WHILE back I opted out of the social media circus because I found that I was becoming addicted to the distraction.

It’s easy to lose yourself like this – in fact there is a growing awareness worldwide of the problem and, more importantly, how to save yourself from it. Here are a few tips gleaned from the experts. Firstly, understand that you’re being played. An embarrassingly heavy socialmedia habit isn’t entirely your fault. “Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter have all

Editor Dave Charles 082 551 4768 editor@lifeandstyle.org.za

been designed to make you repeatedly use them and check back in. When you keep in mind that the technology is designed to hold you hostage, you might be motivated to set time limits. Implement rules. Make a conscious effort to stay off social media during meals, when commuting, and when you’re in the bathroom or in bed. Sign off for a weekend. A two-day respite isn’t enough to cure you of your habit. You’ll still be anxious when you return to the onslaught of electronic messages. But a little time away from the screen reminds you how nice life is without status updates. Taking a break unlocks creativity. Check with purpose. Most of us wander onto social media aimlessly— usually when we’re bored. To cut back, set a higher bar for logging on. Ask yourself, if there is a specific, positive reason for this? If you can’t come up with one like, wanting to see a relative’s wedding photos, resist the urge and do something that will boost your mood, like calling a friend or diving into an engaging book. Respond off-Line. Did Facebook just tell you it’s your friend’s birthday? Skip the “happy, happy” wall post and pick up the phone. If a friend just got engaged, resist the urge to send a tweet or a Facebook message and mail a card instead.

This will be much more meaningful. There is a huge amount of depressing information in general circulation at present. If you entertain it, you are allowing it to colour your world. After all, your perception is your reality. I choose to focus on happier things – and there is so much to be grateful for when you think about it. A good way to remember this is to find a gratitude stone to keep with you. I discovered this wisdom ages ago and it really works. Find a small, smooth pebble from somewhere significant and put it in your pocket. Then, whenever you take it out, think of something that you are grateful for. You will be amazed at how this changes your life. The Law of Attraction basically means that like attracts like. So if you are constantly thinking negative thoughts you will naturally attract more negative into your life. The gratitude stone is a physical action step that you can take to form more positive thought patterns that will attract positive results. Try it – you’ll thank me later! Thoughts on the VALUE CODE at ASHTON COLLEGE JOE ERASMUS - CEO ASHTON COLLEGE BALLITO

J

UST recently our students were tasked with drawing up an Honour Code for the College as part of their Life Orientation continuous assessment. To say the least, we were blown away with the level of work that was produced. One young lady Kaitlyn Damant, wrote way beyond her years and to paraphrase one sentence in her preamble that said “The Honour Code is not there to forcibly ensure that behaviour is regulated, but rather a set of moral guidelines that are adopted and understood by all at the College. To ensure that the culture and ethics of the College are enshrined in that code.”

Tasmika Nurbadh, Nathalie Franck and Alistair Wadsworth received Full Colours for Dramatic Arts

SAT 25 AUGUST

She looked at the three fundamental pillars of our College, that being excellence in Academics, Sport and Culture and in each of these pillars used Headings, Heart, Spirit, Character and Courage and in addition, incorporated Respect, Dignity, Integrity, Honesty and Kindness to further explain the Honour Code, and how an Ashton student should behave. Her description of each of these headings were extremely profund, and after reading the

whole script, I came away with a realisation that the issue of morals and values were still strong within our students. To them it is all about fairness and equal justice. The fact that if you have morals and values, rules become insignificant because they automatically fall into place. What brought great joy to me was that our Ashton philosophy of being a value-driven College as supposed to being rules driven, rang true. Having had the privilege to read a number of these scripts, it dawned on me that the vast majority of our students have embraced this philosophy, however, we are reminded occasionally about rules as and when they are transgressed. We are very excited with the progress and rate of construction of our second Hall which will complete the Intersen Phase. This Hall will be state-of -the art with a full size (international standard) indoor hockey facilities. At the same time provision has been made for a full sized stage with the latest LED, screen technology to host future productions and cultural events. This hall will have double the seating capacity of our Grace Hall, and will be able to seat the entire Junior College Phase which is currently on 900 students.

