How strong is your emergency fund?

ou can’t predict financial emergencies — but you can prepare for them.

To do that, you can build an emergency fund to pay for unexpected expenses, some of which may be sizable. Without one, you might be forced to dip into your investments, possibly including your retirement accounts, such as your IRA or 401(k). If this happens, you might have to pay taxes and penalties, and you’d be withdrawing dollars that could otherwise be growing over time to help pay for

In thinking about such a fund, consider

•How much should I save? The size of your emergency fund should be based on several factors, including your income, your spouse’s income and your cost of living. However, for most people in their working years, three to six months of total expenses is adequate. Once you’re retired, though, you may want to keep up to a year’s worth of expenses in your emergency fund — because you don’t want to be forced to cash out investments when their price may be down, and you may not be replenishing these accounts any longer.

•How can I build an emergency fund? Given all your normal expenses — mortgage, utilities, food, transportation and others — you might find it challenging to set aside some extra money in an emergency fund. But you do have opportunities. If you’re working, you could set up a direct deposit so that part of your paycheck goes directly into your emergency fund. You could also save a portion of any extra income you receive, such as bonuses and tax refunds.

•Where should I keep the money? An emergency fund has two key requirements: You need to be able to access the money immediately, and you need to count on a certain amount being available. So, it’s a good idea to keep your emergency fund in a liquid, low-risk account that offers protection of principal. For this fund, you’re less interested in growth than you are in stability. But because interest rates have recently changed, you may be able to get a reasonable return without sacrificing liquidity or safety.

•What types of emergencies should I prepare for? Your emergency fund could be needed for any number of events: a job loss or early retirement, housing or auto repairs, unreimbursed medical bills, unexpected travel, and so on. But this fund may also be needed to help you cope with other threats. Consider this: In 2023, the U.S. saw a record 28 weather and climate disasters, each of which resulted in at least $1 billion in damages — and often many times this amount — according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Depending on where you live, your home or business may be susceptible to tornadoes, floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and extreme heat and cold waves. These events can, and do, result in property repair and relocation costs, higher insurance premiums and even price increases for basic goods, such as groceries and prescription medications.

One final word about an emergency fund: It takes discipline to maintain it and to avoid tapping into it for everyday expenses or impulse purchases. The name says it all — this is a fund that should only be used for emergencies. By keeping it intact until it’s truly needed, you can help yourself weather many of the storms that may come your way.

ohn Hennessy took on the role of CEO of Bonner General Health (BGH) in December of 2023. He is a graduate of Gonzaga University, where he received a degree in finance, and Washington State University, where he received his master of health policy and administration. After receiving his MHPA, he spent 12 years in hospital chief financial roles and was CFO of BGH from 2014 until late 2019. At that time, John moved to Virginia and was the finance executive for a large hospital. In late 2021, he returned to BGH in the CFO role and was in that role until December 2023, when he transitioned to the CEO position.

Q.You served as Bonner General Health’s CFO for seven years prior to taking the position of CEO late last year. What does this position entail, and what is your goal / mission as CEO? What do you hope to accomplish?

A. The CEO position is responsible for the direction of the hospital and ensuring the hospital maintains quality care, meets its goals and remains financially viable. My goal in this role is to create an environment that operates efficiently, offers high-quality patient care, and benefits the community.

Q.Sheryl Rickard served as CEO for 19 years. How are you continuing the legacy she built during her tenure?

A. Sheryl has been my greatest mentor for the past 10 years. While she was CEO for 19 years at BGH, in total she worked in administration here for 37 years. With her leadership, dedication, compassion to staff and patients, and forward thinking, she positioned the hospital for continued success going forward. Sheryl committed her entire career to improving health care in Bonner County which is the legacy of hers I hope to continue.

Q.2024 marks the 75th anniversary of Bonner General Health. What does this milestone mean to you and the BGH family?

A. For 75 years, Bonner General Health has been a cornerstone of Bonner County, and it takes a lot to mean that much for a community. Our hospital campus has grown and changed over the years, but our commitment of providing high-quality health care to our community remains steadfast. This is truly a testament to our physicians, employees, board of directors and volunteers over the past 75 years that have made it their mission to provide excellent health care close to home. Our hospital is honored that we have been able to serve this wonderful community for so many years.

Q.How has Bonner General Health grown / expanded over the years, and what are the range of services BGH can provide the community today?

