The hidden dangers of Bill – 63

The First reading of the 104 pages of Bill 63, during the First Session of Canada’s 44th Parliament on February 26, 2024, seemed well. The Bill purported to amend the Criminal Code, the Canadian Human Rights Act, and An Act respecting the mandatory reporting of Internet child pornography by persons providing Internet service…”. The problem with legislation is always in the hidden agenda behind it.

There are seven areas the bill addresses.

a. Intimate content communicated without consent

b. Content that sexually victimizes a child or revictimizes a survivor

c. Content that induces a child to harm themselves

d. Content used to bully a child

e. Content that foments hatred

f. Content that incites violence

g. Content that incites violent extremism or terrorism

It all looks good on the surface, right?

In a presser, Minister of Justice, Arif Virani, said “I am terrified of the dangers that lurk on the internet for our children.” We all agree. Carol Todd, whose 15-year-old daughter Amanda committed suicide after intimate images of her were shared online, thinks the legislation may have helped to

spare her daughter. Michael Geist, University of Ottawa law professor, sees other countries moving in this direction and says “I think it does better facilitate some of the shared cooperation and some of the ability to enforce.”

The issue is not the pornography but the fact that it is deliberately tied to hate speech.

David Fraser, a privacy lawyer who teaches on internet and media law at Dalhousie University, doubts that the legislation is charter compliant. He thinks that the new digital commission designed to oversee the legislation outside the courts has “stunning and likely unconstitutional powers.” He focuses on the Digital Safety Commission as regulator, the Digital Safety Ombudsperson as advocate, and the Digital Safety Office as a bureaucracy. He says that the legislation which appears to be about protecting children is often “a pretext for regulatory actions which lead to overreach.”

Christine Van Geyn, Litigation director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation which fights for fundamental constitutional freedoms, sees the first part of the bill as “designed to inoculate the legislation against the second part which is online hate.” The definition of hatred is “highly subjective.” Instead of hate being an aggravating offense,

as in the past, this bill makes it a separate offense which could carry a life sentence. And worse yet, the bill provides a “preventative criminal restraint on suspected future speech… If the attorney general and a judge agree that someone might commit hate speech in the future than that person can be subject to major restrictions on their liberty. This might include imprisonment or house arrest if resisted.

In 2014, Van Geyn points out that the Supreme Court said that “hatred is only the most extreme manifestation of the emotion captured by the words detestation and vilification and that only that type of speech can be outlawed without violating section 2b of the charter which guarantees the right of freedom of expression.” Can a sermon on what it means to be male or female be considered hatred? Can a message speaking against gender reassignment surgery violate the intent of this law? Can a speech advocating the rights of parents over their children open one up for complaint?

Fraser says that “any Canadian can submit a complaint to the commission which can remove content during an investigation. In a civil court, if the commission thinks it has reasonable grounds to believe the content is harmful it must be permanently removed.” The commission has the power to compel persons to provide any written or oral evidence – “or any other documents the commission considers necessary.” The group can take evidence through oath and affidavit,

“even if that evidence would be inadmissible in a court of law.” Can we expect an avalanche of frivolous complaints from persons who embrace values different than ours?

With the Digital Safety Commission functioning outside due process and able to enforce legislation on the basis of “a reasonable grounds to believe,” with no oversight or right of appeal, it leaves some with little trust on what can happen. Especially, because of the conflict between values around children and gender issues.

Online platforms are given the responsibility of policing their content and this puts content creators at the mercy of social media providers. The legislation hopes for selfpolicing among individuals and organizations but the fines of $10 million or 6 percent of global revenue against media platforms may make providers overly sensitive to what might be viewed as hate speech. The balance of privacy rights, users’ expression, and the operator’s legal obligations, need further examination. Public guidelines and standards of conduct will have to be developed.

Todd says, “even if we have an act, it doesn’t mean that as adults, as Canadian citizens, as parents, as educators, as law enforcement, that we can stop talking about it and teaching others and educating.”

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, after studying the bill has concluded: “We have serious concerns and reservations

BC Christian Academy – 500 Students

BC Christian Academy (BCCA) recently marked a significant milestone in its journey of faith and education, celebrating the enrollment of 500 students during the schoolwide Easter Chapel on March 13th with all the staff and students from kindergarten to grade 12. This momentous occasion not only reflects growth but also underscores the unwavering commitment of BC Christian Academy to its core values.

In the words of Mr. Ian Jarvie, the Head of School, “Today we celebrate a momentous landmark in BC Christian Academy’s history. In fact, we have reached 503 students from K-12 as of today! What a blessing it is to share with our school community God’s blessings and faithfulness over the past 32 years!” With heartfelt appreciation, Mr. Jarvie acknowledged the divine blessings and the steadfast support of the community, which have been instrumental in this remarkable surge in enrollment.

The journey to this milestone began decades ago, rooted in BCCA’s steadfast commitment to its foundational princi-

ples: Christ, Community, and Compassion. Since its inception in 1992, the school has diligently nurtured these values, shaping its identity and purpose. Mr. Jarvie reflected on this journey, emphasizing how the focus on these values has not only attracted new families but also fostered a deep sense of belonging and unity among the BCCA community.

As BCCA continues to flourish, Mr. Jarvie reiterated the school’s commitment to remain faithful to its calling, steadfastly pursuing its vision of “Equipping Students to Impact the World for Jesus”

With hearts full of gratitude to God, whose unwavering guidance has faithfully authored BCCA’s story and the community whose steadfast support has made this milestone possible, BCCA embarks on the next chapter of its journey in shaping hearts and minds for generations to come. Education at a crossroads: COMPASS and the classical model

The education of children ought to be among the most paramount of concerns for Christians. This has always been true, but perhaps it is particularly so at this point in history. Many Christians are aware that at least two-thirds of churched children tend to leave the church in or after university. There are likely multiple factors involved in this lamentable state of affairs, but one thing that seems clear in the studies, and to me personally, is that these children have not been properly equipped to face the assault upon their minds by the subtle pagan philosophies which abound in higher learning. They haven’t been taught a robust Christian way of thinking which starts unapologetically with creation, contends with the significance of original and personal sin, and then considers how the work of Jesus Christ is not only the ground for their personal redemption from sin, but for the redemption and glory of the entire world as Christ’s kingdom is advanced.

These ideas are captured by our mission at COMPASS Community Learning Centres, which is to “Educate the whole child in the whole truth: reclaiming our culture for Christ’s kingdom.”

Due to the assaults upon the mind in our culture, the need for a robust Christian education has perhaps never been greater, but the good news is that there are patterns and practices in history which can provide us a template. We can “stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths” (Jer 6:16). In the time of the Reformation, Martin Luther faced similar concerns. He wrote and advocated publicly for the reformation of the universities, for the study of the Scriptures above other philosophical systems, and for both boys and girls to be taught to read.

