16 year old Timothy, (center) who received our 50th heart transplant with members of his family and care team.

Elia, who is cancer-free, and her mom, Melanie

I’m Cancer-Free! My stomach pains weren’t just tummy aches. I had cancer. A tumor called a Wilms tumor in my right kidney. It got so big that it was close to my heart. Too close to take it out with surgery. They did lots of chemotherapy to shrink it so they could take it out. Now I’m cancer-free. Joe DiMaggio made this happen. At first I felt scared, but there’s friends all around Joe DiMaggio. They make you feel special. It helped me. My mom says it helped her to not worry so much, and that we were in the best hands possible.

ne of the hard truths of entertainment in the 21st century is that people will do anything to snag their 15 minutes of fame on reality television—dignity, be damned. They will exchange vows with someone they’ve never spoken to or seen (Married at First Sight). They’ll volunteer for a 21-day survival test in extreme outdoor conditions with a stranger of the opposite sex—and neither of them are clothed (Naked and Afraid). They will choke down concoctions so vile—smoothies blended with dead rats, cow snout and cheese covered in maggots—that a viewer once sued the network because just watching one of these disgusting displays made him vomit and run into a wall (thank you, Fear Factor). Parents once even pimped out their young children for a voyeuristic Lord of the Flies experiment (remember Kid Nation, the train wreck where one youngster beheaded chickens—in just the second episode?). Perhaps, that’s what makes Lee Rosbach such a reality TV anomaly. He never auditioned for his role on Bravo’s Below Deck. He didn’t mug for the camera, purposely play the villain, or go out of his way to seek a starring role. Captain Lee simply did his job. It didn’t hurt that the good captain runs his luxury yachts with old-school Midwestern values (and sayings). Or that he doesn’t suffer reality TV fools. Or that he comes off like a grouchy grandpa at times. Or that underneath that perfectly pressed white shirt is the physique of a man half his age (they don’t call the 71-year-old Rosbach the “stud of the sea” for nothing). America loves it. And loves him. Indeed, Captain Lee has done his job so well that Below Deck finished 2020 as Bravo’s top-rated show—even beating out the venerable Housewives franchise. With the Emmy-nominated series about to embark on its ninth season later this month (Oct. 25), Lifestyle felt the time was right to reconnect with Rosbach. Much has happened since the magazine first wrote about the Fort Lauderdale resident early in the show’s run. As always, Captain Lee couldn’t have been more gracious with his time, or more candid about how his life has changed—for better and, in one tragic case, for worse—over the past several years. You’ll learn all about his fascinating journey in an October edition of Lifestyle dedicated to Men of Influence throughout South Florida. Enjoy the issue.

Don’t Wait Get Your Mammogram Safely With Memorial As someone with a family history of breast cancer, and as a member of the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners that oversees Memorial Healthcare System, I am typically busy in October — National Breast Cancer Awareness Month — helping to spread the word about breast cancer and the importance of breast self-awareness and getting screened. While breast cancer awareness activities look different again this year, early detection is as important as ever. As the pandemic continues, I encourage you to be vigilant. Your mammogram should not wait. Screenings are safe at Memorial Healthcare System thanks to the COVID-19 vaccine and continuing the extra safety precautions that were put in place, including: COVID-19 screenings, physical distancing, enhanced cleaning and disinfecting, appointment spacing, personal protective equipment and face masks required for everyone. Each year, more than 300,000 women — one in eight in the U.S. — will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 3,000 men will, too. The good news for all of us in South Florida is that Memorial Healthcare System and Memorial Cancer Institute offer the kinds of diagnostic services that make early detection of breast cancer easier. Coming in 2023 is a new freestanding Cancer Institute on the campus of Memorial Hospital West. We will have an entire floor exclusively devoted to breast oncology and will offer patients all the services they need under one roof, from diagnosis through treatment to survivorship. This approach works together with the wide range of rehabilitation and supportive care Memorial provides to help stronger against breast cancer. 56 patients OCTOBERbe 2021 | LMGFL.COM

Our leading-edge 3D mammography technology and our “one-stop shop,” 3D Stereotactic Tomosynthesis Breast Biopsy System mean that patients no longer need to schedule follow-ups and wait days for results. Our highly experienced team of specialized radiologists is dedicated to reading only mammograms and breast imaging. Our outstanding team of medical, surgical and radiation oncologists helps identify individualized treatment options for each patient. Through our Office of Human Research, Memorial strives to offer each patient who would like it the opportunity to participate in a potentially groundbreaking research study or clinical trial. And it’s all here in South Florida. Thanks to the resources of Memorial Healthcare System, you don’t need to go anywhere else to access outstanding breast cancer diagnostic care, treatment and support services. It’s safe and it’s in our own backyard. For more information on Memorial Cancer Institute, call 954-265-4325 (HEAL) or to schedule a 3D mammogram, visit MHS.net/Mammogram.

HELPING HANDS Businesses, organizations and individuals throughout South Florida continue to make a difference in their communities and raise awareness on a variety of fronts. The following photos represent just some of those efforts. Rick Case Bikes for Kids: The 39th year of the program kicks off its annual collection this month (and runs through Dec. 20). The initiative launched by Rita and Rick Case has provided some 125,000 bikes since 1982. Bikes will be distributed through area Boys & Girls Clubs, and other charities, churches and schools. Drop off a bike in good condition at any Rick Case Automotive Group location.

1.

Achievement Centers for Children & Families: The organization that provides good-quality and affordable early learning and family support programs received a $10,000 grant from the Schmidt Family Foundation. During COVID-19, ACCF provided financial assistance to 70 families struggling to pay rent and bills; it also distributed some 243,000 meals to those in need.

2.

Lighthouse of Broward: A back-to-school event provided an array of supplies (backpacks, binders, glue sticks, crayons) for more than 85 blind or visually impaired youth who participate in Lighthouse’s children’s program. The event, hosted by the Museum of Discovery and Science, also included STEM activities, snow cones, lunch, and more.

Dunn’s Run: The 25th annual event along the ocean in Deerfield Beach, dedicated this year to Jim Dunn, the late owner of J.R. Dunn Jewelers (and founder of the run), was slated for early October. Over the years, the 5K run/walk has raised more than $3.5 million for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County.

4.

Community Foundation of Broward: Former Miami Dolphins linebacker and fast-casual restaurateur John Offerdahl partnered with the foundation to deliver more than 2,000 packaged lunches to “Hidden Heroes” at hospitals operated by Broward Health, Memorial Healthcare, Baptist Health, and Holy Cross Hospital.

LET THE BIDDING BEGIN

The era of must-see TV in the 1980s and ’90s—back when networks packed their Thursday night schedules with ratings juggernauts—had passed when Joseph Ladin (pictured, right) launched SFLMaven nearly 20 years ago. But the idea piqued his interest. His fledgling fine jewelry/accessories storefront on eBay needed a hook—and a Thursday night auction, with bidding for premium pieces, felt like a novel e-commerce concept. Little did the graduate of the University of Florida know that it would become the cornerstone of a Fort Lauderdale-based company, now public, that typically does some $1 million in monthly gross sales. “We took a chance and stayed committed,” Ladin says of the auction events that, on their own, will produce upward of $200,000 in one-night sales. “We’ve now done [more than] 900 weekly auctions. We have a huge customer following that counts on us not only for their fine jewelry, but also for their Thursday night entertainment.” SFLMaven’s loyal clientele (the company has “top-rated seller” status on eBay and nearly 100,000 positive feedbacks) is driving a seemingly pandemic-proof business model. Mid-year financials for SFLMaven showed a 14% total sales increase compared to the first six months of 2020—and a year-over-year gross profits increase of 194%. But it’s not just the Thursday fun. It’s the fact that customers are paying for what luxury and estate pieces are actually worth, compared to the marked-up pricing at a brick-and-mortar jewelry store. In addition, SFLMaven folds a money-back guarantee into transactions to the protect the buyer. “Everything is fully transparent,” Ladin says. “A customer can see great past feedbacks from other customers, our photos are raw and untouched, and our descriptions are to the point. It’s exciting to see what people like and what items go into a bidding frenzy. I’m always surprised by what resonates most with people, and I’ve been doing this a long time.” Visit sflmavencorp.com (which has a link to the eBay store) to learn more.

A MARINE SCENE LIKE NO OTHER After exceeding expectations last year during the high tide of COVID-19, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) returns in full force for its 62nd edition. Bahia Mar Yachting Center (801 Seabreeze Blvd.) will serve as home base from Oct. 27-31 for an exhibition—owned by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida and produced by Informa Markets—that features more world and U.S. debuts of products, accessories and luxury vessels than any boat show in the country. “The marine industry has been fortunate to experience unprecedented success over the last year,” says Phil Purcell, CEO/president of the MIASF. “Area manufacturers, brokers and marine service professionals whose businesses impact the local economy all year will be joined by their global counterparts showcasing the best products and services the industry has to offer.” The largest in-water showcase for boats and marine exhibits—which generated $714 million in products sold during the 2019 event, part of a $1.3 billion economic impact for the state— has plenty in store during its five-day run. Among the highlights: • Superyacht Village: An unmatched collection of superyachts and exhibits will be on display, including personal submarines and exotic collectible automotive items. • Windward VIP Club: This exclusive indoor/outdoor destination boasts shore and water views of all the festivities, not to mention premium open bar and gourmet food offerings. • AquaZone: This engaging attraction is designed to give showgoers a personal experience with a variety of water sports and innovative marine products. • Hook the Future: Capt. Don Dingman hosts interactive fishing clinics for children (ages 4 to 16). One-day general admission tickets are $37; two-day GA tickets go for $63. Visit flibs.com/en/attend/tickets.html for show information and AllSecure standards.

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND In creating the latest in its run of rarefied and iconic collections, Tiffany & Co. turned to its own backyard for inspiration. The Tiffany Knot is a tip of the cap to its hometown of New York City and an architectural symbol straight from the streets—the chain-link. “Mastering the art of ‘making it’ in New York demands a strong sense of self and a certain state of mind,” notes the company’s release announcing the launch. “This is the spirit behind Tiffany Knot. It is subversive and audacious, worn as both a statement of rebellion and a talisman of connection: connections with those who ‘know’ and a connection with New York itself.” In layman’s terms, that means a striking array of bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants and earrings (created with 18-karat yellow and rose gold) with the signature graphic knot motif, including a double-wrap choker that’s handset with more than 300 diamonds. Tiffany & Co. stores in Boca Raton, Aventura, Bal Harbour, Coral Gables, and Miami are carrying the collection. (tiffany.com)

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Events and information related to breast cancer initiatives throughout South Florida • MEMORIAL CANCER INSTITUTE: One of the state’s largest cancer programs offers an array of supportive services throughout the stages of treatment and recovery. Among them: scalp cooling therapy (to prevent hair loss) for select chemotherapy regimens and diagnoses; integrative therapies, including acupuncture, to ease side effects; and an Image Recovery Program with personalized services for patients adjusting to the physical and emotional changes they may experience. (mhs.net/services/cancer) • NOT MY DAUGHTER … FIND A CURE NOW! The Parkland/Coral Springs coalition of volunteers that raises money for its ongoing battle against breast cancer will stage a virtual telethon on Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, PAP Corps and other cancer research-based organizations. To view the telethon feed, check out the organization’s Facebook page; to donate, visit notmydaughter.org. • HOLY CROSS CANCER RESEARCH INSTITUTE: In its standing as an NCORP site (a program of the National Cancer Institute), the institute at Holy Cross can offer innovative therapies to cancer patients before they become standard in the community. Among its recent studies involving breast cancer is one that incorporates the drug MEN1611. There’s a protein in your body, PI3K, that’s altered in breast cancer tissue, causing cancer cells to grow and multiply. The MEN1611 drug slows down or stops the growth of those cells by blocking the PI3K protein. (holy-cross.com/find-a-service-or-specialty/cancer-care) • LEGENDS TAVERN AND GRILLE: The gastropub is teaming up with Glam-a-Thon—the fashionable breast cancer charity that helps underserved patients of Broward Health—to raise funds for the nonprofit. Legends locations in Plantation, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Sunrise and Lighthouse Point will serve a Strawberry Whitney cocktail (with Pink Whitney vodka, strawberry syrup and ginger ale); a portion of proceeds will benefit Glam-a-Thon. (legendstavernandgrille.com; glam-a-thon.com) • CLEVELAND CLINIC WESTON: The recently opened Lozick Women’s Center offers screenings, diagnosis and treatment for patients with breast cancer and breast illness. Local blogger and breast cancer awareness advocate Ginger Harris notes that the Lozick Center goes above and beyond in its offerings. “They also [take] a holistic approach to medical care … As part of the treatment process, patients can partake in various complimentary medicine services such as art therapy, yoga and even a wig boutique.” (my.clevelandclinic.org/florida)

ADRIAN ARCHIE FOUNDER/CEO PETNMIND NATURALS & SELF-WASH 6578 N. State Rd 7, Coconut Creek, FL 33073 954-420-1122 | www.petnmind.com | www.buyapetfranchise.com

Do you have any unique habits that you feel contribute to your success? I am a learner at the core. I have experienced a lot of change in my life. My passion for learning new things has always carried me through those transitions. Essentially, I learn my way past the fear and uncertainty of change and lofty goals. At some point you step back to take stock of your progress and realize that what you feared was conquered simply by focusing on learning every day.

