HERE
IS WHAT 2019 WILL BRING FOR TWO OF THE PAST YEAR’S STANDOUTS AND OUR NEW PICKS.
2019 CHEVY TRAVERSE AWD PREMIER Popular due to its practicality, roominess, 4G LTE WiFi, OnStar system, and comfortably fitting up to seven adults, Chevrolet’s design team added an impressive facelift to the new Traverse’s list of accolades; the custom Silver Ice Metallic body coat, 20-inch “Gloss Black” wheels with red accents, daytime running lamps, and roof rails gave the 2019 Premier edition a welcomed sporty-meets-aggressive appearance. It’s 3.6liter, V-6 heart, nine-speed automatic transmission, plethora of safety options including an “SOS” button for emergencies, “Teen Driver” technology, eight-inch color touchscreen, dual skyscape sunroof, and numerous apps for extensive mobile device capability are just few of the numerous attractions to add to its resume. Simply put, this room crossover SUV is perfect for whatever the family demands. Price: $48,200 (MSRP); $50,045 with all options For more information, visit Chevy.com 14

FORD MUSTANG GT COUPE PREMIUM The 2018 review model of this iconic 5.0-liter V8, four-passenger muscle car was dipped in the signature head-turning Orange Fury, and accentuated with the GT Performance package including ebony black painted aluminum wheels. Add the deafening gallop of 460 horses under the hood, a user-friendly interface with voice-activated touchscreen, 12-speaker Shaker Pro audio system, a performance wing, and every sports car enthusiast’s dream—six-speed manual—and there’s virtually nothing left to be desired. The wallet-friendly starting price of $39K makes this iconic brand even more attractive. This year, look out for the return of the legendary Bullitt edition and gorgeous California Special packages becoming available once again. Price: $39,095 (MSRP); $52,360 with all options For more information, visit Ford.com . KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR…
THE 2019 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL Last year’s prestigious Black Label review model presented one of the most spacious back seats in its class, a load of amenities to pamper passengers including massagers in all four seats, a library-quiet cabin, 3.0-liter GTDI V-6 engine, and AWD for optimal maneuverability; its highly lauded “Reserve “ trim promises to have the Technology Package coming as a standard feature in 2019. The 80th Continental edition has mouths watering with the revival of yesteryear’s center-opening coach doors as well.
THE 2019 BUICK ENCORE ESSENCE Subcompact crossovers were immensely popular in 2018, and Buick Encore was one of the standouts for this segment. In 2019, the Essence trim comes with a more powerful 1.4-liter turbo engine, a plethora of safety and technology features along with the standard WiFi, heated front seats, remote start, and a Bose premium sound system to name a few enhancements. Breathe Deep IT’S TAX TIME
WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING NOW RIGHT NOW TO GET READY FOR A SEAMLESS TAX SEASON? January is the time for planning, gathering and organizing for a smooth tax season. We asked our friends at Davis & Langford CPA of Johns Creek to hold our hand as we start our planning. Attention in January is more important than ever given the changes brought about by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) and the revised “postcard” sized 1040 forms. Here's their advice:
18
Johns Creek Lifestyle | February 2019
PL ANNING
Planning – Planning that results in tax savings has all been completed by December 31, 2018. Your final estimated tax payment was due January 15, 2019. Now we are planning the actual preparation process. Some of the questions you should be considering:
+ Who will prepare the 2018 tax return? When large changes occur, many self-preparers choose to use a paid preparer. For 2018, it’s a good time to consider doing this even if you have always prepared your return in the past. The law changed dramatically, and the forms changed, too. It will not be as simple as doing what you did last year.
+ What changed from last year in your own situation? New job, started a business, retired, invested in more sophisticated investments like public limited partnerships – these changes may impact the timing of when you can file by when all information will be available.
+ Prepare a checklist of information you used in 2017 to help you track what you need for 2018.
GATHERING
Gathering – Most information returns must be reported to you and the IRS by January
31, 2019. You will need to be monitoring the incoming mail for Forms W-2, 1099, and 1098. Charities also send out annual statements during this time. Your stockbroker is not required to send their consolidated 1099 forms until mid-February. The broker forms are often revised so you should check last year’s forms to see if this happened. Use a large envelope available where you sort and open your mail. Put the tax documents in right away. If you receive them electronically, then use a central folder on your computer to accumulate the documents.
ORGANIZING
Organizing – If you have been diligent in planning and gathering, the organizing process
will go quickly. At the end of January, you should compare the documentation received to the checklist you put together. Follow up on missing information and you are ready to begin preparing your return. Don’t start the return until you are comfortable that you have all the required information. Piecemeal tax preparation is an invitation for an IRS notice or a high tax preparation bill
MEET THE TEAM
Three things set us apart from other firms in North Fulton.
+ We have unique experience to serve businesses and individuals. Our partners have real world business experience from startups to Fortune 500 and Big 4. Most local CPAs have always been practitioners and cannot appreciate the real world of business decision making. + Our firm is large enough that you are not dependent upon one person to get your answer and small enough that every family or business is important, regardless of size. From the beginning, our mission has been to build lasting relationships with our clients. + Finally, we approach our business as a community service. We solve people’s problems. We educate our clients. If a customer does not understand the result of their tax return or accounting, we take the time to explain. The partners believe our calling is to help others in our community. Davis & Langford CPA, 678.889.9548, JohnsCreekCPA.com

