Sharing the Journey, Hand in Hand

HONORING CANTOR

29 YEARS OF SACRED SERVICE

I remember the first time I heard Lori Brock sing. I was a new assistant rabbi and Temple Beth El needed additional cantorial help to serve our growing congregation. We had a few other auditions which left me underwhelmed, and then we sat down in the sanctuary for Lori’s presentation. Wow!

I remember it wasn’t just the quality of her voice. It was the energy and the spirit behind it. And that same spirit has only grown larger in the 29 years since that day.

In those early years, Lori and I would spend hours learning together, studying the liturgy and the deeper spiritual resonances behind our prayers. Like she was then, Lori is constantly thirsty for wisdom and understanding, always curious and looking to learn, relentlessly pursuing her intellectual and spiritual growth.

In 2006, following the tragic death of Cantor Stephen Dubov just a few weeks into his tenure, Lori again stepped up to lead our congregation. And as our senior cantor, Lori has led with passion, excitement, energy, and a commitment to excellence in her every endeavor. It was not long after she began that Lori knew she wanted to study for her formal cantorial investiture. But as a mother of young children, that seemed an impossibility. So when the Hebrew Union College offered a distance-learning program for cantorial education, Lori jumped at it.

spiritual growth. It is not simply to lead from the bima, but to share the journey hand-in-hand with the communities we share.”

In so many ways, that has been Lori’s mission. She is happiest when the congregation feels inspired to sing with her, when they open not just their mouths, but their souls. She carefully crafts each worship service, looking to inspire those who join us in worship to experience transcendence, awe, and joy – for the music to uplift and elevate the spirit, and to inspire meditative personal introspection and reflection.

But more than what Lori offers from the bima is what Lori offers from her heart. Lori loves this congregation with every fiber of her being. There isn’t a single member of the community that she does not hold in her heart. When members of Temple Beth El are battling illness or moving through loss and grief, Lori is constantly there by their side, regularly checking in to let them know they are supported, appreciated, and loved.

“It is our responsibility to inspire and educate the members of our congregations to make their own personal investments in our communities and to take ownership for their spiritual growth. It is not simply to lead from the bima, but to share the journey hand-in-hand with the communities we share.”

In her application, Lori wrote the following: “Today’s Cantor must be a conduit through which Jewish seekers connect to their Jewish heritage and to God. We must use music as just one of our tools to challenge our congregants’ minds and souls. We cannot allow our congregants to sit back and let us pray for them. It is our responsibility to inspire and educate the members of our congregations to make their own personal investments in our communities and to take ownership for their

Lori weaves her creativity into almost everything she does – from the Passover Seders we have led together infused with Broadway and Billy Joel, to the trips she has led, to the programs she has authored. Her cultivation of the Friends of Music and Arts has enriched our congregation with phenomenal programs and enhanced the quality of our Shabbat and holiday services.

Lori has made an indelible imprint on Temple Beth El. She has not only enriched the most important moments of our lives – on the bima at B’nai Mitzvah, beneath the Chuppah, by the graveside, in a house of mourning – but she has made our congregation rich with the spirit of love and life she brings to everything she is and does.

Please join me as we honor her 29 years of service at the Bash in her honor April 11, 2026, and thank her for her remarkable service to our congregation and the Jewish people.

Legacy Is What Moves Forward

I have always had a hard time with the word legacy. It feels too big: some grandiose thing that lasts forever, attached to a name like Mozart or Einstein. In the grand scheme of things, most people will be known only for a moment in time. Even the famous people of our own day will be remembered for only a few years, and only by those paying attention. You and I will possibly be remembered by our great-grandchildren, at best. So, what’s the point?

The truth is, legacy matters deeply – just not in the way we usually talk about it.

Legacy isn’t about being remembered. Legacy is the effect you leave behind in people: the way you made them feel, the confidence you helped them find, the values you showed truly matter. It lives in the small actions that change someone’s day or shift someone’s thinking. It’s the energy you bring into the world and the way you choose to show up.

Legacy isn’t about forever. It’s about creating movement forward.

As President of Temple Beth El, I think of my role as being like a bumblebee – quietly pollinating ideas, smoothing situations, connecting people, helping things grow. Most of what I do is small, but I’ve learned that those small acts create meaningful ripples.

