Ed's Note: Oh, how I chuckled over the satire in the meme that found itself in my Whatsapp inbox recently: “Today marks the 5th year that we’ve been in 2020”. I expect you resonate too.

I watched with sheer enchantment as the Paintsmith’s courtyard makeover, featured inside this issue, took place. The pictures don’t seem to do the after photo enough justice to the actual area. What a face lift! Quite remarkable what can be achieved with some good advice, half an inch of bravery and a few pots of paint! Let the transformation begin.

Tantalisingly refreshing summer ice lollies for every pallet, why you should know about nutrient density, children at play and the perfect indoor plants. Much to keep you turning the pages.

Nutrient density is simply the number of nutrients per calorie in a food.

While calories have been used as the yardstick, it is the best we have to allow us to see how much food is consumed per day. However, comparing the nutrients contained in a food or a group of foods eaten in a day to another group of foods or meals with similar energy content is far more beneficial to our health.

When our goal is simply to identify foods that provide more or less of the nutrients we need without having to consume excessive amounts of food, we don’t need perfect accuracy.

The importance of nutrient density Essential micronutrients (i.e. vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids) are critical to the biochemical processes that power your mitochondria and drive all the functions in your body.

Prioritising foods with a higher nutrient value will ensure you get enough vitamins, minerals and fatty acids from the food you eat without having to consume too many calories.

In the early years, there was no need to worry about nutrient density.

The food we ate contained plenty of the nutrients in the right ratios.

However, these days, due to changes in the way food is mass produced, more quickly and cheaply, the number of essential nutrients in our food has declined significantly.

Our food system has changed as we have increased our use of chemical fertilisers and grown more reliant on large scale farming and food manufacturing. Add to this the impact of GMO foods.

Today, more and more of the foods we consume are a mix of cheap vegetable oils and refined starch with added sugars flavours and colours to make them look and taste nutritious. Finding the chemical sweet spot for the average person.

In 2010, 62% of the energy consumed

by Americans came from added fats and oils (23%), flours and cereals (23%) and added sugars (15%). While cheap to produce, these foods are inferior sources of micronutrients.

While most nutritional advice today is focused on what you should avoid (e.g. too much fat, carbs, protein, saturated fat, sugar, etc.), focusing on high nutrient foods ensures you get what you need from food.

Once you learn to fill your plate with nutrientdense diverse foods, you probably won’t have room or cravings for the ‘junk foods’ that are nutrient-poor and easy to overeat.

Fat loss While we all need enough nutrients, prioritising nutrient density is even more important when you are trying to lose weight or the opposite, build muscle. Even though you are eating fewer calories, you still require enough nutrients.

Simply trying to eat a lower quantity of nutrient-poor foods will leave you with cravings that typically lead to increased nutrient hunger for the nutrients you need and eventual rebound binges and fat gain.

There is no mystery or secret to weight-loss. Simply find a way to get more nutrients per calorie in the food you consume.

However, it seems that a similar thing occurs with all micronutrients.

The studies that have been done suggest that a nutrient-dense diet causes people to eat less and reduce their sensation of hunger.

Prioritising nutrient-dense foods will help you reduce your cravings and switch off your cravings once you get enough of the correct nutrients.

People who focus on maximising their nutrient density find that they are full with fewer calories. Nutrient-dense foods tend to contain plenty of protein and fibre and have less fat and starch, so they are typically more satiating and harder to overeat.

The chart below of nutrient density vs satiety score shows that nutrient-dense foods are generally satiating. The foods toward the top right of this chart will provide you with plenty of nutrients and help you manage your appetite. In contrast, the foods toward the bottom left will drive hunger and overeating to obtain adequate nutrients.

Sure, there are other significant factors such as genetics, hormones, age and more, but the starting place is understanding the nutrient richness of what you eat.

Once your non-beneficial food habits have been replaced with high nutrient habits, your body will let you know which nutrients you need in order to thrive.

