Natasha Celebrates The Triple Distinction Star Award

Natasha Everson-Williams is celebrating top marks with a well-deserved Triple Distinction Star (D*D*D*) in photography BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Trafford College – the equivalent to 3 A levels.

Already on her way to having a successful photography career, with her work published in Lancashire Life, Manchester Evening News, Manchester Confidential, The Herald and of course Southside Community magazine and Lift Off! Business magazine to name but a few. Her recent work was also chosen to be exhibited in Altrincham’s “Art With a Heart” exhibition.

It is not surprising then to discover that photography is Natasha’s life. Her love of both location and studio shoots is evident and puts her in a unique position to present an extensive range of interesting photography compositions and focus on creative projects.

Natasha explains: “Through my photography I’m able to capture the real human experience and I feel inspired by the diversity of the community.

“I enjoy capturing people’s lives, their place and circumstances through the lens. If I take a job or assignment on I’m totally

Wythenshawe Off Roaders, a project organised in partnership with Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) and other local organisations, to enable girls and boys in Wythenshawe to learn how to ride safely. It’s run by a steering group, volunteers and young people, ensuring the courses achieve what the youngsters want.

Set up in 2016 after complaints from the community about motorbikes racing around the streets, research showed that residents were concerned about young people being injured and sometimes killed on motorbikes together with the associated noise and antisocial behaviour.

Wythenshawe Off Roaders offers young people with an interest in motorbikes the opportunity to get together, learn how to ride safely, the correct clothing to protect themselves, help save lives, how to give first aid to anyone who has been involved in a bike accident and help for those who want to get their CBT (Compulsory Basic Training).

Ben, said: “Being a part of the Wythenshawe off roaders opened my eyes, I realised the effect off road bikes have on the community but also that there is a better way to enjoy riding bikes.”

It’s not all hard work, the aim is to educate and create a community of bikers who want to have a good time, make friends and ride safely.

Wythenshawe Off Roaders won the Most Effective Youth Group award at the Manchester Buzz Awards 2017, organised by Manchester City Council.

Curtis Berry, one of the organisers, said: “During the four week course the young people are taken on an off road experience. Last year the group were invited to the Motocross track, Jawbone Quarry in West Yorkshire, where they watched in awe as motocross champions showed them how to ride. Future events are being planned to include track days, go karting, and speedway.

“Wythenshawe Off Roaders aims to help young people and their families who are interested in riding bikes, offering advice on buying machines, protective clothing, and training. In the future we also hope to be able to provide clothing and bikes at the centre to people who do not have their own, making the group accessible to everyone.”

To do this they will need support, sponsorship and funding from organisations. They are also looking for local volunteers with biking

Free cycle training for all the family Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has launched a new cycle training scheme designed to get whole families out and about on two wheels. The free, two-hour sessions will be led by a professional instructor, who will travel to the family’s home and tailor each session to suit their needs.

Parents will be taught how to lead safe cycling trips on the road, how to ride protectively with children, and children will be taught how they can travel safely on the roads to ensure that everyone is comfortable riding with traffic.

TfGM has been running cycle training for adults across the region for several years, with more than 10,000 training sessions helping more people to jump on their bikes more of the time.

Greater Manchester Cycling and Walking Commissioner Chris Boardman is keen for as many people as possible – including families – to see cycling as a safe, convenient and easy way to travel.

In June, he launched an innovative proposal to create a city-region-wide cycling and walking network made up of more than 1,000 miles of routes, with 75 miles of segregated bike lanes, and sees the family training sessions as one of the ways to get parents and kids ready for cycling on the road together.

“The Greater Manchester cycling and walking network will make local trips on foot or by bike much more attractive, easy and convenient for families and everyone else,” he said. “In particular, we want to see far more school runs happening without cars.

“Until then, we need to give families more confidence to be able to venture out on their bikes.

I hope families across the region take advantage of these tailored sessions.”

WCHG win ‘Young Tenant of the Year’ at TPAS Awards18 Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) Youth Panel member Shannon Stone was crowned as the national winner in the prestigious ‘Young Tenant ‘of the year category at the 2018 Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) awards.

After winning the Northern Regional final earlier in the year, Shannon was competing against young tenants from all over the UK at the event.