As we look ahead to Cantor Lori Brock transitioning to Emerita status in June 2026, the real meaning of legacy shines through. Lori’s legacy is not just her voice or her presence on the bima; it lives in the countless moments in which

this past November. Senior Cantorial Associate Michelle Auslander Cohen and I brought 20 women to witness the beauty, the pain, and the resilience of Israel today. It was a packed eightday trip, but the moment that stands out most was our visit to the NOVA festival site. Now a memorial, it is lined with makeshift placards honoring hundreds of young adults whose lives were stolen – many in their early twenties. We will never know their names by heart, but their legacies live on. They sought joy and inclusivity. They sought to live in love.

It is said that every Israeli citizen personally knows someone who has died since October 7. Each one of those individuals lives on through the strength of Israel, and through us as witnesses carrying their stories forward. Their legacies did not end. Their energy moves forward in ways they could never have predicted.

That is the truth I want every member of our congregation to understand: you are creating a legacy every single day. Not through grand gestures, but through the way you show up— to this community, to your family, to your friendships, and to yourself. Every time you volunteer, welcome someone new, support a program, offer a kindness, ask a question, challenge an assumption, comfort someone, or simply show up, you are shaping what Temple Beth El becomes. You may never know the full effect of your actions – most people don’t – but the impact is real. That is why Greg and I made a commitment to our BE The Future campaign, so that part of our legacy will be felt in our congregation for years to come.

“Legacy isn’t about being remembered. Legacy is the effect you leave behind in people.”

she has supported, comforted, celebrated, and uplifted this community. Her legacy is embodied in people, in memories, in spiritual connections that will continue long after her daily work here ends. Her legacy moves forward in us.

This idea of legacy came into sharper focus during an incredibly meaningful trip to Israel with Temple Beth El and Momentum Unlimited

Here at Temple Beth El, every one of us has the power to pollinate goodness, connection, justice, and hope. We each contribute to the future of this community in ways that are meaningful, even when they are quiet.

My hope is that this issue of the Chronicle inspires you not only to reflect on Lori’s beautiful legacy, but also to see the one you are creating – right now – through the small choices that add up to something lasting.

Beth El Mausoleum Expansion CONSTRUCTION

After four years of planning, design, and permitting, the long-awaited expansion of the Beth El Mausoleum is officially underway. The project broke ground in February 2025, launching a carefully coordinated construction effort.

Early work has focused on preparing the site, including excavation, tree removal and relocation, and surveying to establish the building’s footprint. Crews also completed digging for the elevator shaft and installing the sewer line. With utilities in place, the foundation was poured, followed by the steel and wood framing that will support the crypts, office, bathroom, stairways, and hallways.

Concrete work for the crypt levels has progressed efficiently, with teams repeatedly dismantling and rebuilding framework for each new level. All six levels of the first floor were successfully poured by Thanksgiving. Soon after, the secondfloor slab was framed and poured, and by the end of January, all six levels of the second floor were completed as well. Meanwhile, significant progress has been made on the artistic and finishing elements of the project. Marble and granite for crypt and niche fronts—including premium gated

alcoves, sarcophagi, and two private rooms—have been carefully selected and ordered. Our Art Task Force continues to meet biweekly with the chosen artist and studio to design stained-glass windows, mosaics, a prayer wall, and additional artwork. Nearly half of the stained-glass windows have been approved and will enter production soon.

Thanks to the skill and dedication of our construction team, the project remains on schedule. Barring any unforeseen delays, we look forward to opening the doors to this lovely new building in April 2027, continuing our long-standing commitment to creating a sacred and enduring space for our community.

Marilyn and Jay Weinberg Rule of Law Award Recipient

JUDGE BRUCE REINHART

United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Florida Civility Award Recipient

The legacy of the Nuremberg Trials, and the work of Bryan Stevenson, inspire us to believe we can change the world. By pushing ourselves to get closer to those who are suffering, by changing our narratives so we don’t get comfortable with injustice, by sustaining hope, and by embracing our obligation to do uncomfortable and inconvenient things, we can make our world a more just and holy place.

BRYAN STEVENSON is the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative. Under his leadership, EJI has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults.

He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Just Mercy, adapted as a major motion picture and winner of the American Bar Association’s 2020 Silver Gavel Award and four NAACP Image Awards. Mr. Stevenson is also the subject of the Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary True Justice and is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Government.

