Eager to try something new? Our First-Time programs are an excellent way to learn and create in a relaxed environment. These classes are designed for those who have never taken an art class or are looking to discover a new medium. With seven departments to choose from, you can learn to throw a pot in Ceramics or make jewelry in our Metalsmithing studios, just to name a few.

Free Open Studio at Lillstreet When you register for a Lillstreet class, you can practice in your medium all session long. Currently enrolled students can drop in during open studio hours to share our space, use our equipment and work independently alongside other students and community members.

Free open studio is offered to students currently enrolled in: ・Ceramics ・Digital Arts & Photography ・Drawing & Painting ・Metalsmithing & Jewelry ・Printmaking & Book Arts ・Textiles

Open Studio Policies Open studio hours vary within each department, and schedules change with each session. Paid open studio is offered to glass and enameling students. Lillstreet also offers a paid open studio option in our Metals studios, even if you're not enrolled in a class (see page 18 for details).

Open studio is not available for teen classes, Kidstreet and Lil' Kidstreet classes.

Lillstreet Art Center is proud to present its 2017-2018 Artists-in-Residence Showcase. This group of seven artists joins us from all reaches of the country, representing a variety of art forms. Over the course of their residencies, these artists become an integral part of Lillstreet’s educational program and community. They develop curricula, teach classes and lead community events — all while expanding their own studio practices in our facility.

This exhibition is produced by the residents themselves and will feature work created during their time at Lillstreet.

Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

First-Time Handbuilding

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess, and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery.

Learn a little handbuilding, too -- such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

A Potter’s Class 10 Weeks Using Clary Illian’s classic text A Potter’s Workbook as a guide, we will study forms ranging from cylinders to teapots. Each week we will review a subject in her book then refine your skills with a short exercise. Exercises will last no more than an hour so you will have time to apply new ideas and fresh techniques to your favorite work.

Elevate your ceramic vocabulary while learning a variety of traditional and non-traditional handbuilding techniques. Periodically, the wheel will be used to explore making slump or hump bisque molds, throwing elements for hand built forms and experimenting with unique surface applications. Demonstrations will include coil building, pinching, extruding, soft and stiff slab construction.

Take a step back to reflect upon your throwing technique. You’ll be guided through a number of exercises to help refine your methods at the wheel.

Basic functional forms and glazing techniques will be addressed.

Introduction to Mold Making & Slip Casting 9 Weeks Learn to make two-part plaster molds of household objects to use for slip casting. This technique allows you to pour a specially formulated, liquid clay into your mold and create multiples of the same object.

This independently driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. Instructor is on hand to guide you through your projects, problem solve and demonstrate as needed.

5 Weeks Print repeatable images on green or leather-hard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Use paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly to clay at many stages using special oil-based inks.

Learn surface design techniques that can be adapted for wheel-thrown or hand-built forms, for low or high fire clay bodies. (Even keep your shelves in the ceramics department!)

Prerequisite: One year of ceramics classes or instructor approval.

Join us as we explore hand built vessels and sculptural objects used and inspired by mushrooms. We will center on rituals of every day eating and exploring the shapes, lore, and wonder of the world’s funghi.

Explore and share your perspectives while creating hand built, functional vessels, with a mushroom theme.

There will be a field trip and a guest speaker. The class culminates in a feast centered on the theme of mushrooms.

Sculpting a Bust

Form Focus: Bowls

Working from solid clay, this class will focus on the creation of a 3/4 to life size bust. Each student will choose their own model and work from images.

From large bowls and covered bowls, to altered bowls and bowl sets, we will delve into the techniques and aesthetics of bowl making. We’ll take into consideration specific functions while making formal choices, and push boundaries with size. Surface decoration and glazing methods will be discussed.

Prerequisite: Two handbuilding classes.

Learn basic torch techniques while creating simple, decorative bead shapes. Shaping, heat control, color, use of tools, classroom equipment and studio safety will be covered.

Learn how to create geometric and organic forms using wire, tube and rod to create a variety of jewelry or small sculptural pieces. You will learn/ refine skills such as pick soldering, scoring and bending techniques to create shapes and forms.

Chemistry meets metalsmithing!

Create jewelry and small sculpture by depositing copper on to copper foil, wire, wax models and found plastics.

As the copper builds on your original form, it creates a complex, durable surface without much extra weight.

You can expect to create one to two electroformed copper pieces and explore finishing techniques, like patinas, metal sealants and possibly enamels.

Learn to craft colorful prints of your own designs to hang on your walls or turn into handmade notecards.

Learn the photo-emulsion process to print from your own drawings or digital files. Material fee includes ink, newsprint and some paper.

Explore printmaking and handmade books in our fully-equipped studio. Letterpress and bookbinding complement techniques such as etching, relief and screen printing. Get creative with traditional, contemporary and experimental approaches to printmaking.

Monotypes & Collagraphs 10 Weeks Combine contemporary painting and printmaking techniques to create unique, mixed media monotypes.

Expand them with collagraphs— plates made by collaging materials together–to achieve visual depth.

Experiment with collage, stamping, stenciling and layering colors. Plates, all inks and some paper will be supplied, additional paper may be purchased in class.

Create a print in multiple colors from just one block of linoleum.

This technique, invented by Picasso, involves successively cutting away pieces of the block after printing each color, resulting in vibrant, multicolored prints.

Water-Based Monotype Prints 5 Weeks Explore the beauty of painterly, non-toxic monotype using your own sketches, photos or abstract compositions allowing you to develop expressive colors, bold black & whites or combinations of both. Our student population is diverse—from professional artists who sell at artisan fairs, online shops and consignment, to those who enjoy working with their hands and want to explore something new. Our instructors will guide you as you turn your project ideas into one-of-a-kind completed works of functional, decorative or fine art.

Make new friends while learning embroidery with a contemporary spin. Each week practice stitches such as the chain stitch, bullion knot and turkey work onto a custom sampler designed and printed by the teaching artist. Build layers of thread onto your cloth, leaving with a finished sampler to show off your skills. Material fee includes all supplies.

The ultimate beginner quilt class!

Whether you’ve experimented with quilting on your own or just gazing at quilts on Pinterest, we’ll teach you how to make a simple, yet functional lap quilt. Give it your own flair by experimenting with color, pattern and geometry. You’ll work through designing, piecing and finishing processes. No materials needed on the first day.

Around us, there are various flowers, tree barks, and fruits, that can be used as natural dyes. Experience this incredible process through various methods of natural dyeing including indigo, marigold and other materials.

Experiment with Shibori (including stitching, pleating, twisting), overdyeing techniques and mordants to create a spectrum of colors. You provide fabrics after the first week.

Getting To Lillstreet We are located on the northeast corner of Montrose and Ravenswood.

Public Transportation: Take the CTA Brown Line to Montrose, or use Montrose Bus #78. The Metra Union Pacific North line Ravenswood stop is located four blocks north of Lillstreet.

Car: We are three blocks west of Ashland and four blocks east of Damen.

Refund Policy For Dropped Classes: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