IS THERE EVER SUCH A THING AS A QUICK TRIP TO PARIS? IF I ONLY HAD THREE DAYS... ARTICLE NANCY FLAHERTY, GRACEINPARIS.COM PHOTOGRAPHY LAUREN TURNER
WHEN TRAVELING TO FRANCE, I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STAY IN DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOODS AND DURING EACH VISIT I ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING NEW ABOUT PARIS. If you only have three days, here are my suggestions for a memorable trip.
Day One Most flights from the U.S. leave in the evening and land in the morning in Paris. Staying in a boutique hotel is my choice. Le Dokhan, in the Trocadero district with its Louis Vuitton elevator (arguably one of the most Instagrammed in the world) has a lovely salon style bar for evening cocktails. Hotel JoBo in Le Marias is also a favorite, with rooms decorated in the style that Josephine Bonaparte would have adored. Hôtel D’Aubusson in Saint Germain-des-pres, with its jazz club in the lobby has lovely guest suites. Getting around in Paris is so easy when you have a digital map in your hands. Using Google Maps to find directions, I love to ride the metro like a local - je ne sais quois attitude is not required but it is fun to pretend. A good strong café crème and a croissant at any outdoor cafe is perfection for beginning the day. This allows me to sit and people watch – one of my very favorite 28

pastimes in any big city, but especially Paris. My favorite is Le Nemours in the area known as Palais-Royal. It sits right on a square between the Musée du Louvre and Palais Royal Gardens. In Saint Germain-des-pres, on the main avenue there is Café de Flore or Les Deux Magots. Whichever neighborhood you land in, take some time the first afternoon to get to know the lay of the land. All of the neighborhood streets in Paris can meander from district to district – go ahead and get lost in the architecture and feel of the city. Be sure to look for the Eiffel Tower above the rooftops – it’s always a pleasant surprise to me when I see the grand iron lady peeking from above to greet me and encourage me on my adventure. I take thousands of pictures of places I want to come back to on my wanderings. Window pictures are my favorite memories of Paris. Have an early dinner, perhaps a bowl of onion soup, and do not skip the baguette!

Day Two On day two, the Musée du Lourve is a wonderful place to get lost, but with only three days, I would be very specific in choosing which galleries to visit. If you are desperate to see the Mona Lisa, get to the museum before opening to secure a place early in line. The museum at Foundation Louis Vuitton is a treasure of a building with a restaurant (sit at the bar and enjoy a cocktail) and the roof-top terrace with views of Paris is not to be missed. The Yves Saint Laurent museum is a treat for fashion historians with Monsieur’s office perfectly preserved, just as if he were expected at any moment for a couture appointment with a social maven needing a gown for her next charity event. Walking around the districts, there are quite a few boutiques to explore. Be sure to go in and see the ones that you would not find at home, most are owned by interesting people with lovely stories of how they became shopkeepers. A heartfelt “Bon jour, Madame” is always appropriate no matter what level of French you are comfortable with. Shopping in Saint Germaindes-pres is like Main St. USA - Parisian style. The boutiques, vendors, and coffee shops are amazing to wander in and out. Eléonore Emaldi’s current fashions, with her beautiful choice of fabrics, are precious. Le 3 Marche is museum-like for vintage Chanel or Hermes. You might meet the designers or someone of note in any one of these boutiques. 30

