positions.

Sportswise, I skydived for about 20 years, represented SA at a number of world championships and was awarded the State Presidents Sports award for winning the 4-way completion in France in 1978. I have jumped off the Blaauwkrans Bridge – the first BASE jump in Africa. Now, I just travel and take pictures.

I was attracted to the estate by the concept of a “green eco estate” and the proximity to the Bot gardens.

The maintenance of the high standard of security, tranquility and the value of our investment in the long term (50 years +) by the strict application of the rules and ETHOS of the estate.

I built in Featherbrooke in 2003 and have been ecstatic ever since, mostly because I live here. I don’t have a regular life, so am not married and don’t have kids (Please don’t judge). I do, however, have a plush African wild dog pup that has travelled to over 100 countries with me. I am an eclectic character, although some may say eccentric, and have many different skills, how I accumulated them, I am still not sure. For most of the year I am sailing the seven seas, showing people the most incredible wonders of the world. In fact, my life is like being on the set of a National Geographic documentary, watching polar bears fight each other over a carcass to having a humpback whale rubbing itself on my zodiac (rubber boat), or having a penguin chick fall asleep on my leg. This life is one of being an expedition leader and guide in remote areas, organizing the operations, including helicopter and mini-submarine operations. If I am not leading expeditions, I am guiding them and lecturing in geology, glaciology, ornithology and weather and climate.

My other life when I am at home is working as a critical care paramedic and instructor in Advanced Cardiac, Paediatric, Trauma and Wilderness life support, teaching mainly doctors and nurses these critical skills.

I used to compete internationally in fencing and qualified for the Olympics in 1996. I am a semi-professional photographer, a fanatical birder, and a Past President of the Johannesburg chapter of Soroptimist International (A professional women’s service organization, like Rotary).

My garden in safe Featherbrooke is like an aviary, except it isn’t caged, what’s more, we have access to the most wonderful area in Johannesburg. And I love the people I have met, residents who have become like parents to me and friends I can call on, day or night. This is unique in our modern world.

I envisage my role as communications director bringing humanity to the dealings of the board. To build a community, with a foundation of accountability and transparency, within Featherbrooke and with external stakeholders.

Tim Clark What I thought to be a massive leap of faith into a terrified unknown at the end of 2012, turned out to be the perfect starting point in Featherbrooke for me and my young family.

Spending time with my beautiful wife Ramona and my daughters Katie and Tayla is important to me. Activities that have aspects of either sport, socializing and travelling are tops on my list along with getting back to nature and disappearing to the bush whenever I can.

Starting, running and assisting SMME businesses has been a passion that has given me the opportunity to see and do loads of cool stuff. I set my own schedule and by prioritizing my time spent on what I love, have enjoyed some incredible career opportunities.

I’ve been connected to Featherbrooke since my parents built and moved in nearly 20 years ago. After living overseas in a few countries for a number of years, there was a pull to return to Featherbrooke and invest in my own property.

While I love working in theatre with neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons during the week, my happy place is where I’m hanging out with my family training, cycling, hiking, cooking, creating, swimming and exploring. After a hard day of fun and activity, we fight for a space to nestle on the oversized patio couch to devour a good book.

I have an unquenched desire to create and develop a spirit of community within Featherbrooke Estate through events and am always encouraged by the generosity so easily stirred up for good causes.

Absolutely privileged that Featherbrooke offers the opportunity to raise children in an environment similar to what we knew as kids growing up in a suburb; where walking and cycling around or popping into friends and family happens with absolute peace of mind.

Henk de Bruyn Happily married for 10 years to my wonderful and supporting wife, Rita. We have 3 beautiful children and enjoy spending our time outdoors, creating adventures and doing life together.

At my company 153Wealth, we protect and create wealth!

I love being outdoors where I can go hunting and fishing.

I appreciate the lifestyle and freedom Featherbrooke provides for my family.

Having moved to the estate 5 years ago with my wife and 2 kids, we have enjoyed living in Featherbrooke and continuously do so. Apart from freedom and security, I have fresh appreciation every time I drive into our lush green haven with open spaces and blue skies after spending a day in the busy corporate life. Residents roaming the walkways, healthy-looking dogs and that intangible sense of community that most of us long to be part of. While this scene isn’t necessarily the reality in the typical South African neighbourhoods, it is what many estates endeavour to create and offer. In short, and amongst others, that is why I serve the FHA board to ensure my family and all Featherbrooke families continue to fully enjoy all the wonderful elements of their investment in our beautiful estate.