TPAS is the marker leader in the UK for Resident Involvement who work towards empowering individuals to have real influence over the organisations to which they may pay their rent WCHG Group Chief Executive, Nigel Wilson, said, “I’m delighted that Shannon won this award as it’s a fitting tribute to all the hard work she has put into supporting young people in Wythenshawe and around Manchester.

“She should be very proud at being recognised and setting a very high standard for other housing groups across the country.”

Young Tenant of the Year, Shannon Stone, said, “Thank you to everyone at WCHG for all the amazing opportunities and challenges they’ve given me over the years. I’m very grateful and glad to be a part of your workforce now as well.

“I would also like to thank Chris, Kat and Joe from the Youth Team for all the support they have given me.”

Suzann is Slimming World’s Northenden Woman of the Year 2018!

One super slimmer has been named Northenden’s Slimming World ‘Woman of the Year’ 2018 thanks to their life-changing 8st 11.5lbs weight loss.

Suzann Bramhall, 36, from Wythenshawe has gone from 20st 3.5lbs to 11st 6lbs in just one year and she’s been chosen to represent the Northenden Slimming World group in the nationwide Slimming World Woman of the Year 2018 competition, which aims to find the UK and Ireland’s most inspiring female slimmer.

More than half of all women in the UK and Ireland (58%) are overweight and a quarter of women’s weight is so high it risks impacting on their health by increasing their chances of developing a range of conditions including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements of thousands of women up and down the country who have made long-term healthy lifestyle changes.

Suzann, who has gone from a dress size 24 to a 10, said: "I never could have dreamt that I’d be in this position when I first began my weight loss journey. My health is better, I have more energy, I’m happier and I feel more comfortable in my own skin."

She joined Slimming World in August 2017 after becoming increasingly unhappy with her size. "I have always been bigger than my friends, even when i was little. I tried lots of different to lose weight but they usually left me feeling hungry or miserable – or both, in fact. With Slimming World it’s completely different.

"I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club because they don’t know what to expect. From the first moment I walked into my Slimming World group I felt comfortable, and the support I’ve received has been amazing. I look forward to going each week to catch up with all of my new friends and share tips, recipes and advice. I just love it!"

Suzann lost 9.5lbs in her first week and was blown away that the changes she’d made had such a big impact so quickly. As the weight started to come off, her fitness improved Suzann now feels more confident when riding her horses.

She says: "I feel like a different woman to the one who walked into Slimming World 12 months ago and winning Woman of the Year is a real honour because there are so many amazing women in our group.

Now Suzann will go forward to the regional finals of the competition, putting her in the running for the national title. The national Slimming World Woman of the Year 2018 will be announced in November and the winner will take home a £3,000 (or Euro equivalent) cash prize or a five-day holiday in Mexico.)

Jennie Dootson, who runs Northenden group, says: "I’m so proud of Suzann. She’s a fantastic ambassador for Slimming World and what she’s achieved is nothing short of incredible. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires others to change their lives in the same way."

Heart charity appeals for Wythenshawe residents to join the fight against heart disease The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is calling on the people of Wythenshawe to help accelerate the fight against heart disease by joining their local fundraising group and raising money for lifesaving research.

Around 47,600 people across Manchester are fighting a daily battle with heart and circulatory disease. Each year these devastating conditions claim the lives of more than 960 people in Manchester alone.

The nation’s heart charity is calling on people across Wythenshawe to take heart and join the fight against heart disease by becoming part of their local fundraising group and raising vital funds for heart research. Fundraising groups are the face of the BHF in their local communities. From running fundraising events to supporting schools and local businesses and organising collections, they are a fantastic way to support our vital work.

Any time volunteers give will be invaluable because every pound raised from fundraising groups will help fund vital research and identify new treatments that could help save lives.

Katherine Stybelski BHF Fundraising Manager for Greater Manchester West said: “Heart disease is heartless. Too many lives are lost in Manchester each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect more families from this devastation.

BHF research has helped halve death rates from heart and circulatory disease over the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. Through the public’s generosity the BHF will fund half a billion pounds of new research over the next five years.

