A Message From President Angie Richey TRANSFORMING FUTURES:

Iam reminded of the foundational purpose that drives Life Pacific University (LPU) forward. The mission is clear: to provide Christ-centered, Spirit-filled education that transforms students into leaders and equips them to serve God faithfully in the church, the workplace, and the world.

The relevance of Scripture’s call for leadership remains as vital today as ever, especially amidst the backdrop of pressing contemporary challenges and an era marked by growing disillusionment with faith and the church, there’s an urgent need for leaders who can offer hope, healing, and meaningful solutions to pressing issues.

Jesus Himself said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few” (Matthew 9:37). He later commissions his loyal friends to go into all the world and make disciples (Matthew 28). This profound calling propels us, knowing that the world needs strong Christian leaders who will shine His light, teach His Word, and extend His love into every corner of society.

LPU, in partnership with the local church, has championed Christian education to prepare such leaders for over a century, sending over 27,000 graduates to 150 countries worldwide; we can’t stop now. Together, we stand on the shoulders of giants such as Aimee Semple McPherson, Dr. Jack Hayford, Dr. Jack Hamilton, Dr. Ron Mehl and Dr. Dick Scott, whose legacies continue to inspire us toward kingdom purpose.

Today, with an eye on the future church, leader health, and technology to further the gospel message, students are embracing spiritual formation while being equipped in the Word and in leadership skills. Offerings have expanded to better serve learners from anywhere in the world from certificates to online master’s degrees. I am also thrilled to announce the development of our upcoming Doctorate of Ministry program, a dream come true that will hold commitment

to excellence in pentecostal theological education.

LPU students and alumni span the globe, residing in the US and beyond in countries such as Spain, Russia, Panama, England, the Philippines, and Colombia. They are not only transformed learners but global leaders with far-reaching impact. Our Hispanic programs are expanding to serve even more leaders while grants strengthen efforts in developing skillful Hispanic leaders.

The recent launch of the Global Center for Pentecostal Studies and Practice is invigorating. It fosters collaboration among pastors, leaders, and scholars and provides a “hub” for respite, renewal, and study at our San Dimas campus. Additionally, through new initiatives such as the Compelling Preaching Grant and new McPherson Preaching Institute (MPI), leaders can hone their preaching skills, build collaborative connections, and deepen their love for God’s Word.

Indeed, it is an exciting time for LPU as we navigate the complexities of culture while remaining steadfast in our mission to support courageous, Christ-centered, Spirit-filled leaders. Enjoy the pages of this edition, and may you be inspired to continue your education at LPU or share the “good news” of transformation with others.

Let us press on together, knowing that God calls us to reach the harvest and make a lasting impact on His kingdom.

In partnership with you,

Angie

Life Pacific University proudly announces the establishment of the Center for Global Pentecostal Studies and Practice, a monumental initiative aimed at capturing the essence of Pentecostal history and theology while equipping believers for impactful ministry.

At the heart of this venture lies a commitment to bridge the gap between academia and the church, seamlessly connecting theological scholarship with practical application. The Center envisions itself as a beacon of Pentecostal knowledge, serving as a repository for diverse perspectives within the worldwide Pentecostal movement.

With a focus on global outreach, the Center seeks to encapsulate the rich tapestry of Pentecostal scholarship, acknowledging the varied manifestations of the Spirit’s empowerment across different cultures and contexts. By highlighting contemporary Pentecostal practices, the Center underscores the importance of living out Pentecostal theology in everyday life.

Practical resources such as seminars, podcasts, and publications will be developed to support local churches in nurturing believers within the Pentecostal tradition. Moreover, the Center will offer immersive

study retreats for pastors and extended academic opportunities for scholars seeking to deepen their understanding and practice of Pentecostalism.

Central to the Center’s mission is the belief in equipping, mentoring, and releasing individuals for effective ministry. By fostering interdenominational collaboration and serving as a bridge between the academy and the church, the Center aims to empower a new generation of Pentecostal leaders poised to impact their communities and the world.

As the Center for Global Pentecostal Studies and Practice takes shape, it heralds a new era for Life Pacific University, firmly positioning it as a hub for Pentecostal scholarship and theological reflection. Through this initiative, the university reaffirms its commitment to serving the church and advancing the kingdom of God.

In the words of John 16:13, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” May the establishment of this Center be a testament to the ongoing guidance of the Holy Spirit as we embark on this transformative journey together.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION WHY CHOOSE

In a world filled with many educational options, why should Christian education be your choice? Christian higher education isn’t just beneficial but essential for individuals, families, and society at large. Here are 10 Reasons to choose Christian Higher Education: Meagan Lord, MA and Sara Huson, MAED

Picture a future where our communities are led by individuals deeply rooted in Christian values, integrity, and compassion. Christian education serves as the incubator for such leaders, providing not only academic knowledge but also spiritual guidance and moral grounding.

Beyond academic excellence, Christian education prioritizes the holistic development of students— mind, body, and spirit. It offers not just knowledge but wisdom, not just skills but character, shaping individuals who are not only successful in their careers but also impactful in their communities.

In an age where secular ideologies often dominate educational discourse, Christian institutions offer a sanctuary where biblical truths are not just taught but embraced. They serve as bastions of light in a world increasingly veiled by moral ambiguity.

Ultimately, the value of Christian education transcends individual success; it is about shaping a future where faith, virtue, and love abound. It is about equipping a generation to be salt and light in a world hungering for truth and authenticity.

The mental health epidemic plaguing our society requires more than just clinical interventions; it demands a holistic approach that integrates faith and mental well-being. Christian education equips students with the tools to navigate life’s challenges through the lens of faith, offering hope and healing in times of despair.