Bill-63 continued from page 2

about the inclusion of certain types of alleged hate speech within Part One of the Bill, some of the proposed amendments to the Criminal Code in Part Two and in particular, the re-enactment of s. 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act

In one letter to the leaders of Germany, he wrote,

“It is not necessary to repeat here that the temporal government is a divinely ordained estate . . . The question is rather: How are we to get good and capable men into it? Here we are excelled and put to shame by the pagans of old, especially the Romans and Greeks. Although they had no idea of whether this estate was pleasing to God or not, they were so earnest and diligent in educating and training their young boys and girls to fit them for the task, that when I call it to mind I am forced to blush for us Christians, and especially for us Germans. Yet we know, or at least we ought to know, how essential and beneficial it is – and pleasing to God – that a prince, lord, councilman, or other person in a position of authority be educated and qualified to perform the functions of his office as a Christian should. Now if (as we have assumed) there were no souls, and there were no need at all of schools and languages for the sake of the Scriptures and of God, this one consideration alone would be sufficient to justify the establishment everywhere of the very best schools for both boys and girls, namely, that in order to maintain its temporal estate outwardly the world must have good and capable men and women. ”1

in Part Three. Because of the risks to freedom of expression, those sections require particularly careful consideration of freedom of expression, significant amendments, and should proceed much more slowly, if at all.”

As Luther states, we need to re-capture best practices, in some cases going back to the times of the Greeks and Romans, to teach children the history and Christian foundations of theology, science, mathematics, philosophy, logic, and more. This is the classical method – to interact with great thinkers and to fill not only their minds with great thoughts, but their hearts with wonder and beauty, and to instill in them virtues by careful cultivation, scriptural application, prayer, and bible memorization. We must show them that the Triune God is the foundation of every field, that Christ is the object of every endeavour, and that the Scriptures are sufficient not only unto salvation but as law unto the flourishing of all humanity.

COMPASS is a group of schools unapologetically committed to Christian education in this classical tradition. We eschew government funding to uphold our convictions and work with like-minded and generous churches in order to offer inexpensive education and raise up a generation of the faithful within a flood of compromise. We invite you to join us in this world-changing endeavour.

Inspiring Faith

A biblical worldview of the word of God (the Bible) will change your life

In the Old Testament, ‘word’ is used almost 1,000 times. The Hebrew meaning – to speak, to declare, to command, to promise, to warn. The written Word of God.

In the New Testament, the Greek word ‘logos’ is used 240 times. Defined as something said, subject or discourse, communication, a conception.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

“And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us; and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

Logos is the written word of God. Rhema is the revealed, or spoken, word of God. Rhema, a command, is used approximately 60 times. The significance of rhema (as distinct from logos) is exemplified in the injunction to “take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” Eph. 6:17, Here the reference is not to the whole Bible as such, but to the individual scripture which the Spirit brings to our remembrance for use in time of need, a prerequisite being the regular storing of the mind with Scripture.

Take – is an imperative, meaning a command for doing something.

Sword – the only offensive armour with all other armour being defensive.

Spirit – pneuma, invisible, like the wind, but very powerful – divine God.

God’s Word, living and powerful

“For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrows, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all thing are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” Hebrews 4:12,13

“For with God nothing will be impossible. Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word’. And the angel departed from her.” Luke 1:37, 38

In this passage of scripture, the word ‘nothing’ and the word ‘rhema’ have the same meaning. For Mary to become pregnant without a man was impossible.

All Scripture is from God

“All Scripture is God breathed and is profitable for doctrine, for convincing, for correction, for discipline in righteousness, that the man of God should be lifted up, being made fully complete to all good work by God.” II Timothy 3:16, 17. Though written by men, all of Scripture is divinely inspired (liter-

ally, God-breathed), and it is our authority and rule for faith and life. What can you do to become a more serious student of God’s Word, the Bible, so that you can be complete and equipped for every good work? If we stay standing on the inside, God will take care of the outside. If we do what we can do, God will do what we cannot do.

“The Word of God was not given for our information rather for our transformation.” ~ D. L. Moody

Apostasy in the last days. II Timothy 3

1“this you must be now for yourself knowing, that in the Last Day violent special times will be present. 2For men shall be loving themselves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemous, disobedience to parents, unthankful, unholy. 3Without natural affection, unalterable, false accuser (slanderers) no selfcontrol, fierce, despisers of God. 4Traitors, reactionary, are made self-directed pride, lovers of pleasure much more than lovers of God. 5Having a form of Godliness, but accepting no responsibility to His miracle power, so then also, from these stay away.” Lacking miracle power, lacking the Holy Spirit.

58 percent of Christians do not believe that the Holy Spirit is God. ~ Barna

Does it seem to you that we are living in perilous times?

Look at the world around you, as you read II Timothy, chapter 3, you probably see evidence of many of the vices described in times such as these, you must stand strong in the truth of God’s Word and have nothing to do with people who seem religious but do not exhibit true godliness or spiritual power.

Just as Paul predicted long ago when he wrote to Timothy we live in an unthankful and ungrateful generation. It seems the more people have, the less they appreciate. As believers, we are in the world, but we must strive not to be like it. The more others around us complain, the more we should express gratitude to God.

The Bible is:

1/3 history – the past 1/3 doctrine – the present 1/3 prophecy – the future

The books of the Bible were written at different times by 40 different authors, all inspired by the Holy Spirit, over a period of approximately 1,500 years. The oldest book of the Bible, according to most scholars, is either Genesis or Job, both thought to have been written by Moses and completed around 1450 BC. The newest book, Revelation, was

Guiding your spiritual journey with profound biblical wisdom

In a world where the clamour of daily life often overshadows the call of faith, many are left yearning for a deeper connection to their beliefs and a clearer understanding of the scriptures. If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re in the right place.

For

“To recognize and receive the wondrous truth of being Gods temple is the beginning of walking and living a supernatural life,” Michael Ellison

written around AD90. The books of the Bible were not being written continuously. For example, 400 years elapsed between the completion of the last book of the Old Testament, Malachi, and the beginning of the New Testament with Matthew. The ‘400 years of silence’ occurred because the Spirit of God did not inspire any Scripture during that time. Although Matthew’s gospel is placed first in the New Testament, it is believed that the first New Testament book written was actually the epistle of James, written around AD 44. The entire New Testament was written in about 50 years, from AD 44 to 90 or 95.

It is impossible to know how long it took each author to write his particular book. Scholars believe Moses wrote the first five books of the Old Testament between 1445 and 1405 BC. Paul’s letter to the New Testament churches, especially the shorter ones such as Philemon, may have been written in one sitting. The same can be said of II John and III John, which are very short letters written to specific individuals.

Each author wrote at the direction of the Holy Spirit who ‘breathed out’ Scripture to him. Peter explains this process: “prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” II Peter 1:21; II Timothy 3:16,17 All scripture is inspired (divinely breathed) by God.