Did you plan your career or stumble on it? Growing up I had the goal of becoming a veterinarian and owning a pet store. I worked at vet’s offices and even began college as a pre-vet major. After much success in football and Corporate America my passion for animals never faded. After a decade in medical device sales, I started to feel stifled. I organically arrived at this juncture by utilizing the skills I developed working with animals as well as excelling in athletics and business. I took the scenic route, but it all makes sense.

What are your intrinsic motivations? I find the most satisfaction in being a part of other people’s success. That is why I created a pet concept that others can franchise and experience business success as well as freedom. I find life as an entrepreneur to be unpredictable. It is in those times that helping and being excited for others fuels me. I feed off the positive emotion of witnessing their success and it often becomes a bridge on the days I don’t feel so great mentally.

What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? I started petNmind from scratch with absolutely no knowledge of how to run a pet retail and service business. To still be standing here at year 7, through COVID-19, with a viable brand that is poised to grow and change lives along the way by helping others create a business legacy from the fruits of the Pet Industry is awesome.

JAMES H. BATMASIAN INVESTMENTS LIMITED Boca Raton, Florida What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? Staying together with my wife for almost 50 years, raising two boys (and now three absolutely wonderful grandchildren), all with Christian values, and being blessed with being able to live and work in the same community together. Who was your inspiration and role model? My Mom and Dad and then, when they passed away, Jesus Christ. What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? I think we all need to use all the talents that God gave us, for His glory, to be His hands and feet on this earth, and to do the best we can in everything we attempt. I’ve worked very hard to be successful in the business world, and I very much enjoy what I do. I enjoy even more the fact that the business success allows me to give back to people in need…so many people in so many ways.

What a great pleasure to be able to do both simultaneously! What charities are you involved in and why? Although we have a 2-page typewritten list of all the charities we are helping, there are two that I am most passionate about. The first is PROPEL (People Reaching Out to Provide Education and Leadership), which I started 22 years ago and which helps underprivileged children succeed. The second is Changing Lives, which helps those who are homeless and less fortunate get clean, sober, and obtain productive jobs, housing, and even reunite with their estranged families. My goal now is to expand those two charities throughout the country. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? I’m not insecure, but I believe I am humble. I’m a raving fan of the Good Samaritan. LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

DR. ABEL E. BELLO, MD, FACS, FASMBS MIB SURGERY 201 NW 70th Avenue, Suite C, Plantation, FL 33317 954-249-3950 | www.drabelbello.com What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? My beautiful family is the most precious accomplishment that I could have wished for. Having my wife my two beautiful kids make me feel realized and gives me a sense of satisfaction by fulfilling one of the most basic nature and life purposes. They also complement me in such a diverse world and give me a purpose to keep facing any challenges of the present and future. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? Professionally, we have dedicated all our time and effort to offer our fellow patient’s the most compassionate and selfless care we can possibly do. We are involved in an ever-changing process to cultivate the knowledge and expertise that would help change people’s life. This is truer to the Bariatric and Weight loss surgery arena. As an example of this, we have innovated in the field of weight loss procedures by creating our own version of a nonsurgical procedure which we have named DUO Procedure. It is a non-surgical and ambulatory procedure that is revolutionizing

74

OCTOBER 2021 | LMGFL.COM

the weight loss filed and helping hundreds of patients with overweight and obesity regain control of their lives. The procedure is performed by strategically placing a set of sutures inside the stomach which will give the patient a sensation of fullness and control of hunger in a very predictable way, while allowing them to continue to carry on their daily routines with almost no interruption. We offer all surgical and non-surgical weight loss solutions as part of our continued effort to improve people’s life. What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? Nothing comes without a sacrifice. I come from very humble beginning in a rural area of the Dominican Republic and grew up in a world of adversities constantly taking down barriers at every step of my development. To this day, I still continue defeating obstacles along the way. So, simply, never stop! Always focus your efforts of doing better, helping others, learn to gain satisfaction when you see others do well and always continue to create a better version of you. Stay humble, stay true!

DR. STEVE CHESS CANDIDATE, U.S. HOUSE FLORIDA DISTRICT 22 WWW.CHESSFORCONGRESS.COM What would you like our readers to know about you? I am not a politician. I am a native Floridian and a licensed physician. My proudest titles are that of husband, father, grandfather, and Army veteran. For the last 50 years I was registered as a Democrat. Now I am running for office as a Republican. Currently, the Republican Party better aligns with my belief and aspirations. No, things are not perfect, but we have come a long way and the journey is not completed. The greatest challenges we face are the hate and divisions fashioned by our politician and big media. We need to “live the word” and let the Ten Commandments govern our everyday activities. Who were your inspirations and role models? I have always respected the person and, until recently, party affiliation never came into play. It was very difficult for me to see the desecration of monuments of Washington, Lincoln and others who played a role in our history. The first event that impacted me greatly was the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Afterward, so much

of our large Cuban population escaped Castro’s Communist regime. Ask them how they feel about the socialistic views of Bernie Sanders and the Squad? How did we go from peaceful protests led by Dr. Martin Luther King to the violent marches we witnessed in our streets in 2020? What advice would you give others looking to make a difference? I love America . I am just an ordinary citizen. I would gratefully sacrifice my life to uphold our Constitution and our Bill of Rights. My advice is to be fearless and express how you feel in this counter- culture society. Everyone knows what is going to happen to women, children, and anyone that does not adhere to the dictates of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Remind everyone, that could be you and your family if things don’t change in congress. I am heartbroken. Understand where there is no law there is no freedom. Live your life with passion and always stand up for what you know is right. Silence is deadly. LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

CONOR P. DELANEY, MD, PHD CEO & PRESIDENT CLEVELAND CLINIC FLORIDA 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd., Weston, FL 33331 www.clevelandclinicflorida.org What advice would you give to other people looking to make a difference? First is to aspire to excellence. Seeking continuous improvement in yourself, be it within your career or personal passion, will allow you to have a positive impact on those around you. Secondly, by helping others build teams that work toward a common goal, you can magnify your impact. Cleveland Clinic demonstrates this principle through our “team of teams” approach for caring for patients and the communities we serve. What charities are you involved in and why? I’ve admired the work of the United Way for many years. At the end of the day, their mission is to care for communities, a goal we share at Cleveland Clinic. I am also very active in surgical societies, which play a vital role in advancing medical care and the life-long learning medicine demands. For example, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery, a society for which I am currently President-elect, has made significant contributions to the dissemination of innovative surgical techniques and the means of

76

improving care for patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal conditions. Who was your inspiration and role model? I’ve been fortunate to have outstanding role models throughout my career, including my parents and mentors in the field of colorectal surgery. My father, Dr. Peter V. Delaney, was a colorectal surgeon and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His love of surgery and its ability to help others led me to this field, and he taught me to take on responsibility and serve others. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? Our mission at Cleveland Clinic is to care for life, research for health, and educate those who serve. I support that mission by empowering our caregivers to deliver better care and better access to care to our communities. On a personal level, as a physician, I strive to connect with patients and learn about their families and support networks so that I can provide better care.

DENIZ DUYGULU & CARLTON WASHINGTON 4EVER YOUNG ANTI-AGING SOLUTIONS 4EverYoungAntiAging.com | IG @DenizDuygulu | @carlton_washington_ Deniz Duygulu What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? One of my most proud accomplishments in business is just being able to see 4Ever Young and its growth. Statistically most small businesses fail in the first 2-3 years, so to be able to say we are still here, still growing and have others believing in us and following our process and becoming franchisees is a blessing I will never take for granted. We have had many ups and downs over the last seven years but having the ‘never give up” mentality and always working towards improving our center and our process has kept us hungry and wanting to push even more! What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? Follow your passion!!! Having passion for what you do will give you more fuel and motivation than any monetary or material rewards. Many years ago, I was in a job I didn’t like and a friend said to me, what would you do if money didn’t matter, I gave it some thought and I followed that, and now I get to work in what thrives my passion every day, helping others be the best versions of themselves. My passion for what we do at 4Ever Young drives me to be the best we can be in every aspect of our business which

brings all the other rewards that most people chase when they work to just earn them. I am proof that if you work hard and follow your passion, the other stuff will follow. Carlton Washington What Charities are you involved in and why? Currently, I serve as a board member with Kids In Distress as well as a part of the Boys & Girls Club Hall Society. The legitimacy and transparency is a large reason as to why I chose to be a part of both of these organizations. To me, it is not just about sending donations, with both organizations, I actually take the time to show up, volunteer my time and energy and you can see the direct impact of the investment in these children’s lives. What is one fact that you would like our readers to know about you? I like for people to know the “why”. I am a 1st generation entrepreneur / business owner and it’s something I wear with a great deal of pride. My reason for doing this is to prove that it can be done without coming from a privileged background with the ultimate goal being to build a legacy for my family while providing them a role model for success! HOWARD DVORKIN CPA, CHAIRMAN DEBT.COM What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? I’m most proud of launching several organizations that have propelled Americans, Canadians, and Brits out of personal debt and into better financial circumstances. I find the most pleasure in watching people from all walks of life who work for us realize the opportunities available to them - then watching them excel. There is nothing greater than to see than someone who started entry level and 20 years later, watching them run a division, grow their families, send their kids to college and enjoying a wonderful life and knowing that you were part of that. I’ve been blessed with personal success while helping others find their personal success. That my friends is success. What is the best advice you have ever received? And who gave you that advice? In 1992, when I was on the eve of launching my first major business, I spoke with Andrew Weisman. We were roommates in graduate school, and he is President of NuVision Management, which I’ve long admired for its leadership. All those years ago,

78

OCTOBER 2021 | LMGFL.COM

Andrew told me, “Don’t wait for someone to give you a break. Make your own breaks.” Sounded simple, so I ran with that advice, and I’ve never looked back. What charities are you involved in and why? For over 20 years, we have quietly distributed millions of dollars to organizations focusing on mental health and feeding the poor. I am most proud of the charity I created - Parkland Cares, which launched within days of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shootings. It immediately began supporting mental health counseling for victims, their families, and the community. Best of all, Parkland Cares is still doing that. That violence has faded from the headlines, but the memories haven’t. I am also an avid supporter of Jewish charities, specifically the Jewish Federation of Broward County. Few do that better than the 148 Jewish Federations around the country. They have all done amazing work dating back to the 1800s. They make it so easy to support them as most of the funds that we donate end up supporting the organizations that are near and dear to my heart.

What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? First, I am a father and stepfather to three incredible, extraordinary children. My single greatest accomplishment is to know that I have provided each of them with every possible tool to succeed in not only business but more importantly, life itself. It’s a very difficult world out there and young people in general are really going to have a difficult time balancing all the world seems to be throwing at them. I have prided myself on giving all three of my children the love, knowledge, and support to propel them to succeed in whatever it is they choose to do in their lives. I have instilled in them my personal mottos: Always strive to be the best at whatever you do and Character is tested when you are up against it. What advice would you give to others? I learned early in my career that relationships will dictate your journey. Shake hands, kiss babies and rub shoulders. You never know who you are going to meet or where that contact

or relationship may help you in the future. Do not be afraid to cultivate relationships in areas or with people outside of your comfort zone. It will not only make you a stronger person but open your eyes to all different walks of life. Embrace relationships with persons who motivate you to be your best. Finally, let young people know that the journey to success starts and ends with relationships. Surround yourself with winners and you too will be a winner. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? There is not a case too big or small or client that I won’t handle. I love a challenge and love to think out of the box to find a solution. Whether its competing in a tennis tournament or winning a case in which the facts were stacked against you, there is nothing more exhilarating than defying my own personal expectations. The words “cannot” and “lose” are not in my vocabulary. LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

CARLOS R. FERNANDEZ-GUZMAN PRESIDENT & CEO PACIFIC NATIONAL BANK 1390 Brickell Ave, Miami, FL 33131 cfernandez-guzman@pnb.com What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? I share it with my wife of 45 years. Raising children is the most difficult thing we do in life. To raise the child as the adult you want them to be is not easy. We are blessed with children that are properly grounded, successful when measured by their accomplishments, and exemplary parents to our grandchildren. We are proud of their principles, faith, and the deep friendships they have cultivated throughout their life that have shaped the loving, dedicated and passionate adults they turned out to be. Who was your inspiration and role model? My Mother, she left Cuba with a 9-year-old in tow and not a penny to her name. Upon Arrival in Miami, she accepted no assistance whatsoever. Would often say “We came to this Country not to be a burden, but to add value” and add value she did. She found a job, rented an efficiency, and went on to build a successful and fulfilling life in the US despite never being able to practice Law again. Whenever I find myself complaining about this or that, I think of the trials and tribulations she faced and quickly conclude that I have no right to complain!