Choosing Christian education creates an environment both inside and outside the classroom that is Christcentered. Engaging in your educational journey with likeminded believers pushes you toward academic excellence and spiritual growth.

With the shortage of young pastors and ministers, the need for institutions that train and empower the next generation of church leaders has never been more pressing. Christian education ensures that the mantle of ministry is passed on to capable hands, ready to shepherd God’s flock with wisdom and grace.

The spiritual life of students in Christian education is just as important as academic performance. Choosing an institution for Christian education provides additional opportunities such as chapels, bible studies, and more where your spiritual development is cultivated the same way your mind is.

As society drifts further from its moral anchors, Christian education stands as a beacon of truth, preserving and promoting a biblical worldview. It instills in students a firm foundation built on the unchanging principles of Scripture, empowering them to engage with culture from a position of unwavering faith.

Professors, staff, and more are not just there to facilitate your academic experience, but are willing to engage in discipleship for the better of your Christian faith journey. Mentorship and discipleship is readily available and encouraged when you choose Christian education.

In conclusion, Christian education is not just a choice; it is a calling—a calling to invest in something greater than ourselves, to sow seeds of faith and knowledge that will bear fruit for generations to come. So, as you ponder your educational journey, consider not just what you will gain but what you will contribute to a world in desperate need of hope and redemption. Choose Christian education, and together, let us embark on a journey of transformation and impact.

LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY’S DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY AND COUNSELING

PAVES THE WAY IN

MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION

Meagan Lord, MA

Life Pacific University, a beacon of Christian higher education, recently took a significant stride forward in addressing the pressing issue of mental health within the Church and beyond. In their inaugural Mental Health and the Church Webinar, LPU brought together nearly 150 leaders from around the globe, marking a pivotal moment in bridging the gap between mental health awareness and the Church’s response.

The webinar, held to equip pastors, leaders, parents, and more with a biblical understanding of mental health, garnered widespread attention and participation. Attendees from as far as Australia and the Philippines joined in, demonstrating a global hunger for resources and support in navigating this crucial conversation.

Dr. Angie Richey, President of LPU and a licensed marriage and family therapist, expressed her delight at the overwhelming response to the webinar, emphasizing LPU’s commitment to preparing future pastors and mental health professionals. “It’s inspiring to see churches and leaders rallying together, determined to find meaningful ways to support their communities,” she remarked.

Led by esteemed panelists including Dr. Dan Mundt, Foursquare Director of Leader Health, and Professor Dawn Houk, LPU Chair of Psychology and Counseling, the webinar delved into critical topics such as combating mental health stigmas and promoting

environments of wellness and acceptance within congregations.

The diverse panelists, representing both LPU and the Foursquare Church, brought a wealth of expertise and passion to the discussion. From Dr. Ken Bringas, Director of the Life Seminary and Pastor, to Chandler Rodriguez, an LPU Master’s in Counseling Student and Ministry Leader, each speaker reinforced the message that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

As a university dedicated to preparing leaders for service in the Church and beyond, LPU is committed to continuing the momentum generated by the webinar. With programs like the Bachelor’s in Human Development and Psychology and the Master’s in Counseling, LPU seeks to equip individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to address mental health challenges from a Christian worldview. To coincide with this effort, the recording of the webinar and the resource PDF created by Dr. Angie Richey will be available to the public at the QR code below.

HERITAGE AND HEART

Imagine stepping foot onto a campus where everybody knows your family’s name – and because they know your family, they assume they know you. As a freshman moving into the dorms at the LPU campus in San Dimas, Calif., Shealyn would much rather have been unknown. “I grew up as a pastor’s kid, niece, and grandkid; [so many family members] attended LPU whether in California or Virginia - my grandfather, Jack Hamilton, was even the President of the school.” On move-in day at LPU, Shea again was met face to face with the intimidating magnitude of her family connections. “I wanted to go somewhere where I wasn’t known as the child or grandchild of someone.” The heritage she describes is the lineage of LPU and Foursquare ‘greats’ she is a part of. Shea’s

grandfather, Dr. Jack Hamilton ’65, was the 5th president of LPU (at the time called LIFE Bible College). Her mother and father, Revs. Tim and JJ Vercellono, are Foursquare pastors in Laconia, New Hamp., and JJ is an LPU alumna from the MASL program, Class of 2022 (JJ now serves on the LPU Board of Trustees). Even Shea’s uncle, Rev. Jeff Hamilton ’90 (a Foursquare pastor at Hills Church in Laguna Niguel, Calif.), has a claim to fame as one of the inductees in the LPU Athletics Hall of Fame – having been a part of the 1988 Championship Men’s Basketball team. The number of pastors, leaders, and LPU alumni in her family are many. But despite all these family connections, the thing most special about Shea is that she has come to cherish her heritage while trusting in God and

I thought I wanted to go somewhere where I wasn’t known as the child or grandchild of someone, until the Lord led me on the most beautiful journey in understanding the honor it is to have the heritage I do.

not family to promote and bring her favor. “The Lord led me on the most beautiful journey in understanding the honor it is to have the heritage I do.”

Despite the gift of that heritage making her studies so meaningful, Shea remained an eager student of Scripture during her time at LPU. “There was a time my junior year when I was struggling to grasp some of the theology behind something I was learning in Romans, and needed some ‘uninterrupted’ time to focus on it. My professor, Mark Duzik, was headed to chapel, noticed me, and walked right over. He asked what I was doing, and when I told him, he sat down across from me, walked me through it until I understood – and encouraged me. That’s something I’ve never forgotten, and [something] that the Lord has time and time again used to minister to me in a wonderfully transformative way.”

