BALLITO TO UMHLANGA

Something borrowed, something blue

W

EDDINGS – the spectrum of emotion is real! For some of us, they induce major eye rolls, and it can all go so horribly wrong; from bad food (or no food), to awkward speeches littered with tasteless humour, family politics, or humiliating wardrobe malfunctions. My partner is a chef, and for many years his catering company ran high-end weddings in some of the remotest parts of South Africa.

What to do

28 September: Clean Sweep

Join Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Ballito on Salt Rock Main Beach for an epic pick-up! From 8:30am, you too can be part of the movement to rid the ocean of plastic waste. Call Siva for more information on 032 946 7800.

26-29 September: Moving Mountains

This year, the White Mountain Festival in central Drakensberg features Ross Charles and Shotgun Tori among other big-name artists, plus a host of activities like yoga classes, with craft food and drink, all against a spectacular backdrop. Phone 036 353 3437 or visit c-weed.com/wmf and quicket.co.za

5 October: Calling all Creatives

Jacks Paint Ballito will introduce the Rustoleum Range available in store with a demo arts and craft class. Guests will complete small projects, with tutorials on spray techniques, helpful hints and application guidelines. You could also win a Jacks Paint voucher to the value of R500 or a Rustoleum hamper to the value of R500. Call 032 940 0620 or email sales@jacksballito.co.za

“I want an ice cream bar for our dessert!” a bride would demand for her December wedding… in the Timbavati… under a baobab. “I forgot the wedding cake!” an event planner would yell… at 9:15pm… five minutes before the cake cutting… on the banks of the Sabie River. (Okay, so maybe all the eye rolls should belong to my husband!) Weddings have inspired a host of films, novels and a barrage of reality television shows, where we are the hapless voyeurs to the wreckage of bad weddings. But then again, they can also be filled with utter joy. I met my husband at a wedding 12 years ago, where he spun me around the dance floor but graciously ensured we turned in one direction only, keeping my wrap dress from flapping open (other wrap dress-wearers will attest to this technique). My friends and I danced

so much at my own wedding that we broke the dance floor. I recall the scent of sweet peas in the spring time at my best friend’s nuptials, and being brought to tears by talented musicians serenading the happy couple, laughing out loud at hilarious speeches by witty orators, and gasping at some breath-taking dresses. It can also go so, so right. I find September is the perfect time to reflect on weddings. The birds and the bees, and all that. The weather is warmer, we begin to get wafts of cut grass and jasmine, and the air is heady with love and romance. If you turn to page seven, you can continue this sentiment, as we talk all things matrimonial. We sat down with three of the hottest tailors and designers in SA, to chat about spring/summer trends, and for a sneak peak at two local weddings and their head-turning dresses. I was most impressed by Grant van den Berg, proprietor of Frank Bespoke, a gent’s tailor who offers exquisite craftsmanship. In fact, his garments just opened the Men’s Health magazine Mont Blanc event in Cape Town, and he’ll soon be opening his first KZN branch in 2020. We also dreamed up a honeymoon feature, turning our attention to local destinations to suit all budgets, and that check all the boxes from beach and bush to the berg. No passport required. Our tech guru Marc Forrest also unpacks how weddings have been affected by the digital age on page four, with handy apps and websites to help make your big day run smoothly, (unlike the Sabie River wedding planner.) Here’s to a wedding that will only bring you joy! Until next time,

A Love Affair WITH HAIR

Durban-born Gerald Wells created a monumental brand in the haircare business. Ballito is lucky to have both a flagship Gerald Wells Salon and The Barber by Gerald Wells, now under the guidance of Gerald’s son Wesley Wells, who was instrumental in the building of the company.

G

The Gerald Wells Team

ERALD WELLS is a legendary figure in the hair care industry. He has been styling hair for over 30 years and running his own salons since 1984. Gerald was one of the top stylists in the world at 21, has won numerous awards including Photographic Hairdresser of the Year, and has lived and worked in the fashion capitals of the world where he styled icons like Princess Diana and the Rolling Stones.