The Manchester College creates a buzz with Bee in the City The Manchester College has joined forces with neighbouring Wythenshawe organisations and community groups to bring the Bee in the City art trail to the Wythenshawe Forum.

‘Overgrown’, the Wythenshawe Forum bee, joins over 100 giant bees creating a buzz as they take up new habitats across Manchester until 23 September 2018.

It was officially unveiled by Mike Kane, MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, who has been a supporter of the project.

The project to bring Overgrown to Wythenshawe has been led by local organisations, including The Manchester College, Wythenshawe Forum Trust and Real Food Wythenshawe. In total, 18 local organisations and individuals have supported the project.

Public art specialists Wild in Art helped to create the art trail, with Manchester artists and celebrities such as Liam Gallagher decorating the large sculptures across the city. Children from ten local schools also created their own little Bees, which are also on display inside Wythenshawe Forum.

After reminiscing about the historical links the bee has with Manchester, Mike Kane MP, said: “Art has amazing regenerative effects. I hope that people will wander through and visit because this is a part of the area and the city they live in.”

Karen Wright, Assistant Principal Careers, Employer Partnership and Skills at The Manchester College, said: “The Manchester

College has collaborated with the Wythenshawe Forum Trust to bring the Bee in the City art trail to the Wythenshawe Forum, which gives a real opportunity to share the creativity that makes this area special.”

Jacqueline Naraynsingh, Programme Manager at Real Food Wythenshawe, said: “We really wanted to get a Bee here so that we could be part of that bigger trail.

“Wythenshawe is a garden city that is 34 per cent green space, we were keeping all that in mind when we chose the bee.”

Lizzie Rose Chapman, who was the Manchester artist responsible for painting the Wythenshawe Bee, said: “I wanted to give a sense of exploration and being in the outdoors.”

Wythenshawe Good Neighbours are recruiting older volunteers

Marie Greenhalgh and Samantha Days, Founder and Directors of Wythenshawe Good Neighbours, are working on an exciting new development, recruiting over 60s as "community network volunteers."

The pilot, which will run for 12 months, will identify a postcode area in all of the five wards of Wythenshawe. Initially 10 volunteers will be recruited to work in pairs in their designated postcode area.

Samantha, said: "Many older people use their retirement as an opportunity to do something different, doing things that are useful and socially valuable. We have found that the older volunteer is very committed to helping people in their community.

“Older volunteers can make a huge difference to the lives of other older people who may be lonely or socially isolated. Indeed many older people volunteer because retirement does bring with it moments of loneliness for them and they can make a huge difference not only to their own lives but that of others."

This new scheme will work at a post code level. Community network volunteers will work in pairs to identify older people who may need support with day to day living. Dropping in as a companion, matching neighbours who could support each other, signposting to other later life support in Wythenshawe, such as the community lunches and coffee mornings across the area. Tapping into all the support and resources in Wythenshawe. Helping older residents be more connected to their near neighbourhood, a network volunteer who can feed back any issues to Wythenshawe Good neighbours or other health and social care and community organisations. The community network volunteer will work to identify other older residents to take on the role of a community network volunteer going forward.

Marie, added: "From personal experience I have found that when you retire there is a danger you become very self centred and all that you do is for yourself or family. Volunteering is a way of staying active, healthy and vital in a community.

“The community network volunteer is building on local volunteering developing good neighbourly practices. keeping older residents on our radar who may not be housing group tenants, medical referrals or living in sheltered accommodation. Just as importantly community network volunteers are helping themselves stay fit, healthy, informed and active into their older age and passing on a positive ageing attitude to others.

Training will be delivered by a partner organisation, who will also make the necessary DBS checks, provide ID and outdoor clothing.

Wythenshawe Good Neighbours will line manage the volunteers on their day-to-day volunteering so volunteering in your street or postcode is quite possible.

From a few hours a week to a couple of days a month, a community network volunteer could make such a difference to their own life as well as others. St. Modwen appoints new town centre manager for Wythenshawe St. Modwen, expert developer and regeneration specialist, has appointed a new Town Centre Manager in Wythenshawe, strengthening the operational management of the popular town centre. Daniel Davis has more than 10 years’ experience of retail and centre management and has managed three local retail centres, including Crownpoint shopping park in Denton and Elk Mill shopping park in Oldham, during his previous role for Broadgate Estates.

