Park Life takes a look at Lyme Disease in Dogs... the number of cases is increasing each year. Lyme disease in dogs is caused by a bacterium known as Borrelia Burgdorferi and it was first found in 1984. The bacteria are passed on by ticks and the main tick is known as the Ixodes which can affect dogs just like it can affect humans. Each year the number of cases increase and the fact that the climate is changing and people are moving countries is resulting in ticks spreading meaning the disease is being carried further. Lyme disease can develop quickly once a dog becomes infected and it can also be passed on just as quickly.

What are the symptoms? Symptoms only develop in a small number of dogs and unlike Lyme disease in humans the disease is not simple to spot in dogs as it can take a long period of time to develop. However, the main symptoms are fever, anorexia, loss of appetite, lameness, joint pain, swelling, damaged kidneys.

10 |

Treating the disease Antibiotic therapy can be used to treat the disease and this begins with a one month course. The most common antibiotic used is doxycycline and this has an added bonus of also treating any other infections that may be present in the dog at the same time. It helps to reduce inflammation, is cheap and the duration of a month is recommended because it is likely the dog would have had the disease for some time before it is recognised. However, studies suggest that using antibiotics over a long term is no more beneficial than using them over a shorter term and it is still possible for the bacteria to remain in the tissue of the body after the course has ended. The result of this treatment differs from dog to dog and the disease can still be present a year after treatment. If there is damage to the kidneys then additional treatment may be required such as additional medication to help the kidney function along with a new diet.

How to prevent the disease There are vaccines available to help prevent the disease but how well they work is not particularly clear. In many cases, experts are not fully supportive of offering the vaccine but using the help and guidance of your vet should help you to make a decision. How common the disease is in your area could determine whether it is suitable for your dog to be given the vaccine. However, the vaccine sometimes offers a form of treatment that can be given with the antibiotics, but there is no real clear evidence that it makes any difference to the recovery time. Control and detection of the disease in its early stages is the best way forward and this is why dog owners should be aware of ticks.

We have moved! Struthers & Scott based in Doune, has been providing veterinary care for out clients in the region since 1965. Now concentrating solely on small animals, the Practice will be moving to new purpose-built premises in Doune, later in the summer. We will continue to provide high quality care, as well as specialised pain clinics, animal behaviour advice, puppy parties and dog training classes. The new building will have separate dog and cat waiting areas, and dedicated dental, x-ray and ultrasound rooms. Updates will be posted on our website, Facebook and in client newsletters. Our new address will be Struthers & Scott Veterinary Practice, Unit 2, Innes Park, Station Wynd, Doune FK16 6EH

I started Park Life Magazine in 2005 because I saw the need for a magazine covering this area. Park Life Magazine provides a single point for local information, events and news. For advertisers it is a cost effective way to promote themselves in the area. 12 years on, 62 Editions and there is still the need. Over time other magazines and websites have come and gone, our focus though has been clear throughout and that is to mix good local content with adverts. The adverts themselves are also a much-

needed source of local information and we are the ‘go to’ directory for many people who want to find a particular business or service. Over the years we have never missed an edition and we are grateful for all of the advertisers that support the publication. Event listings, editorials, profiles, features, recipes etc. have always been a big part of what we do and we get so much great feedback about them. That has inspired us to do even more! Lisa - Sales Director | e: m: 07792 066706 t: 01360 550857 Parklife Magazine, Killearn Mill, Killearn, Glasgow G63 9LQ

Meet the Park Life Team! Katrina Gardner (Director) After a career in hotels involving all aspect of business from sales to marketing I thought running my own business would be easy! Lots of highs and a few lows on the way but overall, a love of this part of the world and a desire to get involved locally it has been a joy. With over £50,000 raised under the Park Life name for local charities and numerous networking events and dinners. Getting to know local businesses and connecting them it has been a lot of fun and with this excellent team it’s most certainly onwards and upwards for Park Life Magazine!

Lisa Sanderson (Sales Director) Lisa started with Park Life over 6 years ago after having had a break from work to raise her two children (raising kids has to be harder than any job I can think of!) With a degree in Business Management which led to a career as Hotel Manager for Whitbread we have no idea why she loves working with us so much! Lisa’s love of the Park Life area shines through when she visits our customers and tries to help them promote their businesses using the skills and knowledge she has in sales and marketing. It’s all helped with her happy bubbly personality. She can be spotted out and about delivering Park Life at the drop off points monthly, when in search for a coffee and a chat!