Conclusion:

Example of Logos: The Deity of Christ “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” John 1:1

Example of Rhema: when a person receives Jesus Christ as Saviour, the Word of God becomes revealed and not just written. “But the Word of the Lord endures forever; now this is the Word which by the gospel was preached to you.” I Peter 1:25

The worst kind of famine

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, not a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord; and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord and shall not find it.” Amos 8:11,12

An Interview with Marvin Brubacher, of MentorLink Canada

Servant leadership is a command of God; as we seek to become more Christ-like in how we live our lives, we must learn to follow Jesus’ example. After Jesus washed His disciples’ feet in John 13: 14, He then said, “go and do likewise.”

Why? Jesus knew His position as Son in God’s Kingdom; He knew He was loved by God; He had nothing to gain or lose by doing this potentially embarrassing and humbling task – yet He did it to model serving others.

“No servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (John 13:16), Jesus teaches us. It’s a heart motive issue, from start to finish. By serving others in this way, Jesus was modeling what His followers should do.

Leadership, Jesus’ way, is not about position or power, but about love and responsibility. It’s not about control, but about humility and gentleness of spirit, caring for others with compassion. In addition, our brokenness before our King and Lord Jesus is a pre-requisite for learning to walk in true humility!

Marvin Brubacher tells his story

As the third son among seven children, Marv grew up in a Christian home in Clinton, Ontario. He learned at an early age to serve others, such as sweeping floors in his father’s shop, mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, and even doing roofing projects for his neighbours. He loved helping people! Eventually he went to Bible College, where he met his wife, Kay. Later he served as founder and President at Heritage Bible College, in Cambridge, Ontaro.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest

for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Mathew 11: 28-30

This verse is the only time in scripture that Jesus talks about his own heart’s motive. Notice that “gentle and humble in heart” is what a servant leader’s heart must become to find rest and cope with life’s burdens.

When Marv talks about his Mennonite childhood experience watching and sometimes handling horses, we learn what “take my yoke” actually means. He explains: “When two work horses are yoked together, there’s always a lead horse. The other horse follows. There’s a device we called “the evener” that shifts the load between the two horses. For example, if there’s a steep hill to climb the lead horse can carry a heavier load, just like Jesus offers to do, when we are yoked with Him.”

Sometimes people would say things like “it must be great to be the President of a Bible College!” Marv felt uncomfortable because he did not know how to respond. He knew salary, position, power were things they were thinking about, but he’d taken a cut in pay to become President, and his enormous workload worried him. It was great to see students transformed, but this did not seem to be the right response.

“I wrestled with God about what to say” he admitted. “Then one day it hit me. Why is it so great to be President? It’s because I am the only one at the school who gets to serve everyone! Deans serve faculty. Faculty serve students. Cafeteria staff serve those staying on campus. But as President, I serve them all! That’s what makes my position so special!

The privilege of serving people is what captures my heart; it is who I am, and what gives me my greatest satis-

Since

faction,” he explains.

Some Biblical Leadership Principle take-aways

1. Knowing God’s Presence and strength is with us, as we walk yoked with Jesus leading us in His authority, is a blessing we can receive here and now.

2. Ultimate rewards may not come in this life. Servant leaders look forward to one day hearing the words “well done, my good and faithful servant!”

3. Want blessed, solid relationships with those around you? Practice servant leadership! You’ll be amazed at how serving others opens, warms and transforms hearts!

In closing, Marv advises: “Get to know the people you are called to serve and serve them well! Each person is unique, but everyone is important! Remember, even little things you do for others count! Heart attitude is what makes all the difference. Don’t forget – when we serve others, we are serving and pleasing God!”

The main purpose of the holistic approach to home care is to help support seniors to age in health and wholeness, inspiring faith for everyday life. Holistic home care is an approach that encompasses the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a senior. Several studies have shown the positive effects of holistic care on various aspects of health and well-being. This human-centered approach to care is a great complement to traditional care. The first step in providing holistic care is to establish a therapeutic relation-

ship that is human-centered. This is essential to the building of trust between the client and caregiver. The whole needs of a person is treated- not just their symptoms. We offer this approach as a care philosophy to address the specific needs and preferences of each senior.

Qwanoes – Have you heard what God is doing at camp?

It seems like every day, there’s a new headline showing how broken, confused and lost our world is. Many in the younger generation are struggling like never before.

Christian camps such as Camp Qwanoes on Vancouver Island offer kids a chance to escape from the everyday and the perfect setting to discover life like no other in Christ.

If you are looking for a way to impact the lives of kids this summer, you need to hear about what God is doing at camp.

Here are a couple of stories from Qwanoes that show what happens when kids come to a place where they encounter the reality of God’s love:

A girl at a Jr. High camp said that her only relatives are her dad and a grandma. Her dad has told her that he doesn’t want her to be part of his new family’s life, so she is with her grandma and her grandma’s partner. After listening to the camp speaker, she said, “Now I understand why my family is the way it is… If my family wanted me, I wouldn’t need God.”

“Amy came to camp with an abundance of anger. She had attempted suicide quite a few times and was bitter at everything

Camp Squeah – Prayer

I have often struggled with the concept of prayer. Not that I’ve thought prayer wasn’t desired by God; prayer seemed like one of the ten commandments in every church I’ve attended. This is likely because I’ve wrestled with my concept of God the Father my whole life.

Why pray in supplication to an all-knowing, all-powerful God? Seems redundant if not an outright waste of time. If The Lord is not interested in prayer for its own sake (Matthew 6:8), and seems to know all we need (Matthew 6:32) what is the point? Over time, I’ve come to understand that the Lord is very much interested in my heart. But I don’t know my own heart and to do so, I must learn to connect with Him on an inti-

and everyone. After realizing Qwanoes was a safe place, she spent an hour crying and sharing about her pain. She wanted to get rid of the hurt and start living for God. She began closing doors to her past and forgiving people. She let God forgive her and the weight lifted from her and she left camp leaving all of her baggage behind. The harshness about her was gone, and her true spirit of gentleness and joy was shining through!”

At camp, kids discover hope. Many lifechanging decisions, including thousands of decisions to follow Christ, have been made in recent years. While campers meet new friends and try exciting activities like zipping over the ocean or bouncing on a water trampoline or playing laser tag in the forest, they encounter the truth that they matter and are loved unconditionally.

It takes a very large team of people to make camp happen. Qwanoes hopes to welcome over 4,000 kids this summer – and the potential is amazing. This summer, you are invited to be part of loving kids to life.

mate level. I must care to know the creator of my soul.

In an effort to aid my own debilitated view of prayer, I’ve created a liturgical aid to assist me in coming to the One who Loves my soul. They’re simple prayer cards. There is one card for every day and each has a focus: Thanksgiving, Confession, Supplication, Listening, Remembrance, Intercession & Praise. Under each title there’s a short list of words to help direct my focus. In this way I think of each day as a movement in connecting with God. It’s been a refreshing help to me and perhaps it may give your heart an idea of how to draw close to the One Who loves your soul.

Kurumbuka Leadership Solutions

The Kurumbuka Leadership Hub in Kigali, Rwanda, buzzed with energetic enthusiasm as 33 executive leaders from nine African countries gathered to embrace the academic challenge of prepping for the potential of being accepted into the Masters of Leadership degree with TWU. They gathered under the umbrella of the Abundant Leadership Institute (ALI) where they will prove their competency through 15 credits before entering as official TWU students. Another 14 students gathered in Uganda.

