Entrance to the Mangroves: Flooding Prevention Center What’s the best way to prevent disaster? For the researchers in Cocoa Beach who specialize in flooding prevention, it’s with strategies that use nature’s strongest defenses. For them, the health of these ecosystems is vital for regulating natural flood barriers. The project proposes to turn the whole site into a place of firsthand research and observation of the lagoon. It uses gabion walls to purposely provide habitats. Researchers can monitor up close the interactions, impacts, and effects that these systems have on one another. This project’s goal, which is about advocating the causes, effects, and strategies, to prevent flooding, encourages people to take a closer look at the life around them.

Secret Places: Edible Food Garden From first glance, people don’t expect much from this part of town. Just from looking around, we can see its long history of racial and economic discrimination.

However, the Edible Food Garden encourages people to learn about the vibrant world around them, and the community center architecture reflects its missions. It encourages not just the former residents to take a chance to re-explore, but also those who are new to the area, and even those who might only be passing by. It rewards people who have taken the opportunity to discover the word around them on their own terms, despite what its outer appearance and surroundings may be. Not only does it surprise people with spaces where they least expect it, but it also asks them to question what else they may have missed that are right beneath them, and rethink what we know about people and communities that society say are beneath us too.

PI N K FACA DE S What began as a study of facades evolved into a question of the role colors play in architecture. Is there a rule that says we can’t use pink as a color to draw?

Is there a rule that says pink cannot be used because it won’t be as sophisticated as the conventional drawing?

Is there a rule that says we have to follow these rules?

Acting like facades themselves, these drawings are not about the building themselves but about challenging pre-conceived notions of “good” drawings and its limits.

Drone Outpost in Cocoa Beach Cocoa beach is a social scene, one that is shaped heavily by its environment. It brings in people during every season, and flooding and hurricanes are no exception. This is where the rangers of the drone center come in. Their mission is to plant mangroves to prevent flooding to the area, and the architecture supports this goal. The choice to have mangroves surround the architecture allows workers to monitor the health of mangrove seeds and allows the community to directly see their mutual relationship. Similar to the ranger’s effort, it takes patience for the spatial expereience to emerge. This project’s ideal is not to make any specific structure, or even landscape in cocoa beach permanent, but rather the understanding to those in the area that their connection with their natural surroundings have as much value as anything else, and that those relationships are the ones that have effect on them through the course of their lives.
