Personal stylists find clothing that complements your taste in fashion and for your lifestyle. They have an eye for what will and will not work for your body type and personality. “Retail therapy” is a common phrase and has proven to be a factual statement. If retail is therapy, then a personal stylist is the therapist. Here are some tips that will help you make the most of your personal stylist experience.

First, you should understand the vision you’re going for and share that idea with the stylist. I would recommend having a mood board on Pinterest or even pictures from Google to reference what to embody for style.

Secondly, understanding how to shop for the right stylist; not all stylists cater to the same clientele. Shop for a stylist based on your needs. If you need to consult your image for an editorial shoot, you should hire someone who caters to editorial photography or design.

If you’re an actor and need a headshot or build a portfolio for commercial & marketing, then shop for a stylist that caters to film or commercial. The styling arena is vast; therefore, not every stylist carries the same eye or skill set.

Thirdly, be honest about your budget. The cost of a stylist is usually tailored to the amount of work requested. Its expenses are based upon the value of the service, so you should aim for a specific goal and be clear on what you can afford. If you’re struggling with finding clothes for work, then just focus on that rather than upgrading your entire wardrobe for the year.

Last, be open and honest about your views of yourself. This can be very challenging because most have difficulty expressing their insecurities and lack self-confidence. Being a resolution is the main objective for every stylist, so communication is key. Our job is to address the needs of one’s image and provide a solution for any challenge. Either some desire to accentuate or mask things to accomplish a flattering look. A stylist will have a few tricks up their sleeves which makes the perfect remedy for the problem. It’s our duty to achieve your vision & making it a reality.

2021 FALL TRENDS

Summer is coming to an end. And though I don’t love being cold, I’m looking forward to the Fall fashions! I love shopping for Fall clothes (boots, jackets, denim, sweaters, turtlenecks, etc.)! If you’re as excited about updating your Fall as I am, then keep reading for some of my picks for 2021 Fall Trends.

1.

Luxe Knit Sets

I think it’s safe to say that we can’t get enough of matching sets. They’re super easy to style, and they make getting dressed a breeze. This Fall, we will continue to see matching sets. However, they will be a bit more luxurious and in the form of knits— think matching knitted sweaters and pants paired together. You’ll get the coziness of loungewear, yet you’ll be polished enough for a day/evening out.

Add simple or bold accessories for a more elevated look!

Power Platforms

Platform heels have been all over the runways and in stores over the Summer. So, it should come as no surprise that they will ease their way into our Fall wardrobes in the form of platform boots and sandals. And they would go perfectly with those wide-leg jeans that I mentioned earlier. Also, style them with flared jeans, long dresses, and suede mini-skirts.

Paisley/Patchwork Pattern It’s nice to know that

we won’t have to stick to just neutrals and black this Fall. Because that would be very boring, instead try out a little paisley printed blouse or a patchwork printed dress. Most pieces this Fall will have a mixture of both. Try pairing your printed pieces with other vibrant prints. Or go with simple pairings and let your bold dress, top, or pants steal the show. Lastly, try styling your satin scarf as a top, or wear it as a headwrap. Scarves are the perfect examples of the paisley and patchwork pattern being put to work!

90’s Style Denim

No one loves a pair of skinny jeans as much as I do, but I can appreciate this next trend for Fall 2021: Loose Fitting Wide Leg Jeans. These jeans are an ode to all things 90’s fashion because of their relaxed, baggy, and cool laid-back look. They usually have a long hemline and can be styled with sneakers and a graphic tee. However, they can also be dressed up by half-tucking a bold knit into your loose-fitting jeans and adding a pair of chic suede or leather ankle boots. For accessories, add a chic crossbody bag and minimal gold jewelry.

My business was birthed in March of 2018. I prepared a dish for a friend, which led to me posting my dishes on Instagram. The very next day, a friend and I brainstormed on business names, and we came up with Rachelle’s Creative Dishes. That’s honestly how my business was started. I’ve been in business for three years now, and I’m super grateful for the opportunities and experiences I’ve had thus far.

The holidays are coming up, and it can be hectic preparing food for the family. So I want to provide you with three tips on preparing to cook for a family for the holidays

Step One Ensure that you’ve obtained all dietary needs and restrictions from the client before cultivating a menu. After spending hours cooking, one of the last things you want is to find out that some of your guests can’t partake in dinner due to food allergies or restrictions.

Step Two Create a detailed shopping list that entails all the ingredients and supplies you would need for the recipes to avoid wasting time running back and forth to the store. More people are cooking for the holidays, so it’s not unusual for specific items to run out quickly. You wouldn’t want to have to visit four different stores to make your family’s favorite dish.

Step Three Prioritizing your time while prepping and cooking is very imperative. It definitely helps, especially when you’re preparing for a large crowd. These are just a few tips that would lead you to a successful event.

If The Rose That Grew from Concrete had a persona, it would be our fall feature, Lillie Mae. This small-town North Carolina native grew up in a poor, underserved community, like the one in Boyz N The Hood. But like Tre Styles, she didn’t allow her surroundings to dictate her future. Her mother and stepfather were determined that regardless of what was

happening around her, she would have an opportunity to thrive and shine bright to become the successful woman she is today. Just like the actresses she watched on television as a kid, she was determined to be just as confident and glam in real life—and she has successfully done just that.