Heather Munro (Bookkeeper & Multi tasker) 13 years keeping the books in order at Park Life and steering the company in the right direction, she deserves a medal for perseverance. A gentle guiding hand to make sure the bills and wages are paid on time but also willing to jump on board in other areas to help when needed. Maybe 30 years as a guide leader, including 5 years as Local District Commissioner and even now still the District Treasurer tells you all you need to know about Heathers patience and willingness to help others. At Park Life office this is another reason the team works well.

Simon Jones (Creative Director) Simon has been a very welcome addition to the team and has over 30 years in the Graphic Design and Advertising industry and now has own company, Skep Design. We have thrown a lot of curve balls his way and he is never fazed... well not yet! Simon has worked with the team for the last 5 years producing all the design and creative work for Park Life Magazine and numerous local businesses including designing the Drymen Gala Day Programme for the last 3 years.

Paul Saunders (Social Media & Marketing) Paul is a marketing consultant in Drymen and works with a number of local businesses. He looks after the running of our Facebook account; he also writes articles and provides photography for the magazine. His Creative input has greatly enhanced our social media presence with videos, photos etc highlighting up and coming events and reviewing successful local gatherings along with local news updates. As you probably all know he is also renowned for his amazing photography skills.

Park Life The Clachan Inn RESTAURANT goes from strength to strength REVIEW under the ownership of the Strangs.

By Paul Saunders

Park Life asked me to visit The Clachan in Drymen, along with my family to review the restaurant for the magazine. Living in Drymen I know The Clachan well, however it was a chance to see how it has changed since the Strang family took it over. We were there on a Saturday night and there was a good buzz in the village that extended into The Clachan. Despite being busy, with all the tables taken there was a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. It was good to see all of the favourites still on the menu, along with some new additions and a varied and tempting specials board. For drinks we enjoyed some Scottish favourites, Schiehallion Lager for me, with my wife Sarah choosing Rock Rose Gin from the excellent Scottish Craft Gin menu and for my daughter Katie an Irn Bru! When your child is happy with their food that

! N I W with

Life Park zine a Mag

makes the whole experience even better! Katie loved her Lasagna Al Forno, Sarah chose a homemade ham and wild mushroom stone baked pizza and I had Venison Casserole from the specials. We all enjoyed our main courses they were hot, tasty and good size portions. Whilst Sarah and I were too full for deserts Katie made a good go of the Ice Cream Sundae, which she loved. The new owners have kept all the good qualities of The Clachan, whilst providing some welcome new additions. Throughout the evening the service was excellent, led by Nicole. This wasn’t our first visit to The Clachan and it definitely won’t be our last!

RECIPE Yasmin’s Family Dhal

Recipe taken from Yasmin’s authentic vegetarain Pujabi curry kit. Dhal is the ultimate comfort food and there is almost always a pot of it on the go in my kitchen. Rich in protein and packed with flavour it’s savoury, aromatic and warming. Make it once and you’ll find yourself cooking it again and again.

15m prep | 45m cooking Makes 2 generous servings Ingredients • 125g red lentils • 625ml water

Bring the lentils to the boil and set to a steady simmer for 30 minutes, stirring every few minutes. By now the lentils should have thoroughly broken down to give you a sauce with a creamy consistency. At this stage fry the onions on a high heat to a deep golden brown. Pour the onions and the oil over the lentils – being careful as the oil will sizzle and may spit – and stir through.

About Scotia Spice Yasmin grew up in a house full of the warm comforting aromas of Punjabi cooking. Through Scotia Spice and with know how passed down the generations Yasmin shows enthusiastic cooks how to get the most out of exotic spices and delicious ingredients. One taste of a curry cooked from scratch and you’ll never want a takeaway again. For details of our award winning kits and our cookery school please visit our website at

Serve with basmati rice and raita.

• 1 large onion, halved and sliced • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger • ¾ tsp garam masala • ½ tsp ground coriander • ½ tsp ground cumin • ⅓ tsp chilli powder or to taste • ¼ tsp turmeric • Salt to taste • 3 tbsp vegetable oil Add the water, lentils, garlic, ginger and all of the spices to a medium saucepan. Place a third of the onion slices, preferably of a similar size, into a non-stick frying pan with the oil and set aside. Add the remaining two thirds of the onion to the lentils.

