Kickstarting the first season of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center’s arts programming will be the world premiere of “Shipwrecked of Reason – Half a Century in Cuban Art”. On loan from the Cuban government, the exhibit features 20 Cuban artists curated by worldrenowned Cuban contemporary art expert Isabel Marie Pérez Pérez.

Daughter of Elaine IT’S SPRINGTIME, WHICH IN MY MIND MEANS it’s time to look for a new purse. Sure, this sounds easy enough and something most women enjoy. But, as I search for the perfect summer bag, I hear my mother’s voice in my head saying, “Never buy a pocketbook with a black lining.” This simple rule eliminates many top contenders for my 2017 summer bag. I suppose, if we’re lucky, our parents impart their accumulated wisdom upon us. And while the major lessons are the ones I often think are the most valuable…be kind, work hard, do good… it’s the little things my mother taught me that play like a loop in my head and often bring a smile to my face. Which brings me back to my handbag search. Each time I open up a prospective purse and see that ubiquitous black lining, I hear my mother say “Oh no, you’ll never be able to find anything in there.” And I must admit that every time I have bought a handbag with a black lining, I have lived to regret it. What woman hasn’t dug for her car keys in a dark parking lot? Who am I kidding? I’ve dug deep inside my purse, searching for keys or lipsticks while standing in my own kitchen. Pearl divers have an easier time recovering oysters from the sea. Just a few weeks ago, my husband Richard and I decided to attend a black tie gala at the last minute. No problem for me in the dress department because my mother’s fashion mantra is “When you see a pretty dress you like, buy it; because you can never find a dress when you need one.” (To all the women of Northern Broward County— you’re welcome.)

It was my mother who taught me you can pass off leftover meatloaf as pate— and I thought of her the other night, as I tried to serve some “pate” to Richard with a glass of wine. Of course there are plenty of other peripheral lessons from my mom, such as: always have cab fare home; everything is better with an egg; humor at the expense of others is never funny; and smaller chickens are tastier than big ones. Naturally, I am grateful for everything my mother taught me, but I love that I can’t buy a chicken without thinking of her. I love that when I eat cold, leftover meatloaf, I picture her winking at my dad as she offers him “pate” and a dry martini. My sisters and I have coined a nickname for ourselves. Whenever we realize we are doing or saying something exactly how our mother does, we call ourselves “daughter of Elaine.” I know that I often sound just like my own mother. I say the same stuff, in the same manner, at the same times, with all the same emphasis. Yes, I’ve become my mother—which lucky for me, is a good thing. I hope someday my kids can say the same.

OCEAN BREWS & BLUES FESTIVAL

Deerfield Beach will host the first annual Ocean Brews and Blues Festival, a beachside event where guests can listen to blues music and sample an assortment of more than 100 craft beers from across America. Food vendors, arts and crafts will also be available. “This first-year event came to life as we wanted to bring a new and exciting event to Deerfield Beach for the community and our surrounding communities,” said Cassi Waren, the Superintendent of Community Events. “We are excited for the first year and cannot wait to see the growth of the event come to life. If you are into craft

brews and blues music, make sure to come out – the event will not disappoint.” WHEN: Saturday, May 20, 3-7pm WHERE: Main Beach Parking Lot, 149 SE 21st Ave., Deerfield Beach. Parking on the barrier island will be limited during the event. Attendees can make the short walk across the Hillsboro Boulevard Bridge or take the complimentary shuttle service from The Cove Shopping Center. The shuttle will run continuously from 2:30-7:30pm. COST: Tickets are available from April 9 to May 19 for $40. Event day tickets will be $45. All tickets include unlimited sampling (from 3-6:30pm) of more than 100 beers, plus a souvenir glass. beach bits Bill Ganz wins Mayoral Race

Former longtime City Commissioner Bill Ganz is Deerfield Beach’s new mayor. Ganz won 39 percent of the vote on March 14, largely due to successful margins from his district constituents. Ganz also won big leads in Century Village East (District 3) where he got 464 votes out of the 867 cast. When all 6,010 votes were counted, Ganz had 2,327; Ken Wayne 1,575; Gwyn Clarke-Reed 1,131 and Ben Preston 977. Joining Ganz on the commission will be Bernie Parness in the central District 3 and Todd Drosky in western District 4.