What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? Lead with passion, do not settle for 90% efforts, demand of yourself a higher standard than you demand of others. To quote Simon Sinek, “Leadership is the responsibility to see those around us rise. It’s not about being in charge, it’s about taking care of those in your charge.” What charities are you involved in and why? Chapman Partnership. Embraced Alvah and Betty Chapman’s vision on how to eradicate homelessness. CP takes no shortcuts in helping the homeless reintegrate to society as self-sufficient, men and women by helping them find the way back to focusing on opportunities for a better life as opposed to the unfortunate incidents that led them to homelessness. Their > 67% success rate and low teens recidivism rate are best in class benchmarks of a highly successful national model. The ROI for time and treasure at CP immeasurable.

BEN HARROW PRESIDENT PAM JETS 3300 Airport Road, Boca Raton, FL 33431 818-332-3030 | www.pamjets.com What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? I helped create an aircraft management company from scratch as an outsider of this industry. The co-founders understood my leadership and operational background, my professional potential, and knew if they were to truly create something different, they needed someone like myself that views our business through a different lens. My background as a combat experienced Special Forces commander has been crucial in our success as a business.

What charities are you involved in and why? I’m actively involved with the Yellow Ribbon Fund, where my wife is the Executive Director. YRF supports post 9-11 ill and injured service members and their families. When you leave the hospital, the support system you had at the hospital stays at the hospital. That responsibility now rests on the shoulders of the caregivers and families. YRF is there to help support the service members and their caregivers in all their needs.

What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? The only critic that counts is the man in the mirror. If you believe in what you’re doing, trust in the process and the results.

What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? After losing both of my legs to an IED in Afghanistan, I was told by the doctors and therapists that I would spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. I refused to accept that diagnosis and proved them wrong. I discovered a process to regrow my femur, allowing me to wear prosthetics and walk again. At the end of an 11-month process, I set a medical world record for the most bone regenerated by regrowing five and half inches of bone.

Who was your inspiration and role model? My inspiration is my end-state. When all is said and done, it is where I want to be professionally and personally. Everyday I’m improving myself and my business to achieve my end-state.

At age 16, I started bussing tables at TGIF in Boston. The time spent there gave me the opportunity to experience various positions. This is when I became intrigued with the industry and led me to Johnson & Wales in Rhode Island. While pursuing my degree in culinary arts and business administration, I worked at the Marriott in Boston as a chef as well as my internship at the Marriott Harbor Beach here in Fort Lauderdale. After years as an Executive Chef, I decided I wanted to own my business. Knowing South Florida’s booming market, I found an opportunity to launch Posh Lounge. 18 years later, we continue to be a place where customers enjoy lounging in our intimate setting and awardwinning sushi. What do you enjoy most of being a business owner? My passion to educate and mentor others gives me pleasure knowing that one day they may utilize their training to pursue a career in the restaurant/service industry. I also love the interaction with my customers and ensuring they receive the best

82

experience when they visit both Posh Lounge and Eve “on the water”. What has been the most challenging experience faced in your industry? After owning Posh for 4 years, the 2008 financial crisis impaired the industry drastically. It took a lot of contriving and sacrifice, but we survived. Last year, we acquired another restaurant, formally Asia Bay, 1 week before the pandemic. Using my past experience and a strong team we were able to rebrand and launch Eve. What advice would you give to others looking to become a successful entrepreneur? The recipe for success starts with picking the right ingredients. The most important ingredient is the willingness to work hard. Second ingredient is not being afraid of failure. It sounds cliché but failing is part of succeeding. Third and final is being hands on, involved and always present for your team.

WHO’S WHO MEN OF INFLUENCE

MATT LEVINSON CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER O&G PR mlevinson@oandgpr.com What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? I started at O&G PR in January 2000 (remember Y2K?) as an Account Executive, expecting to garner some agency experience and move on. Nearly 22 years later, I am proud to be COO of this thriving, successful firm that positively impacts so many local and national businesses. It hasn’t always been easy – from an economic downturn to a global pandemic – but I’ve been led by my strong work ethic and true passion for the industry. In PR, every day is different and we’re always learning something new. I believe that will keep me energized for the next two decades…and beyond. Who was your inspiration and role model? Growing up in Miami, I was an avid Dolphins fan and idolized Dan Marino. One of my prized possessions is a 1983 photo of Dan and me from a meet and greet event. Fast forward three decades, I had the great fortune of working closely with Dan opening numerous Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza restaurants across Florida

and the Northeast, including his hometown of Pittsburgh. (We handled the brand’s PR for 10 years and Dan was a long-time partner). Sometimes, meeting your heroes can be disappointing. That was not the case with Dan. He’s a gregarious and genuine guy who often made people’s day with a selfie and a quick hello. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? I started my career as the crime beat reporter at the nowdefunct Boca Raton News (yes, there’s crime in Boca). I learned more the first week there than I had in four years of college. And, throughout my time at the paper, I honed so many skills I use to this day – interviewing, writing, editing, planning, and meeting deadlines. I also have an innate curiosity for business, often warning new and prospective clients I ask a lot of questions – but it’s a vital trait for any successful communications career. I am simply fascinated by things others may find “boring.” LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

CHUCK LICHTMAN PARTNER BERGER SINGERMAN www.ChuckLichtman.com | chuck@chucklichtman.com What single accomplishment are you most proud of? In my business litigation law practice, I never focused on accomplishments, but rather, working hard and smart to achieve the best, cost-effective result for my clients. Still, representing the Receiver in the Scott Rothstein Ponzi scheme case stands out. My incredible team at Berger Singerman paid the victim creditors 100% of their loss, which had never been done before. But now, my second novel, The Sword of David stands out because it is extraordinarily difficult to get fiction picked up by a quality publisher and distributed nationally. I’m gratified by receiving excellent reviews by both professional reviewers and other novelists. For instance, New York Times #1 bestselling author Brad Meltzer said the book was a “breathtaking thriller,” and he and numerous other reviewers compared the book to The DaVinci Code and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Gotta like that!! Who was your inspiration and role model? I give credit to my success to my role model mentors who inspired and taught me in different ways. Men including my father,

84

Professor Cleve Wilhoit, basketball coach Bobby Knight, former Florida Attorney General Bob Shevin, entreprenuer Stanley Tate and Hearst Corp. CEO Bob Danzig each played major roles in my life for extended periods of time. I could write a book just on what I learned from them. What charities are you involved in and why? My mentors all urged me to give back to the community. I’ve done that by founding a national voter protection program that since 2002 unequivocally has assured that voters were able to vote and have their vote counted. Given the rise of anti-Semitism, I’m working hard to assure the Jewish community remains safe. I serve on the National Board of Directors of Secure Community Network, the security arm of the Jewish Federations of North America charged with assuring that every Jewish controlled building and our people remain safe. I also and sit on the board and executive committee of the South Palm Beach Jewish Federation and chair its Security Committee.

What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? My biggest accomplishment is my wife and I raising two amazing sons who chose to serve our country after graduating from college instead of pursuing more lucrative careers in the private sector. I couldn’t be prouder! What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? We can make a bigger difference in an individual’s life than we may realize. Encouraging someone to push themselves to reach their potential not only helps them achieve their goals, but also is extremely gratifying. Who was your inspiration and role model? My mother is my role model. She was a single mother with 4 children in her mid-twenties who showed us anything is possible if you work hard enough. We never did without, and she became

the first female police officer in the City of North Miami, eventually becoming a Commander. She always puts other people first, will give you the truth whether you like it or not, and is the family’s biggest cheerleader. What charities are you involved in and why? We support charities that are important to our clients and employees. These include charities connected to assisting veteran’s groups, families and children in difficult situations, and organizations dedicated to the arts. Our community has been very good to us, so giving back is a key priority for us. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? I started Brazilian jiu jitsu in my mid 50’s. The practice of this martial art is humbling and has improved my mental clarity in other parts of my life.

ALAN MENDELSOHN, M.D., F.A.C.S. EXPERT LASER CATARACT & LASER GLAUCOMA SURGEON EYE SURGEONS & CONSULTANTS 4651 Sheridan Street, Suite # 100, Hollywood, FL 33021 954-894-1500 | www.myeyesurgeons.com What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? I am a pioneer of five-minute laser cataract surgery and recognized by physicians as a preeminent expert in eye laser surgery. Laser cataract surgery provides far better visual results and safety compared to traditional cataract surgery. Cataract surgery previously was highly invasive whereby the patient had a shot to the eye, and a large incision closed with numerous sutures at the conclusion of the procedure. Now, a laser can perform 90% of the procedure flawlessly in about 30 seconds. From start to finish, this painless procedure takes only five minutes which includes implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). There are no shots, no stitches, nor any patches! The patient can resume normal activities the very next day including driving, working, and exercising. I personally wore eyeglasses from age 6 until 56 years old, and contact lenses from age 13 until 56, when I had a colleague perform the 5-minute laser cataract surgery with implantation of a multifocal lens on my own eyes, one week apart.

I have not worn glasses nor contact lenses in the seven years since the July 2014 laser procedures. My quality of vision is outstanding for driving, viewing a computer, and reading, including all the focal lengths in between. What is the one fact that you would like for our readers to know about you? For decades, South Florida physicians have called me “The physician’s physician.” I have had the honor and privilege to serve as the ophthalmologist to several hundred physicians (and their family members) in South Florida. The physicians in the area know which physicians have certain areas of expertise and utilize this inside knowledge to seek out the best of the best medical and surgical care for themselves and their family members. Additionally, I have physicians, including fellow ophthalmologists, come statewide to seek my care at Eye Surgeons & Consultants, especially for laser cataract surgery and laser glaucoma surgery. What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? Over the past two years I have been working hard to organize over 30 different orthopedic and neurosurgical groups to come together and create the first of its kind, specialty center of excellence in Florida. This has been a dream of mine since medical school and now that we have received unanimous County Commissioner approval, we are moving forward with construction in West Delray Beach. I believe we will transform the way healthcare is delivered to our community! What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? Never give up. Set your goals and create a plan of action then act on it. Listen to others for advice. Good advice can come from unlikely sources so always be open minded and listen to others, good and bad. Learn from your mistakes and turn them into a positive. Always remember balance is important and family is most important.

OCTOBER 2021 | LMGFL.COM

Who was your inspiration and role model? I believe we should take the best qualities of everyone we interact with and incorporate those positive energies into your own view on life. We all have something positive to contribute to society. When you look for the best in people you will usually find it and learn from them. We all have strengths and weaknesses but it’s about finding your personal strengths and cultivating them. I strongly believe one should never stop learning. Every day is a learning experience and presents a new opportunity, no matter how old you are. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? At the end of the day the most important thing in life is our children, our next generation. I believe everything we do should be with a focus on them and how we can make a positive impact, big or small, on the future.

I like to close a day by making a list of those things that I am grateful for and another for those prioritized accomplishments I want to fulfill for the following day. This process helps me “stay present” and focused in the day, remain humble and thankful for all that I have and can give, while creating a controllable process for success for the following day. What are your intrinsic motivations? At the core of my passion is the belief that in helping people achieve their personal definitions of success, I challenge myself to become more engaged and empathetic. What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? When my children were young, it was important to me to have

them begin with a strong base to grow into great adults. I feel it is priority as a parent to lead by example at home, in the community, and in charity. I am proud that they are setting out on their own and will bring a part of me with them on their journey. What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? Find a mentor that speaks with candor and acts with integrity. Ask questions. Listen intently. What charities are you involved in and why? I am the Advisory Board Chair for the Weston YMCA family center as well as the President of the Rotary Club of Weston. I am most proud of the life I have created for me, my wife and daughters, close friends, the staff at Wrecking Ball, clients, strangers, and all those I have positively impacted along the way. I love to elevate people and empower them for success while sharing the learnings and lessons from my journey. It hasn’t always been easy, taken a long time to figure out and may be part of living the proverbial ‘business iceberg.’ I am elated when I hear or see how someone’s life changes for the better, personally and/or professionally, knowing I was able to help them regardless if it was a few minute conversation or weeks of discussion. Who was your inspiration and role model? My dad. Some may say that’s the easy answer. It’s true. An immigrant from Hungary/Israel at the age of 15, his family came to the USA/NYC in search of the American Dream. Learning English fast, and losing his father a few years later, he, my grandma and uncles had to ‘figure it out’. Dad is a charismatic hustler, learning the craft of videotape editing in the early 1970’s, working the nightshift, dayshift, weekends – whatever it took. It was the “Mad Men” ad era and his stellar reputation in the industry catapulted him to the top where eventually he opened his own production/ post-production facility in the 1980’s. Initially he didn’t know much about the business behind the business and learned along the way. His company remained a cornerstone in the advertising industry for 20+ years, delivering 1000’s of commercials to your TV screen. Why

my hero? No formal training. No degree. Rode the ups and downs of the entrepreneurial rollercoaster. Massive respect for people and the craft. Lots of charm and honor. He took chances, millions of dollars in loans, expanding and reinventing the business with the latest technologies to get the job done. Quality was at the essence of every completed project and people – all people – were treated with respect. I spent my youth at his company taking it all in and professionally worked together for 10 years. Learning more than I could ever ask for, many of the qualities and learnings I inherited are passed along to others today. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? I should be dead. Yep, I should no longer be here. My wife saved my life in 2015 simply from looking at a picture of me where I seemed ‘off’ and I can’t thank her enough. Turns out I had an Ascending Aortic Aneurism that was on the verge of rupturing and needed open heart surgery to fix. Surrounded by amazing family, close friends, an incredible business partner, operations director and staff, I recovered knowing I have been blessed with a second chance. More than ever, I am using my time to make an impact, enjoy life and work, uplift and extract the good in people while helping them achieve their goals. To this day I don’t take it for granted, using every waking minute to do something before I eventually pass out for the night. It’s rare to find me sitting still!

