Hiking or biking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to get some exercise at the same time. Research different trails and find one that fits your comfort level and abilities. If you enjoy time on the water, try renting a kayak or stand-up paddle board. However you choose to spend your free time this summer, make it one to remember!

It’s Back!

But this time it’s painted BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER

S

o a couple years ago, I wrote about getting rid of the old yellowed-oak look of the 90s. Guess what? It’s back! No, no, not the yellowed look of the 90s, but oak is back—only this time, the updated oak look is a painted oak. Cabinet companies are starting to introduce this new painted look, but instead of a satin, smooth surface, designers are liking the textured wood-grain look with matte paint, which really highlights the oak graining of the wood. So, if you’ve been holding on to the oak cabinets in your house because you just didn’t know where to start with updating, now you have a starting point. However, you can’t just paint the oak cabinets you have and expect to have the same results. The wood graining on your existing cabinets is covered in polyurethane or lacquer, so if you paint that, and especially if you use a matte paint, it will highlight any uneven surfaces, and they will end up looking splotchy. Your cabinets will need to be sanded down, possibly wire

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

brushed to get the graining to stand up a bit, and then you can paint them to get that similar look that’s in style right now. Enlisting a professional painter is probably a must, but if you want to try it, start with the back of a cabinet door to see how good you can make it look before you take off all your doors and have a project you wish you would never have started. Matte is in. Even the countertop companies are doing matte finishes on most—if not all—of their countertops, and if they don’t offer it, the fabricators can change the texture from a high-gloss polished surface to a satin/leathered or honed/ matte finish with a special machining technique. The acrylic companies like Corian also offer a satin or matte finish, and laminates are starting to go that way, too. What does this mean? To me, it means that people must like cleaning off fingerprints. I would not use a matte countertop

Oak is back, baby! surface in my own house, but I also don’t like having to clean my countertops every five minutes. Matte finishes show any oil residues from cooking or even from your hands. If you set a cup of coffee on the counter, the matte finish will show the ring from your coffee mug long after the mug is in the dishwasher. Avoid going with too many matching surfaces. My recommendation is to mix textures. If you have matte cabinets, do a polished countertop. Let the polish reflect the natural light coming in through the windows, brighten the space and make the matte finish of the cabinets stand out that much more. And if you paint your cabinets, go with a contrasting flooring. By mixing the textures of matte and polish, and using contrasting colors of light and dark, you’ll avoid things being too monochromatic, even if you stay within the same color family. Providing contrast with the interior finishes also adds depth to the room and provides flexibility for future changes.

SEIZURES IDIOPATHIC EPILEPSY BY DR. DAWN MEHRA

E

pilepsy is the most common neurologic (nerve) disorder diagnosed in dogs and is defined by recurrent seizures over a period of time. What is a seizure? It is the body's clinical manifestation (outward appearance) of an excess of electrical activity in the brain. There are many causes of epilepsy including brain tumors, degenerative brain disease and other brain disorders.

Safe

&

Secure Gig Harbor's Premier Pet Facility for over 40 years.

What does a seizure look like? The prodrome or initial stage creates anxiety, irritability and clinginess—often unnoticed by the pet parent. Preictal starts the beginning of the seizure, and within seconds to minutes, the dog becomes “out of it”; he might arch his head and neck during this phase. Ictus is the obvious seizure stage within which loss of bowel and bladder control can occur as well as leg paddling/jerking. It can last seconds to minutes—or longer. The postictal phase follows and is one of the most dangerous for the pet parent because of the confused state of the patient. Dogs often become off balance, temporarily blind and sometimes aggressive.

Safe

An epilepsy diagnosis is often determined by “normal” physical findings, labwork, MRI and neurological tests. Interestingly, seizure triggers are essentially unknown—studies point toward stress, bright lights and change in weather as instigators—but the causes are not always well defined. Do seizures cause pain? Likely no, but they certainly create worry for the pet parent. Caregivers no doubt experience stress and discomfort while watching their loved fur balls change behavior, especially during the ictal phase! Because dogs can't speak English, researchers use the human experience to shed light on the subject. Surprisingly, many people report little or no pain or discomfort after a seizure event, merely a bit of sluggishness and vacancy afterward. Epileptic seizure treatments focus on lowering the brain's “seizure threshold,” attempting to decrease the severity and number while minimizing the side effects of medications.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

28

A general practice veterinarian will likely have a variety of treatment options including medical and non-medical (nutritional and acupuncture). The veterinarian's goal is to maintain a good quality of life for the pet.

What to do when your pet has seizures: 1. Stay calm. 2. Document before, during and after (by video if possible) observations. Include seizure length and frequency. 3. Keep a safe distance until after the postictal phase. 4. Call your veterinarian or pet emergency hospital for direction—especially if the seizure lasts more than five minutes.

THE PROS AND CONS OF ROTH IRA CONVERSIONS PROVIDED BY CHERI JOHNSON, FINANCIAL PLANNER, INVESTMENT ADVISOR, STRATEGIC WEALTH ADVISORS, GIG HARBOR

I

f you own a traditional IRA, perhaps you have thought about converting it to a Roth IRA. “Going Roth” makes sense for some traditional Ira owners, but not all. Why go Roth? You believe that income tax rates will be higher in future years than they are today. After all, once you are age 59 ½ and have had your Roth IRA open for at least five years, withdrawals of the earnings from your Roth IRA are exempt from federal income taxes. You can withdraw your Roth IRA contributions tax tree and penalty free at any time. Additionally, you never have to make mandatory withdrawals from a Roth IRA, and if your income permits, you can make contributions to a Roth IRA as long as you live. For 2018, the contribution limits are $120,000 for single filers and $189,000 for joint filers, with phase-out ranges respectively ending at $135,000 and $199,000 representing modified adjusted gross income. While you may make too much to contribute to a Roth IRA, you have the option of converting a traditional IRA to a Roth. Imagine never having to draw down your IRA each year. Imagine having a reservoir of tax-free income for retirement, provided you follow IRS rules. Imagine the possibility of those assets passing to your heirs without being taxed. Sounds great, right? The question is: Can you handle the taxes that would result from a Roth conversion. Why not go Roth? Two reasons: The tax hit could be substantial, and time may not be on your side. A Roth IRA conversion is a taxable event. The IRS regards it as a payout from a traditional IRA prior to that money entering a Roth IRA and is considered taxable income. That could send you into a higher income tax bracket in the year the conversion occurs.

The earlier in life you convert a regular IRA to a Roth, the better. Your income should rise as you get older; you will likely finish your career in a higher tax bracket than when you were first employed. The question: Is it better to pay taxes on IRA contributions today or tomorrow? Will your Roth have time to grow to offset the taxes paid on conversion? Model scenarios considering “what-ifs” should be mapped out. Many retirees have lower income levels than their end salaries; they may retire to a lower tax rate. That is a key argument against Roth conversion. You can go Roth without converting your entire IRA. You could do a multi-year conversion by spreading the Roth conversion over two or more years to potentially avoid higher income taxes on some of the conversion income.

Your Life. Your Goals. Our Focus. Are you confident in your financial planning – retirement - legacy? Join me for a confidential and complimentary discussion to make sure you’re headed in the right direction. • • • • • • • •

Income Stress Test Investment Management Retirement Income Strategies Social Security Maximization 401k Evaluation Beneficiary Audit Legacy Planning Risk Protection

Lastly, Roth IRAs can be very useful estate planning tools. If IRS rules are followed, Roth IRA heirs may end up with a tax-free inheritance, paid out either annually or as a lump sum. In contrast, distributions of inherited assets from a traditional IRA are routinely taxed. Cheri Johnson may be reached at 253.858.4411 or cheri@strategicwealthadv.com. Taking care of your brain and reducing stress while increasing productivity

I

f it feels like you’re juggling too much, you’re probably right. This is especially true for entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

Studies by Oxford Economics, Morar Consulting and the Mayo Clinic show that nearly 40 percent of the people who work in an office feel burned out. We take fewer breaks and often have impossible deadlines. Digital access can “connect” us 24/7. Fewer people than ever clock “good sleep,” and 27 percent of Americans regularly work between 10pm and 6am. Chronic stress is on the rise, but I don’t need to tell you that. How did we get here? For centuries, our economy focused on agriculture. By land or by sea, the focus was food production. People worked hard and slept well. At the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th, innovation drastically increased the amount of harvest. A few decades later, the invention of machines and the assembly line brought about the Industrial Revolution. Factories were built. People followed jobs to the cities. Employees were paid for their time, and wages were based on skill. The processes, structures and machines reliably predicted daily output. The trade of time for money was equitable. Computer technology launched the Information Age—and everything changed. Information, distributed via the Cloud and leveraged across millions of computers, is expanding exponentially. Over centuries, we learned how to rest our body and recover for the next day’s activities. We have yet to learn how to rest and renew our brain. We push for more productivity like we push a muscle. Pushing our brains longer and harder often results in diminishing returns and fatigues our brain. The exception is learning new skills. So how do we take care of our brain, reduce our stress and increase productivity? Here are a few tips: Get moving. Enjoyable exercise relieves pent-up stress. Yoga, boating, walking, swimming and many other wonderful activities stretch your muscles, relax your eyes and rest your brain. Take an extended break over the weekend. Remember to rest during your work day as well—especially if you’re in an office. Set a timer. Take a break every 50 to 75 minutes. Look away from your screen. Stand up. Take a drink of water. Stretch your body. You’re giving your brain a much-needed break. Get centered. In a highly scheduled environment, there’s little time to connect with your personal rhythm. Even three deep breaths can reconnect you to your body. High performers frequently have a morning practice that includes some form of centering. A few minutes