In his new role Daniel will lead on the operational management of the town centre working alongside retailers and other occupiers, as well as supporting St. Modwen with the further development of the town centre.

He will be responsible for managing the day-to-day running of Wythenshawe Town Centre, which boasts 88,000 sq ft of office space and 360,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space currently leased to 90 tenants, including Asda, Boots and Argos.

Over the coming months, Daniel will work with a range of partners to cement Wythenshawe’s status as a great place for shopping and working. He will also focus on enhancing the visitor experience, growing the shopping centre’s customer base and organising family events and entertainment.

Daniel, said: “St. Modwen has an excellent reputation for managing successful town centres so I’m thrilled to be joining the team. I’m looking forward to meeting old and new

customers and retailers over the coming months.

“There is a real opportunity for the town centre to thrive and I’m really looking forward to working with the local community and St. Modwen in Wythenshawe.”

Paul Brustad, Senior Asset Manager at St. Modwen, said: “We are pleased to welcome Daniel to our Wythenshawe Town Centre team. He brings with him years of retail experience and knowledge which will be invaluable as we continue to enhance the town centre. Daniel will play a pivotal role in engaging with the local community and breathing new life into the town centre.”

Prior to his appointment at Wythenshawe Town Centre, Daniel was a Centre Manager for Broadgate Estates, overseeing the management of three local retail centres within the British Land retail portfolio, covering over 600,000 sq ft of outdoor retail space with 70 occupiers and an annual footfall of over 18m.

Wythenshawe Town Centre is in a prime location within one mile of the M56 and M62, just eight miles from Manchester City Centre and two miles from Manchester Airport with a new Metrolink station, opened in 2015, linking the two.

Vodafone #CodeLikeAGirl workshop encourages local girls to consider technology careers Vodafone’s offices in Wythenshawe recently hosted a four-day work experience course to teach teenage girls how to code and encourage them to study STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

Some 16 local girls, aged between 14 and 18 years old, took part in the #CodeLikeAGirl programme. During the programme, the Vodafone team taught the girls technical coding and by the end of the week they were able to create their own website.

The girls’ websites were judged by senior Vodafone Managers. The winning team was Rand Abadi and Lily Ashworth with their website “Luv Clothes” The website is about allowing consumers to give honest clothing reviews and direct links to where you can buy the clothes.

Northenden’s Guided Walks continue to gather pace

The annual Northenden Boat Race holds a special place in the history of Northenden’s guided walks. It was at the 2017 Boat Race that the first walks were trialled and those who attended on that hot August Sunday were politely informed they were ‘guinea pigs’ as the walks were in their experimental phase.

That was some understatement as the first walk, estimated to take 75 minutes, lasted more than two hours. Indeed, a Northenden hour was akin to a country mile. Iinvaluable lessons were learned that day and now the walks last their intended length.

Stephen Evans, Chair of Northenden Civic Society, Wythenshawe History Group and Lead Project Coordinator for Now-Forever Heritage, said: After these first walks, which were positively received, we were uncertain whether there was any sustainable demand for more but tentatively organised another that October.

Again, the response was amazing with plenty of positive feedback – it was only then that we knew the walks had legs – please pardon the terrible pun!

Northenden had a thriving tourist industry from the 1920s up to the 1960s we were unaware how far people travelled to enjoy its amenities.”

From the first walks the organisers have always carried a collection of old images for people to compare the village of then with the Northenden of now. All routes are wheelchair and pram/buggy friendly and thanks to the generosity of Otten Penna solicitors we have walking cane seats for those who may need a breather along the way.

Stephen, added: “Through Council support we use portable amplifiers and mics - essential when competing with noisy traffic and we have been able to promote the walks through posters and flyers, thanks to Tesco Bags of Help.

“Since then, the walks have gone from strength to strength and proven popular - 51 people attended the last and we have added several routes for variety and choice. As well as the wellbeing and health benefits of the walks, there are opportunities to learn about the area’s rich history and heritage. This is a two-way process as we benefit as much from the interesting facts and anecdotes participants pass to us adding to our own understanding of the area and informing future walks.

