The month of April will see the Indian travel trade throng to Dubai to attend the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2016. For those of you who don’t know, ATM is the largest travel trade exhibition in the Middle East and Asia. It is the hub for networking and relationship building in the travel world and attracts more than 36000 travel professionals from across the globe annually. This year mid-market travel has been selected as the official show theme. An appropriate move considering the rapidly growing influence of this sector and also apt because in spite of Dubai already being an extremely popular destination among tourists it still has very limited midmarket inventory. In fact, it is baffling why Dubai does not tap its latent tourism potential by investing in more middle-to-low cost hotels and thus catering to an even larger number of tourists. The reality is the world’s middle classes are rapidly growing, from India to China to Africa; the appetite of the masses to travel is on a steady rise. Already, low cost carriers frequently fly to the wondrous emirate and affordable rooms would only tempt more and more

tourists to choose Dubai instead of repeatedly frequenting affordable destinations in Asia. Also, the tens of millions transit passengers that pass through Dubai airport would surely stop to ‘Visit Dubai’ and ‘Discover All That’s Possible in Dubai’ given a economical opportunity. It is no longer a secret that the mid-category accommodation segment, catering to the emerging middle class traveller boom, is expected to be the fastest growing bracket not only in Dubai or the Middle East but worldwide. Not fully explored yet, the market holds tremendous potential. To give some perspective on the profitability of the sector one can note that up to 90% of travellers in Asia belong to the mid-market segment and this number is only expected to grow. It doesn't have to be said that we would all prefer to stay in sprawling five star luxury accommodations that are home to Michelin star restaurants, exquisite resort pools and award winning spas. Who wouldn't love to be spoilt with unique amenities like private butlers or a team of dedicated concierges to cater to their every whim? Unfortunately, the reality is most travellers cannot afford this opulence and it is about time the global tourism industry indulges the mid-market traveller. Ultimately, anyone who ignores them will be the loser. Soon there will be a room to suit every pocket. So travel near and travel far!

A lot of emphasis is being laid on MidMarket Travel to stir growth in tourism industry across the world. It has become new battleground for the tourism industry. ATM 2016, which will take place at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre from April 25 to 28, 2016, will have mid-market travel as its official show theme. The selection of mid-market travel as its official show theme underlines the growing significance of midmarket travel in the Middle East as the region’s travel & hospitality sector looks for new opportunities. ATM 2016 will deliberate on the supply and demand sides of mid-market travel. Availability of midscale accommodation and services are considered key to mid-market travel. But why is the tourism industry discovering the virtues of Mid-Market now? Is it because of prolonged economic slowdown or saturation in the upscale-luxury travel market? The tourism industry has traditionally been focused on luxury segment. Because of its huge potential that remains largely untapped, Mid-Market travel segment has become very important. These travelers travel inside as well as outside their countries. There is no clear definition of Mid-market travel, but generally speaking MidMarket travelers can be identified as those who fly in economy class and stay in middle-priced branded hotels. These travelers are price-conscious and want value for their money. INDIAN SCENARIO The UNWTO has estimated that 50 million Indians will travel outbound by 2020, and their total spending on travel will reach US$28 billion. This will grow further with expansion of its middle class tourists. About 18 million Indians travelled outside the country in 2014. India today is one of the few fastest growing economies in the world, with its GDP growing at 7.5 per cent, which is expected to increase further. India’s travelling class and its Mid-Market travel segment are also growing with expansion of its middle class. India’s middle-class is expected to be half of its population by 2030. According to NCAER, population of India's middle class will be 267 million in 2016, and by 2025-26 the number of middle class individuals in India is expected to be more than double from the 2015-16 level to reach 547 million. Another estimate says that the number of middle class households in India will exceed 90 million by 2030, thus maintaining its current ranking as the world’s second largest middle class. Overall, MidMarket offers enormous opportunity for the Indian tourism industry and well as for foreign destinations. Major international hotel chains are focusing on Mid-Market segment in India. Currently, Mid-Market hotels constitute 29 % of the total hotel rooms in India and this will be the battleground for growth over the next decade. According to hospitality consultancy firm HVS, India would add 93,000 rooms to its present inventory of 1,14,000 rooms by March 2017. Of this, close to 50% new rooms will be in the mid-market segment. Indian hotel industry still has to go a long way to tap the huge potential of Indian Mid-Market segment