As a facilitator and the academic stream coordinator, recently returned from teaching at the centre, I was amazed to watch leaders from Burundi, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, celebrating in joint worship of the Jesus who is transforming their continent. The joy runs deep and the freedom to grow and learn is apparent.

Organizations like USAID, Youth for Christ, YWAM, Compassion International, Cornerstone Development Africa, Africa Restoring Bridges Initiative, Bethesda Hospital, Hope for Korah, B2 The World, Kuwasha, Acts4Water, Turame Community Finance, Irembo Peace Plan, and numerous schools, universities, and churches have sent their leaders.

Kurumbuka Leadership Solutions, which runs ALI for executive leaders and Trek for emerging leaders, is the brainchild of former TWU Vice President of Student Life, Richard Taylor. Taylor says, “I love TWU and I have a passion to invest in marginalized communities by empowering local African leaders through our Abundant Leadership Institute. The partnership creates a unique opportunity for some of the most inspiring Christian leaders on the African continent to multiply their impact.”

partners with TWU to train executive African leaders

Dr. Don Page, the founder of TWU’s Masters In Leadership Program is also on Kurumbuka’s board and overseeing curriculum development for ALI. He says “Because every organization rises and falls based on the quality of its leaders, this partnership is an exciting opportunity for emerging and executive leaders to get trained in proven ways for successfully taking their organizations forward.

“I’m so glad to be part of the ALI (Abundant Leadership Institute) academic stream,” Emannuel Mulinzi, of Youth for Christ in Rwanda, said. “I hope to learn more to shape my leadership career.”

Erica Asiimwe, Kurumbuka’s Executive Leaders Program Director, stated that “we are excited about the synergy between Kurumbuka and TWU. This partnership offers significant value to our students and provides them an opportunity to become better equipped as global leaders.”

The agreement between TWU and Kurumbuka was signed on October 22, 2023 in Kigali with 35 ALI students witnessing the event. Dr. Phil Laird, Vice Provost of TWU Global, and Dr. Imbenzi George, Director of International Engagement (Africa), were present to join with Richard Taylor and Kurumbuka co-founder Phocas Ngendahyao, in making it all official. The signing was followed by dancing, celebration, and a traditional East African meal.

Laird reflected on the importance of leadership in Africa by saying “The future of our societies rests on leadership. From the boardroom to the classroom, investing in the next generation of leaders is perhaps the greatest investment we can make. TWU is proud of our partnership with Kurumbuka Leadership Solutions to equip the next generation of leaders in Africa for lives of meaning and impact. Together we can

Intercede International: Ukraine – the war and refuge for ukrainians

Intercede International is a mission board whose main focus is assisting indigenous (national) missionaries working within their own or a neighbouring culture. Intercede raises awareness among Canadians of their work and provides financial relief and development aid and intercessory prayer support. Intercede also hosts national missionary leaders to speak in churches in Canada and at Intercede Mission Events.

As the world focuses on the war in Ukraine, God is at work powerfully through two Ukraine-based ministries partnered with Intercede International. One, Father’s House, with help from Christians in Canada, has helped 160 vulnerable children to escape safely from the Kiev region to Germany where they are being cared for. The other ministry, Good Samaritan Mission, again with much help from Christians giving to Intercede have been able to collect food and medical supplies for first aid and sending them to the hotspots of the war in Ukraine. Intercede’s GSM partner is also distributing Bibles to thousands of people requesting them throughout Ukraine and also to Ukainian refugees in Poland, Romania and other countries. These ministries need the continued prayers and support of Canadian Christians.

Established in Canada in 1953, Intercede International was raised up by God to establish, encourage and strengthen an indigenous New Testament witness for our Lord Jesus Christ among all nations, by providing intercessory spiritual and material aid to Christians who are impoverished, few or persecuted – and to encourage a Christian witness to the international community in Canada.

Intercede partners with 49 indigenous missions worldwide – impacting people groups in more than 50 nations.

truly change the world – one leader at a time.”

Kurumbuka’s mission of developing and empowering 10,000 African leaders to transform their communities by 2030 is a lofty goal. It requires training 1,000 leaders through ALI to reach an additional 10,000 leaders. The ALI model uniquely combines servant leadership principles with an asset-based approach to move leaders serving the marginalized from scarcity to abundance, dependency to agency, and isolation to community. It’s 260 alumni are already bringing hope in nine different countries as their initiatives fan hope into flame.

The Christ-centered approach of ALI and TWU, Canada’s largest Christian University, helps forge a natural bond in this partnership. Since 1962, TWU has been moving steadily into becoming a global Christian liberal arts community and this visionary partnership adds to its ongoing credibility.

At the close of the class sessions, the leaders celebrated Ethiopian student Sosena Shiferaw who is pregnant. “We are celebrating the birth of the next generation of African leaders,” someone shouts out. “Amen!” is the echo and the dance goes on.

Pakistan (good news)

The recent directive from the Lahore High Court to strictly enforce anti-child marriage laws has raised hope among Pakistan’s Christians of some protection against their underage girls being forced to convert to Islam and wed their kidnappers, sources said. It also ordered chairmen of union councils to promptly annul any underage marriages, with the court mandating strict legal actions against such unions.

“This order marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle against underage marriages in Pakistan, especially those belonging to Christian and Hindu communities,” Christian attorney Sumera Shafique said. “It not only strengthens the legal framework but also signals a broader shift towards more vigilant and proactive measures in protecting the rights and well-being of young girls across the province.”

Shafique has won freedom for several Christian girls forcibly converted to Islam and married to those who kidnapped them.

According to a U.N. report issued in 2020, Pakistan has the sixth highest number of girls married before the age of 18 in the world. Child marriage is prevalent in Pakistan due to deeply entrenched traditions and customs, poverty, lack of awareness and/or access to education and lack of security, among other reasons, the report noted.

Praise God for this good news. This is indeed an answer to the prayers of many.

Mozambique

Historically, Mozambique has been a country characterized by primarily peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims. The Constitution safeguards religious freedom and the right to worship according to one’s beliefs. As a secular nation, religious discrimination is prohibited.

Everything changed in 2017, when armed militants,

named IS-M, bearing the Islamic State flag, began to wreak havoc, predominately in the northern Mozambique province of Cab Delgado.

Depending on the source, an estimated 1,800 to 3,000 Christians have been murdered in northern Mozambique since October 2017 in ongoing anti-Christian violence. Additionally, almost a million people have been displaced due to the violent attacks. Christians, primarily farmers, have had villages burned and crops destroyed, endangering the food supply and thus creating an “acute hunger crisis.” IS-M militants have also disrupted natural gas supplies.

Together with Christians, prominent local Muslim leaders have condemned these attacks, forming a coalition to address the conflict and support those adversely affected.

Some reports indicate that 20 percent of Christian girls aged 13-17, in the northern region particularly, are vulnerable to being kidnapped and forced to marry a Muslim man.

