A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
CULTURE HERO Ty Tabing is the new Cultural Affairs Director for the City of Pompano Beach. Tabing will manage Pompano’s cultural venues, oversee public art, and will activate The Crossroads initiative, a cultural trail uniting the Cultural Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts Center, and Ali Cultural Arts Center. Richard Rosser sat down with Tabing to see what he has in store for our area.
For the past 50 years, the building on 34th court in Lighthouse Point has been home to several beloved dentists. Dr. Jerry Klein, — known for handing out tooth brushes on Halloween — started his practice in 1972. Today, the completely renovated building is home to Bright Young Smiles. Drs. Jared and Catherine Young told us their story and offered a few dental tips in the process.

As I read the last sentence, I wept as if these two extraordinary women — whom I loved with every single atom in my body — were right beside me, sending me this message, “Whatever we had missed, we possessed together the precious, the incommunicable past.”
Creatively Speaking
For the record, my family is about as far from the pioneer life as you can imagine. We are New Yorkers, through and through. Yet, rereading Willa Cather’s American classic “My Antonia” gave me such an opportunity. I first read “My Antonia” as part of my tenth-grade summer reading assignments. My mother, an avid reader, reread the book that summer because it was one of her favorites.
The novel is narrated by an orphaned boy from Virginia, Jim Burden, who recounts his time living with his grandparents in Nebraska. Much of the book focuses on his friendship with Antonia Shimerda, the elder daughter of a family of Bohemian immigrants who live nearby. When it came time to write an essay about “My Antonia,” my mother was of great help. I remember sitting with her at our dining room table as she encouraged me to relate the story to my life. I thought she was crazy. The Great Plains of Nebraska seemed about as alien to me, a teenager living in Manhattan, as possible. But after having my own private book club session with my mom, we managed to do just that. It was September, and my family had just celebrated the Jewish High Holy Days. For the observant, driving is strictly forbidden on the High Holy Days. Yet there I was, in one of the most vibrant and modern cities in the world, walking home from synagogue, just as my forefathers had done a century ago in Europe.
Our Precious Stories
This time of year, as summer winds down and the High Holy Days approach, I find myself missing my mother and Debbie more than usual.
Decades later, after my mother passed away, my oldest sister Debbie read “My Antonia.” She knew it had been one of our mother’s favorites, and I think she read it as a way to honor her. I remember Debbie calling me and going on and on about how she loved it. “It’s just so good,” she repeated over and over. And then, only a few years after my mother passed away, my sister Debbie died unexpectedly.
BY SUSAN ROSSER
How could a novel about pioneers living in Nebraska towards the end of the nineteenth century connect me to my mother and older sister, who had both passed away within the last few years?
So I sat down with “My Antonia.”
Every year before Rosh HaShanah, as is tradition, Debbie called me to ask forgiveness for anything she had done during the year to upset me. Of course, I forgave her and asked the same. Oh, how I miss those phone calls. Yet, I was looking for a way to honor and remember my mother and sister beyond cooking my mother’s legendary stuffed cabbage or my sister’s favorite challah recipe.

SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE Dentists are skilled medical professionals who undergo extensive training to qualify. During their training, dentists acquire in-depth knowledge of the facial anatomy. Furthermore, a dentist can provide holistic diagnosis and advice to patients on issues that concern the face. Moreover, a dentist is very familiar addressing complications that arise in the facial area. Dentists carry out more invasive procedures in the facial area than any other healthcare specialist.
If you determine that your plan will still meet your needs, you can simply let it roll over to the following year. But, if you are unhappy with the upcoming changes, you should reach out to an independent agent to learn about the variety of other plans available in your area.
Insurance companies and their “captive” agents can only tell you about “their” plans.
MEDICARE ANNUAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD (AEP)
It Is Time
On the other hand, independent agents represent many companies and can often better assist you in finding a plan that fits your particular needs.
EXCEPTIONAL TRAINING Although dentists need additional training to administer Botox injections, they already have a wealth of theoretical knowledge in the facial area. So, they can make patients more comfortable during the treatment.
Pompano Picks 16 pointpubs.com • POINT! PUBLISHING The Benefits of Receiving Botox and Fillers From Your Dentist
COMPLICATIONS Although complications from Botox and fillers are relatively rare, they do happen. Problems can arise if you use an unregulated professional without required training. If issues occur, the practitioner will not be equipped to deal with the complications. Dentists are trained to monitor the procedure’s medical and aesthetic elements.
*Note that Medigap Policies (Medicare Supplement Plans) such as Plan F, Plan G, or Plan N are NOT affected by the Medicare AEP. Medigap plans DO NOT CHANGE. They are ongoing and guaranteed renewable as long as premiums are paid.
Some dentists may have experience using Botox in their dentistry work, such as when treating patients with dentures, orthodontic cases or patients with high lip lines. No other healthcare provider can help patients in the way a dentist can. Dentists are very accurate when it comes to injecting as they regularly inject the gums during dental procedures — ensuring a relatively painfree and quick injection. Dentists are now much more than a place to go for dental treatment; they are becoming recognized as a place where they can provide a one-stop shop for Botox, fillers and dental treatment.

The ANOC shows changes that will occur in the plans beginning on January 1 of the upcomingChangesyear.may include: • monthly premiums • doctors or hospitals added or removed from the plan’s network • copays or coinsurance amounts • increased or decreased dental, vision, or hearing benefits • the pharmacy network • prescription drugs added or removed from coverage • cost of covered drugs (tiers) and plan deductible • any other plan changes. You should be on the lookout for your annual notice of change and review it carefully. The notices may be sent by regular mail or by email. Always check your email spam or junk folders when awaiting these crucial emails.
BY DR. NELLY PEREZ
Dr. Nelly Perez, who goes by Dr. Nelly, has been a dentist for 10 years. She studied advanced general dentistry and completed a residency and fellowship in general dentistry at the University of Connecticut Health Center, where she practiced hospital dentistry, advanced restorative dentistry, and other disciplines. Dr. Nelly practices minimally invasive dentistry, implant dentistry, smile design, Invisalign, and esthetic enhancement with botox and fillers, in addition to more routine procedures.
Dr. Nelly is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
WHY CHOOSE A DENTIST FOR YOUR BOTOX OR LIP FILLER TREATMENT?
Whether you are a regular Botox user or new to fillers and Botox, it can be confusing who to choose for your treatment. Your dentist is perhaps someone that wouldn’t immediately spring to mind, but of all the professionals who specialize in these treatments, they are often a great choice. But why?
The Medicare AEP occurs every year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. This is when members of Medicare Advantage Plans or Stand-Alone Part D Prescription Drug Plans must decide whether to stay on their current plan or switch to a different plan that better fits theirEveryneeds.*September, these plans send out their Annual Notice Of Change (ANOC).