BRIAN REAS NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL THE SOUTH FLORIDA GROUP 954.535.9937 | brian.reas@nm.com Who was your inspiration and role model? Up to this point in my life, it would be my mom and dad. Both grew up on farms in northern Wisconsin where they woke up early and worked hard every day to earn a meal. I’ve always respected their grit in everything they do, and they instilled that work ethic in me from an early age. My leadership style is to be the first in the office, work harder than the person next to me and lead by example. My South Florida inspiration and role model is Brenda Morrison. Brenda is President of YPN Urban League of Broward County and an advocate for community engagement and social impact. Her passion, leadership and intentionality on bringing positive change to South Florida is unmatched. Every time we meet, she inspires and pushes me to take action. Her leadership and passion are areas I aspire to each day. What charities are you involved in and why? Personally, and through Northwestern Mutual, I am actively involved with Alex’s Lemonade Stand and Conine Clubhouse at

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Both organizations are geared towards children – Alex’s focused on childhood cancer research and Conine Clubhouse on providing homes for families of children receiving medical care. Northwestern Mutual focuses their philanthropic support to childhood cancer research and providing support to survivors and their families. Having two young children of my own, this area of focus hits home and my focus is on helping these initiatives here in South Florida. What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? If you say you are going to do something, do it. Whether at work, at home or in the community, backing up your words with action is important. If you’re going to get a project done by a certain date, put in the time to get it done. If you plan to be home at 6:00 PM for dinner, make it a point to be home on time. People will respect you more and you’ll follow through on your commitments to get things done. In business, I am very proud of the unique culture that we’ve created at Century. We built a great team and have sustained and strengthened it for almost a decade. We’re passionate, diverse, and forward-looking and it’s reflected in the approach to the work that we do. It’s why our clients look to us as business partners, and that’s exactly what we set out to accomplish.

What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? Don’t quit when things get tough. Most people don’t find success in six weeks or six months. Work hard and get something positive from the work you put in. Its okay to quit and move on to the next challenge, but make sure you take with you an accomplishment that you can use in the future.

Who was your inspiration and role model? It’s not just one person, but many people in many places. Before starting Century, I worked in government, law, and insurance. In each of those roles I was fortunate to have really amazing bosses and mentors. I think about them all the time while working in this business and I try to apply what I’ve learned. At Century, we are extremely fortunate that we also have clients who run fantastic companies. I try to learn from them as well.

What charities are you involved in and why? I have always been drawn to causes that fight for people who can’t fight for themselves. I have mostly been involved with local government issues and children’s causes. The Miami Children’s Museum is an institution that I have worked with for many years. They provide great programs and services to children, and I really enjoy advocating on their behalf.

Two come to mind, first is my ability to ask lots of questions and “peel back the onion”. My team will often present observations, feedback, challenges, and successes in which I typically ask lots of questions to promote clarity. The uniqueness of this presents itself in a way that molds and shapes the team to always be thinking about what I might ask next. This particular unique habit is even more pronounced due to the complexitities that come with managing the singularity of an all suite condo hotel. The second is the ability to have some level of knowledge on any situation in the hotels. Some would misconstrue this as micro-management. On the contrary, I never involve myself because there is a lack of confidence in the outcome. I simply want to make myself available to share past experiences if I am asked for guidance. What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? Someone recognizing that I was ready to take the next step in my career and lead a team. I was coming off a very difficult period

in my career, however, that all changed when I decided to make a change. I was encouraged to show my capabilities and reaffirm to myself that I was capable of performing at a high level. The rewarding part was not only professionally celebrated with team members who had been on this journey with me, but personally as well. Even in our current environment I am proud of the work my team did to be recognized as the premiere, luxury meetings and event space in South Florida. What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? LISTEN. I am proud of the listening that took place over the last 18 months by our collective leaders. This allowed us to maintain a level of service to our hotel guests and group customers in our large ballroom and meeting spaces while we struggled with labor shortages, and supplier constraints. If your open to developing others around you, and ensuring their confidence is boosted then you just have to be present.

CRAIG SPURDLE, MD CHIEF OF ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Nicklauschildrens.org/DrSpurdle What advice would you give to other people looking to make a difference? Follow your passion! Whether you want to become a venture capitalist, a business owner, or an Olympic athlete, you have to love what you do to succeed in any career. Enthusiasm for your career choice provides the energy and endurance to accomplish the difficult milestones along the way. Direct your future with intention. Set long and short-term goals and hold yourself accountable to them. Be the leader of your life. What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? Becoming a father is the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life. I am so proud of my 13-year-old son Brooks. He is growing up to be an amazing young man. He loves water skiing, fishing, and also happens to be a great actor on stage. There isn’t a more

rewarding experience in life than raising our kids. I am learning from him as well. Brooks has made me a more empathic and caring person and physician. Being a father has helped me relate to the children we serve and provided me with a deeper understanding of what a family experiences when a child is injured and needs our help. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? I understand how my patients feel when they are out for their sport season due to an injury. Years before becoming a surgeon, I was on the United States World Cup Ski Team and had my share of injuries and surgeries along the way. I am grateful to all those who cared for me. This gives me a real appreciation for my career today. LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

SCOTT R. UDINE PRESIDENT AND CEO UDINE WEALTH MANAGEMENT INC. www.UdineWealth.com 954.258.4392 | Scott@UdineWealth.com What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why? I have spent over 3 decades managing money and about 15 years ago (with 4 young kids in the house) I made the leap to go out on my own and start Udine Wealth Management (UWM). What started out as me managing money for a small group of family and friends, has turned into a rapidly growing SEC registered investment advisory practice that was built one client at a time and all through referrals. UWM is now managing money for over 400 clients’ in the South Florida area (and around the country) and positively affecting many lives and my clients current and pending retirements. Who was your inspiration and role model? My inspiration every day for the last 30 years has been my wife and 4 kids. I like to work hard to provide a good life for them and allow them to explore and decide what their passions will be and how can they achieve them. My role models have always been my dad (Morey Udine) and my brother (Michael Udine). They both have taught me how to be a better man, person and father and have instilled in me the importance of being your best every day. They always showed me, from an early age, the importance of fiscal responsibility, discipline in your work ethic, and giving back to the community when possible.

96

OCTOBER 2021 | LMGFL.COM

What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference? I like to tell my kids and their friends, when they ask for advice, that no matter what they decide to do, do it with passion, commitment, dedication, and strength. Strive to be the best each and every day and always make sure you provide exceptional service and are available for clients 24/7/365. While the younger generation has grown up with social media and that can distract them at times, my advice is to use those resources to their advantage and be opportunistic. What is the one fact you would like our readers to know about you? I have never used an alarm clock in my life. I wake up every morning around 5:30 and am in the pool by 6:30 swimming about a mile a day. This prepares me for the long workday and gives me energy to write the “UWM Market Notes.” These are short updates that I email my clients a couple times a week. The topics are usually explaining what is going on in the financial world, our accounts and positions performance and anything else that might come up. I have been writing these notes for 15 years now and can probably turn them into a really good book one day. I must say my clients love them and the response I get from them, makes waking up at 5:30 every day worth it!

What are you or your company doing to give back to the community? From the very beginning of my legal career, I have always been philanthropically inclined. Aside from serving as the chair of the board of directors of 2-1-1 Broward, the vice chair of the board of directors of HANDY, and on the general board of directors of ARC Broward, Boys and Girls Club of Broward County and the NSU Ambassador Board, I am actively involved in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign for the American Cancer Society and assist a variety of Broward County nonprofit organizations throughout the year. How do you like working virtually? There are positives and negatives to the current “virtual workplace” but I cannot see this working long-term, as some suggest. I like the extra time that I get to spend with my children and the fact that I can work out in the mornings, sleep a bit later and wear shorts to board meetings. However, something

is lost when you aren’t in the same room as a person. I connect with my clients, colleagues and referral sources. Many of them become close friends. Virtual business has made me more efficient in drafting estate plans and making money but the lack of interpersonal interaction causes a cold transactional feeling. My favorite part of my job is getting to connect with people, hear their stories and form long-lasting relationships. That becomes more difficult when we cannot hug or shake hands. What advice would you give young men? No man is successful without a lot of other people wanting him to be. Business karma is a real thing and South Florida is a small community; your reputation will get around quickly. Surround yourself with those that lift you up and that you aspire to be more like. Do the same for others; lift them up and assist them in fulfilling their goals and aspirations. Volunteer your way to the top and give more to your community than you would ever expect in return. The support you give will come back to you 10 times over. LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

HANGING IN: Having already cultivated a late-night setting unlike anything in Fort Lauderdale—the hip and cozy Posh, with its live DJs, hookah, and celebrated sushi, sashimi and specialty rolls—John and Vandana Janho were poised to add to their local legacy. But less than a week after their March 2020 purchase of popular Asia Bay became official, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down restaurants all over Florida. “I’m not the type of person who bails on things,” says John, an esteemed chef and graduate of the culinary arts program at Johnson & Wales University. “We had a game plan and hung in there; eventually, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel.” A NEW DAY: Recently, that light fully revealed itself as Eve on the Water, a sharedplate concept that embraces the “Asia” aspect of its former incarnation in all its geographic splendor. The gourmet offerings on a menu John curated and brought to life incorporate influences from throughout the continent, not just the Far East fare typically associated with Asian cuisine. The falafel with special Lebanese seasonings, as well as

FROM LEFT: Fillet of sea bass off the new menu; a smoked old fashioned

the hummus (regular and pesto), speak to John’s own Middle Eastern descent. The traditional Filipino lumpia, meanwhile, recalls a vegetarian spring roll with a filling that includes carrots, scallions, onions, water chestnuts, garlic and fresh ginger.

IN DEMAND: Much of the new menu debuted before the name change, and favorites already have emerged. Korean baby back barbecue ribs marinate for 48 hours in a mixture with seven different Asian spices, minced garlic, ginger, soy sauce and Sapporo beer. “The Asian beer breaks down the meat; it’s so tender that it nearly falls off the bone,” John says. The chef is more tight-lipped about the

secrets of a stir-fry sauce that elevate the pineapple fried rice, but the dish is so popular that John “can’t make enough of it.”

MORE MENU: Portion sizes fall somewhere between tapas and entrees, allowing parties of two and more to try a variety of dishes on a menu that also features lightly battered rock shrimp tossed in kimchi sauce, crab Rangoon, and pan-seared scallops in chili soy butter. At press time, additional dishes were set to join the menu, including a fillet of sea bass with curry coconut milk sauce; grilled lamb chops, bathed in a garlic-rosemary marinade;

John’s delicious take on ceviche; skirt steak; and crab cakes.

STAY AWHILE: In addition to mulling over changes to the menu and restaurant name, John and Vandana spent time enhancing the overall vibe for customers who’ve been through their own travails over the past year-plus. The space at Eve features canal-front tables along the side, a casual gathering area overlooking the outdoor dining in front, a quaint bar, soothing sounds from a live DJ on

KICK BACK: An outdoor gathering spot for cocktails and conversation

several nights, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. “Instead of customers coming in and staying an hour, we want them to enjoy the night with us,” John says. “People have enough aggravation at work or at home. They’re coming out to have a good time. We want to give them their money’s worth.”

