WELCOME TO LILIAS DAY 2016 We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in the community and beyond for their support and understanding after last year’s cancellation. We are determined that Lilias Day 2016 will be one for all to enjoy. This year we are delighted to bring you: LILIFEST An exciting programme of events and entertainment taking place in the village in the lead up to Lilias Day, including: The Book Launch of ‘Habbie to Jeely Eater’ – by the weel kent Habbie, Rev Iain Miller.

Music and beer festivals – hosted by the Glenleven and The Trust Inn. Kilbarchan Singers and Kilbarchan Junior Choir summer concert.

LILIAS DAY – SATURDAY 4 JUNE Lillias Day itself is packed full of entertainment including a battle re-enactment, a tug of war tournament, circus skills workshops, pony rides, archery, a medieval camp and music tent.

In the parade this year, characters such as Mary Barbour, William Brodie and the Statue of Liberty will be making their debut appearance, along with bands, vintage vehicles and a full complement of floats.

Our grand finale this year will again be the big prize raffle, when one lucky winner will leave the park £1000 richer. If you haven’t bought your tickets yet you can buy them at local shops throughout the village and on the day at the Lilias Day Committee stall.

As always we are delighted to have the support of the village, local organisations and businesses without whom Lilias Day would not happen. Each year the event raises tens of thousands of pounds for charities and good causes.

‘A WEAVER’S TALE’ ‘A Weaver’s Tale’ designed by local artist Kay Nicolson celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Kilbarchan’s weaving trade. At its peak there were over 800 handlooms set up in cottages. Weaving families produced Paisley shawls, tartan and muslin amongst other cloths to feed Scotland’s thriving textile market.

‘A Weaver’s Tale’ represents a woven shawl depicting Habbie Simpson, The Piper of Kilbarchan. Habbie, who lived in Kilbarchan in the late 16th century, was famed for his musical talent and outstanding personality. He is piping a melody for Miss Lilias, daughter of the Baron William Cuninghame, who named the annual Lilias Day Festival in her honour.

Artist Kay Nicolson began her career studying textile design at Gray’s School Of Art. After many years of working in retail, soft furnishings and teaching, she has returned to her first love of art and now has a thriving cottage industry producing beautiful art prints.

THE SCHOOL QUEEN GROUP Every year the most senior pupils in Kilbarchan Primary School elect a School Queen and Attendants to represent the school at Lilias Day. There is much excitement and anticipation as the votes are counted and results announced.

The group takes a leading role in the parade and Miss Lilias crowns the School Queen as the parade arrives in the park.

The School Queen this year is Emily Duff and her Attendants are Amy McGreish and Abby McLaughlin. The Crown Bearer is Jack McKellar and the Footman is David Naismith.

Last year’s winners, the Gallacher family (pictured), were delighted to be able to put their winnings towards their upcoming wedding. Mr Gallacher said: “It was wonderful to win such a fantastic prize to put towards the cost of our wedding. We were happy to buy our tickets to support Lilias Day and it was an amazing surprise to actually win” Don’t forget to buy your tickets. The prize draw will take place at 4.30pm in the park on Lilias Day.

GET INVOLVED There are still plenty ways to get involved in Lilias Day. You can decorate your house or premises to compete for the coveted title of best decorated house.

HISTORY OF LILIAS DAY A summer fair has been part of the history of Kilbarchan since the latter part of the 17th century, and maybe even earlier.

Tradition links the summer fair held on Lilias Day to Lilias Cuninghame (1691 – 1720), the daughter of the 8th Baron Cuninghame of Craigends. Many of the customs introduced 300 years ago are still part of today’s celebrations.

As far back as 1718 a parade through the village was the focal point of the fair.

“Tradesmen went through the town in grand procession with drums beating, colours flying, music playing and garlands, swords etc.”

Floral arches were also erected throughout the village with streets competing for the best arch. Weavers would down tools and spend days decorating the arches with heathers and flowers.