Marius van der Westhuizen I am a family man and love spending all my free time with my wife and two daughters.

Solo road/trail running and hiking with the girls are some of my favourite things to do.

I have two lives; on the boring side, I am a qualified accountant. (almost fell asleep typing this); and my wild-fun-colourful side a Tech entrepreneur.

A normal week consists of 7 days. A great week consist of 7 BRAAI days.

I love the safety, tranquility, freedom and peaceful living Featherbrooke offers especially with the Botanical gardens on our doorstep.

My vision for the future of the Estate? L Not rolling my eyes when reading the Featherbrooke Facebook comments and building on the successes from the past and maintaining a high standard for the future.

My professional experiences have always seen me take a vision and make it a reality through sound strategy development. I intuitively see the threads of opportunity that wind through an organization, bring them together into a coherent whole, and help others extend their thinking to drive material business advantage. I hope to apply the same principles while serving residents and fellow directors by protecting/delivering on the fiduciary relationship and the responsibilities that the board has to its members; that board's duties are performed with the care and responsibility that an ordinary prudent person would exercise under similar circumstances.

On the professional side, I have over 20 years of experience in the telecommunication and broadcast industry with expertise across local and international operations in both technical and leadership roles.

I love basketball, relaxing and reading technology development and something not everyone knows about me is that I visited 30 countries in 5 years.

Chocolate Bunny Shake Continued from page 11 The best part about these chocolate Easter bunny shakes is that if you use the bunnies wrapped in foil, you can walk around with them without the chocolate melting anywhere. Start with a foil wrapped HOLLOW chocolate bunny.

Step 1 Tear off a bit of the foil around the ears.

Step 2 Cut the tip off the ear until you have enough space to add a funnel and straw.

Prep all your bunnies ahead of time the same way. Eat ALL the cut off chocolate!

Step 3 Next, make your shakes! You can go super simple with a vanilla shake (which is what we did) or get fancy with Easter candy mix ins. Just make sure if you do use chunks of candy that they get ground up enough to go through whatever size straw you have.

Carefully pour your shake into your bunny cup with a funnel.

Gently tapping the bunny/funnel to work the shake down.

The smaller bunnies don’t hold a lot of shake, but that’s ok because if you’re going to eat the bunny after, you don’t need a ton of shake anyway.

Step 4 Add some whipped cream and a straw.

Repeat for any other shakes you need to make.

Step 5 A cherry (or speckled egg) on top is always a fun touch too.

For Christians around the world, the Holy Week and Easter are a time to celebrate Jesus Christ's return to Jerusalem, his crucifixion and his resurrection.

In some countries, that can mean lighting candles, attending ceremonies and watching solemn processions go by. In others, it can be a chance to dance, make music and eat special foods.

1. Armenian Easter Bread.

A sweet roll traditionally served as a part of dessert at most Armenian holiday celebrations. It’s also perfect for breakfast or snack any day of the week.

Note that prep time is broken down as follows: Day 1: 25 mins prep, 8 hours rising overnight / Day 2: 60 mins prep, 60 mins rising.

Ingredients 2 packets dry yeast 1/3 cup warm water 2 cups salted butter 3 cups milk (I used whole) 2.2kg bag Flour 1 tbsp mahleb (ground dried cherry seeds - optional) 3 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 cups sugar 8 extra large eggs

For the tops: 1-2 eggs for egg wash about 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

1. In a small bowl, combine yeast and water and reserve. The yeast should start to bubble up. If it doesn't bubble, the yeast isn't good, and should be discarded.

2. In a saucepan on the stove, melt butter.

3. Once butter is melted, turn off heat and add milk to the melted butter, and set aside.

4. While butter is melting, in another very large bowl (I used a big lobster pot) combine flour, salt, and mahleb if using, and set aside.

5. In a large bowl, whisk sugar and eggs together, and set aside.

6. Add the butter/milk mixture, egg/sugar mixture, and yeast/ water mixture with the flour in the very large bowl.

7. Knead ingredients until completely combined, about 5-10 minutes. Wrap the bowl with plastic wrap (wrap should completely touch your dough to prevent a skin from forming as it rises). Set aside in a warm place for 4 hours to overnight (I recommend overnight). The dough should double in size.

8. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down once and let it sit covered in a warm spot for an additional 30 minutes.

9. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 190° C. 10. Take a small handful of dough, and roll it out into a log about 1/2 inch (13mm) thick. You can flour the surface or your hands to help if dough is sticky.

11. Tie the dough into a knot, and place it on a cookie sheet.

Repeat with all the dough; depending on how big your choregs are, you will need to do this in batches, and need 5-6 cookie sheets. Leave at least 25 - 50mm between choregs.

Let choreg sit on cookie sheet for 30 minutes.

12. Beat 1-2 eggs with a splash of water or milk for the egg wash.

Brush tops and sides of choreg with egg wash, and then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 20-25 minutes, rotating once, or until tops just turn brown.

13. Remove pan from oven. Carefully slide the parchment paper off the baking sheet, and cool choregs on parchment.

Once completely cooled, store in airtight storage bags or containers. They should keep for about 1 week at room temperature, or can be frozen for 3-4 months.

Cooking tip: Cut enough parchment paper for all batches of choreg. After the first two baking sheets go in the oven, continue forming choregs and placing them on the parchment. This will allow them time to rest and rise while the other batch is cooking. When the other batch comes out of the oven, remove the choregs to a baking rack, and place the next parchment (carefully) on the baking sheet. continue on page 16 Featherbrooke News  03 2021 15

Italian Easter Pie Ingredients 3/4 cup powdered sugar, plus extra for garnish 3 large eggs 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon orange zest 1 (425g) container whole milk ricotta cheese 1/2 cup cooked short-grained rice 1/3 cup toasted pine nuts 6 sheets fresh phyllo sheets or frozen, thawed 3/4 stick (85g) unsalted butter, melted

1. Blend 3/4 cup of powdered sugar, eggs, vanilla, orange zest and ricotta in a food processor until smooth.

Stir in the rice and pine nuts. Set the ricotta mixture aside.

2. Preheat the oven to 190° C. 3. Lightly butter a 228mm glass pie dish.

Lay 1 phyllo sheet over the bottom and up the sides of the dish, allowing the phyllo to hang over the sides. Brush the phyllo with the melted butter. Top with a second sheet of phyllo dough, laying it in the opposite direction as the first phyllo sheet. Continue layering the remaining sheets of phyllo sheets, alternating after each layer and buttering each sheet. Spoon the ricotta mixture into the dish. Fold the overhanging phyllo dough over the top of the filling to enclose it completely. Brush completely with melted butter.

4. Bake the pie until the phyllo is golden brown and the filling is set, about 35 minutes. Transfer the pan to a rack and cool completely. Sift powdered sugar over the pie and serve. continue on page 17

Instructions 1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

2. In another bowl, rub the orange zest with the sugar using your fingers. Then beat the sugar mixture on low speed for about a minute.

3. Add the butter to the sugar and beat on medium speed for 10 minutes, scraping the sides of the bowl when necessary. The mixture should be light and fluffy.

4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

5. Add the milk, vanilla, cognac, and orange juice and beat until well combined.

6. Gradually add the flour mixture, 1 cup at a time. Start beating on low speed with a hand mixer and then use a rubber spatula until the flour is just combined. At this point, if the dough is too wet or sticky, add more flour, a tablespoon at a time. The dough should be pliable and soft – not sticky. Don’t overmix the dough because it will make the cookies hard.

7. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and allow it to rest for about half an hour.

8. Preheat the oven to 175 °C .

9. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

10. Weigh each piece of dough (about 35 g) before shaping to ensure all the cookies are the same size and bake evenly.

11. Make different shapes (see notes & photos in the post) and place them on the baking sheets. Make sure they are at least 2 inches (50mm) apart.

Make the egg wash

3. Greek Easter Cookies.

Koulourakia are traditional Greek cookies that are popular during Easter! They are buttery and crunchy, with hints of vanilla, orange juice, and freshly grated orange zest in every bite!

