Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-theart equipment during our generous open studio hours.

Beginning students will develop fundamental throwing techniques while returning students refine their techniques to create more complex forms. Be inspired by those around you and challenged by your personal goals. Teacher demonstrations are designed for multilevel students. Class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay.

Whether your aim is functional or sculptural ceramics, learn the basic techniques of handbuilding as you work with slabs, coils and pinching to create virtually anything you can dream up. Use of tools such as molds, slab roller and extruder will be demonstrated. Class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay.

Increase your clay skills while building functional and sculptural objects. Weekly demonstrations will teach more complex techniques to manipulate clay and allow further development of your handbuilt work.

Simply Soda: Beginning Soda 10 Weeks Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. Using slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and understandable. You will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Prerequisite: One year of experience working with clay or instructor approval.

Intermediate Wheelthrowing 10 Weeks You have mastered the basics; now challenge yourself to throw a better pot. Design pottery and develop a personal aesthetic while learning techniques to make complex forms. Weekly demonstrations and experimentation with new glaze combinations will help develop your signature look. Prerequisite: Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing.

Print on Clay

Do you start your day with a cup of coffee, a bowl of cereal or a plate of toast? Take an exploratory look at your favorite morning forms and experiment with new colors and adding textures to your favorite pieces.

Print repeatable images on leatherhard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Learn relief, screenprinting and paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly and indirectly to greenware. Transfer images, textures and patterns to your clay pieces using slips, stains and special inks. Most techniques can be adapted for earthenware.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

This class is designed primarily for students who want to develop specific ideas, refine techniques and pursue independent projects.

Learn tricks and techniques that save time and make it easier to execute multiples with consistency in form. Interested in focusing on a particular form but not concerned with making them identical? We’ll address the idea of making a series. Push a form’s concept while keeping original ideas at the core. Critique and class dialog will be an important component of this class.

Explore the confluence of art and the environment in clay. Whether creating abstract representations of the flora and fauna in their environment or exploring the geometric uniformity of the growth of a budding plant, nature can stimulate artistic expression.

Prerequisite: At least two Intermediate Wheelthrowing

Best of Both 10 Weeks If you have basic throwing skills and want to learn about handbuilding, this is the class for you. Throw pots and embellish with handbuilt elements, throw forms and use sections of them in your handbuilt vessels. Coils, slabs and pinch pots can add another dimension to your thrown work. Prerequisite: Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing.

The Low-Fire Handbuilt Surface 10 Weeks Use handbuilding techniques to make functional work that tells a story. Learn new surface techniques such as mishima, sgraffito, monoprinting and transfers. Explore the pot’s ability to transcend function to become a canvas for your ideas. We will work with low-fire terra cotta, terra sigillata and glazes. Prerequisite: At least two Beginning/ Advanced Beginning Handbuilding

Extrude the Tube 9 Weeks Small scale, large scale, solid and hollow extrusions will be the primary building blocks. Manipulate, cut and build sculptural, abstract forms or functional objects. Precise and loose methods are both encouraged. We will explore and discuss artists who are using extrusions in their work. Prerequisite: One year of Handbuilding or Wheelthrowing.

You’ve mastered the basics, now it’s time to increase your clay skills while building functional and sculptural objects. Demonstrations will teach more complex techniques to manipulate clay and allow further development of your handbuilt work. Discussions of contemporary approaches will help you find your voice in clay.

10 Weeks Explore the development and creation of works specifically for Lillstreet’s soda kiln based on the formal elements of design. You will be encouraged to design and create a cohesive body of work through weekly demonstrations and individual critique. Class participation will include all stages of the creative process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. 3 day Get an introduction to the processes involved in soda firing. Friday night, bring in bisque for slip, glazing & wadding. Then load and close the kiln. Return Saturday evening for two hours during the soda insertion part of the firing. Then come back on Monday evening for four hours to unload, clean the kiln, potluck & critique. Bill Wilkey Workshop Bill Wilkey will demonstrate his large utilitarian vocabulary by focusing on creating divided and textured surfaces in a way that highlights the geometry of the pot. The wheel is a starting point for the altered pieces he creates. Techniques include rasping and texturing to create multiple planes, giving the pieces lines, edges and corners. Drop-in figure drawing sessions offer an excellent opportunity for beginning to advanced students to practice their perception and drawing skills. Pastels, being both a painting and drawing medium, helps the drawing student to begin working in color. Layering and blending techniques will help you understand how to mix colors directly on the paper. Discover why the medium inspired great artists for its quickness in capturing visual effects and color intensity. The class will work with still life subjects. Continue your study of oils as you expand your practice with advanced techniques and challenges. Projects include using complementary colors, copying a master and creating both a palette knife painting and an all white painting. Some oil painting experience is required.

The Portrait & Figure II

Prerequisites: Introduction to Oil Painting and Oil Painting ll or equivalent experience.

In this continuing course, the material introduced in part A will be reviewed and expanded upon by longer, more studied poses and the introduction of additional materials and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on developing perceptual skills needed for representational drawing.

Work with a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional painting tools, materials and supports. Working with water-soluble paints (including watercolor, ink and gouache) on paper, board, duralar and other synthetic surfaces, you will discover new ways to integrate materials, techniques and ideas. Mokume-gane: Wood Grain Pattern in Metal 3 Day Copper and sterling are fusion bonded through compression and high heat to form a solid billet with alternating layers of metal. Billet is fired in a refractory brick mini-furnace with a torch. After forging to a predetermined thickness, the billet can be made into twisted ring stock or patterned sheet metal. Raw material is made in conjunction with a jewelry project; a seamless washer formed ring or forged band ring, both lined with sterling.

Lillstreet Summer Camps bring together kids from across Chicagoland and beyond to have fun and create art alongside their peers. With over 100 camps to choose from, there’s an opportunity for every child, from age 3 ½ to 18, to meet friends who share their interests and enthusiasm for art!

Each day of camp introduces new skills, inspires ideas and offers unforgettable experiences and discoveries. Throughout the week, each camper will create something unique and special—whether a cereal bowl forged from clay, an original design screenprinted on a T-shirt, a painting of the cityscape, or an original movie—to take home, share and keep for a lifetime.

Artist Membership: $40/year • Discounts on classes and workshops • VIP membership card • Discounts at participating art supply stores and other community services • 10% off of gallery purchases

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Monday-Thursday: 8:30am-7:30pm Friday: 8:30am-6pm Saturday: 10am-6pm Sunday: 10am-5pm Register Early! Classes Fill Quickly. We strongly encourage you to preregister to ensure a space in class. Registration is accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. Workshops must be paid in full at time of registration. Balance is due on the first day of class. Lillstreet accepts payments by visa, master card, american express or discover. Checks should be made payable to lillstreet art center.

Holidays And Missed Classes: For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session. Tools And Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative retreats, visiting artist workshops, and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