“These walks are only possible through our dedicated team of volunteers who help design routes and are very knowledgeable.

Many of our volunteers started as participants on a walk and enjoyed the experience so much they wanted to be involved.

St. Wilfrid’s Church has been fantastic serving refreshments at the walk’s conclusion and so has Stephen Morrison, of the Royal British Legion, who has waited patiently in all weathers for our parties to arrive at the War Memorial.

“John told such a story. He grew up in Blackpool in the 1950s and told me that it was common for people in Blackpool to book coach trips for a day out in Northenden. He fondly remembers the annual trip with his parents aboard a ‘charabanc’ to Northenden where they would picnic, hire boats and row along the Mersey before visiting the fun fair (now the Riverside Caravan Park) and have tea (dinner) at one of the numerous cafes and guest houses that catered for tourists. Hidden heritage of Manchester woodlands to be revealed Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the project, which has been awarded £182,900 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), aims to restore and revitalise three important historic woodlands in the Greater Manchester suburb of Wythenshawe; Sandilands Wood; The Brundrit and Ash Wood.

Just eight miles from the city centre the woodlands are home to a variety of wildlife, including foraging bats and are a haven amongst the urban sprawl, forming a network of mature woodlands across the borough.

As well as restoring the natural heritage, the two-year project will work in partnership with charity Back on Track and hundreds of volunteers to connect local communities to the woodland around them and provide opportunities for people who want to develop their skills, improve their confidence and general wellbeing.

Andy Long, City of Trees, said: “The area has always had a special connection to trees and woods Wythenshawe comes from AngloSaxon “Withigensceaga” meaning ‘small wood of withy (willow) trees’.

“Thanks to National Lottery players, this project will focus on bringing these natural heritage assets back into use for both people and wildlife.”

The area has a fascinating history linked to the industrial revolution and the city region’s rapid growth. The woodlands are part of the rich history of the area, and are relics of the major rural estates of Tatton and Massey which dominated the landscape from the 13th to 19th centuries.

For hundreds of years the historic 15th century, Grade 2 listed Wythenshawe Hall and most of the land in that area was privately owned, but there was a desperate need to house the city’s booming population. The land was purchased by the ‘Manchester Corporation’ and what used to be farmland was transformed into one of the largest housing estates in Europe.

Wythenshawe was intended as a ‘garden city’ where people could be rehoused away from industrial Manchester and breathe in clean air. All three sites have been woodlands for hundreds of years and are part of the legacy of the former wooded, agricultural and parkland landscape that existed before the rapid expansion of Manchester’s southern suburbs from the 1920’s onwards.

St Ann’s - Message in a bottle helps local patients A simple 'Message in a Bottle' is an easy way for St Ann's Hospice patients to pass on vital personal and medical details. The small green bottles - donated by South Manchester Lions - are kept in the fridge and save emergency services valuable time if going into a home. kin. Long-serving Lions Laurie and Maureen Oatway, from Baguley, organised the St Ann's donation. Wythenshawe Fire Brigade have also just received a supply of bottles.

Laurie is the new President of South Manchester Lions, formed in 2017 as part of a group re-structure. Wife Maureen is Secretary.

Laurie, said: "The Lions locally have supported St Ann's Hospice for a long time with fundraising because it's a such a good cause. All the emergency services are aware of the 'Message in a Bottle' scheme which is just one of many ways the Lions internationally have supported communities for the last 101 years."

Rachael Ainsworth, Nurse Key Worker at St Ann's, said: "We'd like to thank the Lions for their support and I know the bottles will benefit some of our patients. For example, it might be someone who lives alone and may have memory problems. The bottles also avoid the Ambulance Service having to search for medical and personal documents when called out in an emergency."

St Ann's is the latest organisation to sign up to the long-running nationwide Lions project which also involves GP surgeries, pharmacies and hospitals.

Summer Reading Challenge at Forum Library More than 250 children attended Summer Reading Challenge activities at Forum Library, Wythenshawe, over the summer holidays.

They took part in a number of free activities such as comic strip crafts, disguises and pranks, virtual reality and activity sessions.

The theme this year was Mischief Makers, inspired by the Beano, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2018. Young readers were invited to explore a map of Beanotown to find the buried treasure, with Beano characters Dennis, Gnasher and friends, helping them to solve clues.