On January 4, 2024, IS-M launched a campaign against Christians, “And Kill Them Wherever You Find Them.”

Between January 4 and February 12, 2024, a composite of multiple reports indicate that IS-M militants carried out attacks resulting in at least 22 murders (including one beheading), one abduction, 237 homes burned, five churches burned as well as a hospital, Christian schools, military installations, and other infrastructure buildings burned. These attacks are occurring with little deterrence and counterattacks, leaving Christians at the mercy of IS-M jihadists. This is truly frightening and warrants international condemnation and intervention.

We as the body of Christ must stand with and pray for our persecuted brothers and sister in Mozambique, many of whom have lost everything. One pastor whose family had been killed proclaimed: “They can burn our houses, they can burn our food – but they cannot burn Jesus out of me.”

Please Pray for our persecuted Christian brothers and

sisters in Mozambique.

Nicaragua

Three American missionaries serving with a U.S.-based nonprofit recently faced criminal charges in Nicaragua. The missionaries have been accused of money laundering and organized crime in connection to eight mass evangelistic gospel campaigns hosted in the country last year, reaching nearly one million people. Eleven local pastors also face charges for their participation in the events.

The Christian ministry known as Mountain Gateway, which operates as Puerta de la Montaña in Nicaragua, is focused on discipleship, church planting, humanitarian outreach, and sharing the gospel globally. For ten years, Mountain Gateway has served the people of Nicaragua, maintaining a close relationship with local officials and operating under the government’s oversight.

Unfortunately, this case is just an example of the many ways Christians face discriminatory treatment under the repressive regime of President Daniel Ortega. Since 2018, dozens of Catholic Bishops have been arrested, churches vandalized, and religious clergy have faced erroneous charges for criticizing the government’s poor religious freedom conditions and human rights violations.

Voice of the Martyrs - Olympic Faith – A Hero’s Journey

Have you ever noticed that in scenes where those on one side of a battle are trying to extract information or intimidate the opposition, devices of torture are often paraded in front of the captive? The deliberate display of what could be done to a body is often a more effective tool for achieving compliance than actually doing harm.

The threat of death, pain, and suffering is a powerful ploy used by the enemy to intimidate God’s children. He uses it to keep us from sharing the gospel. It also blinds us from seeing we are not defenseless. We are not vic-

tims. We have weapons and we have One who fights with us…His hand over ours.

For over 50 years The Voice of the Martyrs Canada has told stories of a victorious Church. This is the subject of our vomcanada.com/olympicfaith.htm women’s retreats - The Hero’s Journey. Dr. Foley, retreat speaker & co-founder of Voice of the Martyrs Korea, has pioneered various discipleship programs to North Koreans for more than 15 years. She will walk Canadian women through the process of the hero’s journey, in which we will learn

to see our own painful stories through the eyes of a victor, not a victim. This is not about positive thinking. It is about the redemptive power of the cross. The area of your greatest pain becomes the area of your greatest testimony and platform to minister from. A platform that would not exist without those difficult, painful climbs to the high place of His Presence.

“Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.”

The Worth More film project

I’m working on a short film with Sloan Media called Worth More, about the value of every human life. God has personally been teaching me that I’m valuable and loved by Him no matter what, and with over 60,000 deaths in Canada by euthanasia since its initial legalization in 2016, I know I’m not the only one who needs to hear this message. Canadians need to be reminded that they have worth regardless of their age, their mental or physical health, the way they’re being treated by the government, or any other factor, and we as the church need to remember the hope we have in Christ in the face of suffering and death.

Please pray for our film, attend one of our screening events, and/or give financially to help us crowdfund our film. All screenings are from 7 - 9 pm and free to all. Please register at www.worthmorefilm.ca

• Saturday, April 13 at Friendship Baptist Church in Coquitlam

• Friday, April 19 at Main Street Church in Chilliwack

• Saturday, April 20 at Southside Baptist Church in Port Coquitlam

What is your aging mother worth? What is your friend struggling with a mental illness worth? What are you worth? Loud voices in society convey that the basis of human worth is unstable, contingent on what a person can contribute to society. But in the Bible and in the United Nations’ Declaration of Universal

Human Rights, we learn that all human beings have inherent dignity.

Every human being from conception to natural death is worthy of respect and honour simply because they are human, and they exist. The Worth More film is being produced because we believe Medical Assistance in Dying is an attack on human dignity, and we believe in contrast that all human beings are worth fighting for and loving to their natural end. Please join us by praying for our film and giving financially. Please also attend one of our screenings to learn more about MAiD and ways to show people they matter just the way they are.

Ways to Pray:

others once it is released.

Pray for God to touch people’s hearts to give that this project will be fully funded.

Pray that many people will attend the screening events and God’s Spirit will work powerfully to increase compassion, hope, and courage to stand for life in a culture of death.

Pray the film and screening events will lead to an increased movement of prayers and Christ-like actions against MAiD (euthanasia) and for life. Please pray that people will sign up for the Guardian Angel program that will be promoted, continue to educate themselves on this topic, email their MPs, give to help those suffering, and share the Worth More film with

Northern Canada Evangelical Mission

Our missionaries are active across Canada in evangelism, discipling, and ministering to the needs of the whole person. We do these within the framework of the bigger picture – we believe that establishing local fellowship groups and churches is central to the Great Commission and the building of God’s Kingdom among Canada’s First Peoples.

There are still many Aboriginal communities without a healthy Bible-based church. Can you imagine anything more rewarding than seeing, firsthand, a church planted

where there previously wasn’t one?

Lighthouse Harbour Ministries – Freedom from Prison

When Aldrin learned that through Jesus he could be free from bondage to sin, he was very interested in knowing more. This young Filipino seafarer had told a Lighthouse chaplain who was visiting his ship about his sin problem and struggle to overcome it. The chaplain had responded by telling Aldrin that Jesus had the power to provide freedom for (spiritual) prisoners (e.g. Luke 4:18). Aldrin showed great desire to experience this, and

the chaplain then explained the need for him to open his heart to Jesus to receive Him as Lord. The young fellow reacted by praying to Jesus and appeared to be strongly encouraged, expressing his gratitude for the encounter.

Unsung Hero

Most Christians have heard music from either Rebecca St. James or for KING + COUNTRY over the past 30 years but many don’t know the story of their parents David and Helen Smallbone losing their business and home in Australia and moving to Nashville in 1991 with nothing more than their suitcases, six children (1 more on the way) and their love of music. Unsung Hero hits theatres across North America on April 26 and is the remarkable true story of David (played by for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) setting out to rebuild their lives in America. Helen’s faith stands against all

odds and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs. With their own dreams on hold, David and Helen begin to realize the musical giftedness in their children, first with Rebecca St. James and then for KING + COUNTRY who would become three of the most successful artists in Christian Music history. Although they have shared stories of their family’s journey from the stage, the heartache, struggles and ultimately the way God answered their prayers and provided for their family had me captivated while watching the pre-screening of the film.

