Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery

Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the first phone call, you will find my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs.

I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.

The Problem with Weekends

My Couch Has Lost Its Appeal

For a long time now, I’ve been working from home, and I love it for about a zillion reasons. First, there is the most obvious. I am a true homebody who works from home. I should be as happy as a fairy princess who discovered a hidden chamber filled with Manolo Blahniks and Christian Louboutins. Mostly, I am pretty happy because my work-from-home life comes with a ton of perks (even though there is no imaginary shoe closet). At the top of the list? Comfort. I can throw on leggings and an oversized T-shirt and call it office casual. I often joke that I swap my nighttime pajamas for my daytime pajamas.

I also love being able to multitask — taking a break to make the bed or unload the dishwasher instead of cramming all my household chores into the evening after a long day at an office. I mean, did you catch that? I just said I enjoy emptying the dishwasher. If that’s not proof of how much I value working from home, I don’t know what is. And dare I point out that this is hardly the life of a fairy princess with a secret shoe closet.

Lately, I’ve realized something unexpected: Commuting to an office five days a week has one significant advantage, even for a self-proclaimed couch potato.

Being away from home made me appreciate being home.

Back in my office days, a Saturday morning filled with absolutely nothing felt like a reward. After a week of braving I-95, pointless meetings, and enough petty annoyances to drive even the most rational being over the edge of sanity, sinking into my couch with a cup of coffee felt indulgent. I was the queen of my castle — even if the castle didn’t include a luxury shoe chamber. A good book or a binge-worthy show was all I needed.

Now, because I’m home all the time — often starting my day with my laptop on that same couch — Saturday mornings have lost their magic. Instead of a cozy retreat, my couch feels like my office minus the sub-par coffee.

So, if the weekend rolls around and I don’t have plans, I feel a little lost. After spending Monday through Friday at home, do I really

want to spend Saturday and Sunday in the exact same spot? At this point, it is worth mentioning that the secret shoe closet doesn’t exist, and even if it did, would it be a magical source of contentment?

It’s frustrating to realize that the ordinary pleasures that once brought me such joy now feel as thrilling as regrouting my backsplash. Worse yet, when I try to brainstorm reasons to get out of the house, nothing sounds worth the effort. Because, the truth is, after a long week of juggling deadlines, personalities and responsibilities, all I really want is to unwind in the comfort of my own home. It’s what us homebodies live for.

So what’s the solution?

Maybe I need to rethink my weekends the way I once thought about workdays. And while this sounds highly counterintuitive to a couch potato such as myself, I could plan one or two intentional outings — something simple, like a morning walk at the beach or a trip to a coffee shop. Or I could start super small and simply work from a different spot in the house during the week so my couch can go back to being my happy place.

I merely need to create enough contrast between work time and downtime so home feels special again.

Will it work? Who knows. But at least it’s better than spending another Saturday morning wondering why my couch has lost its charm and where is that darn secret shoe closet?

Legal Plan Checklist

I have touched on these subjects in many articles. Here is a condensed checklist.

1. Current Advanced Care Directives:

A. DESIGNATION OF HEALTH CARE SURROGATE for someone to make your medical decisions if you cannot communicate. Even if you are married, you must have this legal document, which must be current and done by a Florida lawyer. Do not rely on generic forms or documents you get from your doctor or a hospital or out-of-state documents.

B. LIVING WILL. Very specific Florida language regarding “pulling the plug.” Must be witnessed and notarized, and designate someone to make the final decision

C. DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY. Covers legal and financial matters while you are alive. Again, this needs to be done by a lawyer who is aware of current Florida law, including many specific powers that must be initialed by you to be valid. Our current document is 26 pages. When you die, the advanced care directives die with you.

2. Last will and testament.

If you are a Florida resident, you should have a Florida Will and your personal representative (executor) must be a Florida resident or a blood relative.

3. If you own real estate, in Florida or elsewhere, you need one of these to avoid probate when you die.

A. LIFE ESTATE DEED: You own property for the rest of your life, and you designate someone on the deed to inherit it without probate when you die. Be sure it is an “enhanced” (also known as

“Lady Bird”) deed to allow you to sell it without consent or joinder of the person you name.