His passion for hair and his ethos of professionalism, innovation and customer care shines through at the brand new Gerald Wells Hair Professional salon and The Barber, both located in the fast transforming Lifestyle Centre in Ballito Wesley Wells was a professional surfer before he decided to enter the haircare business fulltime. Although he became an apprentice at the age of 16, Wesley’s heart lay in the business side of haircare, and he played a key role in the inception and development of satellite business, Splush. The haircare retail stores set a trend. “We were the first to take haircare out of the salon, into an environment that’s unintimidating,” explains Wesley. Now partnered

with haircare giant, Twincare, the Splush stores have become the go-to for salon quality products for home use. Now, with their two Ballito stores; the Gerald Wells salon and The Barber by Gerald Wells, both situated at the Lifestyle Centre, Wesley is shaking things up with head-turning specials, competitions and a team of stylists who are the best in their fields. The salon will also soon undergo a makeover of its own, with their client’s comfort top of mind. Expect a plush waiting lounge, great coffee, select menu items from neighbouring Toast café, plus the convenience of the in-house beauty salon. Gerald Wells is your new onestop shop when it comes to beauty and pampering. You can enjoy manis and pedis, a Dermalogica facial, massage or waxing, all in addition to Maureen de Jager, Wesley Wells the full haircare offering – without & Andrea Durham leaving the comfort of the salon. They’re also expanding their retail offering, so you can shop for all of your home haircare products, and even your skincare, in-store. They’ve collected a team of highly skilled stylists, many of whom trained under the Gerald Wells brand. From braiding to blondes, cuts and extensions, there is a specialist to assist you. The salon is also large enough to host your entire wedding crew or pamper party. The Barber is equally as pampering, with gents’ comfort and needs in mind. Cut-throat shaves, waxing, colouring, and old-school barbering are all on offer, and youngsters are also welcome. Prepare to walk out the door feeling on top of the world.

ASHTON SPORTS WRAP Mr Craig Currin - Senior College Head of Sport

T

erm 3 was yet another jampacked sporting term with a variety of sporting codes being on offer. Not only did we have a busy sport term but we also had many exciting new additions to our incredible list of facilities. Our main cricket oval saw the installation of brand new LED sport lights which make playing sport at night not only a possibility but also aligns with international standards. The third term also saw the long awaited completion of the new Legacy Indoor Sports Arena, which will cater for indoor hockey and netball. The last new addition is the completion of eight new cricket nets that allowed our cricket teams to start ahead of the cricket season.

Action Netball We had an extremely successful term of netball with many of our A teams making the finals and taking home silverware in this term’s action netball league hosted at Durban North Arena. Congratulations to all our teams for an outstanding term of netball. A special congratulations to the girls who were also rewarded for their efforts on the court by being selected for various KZN action netball teams or other representative teams. Football Our football had an extremely busy

season with over 130 games played in nine weeks of sport. Our girls played a total of 71 matches while our boys played 60 matches. Our team numbers have also increased this year on last year’s numbers with five teams in each section with some teams having extended squads. Golf Our golf team participated in the D&D B league which included a number of competitive golfing schools. Our team, comprising of many junior players had a great season only losing one match the entire season, to eventual league winners Thomas More. Our core group of players have a couple years ahead of them at Ashton and therefore we can expect even better results going forward. Indoor Hockey – Boys Our indoor season was most definitely one to remember. With our u18 team winning the B league in 2018, we were promoted into the A league which includes schools such as Westville Boys, Northwood, Clifton, Kearsney, DHS and Glenwood. This was a great advert for Ashton sport and this just shows what Ashton is capable of producing. With the opening of our new Legacy Indoor Sports Arena we can only look forward to our indoor hockey program to excel in years to come.

Mountain biking This term, in conjunction with sugar rats at Sugar Rush, introduced an Ashton MTB team which competes in the Spur mountain biking series. The team will continue to grow in 2020 as we enter more of the mountain biking series. If you would like to find out more about the mountain biking please contact the sport department. Rugby 7’s The rugby 7s season started the very first weekend back with our Ashton u18s participating in the Crawford La Lucia tournament over two days. This is a tier one tournament that sees Ashton take on schools such as Michaelhouse, Westville and Kearsney. The final was played between Kuswag (2018 champions) and Hillcrest High School. And the winner was decided after full-time and extratime, by the least amount of yellow cards. Hillcrest was declared winners at the end of a very successful day. Tennis – Girls We had a very exciting season of tennis being able to host matches on our very own tennis courts for the first time. We are extremely privileged to boast brand new state-of-the-art tennis courts. Our

first team girls had a very strong season this term with excellent results beating schools such as DGHS, Maris Stella and narrowly losing to Danville. We look forward to a busy fourth term, particularly in cricket, but also for all our preseason netball and hockey in the fourth term. Ashton will have another first for the North Coast; we will host our very own Friday night T20 cricket series called the AM/PM night series. 12 schools will participate throughout the fourth term on our very own flood-lit cricket fields. We will also be starting preseason hockey for boys and girls as well as preseason indoor hockey for the girls in the teams for 2020. We will also be doing preseason netball and swimming in preparation for what will prove to be a very exciting first term in 2020. Thank you to all our players and coaches for the hard work and dedication over the past 10 weeks. Thank you also to all the parents who support our Ashton sport program. We hope all our players have a good break and we look forward to a fantastic fourth term.

