FINAN

CIAL FOCUS

How are your investments taxed? This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Ken Wood

A

s we begin the new year, you may be receiving various tax statements from your financial services provider—so it’s a good time to consider how your investments are taxed. This type of knowledge is useful when you’re doing your taxes, and, perhaps just as important, knowing the type of taxes you generate can help you evaluate your overall investment strategy. To understand the tax issues associated with investing, it’s important to understand that investments typically generate either capital gains or ordinary income. This distinction is meaningful because different tax rates may apply, and taxes may be due at different times.

Edward Jones: We get to know you first, then figure out how to help you reach your goals.

So, when do you pay either capital gains taxes or ordinary income taxes on your investments? You receive capital gains, and pay taxes on these gains, when you sell an investment that’s increased in value since you purchased it. Longterm capital gains (on investments held more than a year) are taxed at 0 percent, 15 percent and 20 percent, depending on your income. Also, qualified dividends—which represent most of the dividends paid by American companies to investors—are taxed at the same rates as longterm capital gains. (Keep in mind that you’ll be taxed on dividends even if you automatically reinvest them.) On the other hand, you pay ordinary income taxes on capital gains resulting from sales of appreciated assets you’ve held for one year or less. You also pay ordinary income taxes when you receive “ordinary” dividends, which are paid if you purchase shares of a company after the cutoff point for shareholders to be credited with a stock dividend (the ex-dividend date).

Because your ordinary income tax rate may be much higher than even the top long-term capital gains rate, you may be better off, from a tax standpoint, by focusing on investments that generate long-term capital gains. And the best strategy for doing just that is to buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. By doing so, you could also reduce the costs and fees associated with frequent buying and selling. The investment tax situation has another twist, though, because not all ordinary income is taxable—and if it is, it may not be taxable immediately. The most common example of this is tax-deferred accounts, such as a traditional IRA and 401(k). When you take money from these accounts, typically at retirement, you’ll pay taxes at your personal tax rate, but for the years and decades before then, your taxes were deferred, which meant these accounts could grow faster than ones on which you paid taxes every year. Consequently, it’s generally a good idea to regularly contribute to your taxadvantaged retirement accounts. Finally, some investments and investment accounts are tax free. Municipal bonds are free from federal income taxes, and often state income taxes too. And when you invest in a Roth IRA, your earnings can grow tax free if you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59 ½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. Ultimately, tax considerations probably shouldn’t be the key driver of your investment choices. Nonetheless, knowing the tax implications of your investments—specifically, what type of taxes they may generate and when these taxes will be due—can help you evaluate which investment choices are appropriate for your needs.

B

orn and raised in Sandpoint, Dr. Cameron VanDenBerg, a Palmer graduate and former Gonstead president, made the decision to move back to the area, after obtaining his doctorate degree, to serve his hometown community. Today, he is the proud owner of Intermountain Wellness, alongside co-owner Rylie Anderson, where they and their team share their passion for whole-body healing with each patient they serve.

"

WHAT SETS US APART IS THOROUGHNESS! WE BELIEVE IN QUALITY OVER QUANTITY!