B. TRUST AND DEED transferring property to you (and your spouse) as Trustee(s) of your Trust. This allows you to name contingent beneficiaries if your first choice dies before you or with you in a common accident. The Revocable Living Trust also allows you to buy future properties as Trustee and to Amend the Trust at any time while you are alive. The Deed to your home should have language confirming that it remains your homestead.

Talk to your lawyer about the risks of a life estate deed versus no risks for the trust.

The above documents should be completed with the assistance of an estate planning attorney. The following need to be done by you personally:

4. Beneficiaries

Designate beneficiaries on all of your accounts to avoid probate. This is also known as payable on death (p.o.d.), transfer on death (t.o.d.) or in trust for (i.t.f.). Also designate contingent beneficiaries. Each institution has its own forms, but it should not cost you anything except for some time.

5. Pre-Need Funeral Plans

If you know that you want to be cremated or buried, contact cremation societies or funeral homes to discuss pre-need plans. You will be signing a contract to pre-pay for your funeral, saving your loved ones a lot of stress, time and money. Be sure to give a copy of your contract to your primary and contingent personal representative so they know who to call.

6. Auto Insurance

Have car insurance that includes at least $100,000 of bodily injury liability (b.i.) and uninsured motorist (u.m.). Do not have any deductible on your P.I.P. (no fault). If you own more than one car, consider “stacking”, which allows you to double (two cars) or triple (three cars) your uninsured motorist coverage for a small additional premium. Uninsured motorist is the most important insurance you can have since Florida does not require bodily injury coverage.

If you do all the homework on this list, you are well on your way to getting an “A” in Legalities of Life 101. Y

Capital Gains & Estate Tax Planning

What High-Net-Worth Families Should Do Before Any Tax Changes

As the financial landscape braces for impending tax reforms, high-net-worth families must proactively strategize to safeguard their wealth. Anticipated changes to capital gains and estate taxes necessitate a thorough review and adjustment of current financial plans to mitigate potential tax liabilities and create a seamless transfer of assets to future generations.

Understanding the Impending Tax Changes

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 significantly increased the federal estate and gift tax exemption to $13.99 million per individual in 2025. However, this elevated exemption is set to sunset at the end of 2025, reverting to approximately $5 million, adjusted for inflation, unless Congress acts to extend it. This reduction could substantially increase estate tax liabilities for affluent families. *per Bloomberg Gov.

Strategic Actions to Consider

UTILIZE THE CURRENT LIFETIME GIFT TAX EXEMPTION With the exemption at a historically high level, now is an opportune time to transfer substantial assets to heirs tax-free. Gifting assets before the exemption decreases can effectively reduce the taxable value of your estate. It’s essential to consult with an estate planning professional to navigate the complexities of these transfers and maintain compliance with IRS regulations.

ESTABLISH AND FUND TRUSTS Trusts are versatile tools for asset protection and tax minimization. By placing assets into irrevocable trusts, you can remove them from your taxable estate, potentially reducing estate tax exposure. Trusts also offer control over asset distribution, making sure your wealth is managed and allocated according to your wishes.

ENGAGE IN TAX-LOSS HARVESTING This strategy involves selling investments that have experienced losses to offset gains in other areas of your portfolio, thereby reducing your overall taxable income. It’s a method that requires careful planning and timing but can be effective in managing capital gains taxes.

CONSIDER CHARITABLE GIVING STRATEGIES Philanthropy can play a significant role in tax planning. Utilizing vehicles like Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) allows you to make charitable contributions, receive immediate tax deductions, and recommend grants to charities over time. This approach may align with philanthropic goals while providing tax benefits.

REVIEW AND UPDATE ESTATE PLANNING DOCUMENTS

Regularly revisiting your estate plan ensures it reflects current laws and personal circumstances. Updating wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations is crucial to ensure your assets are distributed as intended and to take advantage of current tax laws.

EXPLORE LIFE INSURANCE SOLUTIONS Life insurance can provide liquidity to pay estate taxes and support heirs, preserving the value of your estate. Policies can be structured to keep proceeds out of the taxable estate, offering additional tax advantages.