The transformation Shea experienced during her season as an LPU student taught her also to continue as a student – a student of life, and a student of the things of the Lord. “During my time there, I got to work for President Angie Richey in Admissions and George Bostanic in Student Life, and they both taught me more than I can say about what it looks like to not only be a leader, but to be a leader who is healthy and constantly pursuing growth.” Shea’s takeaway from that formative time is a lesson for every leader: “Remaining teachable no matter how experienced I may be, how old I get, or who I’m surrounded by is something that I learned during my time at LPU, and honestly is one of the greatest things I could have ever learned to prepare me for my future.”

The future she was preparing for was even more lovely than she imagined. “[My husband and I] met in the Summer of 2020, and it was so

beautiful how the Lord brought us together and intertwined our lives! Jesus had taken me on a journey that led me into full dependency on and trust in Him, and suddenly there was Sean... Life has been so much more abundant and full of color since then.” Shea and Sean recently welcomed a daughter into their world, and raising her has given Shea a newly vivid picture of God’s love: “The fraction of understanding that I’ve gotten [of] how deeply the Father loves us is incredible. So selflessly, patiently, kindly, unconditionally. It’s truly amazing and gives me such a fresh perspective!”

Shea’s current ministry role is as meaningful as her young family is sweet. “There’s a saying that if you love your job, you never work a day in your life, and that’s truly how I feel about what I get to do!” Shea’s role as the NextGen pastor at Thrive Worship Center in Concord, NC keeps her youthful excitement for Jesus alive: “There is nothing like being surrounded by the wonder, trust, and joy that kids bring when it comes to the things of God. I so love the hunger and passion that teenagers have, to know more about who the Lord is to them, the hope He brings, and all He has for their lives.” Her passion is palpable. “This generation is not next, they are right now, and they are ready for more of Jesus!”

Of her own walk with Jesus, Shea holds a perspective that is grateful, joyful, humble, and sweet. “The Lord did incredible things that started two generations before me and continued in my life; I truly could never have anticipated all He would do in and through me. One of the greatest decisions of my life was choosing to go to LPU!” Shea’s story illustrates what beautiful things result of a life given over to the Lord – she chose to let go of her own way of doing things and let God shape in her a character that is humble, teachable, and trusting in the goodness and faithfulness of God.

CERTIFICATE IN CHAPLAINCY CHURCH WITHOUT WALLS

Are you hungry to take the next step to serve where God has called you? Are you ready to explore new methods and ministry settings? Then this certificate in chaplaincy is for you.

This certificate is a collaboration between Foursquare Chaplains’ International (FCI) and Life Pacific University (LPU) and offers practical, interactive material to Pastors and ministry leaders. This certificate is built for all who “seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” (Jer 27:7). Chaplaincy moves beyond the “attraction” model of growing a church to a model of measurable community impact outside the church doors, often among unreached and unchurched people. Chaplaincy is also a beautiful way for “second career” ministers in transition to walk out their calling in the next phase of life.

Instructors include Pastor Chanda Crutcher, Chaplains Obed Almeyda, Steve Sewell, Fran Graham, John Peterson, Ray Houk, Sharon Perkins-Pyant, Josh Best, Sylvia Peterson, Dawn Houk, and Leslie Forbes-Mariani. Together your instructors bring decades of professional ministry experience working with police, fire, hospice, prisons, military, churches, industrial/institutional (did you know Tysons foods and Chic-fil-A are among many businesses who hire Chaplains?), and we even have a chaplain who works at the horse racing track with trainers and jockeys!

Speaking personally, I have been a pastor, leader, chaplain, and educator for over 30 years. I wish this course were available to me

30 years ago! I am not the only one – in the first month of release 62 students enrolled, and the Spanish language version is also available. This course discusses everything from how to positively impact city services, crisis intervention, care to your community in crisis, emotional regulation (yours and theirs!), support freedom of religion, death notifications, supporting first responders (more than doughnuts at the fire station!), and loving the “city.” The “city” is the community you are called to serve – and the “city” is everywhere! For a very reasonable cost, students work through about 25 hours of videos, reading, self-paced quizzes and assignments, and can even apply for college credit at LPU. Courses which make up this certificate are: Introduction to Chaplaincy, Ethics and Legal Matters, Crisis Intervention Skills, and Spiritual and Mental Health to equip students to be effective in an increasingly secular culture.

Doors in our communities and schools are open to Chaplains as never before! Foursquare Chaplains are among the most respected, besttrained, and effective chaplains there are. This certificate is required to be endorsed as a Chaplain by Foursquare Chaplains International (FCI). Whether you feel called to pursue formal chaplaincy or continue to serve where you are, the training offered through this certificate program will help your ministry be more effective and rewarding to care for your community – Christ-centered and Spiritfilled.

This certificate is available in English and Spanish. To learn more or enroll in this exciting course go to: Certificate in Chaplaincy | Life Pacific University

THE COMPELLING PREACHING INITIATIVE

This past year, Life Pacific University received a significant grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. as part of their Compelling Preaching Initiative. The Compelling Preaching Grant funds have empowered LPU to continue in its mission to cultivate compelling Pentecostal preachers in the modern world. The grant is earmarked for the creation and development of the McPherson Preaching Institute (MPI) and the MPI Preaching Conference, paying homage to the esteemed legacy of Sister Aimee Semple McPherson, the university’s founder, and a trailblazer in Pentecostal preaching, which will train a comprehensive community of male and female preachers that are intercultural, intergenerational, and interdenominational.