The NEW AGE WEDDING Since we’re talking weddings, we asked tech guru Marc Forrest how to use digital best for your big day.

L

AST week my wife and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. We both realised quickly how much the world has changed.

IN OUR MONTHLY PROMOTIONS

Back then, social media wasn’t even a blip on the radar. We had to wait a few weeks for our pictures to be printed on real photo paper. Now they appear on social media in real time. Wedding invites can now be sent via email and the RSVP’s get submitted online in real time, to a platform that your wedding planner has access to, to keep count of all the guests. There are also apps and sites out there to make the big day even easier. For the bridal couple who want to keep track of everything, the WeddingHappy App helps you keep tabs on all the ins and outs of the big day. WeddingHappy is a smart wedding planning app that builds

a customized schedule, along with a to-do checklist so you can work out exactly what needs to get done and by when. Alongside that is payment tracking, a spending summary, options for co-ordinating vendor contact details and the ability to sync with other users. Head to weddinghappy.com or download the app. Canva allows you to easily create all your invitations, table settings, and even a photo album once all the photos from the big day have been delivered. It offers thousands of pre-designed templates which allow you to quickly create all you need. Go to canva.com or download the app. The Wedding Photo Swop app allows everyone at the wedding to upload all their photos and categorise them to make a crowdsourced photo album. It’s the perfect way to see a different side of the wedding when you can’t get around to everyone on the big day. Visit weddingphotoswap.com or search your app store. Technology has changed the way we get to celebrate this momentous occasion with friends and family from all over the world, but if you prefer privacy remember to ask everyone to refrain from splashing your big day all over the digital space. FOOD ALLERGY?

Happy Baby Baby Organic Probiotic Probiotic Baby Cereal Cereal Gluten Digest Happy Organic Baby BABY’S FIRST FIRST SOLID FOOD A comprehensive enzyme blend formulated to BABY’S SOLID FOOD

The term is bandied about a lot, but in reality having a bona fide food allergy can be life threatening, and what you’re likely looking at is a sensitivity, or an intolerance. Dietitian Kim Wilson spells it out.

W But do you really?

E’VE all asked ourselves whether we have a food allergy; a bit of bloating after that slice of bread leads to thoughts like ‘I must have a gluten allergy’.

There are three terms we associate with an inability to eat certain foods; food allergy, food sensitivity, and food intolerance. The distinction between a food sensitivity and a food intolerance is not always clear (or agreed on), but food allergies may be easier to distinguish. Food allergies can be life-threatening. It’s important to know what to look out for and when to go for tests. Food intolerances or sensitivities may not be life-threatening, but they can make you feel lousy. 1. FOOD ALLERGY Food allergies occur in five to 10 percent of children, and one to three percent of adults. The most common allergies are to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. It only takes a tiny amount of the allergen to trigger a response, which will occur within minutes, and this response can be dangerous. Typical responses include difficulty breathing, swallowing, nausea, vomiting and hives, and it can lead to anaphylaxis. Food allergies need to be diagnosed by a medical doctor or allergy specialist, and this usually involves a combination of blood tests and/or skin prick tests, and often an oral food challenge. The great news is that allergies may be outgrown by kids, with only peanut and tree nut allergies tending to persist into adulthood. 2. FOOD INTOLERANCE Food intolerances may occur in 15 to 20 percent of the population. The most common food intolerances are to fermentable carbohydrates, including milk, legumes, certain vegetables, fruits, grains and sweeteners. Symptoms of food intolerance vary in severity depending on how much you ingest. Symptoms usually begin within 30 minutes or up to 48 hours after eating. Typical responses include digestive issues including bloating, excessive gas, cramps, diarrhea and constipation. Food intolerances can be diagnosed by doing breath tests for breakdown products of fermentable carbohydrates including lactose and fructose. Symptoms can be minimized or avoided by eliminating problem foods. Antibiotic treatment may also help. Food intolerances can be diagnosed at any age, but lactose intolerance is more common in adults.

