Retail Matters

Welcome

Stuart Johnson Retail Controller, Landmark Wholesale

From the first ball being kicked on June 11th to the final whistle going one month later, the football World Cup in South Africa will have the nation gripped. Family & friends will gather around the TV sets in homes up and down the country to support Rooney, Lampard and co in the greatest footballing tournament in the world.

Even if your home team didn’t qualify, there is no doubt that the World Cup will be big business as one of the most viewed televised events on earth. Four years ago the peak home viewing audience for one of England’s games topped 16 million. With South Africa operating in a similar time zone to the UK and with the eternal hope of a glorious British Summer, the opportunity for World Cup parties is huge and so, therefore, is the sales potential for Independent Retailers during this time.

Net a result this World Cup With a host of brands getting behind the England team and tournament in general, the World Cup can be quite a daunting prospect for Independent Retailers to navigate and ensure they make the most of the opportunity. Retail Matters has the lowdown of everything an Independent Retailer will need to know to also be a World Cup Winner this summer. In this issue we cover:

• • •

The products and categories you should be focussing on. How to manage supply and demand during the highs and lows of the competition. Making the most impact in-store with promotions and displays.

Also there is a pull-out and keep tournament fixture list so you won’t miss a game – on pages 18 & 19. There’s also a feature on the Energy Drinks category, How to create a Poundzone and the Core range listing with their Recommended Retail Selling Prices. Finger’s crossed for a fantastic summer of success!

Retail Matters Football Fever Be a World Cup Winner – Ones to Watch

The success or failure of this year’s World Cup for Independent Retailers nationwide not only rests on the fortunes of the England team but also how well Retailers manage their stock, from having the right ranges in place, to good availability throughout the tournament. Traditionally sales are buoyant as England progress through the competition so take advantage of this opportunity. If the last World Cup is anything to go on, lager sales in 2006 were bigger than grocery at Christmas and therefore the beer brands are gearing up for another phenomenal summer of activity.

6

Traditionally the beer brands do well and are the driver of football-related drink sales. Budweiser is the official beer sponsor of the tournament, whilst Carlsberg sponsor the England team, with both brands aiming to maximise sales with a huge marketing and promotional drive centred around the World Cup. Other beer brands are also following suit. Watching the World Cup is a social event and no longer a ‘men-only’ occasion. Groups of friends, male and female, will get together to watch key games and therefore opening up the opportunity to promote a broader spectrum of drinks to your Customers.

ISSUE 06 APR-JUN 2010

• The feel good factor… as England do well, expect the average basket spend of your Customers to increase. • The Sun Shines… add a spell of hot sunny weather and this can significantly improve sales for a World Cup match day with bbqs and ice cold drinks added to the mix.

Wine will be big business with many of the Wine brands using the World Cup as a marketing tool with on-pack and wholesale promotions linked in with the football. It is a fantastic opportunity for South African Wines - as the fastest selling nation in UK wine sales this could be a major winner of the tournament. Other drink brands are also trying to cash in on the World Cup including spirits and ARTDs, for example Beverage Brands is running a World Cup campaign surrounding its WKD brand so look out for these In-Depot. It’s worth seeing what brands are big at your local Landmark Wholesaler as well as which brands are being heavily promoted on TV, radio and in the national press and stocking up accordingly.

• Cash in on the South African Connection … South African wine will be a good alternative to the traditional lager sales and cater for the female Customers. •

Novelty Products… beware they will have a limited shelf life for the duration of the World Cup but will make ideal impulse purchases for the footie-mad Customer.

• Half time snacks… look after Customers who want a quick and easy half-time snack with no fuss or preparation – microwave and pot meals should do well throughout the tournament. • Stock more Multi-pack Beer and Cider - your Customers will be looking for larger packs ahead of the big game.

The key here is to have these ranges chilled wherever possible. Customers will be using their local shop for the convenience and also for last minute purchases on their way to watch a game, so make sure you have plenty of chilled beer and wine available. Have chilled Multi-packs available. Also bags of ice are good in particularly hot weather. Snacks, crisps and bbq products will all be key sellers throughout the tournament. Try cross promoting with other World Cup associated categories to drive sales. T: 01908 255 300 E: landmark@lmkcc.co.uk

Energy Drinks Give your sales a boost by being alert to the Energy Drinks market. This fast-moving category is growing year-on-year, up +9.8% on last year and is worth around £708m in the UK alone. It is the only sub-category in impulse in growth.* Thanks to the brand leaders Red Bull and Lucozade, functional drinks have exploded onto the scene in recent years with a growing number of brands and variants emerging into the market.