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to borrow books from the library and to complete a series of challenges such as: • Read with your family in an unusual place • Swap a book with a friend or sibling • Read a magazine, newspaper, website article or poem.

Manchester takes big stride to prioritise a more active city Manchester is set to take a big stride forward in getting its residents active, moving, and living longer - and it's all thanks to national lottery players.

Sport England has awarded the city £1.5m of National Lottery funding to launch a local scheme - a Sport England Local Delivery Pilot (LDP) to tackle physical inactivity amongst different age groups living in the city.

Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of premature deaths in the UK and costs the country an estimated £7.4bn a year. In Manchester alone the total cost of inactivity per year including absence from work is estimated to be £63.5m.

"We already invest heavily in sports across the city, and as a result Manchester is home to some of the best professional sports facilities you'll find anywhere, that are the envy of other cities nationally and internationally.

The new funding will be used to make getting active even easier and to get even more Manchester people moving.

Working collaboratively across health, voluntary, and neighbourhood services, the LDP will target its work at getting three particular groups of people moving and active - each group having been identified as more likely to be inactive than others living in the city.

The three groups set to be targeted include young people aged 5-18 outside of school; people out of work and people in work but at risk of becoming workless; and people aged 40-60 with, or at risk of, long term conditions, specifically cancer, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disorders.

First steps for Manchester on getting local people more active will be to talk with residents about the barriers that stop them getting involved in physical activities and what can be done to remove them.

Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College posts ‘Outstanding’ results Students at Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College celebrate another year of excellent results.

The pass rate on level 3 programmes is 99.4%.

Even though by common consent A levels are more challenging, the College achieved an overall A level pass rate of 99% compared to 97.6% nationally. This maintained the upward trend of success and achievement over the last 5 years.

The success at A level was mirrored by high achievement on vocational programmes such as BTEC, with an overall achievement rate of 100%.

Of course, what really matters to students is that they achieve the grades necessary for them to pursue their career ambitions be it university or higher apprenticeships.

In this respect high grade success at A level was 66% whereas on vocational programmes 50% achieved Distinction or Distinction*. 34 subjects at A level achieved 100% pass rates.

Commenting on this year’s success, Jenny Singleton, Principal and Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted with the College’s A Level and Vocational results which have shown a pattern of continuous improvement upon previous years.

“This year the College has a significant number of students achieving either a triple Distinction* or 3 or more A levels at A* or A, and we are thrilled that they will now progress to some of the country’s top universities. For those not wishing to attend University, I am delighted that so many of our students have secured excellent employment or apprenticeship opportunities.

“I would like to pass on my congratulations to all our students and their families and wish them well for the future. I would also like to thank our staff for their unwavering commitment and support of our students.”

Jenny also commented that: “These set of examination results make Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College one of the best sixth form providers in the area. Our specialist staff are very much looking forward to welcoming our new students following the publication of the GCSE results.”

Young people leaving care in Manchester to be exempt from Council Tax up to age 25 Care leavers in Manchester will now be exempt from paying any Council Tax until they reach the age of 25 following a decision by the Council's Executive.

The Executive agreed plans to give young people living in Manchester who have previously been in care a discount of 100% on their council tax until they turn 25.

The approval follows the decision taken by the council last July to exempt all care-leavers living in the city from paying council tax up to the age of 21.

Since agreeing this approach last year there have been further developments in terms of the support offered to care leavers in the city, including a decision to set up a new wholly council-owned company to deliver a bespoke leaving care service to all our care leavers.

Legislation that came into force in April also extends the support available to care-leavers, including giving them the right to ask for a personal assistant up until the age of 25.

In line with these developments, the Executive's decision means that any young person living in Manchester who has been in care for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14, and who was in care on their 16th birthday will now be exempt from paying council tax until their 25th birthday.

Councillor Carl Ollerhead, Executive Member for Finance and Human Resources, Manchester City Council, said: "Manchester’s care leavers are very much 'Our Children' and as corporate parents, we have a duty and a moral responsibility to ensure that the steps they take into the adult world are supported and that we give them the help and guidance they need.