Sample-McDougald House Announces Extended Hours of Operation

On March 1, the Sample-McDougald House officially opened for visitor tours with an additional two days available per week. Tours are now offered Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4pm, with the last admission at 3pm. As part of the historic house’s mission to be a heritage destination for tourists and residents, additional opening hours provide more opportunity to engage with the public. The Sample-McDougald house was built in 1916 on the site of a pineapple farm and was home to two significant Pompano Beach families, the Samples and the McDougalds. Listed on the Local and National Register of Historic Places, the 17-room Georgian Colonial structure is one of Broward County’s oldest architecturally significant homes. Admission is $5 per person. Driver’s Ed Gets a Whole New Meaning BY MISS ADVENTURE PHOTOS BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

I COULD FEEL A WALL OF PRESSURE ON MY CHEST AS WE launched down the straight of the Homestead-Miami Speedway in a Porsche GT4 like a jet taking off down a runway. I braced my heel on the floorboard as a jolt of adrenaline rushed up my spine and my back pressed firmly against the car’s bucket seat. I could feel the vibration of the track through my helmet and a buzz in my teeth as we whipped around corners, grazing the racing strips with each hairpin turn. As we came up tight behind the car in front of us, I gripped the door handle a little tighter and breathed deeply to fend off potential nausea. The experience quickly felt surreal, as if we were merely players in an arcade game. This, however, was entirely real — a fact my mind strained to remind me of. I felt an exhilarating mixture of excitement, joy and fear. With each loop and launch of the track, my vision narrowed and my periphery blurred — a form of tunnel vision bad for drivers, dubbed the “Red Mist.” Luckily, I wasn’t driving. Instead I was the lucky passenger riding with Steve Feibus, a Lighthouse Point resident, senior Porsche Club national driving instructor, and member of the Gold Coast Porsche and BMW Owners Club (PBOC). The PBOC is an auto club that organizes events for new and advanced drivers to get experience driving their prized vehicles on professional racetracks. The club calls these events “Driver’s Education.” For new club members (or in my case, honorary members), the event begins with a classroom session, which teaches the basics of racetrack rules, flag colors, the drive line, passing and other

safety information. Following the classroom session, drivers are assigned an experienced instructor who accompanies them on the track and teaches them driving techniques, like when and how to accelerate, brake, turn, float or control the car. “Some of these things can be somewhat counterintuitive,” said Feibus. “For example, on the turns. A lot of new people will brake when they should accelerate. Pressing the gas pulls the car down to the track so it doesn’t spin out.” The PBOC hosts six similar “Driver’s Education” events at speedways throughout the year. The day I attended in March, the event was co-sponsored by the Porsche Club of America (PCA). Renting the track can get expensive, so co-sponsoring events with other auto clubs is a good way to network and be fiscally smart. The March event gathered 76 student drivers and 10 Super Solo drivers. Super Solo members are drivers who have gained enough experience, instruction and vetting to go on the track solo, which usually takes a year or two. “Until an instructor is convinced that you have acquired the skill set to be safe, then you can’t advance,” said Bob Schuster, who is the director of Super Solo for PBOC, and has been involved with similar auto clubs for 33 years. During these events, the use of the track alternates between student, Super Solo, racing and race qualifier rounds. The Super Solo rounds are generally at higher speeds and have less restrictions. For example, Super Solo drivers can pass a car on either side at will, while during the student rounds, a driver must


be given permission to pass on one side or the other by the preceding driver in the form of a hand signal. After advancing one’s skills as a Super Solo driver, club members then have the opportunity to go one step further and become an instructor themselves. “Not everybody becomes an instructor, but eventually you evolve,” said Schuster. Bob Varela, PBOC’s President, Competition Director, co-founder and co-owner, said passing on the skills and knowledge is part of the culture. “Somebody had to teach me, so I feel I owe it to teach someone else,” he said. Some skills, however, can’t be taught. “You need to be able to focus. You need an attention span. You need to almost have a sense, where you can see a shadow and be aware of it,” Varela said. Schuster agreed. “You have to be extremely intuitive,” he said. “You have to drive within the rules. You cannot defeat the laws of physics. You have to be what I call a ‘selfless driver’ — not overly courteous, and not discourteous. There’s a sweet spot that you have to hit.” Schuster said the biggest rookie mistake is that new drivers want to go too fast. “They have a 700 horsepower car and a 60mph brain and that doesn’t work,” he said. “New drivers will try and impress you with their speed, but that does not impress senior instructors. What impresses senior instructors is the ability to listen, take good direction, and execute as expected.”

