As the seasons have shifted, our community has expanded, making great strides for art education in Chicago. ArtReach at Lillstreet, our not-forprofit sister organization, recently celebrated the completion of a public art project in partnership with Ravenswood Elementary—you can see the students’ beautiful mosaic planters outside the school. We invite you to learn more about ArtReach while supporting their programming and mission at Art to the People, the annual fundraiser, on November 9. Live music, inventive cocktails & hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and much more will make for a memorable evening. Lillstreet is especially excited to add The Drawing Workshop to our community. For 40 years, The Drawing Workshop, now located across the tracks at 4410 N Ravenswood, has offered a unique program that prepares the serious art student to develop a strong visual vocabulary in a classical, atelier style environment. By bringing Lillstreet’s painting and drawing classes into the wonderful space that houses The Drawing Workshop and adding new classes to enhance the already existing traditions, we will continue the serious environment and instruction offered by this Chicago institution. On November 22 and 23, join us as we celebrate the season with the kickoff of Let There Be Light, our 38th Annual Holiday Show & Sale, featuring our holiday exhibition opening, great new gift items in the shop, the holiday party, the 2nd annual holiday art fair, and free art workshops in the Lillstreet Loft. We look forward to another year of growing our creative community with new and old friends alike.

MINIATURES ( 4 WEEKS ) Throw or handbuild miniature vessels, sets or trays that can be used for ornaments or children’s toys.

( 4 WEEKS ) Here’s your chance to get a taste of an alternate form of firing. Saggars are refractory containers; fine Chinese porcelain work was fired inside saggars to keep fly ash and other impurities off during firing. Today the same method is used to contain combustibles and organic materials to encourage interesting surfaces on the work inside. We’ll talk about the best forms for this kind of low temperature firing and explore surface preparation as well as do in class loading and firing. Work is non-functional, and there may be some outside class time required. Monday 1:30-4:30pm

( 3 WEEKS )

( 4 WEEKS )

( 4 WEEKS )

Explore surface treatment as we make one bas-relief repeating tile that we will cast in plaster for a press mold. Students will need to bring some carving tools.

This class will explore a variety of lidded forms created using the potters’ wheel including jars, casseroles, and tureens. This intensive class will address many forms with lids that can be made with clay.

Choose five consecutive weeks within the term and an instructor to offer individual tutelage for one hour per week. Fee does not include clay or open studio time outside of the five weeks. Approval of the program coordinator, Karen Avery, required.

Students will take their wheel throwing skills to the next level. We will create an object using wheelthrowing and/or handbuilding techniques, then investigate and alter the piece. A pinched piece could become the container and the wheel thrown elements could become attachments for handles. Our skills will be put to the test by using new modes of construction. Wednesday 7-10pm

Joe Kraft Starts November 27 $165, Members $160

HUMP AND SLUMP MOLDS ( 4 WEEKS ) This class is for the student who is interested in creating a relatively simple mold to be used for creating functional ceramic bowls, plates, and platters. Wednesday 7-10pm

HANDLE THIS ( 3 WEEKS ) We all love to lift up pots. But how do they feel in our hands? This 3-week course allows students to create the “perfect” handle for their vessels. Demos will include a complete array of techniques for building handles- pulled, pinched, precut, and templates. And don’t forget, you will have the 3 weeks to make handles, but also to make glorious vessels on the pottery wheel. Thursday 7-10pm

TRADITIONAL FIGURE SCULPTURE ( 4 WEEKS ) Working weekly, from a nude model, students will take a methodical and anatomical approach to sculpting the figure realistically. Students may choose to sculpt a head, torso of full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, skeletal structure, body proportions and pose gesture. Building techniques problem solving, observational skills, internal armature, will be emphasized. Special attention will be given to traditional and untraditional finishing techniques for sculpture. Students are encouraged to creatively finish their sculpture. A model will be used as needed and fee collected in class.

IMAGERY AND THE TILE

SIMPLY SODA: BEGINNING SODA

( 4 WEEKS )

( 4 WEEKS )

Sunday 10am–1pm

Students will explore how an image can translate to line, shape, form or pattern. Taking these inspirations from an image, we will translate them onto a clay tile. We often think of tiles as squares, but the shape is limitless. Red earthenware will be used along side colored slips and glazes.

Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results. You’ll make pots for the soda kiln, and weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will increase your knowledge of more complex forms. You’ll also learn the uses of soda slips and glazes, and the class will make the soda firing process accessible and understandable. Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, introduction to firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required.
