Don‟t use a Din eyeshaft with a non Din Towing jaw Fittings (e.g. tailgates, hatches etc.) – these and any load on the trailer must be properly secured Tow on the pin, Brake on the jaw If it’s not approved, it‟s not covered! Ensure your jockey wheel is tightened and lodged so as to allow safe operation of brakes under all circumstances When turning, allow more room when towing Reversing – Use the opposite lock to direction required, DO NOT allow trailer to jack-knife Wing Mirrors – Use extended ones if towing a wide trailer Snaking – If your trailer starts to snake DO NOT brake. Slow down gradually Coupling locks – always use one approved by the manufacturer Pitching – Check the nose weight of the trailer, excessive nose weight is dangerous Spare wheel for trailer – check its condition before setting off, always carry a spare Trailer parking – fully apply brakelever and chock the wheels

Maintaining your trailer – although an MOT is not yet mandatory, it is important to service your trailer regularly. It is a legal requirement to ensure your trailer is roadworthy Drop plate – should only be used to lower a towball, never to raise one. Height of ball should be between 350 and 420mm Wheel nut torque setting – consult trailer manufacturer for correct setting Suspension aids – Use only approved ones Brakes – Any brakes fitted must work, they need regular adjustment to maintain efficiency Trailer Gross Weight – Make sure your vehicle is capable of towing the trailer safely, consult your vehicle handbook or manufacturer if unsure, DO NOT GUESS Tyres – These are subject to the same laws as the tyres on a car. Check pressures regularly Lights – These are subject to the same laws as your car and must work Number Plate – It must be to the legal standard and must by law match the towing vehicle Breakaway cables – ALWAYS use the manufacturer‟s spare part as it has