In 1876 another familiar feature was introduced to the Lilias Day celebration where villagers were invited to decorate their houses. These traditions continue today with the same friendly rivalry to see who can create the best float or win the coveted title of best­decorated house.

To this day, Lilias Day remains the annual highlight of village life.

THE HISTORIC PARADE

The historic parade lies at the heart of Lilias Day and celebrates the rich history of the village. From pre-Christian times through to modern day Kilbarchan, the costumed character groups represent the history of the village through the centuries.

The first group in the historic parade to represent Kilbarchan’s history is the Chief Druid and his maiden followers. Before Christianity came to Scotland, the people of the land followed pagan rituals and beliefs held by the Druids.

The Town Crier heads the procession. From as early as the middle ages a formal system of town criers was recognised in Britain as a way of communicating news and important events to the people.

Following the Town Crier, comes The Preses and representatives of the General Society. Kilbarchan General Society was founded in 1765 by “24 heritors, merchants and tradesman of the village” to improve the welfare of villagers in a period of expansion. This benevolent society still exists in the village today, and this year celebrates its 250th anniversary.

The Preses is Norman Kerr.

The arrival of Saint Barchan and his Monks in the latter part of the sixth century marks the conversion of the people from paganism to Christianity. St Barchan was a Celtic preacher from Ireland and was said to be a humble man and true follower of Jesus. It is reputed that he established a church here and that the name of the village derives from this – ‘Kil’ meaning cell or church and the Saint’s name – the church of St Barchan.

Princess Marjory Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce, and her riding party, often hunted in the area and received hospitality from the people of Kilbarchan. A year after her marriage to Robert Steward in 1315 , at the age of 20, she was critically injured after a fall from her horse and was taken to Paisley Abbey where the monks cared for her. Pregnant at the time, her baby son, who became Robert II, was delivered by caesarean section. Whether this operation occurred before or just after her death remains unknown. Her remains are interred in Paisley Abbey.

This year marks the 700th anniversary of her death.

Another famous character to join the parade this year is William Wallace. Born circa 1270, in Elderslie, William Wallace was the son of a Scottish landowner.

He spearheaded his country’s long charge against the English toward freedom, and his martyrdom paved the way for eventual success

During the 15th and 16th centuries the Cuninghames of Craigends and the Craufurds of Auchinames were important feudal land owners in the parish of Kilbarchan.

The Cuninghames of Craigends have for centuries been closely connected with Kilbarchan. The 1st Baron William Cuninghame became the proprietor of Craigends in 1497 and was an important person in the area. He was one of the oversmen called to settle a dispute between the Burgh of Renfrew and Paisley Abbey in 1488, held several public appointments, and was involved in the arrangements for the visit of King James the IV to the Highlands.

Thomas Craufurd lived in the Castle of Auchinames during the 15th century.

He was descended from Sir Reginald Craufurd of Crosbie who was awarded the Barony of Auchinames for his support and service to Robert the Bruce in the Battle of Bannockburn. Thomas Craufurd founded and endowed the Chapel of St Catherine to the village.

The ruins of this can still be seen in the West Parish Church graveyard. A farmhouse on the outskirts of the village occupies the site where the Castle of Auchinames once stood.

One of Kilbarchan’s most famous residents comes next in the parade. Born in the 1550s, Habbie Simpson was the village butcher but was more famously known for his piping. He was renowned for being a talented entertainer and was much sought after to perform at plays, feasts, races and fairs throughout lowland Scotland. His fame lives on today as inhabitants of Kilbarchan continue to be known as ‘Habbies.

Each year, Habbie is ‘brought back to life’ from his statue in the Steeple to entertain the villagers once again. Playing his pipes, he comes out from the Steeple and joins his wife Janet Simpson and the villagers.

He returns to stone for another year at the end of day’s celebrations.

