UMHLANGA TO BALLITO

O holds dear to him.

N a visit to Cape Town recently to help our youngest son to settle in to his new lodgings, my attention was drawn to a little tin on a coffee table surrounded by other little things that my son, Daniel,

I was curious about this tin because I remember my late dad showing it to me when I was a boy. He had received it as a Christmas gift in 1941 from Ouma Smuts. Of course, she hadn’t presented it to him personally – he was one of the thousands of South African soldiers who had volunteered to fight oversees during the Second World War. As part of the morale boosting propaganda to keep those troops in the field in that bloody conflict that would drag on for another four years, this tin, originally full of cigarettes, was no doubt very welcome and the fact that my dad kept it through the war was significant. He used it afterwards to store mementos - the brass buttons and badge from his tunic and cap. These were precious to him as they became so to me. I was very proud that my dad had fought in the war – the big one, the one that the movies of my youth were made of. I knew that there had been one before that. My grandfather had fought in that one, but he never really talked about it and the film clips they showed us at school to teach us about the horror of it made it look more like a Charlie Chaplin cartoon – all that jerky footage inadvertently played at the wrong speed

was hilarious to an audience of ten year olds . But the real thing was anything but.

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle? — Only the monstrous anger of the guns. Only the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle Can patter out their hasty orisons. No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells; Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,— The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling for them from sad shires. What candles may be held to speed them all? Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes. The pallor of girls’ brows shall be their pall; Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds, And each slow dusk a drawingdown of blinds. Wilfred Owen

It was supposed to have been the war to end all wars but sadly it never was. I was moved to discover that one of my boys had added my ’76 issue brass collar dogs and beret badge to the collection - seeing them again brought back memories that I would rather forget – a sobering reminder of what can happen when political power and greed spin out of control. My sons will hopefully never understand the significance of the contents of that old cigarette tin and

for that I am thankful. Our country might be experiencing difficult times at present, but by comparison to the times of military conflict we have experienced in our relatively recent history, we have never had it so good. Watching the Armistice Parade live on BBC One on Sunday was a moving experience and a sobering reminder of how fragile we are and how quickly things can fall apart unless we remain vigilant. It is a sorry state of affairs that the education institution to which the child belongs, is thrust into the limelight. People tend to forget the core business of any school, is education, and yes, building strong characters that will have a positive influence in the future. Schools do not promote and encourage the use of narcotics or alcohol and as in most educational institutions there is a “Zero Tolerance”. The question on everyone’s lips, but are too frightened to answer is – Why are parents not taking responsibility? Is it not incumbent on parents to know what is happening in their child/ children’s daily routine? What is most surprising is that parents attempt to find excuses for their children’s actions. Of course there are mitigating circumstances, and in the majority of cases, this is considered as we have the best interests of children at heart.

We as a College have 1340 students being dropped off daily and we are here to serve and protect each and every single individual. Parents must have peace of mind when the child enters through the gates that they are in a happy, protected and safe environment – their home away from home. It is with this in mind that we will be relentless in our efforts to eradicate any form of illegal substances from the school property, but we appeal to parents to support us to form a synergy to enhance safety and security. I am sure that I speak on behalf of both public and independent schools. In our continued efforts to keep this Campus Drug Free, we have exciting news as we have a new staff member who will be joining us in 2019. Posh is a fully trained narcotics two-year old

came face to face with another of life’s obstacles. While out on my mountain bike doing my regular circular route out to the Tinley Manor Lagoon and back, I discovered that a fence had gone up on the property bordering the cane fields at Christmas Bay. That fence denies us access into those fields and to the lagoon beyond.

