The Arjeplog Times

Your weekly paper with news, views & interviews. Since 90/91. 19th season.

Welcome back to Lapland! Every year when car testers return they ask, “What’s new in Arjeplog?” This year there are quite a lot of changes that affect car testers as well as locals. First of all, we have a new mayor, Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson. Former mayor, Bengt-Urban Fransson now writes editorials for one of the newspapers in Norrbotten. Britta will be writing a column in The Arjeplog Times and in the next issue we will give an in-depth introduction of the woman who now ‘runs’ Arjeplog.

Claudia Barros from Brazil loved visiting Lapland! Here she is on a snow-mobile in Arjeplog.

Many businesses have changed hands and new ones started. There are new restaurants and changes within restaurants and shops. Here is a list: • A new shoe shop called Skoaffär’n was recently opened on the main street (Storgatan) and is owned and run by Linda Westerlund. • Eva’s Optik has closed down as Eva, the optician, retired and now lives in Jäckvik. • Anna Karin sold her Arjeplogs Husuthyrning business to Sofia Holmner, who took over the renting out of private houses and apartments and is still in the same building. Anna Karin is now studying. • The hardware shop, Järnia, Granns has been extended and worth a visit. • ICA supermarket bakes bread and pastries on the premises and you

cannot miss the wonderful smell as you walk into the shop. • Karim is back at Mathörnan (he was at Stalo in Arvidsjaur last season). The à la carte restaurant at the back of Mathörnan has been re-decorated in an oriental theme. There are changes in the menu and the self-service lunch area is now more practical. • Frasses, that burnt down in March last year is still being re-built. The new owner, Thair, who ran Pizzeria Verona a few years ago, is making two rest aurants under one roof: Frasses and Harrys, a pub/restaurant. They have been building and fixing for many months and plan to open soon. • Pizzeria Verona also has a new owner and they have put up two big screen TVs in the restaurant where they show all the sports channels.

• Hornavan Hotell has a new chef in the restaurant. • There will be no ‘After Work’ evenings at Kraja this year and at the end of February Silverhatten is planning a celebration for its 40th anniversary. • The Silver Museum will also be open on Sundays 16-18 during the season, instead of Tuesday evenings (as was the case during the last winter seasons). • You can read Sweden’s news in English directly from our website. The link is: www.thelocal.se. In the coming issues of The Arjeplog Times we will report in detail about all the new things in Arjeplog as well as things in Arvidsjaur. Welcome back to a new year!
