W
hen it comes to home furnishings, one size does not always fit all. When furniture pieces need a few inches trimmed off, London Fine Furniture has the answer. “A specialty at our store is customization,” says Harold Duesbury, owner with his wife, Linda. “It’s what sets us apart from other stores.” If a customer wants a headboard six inches taller than the display model or needs a dresser six inches shorter to fit a space, Duesbury has manufacturers who are happy to accommodate. “They’ll do whatever you want.”
This retailer deals with manufacturers that construct specialty furniture pieces. Duesbury cites the example of a recent customer seeking a bench that looked like a church pew. He contacted a supplier who quickly responded with a picture of a similar bench recently built for another client. London Fine Furniture’s suppliers offer myriad choices of woods in numerous colours and have dozens of selections of knobs and handles. One of the upholstery companies that Duesbury uses offers more than 400 fabrics. Customers can have a specific piece – like a sectional – built just for them, in their desired size and shape. Duesbury says. “With us, you can build the sec-
tional the way you want. You can add a chaise or a cuddler (That’s a bigger chaise for two people.) or just choose a regular sectional with options for colour or fabric such as leather.” That ability to mix and match also applies to combining pieces from more than one company. For example, when buying a dining room set, Duesbury says customers will sometimes pick a table from one manufacturer and then look around and find a set of chairs from another. “They all have wood colours that are very similar,” he says. “And most of the companies have 15 or 20 different styles. So, pick what you like, and we’ll make it happen.” n