The entire section of land bordering up against those cane fields is now fenced off. Slowly but surely development is cutting off access to the beach which is a sad thing. As I sat on top of the hill looking out over this very scenic Christmas Bay / Tinley Manor stretch I was reminded of how much the area has changed over the years and how our interference has changed a simple thing like a surf break. With beach front flats having been built along the whole shoreline of Ballito, the wind patterns have changed and this has affected how sand moves into the coves and bays which used to create nice breaking waves that the surfers from the 70s often talk about. Winds swirl around these buildings today and a surfer that has been around a number of years will tell you that the waves are not the same. Then came the idea to blast rocks from Willard’s Beach to create a better swimming beach - a crazy idea that made bathing there more hazardous, and on top of that someone also tried to divert the natural flow of water from Boulder Bay into Bog Bay by dumping tons of rock into the gully. This now has stopped the natural flow of sand out of Granny’s Pool which used to create a perfect sand bar for the waves

In an attempt to create a safer bathing beach in the early 80s, a plan was forwarded to build two large circular piers, one from the rocks off the current lifeguard tower and another from the rocks of Boulders. Each one was to be built in a semicircle which would meet out to sea about 100 m behind the breaking waves. This, it was thought, would prevent further sand loss from Willard’s beach and the piers would calm the waves to create a gentle blue lagoon. What saved this disaster from happening was a survey by the then CSIR that concluded that if they were to build the piers, all the beaches up to Sheffield Beach would be destroyed because the piers would prevent the natural movement of sand onto those beaches . Lucky for us the plan was shelved due to costs, and we were left to live with the rock blasting and the destruction of the Boulder gully which became the famous Granny Pool where parents like to play with their little ones. Another prime example of our ability to ruin the coast is found at Cape St Francis. Here the world famous Bruce’s Beauties surf break had miles and miles of sand dunes which blew sand into the surf break and created a perfect running wave. Housing was developed on those dunes and today there is no sand is left to blow into the break, so it was changed for ever. There is not a lot we can do about change, but one day, years from now, we will lament how we could walk out our front door into wide open spaces and the freedom of the great outdoors. Who Knows?

NOOTROPICS: 9 NUTRIENTS TO OPTIMIZE YOUR BRAIN KIM WILSON - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

T do exactly that.

ODAY’S society is more competitive than ever, with everincreasing demands on our time. So, when we’re not able to work harder, we’ve got to find ways to work smarter to achieve our goals. Nootropics, “smart drugs” or “smart nutrients”, as a field has been developed to help us

The popularity of Nootropics has grown in the last couple of years, essentially because they’re touted as carrying amazing benefits. These natural or synthetic substances are often used to boost memory, focus, creativity, intelligence and motivation in healthy people. Sounds great, right? As mentioned above, there are both natural and pharmaceutical nootropics. The pharmaceutical options are often stimulants that you would need a prescription for. There may be some natural nootropics that you’re already using without realizing. Let’s take a look at a few of the best natural nootropics, as well as their effect on performance. 1.CAFFEINE Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed mind-altering substances in the world. It is naturally found in cocoa, coffee, tea, guarana and kola nuts, and is commonly added to energy drinks, fizzy drinks and medications. You can also get caffeine in supplement form. Essentially caffeine works by blocking a specific receptor in the brain, reducing your feelings of fatigue. Taken in moderate amounts, caffeine increases your attention and alertness, and speeds up your reaction time. If you’re feeling tired, 40 – 300mg of caffeine will give you a boost. 2.L-THEANINE L-theanine is an amino acid that also naturally occurs in tea, such as in green tea, but is more commonly taken in supplement form. There is a good body of evidence to demonstrate that taking 200mg of l-theanine calms your mind, without causing you to feel tired. Taking as little as 50mg of l-theanine leads to increased alpha-waves in the brain, which are associated with creativity and focus. For the most effective results, l-theanine is often paired with caffeine in performance enhancing combinations. 3.LION’S MANE MUSHROOM (Yamabushitake) Personally, I think the name of this mushroom is fantastic, and it has a rather impressive appearance. Lion’s Mane has been an important part of Chinese medicine for centuries in the treatment of various conditions. Recently, a number of clinical trials have suggested that Lion’s Mane is neuroprotective. It improves the survival and function of nerve cells, reduces inflammation, and encourages growth of new nerve cells. All of this leads to improved brain health, and Lions Mane is now being looked at as a potential option for the treatment of conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The doses of Lion’s Mane will vary depending on the strength of the extract, so check the label of the supplement you’re trying and start with the lowest dose first. 4.CREATINE It may have surprised you to see creatine on this list, but this amino acid does more than promote muscle growth in bodybuilders. Creatine is an amino acid that your body primarily uses to make and repair muscles in the body. However, ingested creatine also enters the brain and binds with phosphate to create a new molecule, which then serves as fuel for brain cells. This shortterm increase in fuel for brain cells has been linked to an improvement in short-term memory and reasoning skills. This is especially true for vegetarians or vegans, and for highly stressed individuals.