Rooted in Reform, INVESTED IN THE FUTURE

For Sandy and Tadd Schwab, Temple Beth El is more than a synagogue—it is a spiritual home. With decades of leadership and involvement in Reform Jewish life around the world, they have seen firsthand what makes a congregation thrive. In this reflection, they share how community, connection, and a deep belief in the power of congregational life led them to Temple Beth El—and why they proudly support the BE The Future campaign.

Sandy and I are relatively new members of Temple Beth El—we joined during the Covid period—but we are not new to Reform Judaism. We have been active members of Reform congregations throughout our 49 years of marriage, and we have each had the honor of serving as temple presidents along the way. Reform synagogue life has been central to our Jewish journey.

In recent years, following my service on the board of the Union for Reform Judaism, we became deeply involved in the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ), the global Reform movement. Wherever we travel, we make a point of visiting local congregations. Through the WUPJ Torah Exchange Program, our family has helped provide Torah scrolls to four new and growing congregations—in Vilnius, Porto, Kehilat Ofir near Tel Aviv, and this coming March, to a Russian-speaking Reform congregation outside Tel Aviv. These Torahs—restored Czech Holocaust scrolls—represent both survival and renewal.

Sandy and I first connected with Rabbi Levin on a trip to Israel. Since joining Beth El, we have traveled together on the Civil Rights trip with Rabbi Greg, an Israel trip with Rabbi Dan and the Portugal trip. All of these experiences have been especially meaningful because of the wonderful friendships we have formed along the way.

Closer to home, we also support our children’s congregations

Temple Judea in Tarzana, California, and Barnert Temple in New Jersey—as well as B’er Chayim Temple in Cumberland, Maryland, where I grew up. Across continents and generations, our belief is the same: a congregation matters. Jewish life is strongest when it is rooted in community.

That belief is why the BE The Future campaign resonates so deeply with us. A synagogue is a spiritual home where our rabbis walk with us through joy, loss, reflection, and celebration. Our services are richer because they take place in a community we know and care about. High Holy Days have far greater meaning when you have a personal place to return to—a place where you belong.

No one can predict exactly what synagogues will look like in the future. But by supporting Temple Beth El today, we can be confident that it will be here—strong, vibrant, and continually finding new ways to nurture Jewish life. Sandy and I want Temple Beth El to remain the spiritual home we found during Covid and to continue serving future generations with the same warmth, purpose, and strength.

That is why we support the BE The Future campaign.

If Temple Beth El is a Meaningful Part of Your Life...

Meaning

A VOICE OF A LIFE OF CANTOR LORI’S JOURNEY

A reflection on faith, resilience, and the Jewish belief that every day is a gift—and every life a sacred calling.

I joined Temple Beth El in 1991, when I married my late husband. We were blessed with two children and became part of the congregation. We were both actors, so we often worked Friday nights, but Temple Beth El was our spiritual home—a place of grounding, connection, and belonging.

On May 1, 1996, everything changed.

We were driving on I-95 on our way to an audition when someone cut in front of us. In a moment, there was a terrible accident, and my husband was killed. I remember standing on the highway—it was a beautiful, clear day—and looking up at the sky and saying, “God, I have never contemplated this happening in my life. I need You to show me what to do.” It was my unspoken hineni—“here I am”—a moment of answering a call I did not yet understand.

In that moment, I realized I was a woman of faith. I felt spared. My children weren’t in the car. I was covered in glass and somehow had no cuts. Almost immediately, Rabbi Singer and Cantor Ann Turnoff, came to my side. I was embraced by Temple Beth El in ways I will

EDITOR’S NOTE: As we celebrate Cantor Lori this season and her transition into the role of Cantor Emerita, I had the privilege of sitting down with her to reflect on what it truly means to live a life of meaning. As we spoke, I was struck by how many newer members of our community may not know her journey—and how powerfully her story speaks to faith, resilience, and the sacred impact of a life devoted to others. —Natalie Cohen

never forget, held by a community that surrounded me with compassion when I needed it most.

In the weeks that followed, Cantor Turnoff said to me, “I think you could do this.” We knew each other from theater, and a nearby synagogue needed a soloist to lead a few bar mitzvah services. I said, “How am I going to do this? I don’t read Hebrew.” She said, “You’ll do it. You read music.”

I was more nervous than the bar mitzvah student. But I loved it. I knew immediately that this was my calling.