Alice McFarlane speaks to Park Life about her fundraising efforts in Tanzania Helping to raise ÂŁ1,500 for Magima villagers to help themselves, by funding the start up of some small businesses in their rural Tanzanian village.

Alice is planning to help set up several small businesses in the village of Magima in a remote area of Southern Tanzania. A large workshop has already been built using funds raised in Scotland. The group would like to start producing roof tiles for which there is a good demand. This project will require the largest portion of the money raised. Some ladies plan to make soap for sale and another group would like to start producing chalk for school use. Her friend Oswin who works for COCO charity is going to oversee the projects and will provide advice and business training to the various groups. He will also provide regular reports as to how the money is being

spent and what progress is being made. Oswin is also an expert in permaculture and plans to pass on his knowledge of this very efficient and sustainable method of farming to the people at the Magima workshop. Alice has now been visiting the people of Magima village since 2000 and believes that they will make a success of the various ventures planned. With plans to go there next Spring to meet up with old friends and see for herself what has been achieved. When they start to get a return for their efforts, it will give the people a chance to access better education, better food and have some of the things most of us take for granted. Park Life Meets...

Stuart MacFarlane Mugdock Ranger A ranger is the middle person between the public and experts of all the specialist items in a park. The ranger therefore knows a lot of things about the whole range of wildlife and nature that can be found a park such as Mugdock Country Park. Paul Saunders from Park Life Magazine recently met Stuart MacFarlane one of the three rangers at Mugdock to find out about his working day. Stuart has been on the Ranger Team at Mugdock Country Park since 2003, having started even before that as a seasonal ranger. He has also been a ranger in Kilmarnock and Arran. Before becoming a ranger he was an apprentice gardener, but wanted to know more about the different birds and plants that he saw on his walks along the canal in his hometown of Kirkintilloch. To put that right he went to college and studied Ranger Conservation Management. Home for Stuart is Milngavie, with his wife and three young children. He has to entertain a lot more children than just his own though. Mugdock Park is a popular location for trips from schools and community groups. This is the part of the job he enjoys the most and he makes a special effort to include everyone, even the quieter ones at the back of the group. Seeing engagement and interest from the kids is what drives Stuart. Still with mini beast hunting and pond dipping there is plenty to entertain the hundreds of children that visit Mugdock on organised trips. Mugdock contains some ancient woodland and Stuart loves the quieter, sometimes more undiscovered parts of the park. His favourite month is September when the weather gets fresher and there is a feeling of change in the countryside. That image of quiet reflection in amongst the beautiful scenery contrasts greatly with Stuart’s other passion – progressive rock. So whilst you may find Stuart at work in Mugdock during the day, it’s the pubs and clubs where you will find him gigging at the weekend playing guitar in his band.

Park Life’s Fit For Life By Liz Ewing Personal Trainer & Sports Therapist There are no secrets to losing weight and getting fitter. If you want to lose weight, become healthier and fitter, these are my top 6 tips to get you started. 1. Exercise at least 3 times weekly. Strength training should be the core of your exercise programme. It’s true what they say, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, so start lifting! My goal is always to get clients stronger. You burn more calories, you feel better, you look better, you improve confidence and more. 2. MOVE... keep active. Invest in a pedometer and aim for at least 10,000 steps a day. 3. Eat Clean...don’t diet. The one thing everyone struggles To lose weight it is approximately 70% clean eating and 30% exercise. Include plenty of fruit and vegetables. Also include plenty of protein. Protein keeps you feeling fuller for longer and is a key player in fat loss. Keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, this will allow you

4. Drink plenty of water. Aim for a least 1 ½ - 2 litres a day. Even more the days you are exercising. 5. Get enough sleep. Your body needs sleep and rest to recover. 8 hours of sleep per night should be your goal. Getting plenty of sleep is imperative for fat loss. 6. Try incorporating one or two good habits into your lifestyle to start with, then add more gradually. Small daily improvements are the key to long-term results. Be disciplined and be consistent and you will get results!