Even if you don’t know their music this movie will have you emotionally invested from the opening scene as these parents struggle to provide for their family in those first few years in Tennessee with no job, furniture, medical insurance or even a vehicle. Joel’s portrayal of his father’s pain and pride comes across as if he is a seasoned actor even though this is only his second lead role in a feature film. The film was directed by Joel, and he also co-wrote the screenplay, while Luke Smallbone took the helm as Producer. I had the chance to interview Luke while on a promotional tour for the movie and asked him what led them

to embark on the biggest project of their lives, “After years of sharing parts of our story from stage many people asked when we would write a book about it. One day while talking to a film producer friend the idea soon became a reality. But two months before filming was set to begin the production company left to pursue another project. So we were not sure if the project would even go ahead but after we made just a few calls we were able to secure investors to fund the film.” I asked Luke if any moments in their family’s journey did not make the final cut, “No, we condensed all the major moments in our family’s life into the two-year feeling of the film. I believe in the power of family…I think family is more important today than ever, but I don’t think we value it as we should. There is a quote in the film from Mother Teresa that says that if you want to change the world go home and love your family and that at the end of the day that is core message of the film.”

Coinciding with the release date of the film, four-time GRAMMY® Award-winning duo will release The Inspired By

Looking your best on a budget

Ask any woman and she will tell you that Queen Esther’s year of beauty treatments would have cost a King’s Ransom. Like people in Esther’s day, men and women still spend a small fortune on beauty products and treatments today. While it’s true that beauty is only skin deep, studies have shown that if a person looks good, they feel better, leading to a more fulfilling life. But how can we look our best without breaking the bank?

Why not consider a visit to a school that trains estheticians and hair stylists? Many schools offer studentdelivered services at highly discounted prices. This is a win-win for both students and clients alike. Under the guidance of instructors students receive training in a real life setting and clients save money on various treatments. Janine Murphy has visited a local school for over 35 years and has enjoyed a myriad of services. “I’ve had my nails done, regular pedicures, my hair coloured and cut, and since I turned 60 I treat myself to a facial every month,” she says. “I couldn’t afford that at a regular salon,” she explains. “And I really like the idea of helping the students gain practical experience to prepare them for their new careers,” she says.

Because it is students performing the services, the prices are far lower than in a regular spa or salon and usually only cover the cost of the products used. “This is to thank the customer for allowing students to practice their trade on real people,” says Launie Morgan, one of the owners of Legend’s Academy in Langley. “Most of the services cover the cost only, we don’t make much from the services, and that is not our goal,” explains Morgan. “The prices are low because we are grateful for customers who come to us for services that allows a student to learn while they are in school,” she adds.

Morgan has 30 plus years in the Cosmetology training

industry and she feels that students working with the public is a great way to enhance their learning experience. “When a student is able to work on a wide variety of individuals, they experience the most real-life work environment,” she says. “For example, the students do skin analysis for facials on many different people. This offers them more experience than just working on other students in the school,” she explains.

There are more than 33 schools in the Lower Mainland and BC but in some cases it can be a case of buyer beware. In 2003 the industry was deregulated, and this has unfortunately led to some schools cutting corners, mostly in the training aspect. “Some schools do not go by what was the standard. Some have reduced their hair programs for example from 1,500 hours to 600 hours for the same cost of tuition,” says Morgan. “That is why it’s important to choose a school that offers quality services and is certified by the Private Institutions Branch of the Provincial Government (PTIB). If certified, the school offers high quality training for the students and professional services for their clients,” says Morgan.

Some people are worried that a student won’t do as good a job as someone who is fully trained and working in a regular salon. Murphy is quick to say that in her opinion this is not the case. “Students are always under the guidance of a qualified instructor and the school I visit maintains a high standard,” she explains. “I have never had a bad experience, ever,” she adds.

The clients aren’t the only ones who feel uneasy. A recent graduate, Sheena Rattan-Prakash admits that she was nervous but she knew she had the support of her instructors. “Legend’s is a great school; the instructors are phenomenal. Each instructor supported me and what I appreciated was the nurturing environment they created and the constant motivation they gave me,” she says. Rattan-Prakash has recently opened her own successful salon, Glow Girl Beauty Bar & Med Spa in Aldergrove and she attributes her success to the quality of training she received. “I am able to stand confidently and independently

Soundtrack album that features the previously released title song “Unsung Hero” alongside many 90’s songs that impacted their family. When I asked Luke what song and special guest they first reached out to for this project he quickly responded, “Place In This World” by Michael W Smith is a very special song and one of the motivations to include it was that it could be more applicable today than it was when it originally released. Michael wrote it after reading a letter from a fan who was struggling with their mental health, trying to find their place in the world. “I find that today we are dealing with those issues more than ever and that lyric has really stood the test of time and it was an honour to have him join us on this new recording.” Other

in my own beauty bar/med spa today,” she says with a smile.

While Rattan-Prakash’s experience was a good one, this isn’t always the case. Due to deregulation and some flyby-nighter’s it’s important for students and clients to do their homework. Morgan is a past member of the Beauty Council of British Columbia, and she offers this advice to students contemplating a career in Cosmetology. “Students should be very careful to ensure the school they are interested in attending is accredited by the Private Institutions Branch (PTIB),” she cautions. She offers the same advice to clients as well. “Ask questions to make sure that the school of your choice has the right accreditation and values,” she advises.

Beauty is only skin deep but if there is a school of Cosmetology or hairdressing in your community, consider a visit. You will receive professional services, save some money, and help a student learn a valuable trade. And that’s a beautiful thing.

Amy Grant. “To Hell With The Devil” featuring Lecrae & Stryper and “I Surrender All” ” featuring Hillary Scott & Michael W. Smith. Smallbone says, “What a field day we had with this album, we have more special guests than any album we’ve ever done, having had the opportunity to take these incredibly nostalgic 90’s songs and re-imagine them was an adventure.”

There are many reasons to make sure that you are set up. Have you ever needed to know your RRSP or TFSA limit? Have you needed a copy of your Notice of Assessment (NOA) for your bank or financial advisor? Have you ever wondered if you actually cashed in that last CRA cheque? These are all things that you can find on your CRA My Account.

When someone meets a potential new advisor there is usually quite a bit of data gathering that goes on. The advisor wants to know how much RRSP and TFSA room there is, details about past income, charitable donations, and a whole lot more. This can be another great use of the CRA My Account. By authorizing your advisor as a representative, you give them the ability to look up many of these items, and it can save you a great deal of time having to dig through paperwork. By authorizing us as a representative, we’ve saved our clients the bother of sending us a copy of their NOA or looking up the information we need from their own documents. Now we can simply look up a TFSA or RRSP limit directly, saving the client time and removing one point of potential error. If your current advisor isn’t doing this for you already, I would encourage you to ask them to start.

The CRA My Account isn’t a new thing. For some time now, the CRA has given individuals the ability to sign in and see the status of their returns, gather past tax information, current RRSP and TFSA limits, and many other useful things. In the past few years the CRA has relied on web services more and more and, as a result, they have made it a much more useful tool for taxpayers and their advisors.