Q. You opened Intermountain Family Chiropractic in 2019 and recently rebranded to Intermountain Wellness. Why the change? A. While obtaining my doctorate degree, we learned that chiropractic, nutrition, rehab/exercise therapy and massage can all play roles in ridding/reducing inflammation in the body, and by adding a "whole body" approach to care, patients can hold adjustments better and see a true benefit in day-to-day life. We know the spine is so important and that it controls and regulates everything in the human body. Chiropractic philosophy states that subluxations in the spine can be caused by the 3 Ts (Thoughts, Traumas and Toxins). Our additional forms of care we have added help to address the various "Ts/causes of subluxations," and we wanted our name to reflect our whole-body approach to wellness. Q. What inspired you to pursue this career path and use your knowledge to help others? A. I started receiving chiropractic care at 11 years old and grew up playing sports at an early age. I have always had a love for health and decided to go into the chiropractic profession in hopes of helping others the way that chiropractic helped me. Q. Please describe the services you now provide through Intermountain Wellness? A. The services currently offered at Intermountain Wellness include: Individualized Gonstead Chiropractic Care, Thorough Blood Analysis, Functional Nutrition/Weight Loss Program, Sports Rehab/Exercise Therapy, Neuropathy Treatment Program, and Massage Therapy. I specialize in Gonstead technique, pediatric care, and I’m certified by the International Board of Extremity Chiropractors. Gonstead chiropractic is the most detailed and analytical technique of care. Out of approximately 70,000 chiropractors in the US, only around 2,000 of them specialize in Gonstead technique. Of those, less than five reside in the state of Idaho. What sets Gonstead apart from other doctors of chiropractic is the thorough analysis performed on each patient every visit, and doctors can work to identify the specific joints that need adjusted/treated. Extremity adjustments such as wrists, knees, hips, ankles, elbows, shoulders, etc. are very helpful for many conditions as well. Our sports therapy/rehab services offered at Intermountain Wellness are so beneficial to our patients. Each patient performs a functional movement screening to assess body posture, muscle imbalances, specific movements/how you use your body to help determine what is tight and what needs strengthened. Each exercise or stretch is then tailored to that patient to improve their overall wellness, spine health and help them to move better overall. We also offer one-on-one personalized exercises with the guidance of our rehab specialist, and patients also have the option to learn these exercises and do them in the comfort of their own home. Our partner stretching is one of our most popular offerings and helps to increase mobility and decrease pain. Patients love to lay there and be stretched out, similar to a stretch lab, and be properly shown how to stretch at home. We love offering massage therapy at our clinic as another modality of care to benefit patients. We currently have a fantastic massage therapist on staff and would love to hire more to have a fully staffed massage schedule to accommodate all of the patients in need.

I have my master’s degree in nutrition, and I am joined by our on-staff nutritionist who specializes in functional and integrative nutrition. Our program includes a full blood panel along with detailed blood analysis that targets optional ranges of health, which allows for a more preventative approach to care instead of reactive. The panel can also test for things such as thyroid health, hormone levels, food sensitivity, inflammatory markers, gene testing and so much more! Our nutritionist then builds your nutrition/weight loss plan around the results of your blood and offers specialized meal plans and supplements tailored to your goals. The weight loss program utilizes tools such as natural drops and supplements to help your body in each phase of care, along with weekly in person meetings! We are with you every step of the way to help achieve your goals! Q. Can you share a bit about the Neuropathy Center of Idaho within Intermountain Wellness? A. Neuropathy Center of Idaho offers a neuropathy program that has been very successful! The program is utilized by thousands of doctors across the US to address the actual causes of neuropathy and help to reverse its effects. Our all-natural, noninvasive approach to care helps to heal the environment of the nerves, and patients have found a significant decrease in pain, numbness, and overall discomfort. We absolutely love helping neuropathy patients gain back quality of life and work toward becoming pain free! Q. What sets Intermountain Wellness apart from others who are in the similar field? A. What sets us apart is thoroughness! We believe in quality over quantity! Q. What do you enjoy most about having like-minded individuals and businesses in the community who also focus on natural healing in their own fields of expertise? A. We love building referral relationships with other business owners and growing and learning together to help best serve the community. Q. What is most rewarding to you about the work you do? A. Helping people to gain their quality of life back! Truly making a difference in people's lives and building friendships with so many patients. I love specializing in pediatric care and treating the whole family! One of the most cherished things in the office is getting the privilege of adjusting a mom throughout her entire pregnancy and then getting to meet and adjust the babies post birth! Q. What are your hopes for the future of Intermountain Wellness? A. We look forward to continuing to grow. And we are excited to add more modalities to benefit patients and expand our wellness center. Q. When not serving your patients, how do you like to spend your time? A. Rylie and I love being on the lake, snowboarding, golfing, and spending time with friends and family. WHERE MIRACLES, and Smiles, Flourish S H O W Y O U R S U P P O R T T O C R E AT I O N S , SANDPOINT’S ARTISTIC HUB FOR ALL AGES