3.FOOD SENSITIVITY As a newer classification, food sensitivity is less definitive than food allergies and food intolerances. Common symptoms of a food sensitivity are relatively vague. They include headaches, joint pains, digestive distress, skin issues, and just an overall feeling of being unwell. These symptoms can result within a few hours to a few days, and can develop at any age. Food sensitivities have one factor in common with food allergies; there is immune system involvement. This means that you would be able to pick up elevated IgE levels in blood tests. There are quite a few methods of testing, but none of them are accurate. OVERHAUL YOUR DIET The best way to get rid of your symptoms is by avoiding problem foods. Take a holistic approach and establish whether there are underlying health issues that may be affecting the immune system or the gut, and also take into your account your lifestyle and environment. It’s rare that health issues develop in isolation. 1. Do your best to identify the foods that you are unable to tolerate (with blood tests, skin prick tests, breath tests, and a diet history via your medical practitioner).

Avoid your problem foods for at least a couple of weeks before undergoing a ‘food trial’ (with your medical practitioner if it is a true food allergy). Over time you may find that you can reintroduce some foods. Be vigilant with food labels and you need to be ‘that’ person at the restaurant asking a million questions about the menu. You may even have to stick to food you’ve prepared yourself, but it is possible to resolve your food problems this way. K

E took a decision a while ago to turn off the connection to the world of local television via satellite. It was a good decision on the whole because there is more than enough entertainment available via digital streaming services to keep you amused at a fraction of the cost. The one drawback is that it’s generally quite difficult to access live sport if that’s what you are keen to follow.

As it happens, I did want to watch the Springboks play the All Blacks in their first clash of the Rugby World Cup in Japan and a little online research confirmed that this was entirely possible by subscribing to a Virtual Private Network or VPN. Once connected, you can then apparently do just that. It was easy to find a VPN to subscribe to - ExpressVPN was recommended by my online search and the process of digital payment and subsequent setup was a breeze. But that’s where the breeze ended. I had reached the limit of my digital connective ability, and from the cheers and groans (mostly groans) coming from the neighbours, it was clear to me that the game was slipping away. I never did get to watch that first fateful clash of the Titans, but I do have a VPN subscription so I am hopeful that with a little help from someone who knows about these things, I will get to watch the next one. What we did get to see was the first half of the Bok van Blerk concert in Ballito on Saturday night. The advertising power of Radio Life & Style had helped to fill the venue to capacity despite a hiccup from Computicket that had incorrectly indicated that the event was sold out a full week before it actually was. Luckily we were able to help spread the news that tickets were still available and by

Saturday, there was standing room only in the Linc Campus auditorium. I love the Afrikaans music genre but my beloved Sue leans more towards the big international acts that occasionally make their way across the water so this wasn’t really her cup of tea. As a compromise, we decided to attend the first half of the concert and then dash back home before Otis, our adolescent German Shepherd, could finish the bone he had been given as a pacifier, and start deconstructing the lounge suite. The concert was as close as I think we will ever come to the world of Herman Charles Bosman’s Oom Schalk Lourens and friends. This is not in any way a reflection of the performance of Bok and his band on stage, but more an observation of many of the characters in the audience. While Willem Prinsloo’s Peach brandy may not have been on offer in the pop-up refreshment stands outside the auditorium, there seemed to be liberal doses of something similar being dispensed from the backs of the laager of white bakkies in the parking area. This galvanised a generous segment of the audience to exuberant participation whenever the opportunity arose as it frequently did, and to say that Bok brought the house down is almost underplaying it. They came to hear their hero singing the songs that they love and Bok and his band did not disappoint. Sadly, we had already left by the time they really hit their peak but, by all accounts, the anthemic Delarey nearly took the roof off the building! Not even the crushing Springboks’ loss to the All Blacks could diminish the spirit of the Volk in full cry and, although I could not claim any cultural heritage to embrace, I loved the authenticity and originality of this hundred percent home grown product. Luckily I didn’t need a VPN to connect to it!

yle Cronjé, Julia Ferrandi’s mother, never thought her daughter would follow in her footsteps and become a professional dress maker. But after studying at Durban University of Technology, much to her own surprise, she found herself picking up a needle and thread.

