2025 Lighthouse Theatre Season

Page 1

Welcome

Sitting here at my desk, I can see the bustle of the Liebig and Timor St roundabout. If I walk out the door for three minutes, I’ll be greeted by the magnificent coastline from Cannon Hill. I’ve thought of a few ways to start this letter to you – I could say “Lighthouse Theatre is the flagship performing arts centre of the Great Southwest Coast”. I could say “it’s a vital cultural icon presenting world class entertainment” or “it’s a hub for community ingenuity and engagement” but you already know these things. Lighthouse Theatre has been your home of the arts for decades. Now it is mine. I am still delighted daily by the vibrancy of this town and its breathtaking scenery. Thank you for having me, Warrnambool.

Lighthouse Theatre Season 2025 is a bridge between the old and the new. That is true in the literal sense that part of the season was put together by the Lighthouse’s outgoing manager Xavier Dannock, to whom I owe the deepest of thanks, and part of it I brought in myself. It is also true as a description of the works themselves. From perennial classics like Bell Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to the vibrant voices of Task York’s Happy Hour and AUNTY by Beat Entertainment. From stalwarts of the library shelves such as IMAGINE Velveteen Rabbit and George Orwell’s 1984 to The Librarian, a hilarious family circus show about libraries themselves. From stories told by our world’s oldest culture, represented by beautiful First Nations shows Saltbush and MEERTA, to the stunning piece of contemporary performance that is PRISM by Warrnambool’s own Find Your Voice Collective. Sculpted with care to delight and entertain, Lighthouse Theatre Season 2025 has something for everyone.

See you at the theatre!

Saltbush

Tuesday 25 & Thursday 27 March 2025 – 6.30pm

Lighthouse Theatre

60 minutes, no interval

Saltbush centres on the journey of two friends and their spiritual guide on foot as they cross Australian landscapes – river country, an urban landscape, desert and the sea. The journey is one of discovering the land, growing an understanding and acknowledging how it challenges or provokes personal journeys.

Saltbush is a plant that can be found throughout Australia in almost all Aboriginal lands, and so it represents a common thread between all the different nations of Australian Indigenous peoples. This shared idea acted as a point of inspiration for the narrative, contemporary painting, dance and instrumental music that were created by the Aboriginal artists in this production. These artistic forms were used as a means of interpreting the natural features of the landscape in an Indigenous mythological context.

Through its sensor and infrared cameras, Saltbush allows the children to interact, play and perform in the production and provides an immersive experience of the artwork. This also provides a unique experience for parents and teachers as they watch the children become involved.

“Chloe Matharu has a voice with the purity of a folk classic.”

Monkey Baa Theatre Company Josephine Wants To Dance

Based on the book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley

Adapted for the stage by Eva Di Cesare, Sandie Eldridge and Tim McGarry

Wednesday 23 April 2025 – 6.30pm Lighthouse Theatre 50 minutes, no interval

She’s bold. She’s bouncy. She’s back!

A hilarious musical about the importance of believing in yourself and realising your dreams and... a dancing kangaroo!

Josephine is a kangaroo who loves to dance. Her little brother, Joey, tells her kangaroos don’t dance, they hop - but Josephine continues to point her toes and leap through the air. When a ballet troupe comes to the sleepy town of Shaggy Gully, Josephine desperately wants to dance like the ballerinas in pink tutus and silk ballet shoes.

On the day of the first performance the Ballet Company is in trouble. The prima ballerina twists her ankle and the understudy has a splinter in her toe. Who can dance the lead role? Josephine’s talents are called upon to help save the day. Can she do it, and more importantly, does it matter that she’s a kangaroo?

Ukulele Death Squad

Friday 6 June 2025- 8pm

Lighthouse Studio 55 minutes, no interval

In a world where there are at least two ukulele orchestras, this slimmer eightpiece extravaganza from the Australian badlands declares themselves to be the planet’s “most dangerous ukulele band.”

Their name more than hints at the level of menace & peril contained within. Luckily for you, they are largely armed with several examples of the miniature, titular instrument along with their epic vocal performance, pulsing conga-led rhythms, and of course, their big, bold brass battalion ready for combat. The death squad wields their instruments like master marksmen, hitting their target every time using their arsenal of gypsy jazz, R&B, and folk. There is a strong sense of showmanship, theatricality, and raucous energy in their live shows that has gained international recognition and critical acclaim at The Adelaide & Edinburgh Fringe, WOMAD (Adelaide), WOMAD (UK), Boomtown (UK), Dranouter Festival (Belgium) and Roudolstadt (Germany) to name only a few.

They swing, they soar, they shoot from the hip. Indeed, if Quentin Tarantino ever needed a band to play during a high-body-count shoot-out in a Mexican cantina, Ukulele Death Squad should be his first and only port of call.

Winston Smith, an editor at the Ministry of Truth, sits quietly. A quick swig of gin, a glance of quiet optimism toward the telescreen. Winston opens his diary, puts pen to paper, and in doing so, commits the essential crime that contains all others in itself. A radical and unprecedented act of rebellion.

Discovered, entrapped, and incarcerated in the Ministry of Love, Winston, in defending his burning desire for personal freedom, prepares for the fight of his life. Can the oppressive forces of The Party, led by BIG BROTHER, obliterate the indomitable human spirit?

The Librarian

Wednesday 17 September 2025 – 6:30pm

Lighthouse Theatre

1 hr, no interval

At first glance, Paul-Émile Dumoulin seems like just a regular librarian. He is serious, proud and very orderly. Every book is in its place on his impeccable shelves. The only problem? As soon as Paul-Émile gets his nose in a book, reality disappears, giving way to the slightly crazy worlds he discovers between the pages. On his adventures, the very sensible librarian metamorphoses. He suddenly turns into strange and silly characters who perform acrobatics, balancing, juggling, breakdancing and beatboxing. Just how far will reading take him?

This show blends clowning, physical theatre and the circus arts. It invites young audiences to discover the passion of reading and the power of the imagination, which whisks readers away to faraway lands, on an adventure, or into a romance or thriller.