The Protein Leverage Hypothesis suggests that we keep eating food until we get the protein we need to maintain our muscles.

Micronutrient deficiencies Rather than comparing your nutrient intake against the ideal nutrient targets, in our work we consider a client’s health symptoms and prioritise the nutrients that are typically deficient when these conditions are present.

The example image below reveals the Spectracell Nutrient Wheels showing the nutrients associated with depression. There are numerous conditions that can be attributed to such nutrient deficiencies. We would develop the optimal foods required to boost the nutrients that are associated with the most serious conditions.

 Calcium is needed for bone and tooth formation, muscle contraction, blood clotting, and nerve transmission; reduces the risk of colon cancer; prevents hypertension.  Chromium assists with insulin function, increases fertility, is required for carbohydrate/fat metabolism, essential for fetal growth and development, helps lower elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides.  Copper is necessary for bone formation, energy production, hair and skin colouring, and taste sensitivity; involved in the healing process; aids in iron transport; helps metabolise several fatty acids.

Important to know what the nutrients do?

The functions and interactions of micronutrients in our body are complex, and no one condition can be treated without getting in the multitude of other nutrients required. Our observation is most people, eat the same foods on a weekly basis. This creates the exposure to be deficient in nutrients not provided by the foods eaten, and possibly the medication taken which causes untold deficiencies not being highlighted by the medical fraternity.  Vitamin C protects from cardiovascular diseases, cancers, joint diseases, cataracts, and the common cold; aids in collagen and elastin synthesis, both necessary elements in the bone matrix, skin, tooth dentin, blood vessels, and tendons. Protects against oxygen-based damage to cells (free radicals); required for fat synthesis; has antiviral and detoxifying properties.

 Magnesium is involved in 300 essential metabolic reactions; necessary for muscle activity and nerve impulses; regulates temperature and blood pressure; essential for detoxification; aids in creating strong bones and teeth.  Choline is vital for lipid and cholesterol transport and metabolism of methyl groups. Choline may improve cognitive function and memory.  Potassium is the major cation of intracellular fluid and an almost constant component of lean body tissues. The movement of potassium out of cells and sodium into cells changes the electrical potential during depolarisation and repolarisation of nerve and muscle cells.

 Selenium is an antioxidant and in redox reactions and thyroid metabolism.  Phosphorous is the second-most abundant inorganic element in the body. Phosphorus as phosphate is a significant buffer and helps to protect blood systemic acid/base balance.  Vitamin B12 is required for the synthesis of fatty acids in myelin and, in conjunction with folate, for DNA synthesis. Adequate intake of vitamin B12 is essential for healthy blood function and neurological function.  Sodium has an essential role in the maintenance of critical physiological activities such as extracellular fluid volume and cellular membrane potential.

Nutrient Density on a Budget The average person thinks that the most nutritious foods are unaffordable.

However after ten years of teaching, consulting and following a high nutrient dense eating program, I find it far more cost effective than eating fast foods and many of the animal products available. An example would be for the same amount of protein per serving, eating an animal based meal could cost between R40-65 while eating the same amount of protein from legumes, could cost between R5-R10.

What nutrients are you missing?

To help you understand what nutrients you need to focus on jot down what you eat over 7 days. Thereafter analyse these foods for their various nutrients and from this you will see what is missing. You may be surprised that the supplements you take may not be necessary while others will be.

If you require help to understand your nutrient deficiencies, we used an advanced programme to highlight what is lacking across 41 different nutrients. From this analysis you quickly realise how deficient our bodies are which consequentially results in the conditions we may suffer from and potentially end up taking chronic or other medication.

Whether with blocks, horsing around on the playground, or overseeing a game of “house” during choice time, a lot of what he seemed to do at school was romp around and create games with his friends.

And there is such value in that play, which is why schools bake it into their daily routines. Not just for little kids, either. As the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) puts it, children of all ages need play to “optimize their development,” “enhance their brain structure” and — perhaps most salient of all these days — help them manage “toxic stress.”