It’s safe to take 5g of creatine daily without side effects. There are higher doses available but the long-term safety of these is not yet confirmed. 5.BACOPA MONNIERI Bacopa Monnieri is a herb commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance brain functioning. It has been shown to speed up reaction times, improve memory and enhance information processing in the brain. Bacopa Monnieri also serves to protect your brain from oxidative stress. It takes a while to feel the effects of Bacopa Monnieri, so ideally a dose of 300 – 600mg should be taken for a few months to get the maximum benefit. 6.RHODIOLA ROSEA Rhodiola rosea is a nutrient we’ve spoken about plenty of times before. It serves as an adaptogenic herb that helps your body to cope with stress more effectively. Rhodiola has been shown to be effective at boosting mood, decreasing burnout, and reducing feelings of mental fatigue in stressed and anxious individuals. It is also neuroprotective. The ideal dose specifically for brain functioning has not been determined, but the recommended dose is 150 – 200mg daily.

arguably one of the most important nootropics available today. Phosphatidylserine has been known to improve memory and recall, mood and anxiety, alertness and attention, as well as cognition. The recommended dose of phosphatidylserine is 100mg, 3 times daily. FINAL THOUGHTS Nootropics as a field is developing rapidly, possibly in response to obsession with testing the capacity of our bodies. With all of us hustling, stressing, and pushing ourselves further and harder in our careers, it’s no wonder we’re left with foggy, ineffective brains. To give your mind some muchneeded support, consider the natural nutrients mentioned in this article.

7.PANAX GINSENG Panax Ginseng is an ancient medicinal root that has been shown to boost brain function. It’s unclear For more information on any of these products and expert advice, please visit exactly how it exerts it’s nootropic effect, but Panax Ginseng does have strong anti-inflammatory effect Lifestyle Health, on the brain. This may help protect the brain from Shop 24A, Lifestyle Shopping Centre, Ballito oxidative stress. 032 946 0441 Taken as a single dose, 200 – 400mg of Panax Ginseng reduces brain fatigue, and significantly NOW AVAILABLE AT LIFESTYLE HEALTH improves performance in tasks such as challenging math problems. Some studies have shown that over time our bodies may adapt to Ginseng, making it less effective with time. More research is needed on the long-term benefits to brain health. 8.GINKGO BILOBA Ginkgo Biloba serves to increase blood flow to the brain, which is hypothesized as the method behind its nootropic effect. Supplementing with Ginkgo Biloba has been shown to improve memory and mental processing, as well as decreasing stress-related blood pressure and cortisol levels. The recommended dose for Ginkgo Biloba is 40mg, 3 times daily. It has been suggested that a minimum of 4 weeks of supplementation is required before the maximum benefit can be felt. 9.PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE Phosphatidylserine is a naturallyoccurring phospholipid serving as a part of every single cell membrane in the body. It helps to maintain the fluidity of our cells, and controls the transport of important proteins, enzymes, nutrients, and oxygen into and out of the cell. In the brain specifically, phosphatidylserine is involved in the chemical signaling between nerve cells and supports their overall health, energy supply and growth. It is

HOLIDAY MEDICAL ADVICE DR ROSIE CAREY - THE WELLNESS FAMILY PRACICE

ESSE SKINCARE

LAUNCHES ITS FIRST CONCEPT STORE

R

ECENTLY opened in the Lifestyle Centre, the Esse concept store features a spacious retail area and 3 treatment rooms.