While the neighborhood she grew up in wasn’t the safest, inside her home, you could find a loving and spiritual environment where she was instilled with proper values and taught about faith. Unlike today’s time, where dinner is ordered in, ate in separate rooms, and conversation is replaced with scrolling on social media, they sat down at a table and ate dinner together as a family.

Her parents wanted the best for her, so when she was in fourth grade, her parents sent her to an academically enhanced school that promoted active and hands-on learning. This was a complete 180 to what Lillie Mae was used to. She was surrounded by children who were financially well off with maids and bathrooms in their rooms, while having such was unheard of for Lillie Mae. In this new school, typically, she would be the only black child in the classroom, feeling out of place like Deloris Van Cartier before she adjusted to becoming Sister Mary Clarence in Sister Act. Yet after some time, she adjusted, and this transition taught her how to embrace change and adapt to her environment—these were much needed skill sets that she uses today.

Seeing her personality today, I would assume that she’s always been glam.

But, you may be amazed to know that she considered herself a tomboy until the age of 16..."

As time went on, she became active in school, extra-curricular activities, and church. From pageants, cotillions, church choir, to ushering, she enjoyed being involved and had an appreciation for the arts. Seeing her personality today, I would assume that she’s always been glam. But, you may be amazed to know that she considered herself a tomboy until the age of 16, when she joined the flag team in high school. She was the only 10th grader on the squad and being surrounded by seniors, she started learning about makeup and enjoying shopping. This is where her “glam” emerged. Her being involved in various pursuits at such a young age is what helped groom her into the mogul she is today.

But just like the stars she admired on television, she refused to blend into the crowd and stood out as she let her talent shine. In her junior year, she secured an internship at Universal Motown Records in New York, for the summer, in their publicity department. As a 21year-old county girl in the big city of New York, her eyes lit up on her first day of the internship, when she met rap artist, Juvenile. From that day on, her interest in PR was sparked.

After graduating, she packed her things and moved to Atlanta, where she worked PR for a magazine company. She networked and collaborated with so many people that she began building a name for herself. With her passion for PR and the knowledge she gained from working at the magazine company, she was inspired to start her own magazine. Her networking and collaborating with others would soon pay off.

A friend from college reached out to her to see if she would be interested in representing someone on American Idol. She said yes and, before she knew it, she had her first client. It wasn’t luck or the networking skills that propelled her. It was her hard work and dedication to excellence that she was able to secure her first client on the Monique show, Billboard magazine, and more.

Glambitious is for the ambitious woman that loves all things glam.

I would think that she would have been nervous about being offered such a big break, but she said no. She believed in her artist, so she hit the ground running. Her schooling and previous experiences had prepared her for this moment.

Her mother always encouraged her to take chances, not to fear, step out on faith, and she did just that. She started the Lillie Mae PR Agency, a full-service PR agency specializing in media relations, event production, and creative brand activations. She’s been able to secure her other clients in features such as USA Today, Black Enterprise, Uptown Magazine, The Tom Joyner Morning Show, 11Alive, and more.

Unlike half of the businesses in the United States that only survive for five years, Lillie Mae PR Agency has been around since 2009. She operates in excellence and believes in providing a high level of customer service—giving people more than they expect. Because she thrives off of results, her business continues to grow on referrals.

But Lillie Mae didn’t just stop at her PR agency.

She started Glambitous, a platform for women to increase their visibility as an expert in their industry and reach more sales. Glambitious is for the ambitious woman that loves all things glam.

Beat face, 20 inches of hair today and afro tomorrow, yet still about her business. It all started when a client was opening up a lounge, and Lillie Mae hosted events for women to come and talk. She saw how impactful the events were and how they provided opportunities for so many women. As you can see, Lillie Mae was a trendsetter—doing women empowerment well before it was buzz term. So she took her Glambitous event on the road and built it into the brand it is today.

From operating a magazine, PR company, publishing books, being a TV personality, I wonder how she handles it all. She said she’s not as busy as everyone thinks. Her daily routine consists of an 8 am prophetic planning call with The Kingdom Business Network, where she starts her day off with God, and members hold each other accountable. Then at 11 am she hosts her own daily devotional with Glambitous members before she begins her work for the day.

Her hours for the day may vary, but she truly believes in working smarter and not harder.

She continued her education by attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), where she felt slightly out of place. She was glad and considered it an honor to attend UNC. But upon her arrival on campus, she saw freshmen girls driving Jaguars and felt as if she was an extra in Legally Blonde.

I asked if she had any words of wisdom for her ten-yearold self, and she said, “Yes, I would tell my ten-year-old self that God has so much incitement in store for you.

Continue to be your brightest, smartest, loudest self.

Don’t be worried about boys that ain’t checking for you.

If you could see what I am doing now, your mind will be blown.”