The initiative’s multifaceted approach includes fostering a mentoring community between seasoned pastors and emerging preachers, delivering rich yet easily accessible digital content, and hosting an annual conference dedicated to Spirit-filled, culturally relevant preaching. By investing in these avenues, LPU aims to achieve a range of impactful outcomes, from cultivating a community of effective preachers adept at contextualizing the gospel to inspiring and informing congregations and diverse audiences.

At the heart of LPU’s endeavor lies a commitment to empowering preachers with both spiritual depth and effective communication skills. Drawing upon its rich heritage and deep-rooted values, LPU seeks to uphold the tradition of Pentecostal preaching while embracing innovative methods and platforms for reaching contemporary audiences. From traditional pulpit sermons to dynamic digital mediums, LPU endeavors to equip preachers to engage with believers and unbelievers alike in culturally resonant ways.

Recognizing the diverse tapestry of contemporary society, LPU

is keenly attuned to the need for preachers to navigate complex cultural landscapes with grace and truth. By providing training in Scriptural exegesis and nurturing a prophetic voice grounded in Scripture, LPU seeks to equip preachers to address pressing issues with wisdom and compassion, fostering dialogue and understanding in a polarized world.

The Compelling Preaching Initiative at LPU is structured around three core activities: Community, Content, and Conferences. Through the establishment of the McPherson Preaching Institute, LPU aims to cultivate a vibrant community of mentors and mentees, fostering collaboration and growth among preachers. Simultaneously, the creation of a digital content hub, the Ministry Toolkit, will provide preachers with a wealth of resources ranging from articles and podcasts to instructional videos, empowering them to enhance their preaching skills.

Furthermore, the annual MPI Preaching Conference will serve as a focal point for training and inspiration, bringing together preachers from diverse backgrounds to sharpen their skills and deepen their understanding of Scripture-centered, culturally engaging preaching. By integrating these activities, LPU endeavors to create a robust ecosystem that supports the development of compelling preachers both within its own community and beyond.

As LPU embarks on this transformative journey, it remains steadfast in its commitment to preparing leaders who are not only skilled communicators but also faithful stewards of the theological truths of the gospel. With the support of the Lilly Endowment grant, LPU is poised to make a lasting impact, equipping preachers to proclaim the timeless truths of the gospel in ways that are relevant, compelling, and transformative for generations to come.

REV. MARIO BARAHONA

SENIOR PASTOR OF ANGELUS TEMPLE HISPANIC FOURSQUARE CHURCH, TRUSTEE, LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

When I think about LPU’s history I think about a school that was birthed in the middle of a revival of the Holy Spirit as an answer to: “What do you do when you have thousands and thousands of young people wanting to serve God?” Well, you prepare them for ministry. Today we are still here. I see the miracles, and I see the crowds, and I see what God has done in more than 150 different countries, where a lot of the students went. To think, that it was birthed in the history of revival, and it continues in the history of the Holy Spirit. That’s what LPU is all about.

DR. KNEELAND BROWN

TRUSTEE, LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

I see an institution that’s looking at the struggles in the world, the hurt in the world, and the pain in the world, and responding with a Spirit-filled, gospel-centered response. I’m excited about what I see Life Pacific University doing today!

AND ENDORSEMENTS

DR. GLENN BURRIS, JR.

FORMER PRESIDENT, THE FOURSQUARE CHURCH, ALUM, LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

I don’t think there’d be a Foursquare Church without LPU, and the mission God gave them to help us rediscover discipleship. LPU helps the Church rethink vocational ministry; they’re training students with new skillsets to be able to meet the needs that are out there. I couldn’t be more excited about how LPU is engaging a rapidly changing culture, and finding a way to equip young people and emerging leaders.

REV. JEFF VINES

SENIOR PASTOR OF ONE&ALL CHURCH

We are a church that is nondenominational and we believe that LPU is on a mission to train pastors, leaders, missionaries, and we’re all about that, so we want to partner together with them.

“ “ “ “ “ “

HEIDI CHAMBERS

BOARD DIRECTOR, THE FOURSQUARE CHURCH

I see God’s faithfulness in people being sent out and preaching Jesus the Savior, Healer, Baptizer, and Soon Coming King. When I think of LPU today, I can only think of influencers, Spirit-filled believers who are going and influencing the world in all different areas.

REV. FARRELL LEMINGS

ALUM, LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

If we’re going to reach our world for Christ, we need future leaders and it’s what LPU is doing presently – equipping leaders. I’ve never been more excited about the raising up of leaders and the potential of the harvest.

DR. STERLING BRACKETT

ALUM AND FORMER PRESIDENT OF EAST CAMPUS, LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

I see a training institution that Aimee Semple McPherson envisioned over 100 years ago...The future has no limit for Life Pacific as we train men and women to be people of God, and I’m so grateful that they’re training students how to be a spiritual force to be reckoned with.

PASTOR RANDY REMINGTON

PRESIDENT, THE FOURSQUARE CHURCH, ALUM, LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

I’m really thankful for the ministry of Life Pacific University personally, but now as the president of the Foursquare Church, I really have a deep gratitude for this institution, that has an anchor to our very beginnings. Our origin story as a movement is tethered to a launching... we didn’t want to just send people who were saved and Spirit-filled, but we wanted to send saved and Spirit-filled people who were trained and sent with intention into the harvest field. The mission still remains the same.