From the early 1700s, handloom weaving grew to become one of the main trades in the village. Over the next two centuries the weaving industry in the village flourished from a handful of weavers producing fine linens, to over 800 handloom weavers living and working in the village.

Kilbarchan became widely renowned for its high quality wools and tartans at the height of weaving period in the late nineteenth century.

The history of any Scots village wouldn’t be complete without Mary Queen of Scots.

Born in 1542, daughter of James V, Mary became Queen when she was only seven days old. Mary did not have an easy reign as the country was in religious turmoil at the time, but she was a good ruler and allowed people to worship as they wished. Queen Elizabeth I plotted against her and Mary was executed in Fotheringay Castle in 1587.

Next in the parade comes Miss Lilias, the Baron and Baroness Cuninghame and her Attendants. They travel in a horse drawn carriages in the parade to mark their status in village life. Miss Lilias was the daughter of the 8th Baron Cuninghame of Craigends. He became tenant-in-chief of the village when the village was made Burgh of Barony. Over time the summer fair became known as Lilias Day after his daughter, Lilias.

Each year, a young lady from the village is selected to play the part of Miss Lilias, one of the most important roles of the day.

In 1697, Renfrewshire was gripped by a Witch Hunt which saw over 20 people accused of witchcraft and seven people executed on 10 June 1697.

During the time of the witch hunts, 10 year old Robert Semple was staying with his uncle, Sir William Pollock of Pollock House. Robert wanted to go to Paisley to see the burning of the witches but was told no and his shoes were taken from him to prevent him from going. So desperate was he to go that he sneaked out and walked 8 miles, barefooted to Paisley, to watch the witches burn.

Robert Semple moved to Kilbarchan in the late 1700s and built Belltrees Cottage (which still stands today, opposite the Co-op).

He lived there for the rest of his life until the age of 102, hence why villagers for two or three generations could say “I knew a man, who knew a man who saw the last witch burned in Paisley�.

A Victorian Wedding was a special occasion and an opportunity for villagers to dress up in their finest clothes and take a break from their looms.

The late 19th century and into the early 20th century saw a few notable people from Kilbarchan making their mark on the world.

Mary Barbour (22 February 1875 – 2 April 1958) was a Scottish political activist, community leader and social policy pioneer. She was one of the first female councillors to be voted onto Glasgow City Council and was appointed as one of the first woman Baillies and magistrates in Glasgow.

She was born in Kilbarchan, but moved to Elderslie in 1887, where she worked as a thread twister, eventually becoming a carpet printer.

She married David Barbour in 1896 and the couple settled in Govan.

Her political activism began in earnest during the Glasgow rent strikes of 1915. Unscrupulous landlords took advantage of the men being away at war and raised rents. The women, led by Mary Barbour, organised tenant committees and eviction resistance, leading to strike action which forced landlords to lower rents.

In 2015 a commemorative stone cairn in honour of the pioneering community activist was unveiled in the village.

William Brodie was the Grand Master of Masons in the state of New York.

In 1884 he had the privilege of laying the foundation stone of one of the most famous statues in the world, the Statue of Liberty.

Brodie was born in Kilbarchan, August 9, 1841 and his parents were thought to run a tavern on Church Street. When he was two years old his parents emigrated to America to begin a new life. They settled in the State of New York where William trained as a stone mason and became a successful businessman.

In his later life, William returned briefly to Kilbarchan before returning to the US where he died in 1917.

LILIAS DAY FUN FAMILY DOG SHOW Fun Classes open to all dogs Our Fun Family Dog Show is a great event for you, your family and of course your wonderful dogs. Offering great prizes, but above all else FUN for all the family.

Registration for classes will begin from 12 noon with classes commencing at 2pm.

Class timings may be subject to variation but we will endeavour to adhere to the timings as closely as possible.

Entry is £1.50 per dog for every class (proceeds to SSPCA) Rosettes and Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place and all entries will receive a treat bag.