“My mom had always been into dressmaking,” says Julia, “and today she’s the engine behind the scenes.” Julia and her mother are 50/50 partners in one of the most sought-after dressmaking businesses in KZN, and indeed beyond. Julia Ferrandi Designs may have Julia’s name on the door, but it’s very much a team effort. Julia’s father, architect Llewellyn Cronjé, is also a well-known local, and Julia’s initial thoughts were of pursuing architecture. “I just love design in general!” she laughs. Her first real foray into bridal wear, was her very own wedding dress, which she and her mom created six years ago for her wedding at Collisheen Estate in 2006. Her most memorable brides have been the ones where there was emotional engagement. “There are so many of these moments where you begin to feel involved in their story,” explains Julia earnestly. Julia notes that there are some strong emerging trends in bridal wear, one of which is a move away from overly ‘flowery’ laces, and more toward geometric patterns. “Dresses are getting less structured,” she adds, commenting that corsets and rigid bridal wear are not as popular as they used to be. Dresses are also moving away from conventional whites, which Julia explains is a harsh tone on most skins anyway. “Especially here in South Africa, our weddings are mostly outdoors,” so Julia suggests taking cues from nature in terms of colour palettes. “There’s definitely a trend to more sexy dresses,” she adds, but there’s a fine line between utilising nude tones and sheer fabrics and going overboard. “It’s a tough balancing act!” she laughs. For Candice Charles, (née Flood, our featured bride), wife of Mike Charles from 88FM Radio Life & Style, Julia took a contemporary bohemian

HE admittedly started out not knowing how to thread a needle, but today, homegrown fashion designer Bianca Warren has won multiple awards, and offers both full retail ranges and bespoke gowns for special occasions. Her first award was won while still studying at Durban University of Technology, where she won best designer in her final year, and the accolades have just kept on coming.

Based in Umhlanga, and having attended Crawford North Coast, Bianca is a great supporter of local manufacturers and communities; housing her very own production line and launching her first boutique in 2011. She first made waves at South African Fashion Week during 2012 and 2013, and supplies boutiques across South Africa and Mauritius, taking inspiration from her international travels. She also designed for former Miss South Africa, Megan Coleman, and has supplied to some of KZN’s leading markets, including the I Heart Market, The Essenwood Road Market and the Shongweni Farmers and Crafters Market. Bianca’s bridalwear frequently makes use of nude fabrics and

embellishments, which combine to perfectly showcase the feminine silhouette. More recently, Bianca received a commission from local Ballito bride, Nadine Nel, to create her dream dress. Nadine had chosen Braeside Weddings and Functions as her venue, conveniently situated just two minutes from Ballito, and offering the complete package from ceremony to reception. This also meant that the beautiful lush gardens of Braeside would be the backdrop for her photographs. “When I went to see Bianca I had two months to have my dress made,” explains Nadine, but she never doubted it would be completed in time. Nadine’s petite frame meant that she required a dress that wouldn’t overwhelm her, and the result was a slim cut, delicate gown, and a showstopping lengthy veil. The rest of her colour palette was bold and bright, so the dress also had to stand out against this backdrop. The hemline completed the look with an intricate scalloped lace trim. “I felt amazing when I put on the dress,” she adds. “I was able to sit and dance comfortably in it too.” Pic - Barry Bowditch Photography

REDUCE YOUR RISK

Is what we’re eating, or drinking, causing cancer? As we fire up the braais over the balmier spring weekends, we asked Dr Rosie Carey to talk carcinogens, and which cancer-causing foods to avoid.

W carcinogenic?

Wh

E all know that there are certain substances that definitively cause cancer but are you aware that many of our seemingly innocent, everyday foods can be

PROCESSED MEATS Processed meats have been classified as a group one carcinogen for colorectal cancer. There are various compounds in meat which, when exposed to high temperatures and preservation methods such as smoking, have the potential to cause colorectal cancer. There are more tenuous links with processed meat to pancreatic and prostate cancer. So, practically, what is your risk? An analysis of data from various studies showed that every 50-gram portion of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by about 18 percent. Processed meats include bacon, polony, salami, Vienna sausages or any meats preserved by curing, salting or smoking. This doesn’t mean that you can never enjoy a traditional English breakfast or tuckshop hotdog again, but rather that you shouldn’t enjoy them every day! Limit your intake of processed meats as much as possible. ALCOHOL Alcohol is another group one carcinogen and has been linked to cancer of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, stomach, liver and breast. Once again, the big question is how do we quantify risk? This is difficult