Originally the Club started in 1977 as a play-reading group, but the urge to perform led the small group to produce their first play on a specially erected stage in the Menzies Hall, Fintry. In time, changes to the Menzies Hall, (often financed by FADS) allowed more sophisticated productions. Today it has the facilities of a small theatre. Members are from Fintry and many of the surrounding villages. The Club has evolved and blossomed with new members bringing their particular strengths and experience resulting in the talented bunch the group is today. Our audiences have grown to expect a high standard of performance and attention to detail from set design, costumes, make-up and actors all contributing to enhance our productions. Pantomime has been performed in December every year since their first “Dick Whittington” in 1979. These are always a great favourite with audiences. The Club has had many successes with Serious Drama “An Inspector Calls”, “The Winslow Boy” and “Lend Me A Tenor” to name a few. Musicals, too: “Return To The Forbidden Planet”, “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Life” and “Cabaret”. “The Full Monty” and “Dance Derby” were 2 of our more challenging successes. Prize-winning One Act plays: “Oh, What A Lovely War”, “ Pushcart Pedlars” and many more. We were particularly proud when “Victor’s Dung” was named winner of the British Finals of Community Drama 2015. Our Juniors also won the Scottish Finals with “Jabberwok” in 2012 and “Tuesdays and Sundays” in 2016. As we celebrate this 40th Anniversary we must mention that we are always happy to welcome new faces, both on the stage and behind the scenes. Many thanks to all the folk in the Stirling area who regularly make up our audiences. To find out more and to contact us, please visit: | 45 or find us on Facebook FADS.

When someone in the family has a hearing loss the whole family has a hearing problem.

– Dr Mark Ross PHD If that someone is you... • It might just be that other family members get a bit irritated with you at having to repeat themselves.

• It could be that they miss sharing things with you, like a joke or a favourite TV programme.

• Or it could be that they’re worried about how withdrawn from them you have become

At Clements Hearing Services we have helped thousands of people with hearing loss and their families. We’ve been helping them since since 1996, and we can help you too using the most up to date hearing aid technology. The most important thing to us is to give you good service. Eight Wee Hills with Big Views You don’t have to be an experienced hill walker to enjoy Scotland’s most spectacular views. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park boasts a range of ‘Wee Hills with Big Views’ that can be enjoyed by people of all levels of fitness and experience.

Ben A’an

In the Trossachs, the 4km walk up this lovely peak offers a surprisingly big experience with many of the ingredients of a mountain hike such as an atmospheric forest, open moorlands, views of crags and a superb vista of the surrounding landscape at the top.

Gouk Hill

On the east of Helensburgh, Gouk hill is 277m high and forms part of the long distance coast-to-coast walk, the John Muir Way.landscape at the top.

Take a walk on the wild side...

Glen Striddle hills

58 |

These hills offer a fine hike from the village of Luss and to the highest point, Beinn Dubh at 657m. You could choose to simply walk out and back on the same route, or complete a 12km horseshoe circuit taking in another hilltop, Mid Hill at 623m.

Ben Gullipen

Starting from Callander, this is a 414m hike up a wellestablished path. The reward is breath-taking views of the Wallace Monument near Stirling, Loch Venachar, Ben Venue and Ben Ledi, as well as the Munros Stuc a’Chroin and Ben Vorlich, and the Menteith Hills.

Callander Crags

If you’re looking for something a little less challenging, these crags offer a very pleasant walk through beautiful woodlands, over the crag tops and to a cairn at 343m. Many people also take in a visit to the stunning Bracklinn Falls.

In the north of the National Park, Dundurn is a rocky knoll only 112m high where a Pictish Fort once sat. Filled with local history, en-route to the top you can visit a burial ground and the remains of St. Fillan’s Chapel, dating back to the 1300s.

Conic Hill

A short but fairly stiff 361m climb beginning in Balmaha, Conic Hill offers magnificent views of Loch Lomond. It comes with the added bragging bonus of being able to say you’ve walked part of the West Highland Way, one of Scotland’s most famous trails.

Inchcailloch island

If you fancy a boat trip, cross over from Balmaha to the enchanting Inchcailloch island, and then follow the easy-going way-marked trail up to the island’s highest point (85m). Enjoy a panoramic view of the peaks of many mountains.