Ingredients 6 cups / 800 g / all-purpose flour (you may need 1-2 tablespoons extra) 2 teaspoons baking powder a pinch of salt ½ tablespoon orange zest (optional) 1 cup / 200 g sugar 1 cup + 5 tablespoons / 300 g unsalted butter at room temperature 2 eggs at room temperature ½ cup milk at room temperature 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 tablespoons cognac (optional) ¼ cup / 60 ml orange juice at room temperature a few whole cloves (1 for each bunny cookie)

For the egg wash 1 egg yolk 1 teaspoon water

1. In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk with the water. Brush the tops of the cookies with the egg wash using a pastry brush.

2. Bake the cookies for about 20-30 minutes or until light golden brown.

3. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Store the cookies in an airtight container for up to 2 ½ weeks.

5. Enjoy!

Notes:  I highly suggest you weigh the ingredients using a digital scale before you begin to get consistent results.  For fluffy and crunchy cookies that won’t crumble apart, you really need to beat the butter and the sugar for at least 10 minutes  Only use as much flour as needed for the dough to come together. There are a few factors that can affect how wet the dough is such as the size of the eggs you use. Therefore, you might need more flour to make the dough pliable so it doesn’t stick to your hands. If more flour is needed, add it a tablespoon at a time.  Do not overmix the dough because it can make the cookies hard.  The dough needs to rest for about 20-30 minutes. This will make it easier to shape the cookies.  Each oven is different and baking times may vary. For my oven, I bake the cookies one tray at a time, so I can keep an eye on them.  Don’t overbake the cookies. CBD Oil: The Potential Benefits of Cannabidiol Cannabidiol, or CBD oil, is a non-psychoactive phytonutrient from the cannabis plant. Though controversial, CBD is fast gaining recognition in the medical community for a wide array of benefits backed by research.

Even though CBD oil is from the cannabis plant, it is not psychoactive and doesn’t create a “high”—an effect caused rather by THC (9-tetrahydrocannabinol), another cannabinoid.

At this juncture we must dispel myths about all THC making you high. This is not case as it is dose dependent.

Cannabinoids: The Active Miracle Plant Chemical Cannabinoids are active chemicals in Cannabis that cause medicinal effects throughout the body, including the central nervous system and the immune system. In some instances, these effects can be likened to being in the zone for a golfer or the runner’s high. This happens when you’ve experienced the effects of activating your endocannabinoid system.

Cannabinoids are made in small amounts in the human body. Every cell in the body has receptors for cannabinoids, and they modulate expression of the genes involved with homeostasis (healthy balance) and metabolism (turning food into energy). In turn, this impacts inflammation, immune function, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, memory, and brain function and development.

The modern diet is lacking in cannabinoids; the result is that most people are deficient, a condition known as “endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome.”

The Permanente journal provide results of a study specifically related to anxiety and sleep using on CBD oil.

Results demonstrated a more sustained response to anxiety than for sleep over time. Patient records displayed a larger decrease in anxiety scores than in sleep scores. The sleep scores demonstrated mild improvement. The anxiety scores decreased within the first month and then remained decreased during the study duration.

Potential Benefits of Cannabinoids and CBD Oil Products As with many complementary therapies, there is a wealth of emerging research showing the potential beneficial effects of cannabinoids in a wide range of conditions. Much of this research is early stage, but results are promising.

• Cancer:

Cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth, while protecting normal cells, and improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

• Cigarette and drug withdrawals:

A promising study published in Addictive Behaviours found that smokers using a CBD inhaler smoked 40 percent fewer cigarettes than those on placebo and were better able to control their nicotine cravings. Another study found that CBD helped people with substance abuse disorders in part by reducing symptoms such as anxiety, mood symptoms, insomnia and pain.

• Epilepsy and neurological disorders:

CBD products offer new hope for patients with epilepsy. A 2017 study found that CBD decreased the frequency of seizures, but increased sleepiness and increased liver enzymes. Other studies have found the risks to be minimal in comparison to anti-epileptic drugs.

• Anxiety:

A study in Neurotherapeutics showed that preclinical evidence conclusively demonstrates CBD’s efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviours relevant to multiple disorders, including anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress, social anxiety and obsessive– compulsive disorder, with minimal sedative effects, and an excellent safety profile.

• Diabetes:

A 2016 study found that CBD oil reduced inflammation in Type 1 diabetes while another study concluded CBD “may represent a new therapeutic agent for glycemic control in subjects with type 2 diabetes.