Igniting Transformative Power Theather THE OF

Prof. Carissa Hawksworth’s Impact on Life Pacific University

Mayaah Szabo, current Media & Communications Student
“Theater has always been my sanctuary, my sacred space where stories come alive and souls are touched. It all began when I played the woman in the Bible who was touched and healed by Jesus. This moment ignited a fire within me. From then on, I knew my purpose was to bring the transformative power of Jesus to life on stage, to touch hearts, and to inspire others to experience His love through the magic of theater.” - Carissa Hawksworth

At Life Pacific University, Prof. Carissa Hawksworth (’07Dean – School of Arts & Sciences) stands as a beacon of passion and dedication, illuminating the transformative power of the arts to a new generation of creatives and leaders. As the director of the Spring 2024 production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” (April 18 – 20) her commitment to her craft and to her students radiates, igniting flames of creativity and community that transcend the stage.

In “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” a recurring motif is the dichotomy between appearance and reality, particularly exemplified in Quasimodo’s disfigurement juxtaposed with his inner beauty and kindness. Likewise, Carissa’s portrayal of a woman touched and healed by Jesus serves as a powerful metaphor for the transformative power of faith, challenging superficial judgments and revealing deeper truths about human nature and its capacity for redemption and healing. Both narratives invite audiences to look beyond surfacelevel appearances and embrace the deeper truths that lie within.

With each production, Professor Hawksworth seeks to instill in her students not only the skills and techniques of performance but also empathy, self-discovery, and a reliance on the Holy Spirit to elevate each moment on stage.

The theme of mentorship in “Notre Dame” is evident in the dynamic between Quasimodo and Claude Frollo, where Frollo is both a

mentor but also a manipulator. Conversely, Carissa is an example of a Christ-like mentor.

This cautionary tale is about who we allow as leadership in our lives, and Carissa embodies the type of mentor beneficial to all.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame resonates deeply with Christian themes. It is a story of redemption, forgiveness, social justice, faith, sacrificial love, and the tension between judgment and mercy. Recognizing this, the LPU Arts Faculty saw it as an opportunity to engage students in meaningful dialogue about faith, compassion, and social justice.

In “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” the transformative power of theater is evident in the ways it influences both the characters within the narrative and the audience experiencing the story. Similarly, Dr. Angie Richey’s reflection on Carissa Hawksworth highlights a parallel theme of the power of theater to inspire and transform. Carissa’s dedication to her students and craft mirrors the commitment of the characters in the play to their art. Through her leadership, Carissa demonstrates how theater can have a profound impact on individuals and communities, inspiring them to strive for excellence and embrace the power of creativity. Both narratives underscore the transformative potential of theater as a medium for personal and communal growth, emphasizing its ability to inspire, uplift, and bring about positive change.

JOURNEY OF IMPACT: STABILITY AMID CHAOS AND THE PATH TO DOCTORAL ACHIEVEMENT

Upheaval in life and ministry isn’t typically a time someone would take on the financial and scholastic responsibility of a master’s program. Christopher Whyte, MA ’20, is an exception to that rule. But the beauty of his story lies not only in obstacles overcome, but the journey through his LPU master’s program which eventually led him to his current season of life – the simultaneous undertaking of a Master’s Degree in Theology and a Ph.D. in Divinity at the University of St. Andrews in one of the most beautiful countries in the world – Scotland.

Christopher credits his current success in his doctoral program to the rigorous and thorough MA in Strategic Leadership program at Life Pacific University. “The MASL was so incredibly helpful for doctoral research,” he explains. “It set a standard of top-level research and excellence in my writing, while encouraging a holistic view of learning that didn’t abandon family or health, and in all this kept Jesus at the center. That posture helped me to navigate a very challenging doctoral experience while making sure that my family and my faith were still priorities.”

Christopher’s academic undertaking at LPU during the global pandemic, a time in world history both tumultuous and uncertain, was both strategic and purposeful. “I chose LPU MASL because, at the time, I was in a moment of upheaval in life and ministry.” Christopher reminisces, “We were facing some real challenges economically, and at the same time I was asking some big questions spiritually.” His dilemma, one experienced by so many across the world, was met with an opportunity. “The MASL offered help with both professional development that could open doors to additional professional opportunities, and

a world class faculty that could help me find answers to the big questions I was asking.”

Since 2012, the university has offered this high-quality graduate degree option to adult learners like Christopher who seek to pursue more for themselves academically, spiritually, and professionally, while maintaining ministry, professional, or familial responsibilities. Christopher’s own beautiful family (pictured) is still young, and currently experiencing life a world apart from LPU’s primary campus in San Dimas, CA. “I’m married to Allene and have two kids— Ruthie (4) and Jordy (7)—we live in St. Andrews, Scotland at the moment.”

As he concludes his doctoral work, Christopher reflects, “I can’t thank LPU enough. All of my faculty, my amazing cohort, and specifically Dr. Angie Richey, Dr. Remi Lawanson, Kristina Ingles, and Paul Kuzma, for the life-changing impact they made.” His thankfulness runs deep and isn’t merely on his own behalf. “You’ve all helped me and my family so much, and we’re so grateful for the experience.

For those considering entering this program, Christopher’s summation of the impact to his life and goals is clear: “The words I always think of when I think of the MASL are ‘formation’ and ‘challenge.’ From the very first day of the first residency, it was obvious that the faculty and staff wanted the best for me and were willing to challenge me to help me get there.” How meaningful that an academic journey which commenced amidst world chaos could seek to help bring order.

Whyte’s capstone project to culminate his Master of Arts in Strategic of Leadership at LPU was entitled, “Exploring the Strength of Implicit Attitudes in Leaders who Mentor Underrepresented Groups.”