But it’s not just beneficial for financial advisors. If you have a low income, you can see the schedule of your GST/HST credits. Parents can look up their Canada Child Benefit details. People with disabilities can find out what’s happening with their disability tax credit. If the CRA has asked for additional documentation, they have a portal where you can quickly and easily submit those documents.

In my opinion, pretty much everyone should set themselves up. If you don’t already have an account, here is what you need to do:

1. Gather up your last year’s tax return. If that one’s super recent, maybe grab the one from the year before, too –just in case you need it. You will need information from one of these on your first visit

only for verification purposes.

2. With the above at hand, go to www.canada.ca/myaccount, and click on “CRA My Account”.

3. Now you have a choice: use a bank sign in, set up a CRA user ID, or use your provincial ID to sign up. Pick whichever one is easiest for you and the one that you will remember for next time.

4. After making your choice, you will be walked through the setup process, asked a series of verification questions, and asked to set up two-factor authentication. Now you’re set.

Once you have access, you’ll be able to see your tax returns, NOAs and any reassessments, benefits, and tax refunds. You will be able to see your RRSP and TFSA limits and your required repayments for the first-time home buyer program. You’ll be able to see your correspondence with the CRA, and you can even request adjustments to your past returns. In short, almost everything that would have meant a call to the CRA in the past is accessible on this site.

In my opinion, one of the nicest features is the ability to give your accountant or financial advisor access to your information easily. You get to decide if you want to give them level 1 access (permission to view only) or level 2 access (permission to act on your behalf).

However, I do have one caveat about the information on this site: I’ve said this in past articles, don’t trust the reported TFSA limit until March or even April. The CRA should have a much bigger disclaimer on the page explaining that they don’t even update the TFSA contribution details for the past year until the end of February.

Other than this flaw (which I consider to be a significant

one) with the TFSA numbers, your CRA My Account is a useful site for obtaining information of all sorts from the CRA. Being able to sign in may also enable you to auto download information into your tax return program every year, saving you the time it takes to input all the T-slips. I know it can feel a bit daunting to set up, but it’s really not that difficult if you gather your tax returns first. And once it’s set up, it makes so many things much easier. I strongly encourage you to just push through the initial few hoops (they really aren’t that hard) and get yourself set up. It’s the wave of the future and you’ll be glad you did.

14 April 2024 inspiring faith for everyday life

While it was still dark

A couple of weeks ago, my laptop suddenly turned itself off and wouldn’t turn back on.

I’m not sure what happened since I had stepped away for a moment. But I had noticed the fan seemed to be running more than usual, and when I returned to my desk, I found my laptop had failed. It wasn’t just sleeping, since it wouldn’t wake up. It wasn’t out of power, since it was plugged in. I figured it must be overheated.

So, I unplugged it, detached my external drive, and let my laptop cool off – “at least 30 minutes,” said Google. But an hour later, the bottom of my laptop still felt hot. So, I waited. Four hours later, still hot, still waiting. I moved my laptop to a cooler part of the house. Six hours later, still warm, still waiting.

Finally, nine hours later, my laptop felt normal – but it still wouldn’t start. I turned it over and tried to reset the battery by inserting a paper clip into the pinhole on the bottom of the laptop. I’d had to do that once before – last year – but this time, my laptop still wouldn’t start. I tried again, still nothing. I started to wonder whether my laptop had been damaged beyond resting and beyond repair.

I let it sit overnight. Then the next morning, I held my breath and tried to start my laptop again. And voila! the backlit keyboard flashed to life, the screen came on, and all was well once more.

I restored my browser windows that had been so rudely cut off the day before, logged out of each one and closed each one properly. I recovered my most recent documents, and checked that all my other files were still listed neatly on my hard drive. Everything seemed to be just as it had been before the crash.

Somehow in the middle of the night, my laptop had been restored – without my worrying over it or working

on it, without doing more research online or trying to revive it with a paperclip, or even praying over it. From that experience, I learned about the value of waiting and about not letting my laptop get overheated – and yes, I now have a proper cooling pad for it. I was also reminded – at the risk of over-spiritualizing – that just as my laptop had somehow been revived in the middle of the night when I wasn’t looking, so too the resurrection life of Easter first appeared at night when no one was there to see it.

The gospel of John tells us that “early in the morning of the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been taken away” (20:1). She had started out while it was still dark, so by the time she arrived, the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. Jesus had already risen from the dead! Somehow while it was still dark and while there were no witnesses, God had raised Jesus to new life. That’s how God’s resurrection power works – while it’s still dark, in secret when no one’s looking, in ways that we don’t expect.

But Mary didn’t know that yet. In her tears and confusion, when she later saw Jesus in the garden, she assumed he was the gardener. Jesus didn’t rush to correct her. Instead, he gently asked her: “Why are you crying?”

(John 20:15). He began with Mary’s heart of loss and misery. He accepted her tears. He did not try to talk her out of crying. He did not say things are not as bad they seem. He didn’t even

Kaleo - How one year could change the rest of your life

Graduating from high school in 2024 or a recent graduate? Are you looking for a highly unique, proven program that has the potential to impact your life in the best possible way?

Since 2003 Camp Qwanoes and Briercrest College have partnered together to offer the Kaléo program, an eight-month foundational leadership college program that seeks to develop young Christian leaders. Students come from across Canada. The current group of students, about to graduate in April, includes the program’s 500th student!

In the Kaléo program, five components fuse together powerfully to create an ideal setting for significant growth and leadership development. Students experience caring community, fully accredited academics, front-line ministry, and the best of west coast adventure like multi-day sailing, surfing, and skiing or snowboarding excursions. Leadership training is woven into all aspects of the program.

was possible. Through everything they gain a strong foundation for more education, work, ministry, and whatever is next in their lives.

In the words of current students:

“Coming to Kaléo was the best decision I ever made.”

“Nothing could have prepared me for how transformational this year would be.”

“The adventures have been absolutely unreal. Whether climbing a mountain or living on a tall ship, the out-trips have been experiences of bonding, connecting to God’s creation, and fun.”

On an ongoing basis, students put into practice what they are learning through serving in a dynamic camp ministry setting, church ministry, outreach events, and a missions trip.

Sid Koop, a Kaléo program professor and Executive Director of Youth Worker Community, says, “The holistic element of the learning is fantastic.” Students who come to the Kaléo program grow more than they thought

“I’ve loved all the classes and professors… and gained a deeper understanding of the Bible, and the character of God.”

“This year’s been full of incredible growth, opportunity, and memories that will last a lifetime.”

“This program has been such a blast… I honestly had no idea what I was signing up for in the best way possible.”

rush to tell her the good news of his resurrection.

Instead, Jesus began by acknowledging Mary’s despair, and only then revealed who he was by calling her by name. Only then did she recognize him and the power of his resurrection. Somehow while she was still in the depths of her grief, Jesus called out to her and brought her new life. That’s how God’s resurrection power works! While it’s still dark, when we’re not able to see clearly, in ways that we don’t expect.