Gig Harbor Garden Tour The art of gardening

BY PATTI MCFERRAN PHOTOS BY PATTI MCFERRAN & INEZ RITCHIE

T

his year’s Gig Harbor Garden Tour poster is a beautiful splash of color called ‘Double Tulips’ by artist Victor K. Andres. A Gig Harbor resident, Andres was inspired by boats and the sea but his floral water colors are what caught the eye of those choosing the art for the poster. Following a lead to check out the website for his paintings, they fell in love with his depictions of flowers. After Andres died in May of 2017 after a long bout with leukemia, his daughters set up the website in his memory and to offer some of his paintings for sale. The proceeds will benefit his beloved wife of 51 years. You can access the website at AndresWaterColors.com. So many artists have been inspired to paint flowers and gardens: Think of Monet’s water lilies, Van Gogh’s sunflowers or O’Keeffe’s irises. Conversely, many gardeners have been inspired by art, but they use flowers and plants as paint and the landscape as their canvas. It’s obvious to see the beauty in a single flower, but

the gardener’s art goes further. In the best of gardens one can’t help but notice the artistic placement of plants for color contrast and complement. But the texture and shading of plants is an even more important talent when it comes to arranging a border, a bed or a grouping of container plants. The shape and color of non-organic objects in the garden also plays an important role in creating a visually stimulating picture. This year’s gardens show an amazing amount of artistry in color. The window boxes on Nina Dreyer’s front porch fairly drip with bright annuals framed and complemented by green shades ranging from deep, dark geranium leaves to sharp, lime-bright potato vine. The many shades of roses in Claudia Thompson’s Canterwood garden and Karen Beck’s boxwood-enclosed rose bed will turn those of us who have shady gardens green with envy. But the shady gardeners are the ones who can create wonderful tapestries of green complemented by lush purples and rich russets. Norene Scott moved

Norene is an artist, specializing in jewelry, and her talent is echoed in her garden. The other shady garden on this year’s tour is the Osterichers’. They wanted to keep the native plants that were on the property when they moved in. They’ve added subtle touches such as a natural-looking ponds and non-native perennials that blend in beautifully and create a serene habitat for birds and other wildlife. Monet would approve, even though he got in trouble with the local authorities for diverting a stream to create his ponds! A couple of this year’s gardens show the influence of Asian art including a lovely pagoda

with temple bells at Claudia Thompson’s. The Lightfeldts’ hillside garden on Horsehead Bay has many touches of the Orient including places of quiet reflection with maples artfully placed by Yang’s Nursery and garden art including temples and pagodas. There are also homages to their daughter’s favorite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. In Carol and Tim Williams’ garden there are views of water and sky framed by a gated archway and many other treats for the artistic eye including rows of colorful alliums marching along in shiny galvanized troughs. So there is (to quote a line from the 2017 exhibit ‘From Monet to Matisse’ at the Royal Academy in London) “a link between the humble trowel and the paintbrush.” When you attend the 2018 Gig Harbor Garden Tour, keep your artist’s eye

TEACHER OF THE MONTH

Heather Jones BY COLIN ANDERSON

“There is nothing that cannot be accomplished if you are willing to put in the effort. It is my greatest desire that no student would limit themselves in any way."

T

here’s an old saying that goes, ‘Those who cannot do teach.” However, Heather Jones has a different theory on her profession. “I would argue that those who teach actually get to do it all and all in the company of incredibly enthusiastic 10-year-old people,” she said. Heather is wrapping up her 15th year in the profession and is currently a fourth grade teacher at Evergreen Elementary School. She enlightens her students in core studies like math, science and social studies while also mixing in language and the visual arts. Like many young people, Heather wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to be when she grew up, but her love of learning eventually landed her on the path to becoming an educator. “I love exploring nature so I thought 'be a biologist;' I loved reading and imagined myself writing adventure stories; I wanted to learn about cultures from all over the world and imagined myself as a roving photojournalist. While in college, going several directions at once, I uncovered a love of the art of education and working with children,” said Heather. Heather is relatively new to the Peninsula School District, having spent her previous 14 years teaching across the country in Kentucky. A move across three time zones is no easy feat, but before embarking on a new adventure in the West, she found that her impact on her previous community will be felt for years to

come. “A class I taught both third and fourth grade to was graduating from high school as I was leaving. A good number of them came back to visit in their caps and gowns to let me know how important our time together was to them,” said Heather. These young adults recalled not just the academics but the relationships they built with friends and their teacher at such a young age. “This reflection with these students reminded me that there is no knowing the far-reaching implications of time spent in the classroom.” Heather’s impact is just beginning to be felt in the Gig Harbor community, and if there’s one consistent lesson she wants her students to learn it’s that life and its rewards are built upon a foundation of hard work. “There is nothing that cannot be accomplished if you are willing to put in the effort. It is my greatest desire that no student would limit themselves in any way,” she said. Heather smiles each day as she watches her young scientists, writers, readers, mathematicians and explorers make their own daily discoveries, many of which will stay with them long after they’ve left her classroom. “In the classroom we are always working on building the skill of perseverance because it is not something you have to be born with; tenacity can be learned!”

Pursuing A Passion

ig Harbor became home to Harbor Teak, which offers exotic wood, furniture and home décor items, just this past January, and the community is invited to join them for their Grand Opening Saturday, June 2, during the Maritime Gig Festival. Owners and husband-and-wife team Justin and Patricia Freed relocated to Gig Harbor from Port Orchard five year ago, and in 2016 they began developing the concept for Harbor Teak where today they are actively pursuing their passions; marrying traditional boat building/woodworking roots with their love for quality, hand-crafted teak furniture. They offer high-quality teak furniture and lumber at their Gig Harbor retail storefront. Teak wood, a more expensive wood than others, is ideal for products that require resistance to the elements, such as boats and outdoor furniture. With their exotic wood selection specifically geared toward those seeking a level beyond what can be found in any “big box” store, it is equally important for

says. "They have some pictures hanging up there of me working on a good-sized Ketch we were building. I think I was 22 at the time."

“As direct importers, we personally travel to Indonesia to seek out those unique items that help you build distinction while, at the same time, being mindful of your pocketbook,” says Justin. Whether you are looking for teak to repair your boat, find an outdoor furniture set or a unique one-of-a-kind piece, there’s no need to look elsewhere—Harbor Teak is the answer.

With their four children now grown, Justin says, “We are at a place and time in our lives where we have the opportunity to pursue our passions and not be constrained by the [responsibilities] we had before.”

As Justin says, “Harbor Teak is a reflection of many years of trial and error, winning some and losing a bit, and generally gaining the knowledge to be able to collect the types of things found here in the store. We offer our knowledge and experience together with great items and pricing [to all who walk into our store].” Additionally, the business is developing an offering of exotic lumber and wood products, which Justin says is simply an outgrowth of his passion for working with wood, boats and tools. "I attended the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building up in Port Townsend way back in 1982!" he

Harbor Teak is the result of two things the Freeds thoroughly enjoy— traveling and shopping. After 30 years of travels back and forth to Indonesia and purchasing furniture for themselves and friends, Justin and Patricia decided to make the dream of Harbor Teak a reality. And each day they look forward to showcasing the quality wood and unique items they have purchased during their travels. When it comes to what the couple finds most rewarding in the work they do, Justin says it’s “having the ability to pursue a goal of starting a small business in a place like Gig Harbor and to enjoy the friendship and neighborly camaraderie, combined with the thrill mentioned above, is truly what we are after.”

he challenge for a maritime resident of the Gig Harbor Marina will be how to explain to himself why in the world he chose to row his custom-made row boat across the 9,150 nautical miles from Neah Bay in Northwest Washington to Perth in Western Australia. Air Force veteran Jacob Hendrickson knows a thing or two about adventure. He has first-hand experience with G-forces over the past 10 years flying combat missions over Afghanistan. He has pushed his reconnaissance jets to speeds that would make most sailors dizzy. Then, during the long hot summer of 2014, he had an epiphany.

“Being an Air Force pilot had turned into just a job,” Hendrickson said with a straight face. “Flying combat missions can sometimes be difficult. But I was surprised when it actually became a bore.”

course for Australia.

To cope with the tediousness routine of his dull life, the former Air Force Academy cadet challenged himself with the idea of propelling himself—alone—across the unpredictable ocean tides and treacherous currents between the West Coast of North America and the Land Down Under.

The estimated eight-month crossing will force the jet jockey to “to experience patience and look inward at myself.”

Weather permitting, he plans to begin his trek in early July but quickly added that he will delay his departure until he gets the eight to 10 days of good weather he’ll need to set a pace and his

His challenge, said Hendrickson, will test his ability to maintain his sanity that allows him “to understand the true definition of the term ‘grit.’”

The time alone with himself will not be a new experience. “I currently live alone aboard a boat in the Gig Harbor Marina,” he said. “I live an isolated life. There will be no wife or kids anxiously waiting for me to walk ashore if, and when, I arrive in Perth.”

AIR FORCE PILOT WILL FLEX HIS WATER WINGS ON AN EIGHT-MONTH JOURNEY ACROSS THE PACIFIC BY DAN AZNOFF PHOTOS COURTESY OF JACOB HENDRICKSON

Being a realist, the affirmed bachelor knows that his amateur skills at sea-going navigation could mean that he may be end up thousands of miles from his intended destination. “Odds are that I very well may end up in Hawaii or California,” he said. “Wherever my journey ends, it will be a valuable learning experience for my life.” Hendrickson said his experience as an aviator has provided him with a working knowledge of navigation, but the currents and the winds at sea level present a different range of challenges than at 30,000 feet. “The currents can act like the wind, but that’s where the similarities end,” he explained.