Riverside Drive Improvement Project Is Moving Forward
The city commission, at its July 26 meeting, approved on first reading a $699,762 contract with Marlin Engineering, the firm that will design the streetscape improvements.In2020,theBroward County Commission selected the project to receive full funding for the design costs. In addition, $5.2 million in surtax money has been set aside for the project’s construction and will become available to the city in the Accordingfuture. to Horacio Danovich, the city’s consultant, one of the key goals of the Riverside Drive improvement project is to realign the road to provide more buffer space between the travel lanes and private parking or driveways. 124-Unit Mixed-Use Development Is Proposed for Site of Vacant Kraeer Funeral Home
A new 8-story mixed-use development is being planned for the site of the vacant Kraeer Funeral Home at 200 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. The developer of the project is Yuri Gurfel of Pompano Beach-based Construction Art Forms. The building’s ground-floor commercial (retail) space would front Federal Highway. The residential component would begin on the ground floor with four townhomes along NE 22nd Avenue on the east side of the building, and two studios along NE Second Street on the south side of the building. Di Farina Pasta Factory, a popular Italian eatery in Pompano Beach specializing in homemade pastas and sauces, is getting ready to open a gourmet meat shop next door. Di Farina Meat Shop will be façade began early this year and was recently completed, featuring new signage, stone and paint.
The main concept is for patrons to dine at Di Farina Pasta Factory, and then continue to the meat shop to purchase items to take home. Di Farina Pasta Factory Is Opening a Gourmet Meat Shop
The restaurant serves about 70 different types of pasta that are handmade on-site and preservative free. The pastas are available for purchase to cook at home or can be enjoyed in the restaurant with one of the approximately 20 sauces that are made in-house daily. In July, the restaurant’s pastamaking station, or “factory,” moved into its own 1,200-square-foot adjacent space at 1909 E. Atlantic Blvd., allowing for more seating in the 2,500-square-foot restaurant. There are plans to demolish a wall in the restaurant and install a glass window to showcase the pastamaking station to diners.
Fernandez, the owner of Di Farina Pasta Factory (1915 E. Atlantic Blvd.), has run his own Miami-based meat distribution operation since 2008, handling grass-fed, imported and prime meats.“We have a passion for all things meat and high quality, so we wanted to expand these options to the people of our community,” said Fernandez.DiFarina Meat Shop will offer fresh and frozen meats. All fresh meat will be cleaned, packed and inspected in another facility prior to arriving on site. The meat shop will also sell items to build a barbecue, such as charcoal, wood and barbecue salt for the meat. Di Farina Meat Shop will be accessible through the restaurant.
Fernandez expects to spend approximately $255,790 for the addition of the glass window and Di Farina Meat Shop. In July, the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board approved a reimbursable Strategic Investment Program grant in the amount of $21,452 to go towards the costs.DiFarina Pasta Factory celebrated its grand opening in February 2021.

The approved plans for the Briny Residences development consist of a single building designed in a “coastal contemporary style,” with significant amounts of floor-toceiling glass. The building measures 105 feet to the roof line, plus eight feet to the mechanical equipment.
The project includes 2,700 square feet of ground-floor commercial space at the southwest corner of the building, fronting A1A. The space is envisioned to be a restaurant.

Briny Residences will feature one-, two- and three-bedroom units, ranging from 1,910 square feet to 2,312 square-feet. There will also be two townhomes with three bedrooms each. The townhomes will have two levels totaling 3,037 square feet.
The patios for each unit will range in size and are designed to be like “outdoor living rooms,” according to
Briny Residences Mixed-Unit Development Gets Site Plan Approval
Briny Residences — a 9-story, 40-unit mixed-use development planned for 305 Briny Avenue in Pompano Beach — is moving forward. The project received site plan approval from the planning and zoning board in July, and building design approval from the architectural appearance committee in TheAugust.site plan and building design went through several revisions during an approval process that began in 2019. The changes were a result of concerns raised by neighboring residents about increased density and traffic, particularly on Briny Avenue, which underwent streetscape improvements several years ago and is popular with pedestrians, but does not have sidewalks. The 1.3 net-acre project site is

The 52,679-square-foot anchor space was formerly occupied by WinnDixie, which closed in 2019.
The existing anchor space will be completely demolished and a brandnew Publix store will be built at the sameChristopherlocation.
A new Publix planned for the vacant anchor space at Shoppers Haven — the retail center located at the southwest corner of North Federal Highway and Sample Road in Pompano Beach — received approval from the Pompano Beach Architectural Appearance Committee in August and is now moving into the permitting phase.