The vision was to curate a unique experience for customers with expert advice and crafted skincare procedures. The elegant treatment rooms are equipped to offer a complete range of facial and body care offerings. As a world first, staff are trained to take skin swabs for microbiome testing, giving clients the opportunity to find out which microbes are alive and well on their skin. This progressive approach to skincare is what makes Esse a world leader in the probiotic sector. Please stop in for a free consultation and an excellent, targeted recommendation should you require one.

YELLOW FEVER: Certain countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination prior to entry (for example, if you visit Zambia you need to have been vaccinated for Yellow Fever in order to return to South Africa). The caveat here is that it takes time for your body to develop antibodies in response to the vaccination, so this cannot be done last-minute!

LifeStyle Centre Ballito ballito@esseskincare.com 032 648 0040

TYPHOID: Vaccination against Typhoid Fever is usually only required for travel to South Asia. It’s not a bad idea to take a basic medical kit with you when you travel. I would suggest taking the following: •An antihistamine (for any stings/allergic reactions) •Symptomatic treatment for diarrhea such as Smecta, Travelan or Tasectan •Tablets or suppositories for nausea and vomiting •An antibiotic cream for infected cuts/bites etc •A broad spectrum antibiotic if you’re going to an isolated area.

MALARIA: Malaria is endemic to many areas worldwide and I would strongly recommend prophylaxis, especially in the wet summer season. Conservative measures that can be taken include the use of mosquito repellent like Peaceful Sleep as well as sensible dressing (long sleeves and full length trousers) around and after sunset. There are a few different medications that can be taken as prophylaxis. The one that I use most commonly is a combination of Atovaquone and Proguanil. I hardly ever see side-effects on this drug and it is generally well tolerated. It should be started 24-48 hours before arrival in the malaria area, continued for the duration of the visit, and then continued for a week after departing the malaria area. For information on which areas malaria is endemic to, and for information on resistance patterns and risk, you can contact 08600776643. If you develop flu-like symptoms or fever within 35 days after returning from a malaria area make sure you visit your doctor so that malaria can be excluded. DIARRHEA: ‘Travelers’ diarrhea” is common in people visiting India, Africa and the East. It is usually caused by contaminated water so common sense would suggest drinking bottled water or taking water-purifying tablets with you. Less obviously, lettuce/salad/fruit washed in contaminated water can transmit infection as can ice (sadly the alcohol in that cocktail won’t sterilize the ice!). I would recommend having a Hepatitis A vaccination prior to travel.

MOOIMAAK MAKEOVER

Bernice Du Plessis The transformation

FOR BERNICE DU PLESSIS

T

HANKS to a lifetime of smoking and having lost 20kg via a Banting diet, Bernice du Plessis, looked a lot older than a woman in her mid60s. Fortunately, kykNET’s Mooimaak team lead by Skin Renewal’s Dr. Dalize Willemse and therapist Johandi Koch, could work their magic to improve her deep-set wrinkles.

Not your average facial As Bernice’s skin was in dire need of more skin-plumping collagen she was given a series of CarboxyLaser facial treatments that include carboxytherapy, Laser Genesis and a glycolic peel. Each of the treatments simulated collagen while the peel revealed new, fresh skin; the laser accelerates healing and carboxytherapy improved circulation. The injection of youth Another way the Mooimaak team tackled Bernice’s wrinkles was via a 3D Liquid Facelift. It involves using

botulinum toxin injections to relax wrinkles in the upper half of the face while hyaluronic acid dermal fillers plump up those in the bottom half as well as areas that have lost volume. The result is a much smootherlooking complexion. A little lift Bernice was a great candidate for a non-surgical neck lift that involved using threads to lift up her sagging skin. Dr. Dalize used three different types of threads to create an immediate ‘lifted look’ that improves over time as they also encourage skin to produce more of its own collagen. Bernice was completely thrilled with her transformation and we think you’ll agree that her new, much smoother complexion is most definitely a look to love. Australian Celebrity Chef, Curtis Stone, Reveals The Secret To Making