“For a journey of this length, I had to make considerations as to the types of freeze-dried foods I could take along, how much toothpaste to pack, how much butane I will need to boil water, what type of music to bring and when I might need to deploy the sea anchor.” He is still undecided on which audio tapes and how much music to bring along to occupy the long days without companionship. He may end up buying an electronic reader so he can have enough reading material, but that is low on his priority list right now. Hendrickson played football at the Air Force Academy and performed with the band in high school. He has made the decision to leave his saxophone behind.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

41

“I still need to decide whether or not I need to wear socks,” he said with a smile. “That’s a question Captain Cook and the early explorers never had to worry about.” The ambitious sailor said his maritime dietary plan was devised as a class project by graduate students in sports medicine at Oregon State University. He will have a specially made water maker onboard to purify seawater for drinking and cooking. The majority of the meals, he said, will be prepacked with macronutrients to provide nutrition and cut down on the payload needed for the crossing. Although the native of Austin, Texas, left the

actual construction of his row boat to Schooner Boatworks in Portland, Hendrickson spent as much time as could spare at the factory to oversee the production. The concept for the ocean-going rowboat was the last boat designed by Eric Sponberg before his retirement. Hendrickson’s boat was featured in an article on the famed designer in a recent issue of Boat Builder magazine. Sponberg was so proud of the craft he designed for the Air Force pilot, he included it on his personal website, EricWSponberg.com. “My final boat design was an ocean-going rowboat for rowing solo, non-stop, across the Pacific Ocean. You can read about the history and development of my boat and mast designs on my new website.” For his safety, Hendrickson will wear a four-point harness that will hopefully prevent him from being tossed overboard in rough seas. His 28-foot boat will weigh only 22 pounds before it will be stocked with provisions for the voyage.

The plan includes a satellite connection that will allow his volunteer support team to track the daily progress of the small craft as it crosses more than a dozen time zones. He will also carry a personal emergency beacon that can connect to a satellite system operated by the Federal Communications Commission. So that he is never too far from modern conveniences, Hendrickson will also have unlimited access to texting friends and supporters around the world and access to a global rescue plane, if needed. If the electronics fail, Hendrickson also plans to bring along a sextant, a compass and his watch, “Just in case.” Finances were the largest obstacle to the journey for Hendrickson to overcome. His said his normal duties as a civilian contractor to the Armed Force commits him to two days on and two days off. His typical week over the past two years has been four days on and only one day off in order to build up the $800,000 in savings he estimates the adventure will ultimately cost. The isolation, he said, will be a dramatic contrast to his normally hectic lifestyle.

The would-be captain was on hand to be part of the testing of the boat while under construction. The innovative design of the craft allowed it to right itself even if it was toppled over by high waves.

“This was not an overnight decision,” Hendrickson concluded. “I jumped into this challenge with two feet into water that was over my head. No pun intended.”

“I sat in the boat with the four-point harness when the boat was flipped during a test run,” he recalled. “My head was under water for only a few moments before the boat righted itself and I was vertical again.”

The aviator predicted that his first order of business once he reaches dry land will be to eat a meal “that has not been pre-packaged or freeze-dried.”

The safety precautions went beyond the design of the craft. Hendrickson said the row boat will be equipped with the latest in electronics to guard him against any unforeseen situations. He described the high-tech safety measures his own risk management plan.

As this year’s captain of Gig Harbor’s soccer team, Max has made significant contributions to the varsity team since his sophomore year, including a third-place finish last year at state. But his accomplishments extend far beyond the soccer field. Max has maintained a cumulative 3.97 GPA and received As in all eight of his AP classes. Last year he was awarded the AP Scholar Award and also placed first at the Washington State Fair photography competition being named the “Choice of the Day.” His success has not been without challenges. Managing both school and sports meant more than school practices. During much of high school, Max was also on a soccer team which was 45 minutes away, which meant many nights he would not return home from practice until past 10:30pm.

In the fall, Max will attend the University of Washington where he will study biochemistry and microbiology. His goal is to receive his doctorate in pharmacy so that he can enter the field of developmental pharmaceuticals analyzing the crossroads between pharmacy and the genome. Max shares that he loves many things about soccer—the competition, his teammates, the intricacy of the game and the raw athleticism it requires. He is also grateful to the lessons the sport has taught him. “Soccer has taught me how to push through adversity as I learned to balance school and sports,” he said. “Soccer has taught me how to lead others and how to rely on them when needed. I have learned how to out-work all others to reach my potential.”

His high school years have been filled with a schedule that includes school during the day, football practice after school, followed by soccer practice. “I would not get home until 9:45pm and still have to shower, do homework and eat dinner,” said Ben. “Keeping my grades up was a struggle but I managed to accomplish an honor roll GPA for all four years and be 100-percent committed to both my football team and soccer team.” Ben said he enjoys the emotional rollercoaster he endures throughout the season for both of his sports. “At one point, your team would be winning every game and you felt invincible, then one loss at the end of the season could ruin your undefeated streak. Your emotions run high throughout the entire season,” he said. “Whether it’s happiness, sadness, fatigue or confidence, having a strong emotional connection to what you do is evidence of passion. It means you love what you do.”

Ben will attend Boise State University in the fall and plans to major in kinesiology with the hope of becoming a physical therapist. “It is the best way to combine my interest in the medical field with my passion for sports,” he said. A life lesson he has learned by being involved in athletics is accountability. “My coaches held me and all of my teammates accountable in order to strengthen the overall program and help it become more successful,” said Ben. “When the accountability standard is high, you are required to push yourself in every way. It creates an added pressure that motivates you to do your best.”

MY SISTER’S PANTRY HELPING THE FOOD INSECURE

STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

“THE FOOD HERE IS EXCELLENT, IT’S REAL GOOD,” said Mark Voyer, a client at My Sister’s Pantry. He was one of the many people lined up on a brisk Saturday morning waiting for the pantry to open. Also waiting was Maria Mondragon, who loves being able to socialize with other people in need. Up and down the line clients shared how nice and caring they are at My Sister’s Pantry. As people begin to gather you can sense the comradery as they greet each other. When handicap visitors arrive everyone gently moves aside so they can sit inside to wait until opening time. The whole group treats each other with respect, and you can tell how much each one looks forward to this period of fellowship and community. My Sister’s Pantry opened its doors in 1999. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and an outreach

program of the First United Methodist Church of Tacoma. “The original director named the food bank. She had been homeless at one time and needed the services a food bank provides. She relied on her sister to help her out on occasion and said that she could always find what she needed from her sister’s pantry. Once she had stabilized her life, she wanted to give back. The church had quite a bit of empty space that was perfect for a food bank,” said Martha Curwen, who has served as director since 2002. One of the busiest food banks in the Tacoma area, My Sister’s Pantry serves an average of 350 families per month and each year distributes more than 125,000 pounds of food. The group opens three days a month and serves a hot meal. Visitors have the opportunity to receive groceries and clothing. The meal is prepared

with a lot of love and served on tables covered with fresh tablecloths, metal cutlery and china. The china dates back to the 1920s or ‘30s from an old Tacoma church, and there is enough that every person can eat off a real plate. “The favorite meal by far is when the cooks from Christ Episcopal Church come and make biscuits and sausage gravy,” Curwen said. The clothing bank is set up like a store with separate sections for men, women and children. The Pantry is open two evenings and one Saturday a month allowing minimum-wage earners to visit without disrupting their work schedules. Curwen has a wealth of experience that makes her perfect to head My Sister’s Pantry. “I’ve had several jobs over my career that prepared me for being the director. Right after college I

not required at our food bank. Clients include low-income families and the homeless. Our clientele are veterans, street folk and immigrants just new to the United States, those that are leaving the detention center and those who may have suffered a catastrophe in their lives such as a fire,” said Curwen.

Curwen finds the work she does very rewarding. “One in six Washingtonians relies on a food bank; the people we serve are food insecure,” she said. “While I’m a paid part-time employee of the Pantry, I’ve volunteered with other organizations most of my life. Doing good in the world makes me feel content. I strive to treat everyone with respect because I could be in their shoes, too.”

While some organizations may struggle to find volunteers, the Pantry is fortunate to have an ongoing partnership with local utility companies. On the first Monday of the month, employees from Tacoma Public Utilities volunteer, and on the third Monday of the month, Tacoma Power employees work the shift. On the Saturday opening, various women’s groups and church members volunteer. Throughout the year military from Joint Base Lewis-McChord and local schools also contribute their time. “During the summer months we can use volunteers, as many of our regulars take vacations,” Curwen said.

My Sister’s Pantry fills a need within the community. The typical client served is anyone who has a need for food and clothing. “Proof of need is

The Pantry has had a huge impact in Tacoma for the food insecure and the homeless population. “We hear from our clients that they like our food bank because we distribute groceries, serve a hot meal and have a clothing bank each time we are open. We also do not restrict the number of times a client can visit,” she said. “Since our three open times are spread throughout the month, we know that clients must seek other resources. Further, clients tell us that we treat everyone with dignity and respect.”

Before dropping off items, be sure to call 253.627.1186 to verify someone is there to receive them. Curwen is generally in the office daily from 10am to 3pm. Also be sure to check their website regularly for needs at MySistersPantry.org. My Sister’s Pantry is located at 621 Tacoma Avenue South in Tacoma.