C

reations was founded in 2010 through the desire of a mom’s heart to experience connection and community while raising a toddler. The founder of Creations, Shery Meekings, launched the nonprofit, fueled by a family crisis of taking care of her sick husband with her 2-year-old daughter in tow. "I needed someone to tell me it’s going to be okay. I needed community … community to help me ride through the life storm I was experiencing, except, I had nowhere to go with my little one in tow," Shery reflects. During her family challenge, Shery looked forward to a monthly program that met at a local church called MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). They offered fun activities for children while moms enjoyed a luncheon seminar together. "This program was such a gift to me,” she smiles. “My daughter loved interacting with other children, and I loved having adult conversations with other moms." Around the same time, Shery was introduced to the owner of the Cedar Street Bridge, who had recognized her artistic talent and asked her to help breathe new life into the building after Coldwater Creek exited. Shery created an art gallery on the second floor offering professional consigned ark work. Coincidently, around that same time, a mom of a 37-year-old with special needs approached Shery and asked her to host an art class for her son and 10 other classmates from Panhandle Special Needs Institute. "I agreed and hosted a class for them at the Cedar Street Bridge. To my surprise, they loved it! I figured if that class was successful, I should try a toddler class for the moms and preschoolers, so the following week I shared the idea at a MOPS meeting, and 32 moms and their kiddos showed up. They all breathed so much joy and laughter in the Cedar Street Bridge, it was changed forever, and so was I! Week after week, the moms kept coming, as well as the special needs guys.” It wasn’t long that Shery closed the art gallery and opened Creations on the lower level in 2010. “I drew a photograph of the blueprint God had given me for Creations: an indoor space for moms to bring their kids,

with a sailboat in the midst of a toddler's play area, an art space, and a treehouse somewhere in the midst of it all,” Shery vividly remembers. A few months later, “Captain Dan” happened to see the drawing, called Shery, and told her he would be delivering a boat for the kids. The next miracle came from Carpet One, who donated a thick squishy carpet under the boat. The miracles just kept coming, and Creations ended up moving to the back of the Cedar Street Bridge building and expanding to create an area to offer drop-in art, and a small shop with new and donated goods to pay for rent. This was just the beginning of Creations becoming a gathering hub for families and kids. Six years into launching Creations, it already had more than 30,000 people visiting it each year. This increase came along with the addition of becoming a 501c3, partnering with Experience Works (a job skill program) to host Creations’ art workshops, as well as adding supportive board members and a grant writer. In 2020, an amazing treehouse was added to their discovery play area, along with an art instructor and a variety of art workshops for all ages and stages in life. To answer the call to the influx of now over 40,000 people visiting, Creations enlarged its discovery play area in the back of the Cedar Street Bridge and a fully stocked art studio full of supplies for anyone interested in taking a dive into their creative side. In addition, Creations developed a free children’s lending library with story-time seating, a family game area that includes foosball, and a multi-use gathering space that makes way for a variety of meetings and parties. There are many STEM workshops offered each month and are available for all ages. (Upcoming workshops can be found on Creations’ Facebook page, Facebook.com/creationsforsandpointinc.) Creations continues to attract a greater number of visitors, which includes locals, children, moms, dads, teens, corporate groups, field trips, grief groups, recovery groups, special needs, court appointed,

LET’S COME TOGETHER AND MAKE ANOTHER MIRACLE HAPPEN. community service, church groups, book clubs, science clubs, veteran groups, retirement groups, family reunions, parties, and downtown events that use Creations to gather and connect. You name the gathering; Creations has probably provided the need somehow in their welcoming space! Though Creations has already begun expanding into the community using their art teachers and workshops to support local schools, foster care programs, and senior and teen centers, their next big step will be to execute their plan to build a science museum that provides hands-on learning through the help of partnering with local businesses and nonprofits. In addition, they hope to inspire other small towns to join the community gathering revolution of providing an indoor safe space for all to learn, play and create. After 14 years, this community hub has generated many connections that are bridging a way for Creations to help beyond the Cedar Street Bridge site. Creations is now using its art skills, supplies and workshops to go to businesses, nonprofits and schools in the community to help fill their need as well. All visitors and locals can come to Creations anytime and enjoy the Drop-in Art Studio Stem Discovery Play—stocked full of every kind of crafting tool to paint and create art—between 10am to 6pm, seven days a week. The Discovery Play center is the perfect place to learn and an outlet for the young ones to expend their energy. Creations provides space for other organizations to teach youth STEM workshops, including Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeepers, Suzuki Strings Music, 4-H, and more! For those interested in signing up for one of Creations’ wonderful workshops, like felting, you can do so at CreationsforSandpoint.org. These educational art classes are for both adults and youth through Creations’ Creative Hands Expand the Mind program. There are not many places in Sandpoint you can bring your kids to during the seven months of rainy and winter weather for educational fun. Creations answers the call to bring smiles and adventure back to a dreary day; a place for people to connect and bond, and where hearts open up. 2022 was the first year since its inception that Creations was presented with a financial challenge, which has led them to ask for the community’s help. Due to the increase in expenditures, they are soliciting donations from all those who have come to know, use and love Creations to help offset the costs, so Creations can continue serving at the bridge downtown. They are currently seeking 100 to 150 monthly donors (family members) at $10 to $25 per month to offset these increased expenditures. They’ve already secured 31 new family members and are hopeful others will want to join in the effort and contribute to equip Creations through its growth. Donations can be made through their website, CreationsforSandpoint.org. Let’s come together and make another miracle happen so Creations can continue the wonderful opportunities and experiences it’s provided to the community for years to come—and keep the community smiling.