SHORT TAKES >> The innovation in the kitchen extends to a craft cocktail menu that showcases Vandana’s passion for mixology. Among her creations: Aromatherapy (with Roku gin, elderflower liqueur, lavender extract, and pink grapefruit juice), and a new spin on the old fashioned with Woodford Reserve bourbon, maple syrup, walnut bitters—and a tableside process that infuses smoke into the ice. >> John and Vandana’s original venture, Posh Lounge (110 N. Federal Highway, No. 101), is celebrating 18 years in Fort Lauderdale. LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

Move Over, Man Cave

INDUSTRY PROS SHARE IDEAS FOR ENTERTAINMENT CENTERS THAT THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN ENJOY By Mallory Evans Jacobson

L

et’s be honest. As a design approach, doesn’t the man cave feel a bit archaic and out of touch? Do all men really aspire to possess a hideaway full of

102

OCTOBER 2021 | LMGFL.COM

clunky, dark furniture? That certainly seems to be the consensus among industry professionals. Overall, masculine-themed retreats are no longer trending. In fact, many families either don’t have the room for one, or choose to utilize extra bedrooms in more useful ways.

For example, a home office has become necessary for South Floridians as employers continue to stress the importance of working from home, or at a minimum, abide by a hybrid model. Therefore, having an actual desk beyond the kitchen table, and a quiet setting for calls and Zoom meetings, has outweighed

the need for a space in which to play video games and display a beer can collection. If you’re looking to rethink the way you entertain in your home, and maximize the space that you already have, here are three areas to consider.

THE LIVING ROOM: Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the living room was a space for enjoying conversation and an occasional cocktail. But, like the formal dining room, it’s an area that’s frequently underused. For this reason, and because they are no longer reliant on achieving the absence of light, many interior experts have seen an opportunity to blend this previous iteration of the traditional living room with a setting that creates the ideal media viewing experience. For example, when Miami design firm Britto Charette was called on to create the featured living room rendering for a custom penthouse in Miami Beach’s new Ritz-Carlton Residences, David Charette envisioned an open concept space with ample seating options and a colossal television that resembles a work of art. “Although the unit extends to almost 7,500 square feet, it lends itself to entertaining and allows family members and guests to interact with each other from anywhere in the space,” Charette notes. “But the configuration also allows for separate areas for eating, drinking and socializing, creating a feeling of being separate yet together.”

in Pompano Beach, designers are choosing to employ calming earth tones, sleek lines, comfortable sofas and more streamlined appliances. “The accessibility of flat-screen televisions, like Sony’s recently released 100-inch Bravia model, has eliminated the need for the large projectors and accompanying screens that were once essential,” Ruiz says.

THE BACKYARD: As temperatures start to drop in South Florida, albeit slightly, we’ll be spending even more time outdoors. Therefore, let your

backyard become a true extension of your home’s interior as an additional zone for entertainment. Ruiz also worked on the outdoor setting shown (bottom of this page), where the flat-screen television is positioned amid trees and serves as a focal point of the pool area. “The goal was to create openness and allow the family and their guests to interact from different areas of the backyard,” Ruiz says. The result is a tropical oasis that feels like a great escape while still being connected to the overall vibe of the home.

THE MEDIA ROOM: When designing or updating a home today, people are much less likely to request a conventional home theater. Instead, South Florida’s ultramodern homes are being outfitted with media rooms that have multiple uses. Gone are the days of cherry red accents, vibrant patterned carpet, massive reclining seats, and cumbersome A/V equipment that has to be configured behind panels and walls. As shown in the featured media room, which was orchestrated by Stephanie Ruiz of First Priority Audio

T H E Y D O K N OW JAC K HEAVENLY SPA BY WESTIN CREATES A TREATMENT WORLD JUST FOR MEN, THANKS TO AN INNOVATIVE CONNECTION TO A TOP-SELLING SKIN-CARE LINE

By Kevin Kaminski WHERE: The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach, 321 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. THE LOWDOWN: It’s no secret in local spa circles that The Westin overlooking Fort Lauderdale Beach offers its own slice of heaven. Though intimate (with only six treatment rooms) compared to some of its sprawling counterparts, Heavenly Spa continues to resonate with

rejuvenation enthusiasts on multiple fronts. Reviewers on Tripadvisor, where Heavenly Spa is the top-ranked resort spa in Fort Lauderdale, point to everything from its soothing ambience and worldclass (and highly knowledgeable) therapists to original offerings like the 100 Acres of Relaxation Cannabis Cure, which includes a CBD massage and eye mask, as well as a warm hemp foot treatment.

But appreciation isn’t limited to the gender people most associate with pampering. Men also are having a moment at Heavenly Spa, thanks, in part, to Jack Black. To be clear, this has nothing to with the actor who starred in School of Rock and Jumanji. To further elevate its men’s offerings, Heavenly Spa created original protocols and treatments that incorporated Jack Black skin-care products—one of the best-selling brands of men’s scrubs, moisturizers, cleansers, and lotions on the planet. The result is a world of healing and relaxation tailored specifically to the needs of the modern man. SPOTLIGHT TREATMENT: Though it sounds like the name of an experimental jazz fusion band from the 1980s, the Twin Turbo Body Booster with Hyperice Percussion Therapy is really an hour-plus ode to reenergizing. It starts with a full-body exfoliation incorporating a Jack Black scrub (with arnica, sea salt and shea butter) that leaves your skin, as accurately predicted by the Heavenly Spa therapist, “soft as a baby’s behind.” After showering off the scrub, a traditional massage with range-of-motion stretching receives a stimulating technology assist from Hyperice. The recovery device, with its three speeds of deep-pressure percussion therapy, reduces muscle soreness and improves flexibility in a way that even the best massage technician can’t replicate. There’s also a Hyperice recovery station at the resort’s fitness center with handheld devices that guests can use after workouts. OTHER SPA HIGHLIGHTS: Hands and feet receive

their just due thanks to the spa’s mani-pedi offerings for men. The Jack Black Hand Healer, in addition to nail grooming and hand/elbow massaging, features a hydrating eucalyptus CBD mask for the hands. Eucalyptus also is in the air (along with spearmint and rosemary) during the Cool Moisture pedicure and also boasts a therapeutic CBD foot massage. On the facial front, the Skin Defend & Men’d treatment draws on Jack Black’s Pro Series of products, plus the men receive a scalp, hand and foot massage. For added relaxation, don’t forget to ask your spa therapist for a cold Funky Buddha beer, or a glass of wine. … Heavenly Spa boasts eucalyptus steam rooms, hot tubs, and Swiss rain showers in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms. … For a more advanced facial treatment, ask about the spa’s HydraFacial medical-grade skin-care offerings. … Looking to bring your significant other for a couples adventure? The Canna-Bliss treatment includes side-by-side CBD Swedish massages. … Obviously, the ladies have more than their share of treatment options as well. Visit the Heavenly Spa website to see the complete menu. WORTH THE WAIT MATT STABILE, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF FAU’S THEATRE LAB, TAKES THE STAGE ALONGSIDE HIS WIFE FOR A PANDEMIC-DELAYED WORLD PREMIERE

ot many actors receive a full 20 months between the first preview performance of their latest play and the official opening night. That’s the surreal position in which Matt Stabile finds himself. Stabile has been artistic director of Theatre Lab, the professional theater company and new-play incubator at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, since 2018. In March 2020, however, he was set to appear on the other side of the stage for the first time in three years. Better still, he was to star alongside his wife, two-time Carbonell winner Niki Fridh, in a two-character play: a world premiere called To Fall in Love, a real-time, voyeuristic drama about a grief-stricken marriage on defibrillators, and the couple’s lastditch efforts to salvage it. “It’s the first play that I’d read in a long time that made me want to come back to acting,” he says. “I keep joking that I’m trying to retire from acting—semi-joking. But it’s the kind of work you always hope you’re going to be doing when you get into this business. … It’s a beautiful exploration of what love is, how love is constantly evolving, and what love can do and can overcome.” The sets were built, rehearsals were completed, and a single preview performance went ahead as scheduled. That night, Stabile could see the writing on the wall; only a quarter of the 64 ticket holders on the books that night showed up. By the next day, “nonessential” businesses had begun to close their doors. For a year and a half, it looked as though the play would go down in cultural circles as an almost mythic production—a soul-stirring, heart-tugging work of theatrical labor experienced by all of 16 people. But this November, To Fall in Love is finally set to resume its run, with everyone in the cast and crew a year older, a year wiser, and a year

more inclined to not take anything for granted. When asked about the biggest challenge of the COVID-19 era, Stabile says, “Just learning to become comfortable with uncertainty—which is a weird thing for a theater artist to go through, because any time you start a project, you’re not certain it’s going to work. Especially if you’re in the business of new plays.” Stabile has known just about

“BEING IN THE BUSINESS OF NEW PLAYS, WE’RE NOT SOLELY IN THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS. THERE’S A SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ELEMENT TO WHAT WE DO, TO CREATE DIALOGUE AND HELP CREATE CHANGE THROUGH WHAT WE’RE MOUNTING.” —MATT STABILE every side of the theater business, which he believes has made him a better artistic director. “When I was in school, part of my degree was in scenic design,” he says. “I did lighting, and when we had smaller companies, I was sweeping the stage, if need be.” For much his life, he’s also taught others the craft. A native South Floridian, Stabile left to earn a theatre studies degree from Southern Methodist University (class of 2000) in Dallas. He then returned to join Fantasy Theatre Factory, a ven-

erable children’s troupe in Miami. He taught educational outreach workshops there and brought similar programs to area middle schools. From there, he spent seven years on the faculty at G-Star School of the Arts, a public charter high school in West Palm Beach, where he led and even created much of its acting department curricula. He later held positions at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, where his work as artistic coordinator for its summer ArtsCamp earned him the venue’s Outstanding Teacher of 2013 award, and at Delray Beach’s Theatre at Arts Garage, where he served as education director from 2013 to 2015. All the while, he was pursuing an acting career. Handsome and charming, but with an ability to play brooding and misanthropic characters, his most memorable early role on the South Florida professional stage was in Island City Stage’s The Timekeepers, a shattering Holocaust drama that swept the 2014 Carbonell Awards. He played a humorless prison functionary, hired to supervise a labor camp, a role he described years later as “one of those stories that immediately felt like it mattered.” Stabile accrued a career as a versatile supporting actor, playing police officers and flustered filmmakers and recovering drug addicts and small-time criminals in productions spanning the tri-county area. None of them have required the sort of onstage stamina, let alone the line memorization, of the co-lead in To Fall in Love. The show’s director (and the founder of Theatre Lab), Lou Tyrrell, believes his protégé is more than ready for the opportunity. The same goes for Stabile’s ability to run the company outright. For Tyrell, who started the company in 2015, his choice of successor was an easy one. “Matt is among the most talented, dynamic, and exciting artistic directors in American theater today,” he says. “A consummate director, he is also a playwright, an accomplished LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

actor and, so important in these challenging times, a savvy theater administrator. He’s as comfortable working budgets as he is working rehearsal. All of his skills are wrapped in an intellect and a passion uniquely ideal for the development of new work, which is Theatre Lab’s mission.” Because Theatre Lab hosts only world-premiere plays, Stabile is in a tougher position than some of his contemporaries, who have the luxury of looking to hot Broadway properties or fail-safe classics when programming their seasons. “The way we’ve always approached that is by saying, ‘You’re almost never going to recognize the title, and you’re probably not going to recognize the playwright … but what we can promise you is that we’re going to do our absolute best,’ ” he says. When considering material, he

adds, “You’ve got consider your audience. But in considering your audience, you also need to consider how you might challenge them. I was a teacher forever, and I still view everything through education, so it’s like scaffolding. What can we do this year that will open up a possibility for next season, and that will open up a possibility for three years down the road? So you’re always trying to think much further out.” Stabile expects to take the stage Nov. 20 in To Fall In Love, but as we’ve all learned from 2020, one of the slipperiest things one can do in a pandemic is make a plan. “Early on in the pandemic, we were making plan A and B and C and D, and ‘if this, then that,’ and it just becomes an exhausting exercise. At some point you just say, we’re going to go with this, and we will react and adapt if something comes up.”

TO THE RESCUE In the early days of the pandemic, when actors and crew of South Florida productions suddenly lost all of their income for the foreseeable future, Stabile stepped in and launched two Online Original Monologue Festival fundraisers. He invited the theater community to write, direct and act in original monologues broadcast on Zoom. Each professional held up their Venmo or Paypal handle at the end of each monologue. The morning after the first festival went live, Stabile says, “I got a text message from one of the actors involved, and they had already made enough in donations to pay their rent. I sat there and instantly started crying.” The festivals ultimately raised about $8,000 for struggling actors and backstage crew, and companies in New York eventually contacted Stabile in order to stage spinoff festivals.