Over the years, My Sister’s Pantry has received many awards including the Ecumenical Service Award from Associated Ministries, the Silver Spoon Award from the Emergency Food Network and the Compassionate Hospitality Award from First Center Tacoma. Curwen encourages people “to recognize something that is important to them and then seek a place to put into action their passions, donating time, talent and resources.”

HOW TO HELP • The greatest need is monetary donations which help with operating costs and bulk buying.

• Have a food drive or drop off individual donations, hygiene items for women are always needed • Summer clothing, new socks and undergarments, especially needed are men’s and children’s clothing.

ONE OF THE BUSIEST FOOD BANKS IN THE TACOMA AREA, MY SISTER’S PANTRY SERVES AN AVERAGE OF 350 FAMILIES PER MONTH AND EACH YEAR DISTRIBUTES MORE THAN 125,000 POUNDS OF FOOD.

• If you have a summer garden consider planting a row for the Pantry and donating fresh produce. Donors of fresh items need to remember that the Pantry is only open three times per month. Plan perishable food drop-offs based on when they are open. • Volunteers during the summer months as the regular team of workers take vacations. • Watch the website for a restaurant take-over which raises money for the Pantry. • Contribute to or attend the Pantry’s major fundraiser in the fall.

hen we first launched Gig Harbor Living Local in January of 2014, we knew it would take time to grow our publication and establish relationships within the community. The unexpected surprise, however, was how quickly we were embraced by the businesses and residents of Gig Harbor. The relationships we have built and the people we have come to call our friends have been nothing short of amazing. We attribute our success to you, the community of Gig Harbor. We enjoy bringing to you, our readers and advertisers, the good news that is happening in our community. From the impact that local nonprofit groups are making in Gig Harbor to stories on our youth and hardworking business owners, it is refreshing to bring you positive stories in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelmingly negative. Our content is original and organic that connects the community, and we consider it a privilege to produce this publication and work with the people, organizations and businesses to do so. Julie Reed, director of Living Local publications in Washington, has been with Gig Harbor Living Local since its inception and is grateful to all who

have supported her and our publication throughout the years. “We thank the businesses for their support. Without them, there is no us,” she says. Working with businesses, helping them brand and grow their client base, is something that does not happen overnight. We have been able to build wonderful relationships with our clients, and they put great trust in us each and every month; something we do not take for granted. Living Local owner Steve Russo believes it is vital to be at the forefront of all the latest trends in the media business. To that end, over the last several years, we have grown the various platforms for sharing our stories and our clients’ messages. We are much more than a magazine. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and on our website, which is built on a blogging platform in conjunction with Google’s best practices as well. “People are receiving their information in a variety of ways. We are a society that is on the run, tied to our phones and social media, so it is critical to utilize many platforms for spreading our message,” says Steve. “Every article you read in the printed version of the magazine can be found on Google and or social media.”

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

That same philosophy applies when it comes to the businesses with whom we work. Earlier this year, Living Local launched a new company, Rocket Fish Digital, which helps our clients more effectively market their businesses online. We provide our clients with the tools to improve their digital footprint, track their analytics and even monitor reviews others post about them. “We have already witnessed great success with the clients who have signed up for our beta program launched in January 2018,” says Steve. “We launched this service after years of research, and we can now provide our clients with every tool necessary to be relevant online improving their Google rankings and overall digital footprint at a fraction of the cost of most competitors.” As we continue to grow, assisting clients with marketing and branding their businesses while sharing the good news of our community, we look forward to continuing to work with you and extend a heartfelt “thank you” for all the support over the last several years.

ETHANOL BROUGHT TO YOU BY HOWARD MACKERT, MACKERT AUTOMOTIVE, LLC

Let’s talk about ethanol in your fuel and how it affects your vehicles and gas-powered equipment.

We offer $O down, 100% financing OAC APR as low as 4.99%

Approximately 20 years ago, the state EPA mandated 10 percent ethanol in the gasoline you get at the pumps. This helps with smog and has had a definite effect on our air quality. It does, however, have some negative effects:

Licensed, Bonded & Insured

1. Vehicles that aren’t “flex fuel” capable saw a 10-percent drop in fuel economy. This was caused by the lower BTU rating of ethanol and the effect of extra oxygen in the exhaust skewing the sensors of the computer-controlled engines. 2. Ethanol is corrosive. Older cars not designed for this fuel blend will see rusting in the internal system. Most cars after 1990 are not affected.

Specializing in Roofing, Specialize in Roofing, Windows & Siding

3. Ethanol actually conducts electricity, which gasoline does not. Fuelinjected vehicles have electric fuel pumps inside the fuel tank, so any arching in the motor contacts will cause accelerated wear.

Windows & Siding

1901 Center St. Tacoma

4. Ethanol will cause non-viton rubber in carburetors to swell.

253-363-8280 • www.tristate.pro • Lic# tristi*931qh

What do you do? There are a few stations that sell fuel without ethanol, which is recommended for gas-powered lawn tools. If you can’t find that, use a fuel treatment that specifically counters those effects.

Put On Your Own Mask First, Then Seek to Assist Others The importance of putting yourself first By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS

IF YOU’VE EVER FLOWN ON A COMMERCIAL PLANE, YOU’VE HEARD THE SAFETY SPEECH REGARDING LIFE JACKETS AND EMERGENCY EXITS. You’ve also heard and seen the demonstration about putting on your oxygen mask. At the end, they make mention that you must put on your own mask before assisting others.

of others before you take on the needs of yourself. In principle, this sounds all altruistic and warm and fuzzy. I mean, if we all just devoted our lives to helping others, wouldn’t we live in an incredible place? I’m not so sure. Think about it. If you’re absolutely elated with your life, are you better or worse in your relationships and interactions with others? I’ll answer for you. You’re better. Everyone is. But isn’t taking care of yourself first selfish? Nope.

It’s interesting that they have to point this out. Shouldn’t it be pretty obvious that if you die or pass out due to lack of oxygen while trying to help others, that you won’t be able to help anyone at all? It probably should be, but I’d bet that nine times out of 10, most people are going to make sure their loved ones are OK before taking care of themselves.

Notice I said, “Take care of yourself first,” not “Ignore everyone else and only serve yourself.” Those are two totally different practices. “But by serving myself first, I’m going to make my spouse and/or family mad at me. I can’t just devote time to getting what I need, then them. I need to continue running at full speed to provide for their needs, then in that last 20

How often are you guilty of this in your everyday life? If you’re like most people I work with, the vast majority of your life revolves around the needs

11430 51st Ave NW Ste 101A Gig Harbor, WA 98332 minutes before I go to sleep, I’ll focus on me.” Hmmm. Read that again and tell me if it doesn’t sound a little crazy. Yet, I hear it all the time. “I really want to do this, but this person will be mad, jealous or resentful.” Imagine that you just did what you wanted, ignoring them for just a little bit. Would you be happier when you returned? Probably. At this point, one of two things will probably happen. One, the person you are worried about will be so supportive and happy for you that you’ll wonder why you didn’t do this sooner. Or two, they’ll be jealous and resentful. If it’s path two, they’re really toxic to your life, and you need to do everything you can to cleanse that relationship. That could be working through the issue through therapy or counseling. Or you could just do your best to cut them out of your life and never look back. By the way, if you’re not doing this on social media, you should be. Unfollow the people who make your blood boil.

I can understand that this all sounds great in principle, but execution is much harder. That’s normal. The underlying histories and complications make everything a lot more challenging. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. The best course of action that you can take from here is to get to a place where you are mentally comfortable with taking care of yourself first. Consider all of your choices and actions from the perspective of, “I’ll be better at helping everyone else if I just do this for me first.” Just thinking that way will make you feel a lot better about things. Then start taking small actions toward making those self-care and self-interested things a reality. The underlying bonus here is that when you can do those things without guilt, you will become better at all of the things you were afraid of losing track of or feeling guilty about not fulfilling. You’ll do them with more vigor and energy that all of the people in your life will be much better off than they were when you were seemingly unselfish.

Is your bite

t can be debilitating. A severe headache can make it difficult to focus at work, engage in everyday activities and even can force one to stay in bed. Masking the pain with over-the-counter medications or prescriptions can provide temporary relief, but it is not addressing the cause of the problem. Some people have also resorted to massage, chiropractic treatment and physical therapy for relief. But once again those were only helping with the pain and not looking at the source. It can become overwhelming and even cause one to go into depression.

a part of the problem?

The number of people who endure recurring headaches is staggering. The National Headache Foundation reports more than 45 million Americans endure recurring headaches; from this group, 23 million suffer from migraines. What many may not know is the source of up to 80 percent of these headaches is a result from dental force-related problems.