• Acne:

Research shows that CBD oil products have numerous skin benefits and a therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne.

• Pain relief:

The role of cannabinoids in pain management, has been studied in a variety of conditions including: Arthritis, cancer, chronic pain syndromes, MS, muscle pain, and spinal cord injuries.

Our voyage started in New Zealand on 16 February 2020.

Corona virus was but a small outbreak of a disease affecting China and had been recorded in Hong Kong, but had not spread much further. As a precaution, guests from China were not allowed. The journey to assemble at our departure point was arduous, flying to Sydney, then Christchurch and then down to the Southern city of Invercargill, where we boarded our sea home for the next month. The MV Ortelius is an Ice strengthened passenger vessel with 94 passengers, 11 expedition staff and 3 helicopters. As Assistant Expedition Leader on this voyage, all helicopter operations were my department, as well as supporting the Expedition Leader (EL) with the rest of the logistics. This is undoubtably one of the most challenging expeditions to run due to its remote nature, wild weather and enthusiastic expectations of the passengers. MV Ortelius was the only ship to attempt this voyage during 2020, once from South America to New Zealand and the second voyage (this one in the reverse direction).

Turning into the wind to gain height and then turning with the wind and flying down to the ocean surface, reaching speeds of 60km, where they glide until they want to gain height again and turn back into the wind. They flew for hours behind us, never needing to flap their wings, provided there is wind. Whenever I see albatrosses gliding behind the ship, I think of Robert Cushman Murphy’s quote, “I now belong to a higher cult of mortals for I have seen the albatross”. Indeed, my first experience of albatrosses following the ship is etched in my mind and I never tire of watching them, trance-like, as if watching a fire blaze.

We left on time and headed out towards our first destination, a group of New-Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands in the Southern Ocean called Auckland and Enderby Islands. It would take us a day to get there with a significant distance to cover and day 1 hurtled us with gusty winds and lumpy seas.

Not entirely comfortable for a 90m ship but nevertheless allowing us amazing sightings of the kings of the skies, the Albatrosses. We had the Southern Royal Albatrosses

I knew without even taking a scout boat out, that a landing would not be possible. My EL, Rolf agreed, so we decided to re-position the ship and find an area with some protection from the Westerly winds, where we could do a zodiac cruise and potentially see some penguins from our little rubber boats. We found a spot and headed out on the boats to explore the Island from the water. It was a good decision, as we had some fantastic views of a young YellowEyed Penguin, before he disappeared into the heather. Then we came across a Light mantled Sooty Albatross chick, large enough to be left on its own in the nest while both parents forage at

We arrived at Enderby island early in the morning with the hopes of landing and possibly seeing the exceedingly rare Yellow eyed penguin (there are only about 4 000 individuals of this endangered penguin left in the world, all of them found in Southern New Zealand). I saw one porpoising towards the ship, as we approached the island.

Yes, penguins do porpoise as they leap out the water. Now, do Porpoises ever penguin? …This is a question I have yet to find the answer to, but I digress.

As we came into our anchorage, I studied the surf at our landing in Enderby through my binoculars. I had been here previously where I collected some hair-raising experiences while taking our guests to shore through the wild surf at the beach. The Island has little protection from the ocean, and

sea to satisfy his ever-growing demands. Eventually, we had to leave this untouched paradise and return to the ship and reposition to the Southern part of Auckland Island. We did not know exactly what we were going to do there as the weather wasn’t being kind to us. The wonderful thing about expeditions of this nature is that at any time we can drop the anchor and go exploring – which is exactly what we did.

We reached a protected part of Auckland Island late in the afternoon. None of us had been to this part of the island before and it is completely uninhabited, so we headed out to see what we could see. This part of the world is incredibly beautiful and rich in wildlife. lions swimming next to the boats, looking out of the water before zooming off in front of us. Flocks of gulls, not at all perturbed by our presence, followed us along the rocky coastline. I took my boatful of guests into a small inlet and as I rounded the corner, I saw a tunnel in the rocks that had been eaten out by wave action. It was large enough (if I ducked) to take the boat in for the purpose of seeing how far the tunnel went. Controlling the boat was challenging as the waves lifted us up and pushed us deeper into the cave. Eventually, we reached the end of the cave, it was as dark as you can imagine a cave to be, but we could see the light at the entrance, and some dim shadows around us. I turned the engine off, so everyone could sit silently amongst the lapping waves, and rhythmic dripping of the water around us allowing deep appreciation for this tucked-away secret hiding place few other human beings had ever been before.