Creations is now using its art skills, supplies and workshops to go to businesses, nonprofits and schools in the community to help fill their need as well.

I

Recognizing the pivotal role the kitchen plays in a home, savvy homeowners are increasingly investing in kitchen updates to not only enhance their living experience but also to significantly increase the overall value of their properties. One of the most impactful ways to elevate the value of your home is through a modern and functional kitchen design. Potential buyers are often drawn to a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that seamlessly blends style with practicality. Investing in quality materials can significantly impact the perceived value of your kitchen.

In addition to aesthetics, the functionality of the kitchen plays a crucial role in influencing potential buyers. Upgrading to energy-efficient appliances not only aligns with eco-conscious trends but also offers long-term cost savings—a compelling factor for many homebuyers. Smart appliances, equipped with the latest technology, are also gaining popularity, allowing homeowners to control and monitor kitchen activities remotely. These features not only make daily tasks more convenient but also add a touch of modern luxury. Beyond the visual and functional aspects, the layout of the kitchen is another critical consideration. Open-concept kitchens are increasingly sought after, as they create a seamless flow between the kitchen and adjacent living spaces. Knocking down walls to create a more open floor plan not only enhances the overall spatial experience but also makes the home feel larger and more inviting. A well-thought-out kitchen island

can serve as a focal point, offering additional storage, workspace, and a casual dining area. Investing in quality materials can significantly impact the perceived value of your kitchen. Hardwood or high-quality tile flooring, for instance, adds a touch of elegance and is more durable than other materials. Upgrading to custom cabinets with soft-close features not only improves functionality but also conveys a sense of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Natural stone countertops, such as granite or quartz, not only enhance the visual appeal but also offer durability and longevity, making them a worthwhile investment. The lighting in your kitchen can also be a game-changer. Ample and strategically placed lighting not only enhances the functionality of the space but also contributes to the overall atmosphere. STYLISH AND RELEVANT under-cabinet lighting for task areas, pendant lights above the kitchen island for a stylish focal point, and recessed lighting for general illumination. A well-lit kitchen not only looks more inviting but also makes it a more practical and enjoyable space for daily activities. Upgrading kitchen appliances goes beyond aesthetics and energy efficiency; it also involves embracing the latest technology trends. Smart home integration is becoming increasingly popular, with homeowners seeking appliances that can be controlled remotely or through voice commands. From smart refrigerators that can create shopping lists to automated coffee makers, these technological advancements not only add convenience but also appeal to the techsavvy homebuyer. When contemplating kitchen updates, it's essential to strike a balance between trendiness and timelessness. While incorporating the latest design trends can make your kitchen more appealing, it's crucial to choose elements that will stand the test of time. Neutral color palettes, classic materials and versatile layouts contribute to a kitchen that remains stylish and relevant for years to come. A well-designed and updated kitchen can significantly increase the value of your home. From aesthetic enhancements to functional upgrades, each element contributes to creating a space that not only appeals to potential buyers but also enhances your daily living experience. Be sure to seek out reputable contractors to transform your kitchen into a selling point that sets your home apart in the competitive real estate market.