atsa as everybody pp y hea our l t h reacts que 071 stion 185 differently to s to 1471 Dr R . Ca alcohol, but to osie tch Thu be safe it’s best on 88 rsda F M y s to limit alcohol at 3 :30p intake to two m standard units per day. RED MEAT (especially when braaied) Red meat such as beef, lamb and pork has been classified as a group two A carcinogen, which means that there is a probable cause between red meat and colorectal cancer. Don’t panic! You don’t have to forgo your spring braais; just limit your red meat intake to around 65-100 grams three to four times a week. TRANS-FATTY ACIDS Tran-fatty acids are created during processing food by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid. They are a common ingredient in processed foods because they improve shelf life. Look for the words ‘partially hydrogenated oils’ on the ingredient list. A recent 2018 study looked at the link between a diet high in transfatty acids and found a link between high trans-fatty acid intake and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, oral and oesophageal cancer. There are likely to be many more carcinogens in the food we eat than we are currently aware of, especially food that is highly processed. As a rule of thumb, avoid processed foods and eat and drink in moderation, the latter of which I think is a good policy generally when it comes to food and alcohol.

MOOIMAAK MAKEOVERS SANDRA MAARTENS

The transformation

A

hardworking mom of two, Sandra Maartens had a difficult upbringing that made her swear she’d do whatever she could to ensure her children had an easier path. This didn’t leave her with much time to take care of herself but, fortunately, this was something kykNET’s Mooimaak crew could fix.

The Skin Renewal team - led by Dr. Rulene Maré and therapist Lizanne Burton – were only too happy to give Sandra a lifechanging transformation via a series of treatments that took years off her face.

TIGHTEN UP! SKIN CONCERNS: Sagging Skin • • • • • • • •

Volume Loss Loose Skin Sagging Skin Naso Labial Folds Dull Skin Wrinkles Sagging Eyes Hooded Eyelids

As Sandra’s skin had lost elasticity, a Titan Laser was used to stimulate new collagen growth. While the results become visible over a couple of months, patients also get to enjoy an instant firming effect because heating up the existing collagen and elastin causes it contract. Naturally, Sandra was thrilled!

TREATMENTS: Skin Rejuvenation • • • • • • • •

Dermal Fillers Botulinum Toxin Silhouette Soft® Lift Titan® Laser Jett Plasma Eye Rejuvenation Xela Redermalisation CO2 Laser Carboxytherapy

A LOVELY LIFT Thanks to Silhouette Soft threads, it was possible to give Sandra a knife-free jowl lift. The threads are inserted just under the skin and positioned in a way that creates an instant lift. They then dissolve over the course of a few months, but the look can last for up to three years as their insertion encourages the creation of new collagen.

NO KNIFE, NEW ME Another non-surgical treatment the team used to turn back time for Sandra was a 3D Liquid Facelift. This involved injecting a combination of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to restore volume and plump up certain lines while botulinum toxin could relax wrinkles caused by constant muscle movement. An elated, much more confident-feeling Sandra says she loves her new look. ‘I can highly recommend all the treatments. The results speak for themselves!’

Getting to know… Danielle Anne Basch had her mom for inspiration growing up. She too was a stylist, and encouraged her daughter to develop her skills set early on, leading to Danielle opening her first salon at the tender age of 18. Now, she’s joined the Gerald Wells team in Ballito, where she’s excited to share her lifelong passion for hair.

G

ROWING up in Benoni, which seems to be home to many a proudly South African talent, Danielle grew up in the hair industry. Her mom was always on hand to share her knowledge, and Danielle started working in a salon from a young age. She studied at college once a week for three years while still in high school, and even opened her first salon at just 18 years old.

She’s new in town, but has easily settled into the Ballito groove. Her main strengths are textured cutting, and specialized colouring, but she loves a challenge, so she encourages her clients to give her one! “I hope that my clients feel recharged and rejuvenated,” adds Danielle. “This world is so crazy busy! I want my clients to feel recognized, and special. I have such a love for people. I wear my heart on my sleeve,” she adds. When she’s not making her clients feel glorious, she’s running after her two children Lillian, who is one and fouryear-old Michael.