A total of 100 parking spaces will be provided for the development. The building includes a pedestal with two stories of parking for residents and guests. On the west side of the building, there will be covered parking for the commercial space, and on Briny Avenue there will be 10 public on-street parking spaces.Vehicular access into and out of the building will be from SE Fourth Street.Thetower element atop the pedestal will be set back from Briny Avenue and A1A, creating a “stair-stepping” effect. The exterior building materials include perforated aluminum and porcelain tile cladding that looks like stone. The color palette is white, blue and grey. The current building design is significantly different from the original design, which was a 10-story curved building with 40 residential units, structured parking and ground-floor commercial space. In April 2021, the city commission approved the rezoning of the project site to increase the number of allowed residential units from 26 to During40. the rezoning process, a number of residents in the neighborhood voiced concern about increased traffic, density, shadows and reduced views, particularly from the Christopher House, which lies directly south of the project site. As a result, the building was scaled down by the design team, while retaining 40 residential units. Y
New Publix at Shoppers Haven include self-checkout stations. There will be an aesthetic paver-brick drive aisle in front of the store. The original plans included a Publix liquor store adjacent to the grocery store, but the liquor store was removed from the project. The second level of the building includes an amenity deck facing Briny Avenue, with a pool, spa, bar area and cabanas. The ground floor, in addition to the commercial space, will include a public lobby area and additional amenities, such as a gym.
Partridge of Partridge Equity Group, which owns and manages Shoppers Haven, said an application for building permits will likely be filed in less than six months, and the permitting process usually takes 45-60 days. Once the permits are obtained, the former Winn-Dixie space will be demolished, which should take about two weeks. In addition, 4,869 square feet of adjacent retail space will be demolished for the purpose of laying the Publix foundation. A smaller single-tenant retail space will be rebuilt Constructionafterwards.ofthenew Publix should take approximately 270 days to complete. The grocery store will consist of a 48,387-square-foot ground floor and a 3,060-squarefoot mezzanine lounge. The site plan indicates the checkout area will a Publix in The Shoppes At Beacon Light, which is also in Lighthouse Point, and about one mile south of Shoppers Haven. Partridge said that, for now, Publix’s plan is to keep all three stores open. In addition to redeveloping the Shoppers Haven grocery store space as a Publix, Partridge Equity Group will enhance the facades of the entire shopping center “to create a more modern and inviting appearance.” The existing parking areas will be reconfigured to improve accessibility. Once this renovation work begins, it will take no more than 90 days to complete, said Partridge. Partridge Equity Group also had plans to add a six-story multi-family residential building to the south end of the property. The residential building would feature up to 250 luxury rental apartments at market rates. For now, those plans are on hold and could be modified depending on market conditions, said Partridge. Y

The project is being developed by partners Neal Feinberg of Parkland and Carl Gordon of Boca Raton. Gordon is the principal investor in the project and an avid tennis player; Feinberg, who has approximately 25 years of experience in the tennis industry, would be the tennis center’s general manager and one of its tennis pros.
Plans are in the works to build an indoor tennis center on a 9-acre property located at 3100 W. Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach. It would be the first indoor tennis facility in Broward County.
“It’s a wonderful solution,” said Feinberg, who has previous experience managing an indoor tennis facility with a pneumatic bubble (Yorkville Tennis Club in New York City). “It’s substantially less expensive than building a hard structure, the construction time is shorter, and it’s industry standard.”
At the Pompano Beach facility, the tennis and pickleball courts would be a cushioned hard surface, which has the bounce and play of a traditional hard court, but is gentle on the knees and legs, said Feinberg.
LED lights would illuminate the courts and there would be divider nets between the courts to keep the balls from passing from court to

The tennis center would consist of a brick-and-mortar clubhouse with men’s and women’s locker rooms, a pro shop, a lounge, and possibly a café. The clubhouse would face Atlantic Boulevard. The tennis courts and pickleball courts would be housed in a climate-controlled pneumatic structure (known as a “tennis bubble”) adjacent to the south side of the clubhouse. The bubble — which would be accessed through a revolving door in the clubhouse — is durable and can withstand a Category 4 hurricane. In the case of a major storm, the bubble could be disassembled quickly.

The applications for the land use change and rezoning are scheduled to go to the city commission in September for a first and second reading. An acoustic barrier between the pickleball courts and tennis courts would likely be installed to muffle the popping sound a plastic pickleball makes when it hits the hard plastic racquet.
Feinberg anticipates the indoor facility would draw tennis fans from locations within an hour radius.