The Evolution

Varela (who also owns Foreign Affairs Motorsports in Pompano Beach) has seen clubs and driver’s schools like the PBOC evolve over the years. Varela is one of the local pioneers of the club sport. He has been involved with racing since his teens. “I used to drag race in high school and college. I put myself through college drag racing,” Varela said. “I got into road racing in my early 20s in Europe, drove professionally for about a half a year, then started amateur racing and running some pro teams.” In 1978, Varela opened his own sports car business. “We thought, well, our customers would probably like to do this,” Varela said. “We worked on getting programs going and by the end of the 90s we had a performance driving school running here in South Florida.” Varela’s early driving school had only 40 members, including himself. “We each put $1,000 in because you have to pay for the tracks ahead of time. We were just racing and having fun. Some of the guys went on to do pro. We decided at that point that we needed to grow our own racers, so to speak,” Varela said. Now, the club has approximately 3,000 members, according to Varela. Not all the members race. The club hosts other, more social-oriented events. “We do drives where we’ll take 130 Porsches and we’ll drive to Key Largo for lunch,” Varela said. “In three weeks, we’re going with about 75 or 80 cars to Everglades City for stone crab. And then a group will stay overnight.” The club also does Auto Crossing, which is essentially an obstacle course that helps drivers hone technical skills at lower speed. “We have our own mini car shows with concoursing too, which judges cars on detailing, cleaning and originality,” said Varela. “When you get heavily involved in the club, and you’re passionate about the cars, you kind of start volunteering for a lot of stuff. You meet a lot of awesome people. You make a lot of new friends from all over the country and Canada. It’s fun. Pure fun.” As an honorary member for a day, I’d have to agree: Pure fun. Lunch Time SOMETIMES THE OCEAN REMINDS ME OF THE LINE FROM Forrest Gump: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna to get.” Depending on the wind, the ocean can range from calm to catastrophic. The currents can either be mild or strong and can flow north, south, east or west. Sometimes the visibility can be crystal clear or so poor it’s a struggle to see what’s in front of you. As a diver, you accept these changing conditions. Very few days are identical. Even the variety of marine life seems to be altered every time you take the plunge. On some dives, there’s an abundance of marine life including turtles, stingrays and sharks; but some days there is nothing more than a few reef fish scattered around a barren, desolate oasis. When you have a day filled with ideal conditions and a large variety of marine life, you learn to appreciate everything the ocean has to offer. A group of us I refer to as the Chiefy Crew has, for many years, dove from the Lady Go Diver boat every Thursday. Owner Arilton Pavan established this underwater hunting day many years ago. The crew changes members occasionally, some coming and going, but the core group finds its way every Thursday to the dive boat of Dixie Divers in Deerfield Beach. It picks us up at the southwest corner of Marina One, conveniently located adjacent to Duffy’s Sports Bar where there’s ample parking. A while back, the Chiefy Crew started to include an after-dive lunch at Duffy’s to decompress and share stories. Melissa, the bartender would serve us some adult beverages and some tasty, plentiful food. This routine served the crew well, but recently, some of the guys wanted to change things up. We decided to name our new lunch adventures Dive & Dine. We would bring our day’s catch to local restaurants and have the chef whip us up lunch with the fruits of our labor. Just like we never know what we will catch, the chef has no idea what we will bring in. For our first Dive & Dine, seven of us went to Barracuda Seafood Bar & Grill at 1965 NE Second St., Deerfield Beach. The owner, Kenny Nassar, welcomed us. We didn’t give chef Fernando Ferreira any direction, but he clearly didn’t need any. He fried our freshlyspeared hogfish whole and served it to us as an appetizer. This is a traditional Brazilian method of cooking fish, and it was delicious. The main entrée consisted of lobster chunks tossed with fettuccine Alfredo, with grilled lobster tails on the side. Our first experience was so successful, we tried it the following week at Rattlesnake Jake’s Bar & Grill at 2060 NE Second St., by the beach in Deerfield. That day had a few different crew members and the prized fish was a 26-inch hogfish speared by Wilson Diaz. He gladly donated the fish and most of us contributed a few more, plus some lobster tails, to embark on Dive & Dine, part deux. Chef Ari and Chef Junior gladly welcomed our group of 11 divers. The variety of dishes made this adventure memorable. The chefs started with spicy hogfish rolls and yellow jack sashimi-style with Jake’s bam-bam wasabi. The large hogfish was prepared multiple ways, starting with a beer-battered version served with sweet chili sauce, followed by blackened and grilled with a mild lemon sauce with mushrooms. The grilled lobster tails were butterflied, and smothered in butter and garlic. Each dish tantalized our taste buds as the seemingly endless treats from the ocean were prepared for our delight. This is not to say we won’t go back to visit Melissa and Duffy’s Sports Bar, but for now, the Chiefy Crew likes the Dive & Dine aspect of our Thursday adventures. I RECENTLY LEARNED OF A GROUP CALLED THE “Highpointers Club” whose members’ mission in life is to climb the highest peak in every state. In Florida, that would be Britton Hill in Walton County. The “mountain” there stands 345 feet above sea level. I’ve had hives that were bigger than that. The Walton County seat is DeFuniak Springs. I tell you this because I find the name amusing. But, I digress. Highpointers actually travel to the middle of nowhere to climb this hillock, which takes all of five minutes. It takes two minutes to walk back down. Finding the place is the hardest part. It is 400 miles from the Expedition Everest ride at Walt Disney World. Most people who end up at Britton Hill are looking for a bathroom. Those tenacious enough to reach the summit are greeted by a local woman who keeps a guest book for the mountaineers. Climbers leave comments such as: “Wow, I can see all the way to the next field.” “I came back with all of my carabiners.” “Made it without oxygen.” The club recognizes the highest peaks as published by the U.S. Geological Survey. However, there is a rumor that near Britton Hill is a spot seven feet higher. And you thought Florida was flat. Mountain climbers must all be masochists. How else to explain spending big bucks and risking your life to get to the summit so you can take a selfie, then climb back down? Why not just buy the postcard?