The temple supplied me with cassette tapes and a Hebrew workbook, and when I couldn’t sleep at night, I taught myself how to read Hebrew—line by line, sound by sound. Six weeks later, I returned and said, “Okay, I can read Hebrew—now what?” Learning to chant Torah and prayers followed, and soon an opportunity arose. I auditioned for the assistant role, and that is when my journey toward the cantorate truly began, guided by cantors and rabbis who patiently taught, coached, and believed in me.

I made many mistakes along the way, but this congregation embraced me with love and understanding. I think they saw not perfection, but passion—and a deep love for this sacred calling.

For nine years, I served as assistant, learning prayer by prayer, moment by moment. Every Monday, I studied with Rabbi Dan Levin, learning the structure of services and how to accompany people through life’s sacred passages. When Cantor Turnoff left the temple, I filled in for a year until we hired Cantor Stephen Dubov. Within hours of first working together, he turned to me and said, “You need to become a cantor—we’re going to

make you a cantor.” Sadly, he passed just five weeks later, and once again I stepped forward—another divine calling.

Eventually, I knew I needed to study formally—not just for myself, but for the congregation. I wanted to feel authentic.

I felt the community deserved a cantorial leader grounded in learning and tradition. I enrolled in Hebrew Union College’s distance learning program, studied for four years, and spent seven weeks in Israel studying at the college there—the same place where I had once celebrated my adult bat mitzvah while leading a temple trip with Rabbi Dan. That experience deepened my love of Israel, our people, and lifelong learning. It also strengthened my passion for teaching, especially adults, because I know how courageous it is to begin learning later in life.

I love walking with people—watching minds and souls grow, holding hands through the highest moments of life—b’nai mitzvah, weddings—and the

that a life of meaning is built prayer by prayer, act by act, day by day.

This community also gave me permission to dream big—creating teen song leaders, bringing worship beyond our walls, and building a cultural arts program that brings Judaism alive through music, art, film, and theater. Everything I learned—through study, through loss, through joy—was passed on here, in voices raised in song and moments of holiness shared together.

As I step into the role of Cantor Emerita, I feel peace. I feel confident that the new cantorial team, led by Michelle Auslander Cohen, will continue nurturing this community with heart and intention. I look forward to sitting among the congregation, continuing pastoral care, teaching when called, and being inspired alongside one another. It feels a bit like becoming a grandmother—you love deeply, trust the next generation, and take pride in watching what you helped build continue to grow.

And I love walking with people—watching minds and souls grow. Holding hands through the highest moments—b’nai mitzvah, weddings— and the lowest moments, funerals and illness.

It’s the ultimate sacred privilege.

lowest moments of illness and loss. It is the ultimate sacred privilege.

I have been guided by extraordinary rabbis and staff—Rabbi Dan Levin, Michelle Auslander Cohen, Rabbi Greg Weisman, and our newest rabbis, Laila Haas and Ashira Boxman—colleagues and friends who allowed me to dream out loud and grow into this role. I am equally grateful to our congregants, especially the older women whose wisdom and quiet strength taught me

If there is a legacy I hope to leave, it is this: that Judaism is something we live, not just something we inherit; that learning is a lifelong act of faith; and that even from moments of deep brokenness, purpose can emerge. Every day is a gift. Every day is an opportunity—to help someone else, to help yourself, and to listen for the Holy One. Hayom im b’kolo tishma’u— today, if we listen. Life is not ordinary. Life is holy.

Beth El (Zoom)

Session 1 – April 7

From 7th Grade to Auschwitz, A Journey from Denial to Bearing Witness In 7th grade, David Shukiar received a flier claiming the Holocaust was a hoax. That moment began a long search for truth that ultimately led him to AuschwitzBirkenau, Majdanek and Terezin. Through photos and personal reflection, this presentation follows his path from encountering denial to walking the death camps themselves, retracing the final steps of Sophia and Hermi van Hasselt, his daughter’s Holocaust “twins.”

This class explores how misinformation takes hold, how truth confronts us, and why remembering remains essential.

Session 2 – April 14

Whispers from Terezin, the Children and the Words they Left Behind

Explore the haunting poetry of the film Through Children’s Eyes in this textbased class that uncovers the deeper meanings woven into the words of the children of Terezin. Together, we’ll experience their poetry and examine how these texts, through video musical examples, inspired and shaped the music composed for the film, revealing the powerful dialogue between their voices and today’s artistic expression.