Lillie Mae’s faith is essential to her. She attributes her success to God’s grace. God is her comforter, deliverer, provider, and so much more. Seeing her mother work two jobs growing up and still having faith in God is what fuels Lillie Mae to work with other women that are kingdom-minded—whether they are entrepreneurs or not—to have a better future for themselves and family.

She encourages women to keep going as their journey is their own, and it’s their journey that makes them into the person they are destined to be. Nothing is a failure.

Everything is a learning experience. So, never give up as the process leads to the promise.

Planning the Perfect Friendsgiving

What began as a Thanksgiving alternative for people who aren’t heading home for the holidays has now become a modern twist to a timeless celebration. Friendsgiving is essentially Thanksgiving shared among friends rather than family. Usually a potluck, it’s a special time to enjoy a sumptuous spread and connect with some special people in your life.

While the guests will bring the libations and sides, the host takes care of the main course and, of course, the ambiance. Here’s how to plan an unforgettable Friendsgiving.

3. Embrace the Outdoors

Create an inviting first impression with an elevated front entrance. Layer a woven textured mat underneath a cheeky expressional mat to make your guests smile. Add some greenery with potted plants and an adorning wreath. Finish it off with subtle details in rich autumnal tones like ribbon or tags.

Bring the outdoors in. Layering in natural elements helps to make things feel cozy. Style a group of logs by the fireplace and arrange groups of greenery. Artwork that displays an autumnal landscape can emphasize the occasion without being too literal.

1. Reduces the Risks of Pregnancy Complication during Pregnancy Exercising can reduce the risks for preeclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnancy) and gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy). Additionally, exercising during pregnancy gives moms a healthy postpartum body. Exercising can also help mom maintain her current weight before and after she gets pregnant.

2. Helps Mom Manage Stress and Feel Better Exercising during pregnancy can help mom manage stress, which is a common issue for many pregnant women. When a woman exercises regularly, she releases endorphins that make her feel good—exercising while pregnant also helps mom sleep better at night, which will definitely be needed during the first and third trimesters.

3. Good for the Baby’s Health Exercising while pregnant is good for the baby’s health. It can help mom reduce her pregnancy weight gain and provide a healthy environment for her child to grow, leading to a healthy baby. Additionally, exercising can help prevent gestational diabetes by helping mom maintain a healthy blood sugar level and easing back pain that may otherwise occur during childbirth.

It is important to remember that not all exercises are safe for pregnant women. Before you begin any exercise routine, please consult your doctor to ensure the health and safety of mom and baby.

High-intensity workouts such as CrossFit, high-impact aerobics, or heavy weight lifting are not encouraged during pregnancy. If you were already doing this prior to your pregnancy, you might get the OK from your doctor, as every pregnancy is unique. Also note, that as you get further along in your pregnancy, a hormone called Relaxin loosens the pelvis’s ligaments, bones, and muscles. Hence, it can become uncomfortable and unsafe to lift heavy objects.

Certain poses in yoga, Pilates, and even some stretches for the lower back should be avoided during pregnancy unless done with supervision from an instructor who has been trained in pregnancy exercises. If you are a lover of yoga or Pilates, make sure you take advantage of their prenatal classes. These classes offer low impact, and gentle poses that are safe for mom and baby.

It is important to note that exercising can be fun and healthy during pregnancy, but it should always be done with caution. If you are unsure about exercise, please consult your doctor. Even if you get your doctor’s approval, listen to your body. Working out while pregnant can be a healthy way to help mom feel better and stay more active.

"TRANSITIONING BACK TO THE OFFICE - HOW DO WE SWITCH BACK TO NORMAL?"

From the days of wearing Lululemon leggings and sweatpants to reintroducing business attire, how can we successfully reintegrate back into corporate America and return safely? After working remotely since 2020, many companies have asked employees to return to work postpandemic. However, is it easy to adjust and transition to working in person?

As Covid vaccines are increasingly accessible, many employers ask employees to return in person, causing much anxiety. According to Forbes.com, Apple announced in September that employees must return to work three days a week. One of the most popular apps and platforms, Tik Tok, asked its workforce to return three days a week.

But how can we safely transition back to work with the rise of the Delta variant and millions of unvaccinated Americans?

Debra Sawyer, an academic success coach, describes her reality of returning to work as an educator. "This school year will be so different from any other school year. With Covid 19 and the additional variants, I feel uneasy transitioning back into the classroom. I love building relationships with my students, but I am concerned about my safety."

In May 2021, Governor Kemp signed an executive order prohibiting schools from imposing mask mandates. Today educators and students are returning in person with the rise of additional Covid strains.

Merhawit Fitwi, Branch Manager, Bank of America, states how Covid 19 and anxiety affects her job. "The transition back into the workplace does not cause me much stress. During the pandemic, I spent most of my time in my office. I was overly conscious of the mental health of my team. From an employee perspective, Bank of America makes us feel safe and follows strict CDC guidelines and mask mandates. They allow most of their employees to work from home and encourage employees to make the best decision about the vaccine."

Nevertheless, we should be mindful of being safe and talk to our employers. It is crucial to make the best decisions about our work environments and workplace safety.