MONITOR LEGISLATIVE

DEVELOPMENTS Tax laws are subject to change, and staying informed about proposed legislation is vital. Engaging with financial advisors who are abreast of these developments can help you adapt your strategies proactively.

Proactive planning is essential for high-networth families facing potential tax law changes. By implementing strategic gifting, utilizing trusts, engaging in tax-loss harvesting, considering charitable giving, updating estate documents, exploring life insurance options, and staying informed on legislative changes, you can effectively manage and protect your wealth. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Lessons in Leadership

from the Most Winning Coach in Sports History

Last month, we discussed Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, which he created after coaching the UCLA Bruins basketball team for 27 years, becoming the most successful coach in sports history. He won 10 National Championships in 12 years and had four undefeated seasons. It is highly unlikely that anyone will even come close to his achievements as a coach in the sports world.

Coach Wooden also developed his 12 Lessons on Leadership, which profoundly affected his abilities and results as a coach. We will break down the first six of them now and the second six next month.

Love is the Most Important Four-Letter Word

Good Values Attract Good People

Author, entrepreneur, and speaker Jim Rohn says, “Success is not something you pursue. It is something you attract by becoming an attractive person.”

He learned this from Coach Wooden. Coach Wooden had certain values he stuck to that many other coaches did not. For example, if a student was not meeting the academic standards to make him eligible to play, he would sit him on the bench. Nowadays, we have seen coaches ignore this rule, talk to their professors about bumping their grades up or getting their students to take easier classes. Not Coach Wooden! He was adamant that the primary reason that students were in college was to get an education; basketball was secondary, and he meant it. If his players did not adhere to the punctuality rules or dress code, they sat on the bench. Those values attracted disciplined, driven players with parents that had the same values. His values attracted good people!

Coach Wooden was a Christian and a deeply spiritual man. He encouraged his players to connect with one another, to learn about each other, and to show kindness and compassion to everyone.

He did not allow tempers to flare, vulgarity, and in-fighting among his players. He said that he liked some players more than others, but he loved them all.

Call Yourself a Teacher

Coach Wooden never referred to himself or other coaches as coaches. He thought of himself as a teacher. He believed in teaching his players to be successful in life, not just in basketball.

He was a principle-driven teacher. He taught strategies, concepts, and philosophies that would make his players successful in life as well as on the court. Many of his students at UCLA, including award-winning actor Beau Bridges and others he mentored, such as best-selling author and leadership expert John Maxwell, say that he taught them how to be successful in life, in relationships, and in business through his teachings.

Savor Tradition

Celebrate Kentucky Derby Day with Benedictine Sandwiches and a Mint Julep — Classic Southern Delights

Idon’t know much about horses or horse racing, but I have a deep appreciation for tradition. When I discovered the Benedictine sandwich, a classic dish often served at Kentucky Derby parties, I knew I had to prepare a batch for Derby Day. Luckily, this cool and creamy sandwich is just as refreshing on a hot afternoon in South Florida. Now you have the perfect idea for lunch.

The sandwich is named after Jennie Benedict, a successful restaurateur and cookbook author from Louisville, who first popularized it in the late 1800s.

Benedictine Sandwiches

Ingredients

1 8-ounces package of cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup scallions, finely chopped

1 cup English cucumber, peeled and roughly chopped

2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Dash of hot sauce, such as Tabasco

1/2 English cucumber, thinly sliced (optional)

1 loaf sandwich bread

Preparation

To make the spread, place the chopped cucumber in a food processor and pulse until finely minced. (Alternatively, you can grate the cucumber on the large holes of a box grater and finely chop all the scallions and dill.) Transfer the cucumbers to a towel or fine-mesh strainer and squeeze out any excess liquid. Return the drained cucumber to the food processor and add the softened cream cheese, scallions, dill, mayonnaise, hot sauce, salt, and pepper. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Spread the mixture evenly on half of the bread slices. If using sliced cucumber, place the slices on top of the spread before assembling the sandwiches. To make spreading easier, apply the remaining spread to the other slices of bread rather than trying to spread it over the cucumbers. This will also help keep the layers in place, preventing the bread from sliding around while giving the sandwiches a neater appearance.