While I grant that people have the right to pursue this dangerous hobby, I resent having to spend taxpayers’ money and risk innocent lives to save them when they get stuck on the mountainside. Those who are rescued should be punished. I suggest forcing them to live for a year in Death Valley, 282 feet below sea level. I have established a counterpart to the Highpointers, which I call the Otis Club. I chose the name Otis because that firm is the largest manufacturer of elevators in the world. The fact that the company was established in 1853 also gives it more panache. (Why they needed elevators in 1853 is beyond me.) Members are challenged to ride elevators to the top floor of the tallest building in every state. Sherpa guides are provided, but no climbing equipment is allowed, nor is bottled water permitted. Since this is a competition, points are awarded in categories such as: fastest time; fewest stops to reach the top; best music; most crowded; least body odor detected, etc. At the end of the year, points are tallied and various prizes are awarded. This year, first prize in the male category will be a one-year subscription to “Exterminators Quarterly.” First prize for the female winner is a date with Jim Carrey. Second prize is two dates with Jim Carrey. Come join the Otis Club and give new meaning to the term “getting high.”

In honor of the lighthouse, Art Makenian, the lighthouse keeper for almost two decades and the former President of the preservation society, shares his passion for the nation’s brightest lighthouse and Broward County’s oldest functional structure. flew all over the world, later sold jet engines for General Electric and had his own company. He was born in Alexandria Egypt, met his wife in Beirut Lebanon and speaks multiple languages. He joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary thirty years ago to gain a better understanding of boats, but his expertise in engineering eventually led him to be recruited in 1998 to maintain the lighthouse. He knew nothing about lighthouses at the time, but used his knowledge of mechanics to self-educate himself. “All these things contributed to my getting involved with the lighthouse because basically it is a mechanical function,” Art said. Art is an engineer at heart. Inside the lighthouse he has tacked up drawings of the mechanical structures that make the light glow, the eye spin and the tower stand. He has two versions of drawings — one when the light used to spin floating atop a base of mercury, the other one after Art helped a team of mechanical engineers convert the lighthouse to a ball-bearing rotational system (a strugglesome feat that took four years). Art hands me a sample of a giant ball bearing and carefully explains how the motor makes the light structure rotate. Then he lets me mount a few steps to look at the actual bulb and the expensive lenses that refract its light. Going up into the heart of the light is like crawling into the center of an enormous diamond. The bulb is surprisingly small — only a few centimeters tall — but the remarkable French lenses that surround it are stunning. They are thick, arched pieces of glass that form a sphere around the bulb. In the daytime, when the bulb is off, the lenses catch the sunlight and glisten creating subtle glows of green and blue, much the way an expensive diamond shimmers. At night, these same lenses refract the light, shooting a beam out to sea a whopping 28 nautical miles. Art points at the second deck of the boat. “Look there’s a hot tub on the boat,” he said. “Can you imagine?” Then he points down to the coast below at a translucent turquoise section of water just to the left of the jetty. “Look there, at that patch of coral,” he said. “A lot of times you can see a few sharks swimming back and forth by that reef.” There were no sharks that day, but the water was majestic. Before we had made our way to the top, I had asked Art what he liked about tending the lighthouse so much. He has been doing it on a volunteer basis for 19 years as a part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and preservation society. He responded, “When we get to the top, you’ll know.” He was right. After trudging up the 175 spiral steps and stepping out on the ledge, I knew. The salty sea air refreshes your skin. You can feel the sunshine warm your face. The ocean stretches out for miles in front of you and the birds eye view of Lighthouse Point and Hillsboro Mile makes the world feel smaller. The breeze rustles nearby palm trees and birds chirp. I felt above the world, on the edge of the earth. The lighthouse is an oasis. “On a hot, 95-degree summer day when the city is