Chronic head, face, jaw & neck pain ARTICLE PROVIDED BY DR. RHONDA SAVAGE

Unfortunately, many who live with constant headaches for years become resigned to the condition. They give up and settle with the fact that it is something they just have to live with. The good news is that many dentists can help cure the pain of migraine and other headaches, tinnitus, TMJ and vertigo. While it is a fact that many headaches are triggered by stress or are hormone-induced or alcohol-induced, nighttime headaches can also be triggered by a bite imbalance as well as lack of oxygen at nighttime. Sleep issues and headaches are often tied together for many patients. A staggering number of people don't know why they're in pain. Many are unaware that dental force- related issues, either related to their mouth or as a result of trauma (like a fall, sports injury or whiplash) can be the root of their pain. Using a computerized bite analysis, a dentist can evaluate your range of motion and bite imbalances. Specialized tools and techniques, such as ultrasound, micro-current technology, cold-laser therapy and manual muscle massage, reduce pain and inflammation. The treatment promotes healing of the muscles and nerves; then the bite is balanced after inflammation is reduced. Drug free, needle free and painless, the treatment is aimed at the underlying causes of chronic headaches: the pain and discomfort caused by improper muscle forces in the mouth, head and neck area. Dentists have reported success from people who have suffered a serious car accident and are then plagued with constant headaches. But after a simple and painless process, those patients are headache free. If you wake up many mornings with a dull, nagging and constant headache, it can likely be caused by the muscles of the head, neck and jaw, and the way that teeth come together. Forces imbalanced by the way the teeth come together send a biofeedback loop to the brain that causes pain through the brain stem. If you are one who has suffered from headache issues, don’t mask the pain any longer. Get to the root of the problem and consider seeing a dentist to treat them.

COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

IMPROVING YOUR LISTENING EXPERIENCE BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A, HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY

O

ften people with hearing loss and their loved ones believe that their communication difficulties are due only to poor hearing. There are plenty of other factors, however, that can lead to communication breakdowns, such as heavy accents or poor pronunciation, background noise, dim lighting, unfamiliar or unknown topics of conversation, illness, fatigue or cognitive limitations. Even without hearing loss, factors like those above can cause difficulty with communication. Here are some strategies that can be used to help reduce confusion and prevent breakdowns in conversation: • If applicable, tell communication partners that you have a hearing loss. • Ask friends and family to get your attention before speaking to you and to let you know if the topic changes. • When possible, find a quiet, well-lit room and position yourself close (3 to 6 feet) to the person you are trying to hear. • When you realize that miscommunication has occurred, notify your conversation partner. • Saying “Huh?” or “What?” does not always work well to resolve communication issues. Consider asking the speaker to rephrase, or, when asking for repetition, clarify which part of the message you did not understand. • Check what you heard by repeating the message back to the speaker. • When possible, ask the speaker to write down important information like addresses, phone numbers and appointment times. Although it may often seem easier to “nod and smile” and pretend that you have understood what was said, this is likely to increase misunderstandings and has been known to lead to embarrassing situations. It is usually better for everyone involved to proactively address potential communication difficulties using these strategies. Here are some more specific tips you can use when particular problems arise: Problem: The understand.

Answer: Ask the speaker to speak slowly and to look directly at you. Seeing the speaker’s lips and expressions will help your understanding. Seeing facial expressions and using visual cues can increase understanding of speech up to 20 percent, even for a person with no formal lip-reading training. Note: People often believe that speaking louder will help the person with hearing loss understand better, but in fact this is not typically the case. Speaking slowly and clearly is much more effective for most individuals. Problem: Background noise is too loud. Answer: Move to a quieter location. If you can, pick a quieter restaurant and/or go at an off-hour when it will be less noisy. When dining out, select restaurants with soundabsorbing carpets, curtains, linen tablecloths and booths. Avoid restaurants that have hard floors and bare walls. Turn off or move away from noise sources such as radios, televisions or dishwashers. Tip: Some restaurant reviews provide information on noise levels. Make use of these when choosing a restaurant. Problem: You are sick, tired, stressed or distracted. Answer: Be patient with yourself. It is reasonable to ask for short breaks in meetings to prevent listening fatigue. If you are experiencing difficulty with communication, seek out the services of an audiologist to discuss appropriate solutions for your life.

REFLEXOLOGY AND FIBROMYALGIA Chronic Pain BY DARCIE MILLER, OWNER, LIGHT IN BALANCE REFLEXOLOGY

A Holistic approach to improved health

W

hat is fibromyalgia? It is the second most common condition affecting muscles and bones. There are so many affected by this syndrome, and the list of symptoms is as long as the levels and varieties of pain. Each day can bring relief or even more pain or continued pain from the previous day. Fibromyalgia is difficult to diagnose because there are no diagnostic tests to give a clear answer—diagnosis is made from a list of symptoms, which can actually be some of the same symptoms as other illnesses and disease. Not only are the symptoms the same as other illnesses, they can completely disappear only to come back at a later date. As a result, it can take a very long time to make a definitive diagnosis of fibromyalgia. The duration of each symptom varies, and those who suffer with chronic symptoms have good and bad days or even weeks and months. The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown; recent studies suggest that changes in the central nervous system—the brain, spinal cord and nerves—may be responsible for fibromyalgia pain. Fibromyalgia is thought to be the result of overactive nerves and may be responsible for the chronic widespread pain and tenderness people feel. Factors, which may cause fibromyalgia to

develop, are autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, family history, trauma, depression, PTSD and lack of exercise. How is fibromyalgia treated? There are many symptoms associated with fibromyalgia and differing degrees of pain and discomfort. Chronic pain from fibromyalgia can also affect a person’s emotional health and well being. Often, medications and other therapies are prescribed to treat pain and other symptoms. Aside from medication, there are other options that may be beneficial in managing symptoms. Options include specialized yoga classes, qigong and reiki, as well as managing diet and exercise. Reflexology can be beneficial by working reflex points that support the central nervous system, spine, emotional balance and pain receptors. Your doctor may also refer you to a pain management clinic. Ask your doctor for recommendations to a local support group. To find the best fibromyalgia support groups in your area, you can also ask other fibromyalgia patients you know about local groups. The Internet has a wealth of information about support groups in your area, as well as local online groups. You can look for local meetup groups. Whichever options you choose to manage your fibromyalgia, know that you are not alone; help is a phone call or web search away.

Gardening Get your child excited about vegetables! BY DR. JOSE MENDOZA, PEDIATRICS NW, P.S.

O

ne of the most common challenges parents face with their children centers around food and eating. Specifically, many families struggle with eating enough fruits and vegetables. In today’s fast-paced and hectic world, it is much easier to order a pizza or go to your favorite fast food place on the way home from work. One tactic that I have found useful is to involve children in meal preparation. Whether it’s helping pick out ingredients at the store, having them help in the kitchen or growing your own garden, children can feel that they are part of the process and be more eager to eat.

I grew up in rural Eastern Oregon surrounded by onion, beet, corn, wheat, potato and fruit farms. This gave me an appreciation for how food is grown and how it makes it to our table. Here in the South Puget Sound, we are fortunate to have so many family owned and operated farms in the area. However, instead of traveling to the farms, you can have a small piece in your own backyard! Children love playing outside and getting dirty! They are also naturally curious and find wonder in normal everyday things, especially Mother Nature. Why not channel those instincts and create your own family garden? It doesn’t take much space and in fact, you can even grow tomatoes in containers. Our family has had a small garden for the past few years. We have grown broccoli, peas, carrots, tomatoes, beets, lettuce and even peppers! We also have a persimmon tree and got our first bumper crop last year. When children watch their garden grow and help cultivate and water their plants, they are more excited to eat their fruits and vegetables. Gardening teaches them about patience, responsibility and can even help enhance their self-esteem. It also teaches them about how food is grown and they can see the entire process— from garden to table!

Cardio Junkies at Barre? IT’S TRUE! IT’S THAT ADDICTIVE! BY JENNIFER WIGLESWORTH

Your friendly, neighborhood Gig Harbor dentist.

W

hat does it mean to be a “cardio junkie”? It could be that runner who wakes up religiously, every morning at 5am, to get in their daily run. Or maybe it’s that spinner who reserves their spinning bike at the gym, weeks in advance, to ensure they receive their hour of daily spin. Another example might be that swimmer who always takes that extra lap, beyond the hours of training, to simply test their endurance. The examples are endless. Anything that raises the heart rate to challenge one’s body in a cardiovascular way is considered a cardio workout. A cardio junkie is basically one who loves their workout to the point that it becomes a part of who they are—it takes it to the next level. Barre, a.k.a. “the dancer’s workout,” is most commonly known for the power of its isometric strength training. Although this conception is absolutely true, clients are discovering that cardio can also be found during a barre workout. The single repetitions that bring the heart rate from rest to rise in a cardiovascular way are just one of the ways barre workouts are bringing it. High-low interval training with squats, plies and slides are additional ways. Barre workouts most definitely go beyond isometric strength training, but could these workouts be cardio-junkie worthy? To be cardio-junkie worthy, one might say it must position the person within the workout to an almost addictive state. The cardiovascular workout becomes a be-all, end-all, everyday part of one’s life. The cardio workout is something not only craved but also something one can’t get

enough of and for some, as mentioned, begins to define a part of who they are. So, is it possible for those who work out at barre studios to expect to achieve cardio-junkie status? Of course, the answer lies in the one doing the workout, but most of those who have experienced it would answer “yes.” Not all barre studios are the same, but most have developed classes that allow for a more intense cardio portion of class. As mentioned before, sometimes these are the singles sets and other times these are intervaltraining exercises. Depending on the studio, the level of cardio varies. One cannot compare the cardiovascular results of barre workouts against any of the aforementioned ones and expect relatable results, however, one can compare a similar “addiction,” likened to the junkies of typical cardiovascular workouts, to the barre workouts. Barre workouts are becoming popular because they achieve results. And, because they achieve results, barre clients actually have become dedicated “junkies.” All in all, there are cardio junkies at barre. Although not the typical junkies chasing after out-of-breath, repetitive, high-intensity workouts, barre clients are challenged, motivated and resultoriented. Barre provides the high-intensity, lowimpact, cardiovascular workout that many have become addicted to. If it’s not part of a client’s daily routine, it’s definitely part of one’s lifestyle. With this kind of dedication and addiction, there are most definitely cardio junkies at the barre.