Trim the crusts and cut each sandwich into four triangles. Arrange on a platter and serve.

Mint Julep

Makes 1 cocktail

Ingredients

10 to 15 fresh mint leaves, plus one sprig for garnish

2 tablespoons simple syrup

2½ ounces bourbon

Preparation

Place mint leaves and 1 tablespoon simple syrup in julep cup or 8- to 10-ounce glass and muddle the leaves with the 1 tablespoon of syrup.

Fill the glass with ice and pour the bourbon over the ice. Drizzle remaining simple syrup on top and garnish with mint sprig. Y

Que Syrah Syrah… for a Change

Idon’t know about you, but I get tired of drinking the same kind of wine too frequently. I enjoy tasting different wines, and not necessarily because some wines can get boring. Switching up wines provides perspective. There are differences and similarities among wines in how they taste and, importantly, in how they pair with food. We can’t really know those things unless we experience them. And that brings me to syrah, a grape varietal that produces some of my very favorite red wines, whether made entirely with syrah or blended with certain other grapes, such as grenache and mourvèdre.

If you haven’t had a glass of syrah recently, I suggest trying some. As with many wines, the flavors and other features of wines made entirely or significantly with syrah can vary based on many factors. Generally, though, good syrah wines share some enticing characteristics. I find them seductive. In the glass, they are typically deeply purple, sometimes nearly black. They’re aromatic, rich and bold, with various combinations of blackberry, raspberry, cherry, or blueberry aromas and flavors. They also have a distinct black pepper or spicy finish. But,, one of the things I like most about good Syrah wines is their texture. It’s velvety, often silky-smooth. Another characteristic of quality syrah wines is their pleasing balance of modest acidity, tannins, and alcohol. That balance helps them taste fresh and inviting without the astringency or heat of many other more tannic and alcoholic red wines. And, if you’re a collector, you may already know that many syrah wines can age beautifully for 10 or more years — that is if you can’t resist drinking them before then.

Happily, syrah wines complement many kinds of foods. They’re perfect accompaniments for roasted, grilled, or broiled meats, especially lamb, poultry, or roasted duck. They drink well with almost anything prepared on a grill, including sausages, ribs, salmon, and vegetables. They’re also go-to wines for venison and other game dishes, and they work well with mushroom or seasoned vegetable

dishes, such as risotto, ratatouille, or grilled vegetable kabobs. A cheese plate served with syrah or a syrah blend is an especially yummy combination. In addition, syrah can pair with strongly flavored or exotically spiced (i.e., Indian, Malaysian, or North African) dishes, provided they’re not too spicy-hot.

A Primer for Buying Syrah Wines

Not too long ago, most syrah was grown in the Rhône River region of southeastern France, the grape’s ancestral home, and Australia, where it was introduced in the 19th century and is usually called shiraz. Lucky for us, syrah is now grown in the rest of southern France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Outside Europe and Australia, syrah is grown in most notably California, Washington State, Chile and Argentina, Israel, and South Africa. All these places produce serious syrah wines.

You’ll usually need to look by country or region to buy syrah wines in a local wine store. Occasionally, they might be shelved by grape or wine style. Bottle prices may vary greatly, as they do with many wines depending on their origin, quality, and availability. Often, better syrah wines fetch higher prices because their quality is high and their production is relatively small compared to cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir, for example. The best buys

tend to be available from France and Australia, the largest producers of syrah wines. But don’t count out wines from other areas. I’ll focus here on syrah wines from France, Australia, and the Americas.

Wines made with syrah will range from under $10 to $100 or more. Some, especially from the Rhône, sell for hundreds of dollars. I recommend spending at least $15 at the low end. Wines selling for less will likely have been made from cheap, lesser-quality grapes and will lack the richness, velvety texture, and other distinctive qualities of better syrah wines.