Park Life Interview

with Gordon Buchanan wildlife cameraman & presenter Join Gordon Buchanan, the highly acclaimed wildlife cameraman and presenter of “The Bear Family and Me’. ’The Polar Bear Family and Me’ and The Snow Wolf Family and Me’ as he hosts an evening of exciting personal recollections, and lets you into his world of weird, wild and wonderful wildlife. With twenty years experience of travelling across the globe, Gordon has a reputation for relishing dangerous and tough assignments. Listen to his adventures as he leads you through his life of challenging expeditions and enthralling wildlife experiences. Marvel as he shares his tales alongside his own film footage and brilliant images of all that he has come to face, and answers your burning wildlife questions.

What do you think influenced your choice of career? Definitely growing up on the Isle of Mull was a big influence – for two quite opposite reasons. Mull offered freedom and a sense of wilderness, but being an island it was claustrophobic and limited in what it had to offer to someone with an adventurous spirit.

How did you get discovered for TV? I’d started to make a film about Leopards in Sri Lanka. They are notoriously elusive cats and sightings were so few and far between that the film was going to fall flat on its face as a straight natural history documentary. My boss at the time, the producer Mike Birkhead realised that the film would have to be not a film about Leopards but a film about trying to make a film about Leopards. There was only me in the field so I filmed myself without the pressure of a 72 |

whole crew looking and listening. Everything since stemmed from that.

The late Nick Gordon gave you your first break, did you aspire to him when you were an early cameraman/ presenter? And why? Nick was the first person I had ever met who had a truly enviable job, was ambitious and simply loved doing what he did and strived to be the best at it.

Were you always passionate about wildlife even as a child? As a kid I was wildly passionate about spending time outdoors, it was the only thing that mattered to me. Thinking back I was always very bored indoors. There was nothing inside that compared to the adventures and excitement to be had out in the rain, wind, snow and occasional sunshine. Wildlife was part of that experience and I loved it but I wasn’t a junior naturalist. I didn’t have a binoculars, camera and almanac, just a pair of wellies.

What has been your closest encounter with a wild animal? I’ve been chased by Bears, Elephants, Tigers and many others, but one of the first and most memorable encounters was in Sierra Leone when I was 17 driving back to camp when 7 giant fruit bats escaped from a holding container in the back of the car. They are huge and they flapped and nipped me all the way back to camp. Memorable only really because at the time I was slightly terrified of bats!

When you’re not filming or working, how do you relax? I’m not a great relaxer but in my free time I like to be outside without the pressure of having a camera. I have a little wooden boat that I love to be out in, rain or shine. Recently I have been heading over to the west coast to freedive. I am loving that. Watching fish, looking at sea urchins, starfish, soft corals, kelp forests is very relaxing. But equally I love just being at home on the sofa with Wendy, Lola and Harris, chilling at the weekend with some good tv and glass or two of wine.

Advice to your 16-year-old self? Don’t worry you’ll get there in the end so embrace, enjoy and make the very most of the opportunities that come you way. Life is serious business so have as much fun as possible. 30th SEPT GLASGOW, Mitchell Library Booking Info: T: 0141 353 8000 event/1/animal-families-and-mewithgordonbuchanan 1st OCT STIRLING, Macrobert Theatre Booking Info: T: 01786 466666 event/gordon-buchanan-animalfamilies-and-me/

Fun & fashion day all in the name of a good cause! Autumn Date with Fashion.

On Sunday, October 8th Frox of Falkirk will once again be delighting the ladies at the annual luncheon at Culcreuch Castle, Fintry in aid of Cancer Research UK. Now in its fourth year this event, organised by Strathendrick Local Committee, is a firm favourite with many ladies and has raised £9056 towards the wonderful work of CRUK. With its House to House Collection each spring supported by a number of volunteer collectors and together with other occasional fund raising efforts the

committee, formed in 1993, has donated in excess of £278000 to CRUK. The tremendous total is, of course, due to Strathendrick area’s residents who support the cause and the committee’s efforts so enthusiastically. In 2014 Frox showed off some stunning outfits from their mother of the bride collection. On this forthcoming occasion the garments on parade will be selected from Frox Occasion Wear range....a little less formal but no less stunning! Over the years Culcreuch Castle has

been the preferred venue for this event which has become a ‘must do’ date in many diaries. A Strathendrick committee member said “The Castle’s staff always provide a lovely luncheon amidst great surroundings with a super atmosphere and easy parking. Their professionalism and generous support make it the perfect place for us to stage this event.”

Tickets for the event on October 8th are available at £25 each from Janet on 449214; Helen on 860280 and Lesley on 440520.