“BUT SEEK FIRST HIS KINGDOM AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS”

What does the titular statement mean? Jesus starts his ministry by announcing the coming of God’s kingdom, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). On his famous Sermon on the Mount, he calls his listeners to not worry about food, drink or clothing, but to “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.” The kingdom was central to Jesus’ preaching. What is this Kingdom, and how does it relate to us? The Kingdom of God is his kingly rule and his government, which is established in the hearts of all those who have received Him as a sufficient Lord and Savior. It is where his will is done. Believers become citizens of that kingdom.

This Great King has given the citizens of his kingdom a Great Commission: To go into all the world, to every tribe and nation, and preach a clear message of repentance and conversion. Those who receive the King’s invitation, and his righteous government will become citizens of his kingdom. These new citizens will have to be instructed and spiritually formed through discipleship so that they, in turn, bring others to God’s kingdom of salvation. The task of the church is to teach those who enter the kingdom to obey what Jesus has commanded. This is a monumental enterprise that requires welltrained, well-prepared citizen-leaders to explain the demands of the Kingdom of God adequately.

Discipleship consists of training people; it is necessary to invest time and resources in the lives of those who enter the Kingdom so that they learn the values of the Kingdom. Such training begins at the local church. Each pastor must help people in their congregation discover their ministerial (Apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher) and spiritual gifts. At the same time, church leaders must mentor and promote formal and higher education among their

congregants so that the church obtains well-prepared teachers, preachers, and ministers who accurately handle the word of truth. But beyond the local church, where can one start such a journey?

This is where Life Pacific University’s academic offerings come into place, including Life Pacific’s Hispanic Programs and Initiatives. We are making history because, for the first time in our short history, we will be able to have a higher education path that takes students from a certificate to a doctorate.

Within our Foursquare National Hispanic District, we have various schools of ministry, ministerial diploma programs, associates in theology, and bachelor’s programs certified as pathways that lead to Life Pacific’s graduate programs, such as our Master of Arts in Leadership in Spanish, as well as our coming out soon Doctorate in Ministry. This is a great opportunity for the Hispanic community to make history!

Of course, some might say that education is costly, and may not be willing to pay the price (financially or otherwise). But it is worth noting that ignorance and incompetence also have a cost we should not be willing to pay. If education is perceived as expensive, not fulfilling the Kingdom’s mission is even more so.

We must embrace the formal educational process to be relevant ambassadors in this world and serve effectively in the Kingdom of God. Start your journey today at Life Pacific University.

SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

In an era characterized by the rapid evolution of occupational landscapes, the School of Arts and Sciences at Life Pacific University is proactively broadening its collaborative initiatives, fostering opportunities for students to engage with a diverse array of industry experts and acquire tangible proficiencies poised to enhance their marketability upon graduation.

Throughout the present academic year, our Media and Communication Program welcomed a compelling collaboration by hosting a distinguished videographer, recipient of the esteemed “Best of California Weddings” accolade, to conduct a comprehensive workshop on event filming methodologies and applied techniques. This immersive session welcomed students from various academic concentrations within the program, affording them the invaluable opportunity for firsthand experiential learning within a simulated event environment, under the direction of a seasoned professional. Reflecting on her participation, Junior Alyssa Jimenez-Gonzalez articulated, “I was able to experience hands-on interaction with the camera and to see how a business is run while shadowing a professional and learning from his process”.

In addition to such impactful initiatives, the Chair of Media and Communication, Andy Hawksworth, M.F.A., has diligently fostered robust connections for students with prominent figures in the field, including leaders such as Rick Reckedell, renowned for his contributions as a lighting designer at Disney, and Jeffrey Prosser, a distinguished music video producer. Professor Hawksworth’s endeavors have further empowered students through active involvement in diverse projects, ranging from the production of LPU’s student life news show to the pioneering establishment of the inaugural student film festival, called “Transitions.” Moreover, he has fostered an empowering community through the promotion of exemplary student endeavors, exemplified by the recent recognition garnered by Media and Communications junior Jasmine Mclemore for her award-winning film, “Still Love.”

The Department of Counseling and Psychology, in tandem with the School of Arts and Sciences, is orchestrating a seminal discourse centered on the theme of healthy church leadership, synergistically

paralleled with LPU Arts’s spring musical, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” By leveraging the artistic narrative of the production as a metaphorical lens through which to demonstrate principles of effective leadership, the production and chapel will partner to educate budding leaders on the steps for healthy leadership patterns. Each playbill will contain a devotional intended to help viewers learn how to set up healthy patterns for leadership in the church, the workplace, and the world.

Meanwhile, the Department of Business and Management continues to serve as a lighthouse of entrepreneurial engagement, spearheading the semi-annual “Business as Mission” symposium. This on-campus event allows students across all majors to discuss innovative ideas with current entrepreneurs and visionaries. At a similar business event last fall, a student was able to connect with a current business owner and was invited to join their team in a paid position for onthe-job training. Student Mayaah Szabo remarked “LPU’s dynamic opportunities opened doors to a thrilling journey! At a prestigious Christian business conference, my pitch clinched a job offering an exhilarating array of responsibilities: from radio show production to social media content creation, real estate management, travel arrangement assistance, and diving into HR challenges. The journey ahead promises excitement, growth, and endless possibilities!”.

Eminent business leader and friend of LPU, Mike Rovner, has exhibited a commitment to nurturing the professional development of LPU students, graciously sponsoring their attendance at the prestigious Increase Business Conference. At this conference, Business Administration students were able to immerse themselves in conversations surrounding the evolving landscape of business with like-minded leaders. These immersive experiences serve as pathways for empowering students to forge invaluable networks within the business sphere while allowing the lessons taught within the classroom to be carried into real-world applications.