A. The hospital has grown and evolved significantly over the past 75 years, as can be imagined. Even going back 25 years, at that time, nearly 75 percent of our business was done on the inpatient side. In the simplest terms, these are patients admitted to the hospital to stay overnight, whether briefly or for an extended period of time. Fast forward to today, and nearly 90 percent of our business is done on the outpatient side, in which the service or treatment doesn’t require hospitalization. With this shift over the years from inpatient care to outpatient care,

the hospital has expanded its outpatient offerings significantly and now operates a vast array of clinics including orthopedics, immediate care, family practice, internal medicine, ophthalmology, women’s health, and behavioral health. Today BGH has 454 employees.

Q.What is most rewarding to you about the work you do?

A. The greatest reward of this position, and really working in rural health care, is the opportunity to improve the lives of family, friends and neighbors. Being able to make a positive impact on the people I interact with on a regular basis is something that is very rewarding. Having the opportunity to hear from community members regularly about how the hospital had a positive impact on their life brings great joy.

Q.In addition to your role as CEO, what other organizations are you involved with / support / give back to?

A. Currently I sit on the board of directors for Yellowstone Insurance Exchange, Idaho Hospital Association Healthcare Business Ventures, and the Northwest Hospital Alliance. In addition to board roles, I also volunteer at local events and fundraisers that benefit the Bonner County community.

Q.What do you enjoy most about being a part of the local community / business community?

A.What I enjoy most is the amazing people. I honestly believe there is no better community than what we have here. The people and businesses are all very supportive of one another and are always giving back through various means, whether it be donating their time or through financial means.

Q.Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers not mentioned above?

A. On behalf of all those who have served at Bonner General Health, past and present, we are very appreciative and thankful for our community's support of our hometown hospital for these past 75 years. We are so grateful for the trust our community places with us, and we look forward to continuing to deliver on our promise to be our community's best partner in health for decades to come. Maintaining a lush, green lawn and vibrant garden during the hottest summer days can be challenging, but with the right strategies and a bit of dedication, you can ensure your outdoor space remains healthy and flourishing.

Watering wisely is crucial during the summer months. The optimal time to water your lawn and garden is early in the morning, allowing the moisture to penetrate deeply into the soil before the sun becomes too intense. This reduces evaporation and ensures that plants receive the hydration they need to withstand the heat. Instead of frequent shallow watering, aim for deep and infrequent sessions. This practice encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil, making plants more resilient to heat and drought. Generally, providing about an inch of water per week, either from rainfall or supplemental watering, is recommended. Utilizing drip irrigation systems and soaker hoses can also be highly efficient, delivering water directly to the soil and roots, minimizing evaporation and runoff. Drip irrigation is especially beneficial for vegetable gardens and flower beds, ensuring that plants receive consistent moisture without wasting water.

Mulching is another effective way to retain soil moisture. Applying a layer of organic mulch, such as straw, wood chips or shredded leaves, around your plants helps keep the soil cool, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature. This insulating layer reduces the need for frequent watering. For lawns, leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing can also help retain moisture. Known as grasscycling, this practice not only conserves water but also returns valuable nutrients to the soil, reducing the need for fertilizers.

Soil health is paramount for a thriving lawn and garden. Conducting a soil test before summer begins

provides valuable insights into your soil’s nutrient levels and pH balance. This allows you to make precise amendments, ensuring that your plants receive the right nutrients for optimal growth. Using organic fertilizers, such as compost, manure or fish emulsion, can improve soil structure and provide a slow-release source of nutrients, enhancing soil fertility and promoting healthy root development. However, avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to excessive growth, making plants more susceptible to heat stress. Use fertilizers sparingly and according to package instructions, focusing on balanced formulas that provide essential nutrients without promoting excessive top growth.

Proper mowing techniques are also essential for maintaining a healthy lawn. Set your mower blades higher during the summer months. Longer grass shades the soil, reducing evaporation and encouraging deeper root growth. A height of about three inches is ideal for most grass types during hot weather. Additionally, ensure your mower blades are sharp to make clean cuts. Dull blades tear the grass, causing stress and making it more vulnerable to disease and drought. Regularly sharpening your mower blades is crucial for maintaining a healthy lawn.

Smart plant selection can make a significant difference in how well your garden withstands the summer heat. Choosing drought-tolerant plants is a key strategy. Native plants and varieties adapted to your local climate are often more resilient to heat and require less water. Excellent drought-tolerant options include lavender, yarrow, sedum and succulents. Grouping plants with similar water needs together, a practice known as hydrozoning, ensures that each plant receives the appropriate amount of water without overwatering or underwatering. Hydrozoning also makes irrigation more efficient and easier to manage.