CHINESE SCENARIO China is home to the world’s largest middle class, which is still expanding. This has fuelled enormous growth in the number of outbound travel by the Chinese. According to Euromonitor International, 90 million outbound trips will be made by Chinese citizens in 2020. By 2030, this number is expected to reach almost 126 million, making China the largest outbound market overtaking the US, Germany, and the UK. According to the UNWTO, China is now the world’s largest outbound travel market and about 120 million Chinese people travelled overseas in 2015. Chinese outbound tourists are the top source of tourism expenditures. China's Mid-Market travel also offers immense opportunity for the tourism industry. Ever expanding Chinese middle class is also expanding the country’s mid- market travel segment, which offers huge growth opportunity for mid-market hotel brands. Chinese visitors are the highest-spending tourists in the world. They spent $215 billion abroad in 2015, 53% more as compared to their spending in 2014. They are expected to double their spending by 2020. The growing aspiration of China's emerging middle class to travel along with increased business travel will continue to drive outbound travel from China.

As Middle East travel and hospitality sector looks for new opportunities, MidMarket travel segment is being recognized a key growth segment. Not surprisingly ATM 2016 will focus on MidMarket travel. Recognizing the importance of Mid-Market, destinations like Dubai are encouraging investment into midmarket hotels through various policy initiatives. Mid-Market travelers from markets like China, India and Africa offer immense opportunities for destinations in South East Asia, Middle East and Europe. But is the tourism industry across the world wellequipped to tap the mid-market? One of the basic requirements of Mid-Market travelers is mid-priced quality budget hotels. Take the case of India. According to an industry estimate, India will require additional 180,000 hotel rooms by 2021 and about 65% of them will be required in the mid-market segment. According to HVS India, of the 93,000 hotel rooms being added to the existing 114,000 hotels by March 2017 across major Indian cities, almost 50 per cent will be in the Mid-Market and budget range as demand for Mid-Market hotels is increasing. “It begins with accommodation. The government should encourage entrepreneurs to build quality accommodation that caters to this segment of travelers. The role of the private sector in standardising

Turkey offers familiar ground and environment. Our cultures are quite similar. Our languages Turkish and Hindi share 9,000 common words, even though they come from different language groups. This is a testament to great cultural infusion between our countries and cultures. So, when an Indian comes here he will find a familiar culture. He will receive warm welcome and hospitality and feel like he has never left his home. This is our comparative advantage in tourism sector. Also, we are competitive in terms of our prices as compared to other countries in the sector. And, as I said we have very rich cultural heritage, and Indian tourists will find many similar and exotic things from an Indian point of view. We have oriental kind of landscapes and sightseeing places, along with ruins of ancient civilizations. We have the trail of the churches from the Christian era. So, it can address the curiosity of Indian tourists as well. We are providing different cultures for an incoming tourist, so that he will be more than satisfied to see such diversity in one country, just like India!

How important is the Indian outbound market for Turkey? What tourist influx does Turkey obtain? The outbound tourist market is very important for us because it is fast growing

INTERNATIONAL market. Overall, the average increase in Indian tourist arrivals in Turkey is 25%, which far above than the average growth in the Turkish tourism market, which is just 8-10%. So it is very promising for Turkish tourism. Indian tourists spend more as compared to other tourists from other countries, so they are very important segment of clientele for the tourism sector. We are hoping that the figures turn higher year after year. In 2015, around 1 lakh and 42 thousand tourists have visited Turkey, which corresponds to 10% increase as compared to 2014, which was 1 lakh 20 thousand. We hope this increase continues and we may host more and more Indian tourists.

How does Turkey’s visa service remain competitive? We have signed the contract with VFS Global on March 28, 2016 and they started processing Turkish visa applications on April 1, 2016. All the applicants can apply for visa via VFS Global center.