Joanie Cassidy, Noluthando Dlamini and Reeson Pillay were awarded Honours for Dramatic Arts

RAISING FEARLESS CONFIDENCE THABI HLALELE

I

N remembrance of 9th August 1956 when 20000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in defiance of the Pass Laws which restricted the freedom of movement of women, Dr Albertina Luthuli reflects on how women have through the years challenged society to recognise them as equal.

Born in to an era and time when opportunities were not readily available to people of colour, where young girls were not encouraged to pursue Mathematics and Science as academic disciplines, Dr Albertina Luthuli had a curiosity that defied the odds against her, and from an early age she knew that in order to rise above her circumstances, education would be pivotal to her success. Daughter of Chief Albert Luthuli, former member and president of the then banned African National Congress, and Nokukhanya Luthuli, her parents were both teachers and academics and both taught at Adams College, as such the motivation for education was present in her home from an early age. Culturally, girls were seen as a “commodity” in the

old days, married off at an early age, and seen as homemakers and were seldom encouraged to pursue their studies further. By her own admission she had the good fortune of growing up in a family that was not gender biased and she was encouraged to pursue her interests in medicine. Fear was a growing pain in her childhood, with continuous raids by the apartheid police, who tried to unsettle and harass her family. A different kind of fear reigns in South Africa today where women live in fear for their lives. They say that with freedom comes suffering, in post-apartheid South Africa the fight for women and their survival has become a point of contention and women are marching for a different cause. The rise of gender based violence has grown at an alarming rate. During apartheid black women were ranked at the very bottom of the social class, based on race and gender discrimination. Looking back at the progress that has been made over the years today’s women are at the same level of consciousness as women that lived and fought for their rights during apartheid. “They are just as resilient and militant about being equal to any situation as the women of 1956 and are refusing to being trodden on” she said. Albeit women still have to work harder than men, the progress women have made in recent years has shown progress. “Make decisions knowing that you are equal to the task, keep focused“ is her message to young girls. She encourages us to remember that our history is proof that our circumstances do not define our future, and if you work hard enough and remain focused in your vision then anything is possible. #RaisingFearlessConfidence

MANAGING

PAIN O

UR bodies were made to move. In fact, they thrive when we live an active lifestyle. Exercise should make us feel powerful and strong (even if we need to work through a few muscle aches in the beginning). If, on the other hand, being active leaves us with joint aches and pains, this is a sign to take drastic action.

KIM WILSON - LIFESTYLE HEALTH Whilst joint weakening is a natural sign of aging, there are many steps you can take to keep your joints as healthy as possible, for as long as possible. Osteoarthritis does not need to be the final destination. Aging isn’t the only factor to consider however. Genetics, diet, lifestyle, obesity, and even a sports injury can all play a role in the development of joint aches and pains. For the many causes of joint aches and pains, we have a number of solutions we recommend you consider, to get you moving freely and comfortably.

DIET

It would be impossible not to speak about diet when it comes to any healthrelated condition. Diet can play a pivotal role in just about any health condition. A balanced, nutrient-dense diet will provide the body with the tools it needs to prevent damage to the joints. • Refined carbohydrates and processed fats. We’ve heard it before, but these foods are inflammatory in the body. Inflammation leads to accelerated aging and degeneration of the joints. Limit these foods as much as possible. • Oily Fish. Oily fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which are anti-inflammatory. Aim to eat one serving of these foods per week. If you prefer not to eat fish, you can use a plant-based source such as chia seeds, flaxseed oil and walnuts. • Leafy Greens. Spinach, Kale, Chard and Collard Greens are rich in vitamin D, as well as phytochemicals and antioxidants. These are all powerful anti-inflammatories. Broccoli, as another green to include, is rich in vitamins K and C, Calcium and a compound called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is believed to slow the progression of osteoarthritis. • Nuts and Seeds. Nuts and seeds are great for the heart and are nutrientdense. They contain high levels of bonebuilding calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E and fiber. They also contain a potent immune supportive nutrient called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). • Bone Broth. Bone broth made from grass-fed beef or free-range nonGMO chicken bones is the ideal food for your joints. It is anti-inflammatory, rich in immune-boosting nutrients, and provides digestible collagen. Collagen provides the essential amino acids that your body needs to rebuild healthy joint tissue.