Like Mary, some of us may be grieving or confused or unable to recognize Jesus. All of us have a long way to go in understanding death and resurrection, life and faith.

But be assured – God’s resurrection power is at work –while it’s still dark, in the midst of whatever grief or confusion or questions or trials we face. The risen Christ meets us wherever we are, calls us by name, and brings new life.

Non-fiction:

Strange Religion

The first Christians were weird. Just how weird is often lost on today’s believers. Within Roman society, the earliest Christians stood out for the oddness of their beliefs and practices. They believed unusual things, worshiped God in strange ways, and lived a unique lifestyle. They practiced a whole new way of thinking about and doing religion that would have been seen as bizarre and dangerous when compared to Roman religion and most other religions of the ancient world.

and the world. These ways of describing ourselves matter because they shape the ways we live.

You Are a Tree examines how the metaphorical descriptions we use in everyday life shape the way we think, pray, and live. This book invites you to pay attention to your experiences, and to the words you use to describe them. That attention reveals a richly layered and meaningful world, a refreshing perspective that nurtures wonder, gratitude, and hope.

Healthy Conflict, Peaceful Life

Award-winning author, blogger, speaker, and New Testament teacher Nijay Gupta traces the emerging Christian faith in its Roman context. Christianity would have been seen as radical in the Roman world, but some found this new religion attractive and compelling. The first Christians dared to be different, pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable, transformed how people thought about religion, and started a movement that grew like wildfire.

Crisis of Confidence

Crossway

Historic statements of faith – such as the Heidelberg Catechism, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Westminster Confession of Faith – have helped the Christian church articulate and adhere to God’s truth for centuries. However, many modern evangelicals reject these historic documents and the practices of catechesis, proclaiming their commitment to “no creed but the Bible.” And yet, in today’s rapidly changing culture, ancient liturgical tradition is not only biblical – it’s essential.

In Crisis of Confidence, Carl Trueman analyzes how creeds and confessions can help the Christian church navigate modern concerns, particularly around the fraught issue of identity. He contends that statements of faith promote humility, moral structure, and a godly view of personhood, helping believers maintain a strong foundation amid a culture in crisis.

Even if He Doesn’t

How can I approach God if I’m struggling to believe in His goodness?

So much of our belief can be formulaic. We often think that if we do A, B, and C, then God will do X, Y, and Z. We check things off the “Good Christian Checklist,” trusting we’ll be okay, and our trials will be minimal. But when our experiences inevitably deviate from that belief, our trust in God often crumbles. After a series of life-altering trials – including a devastating diagnosis – uncovering faith in the cracks of pain is something Kristen LaValley knows well.

Author, speaker, and pastor’s wife Donna Jones gives women a practical, biblical blueprint for making regretfree choices in the middle of real-life conflict so they can exchange relational turmoil for personal and relational peace.

We’ve all had moments where we look back on a conflict, shake our heads, and think, why did I handle it that way?

With three decades of ministry experience, Donna Jones has had a front-row seat to – and been in the middle of –all kinds of conflict and she understands the regret, guilt, heartache, and hurt conflict can produce. But she also knows it’s possible for God to use those chaotic, painful moments and turn them into opportunities for better connection with those around us.

The Hidden Peace

The peace we long for begins with coming to the end of ourselves.

Embers in the London Sky

As the German army invades the Netherlands in 1940, Aleida van der Zee Martens escapes to London to wait out the occupation. Separated from her three-year-old son, Theo, in the process, the young widow desperately searches for her little boy even as she works for an agency responsible for evacuating children to the countryside.

When German bombs set London ablaze, BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood reports on the Blitz. Amid the bombs a series of murders flame up amid the ashes. The deaths hit close to home for Hugh, and Aleida needs his help to locate her missing son. As they work together, they grow closer and closer, both to each other and the answers they seek. But with bombs falling and continued killings, they may be running out of time.

Up From the Dust

There are inescapable aspects of life we are all marked by. We have less control than we want, more anxiety than we’re comfortable with and just enough insecurity to continually remind us of our shortcomings. To experience these things is to be human. We aren’t superheroes and invincibility isn’t an option, but humility is. Whether we’ve incorrectly defined it or underestimated its relevance to our daily life, humility is the missing piece for the security, strength and confidence we all want. It’s time to stop trying so hard to avoid our limitations or overcompensate for them. God has better for us and it begins with bowing low in humility.

Fiction:

Lady’s Guide to Marvels and Misadventure

Those in the midst of heartache will find strength and renewal as Kristen approaches the complexity of suffering with compassion, guiding us to endure while not forsaking the joy, hope, and peace of those marked by Jesus.

You are the Tree

“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.”

- Psalm 1:3

Sometimes we describe ourselves as trees. When we’re thriving, we speak of being rooted and fruitful, in a good season. When we struggle, we might describe ourselves as withering, cut off from friendship

London, England, 1860. When Clara’s ex-fiancé begins to spread rumours that her family suffers from hereditary insanity, it’s all she can do to protect them from his desperate schemes, society’s prejudice, and a lifetime in an asylum. Then Clara’s Grandfather Drosselmeyer brings on an apprentice with a mechanical leg, and all pretense of normalcy takes wing.

Theodore Kingsley, a shame-chased vagabond haunted by the war, wants a fresh start far from Kingsley Court and the disappointed father who declared him dead. Upon returning to England, Theodore meets clockmaker Drosselmeyer, who hires him as an apprentice, much to Clara’s dismay. When Drosselmeyer spontaneously disappears in his secret flying owl machine, he leaves behind a note for Clara, beseeching her to make her dreams of adventure a reality by joining him on a merry scavenger hunt across Europe. Together, Clara and Theodore set off to follow Drosselmeyer’s trail of clues, but they will have to stay one step ahead of a villain who wants the flying machine for himself – at any cost.

Martha of Bethany is no stranger to adversity. After her mother’s untimely death, Martha shoulders the responsibility of raising her siblings – quiet and studious Lazarus, and wild and rambunctious Mary. She finds solace in friendship and the beginnings of first love, but just as Martha begins to imagine a new future, hardship strikes again and her dreams crumble into dust.

Ten years later, Martha’s friend pleads for the new teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, to come and heal her husband. When Martha discovers that the carpenter-rabbi is connected to her past, she’s not sure she can trust him with her future. But as he continues to perform miracles, the invitation to believe becomes harder to resist, renewing Martha’s hardened heart, even as she faces an unknown future.

The Ark and the Dove

Zara and Noah have walked together with the Creator for their entire lives, and they have done their best in an increasingly wicked and defiant world to raise their three sons to follow in their footsteps. It has been a challenge – and it’s about to get much, much harder.

When the Creator tells her husband to build an ark to escape the coming wrath against the sins of humankind, Zara steps out with him in faith. But the derision and sabotage directed their way from both friends and extended family are difficult to bear, as is knowing that everyone she interacts with beyond her husband, her sons, and their wives is doomed to destruction. And when the ark is finally finished and the animals have been shut up inside, Zara and her family embark on an adventure that will test their patience and their faith as they await deliverance and dry ground.
