LILLSTREET’S LONG-ESTABLISHED CERAMICS DEPARTMENT offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture and more. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-ofthe-art equipment during our generous, free open studio hours.

Beginning/Advanced Beginning Handbuilding

Beginner/ Advanced Beginner

5 Weeks Whether your aim is functional or sculptural ceramics, learn the basic techniques of handbuilding as you work with slabs, coils and pinching to create virtually anything you can dream up. Use of tools such as molds, slab roller and extruder will be demonstrated. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

4 or 5 Weeks Dress for mess, and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

Small Sculptures, Figurines & Dolls 5 Weeks Imagination flows as you create figurative, abstract, anthropomorphic or animal sculptures. Exploring a variety of hand building techniques you may also choose to articulate your figures to create a moving doll. Improve your throwing skills by focusing on a specific form to learn to throw beautiful, elegant, and larger bowls. Explore a variety of shapes and finishes to serve specific functions around the home.

Learn to transfer an image and the various ways to model it in low relief. Choose an image of your choice such as a repeating pattern or portrait from which to make a simple plaster press mold of the tile.

Sculpt and Design 5 Weeks Explore the intersection of sculpture and utility within your process as a maker. Through exercises and discussions, learn to develop not only the object but the idea behind it. Prerequisite: Two beginner-level handbuilding classes

Form Focus: Bottles 5 Weeks The bottle form challenges the wheel thrower technically and aesthetically. This class will push the student’s throwing skills and help develop the eye for proportion. Form Focus: Hand Built Cups

Get back to basics in this class, and learn the ins and outs of hand building cups and mugs. Each class will focus on using a different, established ceramic artist’s handbuilt cup and the techniques used to make it. You will learn through constructing with intention how to recreate cups and mugs to strengthen your own building process.

Print repeatable images on greenware or leather-hard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Use paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly to clay at many stages using special oil-based inks. Learn surface design techniques that can be adapted for wheel-thrown or hand-built forms, for low or high fire clay bodies.

Form Focus: Handles 4 Weeks Learn the ins and outs of creating mugs, tumblers and cups of all shapes and sizes. We will cover techniques such as throwing off the hump as well as a variety of surface decorations. Prerequisite: Two beginner-level wheelthrowing classes

Slip Casting: Design a Cup 4 Weeks Design a cup for reproduction using plaster molds and casting slip. Using clay and plaster to develop a functional cup form we will refine and troubleshoot our designs so that we can make matching sets. Prerequisite: One year of handbuilding or wheelthrowing classes

Workshops Date Night: Throwdown

Holiday Mugs

Grab your sweetie, bestie or buddies for a Friday night “throwdown.” Join us for a fun evening of getting a little messy, and try your hands at wheelthrowing. Learn basic techniques, and throw as much clay as you can with the help of our skilled instructors. At night’s end, pick two pieces to have glazed. Each participant must register and pay the workshop fee. BYOB, Must be 21+ to consume alcohol.

Create your own functional mug to warm up those cold holiday nights with your favorite hot beverage. Working with stoneware slabs, you will construct your own mug and then use texture, decoration and carving techniques to make it your own functional piece of art. Choose your own color of glaze to finish the piece.

Lillstreet’s Digital Arts & Photography program offers artisttaught classes that cover topics from basic technical introduction to advanced creative projects. We engage in conversations surrounding contemporary digital media and facilitate students’ critical thinking skills when it comes to reading the image. Equipped with Adobe software, Epson printers, and a large lighting studio, we’re here to help you master the tools and concepts necessary to create meaningful images that stand out in a culture in which everyone has access to a camera.

Beginner/ Advanced Beginner Introduction to Studio Lighting 5 Weeks

First-Time Artist First-Time Digital Photography 4 and 5 Weeks This class is designed specifically for those who are brand new to digital photography. Get to know your DSLR with the help of an experienced instructor who will guide you through how your camera works and how to control its various exposure settings. Learn the functions of aperture, ISO and shutter speed while you explore the visual elements of image making. USB drive and camera with manual settings required, DSLR preferred.