About David Shukiar

The music of David Shukiar has been heard in synagogues, concert halls (including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York) and theatres all over North America and in Israel. For the past 17 years David has served in the cantorial office at Temple Adat Elohim in Thousand Oaks, CA. He has built a unique and successful music program spanning many generations. He currently serves as president of the Guild of Temple Musicians.

What Does it Mean to be Human?

Thursday, February 12

7:00 pm

Schaefer Family Campus Register at tbeboca.org/human

What does it mean to be human? Are we good? Are we free? Are we more than dust? Religious convictions about the fundamental nature of human beings significantly influence public policy related to criminal justice, abortion, gender, and more. They are frequently invoked in America’s contemporary “culture wars.” By broadening our collective understanding of what it means to be human, we resist the establishment of one particular Christian perspective as determinative for the entire body politic.

Shabbat Evening Services: Dangerous Religious Ideas

Friday, February 13

7:30pm

Schaefer Family Campus and Virtual Beth El

Our Wisdom & Wonder guest Rabbi Rachel Mikva will join us for Shabbat Evening Services.

All religious ideas are dangerous—not only those we might consider extremist, but even those that stand at the heart of faith, and your own. Because most religious traditions have always understood this peril, they have transmitted tools of selfcritique. Putting Jewish thought and practice in conversation with Christianity and Islam, we explore how the potential for blessing in religion is bound up with its potential for harm, and the necessity of self-critical faith.

Torah Study

Bagel nosh to follow

Schaefer Family Campus and Virtual Beth El (Zoom)

The CCAR is developing a new Torah commentary, and Rabbi Mikva was asked to curate material (historical and modern, traditional and radical) for Parashat Noach. She will teach her selected portion and you will be among the first to learn with the editor and be part of the conversation that shapes this important project!

About Rabbi Rachel Mikva

Rabbi Rachel Mikva, Herman E. Schaalman Professor of Jewish Studies and Senior Faculty Fellow at the Chicago Theological Seminary, served as a congregational rabbi for thirteen years before returning to academia. Her research and teaching focus on interpretation of the Hebrew Bible in various times and places, exploring how the ideas both shape and reflect the societies in which they unfold. The most profound truths are not simple ones, and they often live in dialectical tension with other truths. Pursuit of justice is essential, but the equally compelling call to mercy sometimes (gently) pushes justice aside. Freedom is a God-given right, but freedom without commitment and purpose leaves us rootless. Peace is our perpetual desire, even as we sometimes decide we must fight. We also live with the breathtaking and terrifying knowledge that religious passion is a catalyst for great good, but all too often is wielded as a weapon. She holds an AB from Stanford University, Rabbinic Ordination, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and a PhD from Jewish Theological Seminary.

BEIT MIDRASH | HOUSE OF LEARNING RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

Hebrew in the Religious School

At Temple Beth El, we know that Hebrew learning is an essential part of our children’s Jewish education. While it may not look the same as many of us remember, we are proud of our strong, intentional, and student-centered program.

In recent years, our clergy and education team carefully evaluated our Hebrew benchmarks, student needs, and parent feedback. We found that traditional methods—especially early letter memorization and passive prayer learning—were not leading to long-term retention or confidence. After extensive research, we adopted the nationally recognized Onward Hebrew program, an approach aligned with how children learn language best.

What does this mean for our students? It means they are:

• Hearing and using Hebrew weekly at Religious School for at least 45 dedicated minutes

• Building natural understanding and confidence

• Learning to read and sound out Hebrew at developmentally appropriate ages

• Receiving individualized support leading up to Bar/Bat Mitzvah, centered on how each student learns best—not a rigid timeline

Most importantly, our Hebrew expectations and benchmarks have not changed. In fact, we are seeing outstanding results, with many students surpassing our goals and showing greater enthusiasm for Hebrew than ever before. We are also better able to create meaningful rituals for students who may not follow a traditional Bar/Bat Mitzvah path, ensuring their connection to Judaism—and our community—remains positive and affirming.