Providing shade and wind protection for your garden can also help maintain its health during hot weather. Consider using shade cloths or creating temporary shade structures for sensitive plants during the hottest parts of the day. Shade cloths can reduce the intensity of sunlight, preventing sunburn and reducing water loss. Planting windbreaks, such as hedges or using fencing, can protect your garden from drying winds. Wind can exacerbate water loss and stress plants, so providing a barrier helps maintain a more stable microclimate for your garden.

Regular monitoring and maintenance are vital for keeping your lawn and garden green and flourishing. Inspect your garden regularly for signs of stress, pests or disease. Early detection allows for timely intervention, preventing minor issues from becoming major problems. Prune dead or damaged plant material to encourage new growth and improve air circulation. Deadheading spent flowers also redirects the plant’s energy toward root and foliage development, keeping your garden looking tidy and vigorous. Weeds compete with your plants for water and nutrients, so keep your garden free of weeds by mulching, hand-pulling or using organic weed control methods. A weed-free garden ensures that your plants receive the resources they need to thrive.

Sustainable practices can also play a significant role in maintaining a green and flourishing garden during the summer. Collecting rainwater is an eco-friendly way to supplement your garden’s water needs. Set up rain barrels to capture runoff from your roof, providing a free and sustainable water source during dry periods. Consider incorporating xeriscaping principles into your garden design. This landscaping approach emphasizes water conservation through the use of drought-tolerant plants, efficient irrigation and soil improvement techniques. Xeriscaping can significantly reduce water usage while maintaining a beautiful and functional garden.

Founded by Ralph Alderman more than three decades ago, Sandpoint Garage Doors’ legacy lives on under new ownership.

Doug Gunter, who is a fourth-generation Sagle native, had a 17-year career with the telephone and internet company Ziply Fiber (previously Verizon and Frontier), where he held various positions as a lineman, service technician and cable splicer. He has been actively selling real estate since 2017 for Realty Plus Inc. here in Sandpoint.

After getting his feet wet in the world of real estate, he grew to like the idea of being a business owner. Around that time, his Uncle Ralph was selling his 30-year-old business, so Doug decided to research it further, and it seemed like a great fit. “I didn’t have experience in the garage door industry, but I knew I had the technical skills to pick it up quickly,” Doug reflects. “And I liked the thought of carrying on what my uncle had started.”

Angela Wanous grew up in Iowa and made the move to Sandpoint in 2011, where she took a position with Coldwater Creek. She has held various positions in merchandising throughout her career, including working for American Girl Place in Chicago, and Litehouse Foods in project and brand management. She also has a love for “all things home” and a passion for

interior design — which she has explored on the side for her friends and family.

Like Doug, Angela saw similar opportunities with Sandpoint Garage Doors. She had been equally intrigued by the thought of being a business owner and saw a lot of opportunities to take what Ralph had started and build on it.

Doug and Angela, along with their spouses (Kristine Gunter and Dan Wanous), purchased Sandpoint Garage Doors in May of 2022. Angela and Doug are also co-owners of Sagle Storage, an outdoor boat and RV storage facility, which they’ve owned with their spouses and Doug’s parents since 2020.

“We are carrying on what Ralph started and continuing to innovate and improve to take the business to the next level,” Angela explains. “Doug’s technical background and my business background have made a good pairing.”

At Sandpoint Garage Doors, they sell and install residential and commercial overhead doors, offer residential and commercial service, and are proud to offer a wide selection of quality doors, with options from six of the top garage door manufacturers. “We also have experienced installers who are committed

to quality work, with 17 years of combined experience between them,” Doug emphasizes. Angela adds, “Our sales staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and we get calls weekly with accolades for our lead service tech. People love him!”

What they find most rewarding as owners of Sandpoint Garage Doors is managing a team of people who go out and solve problems for customers and get their doors functioning, so they can go on with their daily lives and business. “We also love to help people realize their design ideas by providing beautiful curb appeal to their homes,” Angela smiles.

Doug and Angela are grateful to be a part of the Sandpoint business community, “fulfilling a need that most people have, while creating new relationships with customers every day,” Angela shares. “We also love being able to sponsor local organizations and events and give back to our community.”