Jackie Suarez REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? Happy New Year! Our local real estate market has emerged from 2023 with a bright outlook for 2024, recognizing that North Idaho still represents “greener pastures” for folks looking to relocate. With January’s sub-zero temperatures, our market has stayed in “hibernation mode”. Residential sales volume is down 49% compared to the previous 30-day period. Notably, 18% of home sales in the past 30 days were new construction in Sandpoint City, The Idaho Club and Schweitzer Mountain. This, coupled with Dover Bay sales resulted in a 10% increase in median sales price. Mortgage rates anticipated to go down this year are still in a freeze-thaw cycle. With the rising cost of nancing increases pressure on borrowers with marginal buying power, more sellers are nancing their property sales and reaping their gains in the form of interest over time. In the past 30 days in Bonner and Boundary Counties, 3% of home sales were owner- nanced and cash buyers accounted for 39% of residential sales.* Coming out of the holidays, the land market received an arctic blast, pushing sales volume down 49%. There’s always a winner in this environment, investors with ready cash skated to the nish line and purchased 63% of Bonner and Boundary County parcels sold in the past month.* The Schweitzer Mountain market is a urry of activity with 28% more residential units available over the past 30 days. Current offerings range in price from $315,000 for a 320 sq. ft. studio unit to $4,625,000 for a new four-bedroom home.* Is now the right time for you to buy or sell? Lower inventory translates into less competition for sellers and se serious buyers are looking for property in the winter. This may be the right time for you to recognize opportunity in our four-season market. Three tips for navigating this market: 1. Get advice from full-time real estate professionals who are experts in your local market. 2. Sellers: Price, timing and marketing are important. Focus on your presentation, be aware of other competing properties and be ready to negotiate. Monitor the market – owners with too much “blue sky” in their expectations might need to reconsider their approach. Bu 3. Buyers, get familiar with your target area and be ready to recognize a good buy. Make sure you’re on solid ground nancially. If you’re borrowing, have a lender with a proven track record working for you. Thoroughly inspect any property you decide to purchase.

Our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same - God, Family and Relationships. Best wishes to all for good health, peace and prosperity in the New Year! “Jackie Suarez was extremely knowledgeable about the Sandpoint and Dover area and provided excellent advice on price of sale as well as negotiating factors. She was polite, professional, forthcoming and responsive. Thanks, Jackie for a job well Done!” Dawn A., Dover

This Scope, in regard to colonoscopies, would help to detect early signs of Colon cancer, which ages 45 and older, both men and women, are advised to get. It will be utilized by Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Surgical as a valuable asset to our in-house capabilities. F

or more than two decades (since 2003), Angels Over Sandpoint has been presenting some of the best talent Sandpoint has to offer during its annual show—The Follies. “This is our 20th anniversary of a sold-out show,” smiles Kate McAlister, the producer of The Follies. “This funds the Angels Over Sandpoint to continue their great works in the community of helping those in need.” When it comes to what makes this an event one not to miss, Kate shares it’s the “laughter, the costumes, the fun of just letting go for a few short hours and enjoying life,” adding, “It is right at the time when we are all a little 'shacky wacky.’ It's not really winter, and it's not really spring; it's the in-between time when we need to get out of the house and let loose.” The Follies, which is a non-political “naughty” show not intended for the easily offended, highlights incredible local talent. “The talent on the stage is amazing, and first-time attendees are always amazed at what a great show it is,” Kate affirms. The Follies 20th Anniversary show takes place March 1 and 2 at

the historic Panida Theater. Tickets (450 available for each show) go on sale February 2 at EventBrite.com. Those who purchase VIP tickets get in 30 minutes early (at 6:30pm) to select their seat. General admission ticket holders (a limited number of tickets will also be available at Eichardt’s) will be let in at 7pm. The show begins promptly at 8pm, with this year’s theme “Circus.” Kate encourages you to purchase your ticket early, as they usually sell out within the first eight hours! Since 1997, Angels Over Sandpoint has raised more than $1.5 million and contributed money, time and a helping hand to hundreds of local people in need. The Follies has become their most popular fundraising event, with funds used to further Angels Over Sandpoint's mission. “I have been a member of the Angels for 25 of the 27 years, and I have loved every minute of it," Kate shares. "Our mission is 'to honor the memory of the angels who have gone before us by helping those in need in our community.' And we certainly live up to our mission." D

id you know that Bonner County has the longestrecorded ski hat in the world?!

In 1977, a man named Scott Hadley and a woman by the name of Ginny Woodward decided that this would be a perfect addition to the local Winter Carnival parade. Although they dreamed up the idea and set it into motion, the community brought it to life. For $2 you could buy a foot-long section with a name or

business knitted into it or $5 for a four one-foot repeat. With close to 550 advertising panels, the colorful knitted creation resulted in around 700 feet! The seaming of the hat took a whole day to do, and they almost missed the parade trying to turn it inside out. It was all worth it for our local "wonder of the world," which is now preserved at the Bonner County Museum.