As part of a national rollout, on Thursday 19 September, 88FM Ballito’s morning DJ Mike Charles attended an impressive launch event at CMH Peugeot Umhlanga, where the brand introduced two exciting new models: the entry-level hatchback/runaround called the Peugeot 108; and the elegant, yet commanding, seven-seater Peugeot 5008, which perches proudly at the top of the SUV range. Managing director of Peugeot Citroën South Africa, Xavier Gobille, said that the new vehicles signify “not only the brand relaunch of Peugeot SA, but of the PSA group in the country”. The multinational PSA Group is the parent company of Peugeot, as well as the likes of DS Automobiles, Opel, and Citroën: a brand that is also set to relaunch in South Africa after pulling out of the country in 2017. “This Peugeot brand relaunch is the first wave of attack by the group, with more to come,” Gobille said. The new Peugeot 108 with its 1.0-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine will start at R179 900. It comes with modern city car must-haves like a seven-inch

touch-screen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. While it’s French styling helps it stand out in the entry-level car bracket, the 108 is also being marketed as one of the safest cars in its class, featuring six airbags: something rarely seen in the segment. On the other end of the scale, the Peugeot 5008 SUV turns heads and certainly makes a statement with its sleek and imposing form. Available in two engine options, both the 1.6-litre THP petrol and a 2.0-litre HDi diesel models are offered in either Allure or GT Line spec. As with its smaller predecessor (the international multi-award winning Peugeot 3008), the 5008 offers effortlessly smooth driving performance, with an interior that has the fit and finish to rival cars with higher price tags than the R600 000 being asked for the top of the range model. This month, Peugeot also announced that every car in its range - from the budget 108 to the giant 5008 SUV - will be sold with a five-year/100 000km comprehensive warranty and service plan known as “Peugeot Pride”. While it faces tough competition, Peugeot hopes the aggressive pricing, standard safety features, and undeniably French sense of style found in their two newest models will entice local motorists and win new fans for the brand that is firmly back in the race.

HOT ON THE TRAIL We’re lucky to have access to Holla Trails on the North Coast; a safe, multi-use outdoor space for trail-running and mountain biking enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels. Life & Style caught up with Holla superfan and Miles for a Million charity drive pundit, Stuart Armit. Q: Where you from, and how long have you been using Holla Trails? A: I’m from Durban North. I started running at Holla in March this year. I needed to get in longer training runs and Holla is also dog friendly. Q: Who do you run with? A: I run with my dog, Gus, during the week; and on the weekends my kids will join me on their bikes. Q: Do you run for fun or do you compete? A: I'm super slow! It takes me on average 10-minutes to complete a kilometre, so there will be no podium finishes for me. Whether its meeting new people on the organised runs, or the solitude of not seeing another person for hours at a time, I just love being out there. Q: Favourite Holla route? A: Our favourite route has to be the Silver. It’s not too strenuous and loads of fun! Q: What do you love most about Holla Trails? A: There is trail for days! Many of

the routes cross each other so you can mix and match to suit your mood. The fact that my whole family, even the dog, can get out there and enjoy it; makes the drive up from Durban worth it. Q: Tell us more about Miles for a Million: how did it start and what is it about? Miles for a Million started three years ago, with a Parkrun. Sinakekele Children's home used the event to secure much needed nappy donations. My wife promised to double whatever had been donated if I could complete the run in under 30 minutes. This seemed unlikely but I thought I'd give it a crack and started doing short runs after work. I was surprised by how quickly my body responded and completed the race in 27 minutes, a time which I haven't been able to match since. By this time the bug had bitten and I continued to gradually increase the distance of my runs. In September last year, with an 18km run under my belt, I signed

up for the Karkloof 50-miler, the distance just shy of two back-toback marathons. In February this year I was retrenched, which afforded me the time to train seriously, and actively seek funding for Sinakekele. Since volunteering in 2003, Sinakekele Children has never been far from my heart. Ruth, Denise and their team of dedicated ladies do a fantastic job of looking after babies, some that have literally been thrown away. Many of these young children come to Sinakekele with health and developmental issues, and require a lot of love and attention. Sinakekele is not just part of ‘the system’; it's a refuge for those that are most vulnerable until a ‘forever home’ can be found. you can help, can be found on The aim of Miles for a Facebook @Sinakekele or @ Million is to relieve some of the StuartArmit financial burden so that Sinakekele can focus Call Holla Trails on 082 899 3114 or email on what they do best: hollatrails.co.za.