Day Three Day three can begin at the YSL museum, and Avenue Montagne for window shopping is a great place for a stroll. I adore having lunch on the terrace of Le Avenue for a lobster club sandwich and of course pommes frites; enjoying a glass of champagne to toast the day is a must. The Trocadero district, with its view of the Eiffel tower is also a wonderful place for lunch. Café Carette has the best macaroons in Paris. A walk to Rue de la Pompe's resale and vintage shops is essential. You can find treasures here for reasonable prices if you are willing to take the time to look. There are so many places to dine in Paris. For a special treat if the weather is nice, head to Le Bristol for lunch in the garden. Brunch at Claus or Trieze au Jardin are a trendy treat, and Trieze is owned by a Southern belle from Charleston – be prepared for biscuits Parisian style. In the evenings, the Cristal Room at Musée Baccarat shines bright, Bistrot du Sommelier offers a dinner with wine pairings for each delectable course, or the beautiful La Librairie in Place Chopin where you dine surrounded by books are three of my favorites. I keep a diary of my visits to Paris. My book is full of notes and anecdotes of my time in this beautiful city with my friends. We have created memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.

GIVING BACK
“IT’S IMPORTANT TO DEFINE THE ECONOMIC WORKINGS OF A MARRIAGE, TO PROTECT ASSETS AS WELL AS OUTLINE THE NON-FINANCIAL TERMS,” SAYS BRENNER.
ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY AUBRY CANALES
Prenups, not Presumptions BRENNER STUDIES THE BUSINESS OF LOVE EMILY BRENNER BELIEVES THE BEST TIME TO TALK ABOUT THE END OF A MARRIAGE IS AT THE BEGINNING OF A MARRIAGE. Couples in love should lay it all on the table, discuss who gets what, and the intricacies like how they will raise the kids, manage bills and what she calls “the analogue for living together.” “One person may be in a marriage that looks like his parents and one might be in a marriage from a magazine,” says Ms. Brenner, the unflinching founder of Brenner Law Group, with offices in Roswell. “It’s best to talk about expectations and consequences when you’re happy, not during such an intense time of your life.” Brenner has been practicing law for 35 years, helping couples before they separate, and helping navigate the many tribulations and tributaries of divorce if the time comes. She has a unique perspective, not only as a successful divorcee, but also a licensed counseling psychologist and ordained rabbi. And, while she brings a thoroughly thoughtful perspective to the table, she is also a fierce negotiator and bulldog of a litigator. 34
Johns Creek Lifestyle | February 2019
All of these skills are tapped when helping a couple write a prenuptial contract. “There was once a time when our families were tribes and marriage was a business deal, with a contract,” says Brenner. Now, couples are expected to leap from love to the business of marriage with little or no discussion of (or guidance in) the nuts and bolts of running a household, family or relationship. “It’s important to define the economic workings of a marriage, to protect assets as well as outline the non-financial terms,” says Brenner. “Talk about kids, those already in the family from different marriages, and those yet to be born. Protect them.” She notes that custody and child support can only be decided by the court at the time of divorce. “But, think about these relationships.” In our society, she says, we focus on the rights of empowered adults and don’t always look at children as members of our “dysfunctional tribe.” It’s this tribe that Brenner loves to dissect and protect. The typical family unit is changing, and a prenup will buoy a couple and all their dysfunction in divorce. To write a prenup, the couple shares a list of their assets. “There is no boilerplate. The contract is flexible, negotiable and we write it together.” She has included pet custody in prenups and sees a trend toward including a health declaration (STD free or not?) as a part of the contract. “It’s a PrenupUP - there are many new ideas for couples to consider,” says Brenner whose firm bills hourly and suggests everyone review any contract (including the prenup that she helps write) with his/her own attorney before signing. “We have a hard time thinking about the business aspect of marriage. We are supposed to believe love conquers all and that money doesn’t enter the equation. But so many of divorces are rooted in money politics,” says Brenner. Already on board with a reassuring prenup on file? Note that with changes in 2019 tax laws, alimony is no longer deductible, so you may want to adjust any figures in your contract. Happily married with wills, pensions, insurance policies in place? Brenner says you might want to look at drawing up a postnup to create your own analog for the rest of your days together. “I’ve had clients who want to define their financial relationship decades into marriage. Retirement brings new decisions and realities,” she says. BrennerLawGroup.com 404.751.8868 555 Sun Valley Drive Suite N-4 Roswell, GA 30076 February 2019 | Johns Creek Lifestyle
