HERE’S A QUICK GUIDE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT QUALIFICATIONS WE HAVE, AND WHAT TO THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU ARE CHOOSING YOUR COURSES.
We offer a range of study programmes including Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. These include A Levels, vocational qualifications and T Levels. We also have a great range of foundation courses available, all designed to help you progress to the next level.
Our admissions team can give you advice based on your career plans, interests, and predicted GCSE results. We recommend visiting us at one of our open events to learn more about our courses and college life.
A Levels are Level 3 qualifications and are the ideal choice if you want to study more than one subject, as you can normally pick three subjects.
• Academic focus - more theoretical and written work
• Predominantly exam based
• Usually examined at the end of your second year of study
• Three subjects can be studied
• Often required by selective universities such as Oxbridge.
They are studied across two years and are graded A*-E, with your grades being determined by your final exam results at the end of your second year.
These newer technical qualifications have been developed with employability in mind – helping you to build the skills industry needs. You’ll receive split learning, spending roughly 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on an industry placement.
• 2 year technical programme
• Mixture of classroom learning and on the job experience
• Equivalent to 3 A Levels
• Recognised by universities and other education providers.
Our vocational courses, which include UAL, City & Guilds and BTEC, are great for students who prefer practical learning – and they are highly respected by employers. They relate to a particular profession, area of work or technical/ applied skill.
• More applied/practical
• Mixed assessment methods
• Usually assessed throughout both years
• One to three subjects studied
• Many require compulsory work experience
• Accepted by many universities.
Vocational courses can be taught at different levels.
Play to your strengths
Think about the subjects you enjoy and do well in, as this will motivate you to succeed.
Explore new options
Don’t forget to explore any courses that weren’t offered at your school.
Choose for you
Your ultimate decision should be one that YOU are happy with.
Give yourself time
Start your research as soon as possible and be sure to attend open events to find out more.

A study programme is your individual learning plan. It is developed with your input, and is based on your qualifications and achievements, what you want and need to do next, and what your future plans are.
Everyone’s study programme will be slightly different, yours will reflect your individual support needs, abilities and ambitions. But every study programme will have the following elements:
• Lessons – most of your study programme will be spent studying your chosen qualifications. If you haven’t achieved the required grades in English and maths you’ll continue to study these too
• Upskill and extended learning - activities to support your progression and develop personal, study and employability skills
• Enrichment – you will select an enrichment option when you enrol with us
• Work experience - all students will undertake work experience during their time at college, look at page 42 to find out more.
At college, you’ll study fewer subjects than you did at school and in a lot more detail. Lessons will range in length from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on your choice of subject and level of study. There are no bells; we expect students to manage their own time. You are free to call your teacher by their first name, and we encourage you to take more responsibility for your own learning to match the increased level of freedom that you have at college.
As part of your study programme, you will have one Upskill session with your progress tutor each week.
These sessions will help you develop the eight skills that are recognised as being key to success in finding a job in the future. Want to be a lawyer, or an architect or maybe even a musician? How are you going to stand out against the crowd?
Upskill will help you do that.
Upskill will cover a wide variety of topics linked to your personal development, but all sessions will link back to those eight key skills you need to reach your potential.
Upskill sessions will:
As a college student, you’ll spend as much time studying outside the classroom as you will inside. At St Vincent we call this extended learning.
You will have timetabled sessions to help you make the best use of your time outside of your taught sessions, and have access to our study facilities and friendly staff who will be on hand to help you achieve your independent learning goals.
• Help you develop your independent study skills
• Cover a range of personal, social, health and economic topics
• Teach you more about the world of work and your progression options.
You will also have regular one-to-one with your progress tutor who will help you break down any barriers you may be facing and work with you on the next steps to take.
Enrichment is something that will enhance your studies, give you confidence and help you achieve your goals.
Enrichment comes in many forms. You might be part of a team or society, take part in specific activities alongside your subjects, or you might want to start your own club. Whether you want to try something creative or more active, there will be something for you. Whatever it is you want to achieve at college, there will be an enrichment option to help you get there. For more information about what’s on offer, turn to page 46.
This course is a ‘single’ you can take two more courses alongside this (two ‘singles’ or a ‘double’).

The Student Council plays a vital role in shaping the student experience at our college. Made up of elected student representatives from across all programmes, the council provides a platform for learners to voice their ideas, raise concerns, and influence decision-making on matters that affect student life. Working closely with college leadership and staff, the council helps to organise events, promote inclusion, and contribute to initiatives that enhance the learning environment.
Students also have the opportunity to stand for Student Executive roles—such as Student President, Vice President, and Equality & Diversity Lead—offering a chance to lead the council and represent the entire student body at a strategic level. These prestigious roles come with real responsibility and the chance to make a lasting impact, while developing high-level skills in leadership, public speaking, and advocacy. Participation in the Student Council not only empowers students to make a difference but also prepares them for active citizenship and future professional success.
We are always looking for students to represent the college at events such as open evenings, taster days and visits to local schools. Each ambassador receives training and can put these new skills into practice throughout the year. Being an ambassador really helps to build your confidence, particularly when it comes to public speaking, and looks great on your UCAS application and CV.
If you are interested in something that isn’t on our enrichment list, please let us know. We might be able to help you set up a new club or activity!
Our Student Governors play a key role in representing the voice of the student body at the highest levels of college decision-making. Elected by their peers, they sit on the Governing Body and contribute to discussions that shape the strategic direction of the college. Through this role, Student Governors gain valuable experience in leadership, governance, and advocacy, while developing confidence and communication skills. They act as a vital link between students and senior leaders, ensuring that learner perspectives are heard and considered in shaping policies and priorities.
Please contact our learning support team if you want to discuss how we can support you. Tel: 023 9258 8311 | Email: admissions@stvincent.ac.uk