What about the first time travelers to Turkey? The applicants should examine the requirements of documents carefully and submit the visa application with complete documents and fee. Given that, our consulate section is eager to serve the increase the flow of tourists and open the avenue the direct exposure by their own eyes. We are very welcoming and facilitating for visa applications with full referral documents. So, my recommendation would be to examine the list of documents for visa application on our website carefully and submit the same well before time.

What are the upcoming things in Turkey and Hilton, Istanbul? To increase the visitor traffic, we are up for increasing the flight frequency from India to Turkey. At present, we have one flight per day from Istanbul to Delhi and Mumbai. We have to increase it with approval of Government of India. We are negotiating on this issue and we hope to

increase the flights from other prominent cities of India because Istanbul is very well-seated both as a tourist destination and as a transit to connect further destinations. Our current capacity is 70 million passenger per year and with completion of new airport in Istanbul, it will increase to 15 crore passengers per year. So, this is our effort to enhance tourism between our countries. The visa process is easy and we are ready to accommodate the tourists.

Finally, which place in India are you planning to go for a holiday in year 2016? India is a very diverse country and we can’t decide where to spend my holidays. But, few of the choices on mind right now are Kerala, Panaji (Goa), Himalayas, Shimla or Kolkata. Well, it is really hard to choose as it is Incredible India! (He smiles)

How many properties do you have in Turkey? In Istanbul, I am responsible from 3 properties of Hilton, namely – Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus and Hilton ParkSA Istanbul. In total, 1170 rooms, 60 meeting rooms, a big convention centre and 4 ballrooms.

What are the upcoming events you (Hilton) are planning? Well, it is the first time I am here in India and sure, it won’t be the last time post this visit. I am really enjoying this trip and like the colorful India, especially the Masala Chai in beverages. However, Turkish coffee is my all time favourite (she laughs). I believe it is very important to improve your relationship with

your clients, tour operators and corporate companies who would like to come to Turkey. We like to talk to each other, we like to smile all the time, we like to share things and we should get closer as we have more common things. Then, of course, Indian culture and people, we should focus on their needs and expectation to provide customised service to Indian guests. For example, Indian people prefer to eat only Indian food. Therefore, we have just taken good care of it and signed a contract for them. We are opening very soon an Indian restaurant in Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus move to very soon to the end. After intensive training in culinary arts from L’EcoleVantan in Japan in 2010, he started his career in as Line Cook for Ristorante Aso in Daikanyama, Japan. After spending two years at his first assignment, he moved to Yellowtail in Las Vegas and joined the restaurant as Chef de Partie. Chef Tomoyuki believes that food isn't only just about pleasing one's palate but it can also be the center of one's memories. The desire to not just prepare good food but lasting memories inspired him to become a chef.

Debra Meiburg MW Cathay Pacific Wine Consultant Debra Meiburg has been appointed as the wine consultant for Cathay Pacific Airways. Master of Wine, she is a highly regarded Hong Kong-based wine expert, has become the most recent addition to the airline’s wine panel. Debra Meiburg MW is an award-winning author, educator and international speaker who holds one of the top honours in the wine world, Master of Wine. This is the first time she has teamed up with an airline to select fine wines for the enjoyment of passengers on board. Born in California and a resident of Hong Kong for more than 25 years, Debra has extensive writing, judging and educational experience in the wine world. She was ranked seventh in The Drinks Business magazine’s list of the “Most Powerful Women in Wine” and was named as one of the “7 People to Watch” by Decanter Magazine.

Rohan Kulkarni Sales Manager for Trafalgar in India Rohan Kulkarni has been appointed as Sales Manager for Trafalgar in India. A commerce graduate from Mumbai, Rohan had done his MBA in Travel & Tourism from Kuoni Academy. He has previously worked with organisations like SOTC Kuoni and Thomas Cook India amongst others. With more than 5 years of experience, his new role will entail servicing and engaging the travel trade partners and grow the brand. A keen footballer, he loves to spend spare time with his family and listing to Retro music.