BE A LEADER LEADER. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. FOR BROWARD. BE BOLD. Steve Hudson says, “Lasting change happens when people who care about their community choose to make a difference.” That’s why Steve and the Hudson family joined the BE BOLD Leadership Campaign. The Hudsons have called Broward home for four generations, and philanthropy is a family tradition. After years of giving through their family foundation, the Hudsons saw the BE BOLD Leadership Campaign as an opportunity to amplify their impact and create resources for their community that last forever. So, with a gift from their family foundation, they established the endowed Hudson Family Fund at the Community Foundation of Broward, to fuel local solutions today and shape a brighter future for Broward. “The Community Foundation makes philanthropy easy and fulfilling,” Steve said. “They have opened our eyes to new ways to make a lasting impact for the community we love.” Underwriting support generously provided by:

Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone is the best. I had my left hip done using the SPAIRE technique and the recovery was so incredible I decided to have my right hip done.” ~Bettina Kapp

SCHOOL OF ROCK BROWARD COUNTY CORAL SPRINGS 954.757.ROCK FORT LAUDERDALE 954.564.ROCK POMPANO BEACH 954.941.ROCK WEST BROWARD 954.252.ROCK WWW.SCHOOLOFROCK.COM

So, I could write an article that could be one giant advertisement for the School of Rock. However, as a music educator first and always foremost I feel like that would be a little disingenuous. To claim that the School of Rock, while a great music school for all skill levels and all ages, is the only path towards a child having music in their lives is a falsehood. Music education comes in many forms, from the floundering but still present and still vital choir and instrumental programs in the school systems, to the traditional yet slightly outdated model of students learning classical music on guitar and piano. I personally will always encourage a child to learn music anywhere they can in this day and age, even if it is not at our Schools. The point is, when a child learns music, they’re not just opening up their minds to art and creativity. Music is art, and to truly understand art is a sophisticated process that most younger students do not have the capacity to fully grasp. So, then what is the purpose of introducing young minds to music? There are many other lessons that students learn that transfer easily to other aspects of their lives, and prove useful well into their adulthood. When students learn how to read music and music theory, they learn logic systems directly related to critical thinking and combinatorial mathematics. When students practice their instrument at home, they develop self-discipline and learn how to achieve short term goals. When a student is working in a band setting, they learn how to work well with others despite varying skill levels, and they learn how to achieve long term goals. Even when students do NOT work on their craft individually or prepare for their rehearsal, they still learn something! They see their peers advancing without them, and they learn the hard truth about working for one’s achievements rather than just expecting them to be given. And there is no greater lesson in responsibility than having a child fail on stage due to lack of preparation. A hard lesson to watch for sure, but sometimes necessary. Yeah. It’s an awesome thing. Stop on by! Or don’t! But get your kid in music!

“Music should be fun, and for everybody.”

ST. THO MAS U N I V E R S I T Y 16401 NW 37TH AVENUE, MIAMI GARDENS, FL 33054 800-367-9010 • WWW.STU.EDU In late 2021, St. Thomas University (STU) will embark on a year-long celebration of its 60th Anniversary. The University was founded by Augustinian friars who were forcibly expelled by the Castro regime from the Universidad de Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Havana, Cuba in 1961. That same year, they regrouped in South Florida, and established what is now the only Archdiocesan sponsored university in the state. Today, STU is a thriving Catholic university with rich cultural and international diversity committed to the academic and professional success of its students who become ethical leaders in our global community. We prime our students for success by infusing ethical leadership training into all our academic programs. STU’s Institute for Ethical Leadership not only offers bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees in the discipline, but also works with students and faculty across the university to produce graduates prepared to handle the many issues confronting our world. St. Thomas University’s inherent diversity offers the perfect incubator for developing the education, ideas, and skills necessary to excel in the 21st century. In 2020, STU was ranked #1 in Social Mobility in the South by U.S. News & World Report, confirming the university’s success in catapulting graduates into higher financial strata. While many colleges and universities withered in the face of the global pandemic, STU brought in the three largest incoming classes in the University’s history. Our newest students are excited about innovative programs such as Fashion Merchandising, Culinary Arts, Tourism and Hospitality, Exercise Science and Human Performance, Practical Theology, and the nation’s oldest undergraduate Sports Administration program. STU’s College of Law continues to be a vanguard in the areas of inclusion and diversity, consistently ranking among the nation’s best law schools. The College of Law offers students the opportunity to make a difference in the areas of tax law, human rights, and social justice. At St. Thomas University, we have distilled the three characteristics necessary for our students to have a magical collegiate experience: mentoring faculty who challenge our students academically, character formation activities outside the classroom, and required real-world experience before graduation. We aim to become the best Catholic university in the South, and hope you journey with us into a prosperous future.

We prime our students for success by infusing ethical leadership training into all our academic programs.

The vaccine and the Delta variant. Trump. The withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan. The next Jeopardy host! There are a lot of controversial ideas, topics, individuals and triggering topics out lately. Just mentioning any of the above may set someone off, and equally, not mentioning it may just do the same. So, I’m sharing my tips and tricks for how and when to speak up in the face of a controversial topic, along with helpful examples from those who have gone through it, to help you assess your place in all of this chaos. First, and most importantly, remember what you stand for. What are your values? Just like in meditation when we say, “return to the breath,” you should always return to your personal values when deciding whether or not to weigh in. Regarding the vaccine, specifically, I felt it was important to take a public stand in support of vaccinations, and I (also, publicly) incentivized my employees at BoardroomPR to get vaccinated by offering them extra paid time off, among other perks. One of my personal values is to treat everyone on my team like family. With this in mind, speaking out about the vaccine, and my desire for all of our employees to get one, felt like a no brainer because it is deeply connected with my own compass as a person, and as a CEO. I was glad to have my name, face, and business associated with this topic, and I would do it again! Be mindful of your audience. Are you working in/with communities directly impacted by this topic? Always remember your audience – your clients, your community, those in your orbit, when deciding whether or not to weigh in on a controversial

issue. Never lose sight of who you are speaking to; this should be the second line of thinking when it comes to taking a stand. Consider your point of view. How is your voice or point of view productively contributing to the conversation? Will people want to hear from you? Are you directly related to the topic at hand, or just a passionate bystander? Consider your involvement and impact, and how your voice contributes to the conversation. Use your intuition. Ultimately, speaking out will either feel right to you, or it won’t. Let your intuition guide you through deciding whether or not to speak up and out. If you thought about your corporate values, your audience, and the relevance of your point of view and yet, you’re getting a conflicting feeling inside, that is okay

and that is normal! Listen to it. You may thank that little voice later! So next time you find yourself fired up about a controversial topic, I hope you’ll walk yourself through these four steps: remember what you stand for, be mindful of your audience, consider your point of view, and use your intuition. With a little bit of thoughtfulness and attention, I am confident that you’ll know exactly what to do!

HURRICANE SEASON

BAD BREATH AND BEYOND

We know major storms come, so how should realtors and practitioners prepare? According to the National Hurricane Center, Florida’s hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th. Lender/Mortgage Considerations. Lenders may elect to re-appraise a property for storm damage and can charge their borrowers for revaluing the property (i.e. the collateral). Interest rate locks may expire during a storm and cost more money to extend. Property Insurance Considerations. As a precondition to loaning money to buy property, lenders require borrowers purchase property insurance with 100% Replacement Cost Value (RCV). Watch out for the accompanying “Law and Ordinance” endorsement which either includes or excludes costs regulating the construction, use, or repair of any property or requiring demolition and debris removal. Be RANDY diligent, when a storm GILBERT, is imminent, insurers J.D. impose a binding &KLHI +DSSLQHVV 2IƓ FHU moratorium and will not )ORULGDōV 7LWOH ,QVXUDQFH write new insurance Company policies, making it 5DQG\#)7,& 1HW impossible to get a 7LWOH

loan. Have the insurance agent “bind” coverage ASAP but postpone the effective date until closing. Flood Insurance Considerations. Flood Insurance is separate from property insurance, even if hurricane winds and rain caused the flood to occur. The term “flood” includes, “The unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source.” Properties in highrisk flood areas with mortgages from federally regulated or insured lenders must have flood insurance (no waiting period). But if there is no lender at all (e.g. cash buyer) or the lender is a Non-FDIC insured lender (e.g. private) and flood insurance is requested, then prepare for NFIP’s (National Flood Insurance Program) mandatory 30 day waiting period. As a work around, a buyer can find a private flood insurance company or have the seller transfer their existing flood insurance to the buyer. FTIC is a national award winning title insurance company known for its white glove customer service and “No Junk Fee Guarantee.” ®

Whether it’s a loaded tuna sandwich or overloaded garlic bread, we’ve all experienced unpleasant breath (halitosis) at one time or another. However, it is estimated that 25% of Americans suffer from halitosis on a regular basis. More than a billion dollars are spent yearly on treatments to prevent and treat bad breath, sometimes without relief. Understandably, chronic halitosis can affect one’s self image, and can adversely impact emotional, social and psychological wellbeing. The cause will either be issues inside the mouth, or medications and conditions elsewhere. Inside the mouth, DR. NICK we are generally CICORTAS, confronted with high DMD bacterial sources Lifeway Dental of Boca in gum pockets, or 9101 Lakeridge Blvd., periodontitis, and Unit 9 Boca Raton, FL 33496 on the back of the 561-852-7700 tongue. Bacteria will lifewaydentalboca.com naturally break down food particles in the mouth and in the process produce volatile sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, and other foulsmelling compounds such as putrescine and cadaverine. Not brushing daily and leaving gum disease untreated can provide these bacteria with a continuous food supply. If the mouth and tongue are regularly cleaned and bad breath persists, other sources should be considered. Conditions such as kidney disorders, type 2 diabetes, sinus infection, postnasal drip, and digestive disturbances can contribute to halitosis. Moreover medications, especially those that reduce saliva, can worsen bad breath. These include decongestants, hypertension medications, antidepressants, and narcotics. Your dentist can help rule these out with a thorough medical history. The best weapon in the fight against bad breath is good oral hygiene. After ruling out medications and other causes, the focus is placed on brushing and flossing, followed by an antibacterial mouth rinse such as CloSYS, Chlorhexidine, or ioRinse. If your tongue has a white coating, it must be brushed gently every day especially in the back. To keep a continuous supply of saliva, sugar-free gum with Xylitol can be used throughout the day. I am sure you have heard of a wedding registry and a baby registry, but a putative father registry? What is a putative father and what are they registering for? A putative father is a man who is alleging to be the father of a child who is born to a woman who he is not married to at the time of his child’s birth. Why is this important? Many people have children out of wedlock. Some casual relationships (and one-night stands) result in a baby being born several months later. Any man who has a child out of wedlock, who does not want their child placed for adoption, should register with the putative father registry. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK In all my years as a money manager, I have not experienced a market quite like this. The market continues to plug along with extremely low levels of volatility as investors chant their TINA (there is no alternative to stocks) mantra. Recent events have brought a new cohort of investors into the market that have never experienced any significant level volatility or a bear market. They seem to be much more short-term oriented and are focused on elevated levels of trading and making quick profits. With the S&P 500 not experiencing a 5% pullback since October 2020 and logging more than 50 record highs so far in 2021, it may appear anyone can be a stock market genius. So long as the market environment remains accommodating, we believe these new market participants are here to stay. This is not worrying in and of itself. However, with the additional developments listed above, we feel the market may be getting a little too complacent. We feel a market pullback is long overdue and would ultimately be a healthy development overall. This is not a call for panic; although we feel an extra level of prudence is well, prudent.