"Making sure we do this is one of the council's key priorities and I hope our decision to exempt them from council tax until they turn 25 will at the very least help them with their finances as they find a place to live of their own."

The proposals are in line with the Government’s recently published ‘Keep on Caring’, that encourages local authorities to consider the role of a Corporate Parent through ‘the lens of what any reasonable parent does to give their child the best start in life.’

They also take on board the findings of a 2015 report by the Children’s Society ‘The Wolf at the Door - how council tax debt collection is harming children’ that care leavers are a particularly vulnerable group for council tax debt.

In addition to this care-leavers nationally have also consistently reported that they were insufficiently prepared for the realities of living independently, particularly in relation to budgeting.

The Executive's decision recognises the challenges facing care leavers and it’s hoped providing this support will help them better manage the social and financial transition from local authority care to independent living.

The Council is currently responsible for 750 care leavers, and it is estimated that there are around 250 additional young people aged 21-25 years of age.

Councillor Garry Bridges, Executive Member for Children and Families, Manchester City Council, said: “We’ve listened to what our children and young people are telling us that they have fewer support networks and taking their first steps into independent living is already challenging for them.

“Manchester City Council has always been proud to think big - and on young people leaving our care we make no exception. Our ambition is that every young person ends up with the same support we’d give our own children. That’s a difficult challenge - because these young people have gone through things that we wouldn’t want anyone to go through and their needs are greater.

“That’s why we want to transform our service for young people leaving our care to meet those needs - we know they have untapped potential and we want to do everything we can to help them succeed at the highest level.”

Following this decision the exemption will be applied to all 2018/19council tax bills for careleavers in the city, backdated to 1 April 2018 where appropriate. Care leavers who become responsible for Council Tax after this date will be granted the discount from the date of occupation of their property.

Saint Paul’s take FIRST place in the Stock Market Challenge A group of Year 10 students from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe, took part in the Stock Market Challenge at Manchester Business School.

The event was based on the real life stock exchange whereby the students buy and sell shares in real time, based on news reports/updates. The idea being to make sound investments based on the information provided and analysing the news as it is presented, with ultimate aim of being the team with most amount of profit by the end of the exercise.

The competition’s key objectives were to enable students to apply their learning in mathematics, and to develop business awareness, transferable and employability skills, enterprise and entrepreneurship.

Mr Paul Seddon, Head of Maths at Saint Paul’s, said: “We were delighted that the Saint Paul’s team came first in the competition turning their initial investment of £20,000 to a final total of £69,700.

Saint Paul’s was competing against 23 teams from 21 schools from across Greater Manchester and was delighted to achieve FIRST place.

The competition is a great way to encourage team building and wide variety of employability and communication skills and has strong links to business related mathematics. The challenge taught students that you have to work well in a team and commit to your particular job in order for the whole team to benefit. It also helped them to develop skills which would be essential for a job in this area, such as quick thinking, analysing information, making reasoned evaluations, applying critical thinking and decision making.”

Pupils had to buy and sell shares in a similar fashion to how the stock market worked in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Each pupil had a role to perform: Finance Manager, Investment Analyst, Media Analyst, Floor Trader (Seller) and Floor Trader (Buyer).

The team were given an initial amount of £20,000 and had to make as much money as possible across five simulated days. Each simulated day lasted around 30 minutes and pupils had to buy and sell shares in real time, reacting to intermittent television news bulletins, radio news bulletins, daily newspaper articles and news flashes.

The challenge provided students with a chance to increase their business and economic understanding, put their mathematics to the test and develop key skills such as team working, problem solving,

St. Modwen renews sponsorship of Wythenshawe AFC Wythenshawe Amateur Football Club Girls Under 12’s team will be starting the new season match ready in kit provided by corporate sponsor St. Modwen.

St. Modwen, which owns and manages Wythenshawe Town Centre, has renewed its sponsorship for the club for the fifth season, choosing to sponsor the kit for the newly formed U12’s Girls team for 2018-2019.

Wythenshawe Amateur Ladies make SSE FA Cup progress It was the first time an FA Cup game has been staged in Wythenshawe as Wythenshawe Amateurs Ladies played Accrington Stanley in the Preliminary Round of the Women’s FA Cup at Wythenshawe’s new Hollyhedge Community Stadium.