BEAUTY SLEEP Does getting enough sleep really make a difference? BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN

W

e have all heard the expression, “I need my beauty sleep,” and it turns out there is something to it. The overall length and quality of sleep that you get has a direct effect on your skin’s health and appearance. Sleeping is when our bodies recover and repair at a cellular level, and our skin rejuvenates. While we are sleeping, our skin is healed and toxins are eliminated. When your sleep habits are compromised, so, too, is your body’s capability to perform these vital functions. During the first three hours of sleep, your body begins producing HGH (Human Growth Hormone) from the pituitary gland. This hormone is essential for the preservation of youthful, healthy skin. Without it, your skin cannot be restored from daily damage. During the next couple of hours of sleep, melatonin levels are increased. Melatonin is the hormone that is in charge of regulating your sleep/wake patterns (circadian rhythm). In addition, melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that aids in the protection of your skin from damaging free radicals. Then in the final few hours of sleep (known

as the active REM sleep stage or deep sleep), your stress hormones (cortisol) decrease. This is when your skin’s temperature is at its lowest point and is what permits your muscles to relax, giving skin its best time to recover. When you are not getting enough sleep, the blood in your body does not flow efficiently. This creates a decrease in oxygen, which is the No. 1 cause of uneven skin tone. Lack of sleep also contributes to lower PH levels, causing dry skin, and most importantly, collagen breakdown. This causes the skin to thin, showcasing wrinkles and imperfections. It is recommended that you get at least eight hours of sleep a night. Create a nighttime routine that promotes deep, restful sleep. Shut down electronics at least one hour before bed. Cleanse your face and perform your skincare routine nightly (never go to bed with makeup on), and sleep on high thread count sheets or satin to decrease the pulling of your skin. Getting quality sleep will help you to not only look but also feel better. If you are unable to get a good night’s rest for reasons beyond your control, speak with your doctor or a specialist. Your skin and body’s health depend on it.

FEATURE STORY

All You Need Is Love Three families who heeded the call to adopt BY JANI GONZALEZ PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE DALE FAMILY AND THE BROWNING FAMILY. PHOTOS OF THE WALLACE FAMILY BY ASHLY MONTORO PHOTOGRAPHY.

T

he plight of medically needy orphans around the globe is a crisis few are aware of. In particular, Ukraine upholds antiquated and overburdened systems where developmentally delayed children are institutionalized in state orphanages where they are often neglected and abused. In 2017, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) reported that 2.7 million children are in residential care (group homes or institutions). Of those, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia had the highest populations of children in this type of care. They estimate that there are 140 million orphaned children globally, some of whom have living parents. It's a crisis that goes unnoticed and is challenging as international adoption laws have created a maze of agencies and applications for families to overcome. But through concerned individuals and certain nonprofits, some of these children are finding homes. Reece's Rainbow is one of those nonprofits. The national organization began in 2006 as a way to promote awareness of orphaned children with Down syndrome and has expanded to include all children with medical needs. They provide information about the adoption process both domestically and internationally. They also provide grants to families adopting and host a fund for donations. The three families featured here decided to adopt children from Ukraine after feeling a bond with a child seen on a social post. All three also came across Reece's Rainbow in their research.

They first became foster parents and adopted their eldest son, Nathanial, and their youngest son, Aiden. Aiden was born with hydrocephalus from which he is mentally and physically impaired. He was 2 ½ months old when they began fostering him; he weighed 7 pounds. When the option to adopt arose, Laura said there was no question. “It was an instantaneous feeling to say ‘yes,’” she said.

The Dales: Room to Love More Laura Dale of Rathdrum, Idaho, has been fundraising to adopt two medically fragile children from Ukraine. She's been fundraising since February 2017 by selling anything from hand-sewn children's clothing to hand-dipped chocolate caramels. But the Dales' story starts more than a decade before when she and her husband, Jonathan, decided to fost-adopt. Their second child, Kya, was born with chronic health issues. She was nonverbal and required constant care, which eventually became normal for the Dales, who had one other child at the time. In spite of their daughter’s medical issues, they wanted to expand their family but struggled with infertility.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

“Kya’s health issues became normal,” said Laura. “There were acute illnesses where we went on autopilot, but we got so used to it that we thought about caring for a child like her.”

Later that year in 2011, their daughter passed away from her health condition, but Laura looks back at the opportunities Kya gave them. “Her issues were so complicated … [but] she gave us the tools we needed to help other kids.” They focused on caring for Aiden and raising their two other sons, now adults. With only Aiden, now 7 years old, to care for, Laura again thought about helping children like him. “He will not progress beyond infant status and is not hard to take care of unless he gets sick,” she said.

FEATURE STORY After seeing a video of a medically needy child in Eastern Europe, Laura thought she would advocate. “I wanted to show these kids aren’t scary—they just want someone to love them,” she said. Her research led her to Reece’s Rainbow where she began advocating by posting on behalf of “Clarence,” a 4-year-old boy institutionalized in what’s called a “baby house.” Often, children may be moved to an adult institution as young as age 5, in which case their life expectancy drops to about a year. The Dales watched Clarence's video repeatedly and decided to adopt. “People ask, ‘Why aren’t you adopting domestically?’” Laura said. “In Eastern Europe, kids with special needs are pushed into institutions. Even physicians don’t know how to treat these kids with conditions like malnutrition.” In the midst of their fundraising, her husband fell in love with “Aria” from a video Laura saw on social media. “[Aria] was throwing things around her crib like our daughter had; I sent [the video] to him, and he said, 'When do we get her?'” The cost of one adoption is at minimum $28,000. Adopting Aria will cost $13,000, but the Dales are nearing their goal and hope to visit Ukraine to finalize the adoption this summer. Even once finalized, they are required to return two more times before bringing their children home. “You really expose yourself as a person. Many people don't understand the costs,” Laura said. “It's been important for me to work for it—to take the time [fundraising)]. Some people have

CHARRISSA BROWNING ECHOED THE SENTIMENT: “ADOPTION IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, BUT EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING.” paid twice what I was asking for, and that helps me get to where I’m going.” The Brownings: Growing a Big Family Charrissa Browning and her husband Phillip, of Port Orchard, Washington, already had a big family when their sixth child, Justus, was born with Down syndrome in 2009. As an infant, he underwent open-heart surgery. Once he had recovered, Charrissa started researching Down syndrome and came across Reece's Rainbow and was immediately drawn to the children listed on the site. “Down syndrome is such a personal thing for us. I read profile after profile and couldn't believe the difference between my child and the photos online,” she said. In June of 2010, the Brownings decided to adopt two children from Ukraine—a boy Maxim and a girl Ivana. Both were around 5 years of age at the time and in the same institution. To raise their adoption fees, Charrissa sold things, fundraised on her blog and hosted a silent auction. They were able to adopt Max just before he turned 6, before he was moved to an adult facility. “It's a place with a mixed population of individuals with mental and health conditions.

Once there, children have an 80-percent chance of dying because of neglect and also abuse from other patients. It's also more difficult to adopt once they're transferred,” Charrissa explained. Their daughter, Ivana, has Down syndrome, and like their son, Justus, had needed heart surgery after birth—except she had never received the proper care. Ivana was born with a hole in her heart and had been relinquished by her parents. It's a miracle she survived the years she did before they adopted her, Charrissa said. “When we met her, her head was shaved, she weighed 20 pounds and wore clothing sized for 18- to 24-month-olds. She was in a laying room where all they did was sleep or lay in a communal crib—like a playpen,” Charrissa said. “When we met the orphanage's director, he saw the difference between our son and the others and even remarked on that.” Ivana was not only suffering from her condition, she was also dehydrated. During their stay, the Brownings were allowed two visits per day and began sneaking her juice and snacks to build her strength. “It was heartbreaking because some of the children realized that ours were coming home,” Charrissa said. “We'll always have a passion; it's

an overwhelming need.” In December 2010, they brought home Max and Ivana, now 13 and 12, and they immediately began to thrive. That first year with three new children with special needs was a difficult one, but they relied on their faith to help them through. “God called us to this. We had to rely on a strength that was bigger than us,” she said. The Wallaces: Fulfilling the Desire to Give a Child a Home Andrea and Matt Wallace always knew they wanted to adopt. Although they already had a large family—eight children with seven at home between the ages of 3 and 17—they had been foster parents in Washington. When they moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, however, the state's foster system did not allow them to continue fostering because of their family size. After the rejection, a friend of Andrea's referred her to Reece's Rainbow. Once she got more involved in the online adoption community, she learned about the plight of orphaned children with medical needs. “It's such an eye opener to see the neglect and abuse that goes on,” Andrea said.

One day, in her social news feed, a video posted showed a 15-year-old boy, Dima, with cerebral palsy. The post was from Maya's Hope, another online nonprofit that advocates for orphaned children. Andrea knew he was the one, and the family has been learning about their future adoptive son and brother through the organization for the past year and a half. “I saw the video and felt that was the child we needed to help,” Andrea said. Her family required little convincing. “They're excited to help give a family to someone. They've been a part of the process and have seen the challenges.” International adoption is not without its challenges. Because of delays in the process beyond their control, some of the paperwork they had filed expired, causing a cascade of expirations for other work filed as well. Andrea has raised money by selling her crochet work at the farmers market and online plus raffling a friend's quilt. In addition, they have taken a personal loan to cover the costs and have a family sponsorship on Reece's Rainbow where donors can contribute.