We had arrived at a time when the Albatrosses were changing the guard of the nest. The adult that had been foraging would fly into the grasses, and I must admit that landing is not the albatross’s most graceful strong point – emergency crash landing comes to mind. The two adults would then have a bonding display, pointing their beaks in the sky, with their wings outstretched, calling with a high-pitched screech. Having been alerted via radio that it was safe to go outside once out of the current, we headed through the current that was pulling us and hitting the little boat from all sides. my guests for a long time to come. As the world around us started getting darker, we headed back to the ship to begin our transit to tomorrow’s destination, Campbell Island.

We arrived at Campbell Island in the afternoon and the weather had settled, which meant that bringing the boats in at the landing site wasn’t too difficult. It was raining intermittently, and the plan was to head up to the top of the Island on the boardwalk in the hopes of getting some views of nesting Southern Royal Albatrosses. The island has very thick vegetation with what is termed as mega-flora, plants with huge leaves, as well as the heather type of vegetation (very much like fynbos), and the muddy peaty soils would be difficult to traverse without a boardwalk. Campbell Island was the pilot project for rat eradication; incredibly successful allowing the Campbell Island pipit and the Campbell Island flightless teal (which they thought was extinct) to re-populate the island. By the time we reached the top of the island, a dense mist had come down and visibility was all but zero, a bit of patience would be required if we were to see any of the nesting albatrosses. Our patience was rewarded about half an hour later as the wind started to blow and the mist cleared up, giving us gorgeous views of the island dotted with nesting albatrosses across the hillside. It was time for me to descend the slippery wooden boardwalk to take over the management of the landing site, trying to keep our guests safe from enormous and rather aggressive Hooker Sea lion bulls that happened to wander towards us. While waiting at the landing for the next boat to arrive, I spotted two Silvereyes, similar to our white eyes, that were completely soaked and huddling next to each other, trying to keep warm. For me it was one of the most endearing memories I had of this trip to the New Zealand Sub-Antarctic islands.

In our next instalment, we will visit the Bellany islands, previously only visited before by 33 vessels, Borchgrevink’s hut and a rough, icy but beautiful McMurdo Sound, where we were so far South, we lost all connection with the outside world.

Here's what you need to know to do it right.

If you're used to growing houseplants in regular potting soil, growing orchids (which usually enjoy either bark or moss instead of soil) might sound like a tricky task. But like other houseplants, watering at the right time is key; too much or too little water, and your orchids won't thrive.

Rather than watering them on a schedule (every Tuesday, for example), pay attention to the potting medium you use. The way it looks and feels will give you the best clues about when it's time for more moisture. How to water Orchids grown in bark When watering orchids, the goal is to saturate the bark pieces, not the roots themselves. Always use room temperature water; not cold, not warm. Avoid letting water stay inside the places where leaves meet the stems of an orchid; this promotes rot. If some inadvertently splashes there, wipe it away with a soft cloth or blot with a paper towel.

The best way to water orchids potted in bark is to place the entire pot into a bowl that's at least as deep as the bark line.

Pour room temperature water over the bark so it fills the bowl to just below the lip of the pot and let the bark soak for 10 to 15 minutes. If you put water in the bowl first, you're likely to push the bark out of the pot when you sink it into the water.

Then, lift the pot out of the water, let all of the excess water drain out, and place the orchid back in bright, indirect light.

Clay pots make excellent vessels for orchid plants because the terra-cotta also absorbs moisture, offering the orchid a little more humidity and water when the bark dries out.

How to water Orchids grown in sphagnum moss Some orchids are grown in sphagnum moss. You can water these from the top, the way you water other plants, but you may find it easier to let it soak in a basin to give the moss enough time to rehydrate. Sphagnum moss holds on to moisture longer than bark, so keep in mind that it could feel dry on top but still be damp inside the pot. Before watering, poke your finger into the moss up to the first knuckle to make sure it's completely dry. Be careful not to overwater your orchids if they're growing in moss, especially if they're in a plastic or glass pot that retains water. Orchid roots need air to grow, and too much water displaces the air, leading to rotting roots. continue on page 32

Should you mist Orchids?