Through these transformative partnerships, our institution not only allows students to cultivate expansive professional networks but also equips them with the valuable experience that will set them apart in the future job market.

EMPOWERING TRANSFORMATION: A PORTFOLIO-BASED APPROACH TO MEDIA EDUCATION

The core mission of Life Pacific University’s Media & Communications degree: to empower our students to give Voice to the Voiceless, to Amplify Excellence, to Speak Truth with Authority, and to bring Clarity to Chaos. We aim to embrace these new technologies and infuse our messaging with hope founded on a rich legacy of Biblical tradition. In this way, our Media & Communications degree is not just a curriculum but a transformative journey.

Students embarking on their Media & Communications (MComm) careers find themselves immersed in a holistic educational experience that goes beyond textbooks and lectures and focuses on practical skills and network development. As the program is portfolio-based, students begin building their Media Portfolio their very first semester at LPU, with new content being added in every MComm class they take. This not only provides them with practical employment tools but also

encourages them to adopt the persona of a professional from day one. To become leaders not just prepared for the workforce but equipped with the tools to thrive in it.

Another cornerstone of the program is its emphasis on student network development. From day one, students are encouraged to build relationships not only with their peers but also with industry professionals. Guest lectures, course field trips (like the annual visit to Fuse Technical Group, which provides LED technology and Virtual Production resources for some of the biggest movies and concerts in the world), as well as our bi-weekly MComm Forums (in which MComm students get one-on-one training and feedback from industry leaders and innovators) all serve to expand our students reach and impact long before they graduate.

But what truly sets the Media & Communications program apart is its unwavering commitment to integrating biblical principles into every aspect of

education. As communicators, we represent people and organizations in their missions to connect and grow, and we want to do so in a way that reflects the Kingdom in every interaction, post and video we produce. This is why practical theology and ethical methodology are integrated into every course outline and assignment. MComm graduates will enter the marketplace equipped with technical expertise and driven by genuine understanding of their calling and purpose.

The Media & Communications program at LPU is not just an academic pursuit; it’s a transformative journey! Through a portfoliobased curriculum, emphasis on student network development, and unwavering commitment to biblical principles, the program is preparing graduates to make a Kingdom impact through media and communications. And as the industry continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: the MComm students of LPU will be forging new paths to bring hope to this new digital frontier.

S SIONS:A S A L VADORA N T R A LEV OL G SLARUM

Every October, Life Pacific University hosts Global Vision Week, a time dedicated to highlighting the Mission works the university is undertaking in the coming school year. During this week, students and faculty come together to pray for the workers who are serving in different parts of the world and to announce the years upcoming Global Engagement trips.

These trips are incredible opportunities for students to visit places that they may have never been to before and gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in. It also provides students a chance to witness the amazing work that the mission workers are doing in their locations.

This is why, on March 15th, 2024, I found myself and a group of 14 other LPU students on our way to El Salvador. Among these students, two-thirds of us were first-timers, filled with excitement, curiosity, and a sense of adventure as we embarked on this unique journey. The remaining students

had already participated in two or more mission trips, and brought valuable experience, skills, and knowledge that would be useful to the team.

Each Global Engagement trip has a main focus, just as every country has its unique set of challenges and issues. Our trip to El Salvador was focused on ministry, street evangelism, mural painting at the church, and more. Rather than being there to “save” anyone, the students were there to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ, sharing hope with others, and showing them the love of God. It was a full itinerary, and we hit the ground running.

DAY 1: STREET EVANGELISM

The main activities for the day were muraling the kid’s ministry room and street evangelism. Local families were invited to join a small event hosted at the local basketball courts that included worship, a skit, a sermon, and a movie. We partnered with congregant’s of the church to set up the stage, clean the area, prepare snacks, and pass out flyers.

The event was a great success, and many people felt the presence of the Lord. The team had the opportunity to pray for some people and one person even accepted Jesus as their Savior. It was an incredible moment and an amazing end to a day full of new experiences, challenges, and growth.

DAY 2: A SERVICE OF LOVE

The next morning was rough, as we had to wake up early to catch the bus

for church. Once we arrived, everyone had a part to play in setting up the sound, media, and children’s ministry while the speakers prepared their words and got connected with the translator to ensure they were on the same page.

Two fellow students shared their testimonies about problems we all face and how surrendering to God helped them through the challenges, while two other students taught classes for middle school and elementary kids.

Our group leader, Natasha, had the privilege of sharing the Word and encouraged the congregation. It was a beautiful message… and one that would come alive to us sooner than we expected!

DAY 3: JOURNEY FROM TURMOIL TO TRANSFORMATION

After spending time with the community and hosting the service, we spent a day learning about the culture, economy, and government of El Salvador.

After learning some background information, the team traveled downtown and explored some historical areas, visited two cathedrals, and learned about a bishop who made a significant impact on the city during his time.

DAY 4: OUTREACH AND CONNECTION

Day 4 found the group feeling drained but excited as they embarked on a 7 hour journey to visit a village with exceptionally high poverty rates. Foursquare has been working to establish a church there where

through monthly food drives, help for kids to improve their learning, and assistance in rebuilding the community.

For many of the students, this was their first time seeing such extreme poverty. The houses were made from sand, dirt, mud, and corrugated fencing and housed 3-5 people each. The area was extremely dry, and it was hard to see people living in such difficult conditions.

It was beautiful to see the team engage the community and their loving hearts. Some of the team members played with the children, and they were struck by how simply the children found joy in running in circles or playing hide and seek.

After finishing up with the students, the group had a quick meal nearby and then did some street evangelism in the same small village. They prayed for different families that wanted prayer and gave them words of encouragement.

