WINTER CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEKS OF JANUARY 11 & FEBRUARY 15


Creative Retreats Lillstreet welcomes you to retreat with us as you balance your busy schedule with peaceful self-expression in our warm, inviting Loft space. Our one-day retreats offer you the chance to relax and renew while immersing yourself in the creative process. Each retreat consists of a unique combination of a 75-minute (all level) yoga class, a catered lunch and an afternoon of hands-on art instruction. Yoga classes will be taught by Bloom Yoga instructors in a hatha/gentle vinyasa style with appropriate modifications offered for students of all levels. These unique workshops have been developed for students of all skill levels. Your retreat will be lead by an accomplished Lillstreet teaching artist.

Create your own accessory for winter in this first-time knitting retreat. In our relaxed, comfortable loft setting, we’ll cover the basics of yarn, needles and stitches, including casting on, knitting, purling and binding off. Each student will leave with a unique and stylish cowl. Together, we’ll get hooked on knitting while stretching our minds, fingers and bodies. Please bring to class two skeins of chunky yarn and one pair of circular needles sized to match (around 11-13). All levels welcome. Saturday, January 23 10am-4pm $100, Members $95

Figure Sculpture: Model Marathon Join us as we combine classical figure modeling traditions mixed with contemporary approaches to sculpting. Working from a live model, participants are encouraged to work intuitively, allowing creative interaction between the model and clay. While exploring pose gesture, the sculptural volumes and contour lines, emphasis will be on self expression. Work will be finished using a variety of techniques in preparation for kiln firing. All materials included Finished sculptures will be fired and available for pick up 2-3 weeks following the retreat.

Creative Nesting: Block Printed Tea Towel Workshop Brighten up your home with your very own, uniquely printed tea towels Join us as we lead you through the process of block printing and you’ll be surprised at how easy it is. Together, we’ll experiment and you’ll not only take home a new skill, but leave with two tea towels. Please bring an image or idea for your block pattern. All levels welcome. In the Moment: The Intuitive Mandala Investigate your internal world through the creation of your own mixed media Mandala. Each participant will focus on an individual core idea, concept and/or occurrence and explore its significance. Meditation will be used as a tool while exploring the intentions behind different Mandala compositions. Bot 2D and 3d, various techniques in color theory and materials will be used. Ceramics Lillstreet’s Long-Established Clay Department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. MULTILEVEL Dreams, Myths & Stories in Clay Sculpture 10 Weeks

Explore personal stories, dreams and myths in hand-built clay forms. You will learn to form, texture and finish work bringing your ideas to life. Each class includes time for you to share insights, inspirations or ask questions. In the final session we will view and discuss everyone’s work in terms of the dreams, myths or stories expressed.

Mosaics with Artreach

To celebrate Lillstreet’s 40th anniversary and ArtReach’s 25th, help us design and install a mosaic to adorn the walls at Lillstreet. This collaborative project introduces beginners to mosaic making, which includes design and composition, materials and adhesives, cutting and layout and the grouting process. In addition, students will create a small project to take home. No prior art experience necessary. Material fee includes all materials and tools. A portion of the class fee will benefit ArtReach.

Small scale, large scale, solid and hollow extrusions will be the primary building block for this 10 week class. Manipulate, cut and build sculptural, abstract forms or functional objects. Precise and loose building methods are both encouraged and welcomed. Artists will be discussed and presented who are using extrusions in their work.

What is the perfect coffee cup, cereal bowl or flower vase? You can pick your favorite functional form and begin a journey of exploration. Repeatedly creating the same form with different shapes and surface treatments can lead to developing a style that is your own.

Imagination flows as you create abstract, realistic and anthropomorphic or animal sculptures. You may choose to articulate your figures through the application of kinetic elements to create a doll.

The Low-Fire Handbuilt Surface Use handbuilding techniques to make functional work that tells your story. Learn new surface techniques such as mishima, sgraffito, monoprinting and transfers. Explore the pot’s ability to transcend function to become a canvas for your ideas. Sculptural Narratives in Clay

Do you have an idea for a favorite cup, vase or other sculptural or functional form that you would like to repeat? Make it, and then learn to make 2-part plaster molds from which you will learn the technique of slip casting. Pouring out specialized liquid clay from the mold you made is called slip casting. Advanced Wheelthrowing

Print on Clay

If you have basic throwing skills and want to learn about handbuilding, this is the class for you. Throw pots and embellish with handbuilt elements, throw forms and use sections of them in your handbuilt vessels. Coils, slabs and pinch pots can add another dimension to your thrown work.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

Print repeatable images on leatherhard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Learn relief, screen-printing and paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly and indirectly to greenware. Transfer images, textures and patterns to your clay pieces using slips, stains and special inks. Most techniques can be adapted for earthenware.