Our team is committed to meeting each student where they are and supporting their growth with confidence and joy. If you ever have questions about how Hebrew unfolds at Temple Beth El, our doors are always open. Together, we are building a meaningful and lasting connection to Hebrew for every student.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

Mini Circles

One of the greatest joys of Religious School is watching our students discover what lights them up - what makes them smile, lean in, and feel truly connected. That spirit is at the heart of everything we do, including Mini Circles.

Mini Circles are short-term, interest-based groups. They allow students to try something new, build skills, and form friendships outside of their regular Religious School classes.

Some Mini Circles, such as Arts and Crafts or Backyard Games, are easy to join and do not require a minimum number of sessions. Others build upon skills taught in each class, involve a steeper learning curve, or work toward a larger final project. These Mini Circles require a minimum commitment of three to

four sessions so students can fully engage and feel successful. Mini Circles help students feel at home in our Religious School community. Whether baking unique kinds of challah in the Shabbat Mini Circle, getting active in Backyard Games or Israeli Dance, expressing creativity through art or photography, or exploring innovation through 3-D printing and laser cutting, each option invites students to explore, create, and connect.

Because students from different grades participate together, Mini Circles naturally encourage new friendships and strengthen our sense of belonging. By giving students choice and space to grow, Mini Circles nurture confidence, curiosity, and community.

At their core, Mini Circles are about choice, creativity, and connection. Students are empowered to follow their interests while being supported by caring teachers and surrounded by friends. My hope is that every child finds a Mini Circle that excites them and leaves each session feeling more confident, more connected, and more at home in our Religious School family.

Look out for upcoming Tribal Gatherings with your friends, featuring backyard fun, entertainment and hands-on experiences for all of our grade levels. And keep an eye on the Religious School Padlet and weekly emails for the latest!

Teen Trip To Israel

TEN INCREDIBLE TEENS FROM TEMPLE BETH EL OF BOCA RATON JUST RETURNED FROM AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY THROUGH ISRAEL.

From hiking ancient landscapes to engaging with Israel’s modern story, we experienced it all. We explored a biblical nature preserve, traced Israel’s founding, and saw today’s reality reflected in powerful post–October 7 graffiti art.

In Tzfat, we felt the city’s spiritual creativity, then connected deeply with our partnership friends in Zichron Yaakov. We learned about kibbutz life, welcomed Shabbat in Modi’in, and stood in awe at the Western Wall at night.

Adventure and reflection went hand in hand — climbing Masada at sunrise, floating in the Dead Sea, riding camels, and wandering Jerusalem’s Old City. Moments of deep meaning followed as we met an October 7 survivor, honored the victims of Nova, and visited Yad Vashem and Israel’s national hall for fallen soldiers. We return home with stronger Jewish pride, deeper friendships, and hearts full of connection and hope.

Quiet Giving, Lasting Impact

FINDING PURPOSE THROUGH THE GIVING TREE OF TEMPLE BETH EL

It is deeply inspiring to see how volunteering for “Quiet Giving,” a special division of The Giving Tree of Temple Beth El, leads participants to live lives filled with purpose. Quiet Giving provides crucial essentials for daily living to those who need it most, and giving the gift of dignity to someone who is struggling— quietly, humbly, and without fanfare— brings meaning not only to those who receive, but to those who give.

This powerful act of Tikkun Olam is best illustrated through the experiences of two long-time Giving Tree volunteers, Barbara Urban and Suzanne Katz. United by a shared commitment to helping others, both women also find deep personal fulfillment through their work.

“The work is meaningful because we are making a difference for people in our community who are struggling to provide basic necessities for their families,” says Suzanne. “They struggle to put food on the table, find clothing, and provide what their children need to be successful in school. It is quite fulfilling to imagine a child we’ve helped walking into school wearing a brand-new outfit.”

Barbara shares her own journey with the Giving Tree. “I began volunteering with The Giving Tree of Temple Beth

El twenty years ago. About three years ago, I was asked to co-chair the upgraded Quiet Giving Clothing Closet program.”

She explains that Palm Beach County social service agencies rely on Giving Tree Quiet Giving to support their clients in need. “Primarily, we provide seven days of new clothing, along with shoes, socks, and underwear, for each child. For families of all ages, Quiet Giving also supplies car seats, strollers, housewares, laptop computers, and much more. All requests come through the Giving Tree website and are carefully reviewed. Once accepted, volunteers do the shopping, organizing, packing, communication, and distribution.”