tacked up a chart with mathematical equations showing the stability of the lighthouse under various wind speeds. At one point, Art tells me, the lighthouse survived a category five hurricane that literally tore the homes along the coast right off their foundations. The lighthouse stood up to the force of nature even better than calculations projected. Its survival, Art said, makes the lighthouse the oldest functional structure in all of Broward County. When the lighthouse was built in 1906 (from castings made in Detroit Michigan and lenses made in France) it was the only structure for miles. The area was completely barren. In 1901, the coast guard had determined there wasn’t enough navigational light between Jupiter and the Florida Lighthouse in Biscayne Bay, so they chose to build the lighthouse on an empty patch of land in between the two. In 1903, they appropriated the money, and in 1906, the lighthouse was constructed. A few cabins were built around the base for the lighthouse keepers, but other than that, the area was a no-man’s land. Now, there are still cabins around the base of the lighthouse, which currently serve as a peaceful getaway for military families who want to visit the base and enjoy the Florida coast. Since it was built, the lighthouse has changed hands many times, coming under numerous administrations in the US government: First, the lighthouse came under the department of revenue, so that the lighthouse could be used to catch ships that were smuggling things without paying import duties; second, in 1910, it came under the commerce department, helping the merchant marine ships travel back and forth. From 1910 until 1939, the

lighthouse became the Coast Guard’s responsibility, its function to help save lives through navigation. Then it came under the department of defense, the department of transportation and now department of homeland security. The functional necessity of the lighthouse is currently debatable. Art says that with the advance in GPS technology, there really isn’t a navigational need for the light. However, Art would argue there is absolutely still value in the lighthouse. “I’m a captain. I love lighthouses. Not because I love lighthouses and their structure, but because I love to see that light in the middle of the night when I am in the middle of the ocean and there is absolutely nothing. Everything is black,” Art explains. “You see that tiny light and the beam. It reminds me. It makes me feel more relaxed, more confident, and I know that’s home. I just look at it and keep going to it. You know, don’t forget that a lighthouse is the symbol and icon of hope. That’s what the lighthouse means. That’s the value of it.”

Florida’s Department of Education is expanding an inquiry into how schools classify students who leave without graduating, in response to a ProPublica report that the state may have thousands more dropouts than it acknowledges. Also in reaction to the ProPublica article, the school board chairman in Orlando is asking the district superintendent for a formal report regarding concerns that low-achieving students have been pressured to transfer from traditional to alternative high schools. It’s “one allegation we take very, very seriously,” chairman Bill Sublette said. “If that’s going on, that’s intolerable. ... That cannot happen.” Fifteen students at schools run by for-profit Accelerated Learning Solutions (ALS) in Orlando’s district said that, because of their academic performance, they had been denied admission to regular public high schools or told they had to transfer from them to alternative programs, according to our Feb. 21 article, which was co-published by USA Today. Some were pulled from class for surprise assemblies where ALS

wrote in an email. The state board of education will consider the matter at its March 22 meeting. Linda Stewart, a Democratic state senator representing part of Orlando, expressed dismay in a recent interview about the apparent underreporting of dropouts. “This little play of numbers, it needs to be stopped,” Stewart said. “They need to play by the same rule book that everybody else plays by.” She said she would ask the state Department of Education to look into the questions concerning data collection and see if lawmakers could help with a “corrective measure.” Last month, when ProPublica asked Orange County officials about traditional schools pressuring low-achieving students to transfer to alternative schools against their wishes, they denied it was happening. Once the article was published, though, people stepped forward to say the issue had been simmering within the district for years. At the school board meeting last week, and in comments to ProPublica afterwards, board member Christine Moore said a “handful” of Hispanic parents had