DAY 5: BRUSHSTROKES AND BLESSINGS

We divided the team into three groups. The first group worked on painting a mural for the kids’ room upstairs, while the second group painted downstairs. Their main focus was to retouch the walls around the building interior that needed fixing, a seemingly simple task complicated by the realities of painter’s tape. The third group helped by running errands, such as going with the missionary to get more painting equipment and buying food for the team.

At the end of the day, the group prayed and praised God as they felt His presence during the service. They had also finished painting two murals for the kids to see, and the painting was completed downstairs as well. All the glory goes to God for the successful day.

ENDINGS… AND BEGINNINGS

As the mission trip in El Salvador drew to a close, the team members were excited to return to their familiar environs, yet their hearts remained full of stories, transformative experiences, and a deeper appreciation for the challenges and joys encountered by communities far from their own.

We entered this trip mostly strangers to each other and to those in El Salvador, but now we’re a family connected by experience and God’s global love for each of His children! And now the mission is, as it has always been for the Church, to share all our experiences with the community around us, wherever they may be!

LPU ALUMNA NAOMI (HOKYO) LYFORD ’07: SERVING IN CAMBODIA

Called to missions at the age of 8, Naomi Hokyo knew she’d serve God by going to the nations. Graduating from Life Pacific in 2007, she worked abroad many years through YWAM, starting schools in Africa and then Malaysia, before working with the Burmese people in Myanmar.

When Naomi met Uriah Lyford, another YWAM missionary, the couple knew God had positioned them to partner together in life and in ministry. Now married with two daughters, Uriah and Naomi consider themselves a “family on mission” as they work to strengthen and expand their ministry in Cambodia.

Currently, Naomi and Uriah are focused on establishing a youth movement to help young Cambodians understand their identity as children of God and as Cambodians. Seeking to empower young people so that they will not just survive but thrive is at the heart of this endeavor.

Naomi’s connection to the LPU community remains strong and she is grateful for her time at LIFE as a college student. According to Naomi, LPU is “the kind of institution that will adequately train you for life, to be a light and example in your community and in the world in whatever vocation you choose.”

In the last year, Naomi and Uriah

• Enrolled over 42,000 students in their online school

• Provided a 1-month supply of food to over 2,500 families in the poorest communities most affected by COVID-19

• Led a discipleship community of over 40 full-time staff and students

• Managed a social media platform which has reached over 4 million people.

Since the original printing of this article in 2022, Naomi and Uriah’s ministry has multiplied! Check out the new school and ministry base launching in July of 2024!”

JOURNEY OF IMPACT: MINISTRY THROUGH BUSINESS AND A21

Swift steel mechanisms slide glossy paint across a screen onto a soft black cotton tee, which then warms in a specialized curing machine. The finished product? Your latest LPU Alumni t-shirt, courtesy of LPU alum Dean Holmes ’14, and his screen-printing business, Ink Titan.

The daily grind for Dean consists of managing the sales and day-to-day operations of what has become a thriving company. Neatly organized stacks of colorful apparel, from screen printed pullovers to embroidered ball caps, flank the stockroom, and specialized machinery tells tales of the many projects Ink Titan has in its queue. But probably the most unique aspect about this business is its owner’s LPU origins.

“I grew up in Southern California, attending and serving in church for most of my teen years. When it was time to select a college, LPU offered exactly what I was looking for in terms of getting a sound biblical education and a smaller classroom and campus experience.” Dean was certain about his goals as a student. “I wanted to study theology and pursue music in church at the time and got to do all of those things throughout my time at LPU.”

Resiliency and work ethic are other aspects of Dean’s success that have roots at LPU. “One thing I learned through my time at LPU is how to apply myself and commit to the journey of doing hard things.” Dean reminisces, “Studying theology was much harder than I had anticipated, but with the help of awesome professors, I was able to persevere and achieve goals that never thought possible. This ‘can do’ mentality is something I carry on through my business operations every day.”

This ethic and dedication has been a key element of Ink Titan’s success. But as brilliant as the company’s work is, business certainly isn’t Dean’s only focus. “My primary income revolves around running Ink Titan, but I have had multiple opportunities to apply

the Biblical learning that I received over the years since being at LPU. Right out of LPU, I youth pastored at a church with my wife (Cathy Holmes, who also attended LPU) for 4 years. I have also served many other capacities at church, including worship team and creative directing over the years since graduating.”

Although he’s served in traditional ministry roles, ministry and business don’t seem to be mutually exclusive to Dean. “Mixing business and ministry has been seamless for me over the years. Getting to print for various churches, ministries, and non-profits since being at LPU has been one of the things I love most about being in the decoration industry.” He excitedly continues, “Most notable would be our partnership with A21 Campaign [the anti-human trafficking organization co-founded by Christine Caine].” Dean has printed numerous merch items for A21, which are sold and distributed globally and whose proceeds fund anti-human trafficking efforts. Ink Titan also prints A21’s annual Walk For Freedom shirts. 20,000+ units of product is no mean feat, but Dean humbly credits his Maker in helping him make these strides. “God has taken care of us over the years, and never ceases to amaze with new opportunities to spread His love through printing.”

Success has its roots in wisdom, and Dean has some advice that he would give his younger self (or any student currently studying at LPU): “Simply trust the process and stay the course. It was tempting from time to time to not finish my studies since my business was making me a decent income. But I’m so proud that I persevered and finished. God brought me to LPU for a reason, and if I had left early, I wouldn’t have seen the fullness of what God had for me there.”

Dean and Cathy have two children and are serving at Vida Church in North Hills, CA