Both Barbara and Suzanne describe

working closely with caseworkers to meet each client’s specific needs. Volunteers gather items from the Giving Tree storage facility or shop when something is not available. Once a request is fulfilled, the caseworker is contacted to arrange pickup.

“There are times when Quiet Giving receives one or two requests per week, and other weeks we may receive ten or fifteen,” Suzanne notes. “The work and schedule are very unpredictable.”

For Barbara, the most rewarding moments come at the handoff. “The best part of giving new clothes for children and babies or new dishes, towels, and pots and pans to case managers is the look on their faces. They tear up as much as I do—and there’s a lot of hugging going on.”

Suzanne recalls a particularly impactful request. “About a year ago, we

Barbara Urban
Lauren Gross
Suzanne Katz

received a call from a caseworker whose client was a teenage boy with an illness requiring refrigerated medication. The family’s refrigerator had broken down, and they couldn’t afford a new one. Without it, the boy risked being removed from the home and placed in foster care. Through Quiet Giving, I was able to order and have a refrigerator delivered, allowing the family to properly care for him and remain together.”

Barbara shared another moving moment when a longtime case manager, “Carol”, called her about a woman with a baby outside a hospital who urgently needed diapers and formula. Barbara quickly emailed an e-gift card so the items could be purchased, and the woman was overwhelmed with gratitude.

“Hearing from case managers, therapists, and child advocates— about how grateful they are for what The Giving Tree does for their clients—is incredibly moving. It’s hard not to become emotional when learning about the hardships some face. I get flutters in my heart knowing I helped in a small way. I’ve also met so many wonderful women who work tirelessly for this organization. They are my coworkers and my friends,” shared Barbara.

These two humble volunteers represent the many Giving Tree volunteers and donors who find meaning in quietly and generously giving their time and resources to help strangers in need. Their stories remind us that the impact of Quiet Giving is felt just as deeply by those who give as by those who receive.

Through Children’s Eyes

DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

FOLLOWED BY CONVERSATION WITH MOVIE SCORE COMPOSER DAVID SHUKIAR THE HOLOCAUST AS SEEN THROUGH THE POETRY AND DRAWINGS OF THE CHILDREN OF TEREZIN

Tuesday, April 14

7:00pm

Schaefer Family Campus

Through Children’s Eyes is a powerful multimedia presentation that brings to life the poetry and artwork created by children imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp. Their words are set to evocative music, accompanied by their own drawings and paintings—poignant expressions of hope, fear, and resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. The documentary follows the creation of this moving tribute and the extraordinary journey leading to a once-in-a-lifetime concert held in the historic Attic Theatre at Terezin, a space that once echoed with music during the darkest days of World War II.

“As I composed the music for this piece, these children came to life for me. I could see their faces and hear their voices and I became deeply committed to sharing their stories and preserving their memory. After the premiere, my focus shifted to bringing the piece to life in the very place where the poetry was written—standing in the space where these precious children scream to us in silence through the walls of the camp.”

We’re looking for warm, caring volunteers to join our Chaverim Team—a group of Beth El members who strengthen our community through brief but heartfelt phone calls, made just twice a year: before Rosh HaShanah and before Passover.

This trip changed my life in ways I never imagined.”

As these words were shared during our final gathering, they echoed the feelings of the twenty women who embarked on this extraordinary journey to Israel. Organized by Temple Beth El in partnership with the Momentum Organization, this experience was far more than a trip—it was a pilgrimage of empowerment, connection, and spiritual growth.

Planning began in 2023, with our first cohort scheduled to travel in November. After the tragic events of October 7, trips worldwide were canceled, and continued challenges forced another cancellation in 2024. Finally, on November 15, 2025, eighteen congregants—alongside Senior Cantorial Associate Michelle Cohen and Temple President Gina Shugar—

1. Hostage Square

Momentum’s flagship program, the MOMentum Journey of Growth, is designed for mothers with children 18 and under. Its mission is to inspire women to transform themselves, their families, their communities, and the world through Jewish values, a deep connection to Israel, and unity without uniformity.

This trip embodied all of that—and more. The 2025 Temple Beth El Momentum group has distilled the journey into five life-changing moments they wish to share with our congregation.

On November 19, our group visited Hostage Square, a space dedicated to supporting the families of hostages. We walked through a replica tunnel, dark and unsettling, when a spontaneous singing of Hatikvah began. Emerging into the square, we found a crowd gathered around a piano honoring 22-year-old pianist Alon Ohel, kidnapped by Hamas at the Nova Festival. A sign on the piano read, “You Are Not Alone.”