Honor the Struggle
When you have the opportunity to learn and serve, don’t complain about the effort involved. View struggle as a necessary, meaningful, and positive part of your journey to find true peace and personal power. Don’t bemoan the inevitable hardships of selfimprovement and chasing your dreams; have reverence for the challenge.
1 Going through the storm: You are actively dealing with a challenge that has you stressed and overwhelmed.
BY CRAIG HALEY LIFE IS FULL OF CHALLENGES, DIFFICULTIES, AND PROBLEMS. THEY JUST SEEM TO SHOW UP, AND OF COURSE, AT THE MOST INCONVENIENT TIME. PASTOR TOMMY BOLAND WHO LEADS The Cross Church in Deerfield Beach, says that you are always in three stages of life.
2 Coming out of the storm: Your challenge seems to be over for the time being, and you can breathe a sigh of relief.
3 You are about to head into the storm: Something is coming that will put you in crisis mode. When you have ambitious goals, challenges will arise. Building a new business can be difficult, especially in the early phase while searching for customers and hearing “no” a lot. It can be discouraging and disheartening. Committing to getting in shape is hard, and it seems to be the most challenging right at the beginning. Your body is sore and incredibly fatigued, and your mind tells you to take the day off and chill on the couch. Fixing a broken relationship takes effort and commitment to turn it around. It only gets more complicated when you disagree about various situations, and you are learning to disagree without beingHonoringdisagreeable.thestruggle does not mean you are free from life’s problems. It means you understand that challenges and obstacles are a part of the process of goal achievement — and of life for that matter. Just as the sun will rise in the east and set in the west, you will face difficulties on the path to goal achievement.
I like to see the challenges as God is trying to teach me something I need to learn. About 10 years ago, I had a business partner who was my original martial arts instructor since 1987. My wife and I discovered he had a shady past and needed to distance ourselves. Melissa and I got a lawyer and attempted to get our school under our control 100%. It was a long, tedious, and stressful process. It ended when my instructor passed away seven months later. Then after he was gone, we found out he had used my school in Lighthouse Point and the other 11 schools he had as collateral to purchase a large building for his headquarters. It cost me $142,000 to get my school out of probate and be able to rebrand, get back on track, and start growing the school again. Also, during that process, we lost over 120 students. Ouch!
32 pointpubs.com • POINT! PUBLISHING Personal Development
The challenge taught me a lot about business, relationships, and communication. I figured that the $142,000 was my investment in my MBA. Indeed, I had many sleepless nights due to stress, but I knew I had to stay positive and focused to come out of this crisis in better shape than I entered it.
When you honor the struggle, you stay calm in the eye of the storm, and you focus on what you can control. Don’t worry about what is out of your control because you can’t do anything about it.
Fortunately, that is exactly what happened. Honor the struggle when challenges knock on your front door. When life deals you some hard body shots, and you feel like you can’t handle it — step back and take a breath. Honor the struggle because you are preparing for greatness that lies on the other side. The Summer of the Traveling Pants
As I write this, I’ve yet to embark on either trip. But they’re looming, and I feel like writing about them, so you’ll have to virtually suffer along with me as my anxiety/dread about these trips, which have not yet happened, builds by the day. Both trips need to happen on time because both are events over which I have no control. One is sad — a memorial service for a dear friend — and one is happy — a wedding. The bright side of both trips is that I’ll be spending time with people I really enjoy — assuming, of course, that I actually arrive in time to attend the events.Yes,of course, I’m flying in ahead of time, leaving days — days — of leeway for whatever vagaries of Summer 2022 Air Travel befall me. And yes, statistically speaking, some flights arrive on time. And no, I’m not flying on that Flying Bus Airline that people either love or hate (take three guesses about which category I fall into).
BY DAWNE RICHARDS
This weirdly brings me to the second part of the title — Traveling Pants (I know, you’ve been dying to know where that fits). My obsession with owning clothes that have pockets has reached a fever pitch. Did you know that women’s clothes not having pockets is a real thing??? Of course, you do! This is a question asked by many people — 10.6 million, to be exact — as I learned when searching “Why women’s clothes don’t have pockets.”There. Another useless cocktail party fact with which you may fascinate your friends. You’re welcome.
YES, I’M AWARE THAT IT’S SEPTEMBER. WHICH, BY THE WAY, IS STILL SUMMER, AT LEAST UNTIL THE FIRST DAY OF FALL (hahahaha! Fall in Florida is a sick joke).
Wow, how shocking!
There are many theories as to why so many women’s clothes are pocketless, from the flat earth-level conspiracy theorists to — well, whatever you can imagine. This summer, I’ve come close to tossing every single article of clothing I own that doesn’t have pockets. I certainly won’t fly wearing something without pockets. Where else am I going to stuff all the snacks I need for the plane that don’t fit into my carry-on?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock (which sounds more appealing by the day), you’re likely aware that this has not been the best summer to be an air traveler. It might, in fact, be the worst summer ever to be an air traveler, which is, naturally, why I found myself making not just one, but two trips between late July and earlyDisclaimer:August.
If you’re still reading, I applaud your patience and will reward you by finally getting to the point of this column, namely, “The Summer of the Traveling Pants.”
Anyway, when you read this, I’ll be back from my trips. Hopefully, wearing clothes with pockets. Y

