Shake It Up BY SUSAN ROSSER
E
very so often, I come across an article worth saving for later. A few years ago, I stumbled upon a piece about a New Jersey high school that requires first-year students to hike along a 50-mile section of the Appalachian Trail at the end of the academic year. The headline caught my eye because, as a parent and just a plain old citizen, I think teaching, motivating, and inspiring youth is tantamount to a thriving society. But I suppose I am not alone — that’s pretty much the idea behind public education. A 50-mile hike is undeniably unconventional in the realm of high school education. Without delving into the details of the article, one can imagine the valuable lessons such a trek imparts. First and foremost, it must foster a sense of adventure and camaraderie. I could elaborate on the hike’s benefits, detailing what each student learned and how they bonded, but that ground has already been covered. The creative thinking of the educators who conceived this idea is what really caught my attention and got me thinking. I admire these teachers for thinking outside the box and injecting a bit of excitement into the school year. My school days are long gone, so the article led me to consider my professional world. Workplaces could benefit from a similar shake-up. Encouraging employees to step outside their comfort zones, explore new perspectives, and collaborate in unconventional ways might lead to innovative breakthroughs. The idea behind orchestrating this 50-mile hike by educators became a metaphor for me. I found inspiration in the creative thinking of these teachers, who ventured beyond traditional approaches. It prompted me to question established norms in my own life and motivated me to embrace a more open mindset.

It’s easy to stick to the same old routines, following the path of least resistance. And as a risk-averse person, that is the path I often choose. However, acknowledging that tried-and-true methods might not be the optimal way forward is half the battle. Unfortunately, when we change things up, we usually take a few swings and misses before we hit a grand slam. But the fear of failure shouldn’t stop us from looking for our pitch. As I examined at some of the challenges in my own life I am proud to say I asked myself a whole bunch of questions. What could I change? How can I be a better mother, wife, and friend? How can I enhance my productivity at work or improve my business? What should I start doing? What should I stop doing? To tell the truth, I have made several choices in the past year that I might not have made before my 50-mile-hike-epiphany. As we navigate life’s journey, both personally and professionally, let’s not shy away from the occasional detour or uncharted path. These deviations, whether minor adjustments or monumental shifts, can lead to a dynamic and fulfilling life where the end goal is not just success but a continuous evolution. The City of Deerfield Beach Has Launched a Pilot Compost Program One hundred houses and five businesses are now taking part in a pilot compost program in the City of Deerfield Beach through March 2025. The USDA-funded community organic and food waste recycling and compost pilot program is designed to test strategies for the potential future implementation of a larger-scale compost program. Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such as leaves and food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil and plants. The practice has been shown to provide a range of environmental benefits including improved soil health and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. landfills and trash incinerators receive 167 million tons of garbage, nearly a quarter of which is food scraps. When food scraps in the landfill decompose, they produce methane, a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 84 times more potent than CO2. Food waste in landfills is the third largest driver of methane in the nation and the world. Alternatively, when food waste is converted into compost and applied to the land, it sequesters carbon, provides a soil amendment that helps prevent erosion and

flooding, and supports growing healthy food. The City of Deerfield Beach says the organic matter collected during its new pilot program will be processed into compost and redistributed in the community through events and partnerships with local community gardens. To implement the program, the City has partnered with three different organizations. Filthy Organics is a service-disabled, veteran-owned, startup compost manufacturer and subscription-based curbside food scraps pickup service. Organics Recycling Foundation (ORF) is a 510c3 non-profit environmental corporation that promotes research and education around organic waste recycling. FLIPANY, a leader in educational programming and initiatives surrounding food, nutrition and agriculture in South Florida, will provide the educational programming aspect of the pilot program throughout Deerfield Beach. Applications for both residential and commercial businesses to participate in the pilot compost program are still live online at deerfield-beach.com/1871/composting. Reviving the Jewel DEERFIELD BEACH’S PIER GETS A MAKEOVER POST-HURRICANE HAVOC! PHOTOS BY JEFF GRAVES
T
he International Fishing Pier draws in fishermen and sightseers from around the globe, contributing to Deerfield’s globally recognized live camera feed. Regrettably, the pier suffered damage from a storm surge during Hurricane Nicole on November 9, 2022. As reported by the Sun Sentinel, the pier has remained partially closed since the storm struck. Following the incident, the City conducted a structural assessment of the pier, leading to several recommendations for enhancements. This project is a cornerstone attraction on the Deerfield’s beachfront, poised to benefit the surrounding community significantly. Moreover, it aligns with the City’s commitment to advancing infrastructure, facilities, and organizational capacity for a sustainable community. According to City spokesman David Hunt, as quoted in the Sun Sentinel, the project is budgeted at $4.5 million. To gather input from residents, the City initiated an online survey regarding the pier, seeking residents’ opinions on various improvement options.

hood place serving classic Italian fare. The shrimp tempura appetizer, while not classically Italian, was light, crispy and a great starter to share. We were suitably impressed with the flavor bomb that is the veal chop valdostano. The grilled salmon was delicate and fresh and prepared with garlic, fresh herbs and a touch of lemon. this popular new eatery is a welcome addition to Pompano Beach. The menu features a raw bar and many small plates that are optimal for sharing. We tried four different kinds of oysters, which were all fresh and perfectly briny, with a considerable difference in size. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable about the menu and raw bar offerings. We also shared a few small plates, including a raw salmon dish, stuffed pepper dews and pork rillettes.
