Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-ofthe-art equipment during our generous, free open studio hours.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess, and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Form Focus: Cups 5 Weeks Learn the ins and outs of creating mugs, tumblers and cups of all shapes and sizes. We will cover techniques such as throwing off the hump as well as a variety of surface decorations.

Form Focus: The Skull 10 Weeks

Explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature. You’ll learn about the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. There will be class discussions on surface treatment for sculpture. All levels welcome

A thing of legends and curses, the human skull is the foundation of a portrait. In the first five weeks of class, learn the fundamentals of sculpting a human skull. In the second five weeks, we’ll work from a live model to build a face around your existing work or sculpt a new portrait. Surface treatments and finishing techniques will be discussed.

Explore personal stories, dreams and myths in hand-built clay forms. You will learn to form, texture and finish work — bringing your ideas to life. Each class includes time for you to share insights, inspirations or ask questions. In the final session, we will view and discuss everyone’s work in terms of the dreams, myths or stories expressed.

Imagination flows as you create abstract, realistic and anthropomorphic sculptures. You may choose to articulate your figures through the application of kinetic elements to create a doll.

Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. We’ll teach you how to build up and carve into clay, then make a plaster mold from your tile to make multiples. Firing and glazing will be discussed. All levels welcome

Examine various hand-building processes for constructing boxes. You will start by learning simple slab building techniques. You’ll progress to alternative methods and themes as well as traditional and alternative surface treatments.

Visiting local areas, we’ll collect clay and learn processing methods (including cleaning and sieving) to prepare it for use. Then we’ll use the clay to make small pots, test, and make slips/ stains/glazes. There will be discussion of clay origins, glaze technology, and a review of results. Prerequisite: One handbuilding or wheelthrowing class

Advanced Topics in Atmosphere: Woodfiring

Ceramics

10 Weeks Get ready for the big burn! In this class, you’ll create work specifically for a session-end firing in Justin Rothshank’s wood-fueled anagama kiln. This is a rare, hands-on opportunity to learn about, and participate in, one the world’s oldest continuing firing traditions. Students will be required to participate in at least one 6-hour firing shift in Goshen, IN during the firing in early November. A Potter’s Class 10 Weeks Using Clary Illian’s classic text, A Potter’s Workbook, as a guide, we will study forms ranging from cylinders to teapots. Each week we will review a subject in her book then refine our skills with a short exercise. Exercises will last no more than an hour — allowing time to apply new ideas and fresh techniques to your favorite work. Prerequisite: One year of wheelthrowing

Take a step back to reflect upon your throwing technique. You’ll be guided through a number of exercises to help refine your methods at the wheel. Basic functional forms and glazing techniques will be addressed.

Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. Using slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and understandable. You will participate in all stages of the process, including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time.

Create landscape paintings from photographs and your imagination, and you’ll gain an understanding of the benefits and challenges of photo reference. We will discuss the best way to gather reference photos, and how to modify your painting for success. Composition, value, and color principles will be discussed as we bring together an effective landscape. We’ll also consider how light reveals form and how to accentuate that.

Learn the history and fundamentals of traditional dip pen calligraphy. Using a variety of tools and materials, explore and practice several styles of alphabets and lettering and discover what works best for you. Styles such as copperplate, blackletter and italic are a few that will be discussed. Material list provided online.

Focusing on a new still life each session, emphasis will be on composition, color and the importance of equal attention to background and foreground. Within the group setting, there will be a focus on the level and interest of each individual. Through group discussion and evaluation, we will build common vocabulary and explore a variety of styles and methods.

5 Weeks Steel is a lightweight, alternative material to use for making jewelry and small sculpture. Fabrication techniques such as soldering and joining steel to other light metals, hollow construction, shallow forming, chain making and various patinas and finishing techniques will be discussed.

Metalsmithing I 10 Weeks Design and create jewelry and small sculptures in silver, copper and brass. Learn basic skills such as sawing, texturing, soldering and polishing. Copper Electroforming

5 Weeks Develop familiarity with the tools, materials and basic techniques for fusing glass. Learn to properly cut, design and layout glass to create jewelry, accessories or small trays. Material fee includes kiln firings, clear, white and black glass along with a variety of scrap glass, frit and stringers.

5 Weeks Electroforming is a metal plating process that slowly deposits copper on to the surface of your work to create more density and support. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll start by exploring a variety of processes of plating on copper foils, waxes and plastics. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll then move to more complex processes that relate to particular interests, like jewelry making and sculpture.