If business and civic leaders in Singapore hired Ty Tabing away from Chicago to develop their downtown project, I wanted to learn more about the person who will have considerable influence over the arts and cultural aspects of life in the Northeast Broward area and beyond.
SEPTEMBER 2022 • pointpubs.com 37
Richard Rosser: How did a small town boy end up in the big city — eventually being named the “Chicagoan of the Year” by the Chicago Tribune?
RR: So Singapore? This fact caught my attention — tell me why business leaders in Singapore would recruit you.
RR: ExplainPlace-making?thatidea,please.
TY TABING: Well, I went to grad school at the University of Chicago and lived on the South Side. I’m a Sox fan because I started out as a South-Sider. I fell in love with the city.
INTERVIEW BY RICHARD ROSSER
For a kid from Wichita, it was ‘bright lights, big city’ — just a heck of a place to grow up through my 20s, 30s and 40s and live the urban lifestyle. I spent eight years working for Mayor Daly in Chicago, so I was able to parlay that experience into running the downtown business organization, Chicago Loop Alli ance. I had been the mayor’s point person for downtown development projects, which became the first of four non-profits I have run in my career. I had a hell of a life in Chicago and would have stayed there indefinitely had I not had an amazing opportunity to move 10,000 miles from home to start a new non-profit in Singapore. (He lived for 24 years in Chicago)
TT: They wanted someone with ‘big city’ experience who had led infrastructure projects and created art, culture and place-making projects, so I was ultimately selected.Ilived there for a two-year assignment to launch a non-profit to revitalize the area along the Singapore river that runs through their downtown. The city was di vided into three sub-areas. I was brought in to create hard and soft components to unify the river and create a destination.
When I read the press release about the new leader of cultural affairs for the City of Pompano Beach, the cities of Chicago and Singapore appeared. I was intrigued. I have been to our country’s third largest city many times and was usually impressed by what I encountered there. And Singapore has the coolest airport on the planet by many measures, along with other smart investments.
TT: “Place management and development” is what it’s really called. That’s what I did in Chicago and Singapore. In Pompano Beach, my responsibility is city-wide, but I focused on specific areas in Chicago and Singapore. That’swhat I’ve done throughout my ca reer — I create trails of breadcrumbs to get people to go where you what them to go. Those breadcrumbs can be a little specta cle, create some sizzle, and put some show manship into events to get people to come.
When I graduated, I worked for a con gressman on capital hill in D.C. I didn’t care much for D.C., so I moved back to Chicago.
Ty Tabing Appointed New Cultural Affairs Director In Pompano Beach
TT: Wichita wanted to redevelop their down town — create some green space, a new convention center and a performing arts center — my background is really in urban planning. So if there were ever a moment to return to my hometown, this would be it, so I took a chance. That was working OK until the pandemic hit. The bottom fell out, and I reevaluated that plan. I decided to move to South Florida with no job and network my way into something. I met with RMA and Kim Breisemeister, and Earl Bosworth, the assistant city manager. I started consulting in February for the de partment of cultural affairs, then started full-time after two weeks.
RR: It seems like cities are more competitive these days. True?
TT: All cities are competing for tourists, that is for sure. So there is a need to create unique selling points. When I was in Chica go, we focused on architecture and culture. In Singapore, the two things that distin guished the place were the river and its his tory; the history of Singapore is tied to that river. It was the center of commerce that led to the skyscrapers that now fill the city. But yes, the competition among cities is more intense for sure.
RR: So, what is unique about Pompano Beach? TT: Transformation. The new downtown that’s being created, it’s no longer being called the innovation district, I understand. It’s a unique opportunity to create a mixedused area where there wasn’t anything before, to provide connectivity from the northwest side to downtown and old town — there are good bones. Fast forward five years from now, and Old Town is just hop pin’, with BaCA at the center of all that.