France

Most French syrah wines come from the Rhône region, although the LanguedocRoussilon region to the west also produces many both pleasurable and modestly priced syrah blends. The Rhône has two distinct subregions. The Northern Rhône is known principally for wines made entirely or almost entirely from syrah. These wines are named principally for the towns or districts where their grapes were grown, such as Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage, Côte Rotie, and Hermitage, the pinnacle of Northern Rhône wines. Many of these wines are quite pricey. However, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph wines can be found starting at around $20-30.

wine. Australians call it shiraz, and they excel at its production in all price points. Indeed, its huge production of outstanding as well as bargain-basement shiraz wines cemented Australia’s reputation as a winemaking powerhouse. Australian winemakers and distributors also get kudos for giving their wines amusing names, like “Gnarly Dude,” “The Boxer,” “Two Left Feet, and “Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch.” But don’t let the lighthearted names or labels lead you to believe that such wine are not serious wines. These specific wines, among many others, are delicious and well worth trying.

Most shiraz wines come from areas along and near the coast of southeastern Australia. Some of the leading regions for producing shiraz wines are the Barossa, Eden, Clare, and Yarra valleys as well as New South Wales, McLaren Vale, Victoria, and Coonawarra. Many of these regions also grow excellent cabernet sauvignon, grenache, and other grape varietals that vintners often blend with shiraz. Definitely consider trying Australia’s blends of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon; good ones are lush and powerful wines that combine attributes of both grapes. And there are plenty of wonderful Rhône-style blends, too.

My favorite shiraz wines come mainly from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. For tasty, lighter styles or versions of shiraz, seek out wines from Victoria or New South Wales. Some producers to look for are D’Arenberg, Duval, Elderton, Henschke, Kaesler, Mollydooker, Penfolds, Torbreck, Two Hands, and Yalumba. You’ll likely see some Australian shiraz for under $10. However, my suggestion is to spend more to enjoy significantly better quality.

The Southern Rhône is home to luscious syrah blends, made with various combinations of other grapes, such as grenache, mourvèdre, cinsault, and carignan. In fact, you may have had a wellknown Southern Rhone syrah blend without realizing its contents. The popular red and rosê wines labeled Côtes-du-Rhône are made principally with grenache, syrah, and mourvèdre (hence the acronym GSM), although they may contain many other varietals. They’re typically priced between $12 and $35 per bottle at retail. The highest quality Southern Rhone syrah blends are from the districts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. They sell generally between $35 and $150 a bottle. Others blends to try are from the districts of Vacqueyras, Rasteau, Ventoux, and Vinsobres. My favorite by far is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It’s an ideal wine for special occasions. Some notable producers of Northern Rhône wines are Chave, Chapoutier, Delas, Jaboulet Aîné, Graillot, Guigal, and Vienne. Some often seen Southern Rhone producers include Beaurenard, Guigal, Halos, Janasse, La Nerthe, Mont-Redon, Perrin, Sabon, and St.Cosme. However, there are literally dozens of excellent producers to choose from. For Languedoc-Roussillon syrah wines, you might see Bertrand, Hecht & Bannier, LaFage, Maris, Jean-Claude Mas, and Paul Mas, among other notable producers.

Australia

Syrah is Australia’s most widely grown grape and most important

United States

A relative newcomer to the United States, syrah is grown mainly in California and Washington State. My favorite American syrah wines come from California’s Central Coast areas near Santa Barbara and Monterrey. Syrah’s from these areas tend to be uniformly delicious. Napa and Sonoma counties produce many fine syrah wines as well. Unfortunately, production is relatively small compared to more popular red wines. Consequently, availability in stores and online tends to be a problem. Plus, prices generally start at around $25-30 and go up from there. Relatively few sell for less. Some producers to look for are Tensley, Bedrock, Tablas Creek, Alban, Roar, and Vermillion.

Washington State also makes many outstanding syrah wines at prices ranging between about $20 and $75 a bottle, with a good number under $30. These come mainly from the Columbia Valley and the Walla Walla Valley, which straddles the border between Washington and Oregon. These syrah wines are very enjoyable and have their own character, some being a bit lighter than their California cousins. But they’re still bold, smooth, and full of fruit, spice and rugged earthiness that some feel is special to Washington syrah. Some of the many producers of both 100% syrah and syrah blends are Desert Wind, Dunham, Dusted Valley, Mark Ryan, Two Vintners, Avennia, Betz, Cayuse, and Chateau St. Michelle.