Several traditional schools improved their graduation rates by dispatching students unlikely to earn diplomas on time to ALS schools, the article reported. Enrollment in alternative schools in Orlando’s district, Orange County, has tripled in recent years, swelling to 3,900 in 2014. District officials say transfers for academic reasons are voluntary. ProPublica also found that these alternative schools could be significantly undercounting dropouts by coding students who leave as withdrawing to enter adult education, such as GED classes. State rules don’t label withdrawals for adult education as dropping out. ALS ran seven of the 10 high schools statewide with the most withdrawals to adult education in 2015, including the top five. Company officials couldn’t say where these students actually went — or if they took any GED classes. If all such withdrawals from ALS schools in Florida were counted as dropouts, the number of times that students quit statewide in 2015 would increase by at least 5 percent. Last week, Orange County’s school board voted unanimously to renew its contract with one ALS school, Sunshine High, which had the most withdrawals for adult education in the state in 2015. The state education department, which was already reviewing graduation-rate data, will broaden its examination in light of ProPublica’s findings, a department spokeswoman

complained a couple of years ago about pressure to transfer to alternative schools run by a for-profit company. Moore said she had ALS “investigated,” and told district staff to speak with personnel at traditional high schools to make sure they were not pressuring students to transfer. She said she would like to see a checklist developed for such counseling sessions, to make sure families understand all of their options. “My only concern is to make sure the parents and the students are counseled with all of the options and that they are given the choice,” Moore said. Moore said that the investigation she spurred had corrected the problems. “There were systems put in place to be sure that every child had the opportunity to go into the setting that best met their needs,” she said. “And so to me, this has already been answered and addressed and it had been taken care of.” A former middle school math teacher, Eric Schwalbach, said that former students of his who were struggling in high school told him they were encouraged to attend the charters. At the board meeting, he offered to provide the students’ names and suggested that members “go to Sunshine personally and say ‘Hey, how did you end up here? Did somebody encourage you to leave?’” He showed ProPublica copies of emails he sent to several school board members, Superintendent Barbara Jenkins and Florida Education Commissioner Pam Stewart last year that


accused Orange County schools of improving their state ratings by exiling low achievers to alternative schools. “We can no longer just move 2000 (sic) kids that OCPS failed to meet their needs out of our low income high schools to subpar charter schools ...,” he wrote in a May 20, 2016, email to Jenkins, “to make our school grades look better on paper.” And in a blog post last June that was emailed around last week, Matthew Fitzpatrick — a former district high school assistant principal — outlined how regular district schools could be improving test scores by pushing low achievers towards alternative schools like those ALS runs. “Now, understand, many students are not finding success in traditional high schools, and they need a change of venue,” Fitzpatrick’s blog post said, “but we shouldn’t brag about the great success and progress we are making if all we did was get rid of our lowest students.” Sublette, the board chairman, said he initially asked Jenkins to investigate students’ claims in the ProPublica article that school staff pressured them to leave. Jenkins responded that she had already investigated the concerns, Sublette said, and found them without merit. Still, he said, he asked Jenkins to detail at the next school board meeting what steps she took.

Orange County parents also expressed concerns about the alternative schools at the board meeting. “Children who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting need more help, not less,” said one, Heather Mellet. “The answer is not to push these high-risk children further into the shadows.” Mellet also asked Moore and a second board member, Pam Gould, to recuse themselves from the vote because they had accepted campaign donations from ALS. Moore has received $1,250 in contributions from ALS, its lobbying firm, and a lawyer who works for the firm. She said the donations didn’t influence her vote. “You go to a fundraiser and the lobbyist hands you checks,” she said. “We get contributions from lots of people.”