Misting by hand does not need to be part of your orchid care. The idea is to raise the humidity, but you can do this more efficiently by placing orchid pots on top of a layer of rocks that are sitting in water. You don't want the water constantly touching the bottom of the pot; you just want the evaporating water to humidify the plant.

You also can help your orchids by running a humidifier in the room where they are.

How often to water Orchids Watering orchids is more of an art than a science. How often to water depends on a number of factors, including how warm it is in your house, how much light the orchid gets, what type of orchid you have, and what type of potting medium the orchid is growing in.

A general rule of thumb is to water once a week for drought-tolerant types of orchids such as cattleyas, oncidiums, dendrobiums, and once every four or five days for others such as phalaenopsis, but always check the potting medium before you water.

All orchid mixes should be moistened thoroughly each time you water, then allowed to dry out before watering again.

Fynbos is one of only 6 floral kingdoms around the world, is the most biodiverse plant habitat in the world and the only one that is located entirely in one country. No wonder we all want them in our gardens…what’s not to want?

Although most of the Fynbos are endemic to the winter rainfall area of the Western and part of the Eastern Cape, some, particularly the Proteas, Pincushions and Leucospermums, also occur naturally in the summer rainfall areas, like here on the Highveld especially in the Roodekrans protected nature areas.

Keep in mind that most fynbos plants are relatively short-lived and will have to be replaced occasionally.

Position Plant in full sun, i.e. at least 6 hours of sun per day. Morning sun is preferable to the hot, afternoon sun. Plant in a position with very good air circulation.

Planting In situ Plant fynbos in August or September when all danger of frost has passed, but days are still cool.

Very important is well-drained, acidic soil that is well-aerated with no more that 30% clay in top and subsoil. Choose the position with care as transplanting is not recommended at all.

Dig a hole twice the size of the pot the plant is in. When removing the plant from the pot, avoid root disturbance as much as possible.

Do not add bonemeal, fertilizer or compost when planting. Acid compost or well-composted pine bark can be added to the soil that was removed to increase acidity in the soil, if needed. Mix in thoroughly.

Place some of this soil back into the hole, ensuring the plant is at the same level as it was in the pot. Firm the soil down around each plant and water well.

In containers Low growing species of fynbos lend themselves very well to containerizing and have become very trendy. The plant’s suitability to pots will be indicated on the label. Ensure that the container has sufficient drainage holes and spread a layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot. Plant your fynbos in a mixture of organic potting soil to which acid compost and river sand has been added. Do not add bone meal when planting.

Acid compost, Eucalyptus mulch and wellaged pine needles or bark make excellent mulch. Avoid using mushroom compost as this is high in phosphorus.

Hardiness Cover young plants (first 2 years) with frost cover until they are well established, especially areas close to the river. Mature plants can tolerate light frost.

Watering During the first two summers after planting, water your plants thoroughly and deeply 2-3 times per week, depending on the rainfall conditions.

Most fynbos are waterwise once fully established and watering can be reduced accordingly. If planted in sandy soil or in containers, they need to be watered daily or every second day, especially during the hot, dry season.

Watering is best done in the early morning to avoid fungal infections.

Mulching After planting, spread a thick (5-8cm) layer of mulch around the plant.

Keep away from the stem to avoid fungal diseases. Mulch will help to retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. The surface roots of fynbos are very sensitive and mulch also helps to suppress weed growth, resulting in less interference with the area around these roots.

Proteacea naturally thrive in nutrientpoor soil and there is very little need for additional fertilizing. Healthy plant material, removed during pruning, can be cut into smaller bits and scattered around the bushes to decompose and replenish soil.

Fertilisers derived from seaweed and fish can be applied at half the recommended rate with plenty of water to assist in root formation, particularly in young plants. In sandy soils and in potted plants one of the recommended organic, granular fertilisers can be applied at the rate of 60g/m² on the surface around the plant and watered in well. Apply three times a year from August to April.

Absolutely avoid the following: • Artificial fertilisers high in phosphorus and nitrogen • The addition of compost to the soil • Manure, mushroom compost and bone meal
