local triathlon club raise over £30,000 in 24 hours for the mnd association

Local triathlon club, Black Country Triathletes have recently completed an enormous challenge in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association - a staggering amount of over £32,000 was raised by a phenomenal group of swimmers donated by wonderfully generous family, friends and fellow triathletes.

The swim challenge was organised after the clubs swim coach Alan Bagnall sadly passed away last summer after a short but valiant battle against Motor Neurone Disease. Alan had been the club swim coach for nearly 20years, helping many of the members of the club achieve great success in triathlon events locally and around the world.

Who would have thought it? Fifty-two swimmers signed up for a journey into the unknown. The challenge which took place on the 28th to 29th December. The swimmers embarked of the challenge of swimming 24 miles, in teams of 2 over a 24 hour period, with the initial target of raising £24,000! Club Chair Andy Southall could not have been more delighted to have exceeded the target amount and by so much.

The success would not have been possible without a huge amount of help and support, especially from our club volunteers, who kept the swimmers fed, watered and, most importantly - motivated. The event would not have been possible without their help.

The event took place at Wombourne Leisure Centre and was started by Toby Robinson, the local Commonwealth Games 4th place finisher in the 10km open water swim who really showed the swimmers how it should be done

The final hour in the pool was started by Alan’s family and was joined by the Mayor of Birmingham! Andy Street.

About the swimmers. They were just a bunch of ordinary athletes who set out to just swim 12 miles each over 24 hours. 12 miles!!! An unbelievable achievement. Some battled through sickness and fatigue, but the sense of camaraderie displayed in each lane and the whole pool kept everyone battling on.

The feeling of accomplishment and pride at what they all achieved should stay with them all for a long time and has given them the confidence to continue to pursue your sporting goals.

Congratulations, everyone, on a truly memorable 24 hours.