2 Days Get a jump on your holiday decorating and learn to construct a Gingerbread house made with glass. You’ll start with design, cutting techniques and decorations, to prepare for firing. After the magic happens in the kiln, you’ll assemble your creations and embellish with the trimmings of your choice. Light your house for extra flair! No experience necessary, but previous cake decorating or glass cutting experience helpful. One gingerbread house per registration. All around us certain flowers, tree barks, and fruits can be used as natural dyes. Experience this incredible process through various methods of natural dyeing including indigo, marigold and other materials. We’ll experiment with Shibori (including stitching, pleating, twisting), over-dyeing techniques and mordants to create a spectrum of colors. You provide fabrics after the first week.

It’s an ever-changing, mass-produced world, and textile practices can help us slow down and focus on handwork and sustainable methods. Draft Your Own Skirt Pattern 5 Weeks Drafting patterns from your own measurements is a great way to build a well-fitting wardrobe and skirts are a great place to start! In this class you’ll draft a pencil skirt and two a-line skirts (a fuller version and a more tailored version), complete with waistband, facing, or yoke. You’ll also learn to add pockets! No materials needed on the first day of class. Prerequisite: Two department sewing classes or similar experience

Sew Your Own Underwear 5 Weeks Whether you’ve run out of clean laundry or you just can’t find anything that fits right, join us and learn how to make your own underwear. It’s easier than you think! You’ll use sergers and the home sewing machines to create custom underwear in a variety of styles. Materials provided on the first day. Prerequisite: Two department sewing classes or similar experience

Sew Your Own Bra 5 Weeks Learn to construct your very own bra. Work with the instructor to find your proper measurements and choose from a variety of styles and commercial patterns to make the bra that will be a perfect fit. Embroidery II: Independent Projects and More 5 Weeks You’ve got the basic stitches down, and now you’re ready to start on a larger project. Surface Design II: Resists and Discharge 5 Weeks Eager for the next level of surface design? Resists (areas of fabric blocked from dye) and discharge (removing color) can add depth and dimension to your fabrics. Students will work with water soluble resists applied to fabric at various stages of printing. Then we’ll move on to strategically remove color from dyed fabric. Some materials provided. Prerequisite: Screen Printing with Dye

Indigo Extravaganza 1 Day Explore the history and techniques of indigo dye. We will apply shibori resist techniques to silk and cotton, learn how to build an indigo bath, and see visual resources and samples of this exceptional dye. A serger is not only used to professionally finish your seam allowances, it’s also necessary for sewing with stretch fabrics. In order to tackle projects like loungewear, athletic-wear and swimwear, you’ll need to learn the intricacies of this complicated machine. Machine threading, manipulating and troubleshooting will be discussed. This is a great option for independent students hoping to expand their practice.

Turn the linear quality of yarn into three-dimensional forms by wrapping, looping, cutting and trimming. Learn the intuitive basics of tassels, pom poms, and cording that you can turn into jewelry, home decor and ornamentation on future projects. They also make great cat toys!

Young artists become explorers as they investigate a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by talented teaching artists.

Ages 3-5 Children enjoy these classes on their own, however parents may stay for the first class. Classes are limited to 12 children. Students must be potty trained and currently in Pre-school.

Mixed Media Exploration 5 Weeks In this skill-building class students will be introduced to new art materials, tools, and the work of an artist each week. Students will learn at least three specific ways to use the tools to alter and manipulate the material, and then use their new skills to follow their imaginations by creating their own unique artwork. Students will use clay, paint, paper, and fabric, and other media.

5 Weeks For kids who love play dough, here’s the chance to make with real clay. This class is a great opportunity to try your hands at clay. We’ll spend time learning the basic techniques of handbuilding, then practice making pottery on the wheel. The combination of techniques will prepare you to make great pots and unique sculptures.

Create cool metal jewelry or small sculpture out of brass and copper sheet & wire. You will learn various skills such as piercing, forming, texturing and soldering, leading to the creation of your own designs.

1 Day Why stay at home when you can have fun with us making art? Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, and commemorate our shared history and culture creating artful tributes in our kid’s studios. Campers will spend the day painting, drawing, printing, learn to build with clay, and sculpting colorful works of art.

Ages 5-18 These workshops are a wonderful opportunity to work together on themed projects designed to bring laughter, smiles and art into your life. All workshops are two hours long, and children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Pizza Plushie 1 Day It’s comfort food at its best! Learn to design and hand sew your very own plushie pizza — made to order. Choose your favorite toppings and sauce, and together we’ll design and embellish our adorably fun-loving, stuffed pizza slice.

Coil Pot Planter

Ages 5-8

Make your plants a cozy home for the cooler months! Learn to hand build a terra cotta planter for your favorite flower, plant or succulent. Gain skills in basic coil building techniques, then glaze your planter in bright autumn colors and designs to celebrate the season.

Learn to roll clay slabs, decorate the surface with patterns and textures and finish it off with colorful glazes to create a unique mug. Once it’s fired, you can put your favorite warm drink in just in time for the cold weather!

Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required.

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward classes and workshops. Credits are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

Refund Policy For Dropped Classes: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