John Cotton, Secretary of Wythenshawe Ladies, said: “Wythenshawe’s star striker, Natalie Taylor, opened the scoring in the first half before Stanley levelled before the break, a further strike by Taylor and goals by Charlotte Robertson, Jessica Marsh and Carli Mantack sealed a 5-1 win for a place in the next round.”

Families encouraged to ‘Go Wild in the Woods’ this summer The ‘Go Wild in the Woods’ campaign is being ran across the summer to help give families fun, free things to do.

It’s been led by City of Trees, who as well as planting 3m trees across Greater Manchester, and bringing woodland back into use, wants to connect people to the nature on their doorstep.

A recent study highlighted that seven-out-of-10 people feel they are losing touch with nature and more than a third of parents admit they could not teach their own children about British wildlife.

The resources are available as downloads on the City of Trees website and suggests fun, family-friendly activities such as mini-beast hunts and building bug hotels that can do done either in a local park or woodland, or back at home on a rainy day.

City of Trees have also produced a ‘Where to go’ guide to help give Greater Manchester residents a taste of some of the region’s top parks and woods with local gems including Manchester’s Heaton Park and Wigan’s Haigh Woodland Park.

Families are being encouraged to share their wild woodland times with the charity via facebook, Instagram and twitter using #gowildinthewoods.

‘Town’ make history and go Semi-Pro Wythenshawe Town have been accepted into the Hallmark Security League for the 2018/19 season.

Achieving Step 6 football for the first time in the club’s history has been a long-term aim for Town and is a reward for the hard work throughout the last few seasons both on and off the pitch.

Having entered the Cheshire League in Division Two in 2014, after 40 years in the Manchester League, Wythenshawe Town were writing headlines immediately; going a full season unbeaten is not easy at any level but Town achieved exactly this to earn promotion at the first time of asking. Ericstan Park has become home to an established team in the Cheshire Football League Premier Division with all visitors knowing they will have to work hard to leave with any points at all.

Chairman Kenny Hope, who has been instrumental in achieving this aim, said: "Promotion is confirmed. It's a very proud day for Wythenshawe Town now we are a semi-professional football club. Just four seasons ago we lay in Division 2 of the Cheshire Football League.

“It's truly amazing all the work, passion, desire and commitment by so many fantastic people to get us here and it's been an absolute joy to be part of this wonderful group of volunteers here at the club."

The League, which is also known as the North West Counties, is undergoing a restructure to reduce the distances teams are required to travel and to implement the FA decision that all Divisions below Step 3 will be formed of 20 clubs.

This involves the formation of a North and South Division underneath the

Premier Division, mirroring the structure of both the Northern Premier League and the National League. To do this, the Hallmark Security League needed to increase the number of teams within their divisions providing an intriguing opportunity for clubs such as Wythenshawe Town.

When looking through the provisional league, there is one fixture that stands out. Next season will see the Town take on neighbours Wythenshawe Amateurs in what is sure to be an intense derby fixture for both newcomers to Semi-Professional football. A town with the footballing heritage of Wythenshawe has been crying out for this level of football meaning this match is sure to attract plenty of attention.

Town are not the only Cheshire League team to make the step up, with Rylands and Linotype Cheadle-Heath Nomads also joining the newly formed Hallmark Security League South.

However, there will be plenty of new challenges for Town next term. Trips to established clubs such as Maine Road and Stockport Town will provide compelling tests for the team on this venture into Semi-Professional football.

It is an exiting prospect for the club to be entering the Hallmark Security League. We would like to thank the Cheshire League for their support over the past few years and the friends we have made in one of the best Step 7 leagues around.

However, the 2018/19 season can’t come quickly enough for everyone involved with Wythenshawe Town as we enter the most exciting season in the club’s history.

The Community Book Swap scheme in the Forum Café is proving to be very popular, with a regular turnover of books being taken, returned and donated. Sometimes the books don't come back, which is absolutely fine, particularly in the case of children's books if they have grown to love them! The Forum Trust stocks up every now and again with books that people have finished with and are happy to recycle. Local businesses and people are very generous with their donations, which are most gratefully received at the Forum's Leisure Reception.