FAMILY WELLNESS

SELF-CARE IS ESSENTIAL TO FAMILY LIFE Sometimes daily life such as working, raising our children to be healthy young adults, attending to career obligations, or helping our parents who are in their senior years to live the rest of their lives comfortably add stress. We get so occupied in the role of the caretaker, parent, proxy; we forget to take a moment to be human. Very often, we neglect the most important person, ourselves. The consequences of neglecting yourself can lead to becoming overwhelmed, stressed, and burnout at a minimum. On airplanes, you are always instructed,” in the event of an emergency, put your mask on first, then the mask of others.” There is a reason for that. A happier, healthier, less stressed adult will ultimately make clear choices that best suit their family’s needs. Taking time for yourself this spring should be paramount; it allows you to regain calmness in your soul. ou wouldn’t know it from watching the breakout star of Bravo television’s reality series Below Deck helm luxurious superyachts in exotic locations while cameras are rolling for what’s now the cable network’s most watched show. The only cast member to appear on every season of the series since it premiered (July 1, 2013) seems born to play this real-life role. His confident, no-nonsense approach and never-ending stream of “Leeisms”—such as, “You’re as useless as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest”—have made him a reality superstar at an age (he’ll be 72 on Nov. 15) when many of his South Florida contemporaries have called it a career. But Harold Lee Rosbach—aka Captain Lee—understands better than anyone that he’s an unlikely and accidental celebrity. “I’m just a captain who does his job. I just happen to be filmed doing it,” says Rosbach, who returns for Season 9, which debuts on Oct. 25. “I don’t run my boat any differently than I did 30 years ago.” That he even became a captain is the well-documented stuff of legend. The former welder and bartender was in dire financial straits, trying to support his family with wife Mary Anne, and working in Turks and Caicos, when he answered an ad for a deckhand job. As the story goes, he didn’t have the stomach for that initial gig. But Rosbach will tell you that he was perpetually seasick for much of his first year at sea. Still, by age 35, he’d earned his captain’s license. It’s a responsibility that he doesn’t take lightly. “The biggest misconception is that people think Below Deck is scripted, and I don’t even know how you’d go about that,” Rosbach says. “You’re not dealing with actors or actresses, we’re dealing with everyday people who can’t even remember most of the time what they had for lunch yesterday.” As if to put an exclamation point on

142

OCTOBER 2021 | LMGFL.COM

the subject, Rosbach says he would refuse to be part of the he show if it were scripted. The work off a captain is too serious, too steeped in responsibility, to leave in the hands of a writing staff. “Screw up, and guesss who’s going to jail? Yours truly. Ask the captain of the Valdez,” Rosbach h says, explaining that it was the third officer who ran the oil tanker Exxon Valdez aground in Alaska’s Prince William lliam Sound in 1989 in one of the worst orst oil spills in U.S. history. However, r, it was Capt. Joseph Hazelwood who ended up being held accountable. ble. That’s why Rosbach ch is firm and stern when talking about bout the people aboard his ship. “When en you get four stripes on your shoulder, lder, and you get your own boat, you can an run it any way you would like,” he says. “But for right here and forr right now, we’re doing it my way. And d it’s that way with the producers. They may want one thing—and if it iss safe, we’ll do it. If it’s not, we won’t.” After more than 120 20 episodes— with such titles as “The he One Where the Charter Guests Almost Die,” “Hot Mess Express,” and “There’s No Crying in Yachting”—fans ns of the series have seen Captain Lee’s ee’s patience tested more than once ce by clients and crew members. In many any ways, Rosbach’s businesslike demeanor—amid the occasional madness—is the perfect counterbalance. All of which only makes the show’s origin story ry even more ironic. Because e Bravo never intended for Captain Lee to become the face of Below Deck. ck.

The Legend is Born

Rosbach was working ng as captain of the charter yacht Cuor uor di Leone (which was renamed d Honor for the first season of Below w Deck) when his boss called him about a possible rom Fort Laumultiweek charter from derdale to St. Maarten. en. “He said, ‘It’s a TV show that wants to use the boat [with their own cap-

tain and crew]; they th hey said they don’t even need you. think this is the way I should be perceived,” the captain says, s, adding a profane postscript. “I’m not going to o say [something] because it will sound good. That hat isn’t me.”

Reality Check

Rosbach and Mary Anne, his wife of 46 years, each had two children from their respective first marriages.. Their blended family of four children became me five when they had son Josh together. The coin on a gold chain that Rosbach wears around his neck speaks to the news that he shared on Instagram nstagram two Julys ago—that Josh had died of an accidental drug overdose at age 42. “It’s from thee Spanish galleon called the Atocha, which sank off of Key West in the 16th century; Mary Anne had it made for me 25 years ago. When n our son passed away, I was trying to figure out something to do.” So, Rosbach had the dolphins that surround the piece filled with his son’s ashes. Mary Anne tells him to lift his shirt and show his tattoo. The likeness is from a photo of Josh that’s on a table in the dining ining room of their house. Mary Anne picks up the photograph and puts it next to the tattoo that hat he has now exposed. “[Josh] is over er my heart,” he says.

Sweet and Simple

Despite his renown, own, Rosbach lives rather simply with Mary Anne in a three-bedroom home ere houses are tucked close toon a street where gether in Fort Lauderdale’s Tarpon River neighborhood. Mary Anne (who was introduced to ns when she appeared in Season Below Deck fans ed a few doors down for more 5) says they lived than 15 years, before moving to a rented house ay in affluent Rio Vista. a few miles away Rosbach sayss it wasn’t for them. “We dipped our toe in the Rio Vista pool, but it was way too frigid,” he says. In 2017, theyy went back to the he old neighborht a hood and bought w doors place just a few ir original down from their mfortable and quaint. The front house. need [a boat] for?” Rosbach says. “I have access to enough boats that I can use.” There is a built-in pool area with a barbecue; the couple love spending time in their outdoor space when Rosbach isn’t away. If there’s a luxury indulgence in their world, it would appear to be the silver Bentley in the driveway. Rosbach bought it for his wife. But truth be told, Mary Anne enjoys her trusty older-model Lexus SUV, which she just drove to Publix. She’s excited about the buy-one, get-one-free deals she’s snagged, including Rosbach’s favorite Pure Protein shake. There’s another Lexus in the driveway—a fiery red sportscar, an LC 500. “I love driving it. It’s fast and it’s sporty, and it puts a smile on my face every time I get into it.”

Dealing with Fame

The same can’t be said about his reaction to the nickname he earned when Bravo’s promotional team cut a spot hyping Season 3 with Rosbach in the spotlight. A Barry White-esque soundtrack plays as video of the captain comes into frame. The words? “Ooh, baby. He’s the stud of the sea. He’s Capt. Lee. When you crew for him, you’re working hard as can be … fool around, and you’ll scrub the decks ’til 3. He’s rough, he’s tough, he’s alpha to the tee … Capt. Lee.” Rosbach says he’ll never listen to Barry White the same way again. “I had no idea they were going to do this. A special team came down and did some camera shots,” he says. “The next thing you know I’m looking at this teaser, and they are talking about the ‘stud of the sea.’ I said to them, ‘Oh, someone is going to pay for this.’ ” It wasn’t the only trapping of television fame for which Rosbach wasn’t prepared. “No one gives you a playbook to be a celebrity all of a sudden,” he says. The night before, while out to dinner at “a hole in the wall” restaurant near Las Olas Boulevard, he could feel someone’s eyes on him. “I caught ‘em staring,” he says. “Finally, they came up and wanted to know if they could get a picture. I said, sure. Look, if I’m out and about, that’s fair game. My philosophy is that if you can put a smile on someone’s face, and it takes 10 or 15 seconds of your time, why wouldn’t you do that?” While he’s willing to pause for a picture, he draws the line at people following him home. To which Mary Anne quips with a grin, “It doesn’t help that he has ‘Capt. Lee’ as his license plate.” Rosbach says he hasn’t thought about the shelf life for Below Deck. The show is now his full-time job. “When they film, it’s six weeks of nonstop,” he says. “A short day is 14 to 16 hours.” He does, however, have a handle on when he’ll hang up his whites. “I make more money than your average captain. I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t been good for us. When they want me to stop being me, then I will probably stop doing the show because it won’t be fun anymore. “Life’s too short to put up with crap from anyone.”

Short Takes with Capt. Lee SEASON 9 OF BELOW DECK: The Emmy-nominated series returns on Monday, Oct. 25. The waters of St. Kitts will serve as the backdrop for a season aboard the superyacht My Seanna with show veterans Eddie Lucas (in his new role as first officer) and chef Rachel Hargrove—as well as a crew of new “yachties.” FAVORITE PORT OF CALL: The islands of Tahiti were home for the sixth season in 2018. “It’s like stepping back in time,” Rosbach says. “You feel like you’ll see a T-rex crawl out from behind a mountain. It’s so green and pristine. A lot of the time, we’d be the only boat anchored.” WORST DAY ON THE BOAT: On Season 6, deckhand Ashton Pienaar went overboard when he stepped on the line to tow the tender; it wrapped around his ankle and dragged him off the yacht and into the water. “It was so close and so scary. We were within 30 seconds of him dying.” HIS DAILY ROUTINE: “I get up in the morning, have a light breakfast, then I go to the gym every day. I do all my own social media. I don’t want anyone else to touch it. How do they know what I’m thinking? I spend about 2½ hours a day on it.” A PROJECT NEAR AND DEAR: Raising money to launch his floating rehabilitation center—in honor of son Josh. The almost 400-foot-long barge is a former floating hotel and is currently in Tampa. “The floating rehab would be something away from everything and everyone. We’ll offer vocational training, such as marine engineering, culinary, computer and IT skills, dive skills, even cosmetology. What we want to do is not only get [addicts off drugs] but give them a reason to stay clean.” LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

At the intersection of Anthony Timiraos’ lifelong passions for travel and photography are snapshots capturing the shared humanity that binds people from all walks of life Story by Kevin Kaminski

SANTIAGO DE CUBA (DECEMBER 2018) “During a cruise to Cuba, I was stopped by these two ladies who saw me take photos of aerobic dancers at the central plaza. They see the cruise ships docking, and they have their photography outfits and cigars all ready. Tourists snap photos of them, and their hand goes out. I gave them a few dollars, and they were very appreciative. I also captured an interesting photo. … Those Norma Desmond eyes were hypnotizing. The wrinkles on her face [felt like] a road map of her history in Cuba.” LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

F

OR FIVE DECADES, ANTHONY TIMIRAOS HAS BEEN BLESSED WITH TWO GREAT LOVES, BOTH OF WHICH, IN DIFFERENT WAYS, HAVE OPENED HIS EYES AND WARMED HIS HEART. The first is husband Arthur; the two first met as teens at a department store in Waterbury, Connecticut called Worth’s, where they worked part-time afternoon jobs after classes at their respective high schools. They’ve been together 51 years. The second is the wanderlust that he and Arthur have shared since a post-college trip to Europe in 1983 that changed the way they saw the world. “We decided after that first trip to do as much traveling as we could afford in those days,” says the Fort Lauderdale resident, 68, who retired in 2016 after serving five years as CEO of Our Fund Inc., the community foundation serving LGBTQ-plus nonprofits in South Florida that he co-founded with other local philanthropists. “Almost every summer, we’d leave the country—Egypt, Africa, Greece— and we’d come back more well-rounded, with a better understanding of other cultures.” Before long, Timiraos would fold another interest into his travels. Through the lens of his preferred Nikon camera, he began focusing on the people he encountered abroad, candid images that captured more than just a moment in time. “The majority of the world is not white and perfect; they’re people of color, and we should accept that,” says Timiraos, whose 20-year work career in the Northeast included roles as chief financial officer and restaurant owner before he and Arthur moved to South Florida in 2003. “When you sit down and talk to people in other countries—which I have so many times—you realize something. Yes, their skin color is different. Maybe their lifestyle and religious beliefs aren’t the same. And maybe they dress differently. But they’re as good and as hard-working as you and I. They’re trying to contribute to the world around them. [In those ways], they’re no different than we are. But, sometimes, what is taught is the complete opposite.” A recent travel adventure, his 2018 cruise to Cuba, pushed hed the author of several photography books (including a series of classical nudes) to pen a biographical work. The recently released A Time to Look Back: Growing Up During the Cuban Revolution chronicles icles a five-year period (1958-63) in his childhood when the Havananaborn Timiraos was sent by his parents to the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan—the largest exodus of childrenn in the Western Hemisphere. It’s a book, like the photographs he has shared with Lifestyle, that speaks to the diversity that’s been a cornerstone of our democracy. “When the Cubans were coming into this country, there was a huge network of religious organizations, corporate ate donations, and even government involvement, and they helped ped to set up these families—families who more than contributed to this country,” Timiraos says. “We tend to forget that. The contributions that immigrants can make in the U.S. can be substantial. “It’s always been an important part of our growth.”

QUEBEC CITY (SEPTEMBER 2019) “The sounds of a harp in a concert hall or in the middle of a busy street always makes me feel like I’m in a dream. Outside the main entrance to the Cathedral-Basilica of NotreDame de Quebec, this man was playing a harp with his eyes closed. He seemed to be embracing the instrument and his music with much love; the emotional connection was very visual.” LMGFL.COM | OCTOBER 2021

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA (AUGUST 2016) “We were riding the free mass transit back to our hotel. I noticed this extremely tall gentleman sitting across from me. He must have been 6 feet, 5 inches. I placed the camera on my lap, pointed it in his direction, and snapped three or four pictures. … I’m fascinated by his look, by the stress in his face. It was late in the afternoon; I could imagine that he had a difficult construction job that day. He had these raggedy boots on that are not in the picture. For such a strong man, it felt like [life] had beaten him up a bit.”

MADRID, SPAIN (NOVEMBER 2017) “Walking through the Jardines de Sabatini in Madrid, I passed a young gay couple sitting on a wall facing the fountains. I turned and saw the sunlight shining down on them while clouds created dark shadows on the background, much like a stage setting. … [They were] holding hands and being very emotional and in love. Twenty years ago, this scene would not be possible. Today, it’s a normal scene in Spain.”

MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE, KENYA (JANUARY 1994) “Visiting a camp and home to Maasai families in Kenya was extremely educational. As we entered their camp, all the women—most of them pregnant by the same person—stood in line and chanted as we walked past them. They were very hospitable and encouraged us to visit inside their huts. Their colorful dress and jewelry were [such a] contrast to the late-afternoon sky.”

MUMBAI (MARCH 2018) “One of my favorite trips was to Northern India. It [can be disturbing] to see the slums and poverty in some areas, but they don’t see themselves as poor. They work like crazy; people tend to have two and three jobs at a time. One day, our tour took us at 4 in the morning to the fish market. From there, we went to the vegetable market. Thousands upon thousands of people were up at that hour. And then, just like that, the [market areas] were empty. And those people were off to their second jobs. … The culture was so different from anything we’d ever seen. It was like something you’d see on a Hollywood set. I had a difficult time sleeping for three or four weeks after we returned.”

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY (JUNE 2019) “Walking through the side streets in Budapest near our apartment, I passed these five men resting from their construction job. Half a block later, I turned around, crossed the street and photographed them. [Notice how] all five men are entertaining themselves during their break in their own way.”

ANGKOR WAT, SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA (NOVEMBER 2012) “I was about to sit and take a short break in the shade from the heat and humidity of Siem Reap. I turned around and immediately shot this scene. The colors of the monks’ robes against the dark stone background of one of the temples in Angkor Wat—combined with a grey sky and powder blue clouds—gave this photo a threedimensional look.”

goals have always been the same— provide our guests with opportunities to relax and reconnect with their friends, families and loved ones.” NEW ON THE HORIZON Despite the ongoing challenges of COVID-19 and its variants, major lines such as MSC and Celebrity are sailing full-speed ahead, drumming up excitement with perks like bigger ships, new ports and even private islands. MSC Cruises was successful in launching two new ships in 2021— MSC Seashore and MSC Virtuosa— giving cruise-goers 19 vessels to now choose from. And that number is expected to increase to 23 by 2025. “Alongside our aggressive growth, we have a strong commitment to the environment,” Rodríguez says. “We are working toward a more sustainable future with a commitment to reach net carbon neutral operations by 2050.” When it comes to U.S. cruising, MSC’s new homeport of Port Canaveral gives passengers easier access to popular destinations in the Bahamas and Caribbean. In addition, the line’s recently debuted private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, provides a bonus stop for its Caribbean

itineraries—featuring 2 miles of white sandy beaches, numerous restaurants and bars, and other adventure-packed land and sea excursions exclusively for MSC passengers. “We are also very excited that our newest ship, MSC Seashore, launched in August in the Mediterranean, will make her debut in Miami this November, offering our guests the most outdoor space of any MSC Cruises ship.”

MSC Seashore also will be equipped with next-generation health and safety technology; it’s the line’s first ship with “Safe Air” technology, which sanitizes all air with UV-C light technology, eliminating 99 percent of all viruses and bacteria, Rodríguez says. Not to be outdone, Celebrity is bringing the newest luxury ship from its groundbreaking Edge series to South Florida in fall 2022. Celebrity Beyond (which launches next April) will sail her maiden Caribbean season from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Beyond features world-class amenities such as the Retreat, Celebrity’s resort-within-a-resort; as well as 30 restaurants, bars and lounges—among them, the new Le Voyage by Celebrity’s culinary ambassador and Michelin-starred chef, Daniel Boulud. In all, nine award-winning Celebrity ships will sail during the 2022-23 Caribbean winter season—including the three Edge Series ships (Beyond, Apex and Edge). They will be joined by four ships (Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Millennium, Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Summit) recently “revolutionized” as part of a multimillion-dollar fleet renovation program. The nine ships (including Celebrity Constellation and Celebrity Reflection) will sail to island destinations from Fort Lauderdale and Miami (as well as from Tampa or San Juan, Puerto Rico) connected to an array of four- to 11-night itineraries—including once-in-a-lifetime Panama Canal voyage. Celebrity has added to its already five-star experience with an “always included” program that folds Wi-Fi, drinks and tips into a cruise purchase—as well as a “cruise with confidence” program that offers flexible cancellations and best-price guarantees.

ALL ABOARD Carnival, meanwhile, recently launched its newest ship, Mardi Gras, from PortMiami—becoming the first cruise ship in the Americas to be powered by nontoxic, eco-friendly liquefied natural gas. It’s also the first ship to feature a roller coaster, plus restaurant concepts by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, Food Network personality Guy Fieri and retired NBA star Shaquille O’Neal. “Mardi Gras’ sister ship, Carnival Celebration, is set to debut from PortMiami in late 2022, coinciding with our 50th birthday festivities and operating weeklong cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas,” Gulliksen adds. Though the 18 months and change have been challenging, many in the industry agree that the lessons learned will lead cruise lines to create even better experiences for passengers. “We’ve learned a great deal about the loyalty and dedication of our guests, employees and partners,” Gulliksen says. “They have been with us through thick and thin— we don’t know where we would be without them.” Adds MSC’s Rodríguez: “Even prior to the pandemic, we have always focused on protecting the health and safety of our guests and crew. We adapted quickly because we already have this experience in what we do every day—it’s in our DNA. “No other vacation right now offers the level of health and safety that a cruise offers, and these measures are in place to give guests the peace of mind they need to enjoy their vacation [and] to relax.”

Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wave… ABOUT ME “Where are you from originally?” This, a common question in S. Florida, I proudly answer born and raised in the ‘Cruising Capital of the World’ Miami, Florida. My love for cruising began at 4 yearsold on my first cruise aboard S.S. Emerald Seas (1984). Growing up in a large family, cruising was always the best vacation option for 50 – 70, multi-generational, family members. Remembering fondly the Captain’s Dinner, the commemorative photo in front of the life preserver and midnight buffets, to which, I was fortunate to accompany my grandmother. I graduated with a B.S. in Marketing, Hospitality & Business Administration from Johnson & Wales University, then almost immediately started working with Royal Caribbean Group (RCG) and Carnival Cruise Lines shy of 15 years collectively. I became a Cruise Planners Franchisee in March of 2020 with 5 continents, 150+ cities, and 30+ cruises crossed off my travel list.

CRUISING TOWARDS A COMEBACK Recently I sailed on Celebrity Apex, July 24, 2021, Greek Isles Cruise. RCG, made me feel at ease with their Healthy at Sea program; the protocols and boarding process were clear. I was impressed with the onboard employees’ commitment in ensuring our health and well-being. Public health being top priority with an uncompromised guest experience being of no less value, allowing me to confidently book my clients on their long-awaited cruise and bid them Bon Voyage!

SEAS THE VALUE “Why should I book with you?” That’s the main question Travel Advisors get, and it’s my favorite to answer because of the expression it brings to the face of my ‘newly’ acquired clients. I offer my clients decreased stress while planning their vacation; utilizing my destination and industry knowledge to create their ideal experience. Leveraging established partnerships with cruise and land vendors enables me to provide the best value. While travelling, you get the same service and support, one point of contact who’s advocating on your behalf. Why book through a Travel Advisor? Simply put; the unparalleled service and support during the whole planning and booking experience! My clients will say they value the insight, experience and guidance offered at NO ADDITIONAL COST making the real question, “Why would anyone NOT book through a Travel Advisor?”

CANCÚN COMES ALIVE A beachfront Marriott property invites travelers to stay awhile—and revel in all that this contemporary resort on the Yucatán Peninsula has to offer By Kevin Kaminski

H

istory is a matter of perspective when it comes to Cancún. While it’s true that the Maya civilization flourished in southeast Mexico back in the day—“the day” being circa 250 to 900 A.D.—little about its current allure is steeped in centuries-old lore. In fact, as recently as the 1960s, Cancún was a mostly uninhabited stretch of sand-swept dunes and mangroves that only a trio of coconut planation caretakers called home. By the 1970s, however, bulldozers were transforming the landscape and reimagining the potential of a city that hugs the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Tourism was the future. And for good reason. Americans were flying the friendly skies like never before to destinations that felt exotic—and accessible. During the ’60s, the number of U.S. tourists visiting the Caribbean had quadrupled. Why couldn’t a city with its own idyllic beaches and an offshore coral reef (the Mesoamerican, stretching more than 600 miles from Mexico to Central America) second in size only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef capture its share of travel enthusiasts? The answer gradually revealed itself in the years after the first hotels opened (1974). People not only came to Cancún, but they were in no hurry to leave.

168

OCTOBER 2021 | LMGFL.COM

Decades later, the numbers continue to bear that out. In 2019, the last full year of tourism before the COVID-19 pandemic, some 6.15 million international tourists visited Cancún (the second most-popular destination in the country behind Mexico City). Nearly 70 percent of tourists vacation at least five days. It’s no surprise then that a company such as Marriott would plant its flag in the white sand overlooking the Caribbean Sea—and do so with a kick-back-and-stayawhile kind of escape in mind. There are no ancient ruins to explore at Marriott Cancún Resort, but time does have a way of standing still at the sprawling property in the heart of the city’s Hotel Zone. THE VIBE: Marriott Cancún Resort (not to be confused with its adjacent neighbor, JW Marriott Cancún Resort & Spa) does have roots in the Hotel Zone, a 14-mile island strip that boasts some 70 properties. The resort originally opened its doors in 1990, but a $25 million renovation in 2017, and additional upgrades since then, have cast its spaces in a refreshed and sophisticated light. It starts in a jaw-dropping lobby (unveiled in May) that functions as far more than a place to check-in and check-out. Beautifully rendered in marbleized beige and cream tones—with polished terrazzo flooring, and chic, contemporary furnishings—the

elongated, compartmentalized design sets an inviting tone, including framed views of the palm-lined grounds and oceanfront pool. The centerpiece of the new lobby is the Great Room, the redesigned bar area and gathering spot with a dramatic ceiling treatment that recalls a star-filled sky. The real stars, however, rest on the bar’s backlit shelving—a world-class collection of Mexican whiskeys and mezcals that leave little doubt about the dominant spirits pervading the resort. THE ACCOMMODATIONS: Standard rooms at the Marriott Cancún, 412 in all, provide ample space (and many have ocean views). But the suite life (there are 38) is where it’s at. The Executive suite (nearly 600 square feet) includes a king-size bed, living room and double balcony. The four Magna suites each span 835 square feet, with a guaranteed ocean view, wet bar, spacious bathroom, and a double balcony. Then there’s the Presidential suite, all 2,000 square feet of it, with a fully equipped kitchen, living and dining rooms, two balconies—and a terrace with a whirlpool bath. It takes some effort to leave your feather bed cocoon in the morning (a pillowtop mattress adds to the comfort), but there are plenty of other ways to relax and recharge. THE AMENITIES: The resort spa offers a standard slate of massages, facials, and body treatments, plus, there’s a fitness center with weights, cardio equipment, and a his/ her sauna. But no one is coming to Marriott Cancún for the StairMaster. The social center of the property is an epic tropical pool with a swim-up bar to complement La Isla, the open-air bar/grill that serves a variety of appetizers, salads and sandwiches. The beachfront scene is equally enticing, especially given the brilliant turquoise waters that look like they’ve been color-corrected for dramatic effect. The resort’s recreation staff has been known to organize outdoor fun like beach volleyball, water aerobics, trivia, and cooking classes; activities might or might not be limited given the COVID climate at the time of your travels. There also are two hard courts for tennis fans. THE FOOD: As if travelers needed more reasons to make the resort their temporary home away from home, Marriott Cancún boasts seven specialty restaurants that satisfy a variety of appetites. Among the highlights: Champion’s serves up burgers and wings (and 40 TVs) for the sports bar crowd. Street-style Asian cuisine (think ramen, sushi, and sashimi) takes center stage at Kasai. The Teppanyaki chefs at Mikado put on a fiery show at designated grilling tables, resulting in traditional Japanese/Thai dishes. Sasi Thai, with its thatched roofs, flickering lanterns and bungalow ambience, offers a striking outdoor setting from which to enjoy dishes such as gaeng phed gai (chicken curry in coconut milk) and par goong (sauteed shrimp with chili, mint and lemongrass). Back on the powdery sand, SacBé Beach Shack is yet another scene-stealer with swinging bar stools, Moroccan-style driftwood tables, oversized pillows that serve as seats, and a Castaway charm that’s enhanced

The abbreviated menu of Mexican comfort food with Caribbean flavors receives a gourmet spin during the mezcal-pairing events the property can arrange. During a recent stay, Miguel Benavente poured offerings from his family’s namesake brand of mezcal to go with small-plate dishes (including octopus chicharron with roasted tomato sauce and sprinkled pork rind crumbs) and even dessert (a habanero chocolate brownie with white chocolate caramel and honey liqueur). IN ADDITION: Adventure seekers can book any number of outdoor experiences in and around Cancún, everything from zip-line courses and ATV tours to all-day sailing trips and all-inclusive explorations of archeological sites.