Advanced Topics in Soda Firing: Paint with Fire 10 Weeks

Analyze the critical steps necessary to create dynamic and inventive ceramic works utilizing the potter’s wheel. Study animal specimens and their metaphorical significance. Animals are often depicted in art to symbolize the human condition. We will take field trips to The Field Museum, draw from dioramas, specimens, use reference photographs and study the anatomy of various animals. You will learn how to create small compositional studies that can become more elaborate and personal finished paintings. Museum admission is not included in class fee.

You will be introduced to techniques necessary to accurately render botanical subjects using graphite and watercolor. You will keep a sketchbook to record details and test techniques, then apply those skills to more considered and developed pieces. Some class periods will be spent at local conservatories practicing our artistry in the field.

Celebrate the whimsical worlds of children’s literature as you translate written word into visual language through creative illustration. Explore different approaches to interpreting and illustrating children’s stories. A spiculum is a tapered tube made from a flat sheet of metal resulting in a tubular form that can be bent after the seam is soldered. Learn various forming techniques beyond the basic spiculum including curved seams, anticlastic forms for open seams and synclastic forms so the seam is on the inner curve. Vessel forms transitioning from anticlastic to synclastic and closing them will be discussed. Bracelets, collars, earrings, beads, vessels and abstract sculptural forms are possible. Making Multiples with Blanking Dies 3 Day

One-piece blanking dies allow you to easily cut out precise, duplicate shapes from non-ferrous metal sheets, dramatically speeding up production. Learn to develop patterns for this process and the method of sawing dies from flat stock tool steel. Fusing & Etching Copper Clad Silver (Bi-Metal) 3 Day

Learn to fuse copper and sterling to create bi-metal sheet. Once achieved, the sheet will be rolled down to a workable gauge. Date Night—Fusing

3 Day

Copper and sterling are fusion bonded through compression and high heat to form a solid billet with alternating layers of metal. Billet is fired in a refractory brick minifurnace with a torch. After forging to a pre-determined thickness, the billet can be made into twisted ring stock or patterned sheet metal. Raw material is made in conjunction with a jewelry project; a seamless washer formed ring or forged band ring, both lined with sterling. Create hand-illustrated digital patterns from drawings, paintings, Photoshop and Illustrator. Take your fun scribbles and sideline doodle art to the next level in this clay-based class that unites surface illustration and sculpture. Picasso, Paints & Prints 5 Weeks

Picasso gives us many opportunities to explore colors, paints and prints while comparing realistic and abstract art. Family Workshops Graphic Novel Studio - 13+ 5 Weeks

Learn the steps involved in sharing your own story. You’ll go step-by-step to learn narrative story structure, writing, scripting, thumbnailing, penciling, layout, inking and coloring a complete comic. Digital drawing and painting techniques, webcomics and self-publishing will also be explored. Graphic novelist as well as those with no drawing or comic experience welcome. Introduction to Video Game Design

These workshops are a wonderful opportunity to work together on theme projects and bring laughter, smiles and art into your life. Living Drawings 5 Weeks

Make your drawings and doodles wiggle, kick, wink or shake with animation. Learning from animations from different times and places, you will have workshops and assignments that cover basic techniques. There will be three projects throughout the course: a class-collaborative “Exquisite Corpse” morph animation an abstract “doodle” cycled animation, and a short looped animation of your own imagined character walking.

Go Dog Go Bring a photo of your pet or favorite animal to learn the basics on making a more life-like sculpture of your furry (or scaly!) friend. Saturday, February 27 10am-12pm Julie Christou

Seder Plates Make your own Seder plate. Come with family to work together on your heirloom plate using personal imagery and text. Embellish your plate with color and texture. Kids ages 3+ can choose from a variety of clay or multimedia projects including: masks,outer space clay, bowls, mugs, clay animals and awesome accessories. Metalsmithing parties are available for kids, ages 10-18. Projects might include: jewelry or small sculpture in copper or brass. Silver available for an additional fee. Parties are usually scheduled for Saturday or Sunday afternoons from 11am-1pm, 2-4pm, or 5-7pm. If you have a special theme, we’ll develop a special project just for your party!

Artist Membership: $40/year

REGISTER EARLY! CLASSES FILL QUICKLY. We strongly encourage you to preregister to ensure a space in class. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. Workshops must be paid in full at time of registration. Balance is due on the first day of class. Lillstreet accepts payments by VISA, Master Card, American Express or Discover. Checks should be made payable to Lillstreet Art Center.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from.

• A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

HOLIDAYS AND MISSED CLASSES For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session. TOOLS AND MATERIALS Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from Lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds Please Read Carefully CANCELLATIONS Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative Retreats, Visiting Artist Workshops, and Summer Camps have separate cancellation policies.