“Play is critical for learning...literally everything,” LaNesha Tabb, a kindergarten teacher and Juicy Juice expert, told HuffPost. ”Young students are learning everything from colors and shapes to the art of negotiation when they play. Not only that, but when young children play, they are given the opportunity to learn important self-regulation strategies. They get to practice losing, winning and taking turns.”

“If playtime is undervalued or cut,” Tabb added, “children are missing out on so many organic learning experiences.”

With all of that in mind — and given that parents are embarking on an unprecedented new school year where so many of us are acting as partprincipal, part-classmate — HuffPost Parents spoke to a collection of experts and our community of readers who shared some of their go-to playtime activities. Basically, types of play that are so fun, kids will totally miss out on the powerful learning lesson they’re getting at the same time.

Build something together.

So they’re consuming a lot of information, but maybe in a more passive way than they’re used to.

“It’s hands-on,” said Nash of building activities. “They have the ability to be the creators and to be builders.”

When kids play with building blocks or bricks (or other materials!) they’re working on creativity, problem-solving and perhaps most important right now, resiliency, Nash said. When something breaks or a creation didn’t go the way they’d hoped, they’re able to work through that frustration in a safe, fun way.

Try old-school board games or card games, “Card games!” recommended HuffPost Parents reader Jaclyn Edwards.

“Board games will teach children to win and lose graciously but also, they will gain practice with being strategic,” said Tabb.

One bonus: board and card games are great for parents who aren’t necessarily drawn to long stretches of imaginative play, or who are just too exhausted to make it through another round of make-believe. They’re engaging — and pretty darn easy.

Bake or cook together.

Baking is a great activity for kids of all ages — particularly if you’ve got tweens or teens at home who are weeeeell out of the imaginative play zone.

It’s an activity that several HuffPost Parents readers noted was one of their go-tos, and for good reason: it helps hone basic math skills, it requires that they read and/or listen carefully and follow instructions, and it’s an overall confidence booster.

Baking or cooking for others is also a form of altruism, so it’s a really easy, organic way to teach children to care for — and think of — others.

Another option? Encourage your kiddos to cook for themselves. “My 3rdgrade twin daughters have also been making their own breakfast each morning, and they have mastered scrambled eggs and toast,” HuffPost Parents reader Anne Marie Fleming said.

Run around. Jump. Throw a ball.

Parents might not necessarily think of kids running around and blowing off steam as a form of learning, but as experts like Nash point out — physical activity and learning really go hand-in-hand.

“Recess is “crucial” not just because it helps break up the day, but because it offers a time when children work on their motor skills and practice interpersonal skills..”

“When you’re physically active with what you’re doing, your mind is working overtime because it’s thinking about those physical actions along with whatever information you’re getting,” Nash said.

That’s a big reason why schools have recess, for example. Recess is “crucial” not just because it helps break up the day, but because it offers a time when children work on their motor skills and practice interpersonal skills.

Even just running around together a bit, or playing a game of catch, can help foster those skills and help kids burn energy so that when it is time to sit down in front of a screen and tune into another Zoom class, they’re really ready.

Do something totally new ... for both of you.

One way to really boost learning for your child — and to make sure that you as a parent are truly engaged in whatever you’re doing together — is to play at something new for them and for you. That can involve learning a new game together (be it a video game or an old-school board game), trying out a new sport, a craft or science experiment, or maybe even just getting a new toy that requires a bit of putting together that you have to kind of muddle through together.

“I always encourage parents to learn with the child, get right in there and try it, too,” said Nash. “Your child will learn how to be a learner from you.”

What is the difference between ice cream and ice lolly?

Ice cream is, of course, made from dairy. Ice lollies typically don't contain dairy, but sometimes do when the flavours are more nuanced and experimental.

