Jesus Came to Help

FOR THE LEADER

John 3:1-21 The Gospel of John is unique among the four gospels. John’s Gospel includes many unique details. John’s purpose for writing his Gospel was to provide evidence that Jesus Christ was indeed the Messiah, the one and only son of God. John actually begins his Gospel similarly to Matthew, Mark, and Luke with genealogical information, though John begins farther back than any of the others—in the very beginning. God existed in the beginning and John introduces Jesus’ oneness with God in the beginning and then becoming flesh. John identifies Jesus as the Word of God. After introducing Jesus as the Word become flesh, the Gospel of John continues as a series of stories that John recorded so he could show that Jesus was indeed who John claimed He was. The first major story John tells is of a visit to Jesus from one of the leaders of the Jews named Nicodemus. Being a ruler of the Jews meant that Nicodemus was not just a respected member of Jewish life, but he served on the Sanhedrin. This council was comprised of 71 members led by the High Priest. As a member of the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus would have been well versed in Jewish law and religious life. Nicodemus went to Jesus at night and recognized Jesus as being sent from God. Nicodemus understood that Jesus was a prophet, but he did not grasp yet that Jesus was the Son of God. Further, Nicodemus identified Jesus as a rabbi, or teacher, and put himself in the role of learner. Both of these admissions show that Nicodemus was truly seeking real answers to his questions. Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus led Nicodemus to question the details of eternal life. Jesus clarified for Nicodemus what it meant to be born again. Jesus told Nicodemus real eternal life comes through a relationship with God, which can be gained through trust in God’s plan to send His one and only Son to die for the sins of all people. God sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from our sin.

JESUS TALKED TO NICODEMUS John 3:1-21

Jesus traveled to many places to teach people. People saw Jesus do amazing things. News about Jesus spread and the people heard about the wonderful things Jesus did. Nicodemus was a leader in Jerusalem and a teacher of the Law. Nicodemus was curious about Jesus. Nicodemus wondered who Jesus was. One night Nicodemus decided to find Jesus and talk to Him. When Nicodemus found Jesus, he said: “Rabbi, we know You are a teacher who has come from God. No one could do what You do if God wasn’t with him.” Jesus cared about Nicodemus. Jesus wanted to help Nicodemus and other people know how they could be with God forever. Jesus told Nicodemus that he had to be born again. Now Nicodemus was very confused! What did Jesus mean? How could a person be a baby two times? Jesus helped Nicodemus understand that people are born the first time as real live people. They eat, sleep, walk, talk, and other people can see them. The second time people are born is when the people believe (have faith) in Jesus. The people still have their bodies like before, but they think and act differently because they love Jesus. It is like they are brand new people! Nicodemus still did not know exactly what Jesus meant, so he listened some more. Jesus said, “God loved everyone so much that He sent Me, His Son, to teach people and show them how to be God’s children. When people believe in Me, they can live with God forever.”

LEADER TIP You choose! Are your preschoolers ready to learn memory verses? Decide which wording of the Bible verse you want to use with your group.

BIBLE STORY

JESUS AND NICODEMUS John 1; 3

The Apostle John described Jesus as “the Word.” John used this term to describe that Jesus was divine revelation. John wrote, “In the beginning was the Word (Jesus) and the Word (Jesus) was with God and the Word (Jesus) was God. Everything was created through Him. The Word also became human and came to earth to live with us. Jesus, who is God, has revealed God to us.” John also described a time when a religious leader came to visit Jesus. A man named Nicodemus came one night to visit Jesus. He told Jesus, “You are a teacher from God. No one could perform the miracles you do unless He was from God.” Jesus told Nicodemus, “Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus was confused. How could someone be born a second time? Jesus explained people needed to be spiritually born. People needed to be cleansed of their sin and transformed by God. Nicodemus was still confused. Jesus told Nicodemus some things that we understand better now because we know Jesus died on the cross and was raised from the dead. Jesus said, “Like Moses lifted up the bronze snake in the wilderness, the Son of Man will also be lifted up. Everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. For God loved the world in this way: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

KEY POINTS • Jesus has always existed. He was with God in the beginning when the world was created. • God sent Jesus, His one and only Son, to rescue us from our sin. It is through Jesus that we can be saved.

The artist who made this sculpture is showing that Nicodemus helped take care of Jesus’ body after He died.” • Say: “Today we’re going to read about Nicodemus and a meeting that he had with Jesus at night.”

TOOLS: • Jump In: “Nicodemus Sculpture” (DVD-ROM) • Examine the Text: Bibles, “Text Truth Strips” (Poster Pack) • Play the Video: Explore the Bible on Location video • Memory Verse: “John 3:16” (Poster Pack), dictionary • Prayer: Family Cards

EXAMINE THE TEXT • Direct the kids to open their Bibles to John 3. • Display the “Text Truth Strip.” Jesus is the Word of God who became fully human to rescue us from our sin. • Ask a volunteer to explain what sin is. (Anything we think, do, or say that breaks God’s law) • Tell the Bible story in your own words. A Bible story page has been provided for you to use as a guide. • Ask a volunteer to read John 3:3. • Ask: “What do you think Jesus means when He says we need to be born again?” (Answers will vary.) • Explain: “The Bible tells us that we are dead in our sins. This means that even though our bodies are alive, because we think, say, and do things that break God’s law, we are spiritually dead. We need Jesus to give us new life.” • Ask a volunteer to read John 3:16. • Ask: “According to John 3:16, what do we need to do in order to get new life?” (Believe in Jesus.) • Draw attention to verses 14-15. • Explain: “Just like the Israelites were saved by God after they sinned, we have the opportunity to be saved from our sins. Only Jesus can give us new life. Jesus is the Word of God who became fully human to rescue us from our sin. The Israelites looked at the snake on the pole to be saved from physical death—we can look to Jesus on the cross and trust that He has made the payment for all of our sins so we can be saved from spiritual death. We can repent of our sin and trust Jesus as our Savior and Lord.”

¨¨ In the center of a pie tin, use the marker to write Old Testament. Label the other tin New Testament. On each clothespin, write one book of the Bible until you have a clothespin for every book. Place the clothespins inside their respective pie tins, depending on whether they are labeled with Old or New Testament books. • Group the kids into two teams and give each team a pie tin with clothespins. • Challenge the teams to see who can clip the clothespins around the edge of the pie tin in the correct order. • Show kids how to use the table of contents in the front of their Bibles for reference. • Switch pie tins and allow the teams to try again with a different set of books. • Say: “These books contain everything that God wants us to know about Him. He wants us to know Him more. That’s why it’s important that we read our Bibles. The more we learn about God’s Word, the more we’ll learn about Him.” • Continue: “God also sent Jesus to earth so we could understand more about God and His plan for us. Jesus is the Word of God who became fully human to rescue us from our sin.” • For an extra challenge, instruct the kids to sort their clothespins into Bible divisions.

NICOD SCULP EMUS TURE

This sculpture, created in the style of a Spanish artist named Juan de Valmaseda, is made from walnut wood and gilded in precious metals. Art experts think this sculpture could represent Nicodemus.

The Bible tells us that Nicodemus helped take care of Jesus’ body after He died. The sculpture’s sad expression and the cloths in its hands remind people of this Bible story. But the cross isn’t the first time Nicodemus was with Jesus. Check out John 3 to find out what happened when Nicodemus secretly visited Jesus in the night.