During Alon’s 738 days in captivity, visitors and musicians played the piano in solidarity and hope. In an extraordinary moment, Alon himself appeared and played for the first time since his abduction. We surrounded him, sang, cried, and held sacred space for his powerful return.

2. Nova Site

Standing at the site of the Nova massacre was overwhelming. The weight of grief was palpable as we bore witness to the lives lost and the families forever changed. Amid the sorrow, we felt a deep sense of unity and responsibility—to remember, to honor, and to foster hope. Being there was both heart wrenching and transformative.

3. The Bonds of Friendship

The friendships formed on this women’s spirituality journey were deeply transformative. Through shared stories, reflection, laughter, and even spontaneous dance parties, a powerful sense of camaraderie emerged. These bonds remain strong after returning home, strengthening our connection to Israel, Judaism, and Temple Beth El, and reminding us of the power of shared experience.

4. Hearing Lone Soldiers Speak

Listening to American young women who left their lives to volunteer in the IDF was profoundly moving. Their strength, maturity, and sense of purpose were awe-inspiring. As mothers, we were deeply impacted by their resilience and dedication, inspiring us to nurture those same qualities—strength, compassion, and responsibility—in our own children.

5. Shabbat at the Kotel

Celebrating Shabbat at the Kotel was one of the most spiritually moving moments of the trip. Surrounded by ancient stones and vibrant energy, we felt a powerful connection to both our ancestors and future generations. This experience reinforced our commitment to passing down Jewish traditions and bringing the warmth and beauty of Shabbat into our homes.

As we boarded the plane to return home, a group text captured the essence of the journey:

• “It just started raining in Israel as we board the plane.”

• “Israel is crying now that we are gone.”

• “Israel will never be the same after our visit. Nor will we.”

SISTERHOOD CO-PRESIDENTS Sisterhood@tbeboca.org

Join us in our monthly Rosh Chodesh Women’s Group, where we will delve into the insights of celebrated women authors through their poetry and prose. In a nurturing atmosphere, we will participate in meaningful discussions and welcome the spirit of renewal and inspiration that each new month offers, while participating in various creative activities to explore our unique, personal identities as Jewish women.

College Connection: A Meaningful Mitzvah

Wednesday, February 25 and Tuesday, March 24 | 7:00–9:00pm Schaefer Family Campus Register at tbeboca.org/sisterhood

Join Sisterhood to assemble and package Purim and Passover goodies for Temple Beth El’s college students. Our college students may be celebrating these holidays on campus, but they will miss the special treats they would normally get at home. Whether you’re packing for a student you love or simply lending a hand, your participation is a wonderful opportunity to give back and help spread holiday joy and care.

Sisterhood Shabbat

Friday, February 27

The Expert In Orthopedic Spine Surgery

Dr. Norton is a world-leading expert in minimally invasive spine surgery and in office treatment of vertebral compression fractures with the kyphoplasty procedure. Dr Norton spends time when not seeing patients, teaching other surgeons cutting-edge minimally invasive surgical techniques. He recently even wrote a book chapter for a major spine textbook on how to do the kyphoplasty procedure in the office.

Throughout his career, Dr. Norton has had a strong interest in academic medicine and has been actively involved in teaching and research. He has authored multiple publications on a variety of topics related to spine surgery in numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. He has received several research grants and has presented his research at both national and international conferences.

Compression fractures of the spine occur most often in people with osteoporosis, after a fall, after a forceful cough or sneeze, or simply from bending over to tie shoes. Fortunately, he can treat patients with an easy solution called a Kyphoplasty, performed in my office in about 10-minutes. After numbing the area, he will simply place a small needle into the broken bone under x-ray guidance. He can then inject a small amount of bone “glue” to stabilize the broken bone. This is a permanent fix and serves to get rid of the pain from the broken bone and prevent further collapse of the bone so you don’t become deformed and hunched over. The pain is gone immediately and you can walk out of the office with just a Band- Aid! Skilled in the most advanced surgical techniques and emerging technologies, Dr. Robert Norton offers expertise in all aspects of spine care. His expertise and excellent surgical outcomes have earned him the nickname, “Miracle Worker.”