This introductory course focuses on the technical aspects of studio equipment and different approaches to photographing in the studio. Steady lights, speedlights, strobes and reflectors will be discussed throughout this course; we’ll also study how to best utilize lighting for studio portraiture and still life photography. DSLR and basic knowledge of camera functions required. Prerequisite: First-Time Digital Photography or Fundamentals of Digital Photography I

Create landscape paintings from photographs and your imagination, and you’ll gain an understanding of the benefits and challenges of photo reference. We will discuss the best way to gather reference photos, and how to modify your painting for success. Composition, value and color principles will be discussed as we bring together an effective landscape. We’ll also consider how light reveals form and how to accentuate that.

Learn how to create dramatic blackand-white images using scratchboard. The board itself is a panel covered with a thin layer of white China clay, and then coated with black India ink. Scratching tools are used to scrape away the ink layer, revealing the white underneath. A great experiment for those with experience in pen and ink who wish to add to their toolbox, and those who are interested in the style of woodcuts, but without the printing process.

Learn the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Composition, color mixing, brush style, shape and form, light and value, paint application and layering will be explored. Students should have basic skills in painting and drawing. A watercolor kit and additional materials are available for purchase.

Your ideas become the subject of individualized instruction as you expand your skills as a painter. If you choose, a still life setup will be available each week to further develop your skills in representational painting. This is a class for students with previous painting experience.

5 Weeks EElectroforming is a metal plating process that slowly deposits copper on to the surface of your work to create more density and support. We’ll start by exploring a variety of processes of plating on copper foils, waxes and plastics. We’ll then move to more complex processes that relate to particular interests, like jewelry making and sculpture.

Working with Wax & Casting 5 Weeks Explore the three-dimensional possibilities of hard waxes for carving and soft waxes for modeling. You can expect to complete two small pieces, such as rings, charms or miniature sculptures. Two castings will be done in class, or waxes can be brought to a production caster for a nominal fee.

Faceted Stone Setting Theory & Applications: Round Stones

This workshop is open to adult and child pairs (e.g. parent/child, grandparent/grandchild). A registered adult may bring one child (age 10+), and together they can complete a shared gingerbread house. It is not necessary for the child to register separately, but must be noted at time of registration.

Seattle-based stone setter, Kirk Lang, will teach you how to set round faceted gemstones safely, securely and with confidence. Prong, flush, and heavy-walled bezel setting will be demonstrated. Our student population is diverse — from professional artists who sell at artisan fairs, online shops and consignment, to those who enjoy working with their hands and want to explore something new. Our instructors will guide you as you turn your project ideas into one-of-a-kind completed works of functional, decorative or fine art.

Make new friends while learning embroidery with a contemporary spin. Each week we’ll practice stitches such as chain stitch, French knots and turkey work on a custom sampler designed and printed by the teaching artist. Build layers of thread onto your cloth, leaving with a finished sampler to show off your skills. Material fee includes all supplies.

All it takes is a hook and a ball of yarn, and soon you’ll be crocheting your way to scarves, blankets and other cozy projects! Learn how to hold your hook and make a basic stitch. Young artists become explorers as they investigate a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by talented teaching artists.

Ages 3-5 Children enjoy these classes on their own, however parents may stay for the first class. Classes are limited to 12 children. Students must be potty trained before they can attend.

Mixed Media Exploration 4 Weeks In this class, children engage in the intuitive play of form and color through individual and group projects including mural painting, collage, handbuilding in clay and bookmaking.

A creative community for our youngest members: ages 1-4 years old. Lil’ Kidstreet inspires your child’s natural delight for song, rhythm, color and texture. We combine visual art and music to encourage developmentally appropriate learning through original songs, musical instruments, rhythm-based activities, paint, clay and collage. These classes are the first steps in the foundation of exploration, creativity and enthusiasm for art and music. Each class is 45 minutes and includes both music and art. A caregiver participates with the child in these classes. In order to provide the best quality time with your toddler, we ask that you refrain from bringing other children to class.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward classes and workshops. Credits are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

• Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Public Transportation: Take the CTA Brown Line to Montrose, or use Montrose Bus #78. The Metra Union Pacific North line Ravenswood stop is located four blocks north of Lillstreet.

Car: We are three blocks west of Ashland and four blocks east of Damen. On-street parking is available.

Refund Policy For Dropped Classes: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
