01 Multifunctionality in Changing Lives

As a part of my master’s thesis work, I designed an apartment building with multifunctional dwellings for small housing communities. The design principles are derived from the literature on multifunctional housing, from which examples of how multifunctional housing can be implemented are taken. The ability of housing to respond to changing housing needs is called adaptability. Adaptability can answer to the problems of housing usability, which is part of the current debate on housing design. A lack of adaptability can prematurely end the life cycle of a dwelling, even if the building is technically sustainable.

02 Rehabilitation intervention in Eixample
Urbanism
Urban design I 2022

The task was to design a public square and a neighbourhood facility inside an existing, pre-determined block in Eixample in Barcelona. I decided to intervene inside two plots, in order to create a public square and to achieve circulation through the whole block. The neighbourhood facility is stuated inside the shell of an old aparment building, allowing circulation to happen through the ground level. In the design I aimed to respect the identity of the existing place, as well as the communal needs of the residents in the area.

03 Natural light study
Housing/Interior design
Course on Natural Lighting 2021
In this task the challenge was to create an architecturally interestingly lit space where the use of light is high-quality. The prerequisite was that, based on the room, only light with natural light at bright times. The location of the design was a residential building in Kalasatama, Helsinki.

The movement of the sun on the longest day of the year, 21.6.
Most of the light enters the building from this direction, when the surrounding urban structure is taken into account.
At this point, I designed a bay window and the project’s main view window, from which the winter sun can also enter.
Extremely close to the facade there is another building which reduces the amount of light significantly and makes it difficult to achieve privacy. For this reason, I designed a bay window with a skylight for this wall. The upward-facing skylight protects privacy and brings light from the zenith, regardless of the position of the sun.

The task was to learn about the case study house and model it. The Eames House designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1949 was chosen as my example house, which I modeled with ArchiCAD and rendered on Enscape.

1. Modeling of all structures used in the Eames House.
2. Modeling of the most essential structures of the Eames House, which are H-pillars and trusses. The structure is partially stiffened by a concrete slab embedded underground.

With the help of sections, I studied the essential structural points of my own design work. The sections are from a residential house I designed on another course where the arch structure was a central part. I ended up researching how an arch lied of brick could work in Finland’s climate.
I learned that the arch is, in general, a structurally efficient solution because the arch supports itself. Brick as a building material can naturally be combined with an arch, and brick is easy to recycle and ages beautifully.

The task was to design a cafe and exhibition pavilion in Espoo’s Karhusaari. Since Karhusaari is an exceptionally beautiful natural environment, I focus on beautiful natural views towards forests and the sea in my work. On the building site I have chosen, there is an old rihi, which is included in the plan as an active part of the pavilion by converting the old building into an exhibition space. The other spaces are designed to stick to the side of the barn in a fan-like shape.