RR: With all due respect, the city has been talking like that for several years.
TT: Well, please remember that with Old Town Square (apartment building), there will be 500 new residents right there. That is a lot of purchasing power. That is a lot of people within walking distance for coffee, dinner and events and I think you will see some big changes because of that in addi tion to all the other things the city is doing. People beget people and need more people living in that area. What do you think Pompano Beach is do ing well? I think the city does vision and long-term planning well. The plans for Atlantic Boule vard and Dixie Highway — a 35 million dol lar project — those projects don’t happen overnight, and they are very hard to make happen. What I think the city is doing right is creating long-term visions that will dis tinguish Pompano Beach going forward.

RR: I’ve read that during the fallout of the 2008 recession, you hatched a plan to team up with local artists to create pop-up galleries in empty storefronts. It seems you have a history of turning sour grapes into wine. Where are the sour grapes in Pompano that have the potential to be good wine?

TT: Good question. So during the Great Re cession, we had over 50 vacant spaces in our project area, so my department was focused on economic development. But we started a program to activate dormant spaces with art. Now, we didn’t have the expertise, but our local stake holders like Art Institute of Chicago, 65,000 students downtown, including students at several art academies. We partnered with existing downtown organizations and groups like the Mexican American Art Mu seum, which was in a neighboring city but wanted to be downtown. Our only two rules were no nudity or political messages. We spent some money to decorate the windows and storefronts to present them in a professional manner, and the program just kept growing.

So, we program three venues: BaCA, the Ali cultural Art Center and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. They are very close — just one mile between them. Previously, the Nation al Endowment for the Arts provided funding to our cultural affairs department to activate a trail to connect these three venues with a program like Untapped. I want to develop a culture trail that con nects the spaces.
RR: What is a culture trail?
TT: It’s really a walking trail to incentiv ize movement. It’s like providing a little “something” — like the famous locks on the bridge in Paris, a place to sit, a sculpture, or whatever to keep people interested in mov ing along. When walking in cities, there is a lot of research showing that safety is essential, and when you can give people visual cues they can follow, they are more comfortable exploring deeper into an area There is a little of a science to this! The cues can help people think, “Oh, we can get from here to there, and it looks safe, and that thing over there looks cool, let’s go there.” INSET Ty Tabing RIGHT Architectural details at The Pompano Beach Cultural Center

TT: I’ve been talking to some of the build ing owners in the Old Town area and downtown to see if we can activate those storefront spaces and bring in artists, gal leries and studios. Bringing some life to the windows of the Old Town area would really animate events like “Old Town Uptapped” (the monthly street event in that area that has been running for a few years now). 42 Bright Young50CelebratesSmilesYearsofDentistry

