Lillstreet’s long-established ceramics department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture and more. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous, free open studio hours.

Beginner/ Advanced Beginner

5 Weeks Dress for mess, and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

Design pottery and develop a personal aesthetic while learning techniques to make complex forms. Introduction to Scratchboard 5 Weeks Learn how to create dramatic blackand-white images using scratchboard. The board itself is a panel covered with a thin layer of white China clay, and then coated with black India ink. Scratching tools are used to scrape away the ink layer, revealing the white underneath. Copper Electroforming

Focus on refining your approach to design, soldering, stone setting and finishing. Further explore patinas and other means of joining metals. This is the perfect class if you are looking to gain more confidence with the fundamentals and design thinking when taking a project from start to finish.

Electroforming is a metal plating process that slowly deposits copper on to the surface of your work to create more density and support. We’ll start by exploring a variety of processes of plating on copper foils, waxes and plastics. We’ll then move to more complex processes that relate to particular interests, like jewelry making and sculpture.

Multilevel Working With Wax & Casting 10 Weeks Explore the three-dimensional possibilities of hard wax for carving and soft wax for modeling. You can expect to complete two small pieces, such as rings, charms or miniature sculptures. Two castings will be done in class, or waxes can be brought to a production caster for a nominal fee.

Metal Clay Mokume-Gane 5 Weeks Learn to create stunning pieces in metal clay mokume-gane, combining fine silver and pure copper in various styles. Over the five weeks together, we will explore many patterns in metals, including wood grain, marbling, inlay, oil drop and cross twist. Each project and pattern builds on skills, techniques and characteristics unique to metal clays, perfect to supplement any metalworking repertoire.

Create clasps that are safe, secure and truly one-of-a-kind. Learn and make both the key and box clasp. We’ll discuss customizing terminals and findings to unify your art jewelry and explore solutions to link your clasp to your piece. You are expected to work with your own design style to explore new ideas in finishing your jewelry.

Explore small-scale forging, focusing on rings. Forging allows you to move metal with a hammer, redistributing mass, and changing dimension without losing material. You’ll start by forging copper or brass rod and then move to sterling. Time permitting, we’ll melt clean sterling scrap into ingots and forge from there. Topics include simple model making, tapering, clean up and alternative methods.

Design and fabricate a hollow form bracelet incorporating a hinge and clasp mechanism. Explore a variety of bracelet and hollowware techniques through daily demonstrations and presentations during this hands-on workshop. 5 Weeks Students interested in collage, assemblage and sketchbooks will learn folded and sewn bookmaking methods; plus we’ll experiment with recycled materials to create sculptural book forms and artist books. Collaborate as a class, and complete individual projects using a variety of materials. Materials will be provided, but students may bring their own drawings, photos and more to complete projects.

Learn to cut linoleum blocks for printing multiples, then combine them with collagraphs— plates made by collaging materials together—to create background textures and direct compositions. Indigo and Natural Dye 5 Weeks All around us certain flowers, tree barks, and fruits can be used as natural dyes. Experience this incredible process through various methods of natural dyeing including indigo, marigold and other materials. We’ll experiment with Shibori (including stitching, pleating, twisting), over-dyeing techniques and mordants to create a spectrum of colors. You provide fabrics after the first week. Indigo and Arashi “Storm” Shibori 5 Weeks Arashi shibori is a resist dye technique that yields diagonal patterns. Start with basic Arashi wrapping on PVC poles; then create more complex patterns with stitching (Nui shibori) including variations such as spider web and willow shibori, and Bo-maki shibori. Fashion I: Working with Commercial Patterns 10 Weeks There’s a wide world of project opportunities out there but working with commercial patterns for the first time can be confusing and daunting. Screen Print III: Print with Acid Dye 5 Weeks Printing with dye allows fabrics to retain their soft feeling: no ink sitting on the surface! Acid dye is necessary to print on animal fibers such as silk and wool. Learn to apply acid dyes to fabric with screen printing. Workshops Serger Basics 1 Day A serger is not only used to professionally finish your seam allowances, it’s also necessary for sewing with stretch fabrics. In order to tackle projects like loungewear, athletic-wear and swimwear, you’ll need to learn the intricacies of this complicated machine. Machine threading, manipulating and troubleshooting will be discussed. This is a great option for independent students hoping to expand their practice. Music and art collide in this fun, creative combination class for our youngest artists. We’ll begin with songs, instruments and dance before moving to the art table to explore paint, collage and clay. These multimedia, sensory art classes are specially-designed to nurture your little one’s creativity, build self confidence and develop investigative fine motor skills. Projects emphasize social skills and visual thinking through an inspiring and art-filled time.

In this skill-building class, students will be introduced to new art materials, tools, and the work of an artist each week. Students will learn at least three specific ways to use the tools to alter and manipulate the material, and then use their new skills to follow their imaginations by creating their own unique artwork. Students will use clay, paint, paper, fabric, and other media.

In this class, you’ll learn how to imagine, design and hand sew your very own plushies. We’ll make small and large plushies using a variety of materials.

Come explore the world of cartooning with us! You’ll learn the process of writing and drawing a complete short story and find inspiration in popular culture and comics. Inspirations can be based on real life experiences, dreams or an idea you’ve always wanted to put into words and images.

Smocks are available, but dress for mess! A caregiver participates with the child in these classes. These workshops are a wonderful opportunity to work together on themed projects designed to bring laughter, smiles and art into your life. All workshops are two hours long, and children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

It’s that time of year! We will be handbuilding and using molds to create the perfect handmade ceramic Valentine’s Day gifts! Each student will make a mug and a plate to decorate and design using stamps, glazes and more. Clay pieces will be glazed and ready to pick up in time for Valentine’s Day.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from Lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward classes and workshops. Credits are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

• Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary.

Refund Policy For Dropped Classes:

• Private classes can be set up in any of our departments.

Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