SUPPLEMENTS

There are a number of reasons why a healthy diet may not be enough to undo all of the damage done to joints over time. If a healthy diet rich in nutrition is not taking away your aches and pains, you may consider supplementing with the following: • Hydrolyzed Collagen. As mentioned above, collagen provides the baseline amino acids necessary to build healthy joint tissue. It is an important part of the treatment protocol. There are numerous benefits to supplementing with Collagen over and above joint health, so this is one supplement you may want to read more on! • Omega 3. Researchers have found that supplementing with as little as 1g of Omega 3 fatty acids daily can reduce the pain of osteoarthritis. Omega 3 fatty acids again carry many benefits beyond simply being anti-inflammatory. If you are unable to consume omega 3 rich sources daily, a supplement is highly recommended. • Vitamin D3. As another essential anti-inflammatory nutrient, vitamin D3 also plays an important role in bone health. You can get Vitamin D3 from our glorious sunshine. However, if you are not actively taking time to enjoy the sunshine, get your vitamin D3 level checked via blood test and consider supplementing appropriately. • Curcumin. Curcumin, as the active-component in Turmeric Root, is widely studied for its antiinflammatory benefits. Whilst it may not serve to regenerate the tissue, it will provide relief from pain and soothe the inflammation • Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM, a wonderful combination of nutrients that are very effective at reducing pain and inflammation and supporting hydration and repair of cartilage

FINAL THOUGHTS

When it comes to protecting our joints from early degeneration, prevention is best. Aim to live a healthy lifestyle incorporating a balanced diet and regular exercise. When prevention has, well, not happened, then all hope is not lost. Incorporate the diet and supplement recommendations above and build towards reclaiming pain-free motion in your joints.

A VOICE FOR THE

VOICELESS GLENDA THOMPSON Hi Everyone,

Imagine a world without wildlife. There are many areas on our planet that are totally devoid of all things wild, thanks to man’s intolerance or greed. The point is, man has simply bulldozed his way through the territory of indigenous wildlife without giving a thought to the wild creatures that live there - the only homes they have ever known. They don’t have a voice to raise concern over the way they are being treated. In this portion of the planet, it’s the little Vervet monkeys and the mongoose families that have been here forever but who are finding it extremely difficult to find new homes when we keep digging them up or tearing them down. Vervets in particular have been in the news a lot lately and we want to focus on how, instead of treating them like pariahs and harming them, we learn to co-exist with them and understand them. Fortunately for the Vervet families, there is an amazing group of people

fan and feel that you need to know more please get in touch:

who have got together to donate their time and energy to deal with monkeys that have been persecuted or harmed by people in KZN. They are the people from Monkey Helpline, a group of volunteers who got together over 20 years ago to help educate people about the reasons why monkeys behave the way they do, the things people should and should not do when monkeys are around and how to humanely coax them away from places where they are not welcome. Monkeys will not attack and bite people unless they have been threatened and they don’t carry rabies (absolutely no documented cases). Incidentally, a troop of monkeys is bonded to its territory through a matrilineal line that spans many generations. Female Vervets never leave their territory, so the monkeys that you see in your area descend from females who lived in the same area thousands of years ago. Even when we destroy their territory, they cannot leave. They simply have to learn to survive in a monkey unfriendly world. Let’s change that! They need and deserve our tolerance and understanding. If you are already a fan of the Vervet and would like to do something to help these amazing little creatures then please get involved. If you are not a

As mentioned, these people are all volunteers. Monkey Helpline needs financial assistance and they would also be grateful for donations of: blankets, towels, gum poles to maintain enclosures, old newspapers, cleaning products, fruit and veg, hand sanitizers, baby formula, cat boxes, flashlights and head torches, binoculars, raincoats, bush socks, hiking boots, sun glasses, water bottles, tools, nails and screws, vehicle spares, tyres, office equipment, building materials, spades, shovels, picks and axes. They also need help with: printing, hosting fundraisers, legal assistance, locating corporate sponsors, celebrity endorsements and vehicle maintenance and spares.