So, try some syrah for a change. Que sera, sera. Y

Peace & Quiet

Every year, when my sisters and I asked our mother what she wanted for Mother’s Day, she would always respond, “a little peace and quiet.” She shared that this was the same answer her mother used to give. Because I appreciate tradition, I made sure to pass this down to my own kids. In that spirit, here are some simple ways to show Mom you love her, without all the hooplah.

5 CREATIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE MOM

While most mothers enjoy a dining out on mother’s day, here are some inventive ways to show appreciation without reservations.

A TIME CAPSULE OF LOVE Gather letters, small gifts, photos, and mementos from family members and seal them in a decorated box to be opened on a future Mother’s Day. It’s a sentimental way to show appreciation that lasts beyond just one day.

CUSTOM FAMILY STORYBOOK Write and illustrate a short book about your mother’s life or a funny family memory. Print or hand-bind it for a one-of-akind keepsake she’ll treasure.

MEMORY LANE ADVENTURE Plan a day revisiting meaningful places from her past — her childhood home, where she and your father first met, or the spot where she used to take you as a kid. Capture the day with photos and anecdotes.

A “YES” DAY FOR MOM Instead of the usual pampering, let her call all the shots for the day. Whatever she wants — breakfast in bed, an impromptu road trip, a movie marathon — her wishes take priority.

PERSONALIZED RECIPE LEGACY

Gather her favorite recipes (or family ones) into a beautifully designed cookbook, complete with personal notes, photos, and anecdotes about why each dish is special. It’s a heartfelt way to preserve her culinary traditions.

TEN YEARS

Rapa Nui Revisited

PHOTOS BY HOWIE GRAPEK, GPO PHOTOGRAPHY

ORIGINAL REPORTING BY MICHELE CARASSCO

The Rapa Nui sculptures photographed in 2015 under the sea off of Deerfield Beach

IT WAS 10:00AM ON SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2015, when anticipation buzzed along the Deerfield Beach Pier. Locals and tourists gathered for a spectacle unlike any other: the planned sinking of the Rapa Nui artificial reef — a public art project designed to create an impressive underwater display to attract tourists and locals for an enjoyable dive.

Among the crowd was local spear-fishing legend and diving advocate Jim “Chiefy” Mathie. At the time, he greeted the group of VIPs and supporters with excitement, explaining how the ambitious project evolved from a vague concept into reality.

Then came the twist. About an hour later, the reef sank — just not as planned. Instead of settling upright on the ocean floor, the barge tipped, and the entire structure was upside-down.

Now, a decade later, Mathie has a different perspective.

“It serves its purpose,” he said. “It’s an artificial reef, and that’s the goal — to attract marine life. And that part? That worked.”

FROM ART TO RUBBLE

When divers descend to the site today, they won’t find the grand moai-style statues standing in formation. “It’s all rubble now,” Mathie explained. “It flipped over and settled into the sand. On the west side, there’s a sort of opening where you can look underneath, like a little cavern, but it’s not something I go into — you never know when things might shift.”

After the initial failure, there were attempts to recover parts of the project. “DX Divers brought up two or three of the moai heads from under the wreck and placed them on the barge, which, of course, was now upside-down,” he recalled. “They lasted maybe a year before a storm knocked them down again.” Even those fragments have since disappeared. “I don’t even remember seeing any of the moai left down there now,” Mathie added.

A SHIFT

The Rapa Nui incident may not have gone as planned, but it marks a turning point in how artificial reefs are deployed in South Florida.

“The same group that worked on Rapa Nui also sank the Miracle of Life and Lady Luck,” Mathie said. “Back in the day, they used to make a big spectacle. Not anymore. Things have changed a lot.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) now actively supports artificial reefs and shipwreck projects as a way to promote marine ecosystems and relieve pressure on natural coral reefs. “It used to be controversial, but now they realize more structure spreads out the fishing and diving activity, which helps the reefs recover,” he explained.

From a would-be underwater museum to an accidental reef, Rapa Nui has become a local legend — and a cautionary tale. But in the eyes of Jim “Chiefy” Mathie, it’s also something else: proof that even a flop can find a second life under the sea. Y
