1 Research
Before you apply, make sure you do some research into the types of courses that are out there, and which ones could be right for you. Look through college prospectuses, course information on the website, and attend open events to work out the best route for you after school.
2 Apply online
Applications open on Thursday 5 September. Visit our website www.stvincent.ac.uk and click the apply now button. You can add your selected courses to the ‘shopping basket’ before completing each step of the application form. Once you’ve completed each step, submit your application to us. We’ll let you know when we’ve safely received it with an acknowledgement email.
3 College interview
Before offering you a place at college, we’ll invite you in to discuss your courses. This will usually take place within a few weeks of making your application.
4 Receiving an offer
Offers will be sent to you via the email address you have provided and by post. The offer will be conditional, based on your predicted GCSE grades. All you need to do is email us back to accept your place. (You can accept places at multiple different colleges – just think of it as reserving your place!)

We’ll also give you advice and guidance about the best path for your future. You don’t have to come alone. If you’d feel more comfortable bringing someone with you, that’s totally okay.
If you realise a course you’ve applied for isn’t right for you, just let us know. We can talk through your options and help you make the right choice for your future.
The best way to find out about the college is to visit us! Come to one of our open events to meet our teachers, discuss your options, see the college, and even meet some of our students. Find out the dates on the back cover and book your place in advance on our website.

HERE’S A QUICK GUIDE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT QUALIFICATIONS WE HAVE, AND WHAT TO THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU ARE CHOOSING YOUR COURSES.
We offer a range of study programmes including Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. These include A Levels, vocational certificates and diplomas, T Levels, and Access to Higher Education courses. We also have a great range of foundation courses available, all designed to help you progress to the next level.
Our admissions team can give you advice based on your career plans, interests, and predicted GCSE results. We recommend visiting us at one of our open events to learn more about our courses and college life.
A Levels are Level 3 qualifications and are the ideal choice if you want to study more than one subject, as you can normally pick two or three subjects.
• Academic focus - more theoretical and written work
• Predominantly exam based
• Usually examined at the end of your second year of study
• Three subjects can be studied
• Often required by selective universities such as Oxbridge.
They are studied across two years and are graded A*-E, with your grades being determined by your final exam results at the end of your second year.
These newer technical qualifications have been developed with employability in mind – helping you to build the skills industry needs. You’ll receive split learning, spending roughly 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on an industry placement.
• 2 year technical programme
• Mixture of classroom learning and on the job experience
• Equivalent to 3 A Levels
• Recognised by universities and other education providers.
Our vocational courses, which include UAL, City & Guilds and BTEC, are great for students who prefer practical learning – and they are highly respected by employers. They relate to a particular profession, area of work or technical/ applied skill.
• More applied/practical
• Mixed assessment methods
• Usually assessed throughout both years
• One to three subjects studied
• Many require compulsory work experience
• Accepted by many universities.
Vocational courses can be taught at different levels.
We offer two different pathways for students who are 19+. The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which prepares you for study at university. It’s perfect for adult students who have not yet achieved a level 3 qualification and would like to apply for university.

A study programme is your individual learning plan. It is developed with your input, and is based on your qualifications and achievements, what you want and need to do next, and what your future plans are.
Everyone’s study programme will be slightly different, yours will reflect your individual support needs, abilities and ambitions. But every study programme will have the following elements:
• Lessons – most of your study programme will be spent studying your chosen qualifications. If you haven’t achieved the required grades in English and maths you’ll continue to study these too
• Upskill and extended learning - activities to support your progression and develop personal, study and employability skills
• Enrichment – you will select an enrichment option when you enrol with us
• Work experience - all students will undertake work experience during their time at college, look at page 42 to find out more
• If you access SEND support, this will also form part of your study programme.
At college, you’ll study fewer subjects than you did at school and in a lot more detail.
Lessons will range in length from one hour to three hours depending on your choice of subject and level of study. There are no bells; we expect students to manage their own time. You are free to call your teacher by their first name, and we encourage you to take more responsibility for your own learning to match the increased level of freedom that you have at college.
As a college student, you’ll spend as much time studying outside the classroom as you will inside. At St Vincent we call this extended learning.
You will have timetabled sessions to help you make the best use of your time outside of your taught sessions, and have access to our study facilities and friendly staff who will be on hand to help you achieve your independent learning goals.
As part of your study programme, you will have one Upskill session with your progress tutor each week.
These sessions will help you develop the eight skills that are recognised as being key to success in finding a job in the future. Want to be a lawyer, or an architect or maybe even a musician? How are you going to stand out against the crowd? Upskill will help you do that.
Upskill will cover a wide variety of topics linked to your personal development, but all sessions will link back to those eight key skills you need to reach your potential.
Upskill sessions will:
• Help you develop your independent study skills
• Cover a range of personal, social, health and economic topics
• Teach you more about the world of work and your progression options.
You will also have regular 1-to-1s with your progress tutor who will help you break down any barriers you may be facing and work with you on the next steps to take.
Enrichment is something that will enhance your studies, give you confidence and help you achieve your goals.
Enrichment comes in many forms. You might be part of a team or society, take part in specific activities alongside your subjects, or you might want to start your own club. Whether you want to try something creative or more active, there will be something for you. Whatever it is you want to achieve at college, there will be an enrichment option to help you get there. For more information about what’s on offer, turn to page 46.

ALWAYS
Our careers team offer impartial careers information, advice and guidance through one-to-one sessions, workshops, tutor sessions, progression days and many other events. It is important you have the chance to explore the many options available.
Work experience is an important part of your study programme and college experience, and all students are required to complete some during their time at college. Placements will give you a great insight into the type of career you might be interested in and help you develop the skills needed for employment.
Work experience is also imperative for some higher education courses. If you are looking to study medicine, health and social care related courses or veterinary science, university admissions staff will look closely to see whether you have undertaken any work experience alongside your course. Doing so shows your commitment and dedication to the subject you are interested in, but also develops those soft skills that you might not get to use during your lessons.
There is dedicated time allocated for students to take part in work experience. We encourage students to find their own placements, but support is also available through the careers team.
We can help students secure apprenticeships, by assisting with applications, any tests that applicants must undertake, as well as practice interviews and help with presentation skills. Students have been offered places at prestigious companies such as IBM, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, Arqiva and Fiander Tovell.
There are many aspects linked to employability and we will offer you a menu of activities to make you more employable, whether this is to help you secure part-time work, a work experience placement or getting that dream apprenticeship. We run a variety of workshops and events on the following topics:
• CV writing
• Application writing
• Cover letter writing
• Job seeking guidance
• Interview techniques
• Mock interviews.
Many of our students will progress on to university after college. We work closely with local universities (including Southampton, Solent, Winchester, Bournemouth and Portsmouth), as well as the Southern Universities Network project, to help our students from all walks of life achieve their goals. Students begin their UCAS application in the summer term of their first year to meet the January deadline. Help with university applications is available throughout the year and we have an excellent record for supporting student progression to highly selective universities.
For those on a foundation programme we hold progression days for students to explore the options available to them.