“THERE ARE A LOT OF KIDS WHO ARE ALONE IN THIS WORLD,” ANDREA SAID. “IF YOU'RE RELIGIOUS, PRAY. IF NOT, THINK ABOUT IT. TRY TO DONATE OR SPONSOR—THINK OF WAYS TO HELP.”

The Wallace's are days away from hearing whether they are cleared for travel to finalize the adoption. How to Help Not everyone can change a child's life through adoption, but they can still make a difference by supporting organizations and families who adopt. Donations don't have to be financial. Friends can donate time or offer clothes and supplies as they would with a new baby. Or, sponsor a child on social media by posting their story. “There are a lot of kids who are alone in this world,” Andrea said. “If you're religious, pray. If not, think about it. Try to donate or sponsor— think of ways to help.” Charrissa Browning echoed the sentiment: “Adoption is not for everyone, but everyone can do something.”

The Wallaces know that their future son has some developmental delays and a language barrier but are prepared to welcome and care for him.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

“We have some special needs in our family and have been researching special services, too. We're also learning about his culture, religion and learning the language, too,” she said. “We homeschool, so I'll work with him. We know he has some delays which might be institutional, but we won't know more until we get there.”

et’s face it. Even if you love your job and look forward to going to work each day, we all anticipate the arrival of the weekend. Early in the week, we start looking ahead. Is the weather going to be nice? We may plan for a hike or a day at the beach. Chilly and rainy? We can finally pick up that book we started months ago and have yet to finish. But as Friday approaches, reality hits. Lists of chores and errands start to ruin our plans. Honestly, all it takes is a little more planning and you will reclaim your weekend! Here are some tips on how to get started (and right in time for summer fun).

Weekend! HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR WEEKEND

By Patty Hutchens • Spread your chores throughout the week. It may be the last thing you want to do after a day at work, but try doing a couple each night—or during the day if you work from home—and you will stress a lot less during the weekend. Clean the kitchen sink or stove top while dinner is in the oven. Keep cleaning supplies handy in your bathroom to do a quick clean every so often. Put in a load of laundry in the morning and finish it up in the evening. • Order your groceries or meals online. If you live somewhere that has grocery delivery through an online ordering system, try it out and see how it works for you. Many are free or have free coupons, and those who do charge do so for a minimal fee. Isn’t your time worth at least that? For weekday meals, try one of the many online delivery services. BlueApron and Hello Fresh are just two of the more popular services, but there are many out there. Do your research and try them out! These time-saving and fresh meals will help free up time during the week to get more done around the house. • Don’t go at it alone. You can’t be expected to do it all on your

own. Assign your children chores that are appropriate for their age. Set a good example and turn off the TV and have everyone do their chores at the same time. You’ll be amazed at how quickly things are accomplished when working as a team! • Don’t expect perfection. We all want to live in a clean, orderly place, but sometimes that is not the reality. Accept the fact that some rooms may not be exactly how you would like them. After all, there are memories waiting to be made! • Make your weekend plans ahead of time. It’s easy to decline invitations and put off the fun things when we think we just have too much to do on the weekends. Try planning ahead and schedule activities so that you are more likely to follow through. When the weekend is over, you will be glad you did! Of course, there is also the caveat of planning too much. Be intentional in what you choose to do and be true to you and your family with your time.

• Set goals. We often think of goal setting as things we want to accomplish in our professional lives or things we need to accomplish in general. Now that summer is here, how about setting some specific goals of activities you want to engage in or adventures you want to do with your family or friends. Make a “bucket list” of things you would like to do that do not require a lot of travel time. Is there a nearby campground that you would like to spend a night? Possibly there is a bike trail you have yet to explore. • Plan and plan some more. Whether it is meal planning or making a list of things to accomplish during the week, planning ahead and making lists are key. No longer will you spend time wondering, “What am I going to make for dinner?” or have to stop at the store to pick something up on the way home. • Don’t forget Friday. Yes, you may be a bit tired from a long week but remember that Friday nights are what gets your weekend off to the right start. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and you can make it fairly simple. Maybe it’s a family pizza and movie night at home. Or you can take an opportunity to pamper yourself with a nice long bath. • Invest in yourself. Many, especially moms, tend to spend most of their time taking care of others before taking care of themselves. It’s important to realize the more you take care of yourself, the more energy you have to also care for those whom you love.

all it takes is a little more planning and you will reclaim your weekend GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Now that summer is here, how about setting some specific goals of activities you want to engage in or adventures you want to do with your family or friends

• Take a break from work. With the advancement of technology, many of us tend to “just do a quick check of our work email” over the weekend. But as many know, one thing can lead to another and before we know it we are working on a proposal, doing research, emailing clients and more. If need be, turn off notifications for the weekend and take away any temptation you have that may draw you into the work mode. If you work from home, keep the computer off and out of sight. Focus on what is important in that moment—you, your family and friends. Weekends should be time to relax and rejuvenate, but the reality is they have turned into a whirlwind for many. Be intentional with how you are spending your time, plan ahead and by all means give yourself permission to relax and enjoy yourself!

WEEKENDER TRIPS TO SATISFY THE SOUL BY COLIN ANDERSON

W

e can’t always get away on a full weeklong vacation, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t find a long weekend in which to explore a new destination. Take an extra day or two off this summer and check out one of our favorite places for a long weekend getaway. Missoula, Montana Millions of people travel to Western Montana each summer, and Missoula is the perfect spot from which to explore. Glacier National Park lies just two and a half hours north, but if you don’t want to make the drive and fight the crowds, a trip down the Bitterroot Valley or up to Flathead or Seeley Lake will leave you speechless. Back in town the Clark Fork, Bitterroot and Blackfoot rivers all offer ample opportunities for a leisurely float in a tube or raft. Avid fly fishermen come from all around in search of monster rainbows, browns and cut throat, and there are several shops that supply guides and local river conditions for those who want to go at it alone. Downtown Tonight happens Thursday evenings and brings together local food trucks and caterers, live music and a beer and wine garden featuring locally made offerings. It’s adjacent to the city’s trail system, and visitors can watch kayakers and surfers ride Brenan’s wave or take a stroll up and down the riverbank. The ‘M’ Trail is a moderately difficult hike, mostly due to elevation, that offers a great view of the entire Missoula valley from the top. After a long day out exploring you can relax at one of the city’s many fine breweries. Big Sky, Bayern and Kettle House are pioneers in the craft beer revolution and are now joined by Highlander, Draught Works and Big Burn in the ever-expanding industry. Big Sky offers a summer outdoor concert series that includes The Barenaked Ladies, Avett Brothers and Luke Bryan, among others. Kettlehouse also opened its own amphitheatre along the Blackfoot River and welcomes The Flaming Lips, Primus and Sheryl Crow. hundreds of miles of shoreline are available for folks to explore. Start your trip with an up-close look at one of the largest power generators in the entire country. Five hundred and fifty feet high and more than 5,200 feet in length, the dam took most of a decade to construct. According to the National Parks Service, there is enough concrete poured that you could build a road from Seattle to Miami with the material. The visitor center is open just about every day, and 50-minute guided tours are available on the hour starting at 10am May through Labor Day. The building of the dam created Lake Roosevelt, which stretches some 150 miles from Grand Coulee to up near the Canadian border. The best way to see this amazing area is by boat. Tow yours with you or look to rent from marinas found along different points of

the lake. Couples or families can also rent highend houseboats on trips ranging from three to seven nights. Some boats are up to 80-feet long, contain five bedrooms, Jacuzzis, outdoor barbecue, satellite TV and everything else you would expect at a fine hotel or vacation rental. For those without a vessel, tent and RV camping can be found at nearby Spring Canyon Campground and dozens of other locations as you travel along the water. There are plenty of beaches for kids to splash and play, and Central Washington typically gets more than 300 days of sunshine each year. You’ll find open space, quiet and plenty of places to dip your toes on this relaxing getaway. Walla Walla, Washington No need to fly to Napa Valley to experience some of the best wines in the country. The

exploding popularity of Washington wines has created a wine mecca in Walla Walla like no other. Found seemingly in the middle of farmlands in the far southeast corner of the state, first-time visitors are surprised to see a town of such rich history and sophistication. While wine has always been a primary focus of visitors to the region, there are now 120 wineries located in town and the surrounding valleys. While it might sound overwhelming on where to start, there are several local resources to help plan the perfect tasting day for your group. The Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance (WallaWallaWine.com) breaks down wineries by region and offers many suggested tour routes. For those wanting to stay on foot, book a room at the historic Marcus Whitman Hotel. Downtown is packed with dozens of tasting rooms meaning you won’t have to stroll but a

block or two before you find your next stop. Many wineries are located on the outskirts of town and have created large beautiful rooms overlooking vineyards and the surrounding hills. Shuttle companies can taxi you between several locations in town cars, limousines or even party buses so you won’t have to worry about driving. Some of the more unique locations include a winery with an adjacent 5-hole golf course you can play while you sip, the old school house and tasting rooms brought to life in converted airplane hangars. You’ll find everything from ultra casual to formal reservations only. By the end of the trip you’ll have found a new appreciation for one of Washington’s biggest industries and most likely a case or two coming back with you to enjoy the rest of the summer.

Train for

an Event

Summer is the prime time for fun runs, 5ks, marathons, triathlons, swimming events and much more! If you’ve never experienced the joy and satisfaction of competing in—and completing—an endurance race, it is a feeling that can be compared to no other. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or a novice, it’s time to get training. The best way to accomplish what you’ve started is by starting off small with a shorter race. Once you’ve undertaken your first competition, keep training, and by the end of summer, you’ll be ready to conquer a more intense event.