As of 2022, there are 50 years of dental history at the building on 34th Court. Back in 1972, Dr. Jerry Klein practiced dentistry there. Dr. Klein, who passed away a few years ago, was a beloved member of the Lighthouse Point community — and was even selected as a “keeper” for Lighthouse Point Keeper Days. His daughter Beanie remembers that he was known for handing out toothbrushes on Halloween. Dr. Klein started his practice in Lighthouse point but then expanded with locations in Coral Springs and Boca Raton.
I met with Drs. Catherine and Jared Young, a husband and wife dynamic dental duo, to talk about the history of their thriving practice in Lighthouse Point. Before we started talking, Jared and I watched a video together chronicling their practice. At one point, I glanced over and noticed that he had teared up a little. When Jared realized I saw, he said, “Ya know, it’s just very emotional watching this.” Clearly, he is proud of what he and Catherine have built at Bright Young Smiles. “I just thought coming up on 50 years with the building and the location, there is quite a legacy here,” Jared said.

“Dr. Klein was definitely a character in the community — he was a yacht club member, football coach. Dr. Klein was very proud of his work,” Jared remembered.Wetalkeda bit about Dr. Klein’s practice, and Jared said people still remember him, “Everyone knows the practice from the pinball machines and the arcade,” he added. After about 10 years, Dr. Stephens joined Dr. Klein in his practice. Dr. Stephens, along with another pediatric dentist, worked at the three locations. The Youngs bought the practice from Dr. Stephens and later bought the building from Dr. Klein in 2014.

So by the time his wife Catherine joined him in the practice, he had a long list of adults searching for a new the practice includes three additional dentists. Don’toverboardgo with lemon in your water. Adding lemon to your water lowers the PH and can melt away enamel. How much is too much lemon? A wedge of lemon in a glass of iced tea or water isn’t too bad. But when people tote around an oversized bottle of lemon water and drink it all day long — that amount is too much for your teeth. 5
Don’t bite into hard fruit or corn on the cob. This biting motion puts extensive force on the front teeth. Unfortunately, some people’s front teeth have short roots making them susceptible to injury. She also mentioned that bonding on the front

Most people get most of their cavities by the time they are 20 years old. Then after 20 years, those fillings can start to break down, and you will need more dental work like crowns or root canals. He said the goal is to get patients to 20 without any or very few cavities. He added, “then you’re in really good shape.”
A few dental care tips from Dr. Jared Young
46 pointpubs.com
Jared’s path to dentistry was anything but ordinary. Initially, he dreamed of going to medical school to become a doctor. But when he was 18 and a senior in high school, he was in a horrible car accident and broke “practically every bone” in hisHeface.said the man “who put him back together was an oral surgeon — a dentist who does an extra four years of training after dental school.”
Dr. Jared Young’s number-one tip is keep up with your dental cleanings. A lot of bacteria in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body and have been linked to conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. “You want to keep the bacterial load in your mouth to a minimum.”Hesaidmany people are interested in teeth whitening, but “to be honest, there is no special secret; it’s only peroxide. That’s it. It is the only ingredient that ever whitens teeth. They can sell it in different formulations or shine a light on it. Nothing about whitening is lightactivated. Peroxide is heat activated, but your body temperature is what activates it, so shining a light at it during whitening essentially does nothing except enhance patient satisfaction. They like it. The patients love the light, but it has no effect.” I asked Jared how the practice of shining a light even began if it’s just a big waste. “Back when the lights were halogen and generated heat, there was some validity. But LED lights do not discharge heat, or very little,” he told me. He always recommends starting with whitening strips. He also mentioned that over the years, he has noticed little nuances. For instance, he noted, “there is usually one kid in the family who gets all the cavities for the whole family. And it’s usually the one who brushes and flosses, reads a book and goes to bed on time.” So there’s more to a healthy mouth than meets the eye. A patient’s immune system plays a role in their dental health as well as the quality of their teeth and saliva.
Jared has seven plates and 47 screws in his “Butface.after that, I was able to bounce back. I only missed a week of school.” After talking with Catherine and Jared, it becomes apparent that they are passionate about what they do and proud of their practice. When Jared started out, he took photos of himself with his pediatric patients and gave them to his patients in magnetic frames. 12 years later, he told me that he often runs into people who tell him that the photo is still up on their fridge. He smiled and added, “everyone saved those.”