A Shot in the Arm for your Sales Know Your Customer Energy drinks appeals to a variety of different Shoppers from business people needing a kickstart to the working day, young adults looking for a boost ahead of a long night partying or gym goers wanting a functional drink ahead of a training session. So when looking at your Energy Drinks offering in-Store it is worth remembering that different Shopper missions need to be catered for and merchandised accordingly.

Despite the vast number of sub brands and variants, 82% of sales** come from the top three brands: 1. Lucozade Energy 2. Red Bull 3. Lucozade Sport So don’t over clutter the fixture with excessive brands. Both these brands enjoy high profile marketing activity, for example Red Bull sponsor adrenaline sports such as Formula 1 and the X-Fighter, whilst Lucozade is closely associated with professional sports from the Premiership to athletics. They are aspirational brands which your Customers will seek out on your fixtures so make sure they are in stock and well presented. However it is also worth considering a ‘value’ option, for example LSV – available exclusively to the Independent Sector via your local Landmark Wholesaler. Since its launch just over a year ago, the range has expanded to encompass 11 energy, glucose and isotonic drinks under the LSV brand, allowing Independent Retailers to have a full compliment of Own Brand next to the brand leaders. The launch has proved fantastically successful, helping to grow the category and generate new sales rather than steal market share from the leading brands. LSV offers fantastic value to both you and the Consumer, with as much as 47.7% POR for Retailers.

s p i T r e t s o o B 1. Follow the Leader – 77% of sales come from the top three brands so keep these in stock.

For example why not try merchandising Energy Drinks like Red Bull alongside news and magazines to catch Customers getting their daily paper and looking for a kickstart to the day. 20% of Energy Drink sales are made in the afternoon, for Consumers looking to combat the postlunch slump.

2. Add NPD carefully – don’t over clutter the fixture with excessive brands. 3. Own Brand offers Value – Brands like LSV are growing the category whilst offering fantastic value to the Consumer and Retailer alike. 4. Watch the Trends – add lucrative sub-categories like Shots to your offering.

Pocket Power Rocketing into the market over the last year is ‘Shots’ – a pocket version of the stimulant drinks. Shots have had major success in the US with the market worth $0.5bn. The UK is set to have similar success with the market potential valued at £50m+. Again the brand leaders Red Bull, Lucozade and Relentless are leading the way in this subcategory with many other brands jumping on the back of this sensation, including LSV Shots. Shots appeal to Consumers wanting a quick boost without wanting to drink a full can. Due to its small size, they are ideal for placing on the counter and attracting impulse sales.

16

5. Merchandise to your advantage – cross promote Energy Drinks with the morning newspaper and place Shots on the counter to attract impulse sales. *Nielsen MAT 23.01.10 ** TNS World Panel Purchase Sept 09

Retail Matters Are you in the Poundzone? Grab yourself a slice of the £1 market The grocery retail market has been assaulted with a host of products marked at the £1 price point. From Tesco and Asda to discount Retailers like Poundland, all have thrived on offering discounted brands at the £1 mark promoted heavily n-Store with punchy POS. It appears the £1 offer is really connecting with the Consumer who wants great value in this current financial climate. These are compelling reasons as to why Independent Retailers should fight back with their own Poundzone and create a focal point of value to turn the heads of their bargain-seeking Customers. Landmark Wholesale Member DCS Europe is Britain’s leading distributor of toiletries and household goods, and its Chairman and Chief Executive Denys Shortt has been instrumental in developing and driving the Poundzone concept within the Independent Wholesale and Retail Sector. In partnership with leading brand owners, DCS has managed to harness the volume opportunity to provide household names at the £1 price point. DCS has produced a full colour catalogue and planograms for advice on how to display your Poundzone range in-Store.

22

This is not exclusive to households goods, Retailers can create a Poundzone covering any category in-Store. To further drive the Poundzone concept, DCS has developed ‘Poundzone Store in a Box’, which are free-standing display units branded with the Poundzone livery. These stands are provided free of charge and offers a no risk way to add new sales to categories that are not traditionally key footfall generators in small stores. If you don’t have space for a stand, utilise a gondola-end preferably at the front of the Store.

Top Tips for Poundzone Success in your Store 1.

Identify a high traffic area at the front of the Store to site a Poundzone.

2.

Select sufficient range to fill the space allocated and keep it wellmaintained.

3.

Use the dedicated Poundzone POS and signage to help promote the good value available

4.

Implementing a Poundzone can help you generate the impression of offering good value across the whole Store.

5.

Look for £1 price points across other products in your Store. For more information visit www.poundzone.co.uk