Gould has received $2,000 from the same sources. Gould said the contributions were transparent and did not constitute a conflict of interest under Florida law. The school board’s attorney said at the meeting that neither member needed to recuse herself. Sublette defended the quality of the ALS schools. “I’m proud of these schools and I’m not even hesitant about renewing this charter” with Sunshine, he said. District personnel have said that shifting students to alternative charter schools doesn’t burnish the district’s overall numbers. Students who leave without diplomas count against the district’s graduation rate, even if they aren’t considered dropouts. The district’s overall graduation rate was 81.3 percent in 2016. But that’s not the number district leaders use when boasting of Orange County’s academic prowess: Instead, they often prefer the higher graduation rate for traditional schools — which excludes charters like the ALS schools. Sublette and Jenkins touted that rate in last year’s state of the schools address, which is typically aimed at the business community as well as the general public. “[T]he accomplishment we’re proudest of, and the one our community, our teachers, our parents and our hard working students deserve all the credit for, is our graduation rate,” Sublette said during the May presentation. “Over the past 15 years the graduation rate at our 19 traditional high schools has risen from 49 percent to 90 percent today!” When Jenkins recently filmed a short video as one of four finalists to become the national Superintendent of the Year, she, too, cited only the traditional schools’ rate: “The graduation rate among our traditional high schools is at an all-time high, at 89.6 percent,” said Jenkins, who was named Florida’s superintendent of the year last November. Company representatives did not speak at the board meeting. “We are grateful for the School Boards support and recognition of our work and successes and remain committed to providing the highest quality of programming,” ALS President Angela Whitford-Narine said in an email. At the request of Sunshine’s principal, one graduate, Charles Jackson, addressed the school board. Jackson’s comments suggested that, as with the students in the ProPublica article, his departure from a traditional high school may not have been entirely voluntary. “It was the last chance for me,” he said. “I got moved on to this school, I got moved on to the next school, but I had to look within myself and have the support of special teachers and my mother and my family.” Jackson added that he felt welcome at Sunshine. “Just because my regular school didn’t want me,” he said, “Sunshine took me in.”

Checkers Old Munchen. GERMAN Sprechen sie Deutsch? You don’t find many authentic German restaurants around town. So when you’re looking for a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel—it’s divine—a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed—throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers— which, of course, is a great sign. Shipwrecked of Reason Half a Century in Cuban Art The arts are what define a city’s identity; they give it that unique flavor. With the opening of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center on the horizon, Pompano Beach is about to embark on a journey to become a cultural arts destination. The venue itself is poised to serve as a beacon that will amplify the vibrancy of the city’s arts community. Innovative programing set forth by Cultural Arts Creatives (a dynamic creative team) will provide a rich diversity of theater, dance, musical performances and visual art exhibits. To kick-start the first season, the cultural center will showcase the world premiere exhibit “Shipwrecked of Reason: Half a Century in Cuban Art.” The exhibit is an impressive collection of 20 Cuban artists representing pivotal moments over the last 50 years of Cuba’s evolution. On loan from the Cuban government, this exhibit is curated by the internationallyrenowned Isabel María Pérez Pérez, and is presented in partnership with the Latin American Art Pavilion (LAAP). Pérez Pérez is the Director of Artecubano Editions and is at the forefront of the contemporary Cuban art movement. She has been involved in numerous important projects, including the mega-exhibit Zona Franca (Free Zone), one of the collateral exhibitions of the 2015 edition of the Havana Biennial. Acclaimed as a global artistic force, curating exhibits worldwide, her views on contemporary Cuban art are revered in the artistic community and among collectors. Deerfield Beach!

Devoid of art supplies, internet or a connection to the international art market for many years, contemporary Cuban artists have been making some of the most innovative work the world has yet to see. The artists featured in Shipwrecked are acclaimed internationally for their far-reaching influence. Each has, in some way, shaped the contemporary art scene in Cuba over the past 50 years. Pérez Pérez has beautifully incorporated each of the artists’ visions to present a condensed, multi-generational mapping of pivotal moments over the plastic evolution of the island. Each artist has diverse artistic

talents and perspectives. The collection deals specifically with themes such as memory, identity, body and portrait, territory and landscape, and the construction of history. The collective dynamics of these artists and their work epitomize the idea of change. The collection will reveal the development of a distinct national identity and will serve as an illustrated narrative of Cuba’s colorful past and present. The collective works on display, which include painting, sculpture, crafts and mixed-media works, establish the artists as generators of senses, experiences and trends. Artist Highlights

MARIA NAPOLES Maria A. Napoles is a Miami entrepreneur who has devoted her life to the arts. She was born in Cuba and left her family behind during the historical Peter Pan Flight era. Maria lived in Puerto Rico for 10 years and was part of the Executive Management Team at Volkswagen of Americas before moving to Miami in 1972. In 2008, Napoles launched Maria’s Enterprises of South Florida with a vision of offering emerging and established artists a platform to exhibit their artwork in a national and international forum. Napoles recognizes the need for emerging artists to be promoted, showcased and exhibited in major events. Napoles currently serves as an Honorary Member of Miami’s Arts & Entertainment Council for the City of Miami appointed by the Mayor. 2013 marks Napoles inaugural launch of both the Latin American Art Pavilion and the Maria’s Art Momentum Gallery at the Red Dot Art Fair during Art Basel Miami Beach. Her handpicked artists and art galleries represent a slice of Latin America’s greatest artists, as well as artists from around the world.

