About SAR Philharmonic Orchestra

The SAR Philharmonic Orchestra (www.sarpo. org) has a simple goal: Helping to lessen suffering through Sweet And Romantic music. This is mostly carried out by presenting concerts for fund raising by other charitable organizations.

The SAR Philharmonic Orchestra is the musical arm of the SAR Philharmonic Charitable Foundation Limited, a Hong Kong Government registered Charitable Foundation. The orchestra performs several concerts a year and since the first concert in 1999 over $60 million have been raised for local charities.

Orchestra members are dedicated volunteers who give their services freely – thus maximizing the financial benefits for the recipient charity. The orchestra boasts over 100 members and presents ambitious programs for full symphony orchestra. Under the baton of our Music Director K. K. Chiu, we have performed some 150 concerts including the complete symphonic cycle of Gustav Mahler.

In July 2023, our orchestra had our first very successful international ten day tour to Germany. Members travelled at their own expense to play in 3 concerts, partnering with two German community orchestras - Lufoniker BASF orchestra in Ludwigshafen and Auftakt Orchestra in Heidelberg, raising funds for local hospitals and music schools.

Message from Dr.Alex Ling

It gives me great pleasure to present tonight’s fund-raising concert for our special charity partner, Lifewire. They unite patients, medical experts, donors and volunteers together as a community to raise funds and provide services for the needs of children with rare diseases.

SARPO have prepared music to help tell these patients’ stories tonight. It is our hope you will also be moved by their enduring passion for life which inspires all of us to do our part to help and support them.

SARPO will begin by playing Edward Elgar’s “Chanson de Matin” and “Chanson de Nuit”. These two nature inspired pieces will be the live

background music to tonight’s unique story presentation.

We will continue with the enchanting sound of the harp with Saint-Saen’s Morceau de concert written for Harp and Orchestra. We have the honor to feature one of Hong Kong’s top harpist Ms. Lauyee Yeung as our soloist.

Post-intermission, the enduring power of nature and life is conjured up through Felix Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony. It took 13 years for him to write this work, from 18291842. You will hear many sounds that will remind you of the Scottish countryside and its power of nature, as well as Scottish folk music where Mendelssohn drew much of his inspiration.

I’m very excited for all of us as tonight will definitely be a memorable concert experience for performers and audience alike.

About Lifewire

Lifewire Foundation Limited, founded in 2014 by Chun Wo Development Holdings Limited, is Hong Kong’s very first crowdfunding platform for children with rare diseases. Through documenting and sharing patients’ stories with the public, Lifewire strives to raise funds to support patients’ medical needs and to promote an inclusive society through rare disease education.

In 2024, Lifewire once again co-organized the “Lifewire Charity Concert 2024” with the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra. The theme of this year’s concert is “Green”, symbolizing the vitality and resilience of children with rare diseases, as well as promotion environmental friendliness and protection.

Founder's Message – Ir Dr.Derrick Pang,JP

Together with The SAR Philharmonic Orchestra, Lifewire is once again organizing a remarkable charity concert for children with rare diseases. As the founder of Lifewire, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the orchestra, our amazing and long-standing partner. This year, Lifewire is approaching its significant 10-year milestone. To mark this special occasion, we’ve chosen the concert theme“Green”, which not only reflects our journey and growth over the years but also symbolizes the resilience and vitality of children with rare diseases, while promoting environmental friendliness and protection. Our goal is to foster love and care within the community to nurture our incredible children.

One of our inspiring service users, Chan Tsz Kin, a young male patient with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, along with his mother, is documenting his extraordinary journey in a project called“Those I Am Thankful For”. I am incredibly lucky to be a part of it, where he expresses gratitude to everyone who has supported him and listened to his life story. In reality, he’s the one who’s inspiring us all and deserve the applause.

Individuals with rare diseases face numerous challenges in their lives. However, their indomitable spirits and extraordinary courage shine through. Despite the challenges they face, they inspire us and truly embrace life. At Lifewire, we believe that our relationship with our services users is a two-way street. By extending our helping hand to them, they uplift us and show us what true strength is all about.

The idea behind Lifewire’s establishment was inspired by my father when I was young. After returning home late at night from

volunteering for people with disabilities, he said,“You won’t be helping alone if you study hard and work hard in your early life. You will be able to bring people to help.”Despite starting with only a few dedicated members, Lifewire is thriving and uniting stakeholders from all walks of life together, promoting social inclusion.

In the past decade, we’ve raised $27 million and provided assistance to 900 families and over 3000 individuals in need. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for all the supports and contributions that have allowed Lifewire to continue its services and spread love throughout society.

We eagerly anticipate your ongoing support, and I extend my warmest wishes to all of you for a wonderful evening. Thank you!