In 2012, a young Matthew Mole won the prestigious Converse “Get out Of the Garage” competition. And the rest, really is history. The accolade rapidly propelled Matthew’s career and led him to a signing with South Africa’s leading Independent label, Just Music. July 2016 saw Mole release his highly anticipated sophomore album “Run”, which reached the No. 1 position on iTunes South Africa and the album’s first single, “Run” achieved Gold Status within 3 months of release. From International stages, to headlining local festivals, and now… Ballito Beats… fans can get excited for a show of award winning calibre. Opening the stage for Matthew Mole will be local trio, Bradley Grey Band. With a debut album gaining swift momentum with fans new and old, the band is made up of songwriter, pianist and lead vocalist Bradley Grey, and brothers Ryan and Barry De Beer on bass and drums, respectively. A selection of selfpenned songs showcase the band’s musical and instrumental talents, tug on the emotions and leave you wanting more. The band take inspiration from the likes of The Fray, Coldplay and

One Republic and aim to reignite hope for the SA Rock scene with their on-stage passion for making music that people love.

The Sugar Rush Park gates will open at 16h30 on Friday the 24th of August with Bradley Grey Band taking to the stage from 18h30, followed by Matthew Mole. ANDRE DE VILLIERS COMING TO BALLITO IN SEPTEMBER

A

NDRE DE VILLIERS is a South African singer songwriter with an excellent ability to weave stories and songs together in a way that keeps his audiences spellbound.

His compositions have won awards in Paris, London and New York – many of them, commercials. You might remember the iconic ad for Volkswagen that used one of his wistful songs for the narrative. It’s the one with the Volksie Beetle and the young guy going from teenager to father and eventually handing the keys to his beloved bug to his 18 year old son Over the years Andre has collaborated with many musicians from iconic bands like Chicago,Stevie Ray Vaughan Double Trouble, Dolly Parton band, Joe Bonamassa band, Blood sweat and tears and the David Letterman band and he is a serious guitar player. Jim Olson handcrafts guitars for guys like James Taylor and David Crosby and he made one for Andre – he’s that good. And he’s coming to Ballito for a night of intimate music and stories – some of his hits, some James Taylor, Jackson Brown, Crosby Stills – if you enjoy the genre, you’ll love an evening with Andre De Villiers.

It’s happening at Mozambik Restaurant, Ballito on Thursday 6th September. Save the date and stay close to Life & Style for more details.

AVIS CAR SALES

BRINGS MOTORING PEACE OF MIND TO BALLITO

W

ITH Ballito emerging as one of the fastestgrowing urban hubs in South Africa, the Avis decision to expand its Avis Car Sales offering to the city over 3 years ago has been a success. City residents have embraced the peace of mind of Avis’ latest-model pre-owned vehicles have to offer.

“We are really excited about the Ballito branch,” said Akash Ramcharan (Regional Manager of Avis Car Sales Kwazulu Natal). “It widens our footprint and allows us to meet the growing demand for pre-owned vehicles in KwaZulu Natal. Through this branch we are continuously realising our commitment to providing our customers with quality service. We are giving our customers value for money and peace of mind whenever they buy a vehicle from us”. At Avis Car Sales we understand that finding a pre-owned vehicle in perfect condition, safe on the road with low mileage can be a daunting task for customers. If you are looking at buying a pre-owned vehicle, an ex Avis rental vehicle may be a great

option. Avis are meticulous about maintaining their vehicles which offer the ideal combination of useful features, new car appearance, and competitive pricing. The Avis Car Sales service includes tailored packages based on customer needs, from vehicle selection to the best finance and maximum warranties. With Avis Car Sales vehicles undergo quality checks and roadworthy tests before reaching the showroom floor which ensures that the vehicles receive the reliable, independent vehicle evaluations synonymous with Avis Car Sales. Residents in and around Ballito now have access to a wide range of one year old hatch back’s, sedan’s, SUV’s and luxury vehicles at the city’s Avis Car Sales branch. All vehicles are sold with the balance of the factory warranty, a full service and accident damage history, Datadot protection, low mileage, full roadworthy and easy finance and insurance options and trade ins are welcome. We have five branches in Kwazulu Natal namely, Umhlanga, Ballito, Pinetown, Durban Central and Pietermaritzburg. Visit one of our branches us today.