MANUEL MENDIVE Manuel Mendive (born 1944) is one of the leading Afro-Cuban artists to emerge from the revolutionary period. He is considered by many to be the most important Cuban artist living today. He has received numerous awards for his art within exhibitions in Cuba and Europe. Since the beginning of his artistic career, Mendive has participated in many group and solo art exhibits. His first one-man show was held at the Center of Art in Havana in 1964. In 1968, he was awarded with the Adam Montparnasse prize for his painting exhibit at the Salon de Mai in Paris, and third prize at the Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Havana. Additional noteworthy awards include the Alejo Carpentier Medal from the Consejo de Estado of the Republic of Cuba (1988) and the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the Minister of Culture and Francophony of the French Republic (1994). Today, his art resides in museums and galleries all over the world including Cuba, Russia, Somalia, Benin, Congo, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Jamaica and the United States. SANDRA RAMOS Ramos (born 1969) is a visual artist from Cuba known for her surrealist expression of her relationship to Cuba’s political and social situation. Ramos was born in Havana, Cuba where she still continues to live and work. Although Ramos doesn’t come from a family of artists, she was nonetheless still heavily inspired by painter Gloria González who was a close friend of Ramos’ grandmother. At age twelve, the young artist began to study art in Havana’s Escuela Elemental de Artes Plásticas. She continued her studies at the prestigious San Alejandro Art Academy and the Superior Institute of Art in Havana where she was instructed by notable artists such as José Bedia, Leandro Soto and Carlos Cárdenas, among others.

ROBERTO FABELO Roberto Fabelo is a widely known Cuban painter, illustrator and sculptor, and one of the most revered contemporary artists from Cuba. He is perhaps best known for his captivating artworks that depict nude women with bird-like features, such as beaks and wings. However, Fabelo’s most recent, and even more impressive, body of work consists mostly of drawings, watercolor art, oils and installations that show the artist’s peculiar interest in the human condition. These works often depict distorted human and animal figures in portraits and fantastic scenery. The magical pieces explore the human psyche and its persistent struggle between good and evil. Fabelo has been awarded with numerous national and international awards. His art has been shown in more than 40 solo, and 500 group, shows worldwide, including some in Switzerland, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

NADAL ANTELMO (NADALITO) NADALITO, a professional photographer, was born in Cárdenas, Cuba in 1968. He is a renowned artist whose work has been recognized nationally and internationally. He has participated in many projects which have both collectively and individually earned numerous awards. His work is in the tradition of photography and the experimental Cuban art. His art is thought provoking, brings attention to society and highlights social injustice. OTHER ARTISTS IN THE EXHIBIT INCLUDE: Iván Capote, Ibrahim Miranda, Liudmila& Nelson (Nelson Ramírez de Arellano y Liudmila Velasco), Abel Barroso, Aimée García, René Peña, Humberto Díaz, Michel Mirabal, Eduardo Roca Salazar / Choco, Lázaro Saavedra, Rigoberto Mena, Pedro Pablo Oliva, Meira & Toirac (Meira Marrero y José Ángel Toirac), Mabel Poblet and Arianna Contino.


Pérez Pérez’s message through the collection is clear and concise. “Cuban artists are creating some of the most exhilarating and pioneering contemporary art in the world. They are a powerhouse sought after by many collectors and prominent museums. We are truly honored to present a world premiere showcasing artists of this stature at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, an amazing, state-of-the-art facility.” Maria Napoles, the founder of LAAP and an honorary member of the City of Miami Arts and Entertainment The art pictured may not be a part of the exhibit

Council appointed by the mayor, agreed that the cultural significance of Shipwrecked is profound. “The visual arts have long been one of the strongest parts of Cuba’s amazing cultural output. Cuban art is an exceptionally diverse cultural blend of African, South American, European and North American elements, reflecting the diverse demographic makeup of the island,” she said. “We are truly elated to have guest curator Pérez Pérez as part of this exhibit.