Ir Dr. Pang Yat Bond, Derrick, JP

Edward Elgar - Chanson de Matin Op.15, No.2 and Chanson de Nuit Op.15, No.1

Elgar is often regarded as the quintessential English composer, with his music evoking the feel of the English countryside. However, it is interesting to note that his main musical influences were from continental Europe. Indeed, he was contemptuous of folk music, and of English composers, he regarded Henry Purcell as the greatest, and claimed he learned all he knew from studying Hubert Parry’s writings. European influences came from Handel, Dvorak, Wagner and Brahms, while his orchestration benefits from the clarity of the French composers Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Massenet and Delibes. Among his greatest compositions are the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, two symphonies, a violin and a cello concerto and the choral work The Dream of Gerontius.

The two works in our concert today started life as pieces for violin and piano. They were written in around 1889/90 but not published until 1899. Two years later, Elgar published his orchestral transcription, using pared back instrumentation of strings, one flute, one oboe, two clarinets, one bassoon, two horns and harp. The two pieces were first performed together at a Queen’s Hall Promenade concert in London, conducted by Henry Wood on 14th September, 1901. Some critics prefer the Chanson de Nuit as the more profound of the two works. However, the fresh melodic appeal of the Chanson de Matin has made it the more popular of the pair, Chanson de Matin translates from the French as “Morning Song”, Chanson de Nuit as “Evening Song”. We invite you to sit back, close your eyes and imagine a beautiful, green English summer’s morning, with the sound of birdsong in the verdant green trees and the insects humming in the lush grass. The violins playing a melody of great charm and innocence, evoking the simple days of a childhood summer. Then, after a long day of sunshine, the evening drawing in. Dusk appears, and bats flit from tree to tree, catching the many insects that come out in the twilight. Owls hoot in the distance, and the countryside is at peace.

I.

II.

III.

IV.

Allegro non troppo – Allegro moderato – Attacca

Andante sostenuto

Molto Allegro quasi presto – Attacca Allegro non troppo – Animato – Molto Allegro

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)

Morceau de concert for Harp and Orchestra, op. 154

Saint-Saëns wrote several pieces for solo instrument and orchestral accompaniment that bear the title Morceau de concert –literally translated as concertpiece – and which act as small-scale concertos. This piece was composed during World War I and followed a form of a small-scale fourmovement concerto:

I.

II.

III.

IV.

Allegro non troppo – Allegro moderato – Attacca

Andante sostenuto

Molto Allegro quasi presto – Attacca Allegro non troppo – Animato – Molto Allegro

The piece begins with a beautiful harp cadenza, setting the theme, which is built up by different variations. Instead of complicated harmonies, it features different combinations of instruments and variations. The opening theme is reprised in the final movement as a conclusion.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847) Bartholdy - Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56, “Scottish”

German composer Mendelssohn’s best known works include the overture and incidental music for “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”, the “Italian” symphony, the oratorios “St. Paul” and “Elijah”,

the “Hebrides” overture, the violin concerto in E minor, the string octet, the melody for the famous Christmas carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and the work being performed this evening, the “Scottish” symphony.

Mendelssohn started writing the “Scottish” symphony during a trip to Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh in 1829, when he noted down the theme of the opening. He wrote the following in a letter to family: In the deep twilight we went today to the palace where Queen Mary (Mary, Queen of Scots) lived and loved...... The chapel below is now roofless. Grass and ivy thrive there and at the broken altar where Mary was crowned Queen of Scotland. Everything is ruined, decayed, and the clear heavens pour in. I think I have found there the beginning of my “Scottish” symphony. Enclosed with this letter was a scrap of paper containing the sketches of the opening bars of this symphony.

During the same trip, Mendelssohn visited the western coast of Scotland, which inspired him to write his “Hebrides” overture. After completing the first version of this overture, Mendelssohn continued to work on his symphony, but struggled to make progress. After 1831, he put the work aside for the time being. However, by the late 1830s, sketches show that Mendelssohn had returned to writing the first movement, and he finally completed the symphony in Berlin on 20th January, 1842. It was premiered in the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 3rd March, 1842. After some early performances, Mendelssohn revised the work, excising some 111 bars in total, and it is this version of the work that is performed today. Although this was the fifth and final symphony of Mendelssohn to be completed, it was the third to be published and is known as Symphony No.3.

The symphony is written in four interconnected movements, which Mendelssohn has unusually marked to be played without breaks. The opening movement begins Andante con moto in A minor, expanding into the Allegro un poco agitato. The second movement, Vivace non troppo, is in the rhythm and style of a Scottish folk song, using notes of the pentatonic scale and the typical Scottish snap rhythm. The third movement, Adagio, maintains the apparent struggle between love and fate. The final movement, Allegro vivacissimo – Allegro maestoso assai, continues with the Scottish theme with a folk dance-like melody.