Every Friday, now through August, the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum is offering their Historical Walking Tours. Partnering with the City of Sandpoint’s Arts, Culture & Historical Preservation Commission, and Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces Division, the tour features the core blocks of Sandpoint’s commercial downtown, highlighting many of the original brick buildings constructed in the early 1900s, as well as highlights the people, events and businesses of early Sandpoint. The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce will once again host their annual Beerfest. Matt McArthur was born and raised in Sandpoint and is fifth generation. After graduating from Sandpoint High School in 1994, he immediately enrolled at North Idaho College’s HVAC trade school, where he met his “now best friend and business partner” Tim McConnell. Prior to meeting each other, Tim, a graduate of Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Washington, joined the Air Force and became a fire truck mechanic stationed in Alaska and South Carolina. “We always knew we wanted to eventually make it back to the Pacific Northwest, and my wife and I moved to Sandpoint in 1992 after four years of service,” Tim reflects. After working at the local mill, Tim decided to pursue another trade, attending NIC’s HVAC program in Coeur d’Alene.

Both Matt and Tim have been in the business of HVAC for 30 years each! Today, they are the proud owners of High Mark Heating & Cooling, which they established on January 1, 2005, with 2025 to mark their 20th year in business!

“We’ve always enjoyed working with our hands,” Matt remarks. “I met an HVAC installer while working on my neighbor’s house when I was 12, working with him occasionally. It just clicked, and I stuck with it.” And for Tim, “I was inspired by the stability of the home comfort industry, as everyone will always need heating and cooling, coupled with my desire to provide a better service and better product.”

High Mark Heating & Cooling provides an array of services to residential and light commercial HVAC systems, including furnaces, heat pumps, ductless systems, hydronic radiant heat, and indoor airquality solutions such as humidifiers, whole home air purification systems, and HRVs (heat recovery ventilators). In addition, they purchased The Stove Corral in 2013, so they can also provide Bonner County with a wide variety of wood and gas heating appliance options, such as freestanding stoves and fireplaces, as well as pellet stoves.

“We are one of the few companies in Bonner County to offer 24/7 afterhours emergency services,” Tim adds. “When our customers need us the most, we will be there.”

What truly sets High Mark Heating & Cooling apart from the competition is their service. “We strive for excellence in our business by working hard to earn ‘high marks’ and the trust of our customers — whatever it takes! We value integrity, and our culture is really about treating our customers the way we would want to be treated,” Tim states. “Our customers actually are our friends and neighbors, and we pride ourselves on treating them like family.” Sometimes that means talking their customers out of a purchase they don’t need or would never see the payback on, or talking them into repairing a piece of equipment rather than going through the expense of replacing it when not necessary. Matt adds, “Our honesty may be a flaw to some business models, but we need to be able to look our customers in the eye because we will run into them at the grocery store, a restaurant, or a local event.”

Matt and Tim take pride in the fact that each and every one of their employees wants to leave their job being able to be proud of what they did. “Whether a technician or installer, they all set the bar high for themselves and take pride in their work,” Tim affirms.

When it comes to what these friends and business partners find most rewarding about the work they do, Matt shares, “Two things: Arriving to a problem and the problem is resolved when I’m done, and mentoring

people from all walks of life.” Tim continues, “When I talk to or see a customer years later, and they still want to thank me for the work we did. I also enjoy teaching employees that mistakes happen; when and how we handle them is what matters, because that’s how people learn and grow.”

When not serving their customers, Matt is devoted to his wife — his high school sweetheart — Alysha. They are fortunate to have raised their three children — now grown — right here in Sandpoint. As for Tim, “I married a Lewiston, Idaho, girl, Kathy, in 1990, and we’ve raised our two children here in Sandpoint.” Both Matt and Tim are grateful for the sense of community Sandpoint provides.

n the heat of summer, many families may stop to play in the fountains at the Jeff Jones Square Plaza. Many may not realize that the origins of the spurting water were historic. The fountain was originally the city’s water trough.

Back when the main transportation was horses, travelers would need to make a pit stop at the watering hole instead of gassing up at the service station like we do today. To have a public water trough back in the day was a necessity, especially for a proper town.

An accessible water trough and hitching post would increase homesteaders, but most of all, traders and farmers, which would benefit the building economy of the community.

A public water trough was the first request made by the agricultural committee to the chamber of commerce in the young and growing town of Sandpoint. Around 100 years ago, horses were enjoying the cool refreshing water, and today it is children that do.
