PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND DIAGRAM

The project is designed with three stacked volumes that are shifted and rotated. Due to the 1000 square foot constraint, the slab on grade structure relies on central thick concrete walls as primary supports, allowing the other two volumes to cantilever outward. The program is divided by volume, one is a private residential area for the scientist, another holds mechanical and public spaces, and the top floor is dedicated to research, including an outdoor terrace for relaxation. On the west side, a lookout offers visitors a view of the beautiful forest.

In designing the university spaces, it was crucial to view the institution not just as a center for education and research, but also as a livable community that interacts with itself and its surroundings. To achieve this, the plinth shapes were derived from a field condition study and arranged to both challenge the urban grid and engage the downtown promenade adjacent to the property line. The concept behind the plinth was to feature a courtyard in the center, emphasizing the opportunity for students of different levels to interact and move freely from one side to the other. Additionally, a void in the northeast, near the café, was incorporated to allow people to appreciate the mural on the African American Advisory Alliance building. The tower sits on the west side of the plinth to provide shade during the summer months. In winter, students can access the second or third floor outdoor terraces to enjoy the sun. The tower features an exterior spiral staircase, allowing students to ascend to another level to meet friends or take in the scenic views of the mountain to the north. Within the studio, the space is divided by the core into two main sections. The double-height area within the studio promotes openness and encourages social interaction among students by allowing them to view other studio spaces.

The main idea of this project was to create spatial environments by incorporating rotating planes on the ground. The project was primarily made of concrete and glass, with wooden screens. It has two primary entrances, one from W 43RD PL, and one that is from Degnan Blvd.

The repositioning of the plane closest to the sidewalk had a profound impact, resulting in the expansion of the sidewalk area into a more spacious outdoor public realm. The diagonal orientation effectively guided visitors towards the art center, giving rise to an engaging and distinctive journey. The narrow passageway led visitors into the building , where the high ceilings extend to the top of the building. This provides visitors with a dynamic perspective, allowing them to view the lobby from both an elevated vantage point and from lower levels, promoting a sense of engagement within the space.