The PERFECT French Toast

Once you’ve got that golden colour on both sides of your French toast, you’re ready to go.’ In a different bowl, Curtis mixes cinnamon and sugar together. ‘We’re actually going to take our French toast out of the pan, drop it into the cinnamon and sugar, toss it before we serve it,’ he said. ‘It’s a beautiful way to incorporate little spice and sweetness. And also give that extra texture on the outside of your French toast.’ Serve the French toast with ricotta and lightly poached in syrup strawberries. ‘Now that is French toast - so easy to make, but so delicious,’ Curtis said. Bon appetit!

O make the French toast, cut thick slices of brioche or raisin bread.

In a large rectangular dish, whisk the eggs and milk together. Then, soak the bread in the mixture for a couple of minutes - just let it absorb the beautiful mixture of the egg and milk. On warm heat, add the butter to the pan. ‘We’re cooking with butter because it’s got such a beautiful flavour, especially for French toast,’ he said. ‘Gently pick up your brioche, pop it into the pan. While that’s cooking, and all you’re looking for really is get some nice golden colour on both sides. ‘You want it to be nice and crisp on the outside, beautiful and sort of

We had our semi-final draws every Friday over the past 2 months whereby we drew 3 entries, the first would receive a “Golden Ticket” into the final competition as well as R5000.00 in cash, the 2nd and 3rd names drawn would receive R2000.00 in NRC (non-redeemable credits) on their Gold cards. On the 26th we drew our last 2 Finalists who received R2500.00 cash and entry into the final competition. Since it was our “last Fridays” event we had Karen Feeke “Ladysoul” assist us in this fantastic final round. We payed musical chairs with our 10 finalists whilst making moves to Karen’s magical voice, once knocked out they had to choose a balloon from our 10 Gold and Black Balloons and wait out until all were done. On paper, it delivers 77 kW and 136 Nm, and you have the option of either a 5-speed manual gearbox or 4-speed automatic transmission. The Rush comes with a 6-speaker, touchscreen audio system with USB and Bluetooth functionality, Android Auto Plus Show, Apple CarPlay and navigation. Dual-zone climate control and a 12V socket is also seen on the lower section of the dashboard. The 3-spoke leather steering wheel is only rake-adjustable and comes equipped with mounted controls. Apart from the features already mentioned, the Rush is also equipped with electric and retractable side mirrors, auto-off LED headlights, an integrated reverse camera with park distance control, keyless entry and a pushstart ignition. In terms of safety, a total of 6 airbags are fitted as well as ABS, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill Control Assist (HCA). WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DRIVE? What the Rush isn’t is a 4x4 vehicle but it has an excellent ground clearance of 220 mm along with 31-degree approach and 26.5-degree departure angle

and the Toyota Rush was more than adequate on rough country tracks. While some may scoff at the idea of a compact normally-aspirated 1.5-litre engine powering something as big as a Toyota Rush, but the reality is that a combination of short gear ratios and low mass means that performance is not sluggish. There’s plenty of go in the first 3 ratios and around town we were happy with the performance. Vehicles like this sometimes feel cheap but the Rush something which Toyota isn’t one of them, despite it being very reasonably priced. FINAL THOUGHTS Those looking for a well-priced family-oriented 5-seater with renowned reliability will love the Rush. The luggage bay of the Rush, for example, is by far one of the biggest we’ve seen on a vehicle of its type – it even surpasses that of its RAV4 family car sibling. Should you need even more space, fold the seats down, which converts the Rush into a makeshift panel van. R299 999 puts you behind the wheel of a well-specced, solid and capable family SUV. TOYOTA RUSH - PRICE IN SA The Rush is sold with a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and a 6-services/90 000 km service plan, with intervals every 15 000 km. ARLEY-DAVIDSON has confirmed its first electric motorcycle will go on sale next year.