1. Avocado Coconut Lollies 1 medium avocado 2 1/3 cups unsweetened Almond Breeze Almond Coconut milk 6 tbsp raw sugar (or your favourite sweetener) 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut flakes Directions: Combine the avocado, milk and sugar in the blender and mix until smooth.

2. Strawberry Ice Lollies 250g ripe strawberries 100ml natural yoghurt (or apple or orange juice) 1 teaspoon honey Method: Whizz up 250g ripe strawberries, 100ml natural yoghurt (or apple or orange juice) and 1 teaspoon honey in a blender or food processor.

Taste, and add a little more honey if you think you need to.

Divide the strawberry mixture between 4 ice lolly moulds, then pop a stick into each one.

Put the ice lollies in the freezer for at least 4 hours or until solid.

Strawberry Yogurt Ice Lollies 150g strawberries 90g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 500g tub of low-fat natural yogurt 100g melted white chocolate 60g sugar balls or strands You will also need 6 or 8 ice lolly moulds Method: Put strawberries, caster sugar vanilla extract in a bowl. Crush fruit until roughly broken up and the sugar has dissolved.

Mix in low-fat natural yogurt. Pour into 6 or 8 ice-lolly moulds and freeze. Once frozen, take them out of the moulds and dip tips of the lollies in melted white chocolate, then quickly dip them in sugar balls or strands. Serve as soon as they set!

1 peach, cut into 1cm slices 2 kiwis, peeled and sliced into 5mm rounds 75g blueberries 110g strawberries, hulled and halved 350-500ml white grape juice Method: Snugly arrange some of each fruit in eight 75g ice lolly moulds.

Pour enough juice into each mould to just cover the fruit.

Insert sticks and freeze until solid, six hours (or up to two weeks).

3. Traffic Light Ice Lollies 250g strawberries 4 ½ tbsp honey 3 large ripe juicy peaches, peeled, stoned and sliced 5 large ripe kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced

Method: In a blender, puree the strawberries and then sieve the puree to get rid of the seeds. Stir 1 ½ tbsp of the honey into the strawberry puree.

Pour the strawberry puree into each of the ice lolly moulds (or use empty yoghurt pots) until each mould is one third full and freeze until firm (about 1½ hours).

Repeat the process with the peaches and 1 ½ tbsp of the honey (no need to sieve the peaches) and freeze until firm, then add the kiwi fruit mixed with the rest of the honey and insert the sticks.

Freeze until solid.

Method: Put the sugar and water into a small saucepan and boil until syrupy (about 3 minutes). Allow to cool.

Puree the strawberries and sieve to get rid of the seeds. Puree the watermelon and mix with the pureed strawberries and cooled syrup.

Banana and Yogurt Ice Pops 160g Greek yogurt 1 ripe banana 1tsp runny honey You will also need: 4 small empty and clean kid-sized yogurt pots (the pots I used held 55g of yogurt) 4 lollipop sticks Small amount of kitchen foil To make one ingredient banana ice cream you need to slice the banana and freeze the slices. Once frozen you whizz them in a food processor to make really smooth ice cream.

Method: First of all, double check that the empty yogurt pots have been thoroughly cleaned and dried.

Take the Greek yogurt from the fridge and ask your little one to help weigh it into a small mixing bowl.

Mashing the banana is good fun for children so let them take the lead.

They can peel off the skin and then place the banana into a little bowl.

Using a fork, they can set to work, mashing the banana until it’s as smooth as they can make it. You may need to help with the last little bit!

Now your child can use a spoon to scoop up the mashed banana and mix it into the Greek yogurt and honey mixture.

As the yogurt pots are quite small, it’s best to use a teaspoon when spooning the yogurt mixture into the pots. You may end up with a messy worktop otherwise, but I suppose that’s what kitchen towels and wipes are for!

Once your pots are all equally filled with the yogurt mixture, turn your attention to the foil.