Spelunking

EXPERIENCE IT!

Whether you’re young or just young at heart, exploration is ingrained in our nature. That sense of wonder never leaves us as we grow older, and what better way to feed this sense of wonderment than through spelunking. For those unfamiliar with the term, essentially, spelunking—also referred to as caving—is for the adventurous, as you’ll be exploring caves. It is important to not only be cautious but to go into this adventure prepared. Equipment such as a helmet, bright flashlight, hiking boots and first aid kit are strongly recommended, and it’s best to bring a friend along.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

Sampling Spokane CITY SHAPING UP AS CULINARY DESTINATION BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY LAUREN DENOS

W

hen I left the suburbs of Minnesota at the age of 18 for the mountains of Western Montana, I knew I had my life figured out. Who didn’t their first three months of officially becoming an adult? I was going to get a degree in journalism, do sports talk radio and live out my days casting flies in the Bitterroot Valley in summer and riding snow-capped peaks all winter long. Then along came a girl from small town, Idaho. Things started looking serious and after four years of dating, she informed me she was going to pursue a graduate degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane. I’d only been to the Lilac City for a couple of concerts and to use the airport, and the idea of leaving Montana wasn’t my favorite at the time. She enrolled and I stayed put for a year, pouting mostly about leaving what I’d come to call my new home. When it eventually became clear that to make the relationship work I would need to move, I reluctantly packed up my few belongings, rented a U-Haul and committed to living in a state I had never spent more than a day in. Eleven years later I find myself loving my life as a Spokanite and have a hard time seeing myself living anywhere else. Over the past two decades the city has transformed and flourished, and the energy around town is nearing an all-time high. Since Gonzaga’s improbable run to the Elite 8 in 1999, the University has more than doubled its enrollment, and the recent addition of a University of Washington Medical School has given the city a youthful feel. In a downtown where entire blocks were abandoned not long ago, hotels, apartments, boutiques and eateries now dominate the old brick buildings. With investment in downtown, new small business owners and professional opportunities comes demand for more dining and entertainment options, and this is where Spokane is really starting to become its own destination. When I found myself here in the mid-2000s, there were just three breweries in town; only one distributed while the other two were nano

operations inside of restaurants that only served on site. Today there are more than two dozen, a thriving wine tasting scene, locally roasted coffee and an ever-evolving restaurant scene that is attracting James Beard nominees and Top Chef contestants to plant their roots in this evergrowing community. If you want a true taste of what the Spokane region has to offer in the way of incredible foods, look no further than the second annual CRAVE! Food and Drink Celebration, held July 12 through 15. While Spokane has no shortage of dining and tasting festivals, CRAVE! truly stands alone in the quality of the presentations, opportunities to learn from some of the top chefs in the region and from across the country, and the variety of tasting opportunities during the event. CRAVE! is the brainchild of one of the Spokane area’s most iconic chefs and restaurant owners—Adam Hegsted. A Pacific Northwest native, Hegsted graduated from Northwest Culinary Academy and Art Institute of Seattle. He is a James Beard regional semi-finalist and was invited to cook at the annual Beard Foundation Dinner, an honor that chefs from around the country strive for. He is owner of the Eat Good Group which has restaurants in Spokane that include the wildly popular

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Wandering Table and Gilded Unicorn and has also recently branched into North Idaho with the openings of Farmhouse Kitchen and Silo Bar in Sandpoint and Republic Kitchen and Tap House in Post Falls. The group’s newest endeavor, Incrediburger & Eggs, offers very reasonably priced quick-serve burgers and breakfast sandwiches with unique twists on the classics. Having built connections with the restaurant community regionally and from his travels nationally, Hegsted knew it was time for Spokane to put its name out there and celebrate the great cooks and regional ingredients the area has to offer. On any day throughout CRAVE! you’ll find the most talented local chefs as well as others from across the border in Idaho and Montana. Hegsted has even invited guest chefs from as far away as San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Vancouver. As CRAVE! is a four-day event, you can expect variety and something different with each session. You can purchase tickets to a single event, multiple events or all-access VIP which gets you into every tasting and special post-event celebrations. CRAVE! kicks off Thursday, July 12 with a Seafood Bash. Dozens of stations will be set up both indoors and out at the CenterPlace Regional Events Center in Spokane Valley. Guests

Our taste buds are tingling can wander from booth to booth and can sample from as many chefs as they so please, as often as they please. Once inside, your ticket gets you unlimited sampling during the event of both food and drink, so there’s nothing additional to purchase during your session. Chefs prepare a dazzling array of tastes using fresh seafood as well as local trout and even sturgeon. Grand Tasting events Friday and Saturday allow chefs the freedom to present their favorite bites, and locally made wine, beer and spirits are also available to pair with your delicious dishes. There are demonstrations you can attend, and live music will keep the energy up all weekend long. While the majority of the events are for those 21 and older, Sunday morning is a family friendly brunch theme, so if you are still hungry, bring the kids for a delicious finish to a great weekend of culinary celebration. Tickets to all events are on sale now with early bird rates currently available. Packages include individual sessions, multiple sessions or all-

inclusive all weekend access. You can purchase tickets, find out more about lodging partners and see a list of participating restaurants at CraveNW.com. CRAVE! is a prime example of a town on the rise. Spokane is drawing its growing population from all walks of life. Young adults are checking out the multiple schools, young families are finding professional opportunities with affordable housing and empty nesters are leaving larger metropolitan areas for a more relaxed pace that still offers much of the entertainment, food and drink they are accustomed to. With rivers, lakes, parks and trails in and around town and mountains not far off in the distance, outdoor recreationalists are finding ample opportunity to explore while driving less than 90 minutes from their home. Being part of a citywide revitalization is exciting and something that should be celebrated. If you haven’t seen Spokane in some time, make CRAVE! your reason to see all that’s happening. You’ll be treated to incredible food and drink, beautiful summer weather and an opportunity to explore all the area has to offer. You’ll see why so many are making Spokane their new home.

FOOD & DRINK

Same-Day Garlic and Rosemary Loaf Ingredients:

Courtesy of Millville Pizza Co. This recipe makes 1 loaf at about 475 grams.

Materials: • Bread proofing basket • Dutch oven • Cooling rack

Bulk Fermentation: 5 hours Proof Time: 2 hours

• 2 ¼ cups white flour (500 grams) • 1 ½ cups water (90°F) (350 grams) • 1 tbsp. salt (scant) (13 grams) • ¼ tsp. (scant) instant dry yeast (0.8 grams) • ¼ cup cut raw garlic (¼ cubes) • 1 tbsp. minced rosemary

Sample Schedule: First mix at 6am, second mix at 6:30am, divide and shape into loaves Method: at 11:30am and bake at 1:30pm.

First Mix - In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 ¼ cups of white flour (preferably 00) with 1 ½ cups water (90°F). Cover and let rest for 30 minutes. Second Mix - Sprinkle 1 tbsp. salt, ¼ tsp. (scant) instant dry yeast, ¼ cup cut raw garlic and 1 tbsp. minced rosemary evenly over the flour/water mix. Mix by hand. Gently stretch and fold dough, working around the bowl so all sides are stretched and folded. After completing one full circle of stretch and fold, pinch dough 6 to 8 times to thoroughly combine the yeast and salt with the flour/water mix. Repeat this step three times. Fold - Stretch and fold twice more over the next 1 ½ hours (see above for stretch-and-fold description). Do not pinch dough after second mix! Cover and let rest at room temp for 3 ½ hours. Shape - Dust one proofing baskets with flour or semolina. Shape dough into a medium-tight ball. Proof - Cover and set dough in a warm area for 2 hours. Remember to begin heating oven 1 ½ hours after proof so the oven is heated at 2 hours. Preheat oven to 450°F with Dutch oven inside from start. Bake - Bake loaf in Dutch oven for 22 minutes. Remove from Dutch oven and bake for additional 12 minutes. Repeat for second loaf.

f it’s fresh goods you’re after this summer, the Waterfront Farmers Market is where you will find them. Its location in Skansie Brothers Park allows you to get there by foot, car, boat, paddle, transit and trolley, and a wide variety of fresh foods, artisan crafts, goodies and live entertainment await you. Now in its fourth season, the Downtown Waterfront Market is continuing to gain in popularity. In fact, hours are being extended this year with the market opening up at 1pm instead of 3pm and going until 7pm each Thursday in June through the end of August. “The park has tables, chairs, and benches that are perfect for sitting and eating, visiting with friends, listening to the live music and just enjoying the ambiance of the Market,” said Market Manager Heidi Gerling. As you stroll through the wonderful setting, you’ll notice traditional booths featuring fresh Washington-grown produce and locally sourced fresh catch as well as all-natural meats.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

104

Other vendors will be selling flowers and succulents, salsas and dips, and sweet treats. “There are many new vendors and products to come and check out, such as shellfish, baked goods and much more,” said Gerling. Cash is accepted at all booths with many also taking debit- and credit-card transactions. EBT and SNAP users can also use funds on many of the fresh goods found in the market. There are weekly activities for kids, live musicians, demonstrations from local chefs as well as prepared foods you can snack on while you wander. A relaxing stroll in one of Gig Harbor’s favorite parks is a great weekly summer tradition. You can pick up something fresh for dinner knowing it was grown or sourced not far away, and you might even find new foods to try out in your favorite recipes.