Use scissors to cut out square pieces of foil, just a little larger than the top of the yogurt pots. Place the foil pieces over the top of each pot to cover the yogurt, then press the edges of the foil under the ‘lip’ of the pot to seal.

With a sharp knife, cut a little slit into the middle of each foil lid.

Your little helper can now place the lollipop sticks into each hole in the foil and down into the yogurt mixture.

Place the yogurt ice pops into the freezer for an hour or two, or you could freeze overnight if need be. It depends how long your child will wait.

When you are ready to eat your banana and yogurt ice pops, take the from the freezer and leave to stand for 10 – 20 minutes to soften. Then ease them out from the plastic yogurt pots and enjoy! continue on page 19 Featherbrooke News  112020  18

Method: Place the biscuits in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Add 2 tbsp condensed milk and blend again until the crumbs start to clump together.

Divide the biscuit crumbs between 8 paper cups, pressing down with the back of a spoon. Make sure you scrape out every last crumb, then you won’t have to wash the processor before the next step.

Roughly chop any large berries. Put half the red berries, half the remaining condensed milk, and half the yogurt in the food processor and blend until smooth. Remove the blade from the processor and stir through the remaining chopped red berries. Divide the mixture between 4 of the paper cups. Repeat with the purple berries and remaining ingredients.

Place a lolly stick into each cup, pushing down into the biscuit base to help it stand up straight. Freeze for at least 4 hrs before serving. To remove the lollies from the cups, tip upside down, and gentle squeeze the cup until the lolly slips out.

Dry brushing technique: Only dip the tip of the brush into paint and then remove most of the paint by brushing on newspaper. The less paint on the brush the nicer the effect will be, you can rather repeat the process than have blotches of thick paint on your project.

Philodendron xanadu This is just one of those plants that give endless joy. It’s a full bushy plant and ideal for covering that awkward empty space in your foyer. Philodendron Xanadu prefers medium to bright indirect light—placing it near an east or south-facing window is ideal.

It will, however, survive in lower light and the leaves will turn a darker green. Direct sun or too much light will burn or fade the leaves.

Once again, used in different containers as in the pictures, the plant leans itself to different design styles.

Care: Direct sun burns the leaves. Water a Xanadu thoroughly until the water drains out the drip holes in the bottom of the pot, and then allow the top 50% of the soil to dry out before watering again. Leaves turn yellow if the soil stays too wet. A Xanadu grows more slowly in the winter and requires less water.

Here are some plants that thrive indoors (with a guide to their light and caring requirements). This will help make decisions on what to plant where in your home.

Care: Sansevierias do best in moderate to bright indirect light. However, they will do fine in low light areas and can also withstand full sun. Your Sansevieria does not need much water (once every 10 days), and overwatering can cause the plant to rot. Be sure to keep the leaves dry when watering and allow the soil to dry between watering.

Using plants in modern design is even more of a challenge because modern design seems to demand clean lines and simplicity. Nature, on the other hand, tends to be wild and chaotic. However, that doesn’t mean modern interiors need to forego greenery. There are ways to make it work and bring plants into the design as a creative layer that is equally as important as the other accessories in the room.

Plants can be as expressive as a work of art, and how we use it is the key to their success and the way we express ourselves with nature. The container we use often depicts the style and where it will fit in your home. If you have a contemporary home, go for something that suits the style of the furniture and the ambience. Same goes with any style or design. In this picture white pots have been cleverly used to match the furniture and the wooden stands enhance the wooden floors.

Dracaena fragrans Not a lot of space, but still need some kind of greenery? This is the plant that can be added to a corner or even in a walk way and it won’t be in your way. A beautiful plant that lends itself to any type of home design - modern, contemporary or whatever your style.

Care: Dracaena requires less water than most indoor plants. Keep them hydrated by misting the leaves with water and keeping the soil lightly misted (never soggy) as well with good drainage. Always allow the top soil to dry out before watering. Do not overwater, as it may cause root rot.
